As part of an interegency agreement with the Energy Research end Development Administration to develop unproved refractory materials for use in coal gasification processes, the Bureau of Mines reviewed the literature to determine the effect of steam, H2, CO, and CH4 as well as the alkali metal oxides K2O and Na2O on refractory materials. Emphasis was given to the performance of high-alumina castable and fired refractories to conditions expected in coal gasification processes. Approximately 85 references were reviewed with 40 cited in the text. The literature was found to contain little data directly applicable to the selection of refractory lining materials suitable for use under the conditions of temperature, pressure, and gas compositions expected in second generation coal gasification reactors.

"In a continuing investigation into the development of uranium alloys for armament applications, some complex base alloy corn positions were modified by varying the amount of alloying elements and by removing one or two of the alloying elements in turn from the base alloys. These uranium-base alloys were specially formulated in a search for heat-treatable, high-strength, ductile, high-density alloys. All alloys studied were ternary, quaternary or more complex alloys of uranium with molybdenum, zirconium, niobium and vanadium. Each cast alloy was studied under three different heat-treatments, and its mechanical and corrosion properties were determined. It was found that although most of the alloys studied had the hardness and strength required, they were extremely brittle and notch-sensitive under tensile stresses."

Major Hazard Risk Assessment (MHRA)1 is used to help prevent major hazards, e.g., fire, explosion, wind-blast, outbursts, spontaneous combustion, roof instability and chemical and hazardous substances, etc., from injuring miners. The structured process associated with MHRA helps to characterize the major hazards and evaluate engineering, management and work process factors that impact how a mine mitigates its highest risk. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) studied the application of this technique to US mining conditions through a field-oriented pilot project. Risk assessment teams used in the pilot project were primarily composed of mining company personnel. Ten case studies were performed over a wide cross-section of mines. These mines were representative of the important mining commodities in the US minerals industry, i.e. coal, metal, non-metal, and aggregate. Also, the sizes of the mines ranged from small to large and were located across the country. The ten case studies demonstrate that most US mines have the capability to successfully implement an MHRA and that the MHRA methodology produced additional prevention controls and recovery measures to lessen the risk associated with a select population of major mining hazards. The basic ingredient for a successful MHRA is the desire to become more proactive in dealing with the risks associated with events that can cause multiple fatalities. A successful outcome is marked by a thorough examination of existing prevention controls and recovery measures. When pressed to consider more controls to further mitigate the risk, a well-staffed risk assessment team was able to identify additional controls. For these mining operations, it was important to add additional controls, even if they were not required by existing mining regulations, to lower the risks associated with the major hazards under consideration. If a mining operation is not willing to commit its best people to an MHRA or will not provide them with sufficient time to see the process through to its conclusion, the MHRA output may prove to be useless. Additionally, if a mining operation is not prepared to discuss its major hazards in an open and honest fashion and to present the findings of the risk assessment in a written report, the MHRA output will be unclear, and attempts to monitor or audit important controls may not be possible. A MHRA is most effective when the mining operation possesses 1) a proper understanding of its hazards, 2) experience with informal and basic-formal risk assessment techniques, 3) proper facilities, machinery and equipment, 4) suitable systems and procedures that represent industry Best Practice, 5) appropriate organizational support with adequate staff, communications and training, 6) a formal and thorough plan for emergency response, and 7) a safety risk management approach that is promoted and supported at all levels of the organization.

Os aços inoxidáveis duplex (AID) possuem boas propriedades mecânicas da ferrita com a resistência a corrosão da austenita. São bastante empregados na indústria petroquímica, de papéis e nuclear. Porém, são suscetíveis à fragilização por hidrogênio (H2). Amostras de AID 2205 foram recebidas na condição de recozimento de homogeneização (1100ºC por 300 s e resfriamento em água). Em seguida, foram laminadas a frio e recozidas a 1100ºC por 2 h e a 850ºC por 24 h. Foram então carregadas com H2. Análises de extração por fusão foram aplicadas para quantificar o hidrogênio no aço. Testes de tração in situ com carregamento de H2 simultâneo foram usados para avaliar a fragilização provocado por esse elemento. Completando as análises de H2, foram construídos espectros de dessorção térmica. A microestrutura foi caracterizada por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, difração de elétrons retroespalhados (EBSD), difração de raios-x e microscopia eletrônica de transmissão. Na condição envelhecida o foram identificadas as fases sigma, chi e carboneto. O AID apresentou uma redução de ductilidade considerável, alcançando 5% de alongamento já no estado envelhecido. O carregamento de hidrogênio não alterou essa condição. A extração por fusão revelou um teor de hidrogênio na microestrutura de até 50 wppm para a condição recozida, enquanto para a amostra envelhecida foi de 10 wppm. Apesar da alta fração volumétrica de fases intermetálicas e carregamento com H2, as superfícies de fratura foram caracterizadas como microcavidades e intergranulares.

"Currently construction of important structures like bridges, flyovers and high rise buildings in and around Kolkata are in full swing. These structures have mostly pile or well foundations. The design methodology and construction techniques are being employed keeping in view both the safety and economy of the project. The data presented in this investigation have been taken from Geotechnical Investigation report of Component B in connection with construction of Extradosed Cable Stayed Bridge over River Hooghly in Hooghly and Nadia district of West Bengal, India. The investigation site is located within close proximity of Eocene Hinge Zone which is being taken as the principal contributor of Earthquakes in and around Kolkata. Considering the importance of the project detailed and exhaustive geotechnical investigation has been carried out and site specific response spectra have been generated for analysis and design of the bridge. This paper presents site specific response spectra, liquefaction analysis and comparison of lateral load carrying capacity of pile using Winkler approach and IS 2911 guidelines.INTRODUCTIONPile foundations are used to transfer the load of the super structure through soft soil deposit to deeper bearing stratum by means of skin friction or end bearing or both. Pile foundations are regarded as a safe alternative for supporting structures in seismic areas and have been used for this purpose in non-liquefying as well as liquefying soils. But their design in case of potentially liquefiable soil is quite different from that of non liquefiable soil. In liquefiable soil the progressive buildup of excess pore water pressure will cause stiffness degradation and loss of strength which in turn will induce additional shear force and bending moment in the pile. The mechanism of pile behavior in liquefying soil has been investigated by several investigators in the recent years based on observations of pile performance during earthquakes and studies in the centrifuge and Shake Table tests. Exhaustive geotechnical investigation has been carried out along the proposed alignment of the Extradosed Cable Stayed Bridge i.e., along Baropara, Bansberia ROB, Ishwar Gupta Bridge, Saraswati River to collect disturbed as well as undisturbed soil sample, to develop average soil profile and to determine the design parameters. The proposed project site is very close to Eocene Hinge Zone, which is basically a strike slip fault, capable of generating an earthquake of Mw 6.7. Thus it is evident that the proposed Bridge needs to be designed considering the adverse geo-hydrological condition as well as the earthquake aspects needing special attention following the state-of-the-art technology as guided by relevant codes and published literatures. Considering the soil profile of these locations ground response analysis has been carried out using equivalent linear method to determine the site amplification. Site specific response spectra have been developed for the four zones and zone factors have been determined. The computed zone factors are 0.198g, 0.195g, 0.195g and 0.20g for the four zones respectively, much higher than the zone factor 0.16g, which is for zone III, as stipulated in IS 1893:2002."

"Here, we statistically proved that giant earthquakes occur at lunar phases specific to each subduction zone. Enough attention during the lunar period, especially when seismicity is occurring, will significantly reduce damage from giant earthquakes. Two case studies in which giant earthquakes occurred after seismicity in dangerous lunar phases were discussed, and the mechanisms underlying why giant earthquakes occur around neap tide at some subduction zones were explained by prohibition of giant earthquake occurrences due to high strain rates at spring tides at N–S subduction zones. The prohibition was statistically proven for uniaxial creep tests on Inada granite with slight stress disturbances. INTRODUCTIONIn previous studies, we showed that from 1900 to present, giant earthquakes (MW ??8) have occurred at lunar phases specific to each subduction zone (Fujii & Ozaki, 2012; Ozaki & Fujii, 2012). Although we later proposed a possible reason for these occurrences, the study lacked statistical analyses (Fujii et al., 2013). Therefore, this paper shows the results of such statistical testing and presents case studies for the Tohoku 2011 and Chile 2014 events, thereby providing updated data on giant earthquakes through July 2014."

In particular, advances have been made in processing and fabrication, especially of the light alloys, and in the surface treatment of metals. Theoretical physical metallurgy, although less active, has not been neglected and the year has brought forth some -notable contributions to our understanding of the fundamental structure of metals and their behavior in service. Of course, much work that has been done cannot be publicly discussed because of wartime restrictions.

Magnetic fields have been used for inclusions removal from melt and preparation of materials with gradient compositions. Fundamental in these applications is that the induced magnetic forces on the particles/melt can enhance migration and change the interaction behavior. In the present paper, migration and interaction behavior of electrical-insulating particles in a conductive melt under strong magnetic field are theoretically analyzed. It is found that the migration can be considerably enhanced for micrometer sized particles by applying a strong magnetic field. In addition, two forces are involved in the interaction between two particles: the interparticle magnetic dipole-dipole attractive force due to magnetization and the repulsive force induced by flow of the melt. This theoretical analysis renders a better understanding of recent experimental results. Additionally, a new method by using strong magnetic field can be proposed to control the particle size distribution for the preparation of metal-matrix composites.

Next year, the ITA will be holding its annual World Tunnel Congress (WTC) in San Francisco, CA, April 22-28, 2016. The ITA’s mission is to be the leading international organization advancing the entire industry and promoting the use of tunnels and underground space through knowledge-sharing and application of technology. This article updates a series of articles about the ITA prepared in 2007 by Harvey Parker, former president of the ITA, in anticipation of the next WTC in San Francisco.ITA accomplishes its goals through a range of activities that includes organizing conferences, workshops and meetings, working group and committee studies, training, experiments and other activities. ITA is also involved in the publication of proceedings, reports, and guideline documents as well as facilitating interaction among its membership and with sister organizations and decision makers. ITA currently includes 73 member nations and several hundred affiliate members, including 15 prime sponsors and 63 supporters. The few remaining papers will be discussed in next year's report . The trend in coal research in the Bureau of Mines was discussed in Mechaniza- tion . This publication , covering the period from the close of armed con- flict to resumption of normal coal -research activities , includes a section never previously presented . There is included for the first time a discussion of the Bureau's activities in the Liquid Fuels and Lubricants and the Solid Fuels Subcommittees of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee . This report does not replace the more comprehensive ones prepared by individual authors and listed as footnote references in this publication . purpose is to bring to the reader a résume of the work for the fiscal year ended June 30 , 1946. The material presented herein is based largely upon publications , but the results of some research and testing, which would not otherwise be published in the near future, are presented in detail .

The tensile behavior of copper foils prepared from rolled bulk material has been studied over the thickness range 2 to 53 , and for a range of pain sizes. For foils of comparable grain size, having the cube texture and tested along (100), yield strength increases with decreasing foil thickness t below -26p, with a corresponding decrease in ductility. Deformation occurs in the form of localized slip clusters distributed throughout the gage section. To the extent that the tensile strength (10 to 18 kg mm-) is unaffected by foil thickness, and that the foils possess fair ductility, the stress-strain behavior resembles that of bulk material rather than that of whiskers or evaporated films of comparable dimensions. The dependence of yield strength o on foil thickness t below -26p is of the form: oy = oo + kt-1/2. Possible explanations for the stress increase are considered based on 1) the dependence of active dislocation source length on foil dimensions, 2) the locking of surface sources, or the blocking of mobile sources at the surface due to surface film. It is now well-established that filamentary whiskers of many materials show exceptionally high strength compared with bulk crystals.'-11 As the diameter of the whiskers decreases to -1, the observed fracture strength approaches, and in certain cases exceeds, the calculated shear stress for the nucleation of slip in a perfect crystal.' In general, the stress-strain curve is entirely elastic, with strains at fracture approaching 1 pct. Similarly, thin films12-24 of evaporated or electrodeposi-ted material have been shown to possess tensile strengths three to seven times that of bulk material, with total strains at fracture -1 to 2 pct. In the present study, attention has been directed to the room-temperature tensile behavior of thin foils of copper over the thickness range 2 to 53, prepared from rolled bulk material. Yield stress, ultimate tensile strength, elongation to fracture, and work-hardening behavior are measured as a function of grain size and foil thickness. Structurally such foils are superior to either evaporated or electrodeposited films, and in the recrystallized condition exhibit considerable ductility. Apart from preliminary work by Sumino and Yamamoto25 on the work-hardening behavior of rolled and recrystallized copper foils, no systematic tensile studies have been carried out on material of this form. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Tensile specimens were prepared from 99.995 pct purity rolled copper foils of thickness 2, 6, 12, 26, and 53, obtained from the Hamilton Watch Co., Lancaster, Pa. Irrespective of specimen shape, it is necessary to use tensile foils with edges free from notches or tears. To this end, any form of cutting operation was excluded, and the tensile foils prepared using a photoengraving process, the details of which are described elsewhere.26 Since tensile data are required under conditions of uni-axial stress, the specimen shape is extremely important. Ideally, the foil should be infinitely long, allowing a gradual taper from the grip area to the gage section; however, from a practical standpoint, long foils are easily damaged during testing. A modified tensile specimen was therefore selected having a parallel gage section 1.25 by 0.20 in. with a tapered shoulder section increasing to 0.5 in. at the grips, and an over-all length between grips of 4 in., Fig. 1. In practically all tests, these foils fractured within the parallel gage section. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating longwall panel and gate road layouts to increase coal recovery and reduce multiple-seam interactive problems. This report presents design practices for longwall mining multiple seams to provide mine planners and operators with practical guidelines for designing productive longwall mines. Key aspects of mine design that control longwall interactions are examined, including sequencing of seams, design of gate road pillars, and orientation of gate roads and longwall panels. Theories that describe stress transfer between multiple scams and the mechanics of interaction are addressed in relation to geology. Common longwall designs were further investigated using a boundary element model, MULSIM/NL. The model provided insight into relative stress transfer and distribution that occurs between longwall operations in multiple seams. Findings from the model show that (1) a longwall panel should be mined from the gob to the solid coal of an overlying mine, because the stress concentrations are lower; the approach angle should be kept under 30°; and (2) when mining in descending order, superpositioning gate roads usually produces the worst stress condition. To prevent this, the overlying isolated gate roads should be positioned from the centerline toward the headgate side of the underlying panel.

The Chinese coal industry is the largest coal producer in the world. The total production in I995 was 1.28 bnt. On the way towards introducing a market economic system, this mature industry is facing major challenges. The main problems are a large surplus of manpower, shortage of current assets and capital, low productivity, high casualties and a huge deficit. This paper discusses the present situation and the future developments in the Chinese coal industry. The current policy can be stated as ‘rapidly developing the state collieries and improving the village and private mines; integrated development to achieve an economic operating scale and encouraging a diversified economy; rapidly exploiting and developing in the North west and South west; promoting productivity and efficiency; welcoming multi-sources and types of investment; setting up coal exchange markets; and the careful control of resources and the environment'.

This paper will review some of the work conducted in the past at the Dynamic Effects Laboratory to examine the use of stress waves and fracture mechanics in understanding dynamic fracture and fragmentation in blasting applications. The purpose of the study was to 1) examine the social and economic impacts of surface mine blasting in relation to variations in conditions of terrain and geology, population density and type, levels of ground motion and air blast; 2) consider technical, legal and government policy issues; and 3) examine the potential, nature and extent of surface mine blasting impacts and its regulations upon both communities and surface mining companies. Phase One designed the empirical research and technical analyses of Phase Two, focused upon surface coal mining and quarrying in the Eastern U.S. Several broad conclusions are evident: 1) blasting is not the major issue for communities or surface mine companies; 2) while the number of instances of severe cracking or annoyance are relatively small, the impact can be severe for individuals immediately involved; 3) blasting/drilling cost curves tend to rise significantly at intervals below 1.0 particle velocity, in/sec, dependent upon the size of a permit area and the size of a mine; and 4) the legal, complaint, cost and density analyses do not suggest the need for a general lowering of present regulations.

The United States Bureau of Mines is establishing a computerized mineral inventory system to help the Federal Government appraise its mineral position and prepare programs insuring against critical shortages of materials. This system, called the Minerals Availability System (MAS), is a component of the Bureau's minerals intelligence function designed to conduct and maintain an inventory of minerals important to the Nation. The MAS defines the physical and commercial availability of the mineral resources. Known resources are evaluated and classified by deposit for entry into a computer storage and retrieval system. An integral concern of these evaluations is the cost of mining and beneficiating the ore contained in specific deposits. To meet this concern, a cost handbook was developed as an aid to preparing feasibility-type estimates for capital and operating costs of mining and primary beneficiation of various types of mineral occurrences. Cost data, obtained from U.S. and Canadian companies, were used as the basis of this handbook. The handbook presents cost curves and equations for each component of the mining and beneficiation process. Factors for each cost component are also given, thereby allowing the updating of cost for time, geographic location, labor rates, and mining and milling conditions. Included in the latter conditions are items such as the length of haul, need for rock bolts, and a rock work index for ores and rocks of various hardnesses. 1.2. USE OF THE HANDBOOK Using the handbook a feasibility-type estimate falling within 25% of expected actual cost is obtainable by summarizing cost components. This handbook should not be used to determine the cost of any single component of a mining or beneficiation system, as any single component may not fall within the 257 limit. It must be understood that anyone who uses the handbook must have a comprehensive knowledge of mining and processing technology and cost estimating procedures. Mining at Vale’s Creighton Mine has been active for nearly 120 years in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Being the deepest mine in the Sudbury region, mining induced seismicity is a common occurrence at Creighton Mine. Over the past five years, 26 large magnitude seismic events ranging from 2.5 Mn to 3.7 Mn (Nuttli) have occurred. Out of these large magnitude events, three 3.0+ Mn events occurred between April 2020 and January 2021. The majority of the 3.0+ Mn events are believed to be the fault-slip type that could be linked to the known major geological structures and/or long-term effect of mining over many years. The recent large magnitude events are believed to be triggered by high induced stresses while mining the first few stopes of a new lower horizon in the top-down centre out mining sequence.

ABSTRACT: Ground stresses are one of the significant factors in the context of rockbursts and underground instability at some hard rock mines in Canada. Overcoring strain relief measurements using triaxiaI strain eel is were performed at depths between 60 to 1890 m at several mine sites to provide stress data for stability analysis and optimum mine design. Pre-mining ground stress determinations from 64 stress tensor analyses resulted in the following average stress gradients: Maximum horizontal stress. -Hmax - 8.18 - 0.0122 MPa/m depth Minimum horizontal stress. _-,,min - 3.64 - 0.0276 MPa/m depth Average horizontal stress. -11, 5.91 - 0.03-19 MPs m depth Vertical stress. '-, - 0.0266 - 0.008 MPa/m depth The maximum and minimum horizontal compressive stresses. with an average ratio of 1.75 ,0..45. prevail in east--west and northerly directions. respectively. Horizontal compressive stresses in excess of vertical overburden load were determined. indicating large variations in ratios to a depth of about 1000 m with decreasing trend towards depth. From present data. a particular regional zoning for the magnitude and direction of horizontal stress fields cannot be outlined. A common feature at mines with near vertical orebodies is that the maximum horizontal compressive stress acts perpendicular to strike while the minimum horizontal compressive stress is aligned on-strike. The vertical stress components approach the gravitational overburden load.

The influence of wastewater containing benzene from chemical industry by technology combined blow-off with Fenton reagent oxidation was experimentally studied. The present results suggest that the technology combined blow-off with Fenton reagent oxidation can effectively remove benzene pollutant in wastewater. The main factors that influence the removal benzene such as temperature and blowing time and volume, pH and reagent dosage of H2O2 and Fe2+ are studied and the optimal experimental conditions are as follows: time 20min, temperature 40i, air-blowing volume 0.4L/min, pH value 5, and H2O2 and Fe2+ dosage 2mL/L and 200mg/L respectively. Under the above conditions, benzene pollutant can be removed up to 97%. Compared to other removal ways of wastewater containing benzene, the technology combined blow-off with Fenton reagent oxidation is more effective and has the advantage of high speed.

TAXATION has become a major item in the operation of Canadian mines, and, as such, merits our most serious consideration. I feel it was a splendid idea for the Institute to set aside this time for a frank discussion of this important subject, and believe great benefit will result from a better understanding of the methods and underlying principles involved. Mining, as a great national industry, may quite properly be called upon to pay its fair share of the cost of running the country; and there is no tendency on our part to avoid this responsibility. There is, however, a very definite demand that the proportion be just, and fairly and sensibly applied. I believe that Mr. C. G. Williams, Secretary of the Canadian Metal Mining Association, and others, are giving details of the various Provincial and Dominion regulati6ns, so I shall not touch on that phase of the situation. However, there are some important factors to which I should like very briefly to call your attention. The first is the vital need for stability. As you all know, a considerable period must elapse between the preliminary stages of any mining venture and the time when it comes to production-or is finally abandoned as un-profitable. These early days are fraught with many unavoidable uncertainties. If, to these natural hazards, the apprehension of instability of governmental action be added, the risk becomes so great that capital seeks other and safer fields for investment, and many otherwise promising projects are thus discarded. There probably never has been a time in recent years when so much money was seeking investment as now. Under favourable conditions, the development of our great mineral resources would be a natural and attractive outlet for this money. The amount of taxation which the mining industry can properly absorb is of the utmost importance at this time, and it might be well to consider this question in its relation to the economic stability of our country, for it cannot be too greatly emphasized that direct taxation is only one item in the net return which our governments derive from the mining industry. Indeed, the many indirect benefits are so manifest that it would seem almost unnecessary to enumerate them! We almost invariably think of mine taxation as a direct company tax-overlooking the fact that sales tax, customs duties, acreage tax, income tax on mine dividends, foreign shareholders' dividend tax, and others, must all be taken into consideration. It would seem that the economic value of non-ferrous metal mining in Canada is not sufficiently understood and appreciated.
