Like so many installations of its type approaching middle age, the ore processing and shipping facilities in Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, have taken a lot of twists and turns in their lifetime. The object of this paper is to lead you through these twists and turns and some of the reasoning for them. The need for additional sources of iron are in the United States became evident during the time of the second world war. An exploration team from U. S. Steel located further high quality direct shipping iron are in commercial quantities near Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela in 1947. Basic decisions were made to develop these reserves for export via the Orinoco River through a new shipping port to be built at the confluence of the Orinoco and Caroni Rivers. The basic concept was for the ore to be loaded directly to ocean going vessels. This was something of a gamble since the basic economics depended upon successfully opening up the main channel of the Orinoco River to deepwater vessels, and the Bethlehem Steel mine in the same area was already working with shallow draft river boats and a transfer station on the coast. Always, the basic philosophy has tended to be to plan with expansion in mind. The original conveyor systems were 1.52 m (60 inches) wide with 200 idlers, whereas 1.07 m (42 inches) or 1.22 m (48 inches) wide conveyors could have carried any production foreseen at the time of installation. Stockpiles have been located and designed with room for expansion. Basic designs have had dotted line future expansion blocked in.

This paper reviews a study conducted for Australian Coal Research Limited (ACARP) to assist Anglo-American operations with better understanding of coal burst mechanics and control based on U.S. practical experience, investigations, and inspections in three major U.S. coalfields over the past 45 years. The study examined both nonviolent and burst-prone case studies to identify contributing risk factors and addressed failure mechanisms for major U.S. coalfields in Utah, Colorado, and Kentucky, which have diverse characteristics. To investigate the mechanics of coal burst, a multipronged approach is used. First, field measurements in three mines from East Mountain, Utah, are complemented with finite-difference stress analyses to address the importance of horizontal stress in coal pillar mechanics of violent failure. Second, the computational procedures for estimating seismicity resulting from slip along geological discontinuities are reviewed, as these measurements point to seismicity being the trigger mechanism for violent failure of marginally stable structures. This joint-slip seismicity mechanism is in agreement with the more recentimproved re-examination of mining-induced seismicity (MIS) data from the Crandall Canyon Mine, Utah by University of Utah (UOU). Third, a hybrid statistical-analytical methodology is applied for identifying significant factors affecting coal burst. It utilizes data from 30 case studies including those from Utah, Colorado, Kentucky, and other eastern U.S. mines. The statistical approach reinforces field measurements and points to strata rigidity, joint spacings, and horizontal stress field as significant factors affecting damage resulting from coal bursts. This provides practical capabilities for identifying operations of higher risk using a rigidity-cavability variable. Overall, the study provides valuable insights into the mechanics and risk factors associated with coal bursts in major U.S. coalfields. By utilizing a multipronged approach that incorporates both field measurements and statistical-analytical calculations, the study offers practical capabilities for identifying operations of higher risk and improving coal burst control.

The disaster at the Upper Big Branch (UBB) mine 2010 has demonstrated the destructive violence of a coal dust explosion by killing 29 miners in the worst mining accident the United States has experienced in almost 40 years. This explosion brought to light that the United States mining industry must strengthen explosion prevention and explosion hazard detection practices. Recent legislation such as the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) pushed the strengthening of explosion and disaster response and miner protection in addition to stricter regulations on the sealing of abandoned areas and on conveyor belt flame resistance. The focus of this new act was on how to respond to a disaster or explosion, yet not much improvement was made with respect to prevention explosion disasters. Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have recently concluded extensive research into methane and coal dust explosion prevention practices and regulations as it may be applicable to underground mines in the United States. This research aims to forward more studies into the use and adoption of standards and procedures that have been utilized in countries with strong explosion prevention histories.

Fine coal refuse is often pumped, as slurry, into surface impoundments as a means of permanent disposal. As the available volume is filled, the height of the embankments are frequently increased. Many times the additional embankment material is placed upon consolidated fine coal refuse. There has been some concern about the long-term effect of consolidation of this material at or above the liquid limit upon its shear strength. A laboratory investigation was performed using three different types of fine coal sluny taken from Central Appalachian coal preparation plants. The refuse was consolidated in 10-foot plexiglass columns under incremental amounts of surcharge loading. The incremental loads were designed to simulate the effect of increasing the height of a refuse embankment on top of the consolidating coal slurry. After the refuse in the columns had consolidated for several months, the columns were cut apart and triaxial tests were performed on both the consolidated material and unconsolidated material for comparison of their shear strength parameters.

Fault-slip bursts induced by mining activities can result in severe damage to nearby mine development. In general, engineers designing rock support in burst-prone mines not only need to consider stress redistribution resulting from excavation, but also dynamic loading that results from seismic waves generated by large mininginduced fault-slip events. In this study, we simulated dynamic waves in sedimentary rock from a blasting source and from a mining-induced-seismicity source using a Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) model with discrete fracture networks (DFNs). Our purpose was to investigate the stability of openings and the adequacy of existing support systems at an underground limestone mine in South Korea. A baseline model with only static loading was also simulated, which verified observed stability under such conditions. The results indicate that the current support system of shotcrete lining is likely to work well under dynamic loading caused by blasting. However, when the dynamic source was a far-field fault-slip event, the dynamic loading exceeded the support capacity of the shotcrete lining. Thus, if a mine is operating in ground with an elevated risk of mininginduced fault slip, mine engineers should consider seismic wave propagation and ground motion distribution from a remote, mining-induced fault-slip event to determine a suitable support design.

The domestic cement industry demands about 550 trillion Btu annually, at a time when reduced fuel use has become a necessity due to the energy shortage. In terms of the overall power picture, that 550 trillion Btu, which includes both fossil and electrical energy, means about 0. 870 of all energy consumed in the U. S. The various factors influencing reduction of this energy consumption are the subject of this paper. Nationally, the energy shortage is being tackled on two fronts--increasing supply and reducing demand. Making cement consumes energy; therefore, the industry cannot join the effort to increase the energy supply except indirectly as noted later. Demand can also be attacked on two fronts--by reducing cement consumption or by reducing the amount of energy required to make cement. The following discussions on reducing cement industry energy consumption center briefly on the prospect of reducing cement consumption followed by a broad evaluation of the potentials for improving cement-making thermal efficiency.

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc. (FMI) will soon begin copper production from the Dos Pobres and San Juan deposits near Safford, Arizona. Ore reserves total 615 M tons grading 0.36% copper, predominantly as chrysocolla. Copper extraction will be by leaching with sulfuric acid. Fluor Canada Ltd. provided EPCM services to design an ore handling and conventional SWEW facility capable of producing a nominal 240 million pounds per year of cathode copper. The ore handling facility will process 114,000 tons per day of ore through three-stage, open-circuit crushing followed by agglomeration and product placement on the permanent leach pad. Stacking of ore on the leach pad will utilize Terra Nova Technologies' "Super Portable" mobile stacking system. The stacking system fleet consists of 13 self- propelled, crawler-mounted mobile conveyor units, each with 72-inch-wide belting and a capacity of 6,800 tons per hour, including ten 250-foot-long portable conveyors, a horizontal feed conveyor, a 285-foot-long horizontal conveyor and a 220-foot-long radial stacker. PROJECT BACKGROUND Project History The Safford Leach Project is located in the Safford mining district in Graham County, Arizona, approximately eight miles northeast of the town of Safford and 170 miles east of Phoenix. The 3,360-acre property is located in the Gila River Valley, immediately south of the Gila Mountains, at elevations between approximately 3,000 and 5,400 feet above sea level. The Safford Leach Project is comprised of the Dos Pobres and San Juan deposits, two of five known copper ore deposits in the Safford mining district.

"The development of a multiple level underground mine is a complex task in which geology, engineering, ground control, and unit operations are integrated into a single mine design. The components are inter-dependent and must function cohesively to ensure a profitable underground mining operation. To optimize reserve recovery, mine planning should begin from the lowest level and progress up. This limits any misjudgments or oversights of a given level affecting the underlying levels and ensures the ability to maximize recovery from each level.Mine planning should start with the exploration and characterization of the geologic setting. Once the reserve geology and quality is well understood, then mine planning can begin with respect to the following:,Orientation of mine works with respect to horizontal stress,,Access to the reserve,,Determination of opening widths,,Selection of back, floor horizons and pillar centers,,Selection of development and secondary mining heights,,Appropriate interburden thicknesses, and,Examine the stability of the multiple level mine through numer¬ical modeling.The multiple level mine design process and decisions are presented through a case history example. The theme is that there is one opportunity to “get it right” as well as many chances to overlook a small aspect within the design that will plague the mine throughout all levels and through the entirety of its operating life.INTRODUCTIONAs surface quarries reach their economic stripping limit and encroach on mineral and/or reserve boundaries, they approach the end of surface mineable reserves. Furthermore, modern urban sprawl has placed previously remote surface quarries within suburban development and neighborhoods, leading to significant increases in noise, dust, and vibration grievances by the community and regulators (Newman, 2017). Many mining operations have begun year-round production of underground reserves to meet growing market demands. This does not permit the typical sequence of stripping overburden in the winter to provide limestone to mine during the construction season. Underground stone mining operations in the United States commonly utilize a room-and-pillar mine layout with drill-and-blast production methodology for the development of the reserve. Within the Midwest and Eastern regions, thick and flat-lying limestone formations lend themselves to the utilization of multiple level mining layouts. While a multiple level mine plan will increase the overall recovery of the reserve, greater overburden depths, multiple level geometry, and the presence of discontinuities all require an emphasis on ground control for the planning and development of a safe and productive multiple level underground stone operation."

"Wear resistant 25% Cr hard cast iron is a heterogeneous material containing 1,600 HV hard chromium carbides embedded into martensitic matrix. It is the most used cast alloy in wear operations of mining industry, chemical industry, fracking, etc. During the last decade the hard iron manufacturers increased wear resistance in the following ways: • Reduce / eliminate harmful retained austenite and chromium + carbon depleted areas especially within eutectic carbide cells. In Max5A the improved 25% Cr alloy brittle carbide eutectic cells are removed which increases toughness. • Delay delamination between chromium carbides and matrix particularly during sliding abrasion wear. Delamination commences at the weakest chromium carbide – matrix contact lines exposing chromium carbide to localized bending stresses which gradually chip carbides away. Once the chromium carbide base is removed accelerated wear degradation occurs. • Evenly randomize and avoid discontinuities in the chromium carbide network. When chromium carbides are perpendicularly positioned to the wear surface wear rate is minimized. On the contrary the highest wear rate takes place when 3D oriented chromium carbides are parallel with the wear surface. In this case chromium carbides cover top network discontinuities being just matrix supported which leads to rapid carbide cracking. The new hard iron discussed in this paper fulfils and exceeds the above requirements increasing the casting service life around 250% in various wear operations. Physical and mechanical properties of Max5A are compared with well manufactured Industry Standard 25% Cr hard iron. The paper presents practical accomplishments obtained in the USA, South America and India. INTRODUCTION The chemical composition of Max5A and Industry Standard 25% Cr are identical like specified by ASTM A532 Class III Type A requesting C = 2.0-3.3% and Cr = 23.0-30.0%. Manganese, silicon, nickel, molybdenum and copper contents are limited by maximum accepted quantities.[1] According to published data the eutectic chromium carbides chemical composition of 25% Cr hard iron is Cr = 54% and C = 8% which indicates strong depletion of chromium and carbon along chromium carbide - matrix interfaces. [2] The optimized Max5A microstructure has minimized retained austenite, is devoid of harmful carbide eutectic cells and has the most advantageous chromium carbide and secondary chromium carbide morphology. This favorable microstructure increases wear resistance, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The paper compares the Max5A microscopic features and mechanical – physical properties with similar properties of high quality Industry Standard 25% Cr."

Grinding mills, both autogenous and ball can be powered by several basic means. The three methods used today are girth gear drives, gearless drives and trunnion coupled reducers. This paper will focus on the first of these methods -girth gear drives. The girth gear drive has been used on thousands of mills which continue to operate successfully. These drives are noted for their simplicity and low cost. In the past, the horsepower capacity of girth gears has been slow to keep up with the horsepower increase required by the mill builders, particularly since the advent of the SAG mill. Gear manufacturers had capacity for 2000 HP mills in the 1950's, 5000 HP in the 1960's and 6500 horsepower in the 1970's. The 70's and 80's brought dual pinion girth gear drives which allowed mill sizes beyond 10,000 horsepower. Gear manufactures who could not keep up with the pace of the horsepower demands and the quality and reliability demanded by the mill builders and users have fallen by the wayside.

INTRODUCTION The City of Phoenix, Arizona is located in the Phoenix Basin watershed which is prone to flash flooding several times each year. The runoff from these storms moves from the mountains in the north to the Salt River in the south. An extension of Interstate Highway 10 (1-10) will pass through the city east to west to form an Inner Loop through the downtown business district. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The I-10 Inner Loop extension will be a depressed roadway which would intercept the surface drainage of the Phoenix Basin and separate the watershed into two regions. To prevent flooding of the depressed roadway, runoff storm water collected from the northern half of the drainage area will be conveyed beneath the roadway to its natural outlet at the Salt River. A conveyance system composed of pressure tunnels beneath the city, shown in Figure 1, was proposed to achieve this goal . Table A presents the prominent features of each of the tunnels. This paper will describe geologic and engineering parameters specific to Phoenix which were used in the design of a series of tunnels to convey storm water from the I-10 Inner Loop to the Salt River. The design of tunnel initial and final support is described along with support and construction methods used by the Contractor.

Yield pillar-based gate road designs oftentimes fail to provide mine operators with adequate ground control because of the unknowing misemployment of "critically" sized pillars. A "critical" pillar is one that is too large to either yield nonviolently or yield before the roof and floor sustain permanent damage, but is too small to support full abutment loads. To demonstrate the critical pillar concept, a field study of a tapering gate road was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at the Sunnyside Coal Mines, Sunnyside, UT. Extreme pillar stresses and associated coal bumps characterize the response to first panel mining of a 16.8-m wide critical design. Significantly lower pillar stresses, early yielding of the pillar and adjacent panel rib, and an absence of coal bumps suggest that a narrower 12.2-m-wide design more closely approaches proper yield pillar dimensions. Probehole drilling of several 1 O.6-m-wide pillars revealed low stress levels and substantial pillar and panel rib yielding prior to abutment onset, indicating a properly functioning yield pillar design.

The Anshan Iron and Steel Co. (AISC) broke its steelmaking design capacity in 1978, bringing its total production of steel products to 6.86 Mt. Located south of the industrial city of Shenyang, Liaoning Province, in northeastern China, it is by far China’s most important iron and steel complex, ranking twentieth among world centers. The complex represents a unique blend of old ecluipment and new ideas for increased production and improved products. Under a state plan, the Chinese hope to raise capacity to almost 15 Mt/a in the future. Originally started by the Japanese in the early 1920s, Anshan has had a rather turbulent 60-year history. It was disassembled by the Soviets after World War II, only to be reassembled by them in the 1950s. Production was also suppressed during the Cultural Revolution. Since the present-day organization, AISC, emerged, the center has experienced progressively improving conditions as well as increased production. Today, the center includes 10 blast furnaces, 24 open hearths, and two basic oxygen units, designed for 7 Mt/a ironmaking and 6.5 Mt/a steelmaking. In addition, it has six batteries of cokemaking facilities with combined 4.4-Mt/a capacity. Solid Iron Resources Anshan’s iron resources consist of a proven reserve base of over 7 Gt of 30~0 Fe, according to Kao Yang, president of the Anshan Iron Mining Co., a subsidiary of AI SC, Most of that, he continued, is amenable to surface mining. Five major mines located to the north and northeast of the city of Anshan are the principal iron ore producers. These mines trend in a somewhat circular manner and combined, represent an estimated 28.6 Ylt/a of ore capacity. In addition, some 2.2 Gt of magnesite, a necessary ingredient in steelmaking, are also part of the reserve base, according to Kao. Annual production is around .2 Mt/a of 47% magnesite, well over the steelmaking center’s annual requirements, Excess production is shipped to other steel-making centers. The largest of Anshau’s open-pit mines is the Chitashan operation with a design capacity of 8 Mt/a. Ore reserves here are well over a billion tons of 30% Fe. Earlier plans to expand production at this mine to 15 Mt/a, with the help of US Steel, have been temporarily shelved. The other mines in the district and their rated design capacity are: Kungchangling, 7 Mt/a; Donganshan, 6.4 Mt/a; Dakushan, 4.2 Mt/ti; and Yenchienshan, 3.0 Mt/a. The Kungchangling mine is the richest in terms of ore grade at 6076 Fe. Reserves are somewhat smaller at 100 Mt. The unit also operates a small shrinkage stoping operation. Friction Rock Stabilizers, trade name II Sp 1 it Sets'" have been under research and development by the author and the Ingersoll-Rand Company since February of 1973. The United States Bureau of Mines and the Mines Enforcement and Safety Administration as well as many mining companies have cooperated in field testing the device. Split Set rock anchors are distinctively different from the widely used mechanical rock anchors or fully grouted rock anchors. They control ground movement internally in a manner that allows controlled deformation during the early phase of the ground reaction curve but then, as secondary creep develops, anchorage per unit length increases and they serve to strengthen and stabilize the opening for long periods of time. The history of research and development of the Scott Split Set rock anchor system with accompanying laboratory and field test data is presented in this paper.

Passive seismic monitoring is a useful tool for measuring wave propagation in rock mass in deep underground mining. About 20000 mining ? induced seismic events of a hard rock mine, are identified and investigated. The travel times of source-receiver pairs allow us to demonstrate temporal change in velocity. It was found that the average P wave velocity is about 6000 m/s in the mining regions. Velocity investigations on the data during about three months around the main shocks show a significant decrease of the average seismic wave velocity after the main shocks. The sudden drop of average velocity change after the main shocks implies the creation of new fractures in the rock mass due to the main shocks. Afterward, the average velocity increased to a normal level after a time duration of several days. A reasonable explanation for the post seismic velocity increase is that opened cracks begin to close due to crack healing.

Surface subsidence is a phenomenon mainly associated with longwall mining, although it can also occur if the coal pillar left to protect the surface deteriorates with time and results in the collapse of the room and pillar system. A method has been developed that utilizes physical mine models and laser holographic interferometry. This method is capable of measuring displacements as small as 5 micro- inches by means of generating displacement contours on a surface, even that of granular materials. Analysis of subsidence in room and pillar mining using models of various extraction ratios ad overburden depths along with two different types of overburden model material (sand and gelatin) has been made. The sand represented the extreme brittle conditions of geologic material while the gelatin represented visco-elastic behavior of geologic material. This paper deals with the analysis of data which has been gathered up to date, and mainly associated with the use of sand as an overburden model material. The analysis included the effect of variation of geometric parameters on surface subsidence. Among these parameters are: variation in seam depth and thickness, surface and seam inclination, and extraction ratio.

Kittilä Mine is a gold mine located in Northern Finland, owned and operated by Agnico Eagle Finland. The mining operation started in 2008 with open pits which were completed in 2012 and production moved to being entirely underground. The mine consists of four separate orebodies, currently producing 2.0 Mt per annum, and requiring over 19 km of development on a yearly basis. The principal mining method is long hole stoping with delayed backfill. Microseismic monitoring was initially tested in the Suuri orebody, in the mining block between the 625 and 500 Levels. A small monitoring system was installed in 2018, after observations of stress-induced damage to the rock mass and in anticipation of future mining at greater depth. The initial goals were to evaluate if useful data could be recorded and test the signal quality of different sensor types. Prior to 2018, ground control related challenges in the Suuri and Roura mining blocks had been mostly related to sill pillar mining and block movements between weak graphitic schist planes. Seismic monitoring in the Suuri deposit proved successful for following the rock mass response to mining and helped support the rationale for early monitoring in the new, deeper mining block in Rimpi at 900 m depth. Preliminary geotechnical characterization and testing of the rock mass showed areas of silicification in the footwall rocks with potentially continuous structural features. Seismic monitoring of the Rimpi area has confirmed the brittle behavior of the rock mass, with strong seismic responses induced by stress changes following blasting being recorded. In addition to this expected behavior, a large magnitude event associated with significant damage in the footwall drive development 90 m above the stoping was experienced. Initial investigation of the rockburst showed two separate damage locations with over 300 tons of displaced rock. The seismic monitoring system recorded this rockburst as a single seismic event with magnitude significantly larger than previously recorded. Additional analyses indicated a possible thrust fault event, triggering two separate strainbursts. Following this event, the ground support system was upgraded in parts of the footwall drives to improve dynamic capacity. Construction of a new transportation link frequently requires crossing under an existing highway or railroad. Although traffic diversions may permit a cut and cover structure to be built, ‘zero impact’ tunnel solutions are becoming increasingly popular. The vertical clearance between the new tunnel structure and the existing highway or tracks may be very low; sometimes less than two meters. This leaves little room for error since any ground loss can rapidly translate into surface settlement. Problems can be avoided by maintaining the stability of the tunnel face and by minimizing ground movement around the tunnel lining. This paper examines construction methods that have been used to construct short tunnels with shallow cover, and highlights factors to be considered for future projects.

During the last several years, implementation of trusses, in lieu of wood cribs, has been successful for supplemental tailgate support in the Pittsburgh seam. This paper reviews the truss support system provided by the new high strength 0.6" tensioned cable truss, which is now also being used in cribless tailgates. Cable loading and roof deformation were monitored to evaluate roof and floor performance. The test results indicate that the cable truss system successfully controlled the roof and floor during the first and second panel extraction. This paper will describe the advantages of cable trusses and their load transfer mechanism as well as mine evaluation.

The number of extended cut mining systems has increased significantly in coal mines over the last decade, and there is a constant push to extend the face ventilation systems to even greater setback distances. The need to maintain airflow at setback distances of 12.2 m (40 ft) and beyond requires that methods for delivering intake air to the face be improved, or alternative ventilation techniques be implemented. The emphasis of this research effort was to examine various techniques to improve the distribution of available air at the mining face in order to reduce face methane levels. A study was conducted comparing the performance of a jet fan, used in conjunction with a machine mounted scrubber, with blowing curtain ventilation in a 27.5 m (90 ft) heading. In addition, a second study was performed on blowing curtain systems examining how scrubber flow, intake air velocity, and curtain setback influence face methane concentrations. Results showed that when the heading advances to a depth of 27.5 m (90 ft) blowing curtain systems were more efficient at diluting face methane levels when compared to a jet fan. Also, increases in scrubber flows and curtain velocity resulted in lower face methane concentrations for blowing curtain systems at 9.2 and 15.2 m (30 and 50 ft) setbacks.
