This paper presents talc milling guided by a theme of "So You Want to Be In The Talc Business". Such a theme strikes a cautionary note to warn the uninitiated of potential pitfalls, and this paper will cover briefly some of the technical traps as well as one of the larger talc milling operations. It is important to our purpose to pre- sent some of the market and mineral complications that make the business of producing and selling industrial talcs much more intricate than an outsider would perceive. Metal markets by comparison are great worldwide pools into which production streams of generally identical metals can flow over a weir of market prices. Industrial talc markets are not as well defined and often must be developed by the producer working closely with a specific customer or groups of customers to prove out the attributes of the specific product from a new property. All the negatives of a new market seem to work against the introductory talc in the forms of industry or customer reluctance to change, sales prices, cost of delivery, mode of transportation, health considerations of the minerals and many more. Just locating the potential customers for a new industrial talc may be a substantial undertaking. Thus, an analogy of the worldwide metal market might compare starting a new talc operation to trying to gather up enough fallen rain drops to be able to start a production stream of a worthwhile size.

Pig iron nuggets, which have similar chemical and physical properties with blast furnace pig iron, were produced by a single step heat treatment of self reducing – fluxing dried greenballs. During this single step heat treatment the transformation of self reducing fluxing dried greenballs into pig iron nuggets did not take place instantaneously. Rather, it was composed of three transformation stages, (1) transformation of self reducing – fluxing dried greenballs into direct reduced iron (DRI), (2) transformation of DRI into transition direct reduced iron (TDRI), and (3) transformation of TDRI into pig iron nuggets. Thus, the objective of this research was to investigate these transformation mechanisms by analyzing the transformation stage products. The transformation stage products were produced at a constant furnace temperature of 1425°C and various furnace residence times. They were characterized according to their microstructure, microhardness and apparent density. The changes in the product’s physical and chemical properties with furnace residence time were utilized in understanding the transformation behavior, the chemical events that took place and the controlling mechanisms. It was determined that the transformations were dictated by the changes in the slag viscosity and wetting properties, and by carbon diffusion into metallized areas.

If you believe that the goal of the space program should be a permanent, manned presence in space, then you believe in space mining. Historically, mining has been an integral part of the frontier. For the space frontier, mining is absolutely necessary. Any large-scale space facility must be built from materials mined in space. The reason is simple: the cost of getting material off the earth overwhelms all other costs. The cost of launching a pound of material from earth into low earth orbit ranges from $5000 to $10,000. Multiply this number by three to get to geostationary orbit. With the added expense of landing on the moon, an object is worth more than its weight in gold. Most space projects are impossible if materials must be hauled out of earth's enormous gravity well. For example, habitats (large structures in free-fall that simulate earth's gravity) and massive solar power satellites will take millions of tons of material to construct. Transportation economics alone dictate space as the source for oxygen, construction materials, and metals, among others. Space mining is not concerned with introducing materials for terrestrial use. The need for materials in space is infinite. The challenge for the mining industry is enormous.

The Galatia Mine is a dual-seam underground coal mine located in Saline County, IL. In 1984, it became the first coal mine to be permitted by the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals to operate diesel equipment underground. And it is one of the larger underground coal mines in the nation to use diesel equipment. From the beginning, Kerr-McGee determined that diesel equipment offered the best approach to the safe and productive development and operation of the Galatia Mine. The flexibility of this equipment and its ability to promptly respond to changing conditions and mining locations made its use desirable for building this large dual-seam coal mine. The mine had a planned nominal annual capacity of 3.6 Mt/a (4 million stpy) and would employ more than 500 people. Galatia's current reserves are estimated at 231 Mt (255 million st) of recoverable coal from two seams of high-quality, high-volatile bituminous coal. The Harrisburg No. 5 seam is shipped primarily as a low-sulfur steam coal or as a metallurgical blend stock. It is also used in the pulverized coal injection (PCI) process for steel making. The Herrin No. 6 seam is a medium-sulfur coal. Annual production is shown in Fig. 1. A good indicator of a mine's success is employee productivity improvement. For many reasons - the proper use of diesel equipment, the introduction of longwalls and increased employee ex¬perience - Galatia employees have achieved a steady growth in annual productivity (Fig. 1) while maintaining an exceptional safety record.

This paper summarizes the geomechanics programs conducted in two hard rock underground mining operations in the Western United States, between 1966 and 1981. The two projects were directed towards understanding the behavior of the rock masses, at the scale of the caverns. To this end, the emphasis was put on large scale field measurements, complemented by limited laboratory testing. The results of these observations were used to build realistic finite element models of the underground chambers. In the marble mine, at Crestmore, California, the models were applied to the structural optimization of the room-and-pillar pattern. In the granite mining, at Climax, Nevada Test Site, the models explained some unusual stress changes observed during excavation. Based on the large number of geomechanical techniques employed, specific conclusions and recommendations are offered regarding the quality, applicability, and usefulness of the various methods. The two case histories clearly indicate chat numerical models are extremely useful for a detailed understanding of the structural behavior of mine openings. To be realistic, these models must be based first and foremost on large scale field observations. The lessons Learned on these two projects also are directly applicable to the design and analysis of nuclear waste repositories in hard rocks such as basalt, granite, and welded tuff.

Introduction The Homestake Mining Co. has always been big on gold. After 108 years in the business, the company and its principal product are almost synonymous. The relationship continues. On Sept. 28, 1985, Homestake held formal dedication ceremonies for its newest gold mine - McLaughlin. The McLaughlin open-pit operation is located in northern California, some 113 km (70 miles) northeast of San Francisco. It lies near the boundaries of three counties - Napa, Yolo, and Lake - and a portion of its facilities are located in each. McLaughlin was originally the site of the Manhattan mercury mine that produced nearly 80,000 flasks of the quicksilver from the 1860s to 1978. At the September dedication, Homestake renamed the mine in honor of the late Donald H. McLaughlin. McLaughlin was with Homestake for nearly 60 years. He rose from exploration geologist to his ultimate positions of chief executive officer, director, chairman of the board of directors, chairman emeritus, and chairman of the executive committee. The discovery of the McLaughlin deposit occurred in 1978, the last year of operation for the Manhattan mine. Homestake geologists used a newly developed model and found surface gold at the mine site. That same year, Homestake signed an agreement with the property owner and began a two-and-a-half year exploration program. An initial discovery announcement of 31.1 t (1 million oz) of gold was made in 1980. In 1981, this was revised to 93.3 t (3 million oz), or 18 Mt (20 million st) of ore grading 5.2 g/t (0.152 oz per st). Expected mine life is 20 years. Construction began in September 1983, following the issuance of stage one permits. Start-up of operations took place in early 1985 and the first gold-silver dore bar was poured on March 4. Since then, more than 540 kt (600,000 st) of ore has been milled, producing about 1.6 t (50,000 oz) of gold. Of special interest at McLaughlin is the use of three autoclaves for gold extraction. According to Homestake, this is a first. The autoclaves are designed for a 90% gold recovery rate. Early results have proven yields at this rate and higher. "Paste Technology has some advantages comparing to other surface disposal methods. With this method, it is possible to pump high concentrated solid materials to very long distances without segregation problem. However, it is known from Literature that pumpability of materials is completely related to rheological properties of the materials. For this reason, in this study, the rheological parameters (e.g. yield stress and viscosity values) of the paste material prepared from Pb-Zn tailings at various solid ratios (60-85%) were obtained in order to determine the pumpability of the paste material. Additionally, slump tests, which are usually used in mining industry, was carried out. Finally, regression analysis was made between the slump values and rheological parameters of the paste material to find a correlation between two independent parameters. The results showed that there is a great correlation between the slump values and the yield stress of the material. On the other hand, there was no correlation with viscosity: ty=430.28-16.877Sv (R2= 0,94; ty: Yield Stress (Pa), Sv: Slump Value (cm)). Based on the results obtained from this study, it can be clearly concluded that the slump values obtained from a simple test can be used to predict yield stress values of paste materials. INTRODUCTION Recently, surface disposal of mining tailings has become one of the biggest problems in mining industry in terms of environmental issues. Therefore, several researches have been focused on this subject in order to find a best solution or method for this problem. These studies showed that paste technology has some advantages compared to other conventional methods. Tailings thickened to the extent show no segregation of particles during transportation, and relatively small amount of settling occur post-deposition which are often called “paste” (Cincilla et al. 1997). Paste tailing technology has two applications in the industrial area as underground paste fill and surface paste disposal. Paste tailing technology was first started to be used in Grund mine, Germany in the late 1970s (Grice, 1998). Process tailing material, water and - if needed - cement materials, which are the components of the paste, must be blended to obtain a homogenous mixture suitable for pumpability. Consistency behavior of the paste material is determined using a conventional sedimentation cone concrete test (slump). Meanwhile, the slump value of the paste must be between 200 and 250 mm for surface applications (Newman et al., 2001). Additionally, in the case of underground paste system, the optimum slump value must be between 150 and 200 mm. On the other hand, the water content and density of paste at certain slump value change depending on the amount of fine particles in the tailing sample. While moisture of the material will be high, its density will be low because of surface area of particles which increases with decrease in particle size (Meggyes and Debreczeni, 2006). For pumpability of the paste to long distances, slump value of the paste must be good enough to be accepted for use of surface paste disposal. Paste material has a yield stress because they show non-Newtonian behavior and generally is classified as a Bingham plastic fluid. (Cooke, 2008; Theriault, 2003). In addition, the appropriate viscosity value of the paste along with the yield stress must be between 100 and 250 Pa (Bascetin et al., 2013; Bascetin et al., 2014; Bascetin et al., 2015)."

Stope instability at Ashanti Goldfields Company Ltd. (AGC) is a major concern. Using information from field mapping, major discontinuity sets were defined, Rock Quality Designation (RQD) was determined. The stability of wedges in the stope walls was assessed using the commercially available computer program UNWEDGE(Rock Science, 1992). Analytical results indicate that the presence of graphite infilling in joints contributes to instability, while steeply dipping joints control wedge slabbing and wedge toppling in the hanging wall. Stable stope widths and dimensions were determined to range from8.1 to 30 meters (m).

The El Sauzal deposit is a classic, high sulfidation, epithermal gold system located in the southwestern Chihuahua state of Mexico (Fig. 1). A Francisco Gold geologist discovered the prospect in1995. El Sauzal was encountered as a result of an extensive grassroots exploration program in the rugged, dissected volcanic terrains of the Sierra Madre Occidental, around the historical Batopilas silver camp. At El Sauzal, high grade gold is hosted within a series of more permeable, low-dipping, lithic and fine-grained dacitic rocks of early Tertiaryage. The mineralization appears tobe structurally and lithologically controlled. The alteration characteristics are typical of a high sulfidation system, including kaolinite, illite, alunite, dickite and pyrophyllite.

Mining has been the mainstay of the Woods Creek Valley for more than a century. The head of the valley is at the Continental Divide, about 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado. First, it was the quest for gold and silver that drew people to the valley. Then, when molybdenum was classified as a strategic metal by the U. S. Government during World War I, it was the valley's molybdenum mineralization which attracted the most attention. Molybdenum is used primarily as an alloying material in superior grades of steel. Circumstances responsible for providing the label "Urad" are unknown, but Urad is variously reported to be an acronym for "Uranium Research and Development" or "Uranium Research of America Division". The search for uranium was fruitless as no ore grade uranium exists in this area. The moly orebody was first developed and mined by the Primos Exploration Company from 1914 to 1919. During World War II, the mine was purchased by the government and turned over to the Molybdenum Corporation of America to operate. In 1963 AMAX Inc. purchased the property for $2 million. After spending nearly $30 million for exploration and development, AMAX put the mine into production again in 1967.

The drive selected for any piece of machinery must adequately satisfy the application requirements both during the starting interval and at running conditions, All loading possibilities of the drive must be known and allowances made for any adverse limiting conditions such as extreme cold, or perhaps an intermittent excessive loading situation etc. In general, the drive must be selected to provide the required operating characteristics with maximum reliability and at minimum cost. Simplicity of overall design is always an advantage and care must be exercised to insure that systems incorporating unnecessary complicated parts are not indiscriminantly provided. Important non-technical considerations such as equipment avail-ability (on an overseas project) as well as standardization details also play a role in the drive selection process. Additionally, an assessment of the potential capabilities of the personnel that will have to maintain the equipment can have some influence on the final choice. Several types of prime movers are available but this article will restrict itself to the use of induction motors operating from an available alternating current power source. Many drive arrangements are possible, the most common being the direct coupled single motor arrangement. In a systematic study, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated seat designs in low- and mid-seam shuttle cars during production operations at two underground coal mines in southern West Virginia. The purpose was to support, with additional data, earlier findings that NIOSH ergonomic seat designs (featuring viscoelastic foam padding and lower-back support) may help reduce health risks to operators of coal mine shuttle cars. Eight shuttle car operators evaluated seven seat designs (one already in use in each vehicle and five NIOSH designs) relative to perceived and measured whole-body vibration (WBV) exposure (including vehicle jarring/jolting) and discomfort. Operators’ perceptions using a visual analog scale (VAS) and questionnaire ratings were compared with International Standards Organization (ISO) 2631-1:1985 fatigue-decreased proficiency (FDP) limits and measured WBV levels on low- and mid-seam shuttle cars. Objective and subjective data results indicated that NIOSH seat designs (with added adjustability, lower-back support and improved seat padding) performed better to reduce vehicle jarring/jolting levels and that shuttle car operators favored them over existing seat designs. The NIOSH low- and mid-seam shuttle car seats showed 45 to 77 percent better performance in FDP and 9 to 60 percent better performance overall in operators’ ratings. Considering the VAS results for low- and mid-seam shuttle cars under no-load conditions, operators rated the level of jarring/jolting 18 to 89 percent lower with the NIOSH seats. Reductions in measured vehicle jarring/jolting were 19 to 46 percent for the three-directional vector sum accelerations relative to the existing seats on the low- and mid-seam shuttle cars. Questionnaire responses indicated that operators for both shuttle car models rated NIOSH seat designs as more comfortable overall. Vehicle operators most frequently suggested adding armrests to improve the seats on the mid-seam shuttle car. A suggested improvement for the low-seam shuttle car was to make the seat a better fit for the operator compartment, which would enhance clearance between the operator and vehicle controls and allow for better seat adjustment and operator visibility.

C. W. Hunt I wish to register strong disagreement with the choices of drilling sites chosen by the Continental Scientific Drilling Committee, while endorsing the stated objectives. Of special significance is the lack of any site involving the metals most needed today in the US, while 9 to 13 km of drilling are allocated to gold and silver districts and 11 to 17 km to base metal (mainly copper) districts. Why is nothing proposed for platinum group or chromite? Is this because the committee did not know of such a site? If so, I offer such a site in California (see Fig. 1). The mineralization shown in Table 1 occurs in a large peridotite body in western Tehama County, CA. Petrography has demonstrated unequivocal evidence of migrated PGE deposited in peridotite and chromite of hypabyssal nature. Active diapirism (due probably to serpentine buoyancy) above a reactivated mantle to surface conduit marks the position of the conduit. Young explosion breccia cemented loosely by volcanic glass and tuff demonstrates the significance of the conduit as the prime source of the various emissions. Deep drilling could result in major metals discoveries as well as shedding light on the grand questions of platinum group mineralization. What role water has played in this occurrence is not yet certain; but chlorine and asphaltite have been detected in and adjacent to native PGM, suggesting a major role for water. The explosion breccia suggests that this excellent site could overlie entrapped geothermal steam.

Introduction Despite the focus on the so-called "high-tech" and service components of the economy, the minerals industry in 1987 continued to provide the world the overwhelmingly dominant share of the total raw material supply for all manufacturing operations. And, in the form of fertilizers and other soil treatment materials, minerals also supplied indispensable raw materials to ensure continued high production of the agricultural and forestry sectors of the world's economy. Moreover, the role of minerals as a source of construction raw materials was essential to that sector. On the basis of preliminary and partial statistics on world output of crude mineral commodities, 1987 appears to have been a year of further recovery from the recessional years of 1981-1983. The value of world crude mineral industry production (all mineral commodities including fuels) apparently advanced about 5% to nearly $1.1 trillion in terms of constant 1983 dollars.' That is significantly above the recently revised 1986 level of nearly $1.05 trillion, but still considerably below the record-to-date high of $1.27 trillion set in 1980, as shown in Table 1. That growth in value took place despite relatively flat world oil prices - oil being the most important component of the aggregate, as it has been for decades. There is insufficient information available to assess the total value of processed mineral commodities (refined metals, refined oil, manufactured fertilizers and the like). But a figure of $2.6 trillion (constant 1983 dollars) would be a quite conservative estimate for those materials derived only from primary or newly mined materials. And an additional, as-yet-unestimated increment should be added for processed materials derived from secondary raw materials - scrap and other reclaimed substances. From a world trade viewpoint, minerals and mineral products dominate in terms of tonnage. For example, in 1985, on a weight basis, mineral commodities including fuels constituted more than 58% of all goods moving through the Suez Canal and 53% of all goods passing through the Panama Canal. These waterways cannot accommodate giant tankers and ore carriers. So an even larger share of total oceanic trade is composed of minerals and mineral products. Yet, in terms of value, the share of the total accounted for by these industrial essentials is much lower than that accounted for by other commodities, most notably sophisticated high-tech equipment and other goods with a relatively high per-pound value. Worldwide data on the value of mineral export trade for 1987 is so incomplete at this writing that it is impossible to assess that actual level. Indeed, the compilation of similar available data for 1986 covers only the exports of nations with developed market economies. In 1985, these countries accounted for only 67% of total world exports of all goods. They accounted for only 41% of world exports of major mineral commodities: crude nonmetals; metal ores, concentrates, and scrap; mineral fuels; nonferrous metals excluding gold; and iron and steel. For these developed-market-economy countries, the value of exports of these major mineral commodities declined by more than 10% between 1985 and 1986. El Teniente Mine expansion plans are currently under development and construction stages through an integrated project strategy that will allow the continuity of future mining. The deepest sector corresponds to Andes Norte Project that faced rockburst risks during tunneling in a completely different manner, implementing different actions for the mitigation of seismic hazard and seismic risk management, based on the following main aspects: rock mass preconditioning techniques such as destress blasting and hydraulic fracturing, improvement of rock support design with the inclusion of elements with higher energy dissipation capacities, use of mechanized equipment for the most critical activities in addition to re-entry protocols and improvements in geological, geomechanical and seismic data collection procedures to reduce the uncertainty of rock mass behavior. The current seismic risk management strategy integrates all of these elements and is the basis of construction methodologies in use, supporting the technical feasibility of tunneling in high-stress environments.

The concentration of low grade iron ores to pellets or sinter fines suitable for blast furnace feed or direct reduction is highly energy intensive and costly in terns of both size reduction and separatory processes. Large equipment with high throughputs are required to make the fine grinds and multi-stage separations economical. Control of these circuits is essential to producing a high grade product. As a result, iron ore concentrators possess some of the more sophisticated instrumentation for process control in the mineral dressing industry. These instruments must characterize flowstreams of up to 8,000 gpm where 80% of the particles are less than 50 µm. The past decade has been one where enormous strides have been made in automated control of iron ore plants. This paper reviews state-of- the-art control systems for crushing, grinding, magnetic separation, froth flotation and sizing/classifying circuits. Trends toward computerization and plant automation in response to a dismal outlook for North American steel production are also examined.

In the mining industry, safety and training are particularly important because mining is a dangerous occupation. Throughout the years, federal and state safety regulations have been written and revised to keep up with the changing technologies. And mine operators have installed their own safety and training programs. They have come to realize that a safe and healthy workforce has positive effects on productivity and profitability —not to mention avoiding the high costs of injury-related absenteeism.

The substantial investment in tunnels anticipated in the next twenty years has focused new attention on the economics of tunnel construction itself and on some costly problems associated with underground work: the uncertain geologic conditions, the performance and adaptability of men and equipment, and the need for quicker, more efficient excavation methods. There also exists a need to develop better ways of estimating tunnel construction. Inaccuracies in current bid estimates stem from a number of causes, among them (1) the effects of geologic conditions, which are not adequately known prior to construction, (2) the dependence of actual cost on the construction method used and on the interactions among the operations occurring underground, and (3) the reliability of tunneling equipment. Inability to estimate final costs for conventional tunneling more accurately has in turn caused difficulty in gauging the costs and benefits attributable to new tunneling technologies either under development or for which R&D programs are planned. ATTRIBUTES OF THE TUNNEL COST MODEL This paper presents a computer based Tunnel Cost Model (TCM) which quantitatively assesses the uncertainties inherent in underground work, and is detailed enough to aid in preparing estimates or bids. "Over 600 longwall panels have been mined in Pennsylvania in the last 50 years. Of those 600 panels, 25 panels undermined interstate highways. Despite this quantity of panels, much is still unknown regarding the detailed effects of undermining highways. The Gateway Mine, the Emerald Mine, and the Cumberland Mine undermined I-79 with 17 panels between 1982–1989 and 2003–2008, respectively; mine Eighty-Four undermined I-70 with 4 panels between 1987–2000.Through the examination of the panels that undermined I-70 and I-79, it is possible to determine which factors have most impacted the highway alignments. In some locations, the highway intersects with panels at angles ranging from 45 to 80 degrees, and at others, it runs between two panels, which simulates the effect of gateroads on the subsidence. The panels width to overburden ratio varies between 0.64 and 1.7, meaning that the interstates were influenced by both subcritical and supercritical subsidence basins. The face advance rates and overburden depths also vary between the panels.Unfortunately, specific information detailing highway impacts associated with unique characteristics of the subsidence basins are limited. However, using the profile function model and influence function model within the Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS), the effects of overburden, panel size, and orientation of the road to highway can be indirectly assessed by profile and influence models of subsidence basin formation.INTRODUCTIONCoal mining has been an integral part of Pennsylvania’s history. Room-and-pillar mines have been active since the late-1700s when coal was extracted from outcrops. By 1830, the city of Pittsburgh alone consumed more than 400 tons of bituminous coal each day for domestic and industrial use (PADEP, 2019). In the late 1960s, the face of mining in Pennsylvania changed with the development of full extraction longwall mines. Since that development, over 600 longwall panels have been mined in the Pittsburgh Coalbed in Pennsylvania alone (PADEP, 2019).As longwall mining and other forms of full extraction mining have increased in popularity, the amount of planned subsidence impacting the surface has also increased. The stresses and strains induced by longwall subsidence can cause damage to the surface as well any structures, water supplies, or water bodies that lie above the panel. Since the behavior of soils and structures vary, one way to study the surface effects of longwall mining is to analyze the impact on flat, rigid, pavement surfaces. Examining factors that vary the impact of subsidence with respect to highway alignment can demonstrate the favorable orientation of an alignment to avoid or mitigate damage and critical impact zones in a subsidence basin."

INTRODUCTION Recent advances in high-pressure water jet technology can be effectively employed in mining and tunneling. The new equipment is based on available industrial hardware such as pumps, nozzles, and rotary swivels and seals, and is compatible with present mining and tunneling techniques. Principal advantages of water-jet assisted cutting relative to standard cutting are higher production rates, lower dust levels, and reduced fines. When used on rock and coal miners, water jets mean that relatively smaller and cheaper machines can be purchased. If properly applied, the combined effect is lower cost and significantly improved health and safety. While commercial use of high-pressure water blast cutting and extraction of rock (and concrete) already has a firm foothold in Europe, application of this new technique is just beginning in America. This paper begins with current American applications of high-pressure water jets for drills, for slotting and channeling machines, and then discusses the emerging technology for initiating rock failure in conjunction with drag bits on coal plows, continuous miners and boom-type miners (roadheaders). The focus of this paper is use of high-pressure water jets for cutting rock. High-pressure water jet cutting utilizes water above 70 MPa and currently reaches to 300 MPa and above. Some informatfon is included on low pressure "wethead" coal shearers and boom miners with water pressure to about 15 MPa.
