Slurry walls, also known as diaphragm walls, are commonly used as temporary and/ or permanent support of excavation for construction of shafts in soft ground. Through case history, this paper demonstrates economical benefits of disregarding long-term structural contribution of the slurry walls particularly in severe environmental condition. In addition, for temporary slurry wall shaft systems, possibility of using steel fiber, synthetic fiber or additives in lieu of temperature/shrinkage reinforcement is discussed with detailed analysis. Finally, the paper will be concluded by introducing unreinforced slurry wall shaft system using newly developed/patented concrete additive.

The Technology Application Center, in conjunction with the U.S. Bureau of Mines Liaison Program, is studying the use of Landsat data for the monitoring of coal surface mine reclamation activities. Landsat may provide sufficient information to reduce the number of on-site inspections now required. The focus of the project has been the Navajo Coal Mine located in north- western New Mexico and operated by Utah International, Inc. On October 15, 1977, a field team recorded spectral measurements at the mine during the time of Landsat's overpass and a corresponding aerial photographic flight. Training sets were selected from the ground and aircraft data representing vegetated, graded, ungraded and natural environments. A supervised classification of the data was performed by the Stanford University Remote Sensing Laboratory then correlated to aerial photos and mine maps. The results, to date, have been very encouraging.

Secondary use of mined-out space in underground limestone quarries is emerging in the Kansas City area where abandoned quarry sites are being renovated into warehouses, factories, and offices. Mining techniques, ceiling heights, and pillar distribution are being altered as planning for the secondary use of mined-out space is combined with the quarrying process. Even the historic urban- quarry land use conflict invites a reappraisal in that this development provides a potential resolution of the problem. Mutual subsidization by dual rock and space interest is changing the economics of rock production. A city is much more than a surficial adjunct superimposed upon the topography of an area. Its development and growth are deeply rooted in the resources, benefits and problems of its underlying geology. The environmental geologist must address himself to more than the quality of a particular resource. He must comprehensively relate resource extraction and processing with the urban emphasis of optimal use which favors long term usage of land over one time economic ventures. Limestone quarrying, closely allied with the growth of many cities, has commonly left a series of scarred landscapes in the path of the burgeoning metropolis. These abandoned quarry sites are barriers to orderly city growth and fail to serve the people as useful and taxable land. Where quarries are functional, supplying the city with needed growth minerals, problems of blasting damage, noise, and dust exist. Technology faces the challenge of making mineral production and processing good neighbors to the urban market they serve. Continued growth of cities may require more efficient use of space below as well as above the surface optimizing land usage so that long term economic benefits may be reflected in improved mining methods.

Innovation plays a critical role in the mining industry as a tool to improve the efficiency of its processes, to reduce costs, but also to meet the increasing social and environmental concerns among communities and authorities. Technological progress has also been crucial to allow the exploitation of new deposits in more complex scenarios: lower ore grades, extreme weather conditions, deeper deposits, harder rock mass, and high-stress environments. This paper discusses the importance of innovation for the mining industry and describes the mechanisms by which it is carried out. It includes a review of the drivers and actors involved and current trends. The digital transformation process that the industry is going through is analyzed, along with other relevant trends that are likely to shape the mining of the future. Additionally, a case study is presented to illustrate the technical and economic implications of developing a disruptive innovation project.

Pillar collapses are events that due to their severe consequences can be classified as high risk. The design of pillars in underground room-and-pillar operations should migrate to risk-based design approaches. The authors of this work proposed a risk-based pillar design methodology that integrates stochastic discrete element modeling for pillar strength estimation, and stochastic finite volume modeling (FVM) for stress estimation. This paper focuses on the stochastic FVM component for stress estimation. The mining and geomechanical aspects of a case study mine (CSM) are described and pillar stresses are estimated by using three approaches: (1) analytical solutions, (2) 2D finite element modeling, and (3) 3D finite volume modeling. This operation extracts a 30° dipping deposit, which makes current underground stone mine design guidelines inapplicable for this CSM. This work compares results from each stress estimation approach and discusses uses the point estimate method as a simplified stochastic approach to evaluate the effect of rock mass elastic properties variability on pillar stress distribution. Results from this work show that the three estimation approaches lead to different estimations, possibly, due to the wide range of assumptions each estimation approach considers. It was also determined that the horizontal to vertical stress ratio has a significant impact on pillar stress magnitude. Therefore, it is recommended to perform in situ stress measurements, or assume worst-case-scenario values to account and reduce uncertainty due to this parameter. The stochastic stress estimation approach used in this paper provides results that can integrate a risk-based pillar design framework.

De Beers? Finsch diamond mine began operation in the 1960s as a surface project using the latest technology available. During the 1990s, the operation, located about 160 km (100 miles) west of Kimberley, South Africa, began its move as an underground mine. The earlier stages (Blocks 1, 2 and 3) of underground work at Finsch used open stope mining methods, also using the latest in technology. The mine began developing Block 4 in 2004. How-ever, studies on this level showed that block caving was a more efficient mining method than open stoping. It was during those studies that De Beers determined that Block 4 would be a good candidate for testing Sandvik?s automated truck haulage technology.

INTRODUCTION Before a mine is planned in detail, a preliminary analysis is often conducted. This preplanning permits the mining engineer to make a rapid assessment as to whether or not a particular mining property warrants further consideration. In fact, a properly conducted preplanning phase can come within 10% to 20% of the actual results, thereby saving the mining engineer valuable time before committing himself to a fine-tuned analysis. The questions to be answered by mine preplanning are (1) What will be the operating conditions for the mine? and (2) How long will it take to complete the project? To answer these questions, calculations dealing with reserve estimation, production planning, man- power planning, and project scheduling are conducted. The following sections discuss these various phases of mine preplanning in greater detail. RESERVE ESTIMATION The estimation of the various characteristics of a reserve, such as quantity, grade, and thickness, is an ongoing process throughout the life of a mining venture. However, the reserve-estimation phase of mine planning is more closely associated with the preplanning phase. There are many different techniques employed in reserve estimation of solid mineral deposits; variations among them are introduced because of such considerations as ease of application or level of accuracy. In any event, each technique is developed in the following manner: (1) the mineral body is represented pictorially and then subdivided into blocks related to one or more samples of exploration data, (2) the area and volume of each block is determined, (3) the volumes are converted to representative tonnages (or, for example, grades), and (4) the results are tabulated. To illustrate this procedure, the polygonal (area-of- influence) technique will be presented due to its ease of application, flexibility in dealing with different deposits, and general acceptance. The polygonal method assumes that all characteristics of a mineral body extend halfway between a point of observation and any other point of observation. The explored portion of the mineral body is represented by polygonal prisms whose depths relate to the characteristic in question (grade, thickness, etc.) and whose plane bases relate to the area of influence of each point of observation (drill hole, etc.) as shown in Fig. 1. The polygons must be constructed in a definite order, usually clockwise and from the periphery to the center of the deposit. Table 1 can then be used to calculate the characteristics in question. Since, by definition, the polygonal method assumes that the characteristics of a mineral body extend half- way between points of observation, it becomes readily apparent that the evaluation of a vertical-drill hole exploration program requires that the sides of the polygons be formed by the intersection of perpendicular bisectors (Fig. 2). Figs. 3 and 4 show correct and incorrect construction of the polygons. The criterion for correct construction of the polygons is that all points within a particular polygon must be closer to its rallying point than those located in any other polygon. This is clearly not the case for certain points that are located in the polygon containing rallying point B in Fig. 4. Although this method can be used where the drill holes are irregularly spaced, calculations become less tedious when a square net (Fig. 5) or a chessboard (Fig. 6) grid is adopted. The numbers shown in Figs. 5 and 6 represent the relative weight for each of the shaded areas. In general, the greater the number of polygons, the more continuous the mineral body, and the more regular the grid, then the more accurate the computations will be. PRODUCTION PLANNING Before an acceptable evaluation of the production potential of a mine can be determined, a thorough exploration program should be conducted. It seems obvious that the nature and properties of the deposit and adjacent strata, the presence of impurities, and other mining conditions should be adequately determined prior to production planning and equipment selection. The lack of sufficiently detailed knowledge of the many mining parameters has led to the failure of numerous operations. For example, targeted production tonnages and equipment sizes for a coal mine are intimately related to the seam thickness. Needless to say the quality of information that is gathered from an exploration program can have a tremendous impact on the production plan. Sources of sulfur have varied based on technology and societal needs. It has been mined in its elemental form for centuries. Twentieth century technology brought thermal mining (Frasch, 1894) to the forefront of sulfur extraction. Then, by the 1980s, petroleum processing generated almost 40 percent of the 50 Mt (55million st) of sulfur in all forms (SAF) produced in the world. Metals processing (the reclamation of effluent gas by various means as “sulfur in other forms,” or SOF) followed at 30 percent of all sulfur values produced and then Frasch at 22 percent. Petroleum and gas processing now generate most of the elemental sulfur produced in the world. Single Two Frasch mines remain, one each in Iraq and Poland. Conventional mining of small to insignificant volumes also survives in Russia, Latin America and Indonesia. The volume of “recovered” sulfur (the name commonly given by the industry to hydrocarbon-derived material) generated will increase faster than energy consumption as oil and gas with greater amounts of sulfur are used and environmental restrictions on the sulfur content of the fuel consumed become more stringent.

This paper discusses the geotechnical instrumentation program on the Central Artery/Tunnel Project, in Boston, Massachusetts. Particular attention is given to a state of the art Graphic Information System (GIS) application which has been developed for rapid analyses and reporting of data. This application will see extensive use during the ongoing complex downtown tunnel construction. The excavations in soft ground require cuts of up to 120 feet deep and 250 feet wide. Deformation and groundwater monitoring instruments have been installed to monitor the stability of the excavation support systems and the abutting buildings. The use of this application is illustrated with an example from an ongoing contract.

Mining Ventures are considered as high risk projects and therefore managing the risks is inevitable. Risk assessment is an important part of the complex process of risk management, hence applying appropriated and practical methods for ranking the risks associated with projects, can help to perform a better risk management. In this research the applicability of using Techniques for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method for risk ranking in an underground mine, extracting by block caving method, was studied. Via this method, the risk associated with reserve estimation ranked as the first while in conventional method (P-I Matrix method) located in the sixteenth. Also there were significant differences in ranks of the other risks. Considering the more criteria, with different weights, in comparison with conventional methods, the results comprised from TOPSIS method are more reliable. By implementing this method risks are ranked better and more realistic and consequently then will be managed more efficient.

The attapulgite industry saw a year of solid growth after a weaker 2003. Demand was up between 5 percent and 6 percent driven by almost all of the key markets. Construction continued to show record new housing demand, assisted by continued low interest rates. That drove strong growth in construction related markets like coatings, tape joint compounds and other construction materials applications. The agricultural markets rebounded modestly to increase sales for suspension fertilizers, animal feeds and pesticide carriers. Oil drilling also showed strong growth due to high oil and gas prices. Sales to molecular sieve applications grew due to petrochemical and construction demand. The export markets were assisted by further depreciation of the dollar. The only weak area was in nonagricultural granular sorbents, where other sorbent materials continued to dominate.

Materials demands by the advancing process technologies, desire for higher performance and durability, and improved efficiency in combustion processes, such as applications in heat engines, heat exchanges, and batteries have added to the driving force fueling R&D efforts for the development of components with the combined characteristics of metals and non-metals. These new materials involve refined and specialized microstructures that can lead to improvements in the performance characteristics and durability new technological applications require. Fabrication and sintering methods, once believed to be sufficient, alone, have been found to be inadequate in the manufacture of such advanced components. Realization of the importance of the starting powders has led to efforts to produce materials of ultrahigh purity and ultrafine particle size with very narrow particle size distributions. Such powder characteristics are essential for the fabrication of components with high density and with the desired mechanical, electrical, or magnetic properties called for by the specific application. Novel ultrafine and ultrapure powder preparation techniques are discussed and effects of impurities on the powder characteristics, particle size and morphology, sintering behavior and properties of the finished product are elucidated.

Introduction Elevated zinc concentrations are observed in groundwater within alluvium adjacent to Silver Creek east of Park City, Utah. The study area is located in a small valley one and one-half miles northeast of Park City, Utah in Summit County, Utah (Figure 1). Although surface water concentrations in Silver Creek are typically less than 1 mg/l, groundwater concentrations have been measured as high as 85 mg/l in a near neutral pH environment. The elevated zinc concentrations in groundwater result from several factors including: (1) dissolution of zinc from tailings exposed at the surface and within the alluvium, (2) oxidizing conditions created by surface/ground-water exchange, and (3) ideal geochemical conditions for the dissolution of zinc-containing minerals. These ideal conditions include readily soluble minerals, available anions for complexation, and lack of available surface adsorption sites.

On Nov 1, 2007 House Resolution 2262 ? The Hardrock Mining and Reclamation Act of 2007 ? was passed by the U.S. House by a vote of 244-166. HR-2262, among other things, would impose a 4-per-cent royalty on existing mines with commercial production and an 8-percent gross royalty on all new claims. Not surprisingly, this possible new law was one of the hottest topics of discussion at the Northwest Mining Association?s conference that this year returned to Spokane, WA for its 113th annual meeting on Dec. 3-7. More than 1,800 delegates attended the conference that was held under the banner theme of ?Mining ?. For today and tomorrow.? Northwest Mining Association executive director Laura Skaer was one of many speakers during the three-day conference to respond to the threat to the industry posed by HR-2262 with a presentation titled ?Potential changes to the 1872 Mining Law.? In the presentation that she first unveiled at the Alaska Miners Association?s convention and trade show on Nov. 8, Skaer laid out a comprehensive list of problems with HR-2262. In addition to the association?s obvious concerns about the proposed royalty, Skaer noted that the bill includes a mine veto provision that would allow the Secretary of the Interior the authority to deny an operations permit to a project if the secretary determines that the operation would cause undue degradation to public lands and resources. Potential massive withdrawals from mineral entry are also included in HR-2262. Among the lands that could be off limits to miners under HR-2262 are wilderness study areas, areas of environmental concern and 23.6 hm2 (58.5 million acres) identified as Roadless Rule. States, political subdivisions and Indian Tribes would also have more authority to withdraw lands, she said. To combat the proposed changes, Skaer made 10 trips to Washington D.C. on behalf of NWMA members in 2007. In her presentation at the annual meeting, she also objected to provisions that include no life-of-mine permits and uncertain permit renewals and new and duplicative environmental standards that she said are vague, ambiguous and inconsistent with current federal and state environmental laws. Rip van Winkle is back ? and he?s meaner than ever.?

Constructing tunnels in congested urban areas requires tunnels to be placed closer together and with less cover than was previously necessary. Contract CQ031 of New York?s East Side Access project will construct four six-meter diameter bored tunnels in a three-up one-down ?T? configuration, with less than three meters of soil between the tunnels. Mixed-face rock and glacial till conditions with a high ground water table will be encountered under active railroad yards. The tunnels will also pass beneath the busiest railroad interlocking in North America with cover as shallow as three meters. This paper discusses the challenges of designing segmentally lined tunnels for these conditions.

Geologic resource assessments describe the location, general characteristics, and estimated volumes of resources, whether in-situ or technically recoverable. Such compilations are only an initial step in economic resource evaluation. Forecasts that assume that resources that exist in nature can be commercially produced as needed ignore economic constraints. This paper identifies, by example, the salient features of a geologic assessment that will assure its usefulness for economic analysis. These features are demonstrated with examples of coal resource assessments and coal bed gas assessments.

The main electrophysical properties, i.e., dielectric constant and electrical conductivity, of pure calcite, quartz and wollastonite mineral samples were measured and their triboelectric charge attributes were investigated by contacting minerals particles with different tribochargers made from different materials. In addition the energetic work function values for mineral samples were estimated due to their acquisition charge. Besides, the behaviour of triboelectrically charged of different particle size fractions of mineral samples were inferred. Finally an attempt were made to translate the findings from single mineral systems to a real carbonate ore. The results exposed good prospects to beneficate the examined minerals by triboelectric separation.

Evaluation of the stability of a structure under given boundary conditions requires accurate knowledge of the state of stress as well as the mechanism of failure at the critical state of stress. This paper represents a part of the research done by N. K. Bohidar during 1965-1968 for his Ph. D. research in Mining Engineering at the University of Utah. It summarizes the determination of internal stress and failure phenomena around cylindrical openings in viscoelastic media subjected to lateral restraint and vertical uniaxial load. The conditions of lateral restraint and viscoelastic nature of the media represent conditions associated with subsurface openings in rocks. The financial assistance provided to the project from the University of Utah Research (Uniform School Fund), W. C. Browning Scholarship Fund, Earth Science Research Fund, and D. C. Ventiflex is a flexible ventilation duct system with a global market within mine and tunnel ventilation. The system is distributed in a wide range of qualities and dimensions. It is very important that ventilation systems are designed correctly in mines and tunnels. An incorrectly dimensioned system might result in bad air quality and too high costs. The objective of this study has been to assess some important design parameters for ventiflex comprising the friction loss factor for the duct wall itself, as well as the shock loss factors and the leakage factors for the different couplings systems. This has been obtained by carrying out a large scale experimental program on ducts with all the three different couplings: Velcro, zip and steel-ring. Pressure profiles and air flow rates have been measured, and based on these data the different factors have been calculated. The following results have been obtained: A friction factor l = 0,012 (K = 10) for the duct wall, a shock loss factor z = 0,0125 for velcro- and zip couplings, a shock loss factor z = 0,005 for steel-ring couplings, and a leakage factor f* = 0 mm2/m2 for all three coupling types. The latter result proves that no leakage is possible for a correctly installed duct with proper alignment. The results also confirm that ventiflex complies with class S, or better, according to the SIA-norm. However, whether ventiflex should be designed as class S, A or B according to the SIA-norm, depends on the particular application.

Treated effluent from the Clean Water Coalition (CWC) member agencies is currently discharged at an annual average rate of 6,570 l/s into the Las Vegas Wash, and is increasing annually. As the effluent flow increases, the nutrient loading of the treated effluent will approach the maximum limits allowed under the current regulations. To manage this flow while maintaining water quality in Lake Mead, the CWC is implementing a 44-km-long conveyance system. This paper discusses the geological and geotechnical aspects of the 13.4-km-long tunneled section through the River Mountains and their effect on design. The tunnel alignment traverses a heterogeneous package of volcanic and sedimentary rocks exhibiting widely variable rock conditions.
