The past history of uranium production has been dominated by strip and shaft mining methods, but recently in-situ leaching has emerged as a viable alternative for uranium recovery. (1-8) Mobil was the first company to start in-situ uranium leaching in New Mexico. Mobil's Crownpoint project areas are in Mdinley County and are part of the Grants Mineral Belt. The major uranium deposits in this area occur in the Westwater Canyon Member of the Jurassic Morrison Formation. (9-11) The ore depth at the Crownpoint project is about 2000 ft. In an earlier paper we discussed the uranium mineralogy of an areally broad sampling of Crown- point ore. (12) The organic carbonaceous material often associated with the coffinite ore was characterized in some detail. The organic material appeared to be a very mature, coaly-type kerogen derived from plant components. This result was consistent with other studies on such carbonaceous material. (13-15)

"Cyanide heap leaching of gold ores in areas with extremely low winter temperatures requires special considerations to prevent freezing of the leach solution. Factors that impact the solution temperature include ore temperature at the time of stacking and during operation, burial of drip irrigation lines, use of geomembrane covers and heating of the leach solution. Thermodynamic modeling was performed to simulate expected ore and solution temperatures under different operating strategies for Kaminak Gold’s Coffee gold project in the Yukon Territory. Mean monthly temperatures at the site ranged from a low of -22.5 °C (-8.5 °F) to a high of 13.6 °C (56.4 °F), while in situ ore temperatures ranged from -0.5° to about -1.5 °C (31 ° to 29 °F). The modeling results were used to optimize the operational parameters and indicated that a combination of drip line burial and heating of the leach solution during the winter months was required to maintain solution temperatures above freezing during the initial years of stacking, although as the size of the heap increased, heating was no longer necessary.Modeling objectivesThe successful operation of a cyanide heap leach under extremely cold winter temperatures requires the implementation of operational strategies to prevent freezing of the leach solution and the ore within the heap. The Belle Eldridge Mine is an inactive lead-zinc mine in Spruce Gulch south of Deadwood, South Dakota. Acidic mine drainage (AMD) produced at the site drains into Spruce Creek, a tributary of Whitewood Creek. The site is on U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property. Extensive fieldwork was done at the Belle Eldridge Mine through the cooperation of the BLM and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. The site was extensively mapped to identify physical and environmental hazards such as tailings, waste rock, collapsed buildings, adits and workings. An exhaustive search of the historical records of the Belle Eldridge Mine was conducted. Maps of the under-ground workings of the Belle Eldridge dating from the 1930’s and 1940’s were found. The maps were used to correlate currently collapsed features to old adits and tunnels. Using hand corers and a portable drill rig, waste rock, tailings and soil core samples were collected and depth to bedrock was determined and the total volume of waste and tailings pile were determined. Related work examined the hydrology of the site. The site is very complex hydrogeologically. Numerous underground and surface workings and tunnels add to the complexity. Several seeps are located at the site, one of which is producing AMD. Recharge to the site was studied, and a 100-year flood plain map was produced.

"Considering the dominant role of fertilizers in global phosphate production, it is evident that with the ever increasing development in agriculture there will be a growing demand for phosphate beneficiation. With the rapid depletion of high quality reserves, investigations into more complex and lower grade ore bodies are required. The Minerals Processing Division at Mintek has been involved in process development and flowsheet design projects on phosphate resources since 2003. This paper will discuss the processes that Mintek has explored and employed to upgrade various phosphate ore bodies (>30% Phosphorous Pentoxide (P2O5)) in preparation for end user application. These are aimed at an improved understanding of ores in terms of their varying mineralogy and the development of appropriate process routes to meet product specification. OVERVIEW OF MINTEK Mintek is a state owned science council that undertakes R&D, consulting and sells products and services into the minerals beneficiation industry. Mintek has been in existence for 83 years with a current permanent staff complement of 750 of which 300 are professionals with a tertiary education. Being a non-profit organisation, the majority of funding comes from state grant and earmarked funding. All research is needs-driven exploring innovation through technology and process optimisation trends. Owing to a solid base of expertise, extensive laboratory and pilot facilities, and a historical database of knowledge, Mintek is well positioned and equipped to execute projects on a scoping, feasibility, prefeasibility and bankable level. USES OF PHOSPHATE Phosphate is the component in fertilizer essential for root and stem development in plants as well as rejuvenation of harshly depleted soil for which there is no agricultural substitute. Phosphate rock is essential for global food security with 87% used in the production of fertilizers. In agriculture as fertilizer, phosphate is one of the three primary plant nutrients in addition to nitrogen and potassium. In former times, it was simply crushed and used as is, but the crude form is now only used in organic farming. Normally it is chemically treated to make Single superphosphate (SSP), Triple superphosphate (TSP), or Mono-ammonium phosphates (MAP) and Di-ammonium phosphates (DAP), which has a higher concentration of phosphate and is more soluble, thus more suitable for plant absorption."

Since the promulgation of the first Federal Asbestos Standard by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in 1972, other federal agencies have modified the standard to better carry on their own unique missions. The instruments used to identify and measure asbestos, the sampling protocol, and the criteria used to define asbestos, have been modified to some degree. The Mine Safety and Health Administration regulates and controls asbestos dust in the mining and mineral commodity industries. However, crushed stone and processed ores contain mineral fragments that are frequently difficult to distinguish from asbestos. Mineral nomenclature, instruments for particle analysis, and sampling strategy must be accommodated to some degree to make asbestos control workable and meaningful. Precedent in other agencies has made consideration of these changes possible. Newly identified amphibole asbestos minerals have further complicated the agency?s regulatory charge. Changes in its Asbestos Standard are now being considered. Crushed taconite ore in the Eastern Mesabi highlights many of these issues. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. In order to find the behavior of dewatered unconsolidated strata during the process of injecting water through a borehole, a new type of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing system was successfully used for the real-time strain monitoring of unconsolidated strata during a water injection process for a dewatered unconsolidated strata of a coal mine. The unconsolidated strata water injection test was implemented through a borehole at a depth of +115.83 to +135.15m. The employed FBG strain monitoring system and ground water level observation system were installed at the depth in the unconsolidated strata where the water injection was conducted through two different boreholes. The water injection pressures in the test were 0.1, 0.2, 0.3MPa respectively, and the total water injection volume was 4226.84m3. The relationships between the water injection pressures, water injection volume and the strain change of the unconsolidated strata, the stress and strain conditions of the unconsolidated strata before and after water injection, were analyzed. This paper presents the results of these tests, and shows that the dewatering compression of the unconsolidated strata is reduced with increasing water injection pressures and water injection volumes. Comparing the stress-strain conditions before and after water injection, it is found that the stress of the water injection strata is in tension, which confirms the theory that the settlement of the thick unconsolidated strata is directly caused by the reduction of ground water levels. The high sensitivity and stability of the FBG monitoring system used was able to realize the real-time strain monitoring of the water injection process within a deep unconsolidated strata. This FBG monitoring system and the test results presented are very important for understanding further treatment of settlement in unconsolidated strata.

The commercial extraction of metals from manganese nodules on an industrial scale requires more than 50% of the investment necessary to realize manganese nodule mining. This is mainly due to the fact that a completely new metallurgical processing scheme for the extraction of both base metals (Ni, Cu, Co) and high-tech metals (Mo, Li, Ga) has to be developed and upgraded to industrial scale. There are a number of conventional processing technologies that combine hydro- and pyro-metallurgical approaches such as the INCO and CUPRION processes which have been developed in the 1970s and 1980s. Today, new approaches based on selective leaching with chelating agents and bioleaching try to minimize energy consumption and waste production. All of these extraction methods require knowledge how the metals are structurally bound in the manganese oxides. In this contribution we will review the current knowledge about the mineralogy of iron and manganese minerals in the different marine oxide deposits, present our results, and discuss the possible consequences for metal extraction.

This study compared particle size distribution and density distribution of crushed products for waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) before and after heat treatment. The crushing process for heat-treated WPCBs is a selective crushing process; more metal is concentrated in the coarse particle range of 1.0–0.5 mm and high density range of 2.8–2.96 g/cm3. WPCBs were separated using the Falcon separator to recycle useful metals. The Box-Behnken module of Design-Expert was used to obtain optimal separation parameters, namely, rotational frequency of 25 Hz, recoil water pressure of 0.025 Mpa and feed speed of 34 ml/s. On this basis, the separation indexes for WPCBs with and without heat treatment were compared. Experimental results show that the recovery effect is better for heat-treatedWPCBs than for thosewithout heat treatment. Comparedwith the non-heattreatedWPCBs, the product grade of heat-treated WPCBs is 1.95% higher, and its recovery is improved by about 14%. Finally, characteristics ofWPCBs before and after heat treatment were analyzed on the basis of stress experiments and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Results of mechanical characterization indicate that the stress experiment for non-heat-treated WPCBs has a maximumpressure load of 212 N and displacement of 20mm, but heat-treatedWPCBs only need 140 N stress and 14 mm displacement. SEM shows that copper foil and fiberglass cloth are deformed in different directions and sizes after heat treatment to form gaps, which promote liberation of copper foil and fiberglass cloth.

An increase in the importance of low-grade materials as sources of gold and silver has led to the need for improved analytical methods on leach solutions, ores and various effluents, residues, and in-process streams. These are required by plant operators as guides to process control and for accounting pldrposes. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) and AAS preceded by pre- concentration have been applied successfully to resolve many such problems. However, AAS is no panacea and imprecision or loss of accuracy can result if adequate precautions are not taken to prevent losses and eliminate interferences. The recent methods are discussed together with methods for overcoming difficulties. Comparisons with more classical analytical techniques are also given.

INTRODUCTION The wet shotcreting system utilizing steelfiber microsilica shotcrete with remote controlled equipment (The Robocon System) was developed in Norway 7-8 years ago. Norway was the natural origin for this system due to several factors. Almost 30% of all underground hydro-power stations in the world are located here. These projects created a need for high productivity shotcreting rigs for the rock support work in the caverns and in the connecting tunnels. During the period of 1976-1980, more than 1000 miles of tunnels were completed in Norway. Secondly, the utilization of microsilica in concrete was also developed in Norway due to a concentration of the world's ferroalloy p ants there. Robocon has presently placed approximately 110,000 m (150,000 cu. yds.) of this superior shotcrete, and has consequently an extensive experience in the shotcreting method. During a relatively short period of time (1975-1980), Robocon had a change from hand-operated, dry-process shotcrete to remote-controlled, wet-process shotcreting, because of improved productivity, reduced rebound, safer and cleaner working conditions. The introduction of microsilica and water-reducing admixture made it possible to produce wet-process shotcrete of high strength.

The San Vicente to 2nd Aqueduct Pipeline?Tunnel project is a raw water conveyance tunnel linking the San Vicente Reservoir (SVR) to the 2nd Aqueduct Pipeline via Rancho Penasquitos Pressure Control Facility (RPPCF). This 58,230 lf long tunnel will be 8.5? final ID, and has four points of construction access. The job is classified into 6 Reaches of tunnel, identified by the dominant geology within the reach. This paper will focus on Reach 3, specifically the measures necessary to drill and blast a 550 lineal foot section of granitic rock tunnel immediately in front of an open face digger shield.

Large heap leach operations around the world contain significant under-leached metal values that present recovery challenges to operators. The first challenge is to find the location of the highest inventory. High resolution resistivity ? has proven sensitive enough to detect such zones in the interior of heap leach pads to target treatment or re-leaching. Newmont Mining Corp. has adapted the high pressure fracturing technology, used in oil wells to stimulate select zones in heap leach pads to add reagents in 3-D for re-leaching, changing zonal chemistry for improved recovery and heap closure. High Resolution Resistivity ? is able to subsequently monitor injected solution flow and determine directional permeability during Hydro-Jex stimulation. The combination of these technologies has shown strong economic success, for selecting targets in the heaps and monitoring solution application. These technologies are now available to the mining industry for adoption.

The project now under construction will comprise a 1.2 km long raw water aqueduct, a major new 0.25million cubic metres per day water treatment works (with space for upgrading to 1.2Mm³/d), a 12.1 km long treated water aqueduct and a primary service reservoir. The mining sector, which has an important place in terms of raw material and energy supply, is referred as a sector with one of the highest fatal accidents in comparison with other sectors. In this century, where occupational health and safety awareness has increased, it is important to review the past accident statistics and to determine the current deficiencies by using the information in the inventory. In this study, the Malmquist total factor productivity index (MPI) has been utilized to investigate the changes in the work accidents occurring in the Western Lignite Corporation (Turkey), where underground and surface production methods are applied, and to determine the measures to be taken. According to the results obtained, both the decrease in production amount and the increase in the number of accidents caused inefficiencies during the period in concern due to the expected 10-year economic life of the mechanized system operating in the underground production panel that came to an end in 2007 and the flooding took place in early 2017. Compared with the underground operations, it has been determined that production can be carried out at the appropriate scale despite the heavy working conditions encountered due to the changing climatic conditions and the progress of production in the surface operations.

Magnetic liners can improve the performance of ball mills by increasing grinding efficiency, extending service life, and reducing maintenance costs. Despite their importance, the fundamental understanding and the quantitative investigation on the effects of the magnetic liners has not been addressed in the literature. This paper addresses this gap by studying charge motion, and how the use of a magnetic liner affects the breakage mechanism of the mill, using discrete element method (DEM) modeling and the Hertz-Mindlin contact model with relative velocity dependent (RVD) rolling friction. Charge motion was modeled under different mill speeds. Compared to conventional steel and rubber liners, the charge motion in the magnetic liner mill was predominantly cascading. Quantitative analysis of the energy dissipation within the mill was conducted to investigate mill breakage. Regardless of speed, over 50% of the total energy dissipation in the magnetic liner mill was in the form of abrasion and attrition. The results highlighted the appeal of magnetic liners in secondary and regrinding application, where abrasion and attrition are considered more efficient in the fine material breakage, and where impact is ideally minimized to reduce mill wear. A number of experiments were conducted to assess the effect of different model parameters on the performance of the magnetic liner mill. The highest abrasion/attrition intensity was observed with high values of the model parameters namely the restitution coefficient, static friction coefficient, and rolling friction coefficient.

The demand for natural gas continues to increase at higher than anticipated rates, partly because of its widening price advantage over most other fossil fuels when the cost of air pollution control is included. However, there are clear indications that natural gas supply from the contiguous 48 states and continental shelves will not indefinitely keep up with this rapid growth in demand. Projections are presented which define the extent of potential deficiencies from the 1970's to the year 2000. Among the sources of supplemental gas - imported pipeline natural gas from Canada and Mexico, tanker import of liquefied natural gas, and synthetic pipeline gas from coal and oil shale - by far the most abundant at potentially competitive costs is pipeline gas from coal. The state of development and relative economics of the various coal gasification processes are reviewed. It is shown that synthetic pipeline gas could become a very substantial market for bituminous coal and lignite at current minemouth prices - 60-70 million' tons of coal for each trillion cubic feet of synthetic pipeline gas produced. This corresponds to only slightly more than the current annual increase is gas demand.

Until not so long ago most ring geared mills were operated with fix speed motors only. By using the latest generation of medium voltage frequency converters, new possibilities have arisen to improve the grinding process. Beside all the direct and indirect advantages, several dedicated functions have now been implemented for ring geared grinding mills in the minerals industry. The sophisticated operational functions ensure a smooth, safe and reliable operation with minimum stress for the mechanical equipment and therefore utmost availability of the mill. Several papers have already been presented concerning the benefits of using this state of the art technology for mill drives. Now this paper is focusing on the experiences gained with this kind of sophisticated ring geared mill drive system rather than only show and explains the operational benefit of the different functions. Several measurements of different operating conditions, starting, frozen charge remover, controlled roll back, backlash, etc., made on an installed and commissioned 2 x 5 MW dual pinion ring geared mill drive system will be shown and discussed. The accuracy of the load sharing between the two 5 MW motors during starting, normal operation and stopping will be demonstrated using real measurements from an operating system. Finally the inherent features of these drive systems are briefly discussed.
