Construction of Ontario Power Generation?s 12.8-m diameter, 10.4-km long water diversion tunnel in Niagara Falls, Ontario, is underway. The tunnel is being excavated by means of a 14.44-m diameter open gripper Tunnel Boring Machine. The tunnel lining is constructed as a two-pass system with the initial lining consisting of rock bolts, mesh, steel channels or ribs, and shotcrete, and the final lining consisting of pre-stressed cast-in-place concrete with a waterproof membrane. An analytical procedure is presented for evaluating the stresses in linings of bored tunnels caused by kinematic soil-lining interaction. Three cases of interaction as produced by the following conditions are treated: (1) relaxation of in situ soil stresses near a lining following its installation; (2) overburden pressure at the soil surface; and (3) free-field soil response resulting from an earthquake. Non-dimensional formulas and graphs resulting from parametric studies are presented for practical tunnel design applications. The procedure is applied separately to a steel lining and a concrete lining for a site located at the lower end of Market Street in San Francisco through which a BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit)tunnel passes.

Ceveland-Cliffs uses a specialized software package in mine planning at the Empire Mine, an iron ore mine it manages on Michigan’s Marquette Iron Range. The application puts together years of mining experience that began in the early 1960s on the eastern end of the Marquette Range. The Empire Mine is in its 38th year of production. It uses the software to model a complex and highly variable low-grade magnetite ore body, capturing the economics of mining and processing to the final product. With special attention given to geostatistical methods, the software is used for all geologic modeling, ore reserve estimation, ore control, pit design and short- and long-range planning.

The two main characters, a cop named Raylan and a criminal named Boyd, are adversarial to the very end, yet they manage to maintain a seemingly inexplicable bond of friendship through it all. The final episode ends (spoiler alert) with Boyd asking Raylan why that is. He responds, “If I allow myself to be sentimental, there is one thing I wander back to” Boyd responds, “We dug coal together.” Fade to black.What creates these types of bonds between friends and co-workers in mining? I don’t know about you, but many of my best friends I met in mining. Certainly the people I respect the most in this world are a part of our industry. Good, honest, honorable men and women. And I am not just talking about the leaders of our industry. I am talking about great miners who taught me how to do the right thing and also be productive.I have had the pleasure to work for some great people and the misfortune of working for some of the loudest screamers. What I consider the worst butt-chewing in my life may surprise you. I once worked for a man I respected, because he showed me respect. He went on a business trip and left some instructions. For some reason, I was able to justify to myself that they applied to everybody but me, and I disobeyed them. When he returned he called me into his office and said to me: “Tim, you pissed me off when you did that.” He said it quietly and with no anger. I had lost his respect. This devastated me more than any screaming shift boss ever could have. I learned a lot about values from that conversation.Most of us will spend more time at work than we will with our families over a lifetime. It is natural that tight bonds be created at work. What I believe makes mining special is that these bonds are so strong. They are strengthened by the incredibly hard work our miners do. They work at all hours, on holidays and in all sorts of extreme weather conditions. The physical demands of the job are sometimes exhausting. Our bonds are further reinforced because the work is dangerous. Not only does management watch out for the wellbeing of their people, but each and every one of us looks out for one another. The bonds are made tight because our people are so passionate about what they do, no matter the department or profession. Finally, they are strong because of the thousands in the industry that keep doing the right thing, every day. We make great friends in this industry because of the strength of character of our people. That is why Boyd and Raylan respected one another so much."

Along with increased production from longwall units has come the likelihood of increased worker noise exposures. In recent years, equipment has become larger, more powerful, and noisier than its predecessors. For these reasons, the Mining Division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is investigating worker noise exposure on longwall faces and researching possible solutions to reduce this exposure. Part of this research effort involves studying the effect of covering the underside of longwall shields with acoustical material to reduce reverberating noise along the face. Experiments using acoustical absorptive insulation to cover the undersides of the shields, shearer body, and the shield supports were conducted at the full scale simulated long-wall test facility located at the Pittsburgh Research Center. Sound levels were recorded every 1.5 m [5 fl] along a 15.2 m [50 ft] section of the simulated face for all of the conditions tested. The analysis of the data indicated that a 2.0-3.0 dBA noise reduction was achieved between the shearer drums and a 4.0-5.5 MA attenuation was attained upwind of the headgate drum.

Introduction In October of 1961 Texas Gulf Sulphur Company contacted the Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory, of the North Carolina State University, and requested assistance in the development of a phosphate ore body in Beaufort County. The main: objectives of the work at Asheville were defined as follows. The Laboratory should try to determine on the basis of drill core samples, submitted by Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, the highest grade of phosphate concentrate that could be obtained with high recoveries from North Carolina ore, the thickness of the ore body that could be treated economically in one section, and the quantity of concentrate that could be obtained per acre. The results should be compared with data obtained from the treatment of Florida ores. It was important to use mineral preparation methods during the initial laboratory work that could be verified later by continuous pilot plant operation and could be scaled-up for a commercial plant. The writer was in charge of the project at the Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory and participated in the development of one of North Carolina's greatest mineral resources from the first drill core examination to the production of the first poundage and tonnage quantities of flotation concentrates. The Lee Creek phosphate mine and mill was put in operation in early 1966 and can produce three million tons of phosphate concentrate a year. Sulfuric- acid, and phosphoric acid plant, diamonium phosphate plant and triple super phosphate plants came on stream in 1967; at that time they were the world's largest. Parts I and II in this series of papers presented the chemistry of medium-temperature pressure leaching of copper sulfide concentrates and reviewed the metallurgical development of a process to effectively recover copper using medium-temperature pressure leaching and direct electrowinning (DEW). Part III reviewed the large-scale demonstration of the MT-DEW-SX process at Bagdad, Arizona. Key features of the process were the use of superfine grinding of the concentrate (to a P98 of 12 to 15 µm and a P80 of 6 to 7 µm), pressure leaching at 160ºC with 1,380 kPa (200 psig) oxygen overpressure, DEW to produce LME Grade A cathode, recycling some of the lean electrolyte to the pressure leaching step, and treatment of a lean electrolyte bleed by solution extraction (SX). Recycling of lean electrolyte provided all of the acid required to effectively dissolve copper and convert approximately 65% to 70% of the sulfide sulfur to elemental sulfur, resulting in an acid-autogenous process for pressure leaching. It is particularly challenging for the mining industry to create and implement an efficient and adaptable mining innovation model to secure the continuous improvement of processes and products via technology. Human resource departments must play a vital role in shifting the mining culture, enabling these new classes of digitally skilled professionals to manage the mining operations of the future. This paper proposes the implementation of a concept based on the 5S mining innovation model ((a) Nieto, 2019), in a coal mining project in Central Asia, Mongolia. Practical and empirical evidence suggests that the model could serve as a roadmap to developing technologies and methods for the mines of the future.

The borate deposits of Death Valley, first exploited in 1882, were a major world source of boron-bearing products until shortly after very large deposits near Boron, California (Kramer) came on stream in 1926. Borate mining in Death Valley then became moribund, with most extant deposits held as reserves backing Kramer. Tenneco began borate operations following acquisition of claims in 1967 and is the only active borate producer inside Death Valley National Mon¬ument. Borate ores, confined to the lower Furnace Creek Formation (early to middle Pliocene), initially precipitated in a shallow lake fed by boron-rich volcanic hot springs associated with the Basin and Range province. Later diagenesis and remobilization plus regional folding, faulting, and erosion altered and complicated originally simple borate mineralogy and distribution. Dominant ore minerals are ulexite (NaCaB509.8H20), probertite (NaCaB509.5H20), and colemanite (Ca2B6011.5H20). Tenneco currently operates two open pits near Ryan, California. Mining is by bulldozer-pushed scrapers hauling waste and front-end loader/off-highway truck combinations for ore and waste haulage. Archeological, environmental, and aesthetic considerations influence both mine plans. Boraxo Pit, opened in 1970, has deep ore (stripping ratio 10 to 13:1) which occurs along a fault and as beds in shale on the hanging wall. Problems include pit wall instability (adverse bedding), non¬ripable calcareous shale (11,000 fps), and mixed ore separation. Sigma Pit, opened in 1975, has shallow (stripping ratio 1 to 1). low dipping, bedded ore in shale. Massive ulexite and "granular" un- cohesive colemanite present problems in mining and milling. Colemanite is crushed to -6 inches, washed, dried at 350°F, then calcined at 800°F with 100 tpd capacity. Crushed (-6 inch) ulexite or probertite is Raymond milled to customer specifications with a capacity of 1000 tpd.

Occupying a refuge alternative (RA) is an accepted practice in mine fires and explosions when escape is not feasible. MSHA has promulgated a final rule on refuge alternatives that includes a recognition that thermal environment is an important consideration. To this end, an environmental index was specified. The question remains about how to test a refuge shelter to demonstrate that it meets the final rule. The analysis followed five activities: A. Provide an estimate of heat generated by an individual refuge alternative occupant; B. Evaluate the Steadman Apparent Temperature criterion of 95°F; C. Discuss simulations based on body temperature or skin temperature limits; D. Suggest method of simulating human heat generation during refuge occupancy; and E. Suggest alternative methodologies/criteria for evaluating heat and humidity survivability inside a refuge alternative.

The identification of the major subsidence areas in the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field has been made to distinguish the subsidence phenomena on the basis of geographical location. Further, this identification process is based upon selected critical geological, topographical, and mining features in the coal fields. The proposed identification of the regions is derived from a comparison of the subsidence potential in a particular area. The most likely severe subsidence areas are compared to those with the probable low subsidence severity. The combination of certain geological and mining parameters involved allows for the derivation of a classification of the subsidence potential.

This manuscript aimed to examine the impact of operating parameters on the wet grinding of talc in a vertical-type stirred media mill. Within the scope of the research, the effects of operating parameters including media filling ratio, solid mass fraction, grinding media size, and grinding time were studied. The findings were assessed based on the product particle size (d50, d10), surface area (Sw), and energy consumption (Em). As a result of the present research, the following optimum grinding test conditions were determined: 65% media filling ratio, 40% solid mass fraction, 1 mm grinding media size, and 120 min grinding time. After determining the optimum grinding conditions, the Box–Behnken statistical design was used to determine the effect of parameter interactions on the d50 size. The media filling ratio was found to significantly affect the decrease in d50 compared to the other two parameters. Furthermore, the minimum d50 size was also achieved under optimum grinding conditions.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted investigations on extracting phosphate values from wastes generated during the mining and beneficiation of phosphate matrix. These wastes may contain up to one third of the phosphate originally present in untreated ore. Samples of wastes were air-dried and leached using 93 pct sulfuric acid in the presence of methanol. Evidence for the formation of a calcium sulfate hemihydrate coating that hinders complete dissolution of phosphate is presented. Solid-liquid separations were enhanced when flocculation was effected using poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in conjunction with hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) or hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC. A conceptual flowsheet for a proposed process using an acid-alcohol leaching technique is presented.

Our aging infrastructure includes numerous tunnels that provide easy access through topographic and societal obstacles. These tunnels are renewable resources that require periodic maintenance and rehabilitation to extend their useful lifespan to hundreds or even thousands of years. However, as with any structural rehabilitation project, tunnel liner rehabilitation requires an inordinate amount of evaluation and care due often poorly documented original construction and subsequent repair construction methods and materials. This paper documents the investigation, planning, design, and construction efforts of the rehabilitation of a 74-year old, 216-meter (713 foot) long two-lane highway tunnel in moderately fractured to highly sheared basalt on the Oregon coast. The tunnel consists of four sections lined originally with timber and subsequently overlaid with concrete, and three unlined sections.

Perhaps this is the first time that an analysis of the industrial minerals panorama has been made in Mexico for that type of commodities. Because the non-metallic minerals lack the glamour of the metallic minerals and are usually of less unit value than metallics, a comparative study of these commodities has seldom been attempted. Sulphur, fluorite, barite and few others are an exception. Consequently, the statistics on the lowest per unit value industrial minerals, such as limestone, dolomite, gravels, sands, etc., are usually scarce and not always accurate. The following, then, will be an attempt to show a general status of the industrial minerals in Mexico with due reservations regarding volumes and values. According to Kruger (1971), this group of minerals surprisingly very little known, and called non-metallics because the lack of metallic luster, is the largest group of the mineral kingdom. It constitutes perhaps 75% of all the mineral varieties. For the most part, these minerals are compounds of common acids, sulphides, hydroxides and two elements carbon and sulphur. The list of non-metallic minerals is therefore very long. It includes the borates, carbonates, chlorides, fluorides, nitrates, phosphates, silicates, sulphates and less commonly arsenates, chromates, molybdates, sulphides, tungstates and vanadates. The latter group and many of the oxides are sought usually for their metal content.

In Huoqiu region of Anhui Province, Fe2O3 occurs mainly in the form of specularite. Besides quartz, the gangue minerals include iron-bearing silicates such as chlorite and sericite which account for about 10% of the total gangue. The separation effect of conventional collectors is poor in the flotation of the minerals, that is, the average grade of iron concentrates is only 60-62%. Using the developed amphoteric collector can successfully realize not only the separation of specularite from various gangue minerals with results of iron concentrate grade above 65% and iron recovery of above 80% but also low temperature flotation at 15°C.

"The Vanuatu island arc and its adjacent back-arc basins form part of the southern New Hebrides subduction system in the southwestern Pacific Ocean within a triangle defined by the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Fiji (Meffre & Crawford 2001). The back-arc region east of the volcanic front is characterized by three structural depressions namely Vate, Erromango, and Futuna (from N to S), also known as the Coriolis Troughs. Earlier studies of lava compositions reveal the occurrence of highly evolved alkali-rich dacites as well as ankaramite basalts within the individual troughs (McConachy et al. 2005).Here we present the first mineralogical and geochemical analyses of hydrothermal fluids and precipitates (sulfides, sulfates, Fe-oxyhydroxides), sediments, and volcanic rocks, sampled during the "Coriolis Volcanism and Vents" (COVOLVE) cruise SO229 in July 2013 aboard the German R/V Sonne. The samples were retrieved during several ROV Kiel 6000 dives directly from the newly discovered active vent sites at the neovolcanic Nifonea Ridge, and from multiple sites at water depths ranging between 200 to 2800 m within the Vate and Futuna Troughs as well as from the shallow water Epi Caldera NNE of the Coriolis Troughs (Fig. 1)."

In order to ensure safe mining and reduce surface damage in shallow multiple-seam mining, the failure characteristics of interburden strata with different coal pillar offset distances between pillars in the upper and lower seams, the distribution characteristics of stress concentration in coal pillars, and the development characteristics of stratum cracks and subsidence were physically investigated and also using UDEC2D software. Meanwhile, the effect of different coal pillar offset distances on the stress concentration of coal pillars and development of stratum cracks were studied. Based on those results, a formula for safe mining and reducing surface damage was established, which provided a theoretical basis for safe and environmentally friendly mining in shallow multi-seams. According to the results of the study, the optimal coal pillar offset distance (the side-to-side horizontal distance of the upper and lower coal pillars) between the upper and lower coal seams was developed to reduce the stress concentration of coal pillars and surface damage. The results of this study have been applied in Ningtiaota coal mine and have achieved good results in safe and environmentally friendly mining.

Masbate Gold Mines, dormant since WWI I, are now back in operation. The ore treatment plant incorporates carbon-in-pulp processing, utilized because of the ready availability of coconut shell charcoal in the Philippines and the high clay content of the ore. A detailed description of the plant, including the surprisingly fast and efficient alcohol stripping facility is presented. Operating data for the plant is provided together with an interesting performance evaluation of mechanical versus air- lift agitated leach tanks.
