Introduction Stainless steel has by tradition been a common construction material for hydrometallurgy processes and the most common grades can be found amongst the ASTM 300-series, i.e. austenitic grades of type 304L, 316L and 317L. However, there are a number of new grades available today, which imply more cost effective solutions for those designing plants where good resistance to acids, containing the desired metal ions, often contaminated with chlorides and other halides, is the key issue. There are austenitic-ferritic or duplex grades having the same or even better corrosion resistance than the austenitic grades and approximately twice the strength, which enables design in thinner gauges, which in turn implies less weight and less cost. They have also excellent engineering properties, enabling fabrication of process equipment, machinery and different types of tanks. On top of that, they contain less nickel and molybdenum than their austenitic counterparts, which implies not only lower cost for alloying elements, but also a more stable price when considering the price fluctuations for these alloying elements during the last years. This paper describes briefly the family of duplex stainless steel and it presents a number of relevant corrosion tests where duplex grades have been compared with austenitic grades. The results have in several cases been verified by in-plant exposures in zinc and copper production plants. It also describes applications and experience of duplex grades within a variety of hydrometallurgy plants. Installations of highly alloyed austenitic grades will be described as well. The corrosion tests and service experience reported cover hydrometallurgical processes based on sulphuric acid.

Introduction In preparing this paper considerable time was spent attempting to find some upbeat data about the mining industry, so those of us in the field could feel somewhat better about future prospects. Much to my regret, I failed to uncover substantial evidence that our near-term or, for that matter, our long-term opportunities appear all that bright in North America. That is certainly not the kind of assessment anyone likes to hear or accept as even a possibility. Those remarks may, on the surface, appear far too pessimistic. This industry will experience a recovery and most likely will see conditions begin to improve later this year or early next. The kind and degree of recovery, however, will more than likely differ from those experienced in the past. Fundamental Changes Clearly, the fundamentals on a world scale of our business have undergone important changes. In recognizing these fundamental changes, mining authorities believe productivity advances are needed to change the direction mining has taken in recent years. The really tough question is whether increases in productivity will be enough to change the course of events that has dominated the mining sector for the past decade. Before one can provide an honest answer, an appraisal of what has and is happening now is necessary. Here are some changes and events that have taken place that effect domestic mining and will probably continue: • Mineral-rich lesser developed countries (LDCs) in Africa, South America, and Asia-Pacific have reached a point where they have developed the needed mining infrastructure to not only produce at a high rate, but in many instances, at a lower cost than fully developed countries. Just as importantly, these countries, even if they do not enjoy lower costs, will produce for world export with government subsidies because min¬ing products are key in obtaining badly needed foreign exchange. • These producing countries also have the distance advantage of lower labor, environmental, and other important regulatory costs. If that were not enough, these same countries have minerals with considerably higher grade ore and, in some cases, much lower cost accessibility. • Exporting North American commodities is impaired by a dollar that continues to strengthen against other important currencies around the world. There are other impediments to overcome, but these represent some of the realities our industry faces. Can those obstacles be overcome through improving productivity? In the past, this industry has offset the impact of these events to a sizeable degree through innovations of mining techniques, equipment and processes, and by increasing the size of its individual operations to reduce costs. Will further enhancements along these lines be enough to alter this changing balance in the future? While there is no answer, it is apparent that if we do not mount a full-scale assault in some key areas, our prospects will not be encouraging. Productivity improvements throughout the entire chain of the mining industry most certainly rates as a high priority. Every link in that chain from mine planning, equipment selections, and transportation considerations needs to be examined and reexamined to assure the lowest effective cost is developed. Quality, while oftentimes costing a little more initially, is still the most cost effective purchasing decision to make. Regulations Another area of concern is regulations, be they environmental or those that dictate what must or must not be done in running our business. Industrial minerals play a central and dual role in the sustainable development (SD) of natural resources. Over the past decade the mining industry has increasingly focused on sustainably extracting and processing industrial minerals. This trend has been driven by higher energy costs, diminishing water resources and sensitivity towards environmental stewardship. Industrial minerals have been used throughout human history as low cost, naturally occurring, materials. Today they are critical components of recycled packaging, energy efficient building materials, light weight paper coatings, and other products critical to the responsible utilization of global resources. As industrial minerals become more widely used in ?green? products, mining companies have established best practices for the sustainable management of industrial minerals mining and processing. These management practices include reducing energy consumption, minimizing water usage, increasing waste recovery through recycling and process optimization, and maximizing the amount of ore extracted per acre of disturbed land. With the commitment to SD principles, quantitative methods for objectively measuring SD performance have become increasingly important. Measuring sustainability impact is a valuable tool for effectively applying SD principles and for making choices that balance sustainable development against other business objectives. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND MINING Sustainable development is a term that has become a common part of our lexicon; however, it has multiple meanings and interpretations leading to a sometimes confusing and contradictory array of definitions. The absence of a single, precise definition reflects the fact that SD is a broad concept or paradigm that offers guiding principles as opposed to a specific set of criteria or regulations enforceable by government or other oversight agencies. While a principle based conceptual approach allows businesses to broadly apply SD practices that are tailored to their specific situation, it has also led the public to sometimes view voluntary corporate SD programs with a degree of skepticism (Walker and Howard 2002). This is particularly true in the mining industry. One reason for this skepticism is that the relationship between SD and mining is misunderstood and to many, sustainably developing non-renewable mineral resources is a contradiction (Rajaram et al. 2005). However, this view takes a very narrow interpretation of the tenets of SD. The second is that mining carries a legacy of poor environmental stewardship that does not accurately reflect current corporate environmental practices Many minerals companies have adopted the Brundtland Comission?s definition of SD (United Nations 1987): ?? development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs?. This definition is very broad and can be interpreted in a number of ways. It provides a general context for sustainable development and is not intended to provide detailed guidelines addressing specific aspects of sustainable development. To fill this gap the following SD principles were drafted by the international minerals community in 2003 (ICMM 2003): 1. Implement and maintain ethical business practices and sound systems of corporate governance. 2. Integrate sustainable development considerations within the corporate decision-making process. 3. Uphold fundamental human rights and respect cultures, customs and values in dealings with employees and others who are affected by our activities. 4. Implement risk management strategies based on valid data and sound science. 5. Seek continual improvement of our health and safety performance. 6. Seek continual improvement of our environmental performance. 7. Contribute to conservation of biodiversity and integrated approaches to land use planning. 8. Facilitate and encourage responsible product design, use, re-use, recycling and disposal of our products. 9. Contribute to the social, economic and institutional development of the communities in which we operate. 10. Implement effective and transparent engagement, communication and independently verified reporting arrangements with our stakeholders. These guidelines insure that SD concepts are applied equally across the industry while setting a clear performance standard and benchmark against which to evaluate success. By adopting these principles and issuing the Milos Statement (http://www.sdimi.org/milos_decl_October%206_2003.pdf), which provides a more detailed vision for integrating SD into everyday business operations, the minerals industry has embraced SD as a core corporate value. The unifying and holistic approach embodied in SD principles impacts the entire mine to market life cycle and addresses the economic, environmental and social consequences of mining. INDUSTRIAL MINERALS The world economy relies heavily on minerals; they are essential to economic prosperity and the quality of life. Industrial minerals are non-metallic, non-fuel minerals that provide the raw materials for a vast range of products used in most every aspect of daily life. They are mined and processed worldwide and they span the spectrum from relatively low value, high volume commodities (e.g. common clay, crushed stone) that are usually mined locally to high value, low volume specialty materials that are sourced from unique one of a kind deposits (e.g. barite, talc, mica). High volume commodity mining operations are often located near the end use market which, in most cases, means areas of high population density where construction and other urban activities drive demand. In these situations the strict adherence to SD principles is particularly critical as these are highly visible operations that must meet the public?s demand for good corporate citizenship. These operations are similar to chemical or other manufacturing facilities that operate near population centers. "SUMMARY The Istanbul Strait Road Crossing Project includes a 3.34 kilometer subsea tunnel excavated by TBM with an excavation diameter of 13.71 m. The tunnel will incorporate two road decks, each employing two traffic lines and shoulder with the daily capacity of 100,000 light vehicles. The tunnel alignment crosses full face rock sections with heavily fractured zones due to tectonic events as well as a long central stretch of difficult mixed face and very variable soft ground conditions. The demanding ground conditions and the large diameter in combination with realized face pressures well above 10 bar required a highly specialized and well adapted TBM. The paper describes the project challenges and the related technical solutions incorporated within the TBM design as well as the real site experience. INTRODUCTION In 2013, a 13.71 m diameter Mixshield was manufactured in Germany for the Istanbul Strait Road Crossing Project. The delivery of the TBM in late 2013 was a major milestone for the Istanbul Strait Road Crossing Project, also known as the Eurasia Tunnel Project. The Eurasia Project (www.avrasyatuneli.com.tr/en) consists of a 14.6 km route including a 5.4 km tunnel segment in its central part crossing the Bosphorus. The 3.34 km subsea section of the tunnel was excavated in closed mode using a Mixshield TBM. The remaining tunnel length is constructed by sprayed concrete lining (SCL) method followed by a cast in place (CIP) lining or by cut and cover (CC) structures for the TBM transition boxes (Figure 1, right). Other project sections on the European and Asian side consist of upgrading and widening surface access roads towards the tunnel. Conceptual ideas of connecting Asia with Europe via a tunnel crossing the Bosphorus have been around for an extended time and only became realistic towards the end of the 20th century based on significant technical developments in mechanized tunneling. Feasibility studies for a new Bosphorus crossing in 2003 and 2005 confirmed and suggested a road tunnel in its present alignment as the preferred solution. Following an international tender process the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications of Turkey assigned ATAS, a special purpose company formed by Yapi Merkezi (Turkey) and SK E&C (South Korea), to design, build and operate the Eurasia Tunnel Project. The Implementation Contract was signed in February 2011. In 2012, Herrenknecht AG was selected as the supplier for the 13.71 m Mixshield TBM."

While there have always been mining activities on the outcrops of the copper deposits around Tsumeb, large scale mining activities in Namibia only started in colonial times. Originally focusing on the known deposits, the then German Geological Survey and independent geologists soon discovered significant deposits all over the country. This eventually lead to intensive mining operations all over the country on copper, gold, diamonds, fluorspar and finally uranium. Ever since those days, mining has been one of the major economical factors of Namibia?s development, as shown in picture 1. In the Central Namib Desert mining on base metals started in 1901, and first uranium deposits were discovered as soon as 1910, later followed by others, this did, however, not lead to any mining activities on those uranium deposits in the following decades. [ ] The upswing in the use of nuclear energy in the 1960s and early 1970s triggered some extensive uranium exploration worldwide and also in Namibia. Several airborne radiometric overviews were conducted by the Geological Survey at this stage and eventually the first uranium mine was commissioned in 1976. In the following three decades, the focus of prospecting activities in Namibia shifted away from uranium again. However, since 2000 the forecast for a developing and growing global economy and its even stronger growing energy demand have triggered a large number of nuclear energy projects worldwide, thus increasing the installed nuclear energy generation capacity from 387 GW today to more than 490 GW in 2025.

Environmental self-monitoring is one of the advanced approaches for industrial sustainability programs. Organization for Economy Cooperation and Development (OECD) defines self-monitoring as ?the system of organizational and technical measures put in place and financed by [the] regulated subject? in order to ensure their compliance with regulatory requirements?1. Self-monitoring is beneficial for industrial operators, communities, and governments. Industrial companies use self-monitoring as a central element of their compliance management that allows them to fulfill their duties, obligations, and to avoid citations. When industries control their emissions and ensure workers are not exposed above the regulated limits, communities are better. It is impossible for an EPA, OSHA, or MSHA inspectors to be close to every emission source or workplace full-time. It is much more effective for industries to self-monitor, under due supervision. Occupational conditions are a very important part of industry and health and safety self-monitoring should be highly prioritized. In this paper we will research the regulatory basis and best practice of occupational self-monitoring. We will show that not only is self-monitoring a vital element of an occupational health & safety management system, but that you need a management system for affective monitoring.

Introduction Since the last decade the iron ore processing industry has undergone drastic changes from supplying screened and natural ores to manufacturing tailored concentrates and pellets. Increased need for the beneficiation of lower grade iron ore deposits and the increased demand for higher grade concentrates necessitate finer grinding of iron ores before concentration. The normal filtration stations used in the past are experiencing difficulties in dewatering the finely ground concentrates to moisture levels acceptable for balling. In addition to finer grinding, applications of complex beneficiation techniques has decreased the filterability of the concentrates and create problems in filtration of iron ore concentrates. An overview of the filtration literature indicates there are few research reports on the dewatering of iron ore concentrate slurries. There exists a need to understand the principles and mechanisms involved in the filtration of iron ore concentrate slurries with a goal of developing more efficient filtration techniques. This paper presents the results from the first phase of our research program that included the development of a reproducible benchscale filtration technique and the investigation of the filtration behavior of eight iron ore concentrates.

Explosions in underground mining due to methane gas have been the leading cause of incidents and fatalities in the mining industry. The main objective of this research is to develop a forecasting methodology for methane gas emissions based on time series analysis. Methane time series data were retrieved from atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) of three underground coal mines in the United States. The AMS data were preprocessed and statistically evaluated to explore the potential autocorrelation of methane gas. It was concluded that the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) time series model used in the one-step-ahead forecasting mode provides accurate estimates that match the increase or decrease of the methane gas emission data.

Long before recorded history, man began to dig into the earth's crust in a never ending search for useful materials. It is well known that more than half of the earth's crust is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known as silica. Silica and silica-containing material have a great many uses in modern society. This material, however, is potentially an extreme health hazard. Silicosis: Not a New Disease Centuries before the Christian Era, Hippocrates wrote of a lung disease common to those who mined in hard rock. He was obviously describing silicosis. It is also apparent from ancient writings that the Egyptians were aware of this malady. Dioscorides also wrote on this subject in the fifth century B.C. It is undoubtedly the oldest and best studied of the occupational lung diseases. Silicosis was certainly described by Agricola in his De Re Metallica published in 1556. Here he described lung disease among hard-rock miners. The original document was written in Latin and then translated in 1912 by Hoover and Hoover. One of these translators was Herbert L. Hoover, a former US president who once made his living as a mining engineer. More recently, there are numerous references in medical literature in the 19th and 20th centuries relating silica exposure to silicosis. There are specific references to mining in hard rock, as well as to sandblasting and a host of other industrial exposures. In 1919, Winslow described standards for measuring the efficiency of exhaust systems in polishing shops using sandblasting. These standards were equally applicable in the mining industry. As early as 1920, Winslow explored the efficiency of certain devices used to protect sand-blasters against the dust hazard. These devices were equally applicable in the hard-rock mining industry. The medical community recognized the silica health hazard in the early 1900s. Middleton described the illness in the British Medical Journal in 1929. He noted the danger to health at that time. D. Hunter mentions in his book, The Diseases of Occupations (1969), the monumental work of Merryweather in 1936, in which he surveyed the silicosis risk in Great Britain. He showed statistically that the average employment length of sandblasters who ultimately died of silicosis was 10.3 years, compared to 40.1 years for all fatal cases, irrespective of occupation. Sandblasting and hard-rock mining and drilling, obviously, are very hazardous occupations. Weil and Zisking of Tulane University wrote in 1975 that "it was known as early as 1935 that the course of silicosis is much more rapid in sandblasters than in miners or foundry workers. This can be explained by the fact that sandblasters are exposed to an almost pure siliceous dust containing high concentrations of respirable particles within the range of 1 to 3 micron size." Protecting the Worker The medical community recognized in the early 1900s the need for proper protective equipment for all of those who worked with siliceous materials. Middleton, writing in 1929, said: "The worker is then protected by a close fitting helmet with an air feed, much as in the case of an underwater diver. In spite of these precautions, cases of silicosis among sandblasters are being met with today. It is a matter for serious consideration whether a substitute, such as steel or iron grit, could not be used to replace the siliceous grit as the abrading material." C. E. A. The stockpiling and reclaiming of bulk materials can be a challenging task for engineers seeking the optimum solution for plant needs, reliability, and at lowest unit cost. The objective of this paper will be to expose advantages, disadvantages and limitations of many storage and reclaiming systems to the responsible engineer and management. The paper will emphasize the practical aspect of stockpiling and reclaiming methods. Many valuable and interesting papers are available dealing with the theoretical viewpoint and application of a particular manufacturer's machine. Several of these are mentioned in the bibliography. As many practical parameters as possible will be given. After twenty years in the field of designing and selling bulk materials handling systems, the needs of the user and the plant are recognized and reasonably understood. This paper cannot give solutions to all problems In this vast field but will stress practical applications and examples of various installations. The evolution of advancements in materials handling is based upon not only technological innovations, but learning from many experiences of others and utilizing them as stepping stones to improved installations.

As development in underground coal mines progresses away from the critical components of the ventilation system, including the main fans and ventilation shafts, resistance within the system is markedly increased. This results in higher pressure and flow requirements from the main fan(s) to maintain adequate face ventilation. Upgrades to the primary ventilation system are often required. The use of booster fans underground is a potentially practical alternative to the addition of shafts and surface fans. This study presents simulations of the use of booster fans in two underground ventilation scenarios, one longwall and one room-and-pillar. The booster fan effects on the power requirements of the ventilation systems are evaluated.

The success of steep slope (>20°) contour mining depends on many factors. Most important is the selection of the mining method that best suits the premining site conditions environmentally and economically. These conditions can be divided into three categories: • Geometric conditions - machine limitations, slope stability restrictions, erosion capacity; • Physical conditions - material properties, rock strengths, ability to dig, driving surfaces; and • Chemical conditions - acid-base relationships, blending or selective placement of overburden. This article incorporates these conditions by conceptually modeling compliance-oriented contour mining methods, particularly haulback methods, using the combined front-end loader (FEL)/ truck, tractor/scraper, and FEL-truck and scraper. Engineering analyses, including machine selection, sequencing, ease of varying production rates, slope requirements (for stability and running surfaces) and drainage requirements can be performed after the geometric constraints dictated by in situ conditions and regulatory requirements have been conceptualized. Once all generalized geometries have been established, reduction to idealized, three-dimensional views is achieved. These are then reduced to two-dimensional symbolic models, mainly plan views but also elevations and sections. Equipment activities and operations are then conveniently overlayed. Without this simple, two-dimensional reduction, technology transfer remains awkward and non-analytical.

This paper presents the details of the Bad Bergzabern tunnel project. This tunnel is the main part of the B427 federal road bypass, intended to improve the regional traffic infrastructure and to reduce the traffic load in the historic city centre of the health resort Bad Bergzabern. Located in the south-western part of Germany, the project area is situated at the eastern margin of the so-called Palatinate Forest, a low mountain region of mainly triassic sediments with a complex and variable geological history. The German federal government, represented by the office of mobility of Rhineland- Palatinate, awarded the contract to BeMo Tunnelling, a specialized Tunnelling company with a long history of innovation and success in NATM tunnelling. The contract includes the construction of two separate tubes with a length of approximately 1,44 km (0.9 mi)—the road (main) tunnel with a cross section of 101 m2 (1,090 sq ft) and a parallel rescue tunnel with a cross section of ca. 23 m2 (250 sq ft.) Both are connected by six cross passages. Tunnels and cross passages are excavated according to the principles of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). Due to BeMo Tunnelling’s technical expertise and capabilities, the project team was able to engineer a speed-up concept that saves money and time for the construction team and client. This paper presents the innovative approach BeMo Tunnelling made to optimize the execution of the tunnelling works and the challenges the project team is facing with regard to a complicated geological situation, countermeasures against an increasing effect of climate change and volatile prices for construction materials.

Despite further declines in production for some producers, 1986 proved to be a landmark year for the asbestos industry. The key event was the adoption of The Asbestos Convention by the Inter- national Labour Organization (ILO) and its 150 member countries. The document, entitled "Safety in the Use of Asbestos", reaffirms the international consensus on the "controlled-use" approach to chrysotile asbestos regulation. The decision of the ILO has come at a critical point in time. It represents a major turning point and provides an important building block for the long term future of the asbestos industry.

Impregilo/SA Healy JV recently completed this Project using the first slurry shield TBM’s in the United States. The Project used two TBM’s to mine 18,000 feet in sands, gravels, and silty alluvial materials under the Willamette River and downtown Portland, Oregon. This paper discusses alignment and geological conditions, equipment selection and plant setup, and tunnel excavation means and methods, parameters, and results. Extensive hyperbaric operations were required and will also be discussed.

This paper evaluates the effectiveness of similitude theory in predicting the draft of a rubber tire loader’s bucket during initial penetration. The work uses 1:16 and 1:8 scale models of an 18-t capacity load haul dump, scaled with the Buckingham Pi Theorem, to evaluate the prediction of draft and penetration under different operating and different dynamic conditions. The authors hypothesize that the observed relationships between draft and longitudinal penetration and the operating and dynamic conditions will hold true for an upscaled model. Similarly, the authors hypothesized that the results of experiments conducted with the smaller scaled model should predict the draft on an upscaled model. The results show that the relationships between draft and longitudinal penetration and operating and dynamic parameters are similar for both scaled models. Similarly, the draft on the upscaled model, predicted by using the experimental results of the small model, is similar to the measured draft on the upscaled model. The mean difference between the two is 1.71 N with 95% confidence interval of [-3.51, 6.93], which is very good given the average draft is approximately 330 N. Thus, the work indicates that both hypotheses are true for draft. However, the work shows that scaling muck pile particle sizes using the Buckingham Pi Theorem is not adequate to ensure good predictions of penetration. This work provides insights that will help design engineers to acquire useful data on scaled models and use it for various analyses on heavy machinery.

An exercise in review — Begin by reviewing original equipment manufacturer (OEM) recommendations regarding servicing and maintenance intervals for each part of the equipment, especially the engine. In May of 1996, Twentymile Coal Co. began Longwall mining in the Foidel Creek Mine's East Mine District. These Longwall panels are some of the longest in the world (5.48 km/18,000 ft) with very difficult and challenging geometry. The conveyance system is 1,800 mm (72 in) wide, has a 4,500 mtph (5,000 stph) capacity and employs multiple tripper drives. The trippers include traditional powering designs as well as unique regeneration and braking designs. Several components were developed specifically for this application including a mobile tail brake. Control algorithms were carefully developed and tested via computer modeling. A world production record was achieved in the third month of operation and over 1 million tons were mined in June 1997.
