The Pajingo gold operation in Queensland is approximately 55 km south of Charters Towers and 134 km south-west of Townsville. The gold deposit was discovered on the northern end of the Drummond Basin in 1983 and first open pit production began in 1986. Mining progressed underground in the 1990’s and gold production peaked in the early 2000’s as the main Vera/Nancy lodes were extracted, producing 330k oz in 2003 (a record at the time). More recently, as Ore Reserves and grade have diminished, the mine has had to develop innovative mining practices to maximise recovery of the remaining Mineral Resource. This has included a modified sublevel caving method against previously mined/backfilled zones. The method has been coined modified sublevel shrinkage (MSLS). Full scale trials of the new mining method have been successfully completed. This has allowed the site to revaluate the Mineral Resource and include areas into the Ore Reserve that were once deemed sterilised, adding significant value to the operation and extending its life-of-mine. This paper describes the first of two large scale MSLS trials and key operational learnings from it.

In 1940 the Bureau of Mines issued a report describing all the cement plants of Latin America, their design, capacity, and output, and the cement imports, exports, and requirements of the several countries. Since that time there has been such great activity in cement plant construction that a revision of the paper is highly desirable. The present compilation comprises the essential data in the previous report together with descriptions of all cement plants completed, under construction, or planned since that date and an overall picture of the supply and requirement situation of each country. Before World War I, Latin America was one of the world's largest export markets for cement. Its dependence on outside sources created no special problems of supply until the shortage of shipping and abnormally high prices of the First World War stimulated a movement toward greater self-sufficiency. Under this incentive many cement plants were constructed, and several countries were able by 1939 to manufacture enough cement for their modest needs. Substantial imports were still required for many important areas, and as the volume of demand was rapidly increasing the Latin American countries as a whole were far from self-sufficient in cement when tine Second. World War began. South and Central America depended to a large extent on European countries, chiefly Germany arid Belgium and to a smaller degree Scandinavia, United Kingdom, France, and Italy, to Supply their cement shortages. The cost of manufacture in these European countries was much lower than in the United States, and transportation expense had been kept at a particularly low level because of the two-way trade that had been developed. Ships destined for Latin American ports for coffee, tropical woods; fruits, and other native products could carry cargoes of cement on their westward voyages at very low cost In some instanced cement was taken in exchange for South American -products because cash was not available. Great Britain had withdrawn from this market to quite an extent because of low prices and because trade with its own Empire had been increasingly fostered. United States trade in cement with Latin America had been confined principally to white and other special varieties. In few places could ordinary portland cement made in the United States compete in price with the European products; although in general it was of better quality and cool d be delivered more promptly.

A cross-discipline approach combining geology, metallurgy and mine planning, geometallurgy is seen as the next logical advance in improving the design and operation of mining businesses. This rapidly evolving field is focused on realising the value that has often been lost in the chasms between the aforementioned technical silos. When successful, the geometallurgical approach promises the ability to tailor mining and mineral processing development and operational options more closely to the characteristics of the resource with resulting lower costs (both capital and operating), improved recoveries and fewer project failures.As with any technological (or managerial) change, there will be side effects from the success of the geometallurgical approach that will impact areas beyond obvious linkages between geology and processing. Some of these effects have the potential to be beneficial to the resource industry and society in general. Beyond the basic geometallurgical promise of closer alignment between processing design/strategy and the multivariate 3D spatial characteristics of the mineralisation, this paper discusses the broader implications and ramifications of the emergent geometallurgical approach: enhancing exploration and discovery; improving project development success; achieving sustainability in an industry working with non-renewable resources; in a world of increasingly hard won license to operate, improving the management of potentially harmful by-products and waste materials (with knock on effects for proactive management of closure issues); smarter approaches to energy management and thus optimisation of projects with respect to carbon footprint; and potential to re-value assets and thus realise a strategic advantage in the area of acquisitions, divestments, mergers and take overs. The authors strongly believe that companies that actively engage with the above issues (and ensure that technical efforts in the area of geometallurgy are not isolated from the larger value chain activities of the firm) will be able to exploit the opportunities that consequentially arise. These early adopters will gain first mover advantages. Firms taking the broad view of geometallurgy will have an opportunity to maximise stakeholder value and win greater success than their less insightful competitors.

The two components of pillar design formula being used in South Africa are pillar strength and pillar load. While considerable effort has been directed to the determination of pillar strength, the other half of the safety factor equation, the load, has not received the same amount of attention. The load acting on pillars has always been calculated using the Tributary Area Theory (TAT). This paper summarises the recent studies on coal pillar loading using various numerical models. It concludes that although there are meaningful differences under certain circumstances, there is still a compelling argument to use the TAT in coal pillar design. Les deux parties composantes de la formule de conception de pilier généralement utilisée en Afrique du Sud sont la résistance de pilier et la charge de pilier. Tandis que des efforts considérables on été dirigés vers la détermination de la résistance de pilier, l’autre moitié du facteur de sécurité n’a pas reçu la même attention. La charge agissant sur les piliers a toujours été calculée avec la Théorie d’Aire Tributaire (TAT). L’étude présente résume les études récentes sur la charge de pilier de charbon utilisant des modèles numériques variés. La conclusion est que bien qu’il y ait des différences significatives selon les circonstances, il y a toujours un argument puissant pour utiliser le TAT dans la conception de pilier de charbon. Während beträchtlicher Aufwand zur Bestimmung der Pfeilerstärke gemacht wurde, wurde der anderen Hälfte der Sicherheitsfaktorsgleichung nicht die gleiche Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet. Die auf die Pfeiler wirkende Last wurde immer unter Verwendung der Tributary Area Theory (TAT) berechnet. Diese Arbeit fast neuere Studien betreffend der Belastung von Kohlepfeilern unter Verwendung verschiedener numerischer Modelle zusammen. Die Schlussfolderung ist, daß obwohl unter bestimmten Vorraussetzungen bedeutende Unterschiede existieren, nach wie vor ein bezwingendes Argument besteht TAT in der Kohlepfeilerauslegung zu verwenden.

The battle of the gold standard is not limited to one country alone, or even to a single group of countries. It is being waged merrily in many important commercial and industrial quarters. Though it is not always a practical issue calling for immediate attention, it is none the less, quite widely, engaging the thought of bankers and other students of finance. The controversy arises, in the last analysis, because of the desire of men to secure a stable currency. There are two ways of restoring a reasonably stable currency system: (1) the re-establishment of the gold standard, or (2) the deliberate and artificial management of a paper currency. Both systems are well known. The gold standard was in use prior to the war in the principal commercial countries. A currency of inconvertible paper has been at times employed in the past in various countries; for example in Britain from 1797 to 1821, and in the United States from 1862 to 1879. The gold standard, as all are aware, implies the selection of gold as the standard of value. The unit of value is a fixed weight of gold and, so long as the standard remains unimpaired, all other means of payment are maintained at a parity with standard gold coins. And gold coins alone constitute the standard money, inasmuch as their value as bullion equals their value as coins. Under the gold standard this would not be true of any other form of money, although all other varieties of money, including bank notes, government notes and silver coins would be freely convertible into gold money. Strictly speaking, the gold standard also implies that the gold money in turn shall itself be freely convertible, through melting, into gold bullion and freely exportable.

A mathematical model was developed to assess the costs for reclamation of surface mining using the shovel overcasting operation, the front end loader operation, and a backfilling operation. A literature review was made of the present laws in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia pertaining to surface mining and of the various parameters that influence the input data for a mathematical model. It was determined that the working mathematical model would have to be applied on an area to area basis, preferably on a permit by permit basis in the area where surface mining was being done. To this end, a flexible model was developed with input data obtained from the area of study. The results of the study show that the cost per ton of coal for reclamation can be estimated for various reclamation levels. Validation of the model was done for selected permits from Virginia. It was determined that the permits could easily be used for input data to the model.

Les résultats décrits ici, particulièrement les profits de contraintes de cisaillement le long de l'ancrage, obtenus à partir des valeurs de déformations relevées sur les jauges, ont permis de préciser le niveau de chargement correspondant à la décohésion initiale du coulis de scellement, d 'examiner l'effet de la décohésion sur la distribution des contraintes et de caractériser le fluage du système barre d'ancrage/coulis de scellement.ABSTRACTThe load transfer mechanism and the debonding process along grouted rock anchor, subjected to tention loads, can be examined through the instrumentation of the anchor with the aid of strain gauges. In this context, the resultsof a full-scale site investigation including classical pull out tests and creep tests are presented in this paper. These tests were performed on instrumented bars which were cement grouted in a competent rock mass. Results presented in this paper concern, among others, shear stress pro/ties along the grouted anchors which were determined from strain values obtained from the strain gauges. These results have been used to: (1) predict the load level corresponding to initial debonding of the grout; (2) study the effect of debonding on shearstress distribution along the anchor; and (3) characterize the creep behavior of the bar anchor/cement grout system."

The computer program, HYBMODE, has been developed to meet the need for a fast and economical method for clustering data points on the sphere. The algorithm used in this development is an extension of D. Wishart's one-level mode analysis. The program can be used to cluster either vectorial or axial data; it is currently being used by the Bureau of Mines to cluster fracture orientations.

I. INTRODUCTION. REPEATED failures in attempts to work gold-bearing gravels by means of suction-dredges have created the impression that this method is impracticable. The suction-dredges have failed from three special causes excessive wear and frequent breakage of pump-shell, runners and liners; inability to dredge compact gravel which would ,not. readily move towards the intake; and, most important of all, closing. of the suction-pipe by stones too large to enter it. In my opinion, all three causes of trouble may be remedied: the first, by making stronger the parts most liable to wear and breakage; the second, by means for loosening the gravel at the intake; and the third, by sufficiently... Increasing.. the diameter of the suction-pipe. In suction gold-dredges, this diameter has not usually exceeded 10 or 12 in.; whereas there are few profitable gold-fields which can bee considered dredgeable, in which stones more than' 12 in. in diameter, are-.not frequently encountered. II. AN EFFECTIVE SUCTION-DREDGE. In harbor-operations, much larger stones are handled by suction-dredges.., The large dredge of the Henry Steers Contracting Co. worked for nearly four years at League Island, Philadelphia, where it sucked up, passed through the pump, and forced through 3,700 ft. of discharge-pipe; gravel containing boulders up to 200 lb. in weight. This was done with no bad breaks and few shut-downs. The cutter; and liners were the only parts liable to damage, and these were easily replaced with brief interruption of work. This report presents research results obtained in the investigation of deviation control of boreholes in the rotary drilling process. The approach taken in this research is the passive method of placing stabilizers in the bottom-hole assembly to control deviation. Extensive use was made of the drill string mechanics theories of Lubinski and Woods. Analog, digital and hybrid solutions to variety of boundary value problems were investigated in order to determine the best models for bottom-hole assemblies. Field drilling data was analyzed and the results obtained from various models were compared to the actual drilling results. Various accomplishments of this work have been published in open energy industry literature, with more publications to follow.

The U.S. economy made significant progress in 1984. The current-dollar gross national product (GNP), the market value of the Nation's output of goods and services, increased almost 11 percent over that of 1983 to slightly more than $3.66 trillion (table 1), and the real gross national product increased almost 7 percent.2/ Such rapid growth in real GNP has not occurred since the early 1950's. Real final sales increased only 5 percent during 1984, and real business inventories increased $24.8 billion ($57.9 billion in current dollars). Total employment of 106.7 million was an all-time record, and the unemployment rate declined from 9.5 percent in 1983 to 7.4 percent in 1984. During 1984 the U.S. dollar showed great strength on international markets, contributing to large current-dollar negative net exports of goods and services (-$62.5 billion) and even larger negative net exports of merchandise (-$107.6 billion). The strong dollar and the substantial increase in net imports of goods and services helped reduce U.S. inflationary pressures and provided a major source of loanable funds for financing domestic private investment.

Safety problems in the mining and allied industries have led the Bureau of Mines to investigate over a period of years; the flammability (explosibility) of many types of combustible atmospheres principally at ordinary pressure; the results of these investigations have been made available as a bulletin. However, more recently, the demand for information on the flammability of gaseous mixtures at high and low pressures has increased greatly. In particular, the rapid development of high-altitude aviation has brought demands for information on the flammable (or explosive) characteristics of certain gases and liquids at low pressures. The present report gives the results of about 900 tests made to determine the flammability of the lighter paraffin hydrocarbons mixed with air and nitrogen at pressures of 400 200, 100 and 70 ram. Hg. The gases tested include natural gas, methane, ethane, propane normal butane and isobutane. The minimum pressures at which these gases are capable of propagating flame whorl individually mixed with air also were investigated.

This Bureau of Mines report deals principally with the resources and economic aspects of feldspar in the United States east of the Mississippi River. Although in a strict sense, all phases of the feldspar industry affect its economic structure, emphasis in this study is on supply, demand, and marketing. Although feldspar was originally mined for use in the manufacture of pottery and other ceramics, the glass industry, which began to use feldspar in the mid-1920's, now consumes more than half of the annual output. Most mining is open cut, and the methods used are similar to those used in mining crushed b stone. Excess plant capacity has been chronic, and production is usually about 30 percent of capacity fur the industry as a whole. Since 1947, feldspar consumption has grown more slowly than the average for all U.S. industry. This has fostered intense competition, especially for the glass market. Prices have not kept pace with inflation, and profits are small. The trend of consumption through 1970 for glass feldspar is expected to be upward; less rapid in consumption of ceramic feldspar is anticipated.

Most of the Indian coking coals are medium coking and of very high ash content. Beneficiation of these coals is a must for their utilisation in coke making. During washing while the ash content of the coal is reduced, the same is expected to affect the reactive-inert ratio and the proportion of various petrographic constituents in the clean coal. This will affect the coking behaviour, including the expansion characteristics, of such coal. An increase in expansion behaviour of coal increases the wall pressure and may damage the battery wall. Therefore, close monitoring of coking properties along with drop in ash is necessary for smooth use of the coal in coke ovens. An effort is, therefore, essential to understand the impact of washing on its coking properties. The studies were carried out with captive coals of Tata Steel, India. Three medium coking coal samples namely, VII A, VI A and XI SEB seam coals of West Bokaro Colliery were used for the study. The coal samples after washing to different ash levels were subjected to the following analysis: proximate, crucible swelling number (CSN), LT GK test, dilatometer and plastometer tests and petrography. The experimental data were then analysed to assess the relationship of various coking properties of the coal with its ash content. The studies clearly show that there is a strong impact of beneficiation of the coal on its coking behaviour. The impacts are more at lower level of ash in the clean coal. In general, the coking properties increase with a decrease in ash. This is primarily due to an enrichment of vitrinte materials in the clean coal and an increase in the reactive-inert ratio in the coals. However, the most important impact of the lowering ash is on the increase in the swelling nature of the coal. The coals with lower ash become highly expanding in nature. This may be very critical from operations of coke ovens point of view, especially stamp charged coke ovens. Necessary precaution should be taken in selecting the other coal blend constituents when these coals are beneficiated to a very low level of ash content.

An investigation was conducted to study possible sources of Utah refractory and structural clays that could be used for the manufacture of refractories and light or buff burning heavy-clay products. A field study was made and the clay samples tested to determine their firing characteristics. Results of the Bureau's work indicate many small noncommercial deposits of hypogenic clay occur in igneous rocks. Commercial hypogenic deposits are mostly halloysite clay developed by hydrothermal replacement of limestone. The high firing shrinkage of halloysite precludes its use as a refractory, however, halloysite produced at the Dragon Mine south of Eureka, is used fur making oil catalysts. Clays and shales suitable for low heat duty refractory products are found in the Manning Canyon shale, in shales associated with coal bearing rocks, and in the Dakota formation. Some of the clays from the Dakota formation are also suitable for high-duty refractory products.

The monetary metals , gold and silver , have recently been the object of such general interest that the United States Bureau of Mines has received many inquiries regarding them . Though requests for technologic information have been numerous , they have been exceeded in number by those concerned with economic aspects of these metals . The nature of the latter communications indicates that the public is not generally aware that various Bureau publications are available which deal with the economic situation of gold and silver . For this reason , it is deemed advisable to present a brief résumé of the papers which are obtainable from the Bureau or the Superintendent of Documents , together with the text of three articles recently prepared by the Director , reprints of which are not otherwise available . The Bureau of Mines compiles figures showing mine production of gold and silver , by districts and States , and cooperates with the Bureau of the Mint in determining the total annual output in the United States as a whole . 3 It recently established an annual canvass to determine the consumption of silver in the arts and industries of the United States , and published an economic paper covering such use in 1928 and 1929 , followed by an information circular on silver consumption by industry during the 2 years subsequent . A 4-year record is thus provided for those interested in utilization of silver . The Bureau has also published summarizations of all available data upon world production since 1493 of gold and of silver . It has , furthermore , rendered available a compilation of production- data of silver mines of the world , and an analysis of it , showing the proportions of silver and other metals contained in all the ores from which silver is derived . " All of these papers are concerned solely with putting into readily usable form statistical data and other factual material ; they do not offer theories or express opinions upon controversial questions related to these metals . Three other recent papers concerned with gold and silver are presented below in order to put them in shape for distribution by the United States Bureau of Mines . "The mines of the future present a host of challenges, which may appear exciting or daunting, depending on one’s perspective. Whether some sectors of the public recognize it or not, the demand for raw resources is not going away any time soon. In fact, it is rising, as the global population grows, urbanizes and attempts to steadily increase quality of life. Yet, at the same time that much of the highly developed world is calling for greener goods, reduced consumption and cleaner production, in other areas there are cries for clean water and sanitation, consistent energy supply, access to health care and education, personal security and support for basic human rights. The balancing act for sustainable development of our global society is, indeed, precarious and the mining community is a key player. Fortunately, many industry members have accepted this role and the responsibility to provide leadership and a solid foundation for progress. Looking ahead, we need new generations of leaders, including many mine engineers who are ready to tackle all sorts of complex problems.There are tremendous needs just for technological innovations. Increasingly tough deposits will require that the industry continues to expand scale toward “mega pits” and “super caves;” fully develop unconventional recovery techniques like in situ leaching and gasification or deep-sea extraction and seriously consider off-earth endeavors. Such work will take entirely autonomous equipment, novel separations, processing and recycling methods, and systems that can withstand extreme physical conditions, just to name a few. It will also take a level of systems integration never-before seen in the mining industry, complete with big data issues, sophisticated predecitve analytics and modeling efforts and cyber-security challenges.Moreover, increasingly complex environmental problems will require creative solutions. Addressing issues like pollution control across multiple media, emerging contaminants, optimal management of wastes, selective mining and shared use of resources between mine operations and surrounding communities and ecosystems are among the top priorities. Really, a complete paradigm shift must occur, such that the focus is on overall improvement of environmental conditions, rather than minimization of impacts. A similar shift will be required in the social realm. How can miners be safer and healthier on-site and off? How can the industry contribute to communities such that they are better off, now and longterm, for having a mine next door? How can artisanal mining practices be transformed to also contribute to sustainable development? How can the industry’s work be a factor in increasing economic and political stability? How can the public understanding of raw resources and the need for mining enterprises be improved?Given the coming challenges, there is no doubt that the mine engineers of the future will need highly diverse skillsets — meshing traditional and contemporary competencies to a degree not previously considered in mining, or most others fields. To be sure, the scope and scale of mining projects make them wholly different than most other engineering work, aside from perhaps the largest civil and urban development projects. While on-the-job experience will continue to be essential, formal education programs (i.e., at post-secondary institutions) must lay critical groundwork."

DR . JOHN A . CHURCH, in his treatise on the Comstock Locle 1 gave a full and clear account of the conditions of the mine during the period of greatest activity. The difficulties in the way of deep mining at that time were excessive water and high temperature. The drainage of the mines taxed the financial resources of the mining companies, and the high temperatures restricted the capacity of the miners for underground labor. In spite of these difficulties exploratory work was continued until the financial burden of removing the water became too great. The companies then restricted the work to the upper levels. The years 1883 to 1886 marked the period of cessation of deep mining. For 12 years thereafter mining was confined to the levels above the Sutro tunnel; and, while the question of drainage was more or less agitated, nothing of importance was done until the formation of the Comstock Pumping Association in 1898. Since that time successive levels have been drained until, at present, on the north-end mines, a depth of 700 ft. below the Sutro-tunnel level has been reached. Mining is now carried on in the Ophir mine from the 1,700- to the 2,200-ft. levels, and a winze is being sunk to make connection with the 2,300-ft. level (the 2,450 ft. of the C. & C. shaft). In 1903-the Ward Shaft Association was formed to undertake the draining of the Central and Gold Hill group of mines, and at the present time a depth of 2,500 ft. has been reached in the Ward shaft. The situation at the Ward looks promis¬ing, and the 3,000-ft. level may be reached in the near future. It is proposed to establish a large pumping-station on this level, and then begin the opening of known ore-bodies and the prospecting for new ones. The main factors which have contributed to the successful solution of the drainage problem are the Sutro tunnel, the use of the hydraulic elevator as a sinking-pump, the concentration of pumping-units, and cheap electrical power. The question of high temperature and its control still remains as a minor but important problem. The temperatures encountered in the new workings are as great as those in the earlier periods. The Comstock was considered the hottest group of mines in the world, and I am not aware of similar conditions in any other mining-district. A water-temperature as high as 160° F. has been reported from the Ward shaft, and temperatures below the Sutro tunnel are very high in many instances.
