Location.—The principal manganese-deposits of the Department of Panama, Republic of Colombia, are located almost clue south of Viento Frio, a native village bordering on the Caribbean Sea, and about 45 miles northeast of Colon (Aspinwall). The mining-claims are the Viento Frio, the Carrano, the Nispero, and the Soledad. Each property is to the south of the preceding one in the order mentioned. The first one is about one mile from the coast, and the most southerly boundary of the Soledad is about five miles in a straight line from the same coast-line. I shall confine my remarks to the four properties mentioned and to La Guaca, west of the Carrano, because these are the only ones where mining has so far been done to more or less extent. Manganese has also been found, however, in the neighborhood of these deposits, and a large area adjoining them has been divided into sections and " denounced " as mining-claims. This paper, descriptive of a single mine, is presented in the belief that it may furnish useful suggestions to mine-managers encountering similar problems; and it includes the details which will enable them to estimate the value of the methods employed—especially where these depart from common practice. Tt should be added, however, that this mine is not typical of the San Juan district, but differs markedly from neighboring mines in physical conditions and metallurgical requirements. The Liberty Bell mine is situated in San Miguel county, Colo., on the west front of the San Juan mountains, 2 miles north of Telluride. The vein was discovered in 1876 by Wm. L. Cornett, who, with subsequeilt locators, took up claims along the apex. A few hundred feet of development-work was accomplished, and a few? tons of ore were smelted or milled; but profitable working proved impossible under existing

As part of a program to establish the effect of crystal imperfections on laser output, a detailed study was made of the dislocation structure of ruby crystals obtained from varioius sources. Using KHSO4 as an etchant, a detailed mapping of the dislocation structure on the (0001) and the (1150) planes was carried out. A less extensive study was made of the rhombohedral planes. The average dislocation density on the basal plane was 1.5 to 3 x 106 cm&apos;2 and on the (1120) planes -5 x 10&apos; cm-2. Howe7!er, considerable variation existed between areas on a given plane. The subboundaries in the basal plane tended to lie along [1100] type directions while those on the (1120) plane tended to lie: a) parallel to the basal plane, b) along truces of the (1101) plane, and c) along normals to the traces of the (0001) planes. The orientations suggest that mang of the dislocations lie on the (0001), (1701), and (1150) planes A Laue back-rellection nnalysis Of c-axis wander in one crystal revealed a gradual increase in misorientation from me end of the crystal to the other, with a maximum variation of 1°35&apos;. Slight etching of a mechanically polished crystal revealed mumerous polishing scratches, suggesting the existence of a plastic flow layer. It is recognized that chromium concentration, lineage, and other crystalline imperfections play a role in the efficiency of ruby lasers.&apos; Consequently, it is desirable to establish in detail the imperfection structure of ruby crystals to be used as lasers. Some exploratory work along this line had already been done by Barnes&apos; and Dils and Martin.&apos;" How- referred to as the morphological system, as described by Kronberg.4 The Miller indices given in the present paper will be based on this morphological system. In this system, the three common growth planes are the (0001), the {1120}, and the {1101}.5 Since these planes are of high stability, it is expected that they are most suitable for study by the etch-pit technique. In the present investigation, a detailed mapping of the dislocation structure was carried out for the (0001) and the (1130) planes. A less extensive study was made of the etch-pit structure on rhombohedra1 planes. An analysis of dislocations in sapphire (the ruby host) was first made by kronberg,4 who postulated that slip on the (0001) plane occurred by motion of dislocations with Burgers vector 1/3 <1150> and that these dislocations might dissociate into quarter partials. An etch-pit technique using boiling phosphoric acid was developed by Scheuplein and Gibbs6, 7 for identifying dislocations intersecting the (0001) planes and the planes near (2021) in sapphire. Al-ford and Stephens8 were able to reveal dislocations on the (0001) and {1120} planes in sapphire and ruby by etching in fused potassium bisulfate (KHS04) at 675°C. The termini of basal dislocations [(000l), <1120>] were revealed by Palmour and Kriegel9 on {1120} and {1010} by thermally etching sapphire. Bond and Harvey10 were able to decorate dislocations in sapphire by adding 1 pet by weight of ZrO2 to the Al2O3 powder used in the growth of the crystals by the Verneuil technique and then heating the grown crystals for 4 hr at 1500°C. They found, using optical transmission microscopy, that many dislocations had straight segments which were parallel to one of the six [1120] directions in the basal plane. Single dislocation lines curved smoothly from one alignment to the other, turning through angles of 60 to 120 deg. Also observed were isolated hexagonal loops, approximately 10 µ in diameter, the sides of which lay along the same directions as did the longer dislocations. MATERIAL AND ETCHING PROCEDURE The ruby specimens used in this study (all containing approximately 0.04 pet Cr) had been obtained from four different sources: Linde Co., Meller Co., Valpey Crystal Corp., and those grown at Aerospace Corp.* For the initial phase of this study, several specimens were cut from the slab shown schematically in Fig. 1 which had previously been cut from a disk boule obtained from the Linde

This study was undertaken primarily to determine the reasons for certain varia-tions in the soundness of gravel aggregate taken from a number of widely separated points on the Tennessee River. Under laboratory tests, concrete made with these various aggregates it some cases exhibited marked differences in specific gravity, crushing strength and durability. Gravel was studied in detail from Chattanooga to the mouth of the river and to a lesser extent from Chattanooga to Knoxville. The causes of variation were determined, and variational curves were constructed, which accurately predict the composition of aggregate at any point on the river and therefore its relative suitability for use in concrete. The aggregate at any point is suited for making sound concrete; the variance of suitability is due to varying percentages of sandstone and weathered material, which are less sound than other constituents.

THE deposits described in this paper occur over much of Wayne County and in the southeast portion of Hardin County, Tennessee, and in the northeast and northwest portions of Mississippi and Alabama respec-tively. The presence of tripoli in this region has been known for some time and descriptions of various occurrences in Tennessee have been made by Jewell1 and Miser2, while Hilgard3, Lowe4 and Logan5 have treated the deposits that occur in the adjacent portions of Alabama and Mississippi, but there has not been a general survey of the entire field summarizing completely the geology of the deposits with respect to their origin and stratigraphic relationships. During 1934, while engaged in surveys of mineral resources through this region for the Tennessee Valley Authority, the writer collected data with this in mind, and has assembled them in this report. He is indebted to H. S. Rankin and N. A. Rose, of the Tennessee Valley Authority Geology Division, for field assistance.

THOSE chemists (they are still greatly in the minority) who use the spectroscope, use it very often, and find it almost indispensable. As a means of detecting minute quantities of the metals it is unrivalled. A metal can be readily distinguished in the presence of any other element, compound, or mixture without the necessity of separation. The qualitative analysis of the metallic constituents of a substance, which the spectroscope gives so easily, is a sure basis for planning a chemical analysis. As the determination of each element proceeds the purity of precipitates may be checked as often as desired. If, possessing these advantages, the spectroscope has been neglected in general chemistry, it is not surprising that it was neglected in metallurgical chemistry; for many of the impurities which are of industrial interest, even when they are present in a metal or alloy in small quantities, are not then always easily detected by the examination of their visible spectrum. The history of the development of the art has been given in Bureau of Standards Scientific Paper No. 444.

Those actively interested in mining are fully aware of the ever-increasing difficulty of making conditions such that efficient work can be done in underground openings, especially as higher rock temperatures are encountered in depth. This is also true where an effort is being made to cut down the burden of overhead expense by working headings 24 hr. in a day if blasting is done as often as is possible in that time. That the conditions resulting from both these causes have driven the native-born Americans from the mines and that their places have been taken by less efficient foreigners is a fact that we must all admit. The great war now being fought in Europe and the educational qualification clause written into our immigration law by the last Congress will probably limit very materially the supply of labor, such as we are now using in our mines, and will force upon mine operators the necessity of making this work appeal again to Americans. Metal tubing, with blower or exhaust fans, has long been used in supplying air to dead ends where natural ventilation is impossible, or in driving the smoke from such places, or in doing both, as the need might be. Here in Butte we have now come to use canvas tubing very extensively and find that it has many advantages not possessed by the metal. The use of flexible tubing is not new, but it has not been generally used in mining operations. Recent improvements, however, in the canvas itself and in the jointing of sections and manner of suspension have so increased its usefulness that it promises to add much to the efficiency of mining. There is now on the market a product that is impervious to air, is fireproof, and has a system of jointing which permits it to be put up or taken down in a few seconds. In this article an effort will be made to explain the manner in which canvas tubing is being used in the North Butte company&apos;s operations at Butte, Mont. The accompanying photographs will, I hope, help make clear what may be done with this material.

THE purpose of this investigation was to determine the equilibrium diagram of the lithium-magnesium pair as a first step in studying the possible usefulness of these alloys as ultra-light structural materials. REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE The behavior of lithium towards magnesium was first investigated by Masing and Tammann.(I)? In order to prevent oxidation the alloys were made in iron tubes under an atmosphere of hydrogen; temperatures were measured with a glass-protected thermocouple. These investigators found that lithium and magnesium form two series of solid solutions separated by a miscibility gap between 85 and 95 per cent magnesium; that the alloys with 81 and 95 per cent magnesium showed a homogeneous structure under microscopic examination, while the alloy with 89 per cent magnesium contained two distinguishable crystallites; that the curve indicating the beginning of crystallization rises from the melting point of lithium to that of magnesium; and that no compounds of lithium and magnesium are formed. The equilibrium diagram was not plotted because no definite data were obtained for determining the solidus and the posi-tion of the miscibility gap in the solid state. The difficulties encountered in this investigation were: (1) that it was necessary to heat them as high as the melting point of magnesium in order to obtain homogeneous melts; at such temperatures the alloys attacked the glass protecting the thermo-couple; and (2) that at temperatures above 400° C. the lithium united

High strength, high-conductivity copper-base alloys have found considerable use in the resistance welding and electrical industry in the form of castings, forgings, or wrought products. There are a number of parts utilized by these industries which would lend themselves to manufacture by powder metallurgical methods provided the required physical and electrical properties are obtainable with such methods. The present paper describes the results of a study of certain copper-base powder metallurgical products susceptible to precipitation hardening. Copper Powders The general types of commercially available copper powders are flake, spherical and electrolytic. Micrographs of these three types are shown in Figs. I, 2 and 3. The difference in particle shape is pronounced and obvious. The type of powder used is determined, or at least indicated, by the final properties desired in the finished article. The type of powder employed during the present investigation was electrolytic powder shown in Fig. 3, and was chosen because of its particular adaptability to the work described in this Paper. The screen and chemical analyses of this powder are shown in Table I. In the preparation of compacts of high electrical conductivity, the purity of the copper powder is of importance in addition to other factors, such as density and the state of internal stresses. These variables were studied briefly by pressing a number of compacts to various pressed densities, sintering them for one hour in hydrogen at 975OC and repressing. The size of the finished compacts was 1/4, by % by 8 in. The time interval from the application to the termination of pressure was approximately 20 sec. Some of the compacts were annealed before testing. The results are listed in Figs. 4 to 8, inclusive. In Fig. 4 the curves of pressed density vs. compacting pressure, and sintered density versus compacting pressure show the typical direct relationship of pressure and density. Compacting pressures exceeding about 30 tons per sq. in. result fiequently in expansion during sintering for the type of powder used. Fig. 5 indicates that variations in the initial pressed density within the range of about 5 to 6 grams per c, c., affect only slightly the pressure required to obtain a

Although some of the observers who first paid especial attention to the occurrences of oil and gas in the strata (such as Hunt in 1859, Andrews in 1861; Winchell in 1865, Mendelejeff in 1876, Höfer in 1876, Minshall in 1881, and I. C. White in 1883) seem to have been impressed with the fact that oil and gas deposits were connected with the disturbances in the rocks caused by their upheavalll yet, with the exception of Mendelejeff, and possibly Andrews, these observers do not appear to have understood what is really the one essential factor in the occurrence of oil and gas in the strata: viz., the faulting, uplifting, fracturing, fis-suring, and jointing always accompanying even slight rock disturbances, and in certain districts (petroliferous provinces)2 allowing solfataric hydrocarbon emanations to force their way up from the interior and to reach and impregnate the porous portions of sediments subjected to the disturbances. Instead of this simple explanation to account -for the observed connection between petroleum deposits and rock disturbances, most of the observers mentioned above, and many others who have foliowed them on the same lines since, have entirely reversed the problem. To them, instead of the dissemination of gases from fissures into the sediments, it presented the accumulation and concentration, according to anticlinal or other geologic structures, of oil and gas originally present throughout the whole mass of the strata where they were produced by the decomposition or distillation of organic remains. Whether this important problem involves accumulation from sources within the strata themselves, or infiltration and dissemination from outside sources, may be easily determined if all preconceived ideas are put aside and the established facts only are considered. The competitive market potential for solvent-refined coal is estimated and the market advantages are enumerated. Markets are possible in combustion, railroad locomotion, and carbon electrodes. The combustion characteristics are consistent with expected air pollution restrictions on the emission of sulfur and particulate matter. A market potential of sufficient size exists to support the initiation of solvent refining in the United States. The market analysis should help fuel producers determine the advisability of their undertaking solvent refining of coal.

This review is based on a questionnaire sent out in 1959 to 24 Canadian exploration companies, known to be active in the mineral exploration field, concerning their practice in the use of applied geo-chemical techniques in Precambrian terrains. Of the companies questioned, 21 returned completed questionnaires and of these, 15 companies stated that they had some experience in this type of work. Of the companies who stated that they had no experience in geochemical prospecting in glaciated Precambrian areas it is interesting to note that only three have reported that they do not use applied geochemistry at all. The others have reported that they make use of applied geochemistry in New Brunswick and in the Cordillera in areas of light glaciation. Their opinion is that it is a useful aid when accompanied by other techniques in evaluating mineralized areas. GEOCHEMICAL SURVEYS Table I reviews the type of geochemical surveys used by these companies, and the following points of interest should be noted.

The distortion of crystal structures referred to as "biege gleitung",1 "local curvature"2-4 and "deformation bands"5,6 is believed to be an unavoidable characteristic of deformed single crystals. The presence of asterism on Laue photograms of Al single crystals either deformed by pure shear7 or extended in a condition relatively free from the grip effect2 indicates strong evidence substantiating this point of view. The type of localized bending described in connection with the bending test of Al single crystals by Yen and Hibbard8 could conceivably exist either microscopically or submicroscopically in all types of deformation. The purpose of this note is to extend this idea to the postulate of a hypothetical "microbending site," as applied to the mechanism of slip in a general sense. The mosiac structure, as postulated by Darwin,9 is that crystals were actually composed of small blocks which have a linear dimension 10—4to 10-6 cm on the edge and deviate from each other by an angle of about one-tenth of a degree. The following discussion is based on the assumption that when slip is propagated from one mosaic block to the adjacent one, bending of the lattice at the region of their boundary is produced in order to maintain the continuity of the gliding process along a certain slip plane. Consider a two-dimensional diagram of two ideal mosiac blocks on the cross-section perpendicular to the slip plane and containing the active direction of slip. When an external force is applied, the localized bending or "microbending site," would be generated at the region as illustrated in Fig 1A at point B. A schematic diagram of a "microbending site," generated at a mosaic boundary, is illustrated in Fig IB. It may be seen that once the curvature of the bending site reaches sufficient magnitude, the interaction force encountered by pairs of atoms symmetrical with respect to the center of the bending is equal but opposite in sign. Consequently, the overall energy required to displace the atoms near the center is approximately zero.10"12 Based upon the finding that the misalignment between two mosaics is 0.1 degree,9 the assumption is made that "microbending sites" may possibly exist in the region where one plane will have one more row of atoms than an adjacent plane. It is probable that the origin of the bending site will be where the distance between two mosaic boundaries is "2d" as shown in Fig 1A at point B, where " d" is the interatomic distance. Thus, the distance between two "microbending sites" is in the range of about 600 interplanar spacings. In the case of aluminum, the spacing between two octahedral planes is about 2.33 A. The distance between two bending sites will be approximately 2.5 X 10"5 cm. It is interesting to note that according to Woods13 these values approach closely the size of the domains of a cold-worked metal whose minimum

Notwithstanding the growing importance of this subject, no work specially devoted to it has hitherto been published. Having had to inspect during the last twenty years nearly a million tons of iron and steel rails for various countries, I have obtained experience of what rail manufacturers can practically execute, as well as of what railway engineers practically require. Bearing these two points in mind, I have from time to time published observations with a view to unite both interests,—that of the producer and that of the consumer,—and to reduce the specifications and the forms of sections to standards, or types, in order to facilitate the execution of the works and to improve the construction of permanent way. The Swedish government railways, as well as private companies owning railways in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark,.have during the time above mentioned consulted with me and intrusted to me their rail inspection. I therefore owe to these countries much of the opportunity which I have enjoyed of gaining experience and position. Next to Sweden, America is the country which has most liberally favored me with its confidence in placing these matters in my hands. Through circumstances not under my control there has been little exportation to, and less work done by Europe for, America during the last six years; but the recent revival of the rail trade has been the more gratifying to mo, seeing that almost all the importers of American rails are still specifying for the Sandberg rail sections and inspection. It is therefore with feelings of gratitude that I now beg to lay before the American Institute of Mining Engineers, and I hope, through that body, before the American railway world, the results of some experience which I have gained in the execution of work for their country, and which therefore belongs rightfully to

THIS report is the first of a series planned by The Mineral Inquiry, organized by the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers to make factual studies of the world&apos;s mineral resources in their political and international relations. The efforts of The Inquiry are directed toward filling certain notable gaps in available information, without duplication of many other investigations touching this field which" are being conducted by other organizations, public and private. Much of its work is indirect-suggesting topics for study by other individuals and organizations and aiding in their planning and correlation. The present report is designed to show the nationality of the commercial control of mineral resources, in addition to the geographic distribution of production by nation-in other words, the overlapping of political and commercial control. Detailed accuracy cannot be claimed for the figures presented. For some companies division of ownership by nationality has been very difficult to ascertain, as many companies are reluctant to dis-close the extent of their holdings in other corporations, and the impossi-bility of tracing all stock ownership is obvious. Also there are frequent changes in the distribution of stock control. The percentages given rep-resent only the participation that has been identified definitely, even though it is known in some cases with fair certainty that larger interests exist, as, for instance, American participation in foreign chromite companies. In bringing&apos; together these figures we have had the cordial co-operation of the United States Bureau of Mines, the United States Geologi-cal Survey, the Mineral Division of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, the Brookings Institution, and of many specialists connected with the mineral industries covered. The report does not cover the entire list of minerals. Coal, although it is one of the most important minerals, was omitted because not more. than one or two per cent of the world&apos;s production comes from mines that are owned by companies foreign to the countries where the coal is produced. Others, such as gold, are omitted because sufficient data have not yet been accumulated. It is hoped that some of these may be covered in subsequent reports. It is not our purpose here to discuss the significance of the figures sub-mitted, but only to point out the general nature of the problems on which they have a bearing.

Cana, originally called Santa Cruz de Cana, is situated in the province of Darien, in the Republic of Colombia, S. A. The river Cana is a tributary of the Tuyra, which flows into the Gulf of San Miguel, and thence into the Pacific Ocean some 80 rniles S.E. of the City of Panama. • The Espiritu Santo mine lies on the S. side of the Cana river at the foot of the Espiritu Santo range. The plateau of Cana has an elevation of 2000 feet above sea-level, and the mine is about 200 feet above the plateau. The map of the Darien accompanying this paper is the only correct one in existence. It was made by Lucien N. Bonaparte Wyse for the Panama Canal Co., and has been copied fur the present use, with permission, by Mr. L. G. Inglis. The dotted line on this map shows the route from the coast to Cana. As this mine was one of the most celebrated at the time of the Spanish occupation, it is only natural that there are a great many traditions and writings concerning its former workers and production. Dampier mentions it, though he does not seem to have been nearer to it than El Real de Santa Maria, the port on the Rio Tuyra, about 50 miles by road from Cana. Senor Vicente Restrepo&apos;s work, entitled Estudio sobre las Minas de Oro y Plata de Colombia, translated by C. TV. Fisher and published in New York in 1886, is, perhaps, the best treatise on Colombian mines. He has devoted a great deal of attention to the subject of the Espiritu Santo mine, and has had access to all that dealt with it in the archives of Bogota. It will be interesting to quote a few pasaages from the above work, which seemed like a romance to the writer of this paper some years ago, when he first came across the history. The quality of aggregate materials is of major importance in governing durability and permanence of concrete structures. The problem of selecting suitable aggregate materials is two-fold. Geological factors include the type and character of the aggregate source, presence of known or suspected reactive constituents, and presence of thermally incompatible materials. Laboratory investigations include petrographic studies, soundness and reactivity tests, and tests of thermal properties. The importance of each factor in the selection of satisfactory aggregate material is considered in detail.
