(communication to the Secretary*): The hold experiment of Mr. James Gayley in drying the blast used in the Isabella furnace has attracted the attention of the whole metallurgical world, and has given rise to a wide discussion of the reasons for its great success. Mr. Gayley and the capitalists who backed him in his work deserve congratulations on the success of the venture, not only because it succeeded, but because they have been rewarded far beyond the maximum that could be expected from theory or probability. To state the case in its simplest terms, all that could have been predicted was: (1) that the removal of the moisture from the blaet would result in the saving of the heat required for its decomposition, representing from 3 to 5 per cent. of the heat-value of the coke used; hence about that quantity of fuel might be saved; (2) that the furnace would be somewhat more independent of variations in the weather; (3) that the campaign would be a little hotter; and (4) that the speed of the blowing-eugines would be decreased, at least in amount proportionate to the reduction in temperature of the air led to them. I do not think anyone anticipated a much larger output per day. The results actually attained were: (1) the furnace made an increase of 24.86 per cent. in the output of pig-iron per day; (2) it consumed 19.6 per cent. less coke per ton of pig-iron made; (3) the blowing-engines were run 15.8 per cent. slower; and (4) the saving in power made up for the power required to run the refrigerating-plant. In this paper, two types of low-grade complex zinc oxide ores (sandstone and limestone ores) from Yunnan province, China were investigated. A large number of argillaceous and alkaline gangue makes it infeasible to treat the ores with heap leaching. Although wet metallurgy can be considered, the lower efficiency of liquid-solid separation, the high cost, and low revenue limit this technology to be put into practice in large-scale. In order to solve this problem, a new technology combining mineral processing method with metallurgy technique is studied to process this refractory ore that consists of sandstone ore with 5.84 per centZn and limestone ore with 6.50 per centZn. The results of the tests showed that zinc can effectively be recovered from two types of the ores by using the new technology, and the acid consumption can be remarkably reduced. For sandstone sample, 82.96 per cent Zn was recovered by flotation and final Zn recovery by flotation+ hydro-metallurgy can be up to 78.17 per cent from the ore. In addition, for sandstone, acid consumption can be reduced from 270kg/t by direct acid, leaching to 76.92kg/t by flotation + hydrometallurgy combination. For limestone sample, 85.90 per centZn was recovered by flotation and totally 80.95 per cent Zn can be recovered by new technology which is a combination of mineral processing and metallurgy. Besides, H2SO4 consumption can be reduced from 450kg/t for sandstone originally to113.79kg/t after using new technology. One merit of this new process technology is that the zinc sulfides and oxides can be recovered without desliming in the flotation cells at the different stage and make sure the concentrate products as a good feed for hydrometallurgical technology. This study provided pretty good technical support for tapping low-grade refractory zinc oxide ores. As the usage of BIM increased in the construction industry, some construction owners started exploring the use of BIM for maintaining their facilities. Construction Operations Building Information Exchange (COBIE), a spreadsheet data format suggested in 2007 to manipulate building information, is considered as one of the solutions that would facilitate the process of transferring information from BIM to applications for facilities management. Several BIM and Computer Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) applications offer functions to export or import the COBIE data. To facilitate the process of generating the COBIE data out of Building Information Model, some add-in applications, such as COBIE Toolkit for Revit, also were developed. However, most of these applications handle a limited amount of COBIE data. Professionals using these add-in applications therefore sometimes end up spending a significant amount of time to add additional data manually to the COBIE data file. To automatically get a data-rich COBIE file, we developed a prototype application that extracts information from Revit, which is one of the BIM authoring tools, stores them in an external database, and then produces the COBIE file using information stored in the database. We applied our application to a pilot project and produced 8 COBIE worksheets automatically, which demonstrated a significant amount of time saving. This paper presents how our prototype application produces 8 COBIE data sets automatically. It also addresses our attempt to handle more COBIE data sets.

Westman-Besides decreasing the diamond size, there appear to be two other approaches open to overcome excessive diamond loss and, more particularly, the rapid diamond polish that took place in this quartz-feldspar rock. First, however, a short discussion of the diamond characteristics should be made in order to discuss the situation more clearly. The West African diamonds which we can assume were used. for this drilling have two disadvantages when drilling hard, exceptionally fine-grained rocks. These are rapid polishing and, if .the bit isn't "drilled in" carefully, a tendency to damage, resulting in excessive diamond loss. The normal wear resistance of any diamond is inversely proportional to the compressive strength of the diamond, therefore only the highest grade, of diamonds free from insipient fractures should be employed. Using upwards of 90 diamonds per carat instead of the20 to 30 per carat not only decreases the total projected area of the cutting points but increases the stress per point which, in turn, causes greater depth of penetration into the rock. Considering this depth of penetration, therefore, suggests an approach other than increasing the, number of diamonds per carat and that is to decrease the actual number of diamond points (also the carat weight per bit) so that the penetrating force on an individual diamond is increased. This penetration increases the chipping or rock shearing action.

"The Windarra nickel deposits display many of the characteristics that typify Archaean volcanic peridotite-associated nickel sulphide ores of Western Australia. The Fe-Ni-Cu sulphide mineralization, which comprises dominantly disseminated sulphides, occurs at the base of a differentiated ultramafic volcanic pile grading upwards from massive meta-peridotitic flows to thin, locally spinifex-textured meta-picritic units. The entire mafic-ultramafic belt has been subjected to mid-amphibolite- facies metamorphism. The ore-bearing ultramafic is immediately underlain by dominantly sulphide-facies banded iron formation (BIF), which commonly contains nickel sulphides adjacent to its contact with mineralized ultramafic. BIF-hosted ores are formed both by physical remobilization of ultramafic-hosted sulphides and by migration of Ni and Cu into pre-existing iron sulphides.At Mt. Windarra the mineralization comprises eight steeply dipping, steeply plunging elongate oreshoots, which display a marked parallelism with major and minor fold structures in the underlying BIF. Seven of the shoots occur at or close to the base of the ultramafic pile, and are hosted by at least three overlapping flows. The zone of overlap occurs at the northern end of each flow, where picritic ultramafic, representing a dominantly liquid portion of the flow, occupies the basal contact. A gross south- north ultramafic flow direction is inferred. The eighth shoot occurs in a stratigraphically higher position within the ultramafic sequence.At South Windarra at least two overlapping mineralized flows occupy the basal contact, the ore zone having a strike extent three to four times its downdip extent. There is no obvious structural control to the mineralization."

On the other hand, the uneducated man, though shrewd and well-informed, will relate facts and events as they recur to him, generally in disorder; in his effort to recollect and in his attempt to rectify forgetfulness he will pause irregularly, filling the intervals with meaningless phrases, such as "and then ", "and: so ", or 'said he to me", "said I to him"; and even the contipuous parts of his story will be told confusedly-because he has not learned the proper use of words.* My own experience as an editor of technical manuscripts has taught me that the misuse of 'that' and 'which' is a fruitful cause of obscurity and confusion. Silicon Carbide is an excellent refractory material. Its physical properties make it extremely useful, particularly in applications where corrosion resistance and wear are important considerations. Commercial silicon carbide refractory is frequently manufactured by bonding silicon carbide particles with clay; however, clay may cause problems in the sintered products. This study investigates the potential of replacing a portion of the clay with andalusite powder. The results show that micron size andalusite powder can improve not only the strength of the refractory but also the sinterability. The mechanisms for these improvements are discussed.

Research on alternative lixiviants for gold is ongoing; however few people have looked at complete flowsheets. Alternative lixiviants are typically applied at concentrations 50 to 100 times those required for cyanidation. The higher concentrations make lixiviant recycle a vital part of the process. In addition it is no longer feasible to rely on lixiviant destruction to produce lixiviant free clean water for recycle to the comminution circuit. Ausenco has worked with Barrick to integrate reverse osmosis into the thiosulfate RIL processing flowsheet that forms the basis of the plant upgrade currently being constructed at Barrick’s Goldstrike autoclave facility.

An access pathway and working platform were designed and constructed for equipment access for a Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) pilot study over a coal combustion residual (CCR) surface impoundment (SI). The DSM pilot study was conducted to evaluate slurry mix designs and construction techniques for installing DSM columns up to 95 feet deep. Two-dimensional (2-D) limit equilibrium and 2-D finite element analyses were used to evaluate multiple failure mechanisms including: (i) bearing capacity, (ii) punching shear of mixed ground and underlying CCR, (iii) effect of fluidized DSM columns on working platform stability, and (iv) liquefaction. The analysis results were used to design ground improvement required to increase bearing capacity and stability of the CCR under the proposed equipment access route. A long-reach excavator was used to perform shallow bucket mixing and walk onto the CCR SI atop previously mixed cells following a minimum cure time and acceptance of quality control test results. Prior to mobilizing the DSM rig, a static load test was conducted to evaluate performance of the working platform. Both the access pathway and working platform demonstrated acceptable performance under the design loads during the DSM pilot study. This case study emphasizes the economic and safety benefits that can be realized by appropriately designing critical temporary work items such as access pathways and working platforms in difficult ground conditions. INTRODUCTION A Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) pilot study was conducted at a coal combustion residual (CCR) surface impoundment (SI) to evaluate slurry mix designs and construction techniques for closure design of the SI (Site). Sluicing of CCR at the facility ceased and closure will be initiated based on requirements in the final United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Rule for Disposal of Coal Combustion Residuals from Electric Utilities, 40 CFR 257, effective October 19, 2015. The proposed closure approach involves constructing a DSM containment structure (DSM Wall) to separate the SI into two areas: (i) a closure by removal area; and (ii) a consolidate and cap-in-place area. The proposed DSM Wall would retain the CCR within the consolidated closure footprint and provide a barrier between the two areas of the SI. The predominant CCR in the SI where the pilot study was conducted were fly ash and bottom ash. CCR materials in surface impoundments are generally soft and saturated as a result of being sluiced into place and can present stability and safety challenges when performing earthwork activities.

Experience with knowledge-based systems for Layout planning and roadway support dimensioning is on hand in European coal mining since 1985. The systems SOUT (support choice and dimensioning, 1989), SOUT 2, PLANANK (planning of bolt-support), EXOS (layout planning diagnosis. 1994), Sout 3 (1995) have been developed in close cooperation by CdF1. INERIS2. EMN3 (France) and RAG 4, DMT5, TH - Aachen6 (Germany); ISLSP (Integrated Software for Layout and support planning) development is in progress (completion scheduled for July 1996). This new software technology in combination with conventional programming systems. numerical models and existing databases turned out to be suited for setting-up an intelligent decision aid for layout and roadway support planning. "When pyrite oxidizes in dark grey/black, calcareous, mudrocks or in argillaceous limestones, ferrous sulfate is formed and sulfuric acid is released. The sulfuric acid combines with the calcite present in the rock and calcium sulfate (gypsum) develops. When this occurs on the outer edges of aggregate particles, the gypsum forms in the matrix hence there may be little expansion of the general material. However, when the chemical reactions occur within the rock fragments, particularly on microscopic, clayrich, laminae, the developing crystals exert a significant pressure on the host material. If the rock is medium strong to strong, the force of crystallization splits the rock along the weaker planes, facilitating the ingress of the oxidizing agents and the continuation of the chemical reactions. In addition to causing dilation/heave, some of the engineering properties of the material are changed, including the strength, Los Angeles value, water absorption etc. As a consequence material, which at the time of quarrying would be acceptable for use beneath floors or hardstandings, would no longer be considered suitable.INTRODUCTIONMudrocks accreting in aerobic environments are frequently disturbed by organisms and as a consequence there is often little sign of bedding. In contrast, sediments which have formed in anoxic environments commonly have distinct bedding planes which, because of the grain size of the accreting material, are often smooth and planar. These rocks are frequently referred to as shales, which O’Brien and Slatt (1990) define as “characterised by a finely laminated structure, which imparts a fissility approximately parallel to the bedding.” This should not be confused with rhythmic bedding where the variation in grain size results in lithological laminations or colour changes.Early geologists, in the stratigraphic naming of rocks, often used the term shale for material which is now more likely to be described as mudstone or mudrock (Hawkins and Pinches, 1992). In many contexts, the width of the bedding is an important factor, not only in determining the rock name but also in indicating the potential engineering characteristics. Until recently a shale was considered to have bedding separations of less than 20mm, i.e. the bedding was described as laminated. However, in an engineering context, EN 14689: 2003, Annex A, defines shale by specifying a bedding thickness of < 6mm; such a material would be described as thinly laminated in BS 5930:1999. Ideally the term shale should be abandoned and be replaced by fissile mudstone or fissile mudrock."

To evaluate methane explosion hazards in underground longwall coal mines, researchers at the Colorado School of Mines developed a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model along with a 1/40th-scale, optically accessible, physical model of a longwall mining section. In this project, CFD models assisted in the design of the physical model to ensure specifications were met to accurately represent the scaling physics as well as to assist in narrowing the experimental matrix and identifying key locations for sensor placement to measure velocity, pressure and gas concentrations. This research will help develop strategies for methane monitoring to prevent methane ignitions and explosions in longwall coal operations.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating low-chromium alloy substitutes for type 304 stainless steel (type 304 SS). The purpose of the research is to reduce the chromium content in austenitic stainless steels used for corrosion-resistant applications. Nine Fe-9Cr-12Ni alloys containing additions of 0 to 5 pct Mo, 0 to 2 pct V, and 0 to 2 pct Cu were selected for evaluation. All of the experimental alloys containing 5 pct Mo and an alloy containing 2Mo-2V-2Cu possessed structure and tensile strengths similar to those of type 304 SSe Alloys containing SMo-2V and SMo-2V-2Cu had ac-ceptable welding properties as measured by the Varestraint test. Alloys containing at least 2 pct Mo had cQrrosion resistance comparable to that of type 304 SS in solutions of nitric acid, phosphoric acid, acetic acid, and citric acid. In chlorides, all the experimental alloys were susceptible to localized corrosion and stress corrosion cracking similar to that of type 304 SSe The corrosion properties were established by weight-loss tests, electrochemical polarization tests, and stress-corrosion cracking tests. An Fe-9Cr-12Ni-SMo-2V alloy and an Fe-9Cr-12Ni-SMo-2V-2Cu alloy had a combination of welding properties, tensile properties, and corrosion resistances that were most comparable to those of 304 SS.

This Bureau of Mines report is an expansion and update of Information Circular 8719 and comprises maps and tables listing the name, location, and other pertinent data concerning certain fuel-related projects. The maps show the locations of the planned or proposed facilities. The tables include information on projects involving the proposed or planned development of fuel resources, as well as the development of storage, transportation, and conversion facilities. The report covers the 24 States west of the Mississippi River including Alaska and Hawaii. Of the 808 projects for which information is provided, 219 concern coal mines, 246 concern electric generating plants, and 115 concern uranium mines; Energy Supply and Environmental Coordination Act coal conversion notices are also included. Because of the dynamic nature of the energy industry, many uncertainties exist and some of the listed projects may never become realities. Also, no attempt has been made to determine the degree of certainty or viability of each project.

The optimum cut-off grade policy maximizes the net present value (NPV) of an open pit mining operation subject to the mining, processing, and refining capacity constraints. The traditional approaches to cut-off grade determination ignore the escalation of the economic parameters such as metal price and operating costs during life of an operation, and consequently lead to unrealistically higher values of the objective function. Further, the NPV of a mining operation declines due to the depletion of the available reserves, causing a decline in the optimum cut-off grade, i.e. higher cut-off grades in the early years of an operation and lower cut-off grades during the later years. Hence, low grade material mined in the earlier years may be stockpiled for processing during later years to offset the effect of escalating economic parameters on NPV. This paper demonstrates the combined impact of introducing economic parameters, escalation and stockpiling options into the cut-off grade optimization model. The model promises an enhancement in NPV as illustrated in a case study incorporating practical aspects of an open pit mining operation.

Accurate flammability and ignitability data for chemicals form the cornerstone of procedures used to assess the hazards associated with commercial chemical production and use. Since 1967 the ASTM E27 Committee on the Hazard Potential of Chemicals has issued numerous, widely used consensus standards dealing with diverse testing and predictive procedures used to obtain relevant chemical hazard properties. The decision to issue a standard rests solely with the membership, which consists of representatives from industry, testing laboratories, consulting firms, government, academia, and instrument suppliers. Consequently, the procedures are automatically relevant, timely, and widely applicable. The purpose of this paper is to highlight some of the widely used standards, complemented with hypothetical but relevant examples describing the testing strategy, interpretation, and application of the results. A further goal of this paper is to encourage participation in the consensus standards development process. The paper is published in two parts. The first part (in the preceding issue of Process Safety Progress) dealt with the E27 standards pertaining to thermodynamics, thermal stability, and chemical compatibility. Indications are that underground mining is gaining favour with large and small mining companies due to environmental and sustainability concerns. Dramatic changes to mine fill technologies will be needed in order to keep pace with these emerging trends. The industry will be compelled to gravitate toward zero discharge mining operations. Innovative handling of mine tailings will become a focal point in this effort. The challenges are to use a greater portion of the residues and to manufacture a fill with better properties. This is a tall order that can only be addressed through a systematic research and implementation process involving mining companies, universities, research organizations, manufacturers and governments. The mining industry has to be at the forefront of this technology push in mine fills for the future mines. It will also be called upon to lead the way in other research areas. The industry will have to partner with other technology providers: universities, government laboratories and consultants.

The data in this bulletin were obtained during an investigation of screening practice by the University of Illinois engineering experiment station and the United States Bureau of Mines under a cooperative agreement between them and the State of Illinois Geological Survey Division. Earlier work on this subject includes a study of the general practice of coal preparation in Illinois, made in 1914 and published in 1916,1 and an investigation of Illinois coal-washing methods, results of which were published in 1912 in a bulletin 2 that contained complete information on the methods then in use for sizing washed coal. OBJECTS OF THE INVESTIGATION The present investigation was limited to a study of screening as applied in preparing mineral products with the expectation of obtaining more comprehensive information on screening machinery.

In this paper, the effect of aluminum content on the formation mechanism, volume fraction, morphology and particle size distribution of graphite has been investigated. Addition of aluminum on ductile iron causes some fundamental changes in iron-carbon phase-diagram and as a result, improves the graphite formation during eutectic transformation. The results reveals that aluminum compounds have been formed in the core of graphite nodules, thus aluminum plays an important role in the formation of graphite nodules. Furthermore, it is indicated that an increase in the aluminum content also leads to an increase in the number of graphite nodules and a decrease in the nodules size.
