THIS is a progress report of an experiment being undertaken in cooperation with the Bethlehem Steel Corp., the Crucible Steel Co., and the Rock Bit Sales and Service Co., involving heat treatment of the shank ends of drill steel. This experiment is being conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in its experimental mine, Mining Research Branch, Bluemont, Va. The purpose of the experiment is to determine the effect of an increase in the time the steel soaks in the furnace during the hardening heat. It has been thought that increasing this time produces a soft zone below the lugs resulting in a metallurgical notch that causes early failure. Each of the steel companies furnished enough 11/4 - in. straight carbon, hollow, round steel to make up 10 sets of drill steel, in each instance the steel bars were from the same heat. These sets of drill steel, consisting of 2-ft, 4-ft, 6-ft, and 8-ft lengths were fabricated by the Rock Bit Sales and Service Co. Special attention was given to the forging of the steel to produce the best rods possible. The heat treatment of all thread ends was identical and followed the best practice. The heat treatment of the shank ends of five sets of steel from each company produced a soft zone 2 to 4 in. in front of the lugs. It was decided that possibly the best way to obtain this effect was not to overlap the hardening heat but to let the steel soak for an additional 30 min before quenching. Therefore the only variable in the test steels is the length of time the shank ends were in the furnace. The remaining drill steel shanks were treated as follows: Heat treatment in pyrometer-controlled furnace at 1550°F. Quenching oil at 105°F to 125°F temperature. Areas for heat treatment were; shanks, 11 in.; threads, 9 in. Time at heat, standard practice, 20 min for 11/4-in. steel. Actual drilling tests were made in greenstone, (a metamorphosed basaltic rock), and in epidosite. Greenstone has a specific gravity of 2.96 and a compressive strength of 44,200 psi. Epidosite has a specific gravity of 3.26 and a compressive strength of 63,100 psi. All drilling tests were made using a 31/2-in. column-mounted, automatic feed drifter, with a controlled air pressure of 90 psi at the throttle. Tungsten-carbide bits of 2 in. diameter were used for all drilling. Contrary to expectations the drill steels that were allowed to soak for the additional 30 min before quenching performed better than the steels that were heat treated according to standard practice. This performance, as shown in Table I, was especially noticeable in the drilling of epidosite. The "longheat" drill steels furnished by Company "A" drilled 154 pct more minutes than the "standard-heat" steel. Expressed in feet, the "long-heat" steel drilled 114.60 ft more before failure than the "standard-heat" steel. The "long-heat" steel furnished by Company "B" drilled 37 pet more minutes or 60.39 ft more before failure than the "standard-heat" drill steel. The effect of the long heat treatment was not as evident when the steels were drilling in greenstone (Table II). In greenstone, the increase in minutes drilled by the "long-heat" steel over the "standard-heat" steel was 47 pet and 1 pet, respectively, for Companies "A" and "B."

Remarks of Mr. Robert W. Hunt, General, Superintendent, Albany and Rensselaer Iron and Steel Company., Troy N. Y.—In discussing Dr. Dudley's two most interesting papers, I feel a natural hesitancy in disagreeing with conclusions formed after such careful and conscientious work. But I think he has made his deductions from too meagre premises. The analyses of but twenty-five samples are entirely too few to justify the establishment of so important a formula. When we consider that he indirectly proposes to regulate an interest amounting, even at the present low prices, to over $20,000,000 per annum, we may well hesitate before accepting a formula based upon the chemical and physical analyses of but twenty-five steel rails. Dr. Dudley touches the keynote in referring to the proposed labors of the Government Test Commission. They based their hopes of attaining success upon the chemical and physical analyses of a very large number of samples, and in the only branch of investigation which the short-sighted policy of Congress has allowed them to complete, i.e., chain cables, we find that a dozen, twenty-five or one hundred tests gave no satisfactory results. It was only after many hundreds that they were enabled to' draw conclusions. There are so many circumstances hearing upon the life of a rail, that the task of extracting a correct result seems herculean. I presume I am right in stating that in our Northern latitudes early winter and spring months witness the breaking of the greatest number of rails, thus seeming to prove that an unstable road-bed has much to answer for. Then, again, broken and flattened wheels must be taken into account, but I am convinced that more rails have been broken by the treatment which they received before leaving the rolling-mill

Monazite has had a Cinderella-like history. Although nearly go per cent pure rare-earth compound (rare-earth phosphate) it was sought at first not for the rare earths but for the sake of a minor constituent—thorium. The thorium, essential for the Welsbach gaslight mantle, was present in only small quantities and the principal constituents, the rare earths, were largely discarded. Gradually, however, the rare earths have developed uses of their own and today have left the thorium far behind in value. Occurrence Monazite was first produced commercially about 1886, in North Carolina, where it was collected in small sluices by farmers who found it in stream beds on their land. The deposits were later exploited on a larger scale, but were mostly abandoned in a few years, when monazite from Brazil came upon the market in far larger quantities. Domestic production ceased entirely in 1906. The Brazilian source is still active, together with Indian, Dutch East Indies, and Australian deposits. Several other localities in the United States have yielded monazite, but none of these has produced commercially as yet. Monazite occurs originally in pegmatite~ and gneisses, through which, unfortunately, it is scattered in highly dispersed form. All commercially useful deposits consist of transported monazite sands liberated by erosion and concentrated by the action of water, which has sluiced away lighter materials and concentrated the heavy (D = 5.0 to 5.2) grains of monazite, together with ilmenite, zircon, garnet, and other dense minerals. The Carolina deposits were in stream beds; most of the other deposits mentioned are on or near the seashore, where the action of the waves has served to concentrate the monazite. In most cases today, the sands are worked to obtain the ilmenite and zircon, as well as monazite. The minerals are separated by means of sluices, dry tables, and magnetic separators, and each is finally obtained nearly pure. No crushing or grinding is necessary. The concentrates are shipped in fiber bags. The two questions considered in this study are: (1) what similarity is there in the liberation of magnetite from various iron formations, and (2) how is this liberation affected by the size reduction technique employed. Twelve sample suites were obtained from commercial concentrators processing magnetite iron formation in the United States, Canada, and Australia. These samples have grades in the range 15 to 45% magnetite iron and approximate mineral grain sizes o f 50 to 2000 microns. Efforts were directed at measuring the liberation characteristics of the samples obtained from the concentrators primary grinding mills. The Davis tube, a laboratory magnetic separator, was used to concentrate individual size fractions of the size reduction product to determine liberation data. These liberation data were compared with relationships calculated from a highly idealized mathematical model of liberation in a binary mineral system. The results of these comparisons have been encouraging for nine or ten of the twelve samples tested. This leads to the conclusion that for most commercial iron formations, at least with conventional rod mill size reduction, it is possible to quantitatively characterize liberation with two parameters: an effective mineral grain size and ore grade. Limited laboratory size reduction tests as well as one of two sets of liberation data from commercial primary autogenous grinding lend some support to the contention that autogenous grinding can affect mineral liberation.

It is with more than ordinary pleasure that I have complied with the request of the President of the Verein Deutscher Eisenh?tten leute, to read before this meeting and in this country a paper on a system of transport by wire ropeways which, during the past twenty years, has advanced with rapid strides in Europe, and more partic ularly in Germany. America, with its immense network of railways and water communications, should offer peculiarly favorable oppor tunities for the introduction of these ropeways as feeders, more par ticularly in the mining districts, where, as in Europe, a hilly or mountainous region frequently opposes serious obstacles to the em ployment of surface railroads. The importance of the aerial ropeway as a factor in the develop ment of mineral resources deserves the consideration of every mining engineer. As a case in point, the rich iron-ore of the sierra de Bedar in southern Spain, would probably remain untouched to this day but for an aerial ropeway, 15.6 km. (9 3/4 miles) long, which con nects the mines with the shore of the Mediterranean near the town of Garrucha, affording cheap carriage to the nearest shipping point. A railway would have cost about $480,000 (£100,000), but such a heavy outlay would have more than absorbed all prospective profits on the sale of ore. As the aërial ropeway could be built for a little more than one-fourth of that amount, or $124,800 (£26,000), its erection furnished the successful solution of a profitable mining enterprise. This line has been in satisfactory operation for over two yearn; its details will be referred to later. But beside their importance as feeders, ropeways are valuable as a means of conveyance between works and distant warehouses, and between separate buildings in the same works. Their rapidly spreading introduction for such purposes indicates how keenly the necessity of effecting economies is felt under the stress of an everaccentuating competitiop.

UNUSUAL interest has recently centered in the Mojave mining district of California, owing to new discoveries of gold ore at the Silver Queen mine, and subsequently at other neighboring proper- ties. These finds have proved that opportunities exist for the prospector even in old mining districts, where careful search may still be rewarded. The Mojave district is characterized by a group of small hills centering around Soledad Butte, four to six miles southwest of Mojave, in Kern County. This butte is 1250 ft. higher than the surrounding desert and 4000 ft. above sea level. Four miles west of Soledad Mountain are the so-called Middle Buttes, a group of flat-topped hills. Wrought unalloyed iodide chromium, containing 39 to 95 ppm total interstitials, has a tensile transition temperature of —15°C. Re crystallizing at 1100°C causes the transition to rise to 90° to 390°C, depending on the purity, grain size, and cooling rate after annealing. At about the 100 ppm level, individual additions of carbon or nitrogen raise the transition of both wrought and recrystallized chromium by as much as 210°C, while oxygen has a lesser effect, and sulfur essentially no effect. High transitzon temperatures are exhibited by recrystallized and quenched chromium, and appear to be associated with the amount and distribution of inter-stitials. The latter cm be either in solid solution or in the form of precipitates within the grains or at the grain boundaries. Quench hardening in chromium is primarily caused by nitrogen. The hardness, re crystallization, and grain growth behavior of chromium with and without impurity additions were also investigated. BECAUSE of low density and good oxidation resistance, chromium-base alloys are potentially useful for elevated-temperature applications. The main deterrent to the use of chromium in structural applications is its lack of low-temperature ductility, especially in the recrystallized condition. Accumulated evidence has shown that the ductility of chromium is sensitive to purity. The objective of the current study was to determine the effect of common nonmetallic impurities on the tensile properties of high purity chromium. The separate effects of carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur additions on the ductile-to-brittle transition were evaluated for wrought and recrystallized material after various cooling rates. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Unalloyed iodide chromium and seven impurity alloys containing individual carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, or sulfur additions were prepared in rod form. Nominal additions were 100 ppm C, N, and S, and 100 to 500 ppm O. The additions were about a factor of ten greater than the residual amounts in the unalloyed material. The seven alloys and two unalloyed compositions were consolidated into four-pound ingots by conventional consumable arc melting of pressed and welded electrodes under 0.5 atm of helium. Impurity additions were made to the electrode in the form of crushed master alloys. The impurity alloys were double melted to improve homogeneity. The ingots were broken down by extrusion at 1200°C in evacuated steel cans at a reduction ratio of 18 :1, using a molten borosilicate glass lubricant and a ram speed of 80 in. per min. The cans were removed by acid pickling, and the chromium core ground free of surface undulations. Cut lengths were sheathed in mild steel and swaged at 900°C until the core was about 1/4 in. in diam. Two additional 15-lb ingots of unalloyed chromium (ICr-3, ICr-4) were prepared by arc melting and broken down by 26:1 extrusion at 1250°C without a steel can. The billet was lubricated and protected from contamination by a coating of molten glass. The resulting extrusion was then sheath swaged as described previously. The Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company is situated in the Klerksdorp district of the Province of the Transvaal in the Republic of South Africa, approximately 100 miles west of Johannesburg. Gold production commenced in January 1957 and Uranium treatment of residue slimes as a by-product started in July 1957. The mining property is 5435 mining claims in extent, the equivalent of 7988 acres or 12.5 sq miles. The mine was initially exploited by the Pioneer Twin Shaft System, consisting of a 26-ft diam down-cast shaft and a 22 ft-diam up-cast shaft, sunk in the north-west area of the mine to cater for the hoisting and ventilation requirements for a milling rate of 150,000 tons per month. To exploit the Eastern zone of the property and assist in increasing production to 200,000 tons milled per month, it was decided to sink a further Twin Shaft System consisting of a 28-ft diam downcast shaft and a ventilation up-cast shaft -22-ft in diam, both monolithic concrete lined — 200 ft apart and 5300 ft deep. This paper deals with the sinking and commissioning of these Eastern Twin Shafts. This was achieved by one sinking crew within a period of 20 months. A) PLANNING 1) Siting: The Eastern Shaft System was sited in the north-east area of the property, 12,000 ft east on strike from the Pioneer System. (Fig. 1). Initially the system was sunk to the 5300 ft elevation to conform with the original Pioneer Shaft System. On completion a sub-vertical main shaft will be sunk to the 8000 ft elevation in the immediate vicinity, and subsequently the surface ventilation shaft will be deepened to this elevation by raising from level to level and sliping to full size. The exact positions of the shafts were chosen after: a) underground development had located certain known water bearing zones, and b) geophysical and topographical surveys had been carried out. The shafts passed through the following geological succession: Surface to 4430 ft - Dolomites of the Transvaal System 4430 to 4470 ft - Quartzites and conglomerates of the Black Reef Series of the Transvaal System. 4470 to 4470 ft - Diabasic Lava of the Venters-dorp System (Ventersdorp Contact Reef at base). 4470 to 5250 ft - Quartzites of the Elsburg Series of the Upper Witwaters-rand System. The shafts were sited to ensure that the least possible water would be encountered during sinking, and this contributed to the rapid rate of sinking. 2) Duties: a) The 22-ft diam ventilation shaft was designed to up-cast 1,400,000 cfm of air (0.060 density) against a resistance of 22 in. water gauge. b) The main shaft was designed to handle 160,000 tons hoisted per month as well as the men, material and down-cast ventilation to serve this tonnage. The 284 diam main shaft is equipped with streamlined buntons spaced at 15 ft centers set in pockets which were left during sinking. There are six compartments, four of which are sewed by two dual purpose hoists, hoisting either, twedeck man cages or 13-ton bottom discharge skips. The other two compartments are served by a single purpose winder hoisting double deck cages accommodating 60 men per deck. (Fig. 2). 3) Timing: Permanent equipment was ordered well in advance to insure continuity in the operation. Development underground reached the shaft positions before the start of sinking operations. From this development, boreholes were drilled into shaft positions to drain off water in the vicinity of the shafts. To ensure complete co-ordination of effort, all relevant data, as well as the allocation of responsibility, were made known to all persons and departments concerned. 4) Models: The extensive use of scale models during the preliminary planning stages proved most useful in deciding on design such as buntons, bunton pockets and guide cleats, and complex layouts concerning loading, spillage and pumping arrangements. These products would consist of 6.1 pct by weight tar acids, 50.8 pct aroma tics, 16.4 pct LPG, and 26.7 pct gasoline. THE coal hydrogenation process is well known as a means for the production of liquid fuels from coal. In this paper the possibilities of the coal hydrogenation process as a source of chemical raw materials will be discussed. The recovery of chemicals from coal hydrogenation products necessitates some modifications and additions to the equipment used for the production of fuels. The conversion of coal into liquid fuels such as gasoline requires two steps: liquid phase and vapor phase hydrogenation. Intermediate oils obtained in the liquid phase contain oxygen and nitrogen compounds, especially aromatic compounds, since the coal itself is composed mainly of cyclic compounds. These oils are the raw material for the separation of high molecular weight aro-matics and of tar acids and tar bases. The relative amounts of heavy and middle oil—boiling above and below, e.g., 325°C—can be influenced by temperature, residence time, and catalyst of the liquid phase hydrogenation. In the vapor phase hydrogenation a solid bed catalyst is used to convert the intermediate oil from the liquid phase operation into hydrocarbons of the gasoline boiling range. Essentially pure hydrocarbons with a low content of sulphur, oxygen, nitrogen, and olefines are obtained. Depending mainly on the catalyst, the high ring compound content of the liquid phase oil can be preserved and gasoline rich in aromatics obtained. However, with other catalysts, these ring compounds can be split into gasoline with a high content of isoparaffins.' Again, depending on the operating conditions, products of varying boiling range can be obtained. Selection of catalyst and operating conditions therefore makes possible the production of different grades of motor fuel and also variations in the relative amounts of benzene, toluene, and xylene when aromatic hydrocarbons are produced. The schematic flowsheet, Fig. 1, shows the main steps of the coal hydrogenation process, and the product streams used for the recovery of chemicals are indicated. In the liquid phase hydrogenation stage, coal is made into a paste with recycle heavy oil. The coal paste is mixed with hydrogen and preheated at a pressure of 300 to 700 atm in heat exchangers and preheaters. The coal paste and hydrogen enter high pressure converters where the liquefaction of coal, conversion of the high boiling liquid materials initially obtained, into intermediate oils is performed at a temperature around 470°C. The reaction products enter the hot catchpot in which lower boiling oil vapors are separated from the residue containing unreacted coal, ash, and heavy oil. This residue, usually called H.O.L.D. (heavy oil let down), is processed to separate solid and liquid material. By thermal treatment of the residue, e.g., a coking process, distillate oil is obtained, which can be recycled as part of the pasting oil. This stream is rich in polynuclear aromatics and can be, and has been, used for the recovery of such material. By elimination of other possible nucleation processes, it has been demonstrated, for commercially pure magnesium and a Mg-Al alloy, that at stresses less than that necessary for triple-point cracking creep cavities are most probably nucleated heterogeneously at second-phase particles. Evidence for the existence of such particles is presented and the role of grain boundary sliding in the nucleation process is examined quantitatively. DURING creep deformation of polycrystalline magnesium and its dilute alloys in the temperature range 0.45 to 0.7 Tm (Tm = absolute melting temperature) cavities form mainly along grain boundaries oriented normal to the stress axis and failure eventually occurs by their growth and impingement.' The possibility of low-ductility creep failure of magnesium-alloy reactor cans during service has prompted a number of studies of cavity formation in these materials.2-5 In this paper divergent theories of cavity nucleation6-10 are examined critically and conclusions drawn regarding the most probable mechanism of formation of cavities in magnesium. The paper is divided into two parts. The first section consists of the review and quantitative assessment of the possible role of grain boundary sliding in the nucleation process. In the second part an experimental program is described where an electron-microscope technique has been used to determine if second-phase particles exist in as-received commercially pure magnesium and in a magnesium alloy 1) THEORETICAL REVIEW Possible nucleation sites for creep cavities are: a) high-angle grain boundary triple points,11-14 b) subboundary/grain boundary intersections,15-18 c) ledges in the grain boundary, 19-25 d) second-phase particles. 9,26-30 Each of these possibilities is now considered with special reference to deformation of magnesium. 1.1) Triple-Point Cracking. The stroh31 condition to nucleate fracture is: " > vr [1] where ss = applied shear stress, ? = surface energy, C = shear modulus, L = length of sliding interface. This relationship is independent of the nature of the interface and it is possible to calculate the stress concentration at the end of a sliding high-angle grain boundary and thus deduce, approximately,* the minimum applied stress necessary to nucleate triple-point cracking. Such theoretical predictions for Nimonic alloys have been made by McLean13 and found to agree quite closely with the minimum stress determined by experiment. Stresses capable of nucleating triple-point cracking should also be sufficient to nucleate fracture at a grain boundary due to intragranular slip, for the lengths of sliding interface in the two cases are approximately equal. Thus the minimum stress for triple-point cracking should represent a demarcation between failure due to general "cracking" and that due to cavitation. Hauser, Landon, and Dorn32 have demonstrated that for polycrystalline magnesium in the temperature range 78° to 298°K the fracture stress is inversely proportional to the square root of the mean grain diameter. As pointed out by stroh31 this result indicates that Eq. [I] describes the fracture characteristics of magnesium at low temperatures. Heal3 has reported that for rapid deformation (112 pct hr-1) of polycrystalline magnesium the transition from cracking to cavitation occurs in the temperature range 175" to 275°C. He also presented the fracture-stress values for the same material tested under similar conditions. From Eq. [I] taking G = 1.3 x 10" dynes , ? = 600 ergs . cm-2,33 and L = 0.017 cm, a Stroh-McLean13,31 tensile stress of -266 kg. cm-2 is calculated, corresponding to a transition temperature of -190°C; this is in

As a result of a changing market pattern for anthracite, there is now an increasing demand for steam size and a decreasing demand for domestic sizes. To help the producer meet this new demand, the authors present the technical aspects of the problem of crushing domestic sizes to steam fineness and size. The market pattern for anthracite coal has changed considerably in recent years. The demand for domestic sizes has been gradually decreasing and the demand for the steam sizes has been increasing. The companies however aim for a maximum production of domestic sizes, since these sizes command premium prices. To meet the market demands, particularly in certain periods of the year, further size reduction of the coarse clean coal is necessary. The present practice of multistage crushing in toothed rolls leads to complicated flow arrangements and is high in cost. Data presented herein indicate that crushers with high reduction ratios could be used with a resulting simplification of crushing flows and an appreciable reduction of capital and operating costs. The different types of crushing equipment investigated included the rotary-type breaker, the jaw crusher, the impactor-type crusher, and the Aerofall mill. CURRENT PRACTICE The standard sizes of anthracite are presented in Table I and market specifications require that any given size be maintained with only a limited amount of oversize and undersize material. The 1958 prices of the various sizes also are presented, so it may be seen that size reduction is only performed when dictated by market demands. At the present time the general practice of crushing anthracite consists of removing the top size and crushing it in a toothed double roll crusher to the next largest size. Consequently, to reduce the domestic egg, stove, and nut sizes to steam sizes of pea, buck, rice, and barley, the original material must be screened to produce the three top sizes and each size must be crushed in three separate rolls to the next largest size. Each crushed product must then be rescreened to remove the oversize for re crush ing. Thus a typical operation would consist of scalping the egg size from a mixture, crushing it to stove size, and rescreening the product. This same cycle would be repeated for the stove and nut sizes requiring three screens and three crushers as well as conveying equipment to handle the crushed products. This results in an expensive series of operations to make a product which sells for a lower price. If the three top sizes are crushed in one operation to the smaller sizes then the yield of steam sizes is low and the production of Nos. 4 and 5 sizes is large. These sizes sell for lower prices than the steam sizes. A typical operation is presented in Fig. 1. From the figure it may be seen that the original cleaned anthracite contains 67.4 pet domestic sizes, 26.4 pct steam sizes, and 6.2 pct fines. After multistage crushing of the domestic to steam sizes the composition of the product is 0.6 pct domestic sizes, 89.6 pct steam sizes, and 9.8 pct fines. Field experience with limestone and sandstone production indicates the existence of wide differences between the reservoir behavior of these two types of formation. Little attention appears to have been given to the separate study of the flow of fluids and the retention of fluids in limestones. This paper presents data and arguments to demonstrate the existence of a difference between the two types of formation, and urges the separate intensive investigation of limestone reservoirs. AH experimental data presented pertain to dolomitic limestone formations in west Texas and New Mexico. Two kinds of Porous media are recognized— intergranular and intermediate. Intergranular rocks are those in which the porosity and permeability are determined by the geometrical properties and the sorting of the sedimentary units; intermediate rocks, those in which there is no direct relationship between grain properties and the porosity and permeability. Limestones in general are intermediate media. The partial relationship between porosity and permeability of any class of Porous media is represelried by an area of .finite extent and definite shape on the permeability-porosity plane. The horizontal and vertical variations of porosity and of permeability in limestone and sandstone formations are discussed and compared. Comparisons are made of connate-water content, the relative permeability-saturation relationship, and capillary phenomena in the two kinds of rocks. A number of tentative conclusions are drawn relative to the reservoir properties of lime- stones; in particular, (I) dolomitic limestones are oil bearing and apparently are oil productive in zones of permeability less than 0.1 millidarcyj and (2) primary depletion (by gas expansion) oil saturations may be lower in dolomitic limestones than in sandstones. Introduction It is well known that the reservoir performance of limestones displays numerous irregularities when compared with that of sandstones, and that the departures from "normal" behavior of limestones are more frequent and generally more marked than in sandstones. This is particularly true of fractured limestones and those that have undergone considerable development of secondary porosity' A review of the literature of production research published during the past 15 years reveals a startling absence of theoretical and experimental investigations directed specifically toward explaining and predicting the performance of limestone reservoirs, even. though such problems as the prediction of water encroachment and the estimation of ultimate recoveries continue at the "inspired guess" stage. By far the greater part of the experimental data reported pertain to measurements on sandstone core samples, while the theoretical studies, almost without exception, are developed from the assumption of an ideal porous medium and therefore seldom are applicable to limestone formations. The chief cause of this situation appears to be the common belief that, to all practical intents and purposes, sandstones and the majority of producing limestone formations
