In this study, potassium ferrocyanide, a non-toxic cyanide precursor in dark and diffuse reflection environments, was applied as a reagent for the leaching of gold. The free cyanide ions were gradually released from the potassium ferrocyanide solution under the ultraviolet light. Orthogonal leaching experiments were performed in gold ore to analyse the effect of solution pH, potassium ferrocyanide dosage, and temperature in potassium ferrocyanide solution system under UV light. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to explore the role of potassium ferrocyanide in gold leaching, Optimised results showed that the gold recovery reached 67.74% in a high-alkaline environment at a 12.6 pH, 3.8 kg/t potassium ferrocyanide dosage, 62°C, and irradiance of 10mW/cm-2. The gold leaching kinetics was monitored by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) of potassium ferrocyanide solution. The results indicate that the gold extraction process consists of two processes: adsorption and leaching, and a rigid adsorption layer formed on the reaction surface. Furthermore, Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of the gold sensor surface after leaching reaction showed that -C≡N appears on the gold sensor surface, and the gold is oxidised to form AuCN complexes. The inaccurately drilled blastholes from the planned locations cause changes in the spatial distribution of explosive energy; some areas of the blast may receive a surplus of explosive energy, while others see a reduction. This results in less uniform fragmentation, reduces the efficiency of mining operations and increases costs. Additionally, it can lead to slope stability issues, flyrock, and uneven benches. To mitigate these problems, this study attempts to reduce differences in the explosive energy distribution (EED) through an optimization approach that adjusts the height of explosive columns in blastholes. Two optimization algorithms, the Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Tabu Search (TS), are tested. The latter is preferred for its local search neighbourhood strategy that gives superior computation times. Applications on different blast patterns result in improvements of 0.53–1.54%, or 2.14–3.94% when only the affected blocks are considered.

"The decreasing availability of resources amenable to surface operations has led to increasing numbers of underground mines, with trends indicating this will continue into the future. As a result, there is a need for additional optimization processes and techniques for underground mines, with many analogous methods having already been developed for surface mining. Current methods for design and optimization of stope boundary selection and scheduling mainly involve heuristic methods which focus on a single lever. Individual optimality may be approached, but globally optimal results can be obtained only by an integrated, rigorous approach. In this paper we review previous methodologies for stope boundary selection and medium- to long-term scheduling and highlight the need for an integrated approach. Previous integrated approaches are reviewed and an improved modelling system proposed for shorter solution times and greater applicability to mining situations. Randomly generated data-sets for gold-copper mineralization are used to investigate the model performance, describing solution time as a function of data complexity.IntroductionThe increasing need for mineral resources is driving an increase in underground mines. Lower grade mineralization with larger amounts of overburden is becoming economically viable due to technological advances; however, the software and tools available for strategic underground mine planning are not well developed. Advances in the methods used to determine underground layouts and scheduling must occur to ensure underground mining is as optimized as open pit operations, as underground mining involves many more technical restrictions.The process of determining stope boundaries and scheduling is an example of an aspect of underground mining amenable to optimization (Topal and Sens, 2010). The current industry standard for medium- and long-term planning for sublevel stoping (SLS) is to exclusively determine stope outlines and then determine an appropriate sequence and schedule accordingly. This process violates the concept of optimality as integrating the constraints imposed by pre-determining stope outlines does not allow for considerations in scheduling to influence boundary planning (Ataee-Pour, 2005). An integrated planning process that combines both stope outlines and scheduling would approach the optimal solution and hence generate more value for operations. This investigation specifically deals with the underground sublevel stoping (SLS). Other underground mining methods such as block caving, sublevel caving, and room and pillar mining have unique characteristics and therefore require specific stope boundary/production scheduling considerations."

"The start of mining operations often raises serious financial problems. In marginal cases promoters frequently demand financial aid from governments.In the past, the financial assistance has taken the form of gifts, procurement contracts, etc., but aid in such form has been severely criticized. A new formula has been developed to provide a more equitable distribution of the revenues accruing to the government and to private capital.The benefits to these two parties have been evaluated in an hypothetical case and compared in terms of internal rates of return on their investment, their shares of the undiscounted cash flows and their primary profits.The method based on the non-zero sum game theory provides a means for suggesting the lowest feasible annual production and the optimal sum contributed by the government in the form of outright gift, equity capital and convertible bonds. Other financial hypotheses can also be optimized by the computerized analysis."

Zimbabwe hosts a varied array of coloured gemstones. With the exception of emerald deposits and several world-class pegmatites, few of the gemstone occurrences have received detailed attention from the scientific or mineral exploration communities. In the present contribution we summarize the status of knowledge of the gemstone deposits and occurrences in Zimbabwe, paying particular attention to the geological settings in which they were formed. Synthesis of this regional geological approach reveals that there may be significant exploration potential for further gemstone occurrences, particularly in the extensive pegmatite fields and in Al-enriched orogenic belts that have undergone greenschist to granulite facies metamorphism. Further socio-economic and developmental initiatives will aid in optimizing the value generation from this important sub-sector.

This paper describes the educational philosophy behind the development and summarises other salient features of the Program. Visit to the Datsun Nissan Company's body pressing and assembly plant at Rosslyn, Pretoria, and the Claremont-Danville Tunnel on 27th February, 1970. The excursion arranged for the 27th February to the Datsun Nissan motor car assembly plant at Rosslyn, near Pretoria, in the morning and the Claremont-Danville tunnel in the afternoon was well supported by some 43 members. The visitors were met at the factory by Mr Rademeyer, the Industrial Relations Manager, and members of his staff and were taken to the artisan training centre for light refreshments. There is a well-equipped training section with an air-conditioned lecture hall; we were told that such training facilities were important because of the cosmopolitan nature of the artisan staff. The visitors were divided into small parties and taken to the tool die and jig-making section, which is perhaps the key department for a factory of this nature. There the many dies for the presses in the body pressing section, as well as the complicated jigs for body welding are made. The technique for making the castings for the dies is interesting. A polystyrene model of the casting is embedded in moulding sand. In a neighbouring foundry molten metal is pressed into the headers and burns away the polystyrene, which leaves no residue, and this exactly fills the space occupied by the model. This rough casting is then machined in large copying machines (costing as much as Rl80 000). An exact plastic model of the surface of the pressing required, set up in juxtaposition to this casting is traversed by a master stylus which operates the slave milling cutter, thereby machining the surface to close tolerances. The machined casting is cleaned up by hand and finally finished in large spotting machines, using a blue dye to show up high spots, to the fine degree of accuracy required. The body pressing section was next visited. There the large number of pressed parts which make up a vehicle body are pressed out of special deep drawing steel plate. Some of the largest presses were capable of applying a pressure of 1 200 tons and cost as much as Rl85 000 each. The visitors then followed through to the assembly section where jigs are used to hold together the many pressings, which are then spot welded into body frames. The frames go to an assembly line where they are finished to the stage for painting. The continuous crawl painting assembly line carries the frames through all the stages of prime coating with zinc phosphate sprayed on in a tunnel, followed by immersion of the lower parts in a priming bath, then drying and spray painting and baking in tunnels. The body frames, after painting, join another assembly line, where the doors, upholstery and many fittings are attached. After this stage the completed bodies are lowered onto and attached to the chassis units which are largely assembled from imported parts (engines, transmission units, etc.). From the end of the line the completed cars are driven off to the trial track and then pass through a tunnel with powerful water sprays to detect leaks in the body work. The proportion of locally made parts is just on 45 per cent. An interesting aspect of the assembly organization is that, of the 140 or 160 cars completed each day there may be included some of each of the Datsun model as well as some Renault and Alfa Romeo models models which are assembled by this company. The change from one model to another several times a day does not present any difficulty to the organization. Each section of the assembly plant 'buys' the units from the preceeding section and 'sells' to the succeeding section. This means that the responsibility of each section ends when the unit is sold to the next section. The cost of repairing any faults found subsequently is charged to the section where it is found, which puts a powerful emphasis on meticulous inspections between sections to safeguard their costs. After the tour the parties assembled at the lecture hall where a lavish cold buffet luncheon was provided by the company. After luncheon Mr A. R. C. Fowler, on behalf of the Institute, thanked the Managing Director, Mr W. J. Wilson and his staff for this most interesting and well organized visit. The party then left for the Claremont-Danville tunnel. The tunnel is being driven by General Mining Federale Kontrakteurs through the Daspoort Range, Pretoria, to link the suburbs of Danville, near Iscor, and Claremont, which at present can only be reached by a nine mile detour. It is estimated that some 6000 vehicles per day will use the tunnel. Before entering the tunnel a short talk was given by Mr Ross who is in charge of operations. This paper presents current work on the development and use of stereovision for underground mining. Information on the calibration of the cameras and the feature-matching algorithm are presented. This system uses an intensity-based approach that evaluated correspondences along the epipolar line. Once features have been identified and their distance from the cameras computed, a three-dimensional map of the muck pile is developed. The approach used here uses a ray-tracing algorithm. This approach provides an uncertainty measure along with the elevation. A discussion of the use of this modelling information in the control of the LHD is included. This note considers the most fundamental concepts of support design for deep underground openings and discusses them briefly in the context of tabular stoping and deep hard-rock tunnelling. It concludes that the conventional re-bar, mesh, and lacing methods that have been widely used in deep gold mines are quite inappropriate for the support of highly stressed tunnels. The following is suggested as the criterion for adequate dynamic support: the energy absorbed by a support unit (yielding through some acceptable limited displacement) should exceed the kinetic energy generated by the mass of rock that is intended to be retained by that unit.

The objectives of the present organizational structure of the Coal Division in respect of projects are listed, as are the requirements for effective functioning of this organization. The processes involved in strategic planning and in the identification. evaluation, and development of projects are described. The monitoring and control of capital as well as project construction and production management. are discussed. Finally, the important role of project work in the development of management is stated, and the necessity for the continual assessment of the effectiveness of the project organization is stressed.

An ERR-based methodology is presented for use in the re-assessment of the performance of stabilizing pillars, taking into account the effects of fracturing that can occur in pillar foundations under conditions of high stress. It is shown that the damage in the foundations of under-designed pillars can cause up to 30 per cent increases in ERR compared with the ERR for pillars with unfractured foundations. Despite this reduction in assessed performance, stabilizing pillars are still generally found to result in substantially lower ERR levels than alternative methods of reducing ERR, such as the use of stiff backfill or backfill ribs.

This paper describes detailed fractographic analyses of several specimens that had undergone corrosion-fatigue tests at high stress ratios in simulated pressurized water-reactor environments. The distribution and morphology of non-metallic manganese sulphide inclusions are shown to strongly affect the growth of environmentally assisted cracks (EAC), and certain features suggest that a hydrogen-assisted mechanism is responsible for the observed EAC growth. The incidence of transient EAC growth in isolated regions suggests that the critical conditions that trigger this type of growth are the 'right' local chemistry at the crack tips and imposed mechanical conditions.

In some mining situations, backfills are not only required to be free-standing but are also expected to provide hangingwall support. It may therefore be specified that the backfill withstand a certain calculated stress within a given time. Given the materials available, the choice of backfill composition is not always straightforward, and an approach to the evaluation of cemented tailings backfill is therefore proposed. The general use of such a method will greatly assist in both the scientific analysis of the material properties for industry-wide purposes of comparison and decision-making as regards the choice of fill.

"South African mining operations depend on the skilled professionals produced through the tertiary education sector. In geoscience courses at the University of the Witwatersrand, which lead into the mining sector, there has been a significant increase in student intake over the past 15 years. This increase has been characterized by a radical shift in demography: in classes where white male students once formed the majority, black female students are now in the majority. This demographic shift appears closely linked to policies addressing issues of social justice and transformation in post-apartheid South Africa. We document this change and consider the role played by employment equity legislation (as in the Mining Charter) and corporate social investment strategies in the mining industry, notably through bursaries offered to black female students. We also look at the changing needs of the industry, where the critical need for managerial skills, not just technical knowledge, is highlighted through data from surveys of past students and industry managers. Our findings indicate the need for a curriculum adjustment to meet these changing requirements, as well as more rigorous selection criteria for bursars than simply gender, race, and appropriate matric results. IntroductionThe South African economy has historically been linked to mining and the exploitation of mineral resources. South African mining operations are dependent on the professional labour that is produced through the tertiary education sector, with critical thinking, teamwork, and the art of negotiation having been identified as the crucial skills required for this industry (Sideropoulos, 2014). Over the past three decades the South African system of education has gone through a period of dysfunction that it is struggling to rectify (Maphai, 2014). This has impacted on the levels of academic preparedness of students applying for places in higher education. Concurrently, government and university policies have widened access to higher education in response to the need to address issues of social injustice and transformation related to South Africa’s history of apartheid. As a result, the number of students admitted to universities has increased dramatically. In the School of Geosciences at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), the increase in student numbers has been accompanied by a significant change in demographics: classrooms which in the past were dominated by white males have given way to classrooms in which black females are often in the majority. This demographic shift is related to legislation such as the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act and the Broadbased Socio-Economic Empowerment Charter, developed to reshape the socio-economic and equity frameworks of the country (Botha and Cronje, 2015). Requirements aimed at transformation in terms of management, skills development, and employment equity, together with corporate social investment (CSI) requirements, have resulted in bursaries being made available to attract students from designated groups, which in turn has increased the number of black students, and notably black female students, taking courses in geosciences. However, due to the economic downturn, instability in the mining industry has recently resulted in the downsizing of some mines, with international investors pulling out of South Africa. This instability resulted in devastating strikes across all sectors of the mining industry (Stewart, 2013) and in Marikana, an important platinum mining area, the strike culminated in a deadly shoot-out between miners and police. The resulting tensions spilled over into the gold mining sector, resulting in further strike action, shaft closures, and retrenchments. These challenges have implications not only for the mining industry in South Africa, but for the tertiary education providers whose graduates would have been absorbed into the mine-related workforce."

The increased adoption of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) may improve the productivity and costeffectiveness of remote sensing in the mining industry. This review’s objective is to enable stakeholders to identify possible application adoption, improvement, and innovation opportunities. The review merges a building block strategy and practical screening criteria to identify possible avenues of research to answer the review questions. After the screening process, 72 documents were included in the review. Papers were classified into four categories: exploration, development, exploitation, and reclamation. Fifteen applications were identified, the majority of which were in the exploration phase. The most often researched applications were topographic surveys, reclamation monitoring, and slope management. From the two UAV types identified, multi-rotor vehicles were the most favoured for all applications. From the eight remote sensing techniques identified, photogrammetry was the one most often used. Other techniques were limited because of complexity, cost, or the incompatibility of sensors and UAVs. The review was limited to published papers in academic journals. Future studies could aim to include empirical data on the latest UAV applications used in the mining industry.

The paper covers many literature reports of processes using nitrogenous species as an oxidant for processing refractory gold ores, especially development in the pretreatment of refractory gold minerals by nitric acid. These processes include the high-pressure and the atmospheric-pressure oxidation methods. High-pressure oxidation processes are difficult to carry out, because they require high-capital cost autoclaves. Atmospheric-pressure oxidation processes are easier to manipulate, but complete absorption and reuse of NOx is difficult or multiple-stage absorption must be established for its reuse. So, some new methods were developed, such as catalytically oxidizing technology of NOx to allow subsequent recovery of gold. Keywords: nitric acid; pretreatment; refractory gold

The Annual General Meeting of the Institute was held in Kelvin House, Johannesburg, on Wednesday, 26th August, 1970, at 4.15 p.m. Mr. J. K. E. Douglas (President) was in the Chair. There were also present sixty-three Fellows, thirty-five Members, one Graduate, eight Associates, five Students and nineteen Visitors, making a total of one hundred and thirty-two. The President declared the meeting open at 4.20 p.m. OBITUARIES The President: 'It is my sad duty to announce the deaths of the following members of the Institute. Dr J. A. Papenfus, Fellow, who joined the Institute in 1942 and passed away on the 28th of May, 1970. Mr D. G. Beadle, Fellow, who joined the Institute in 1946 and passed away on the 17th of June, 1970. Gentlemen, Derek Beadle was very well known in this Institute. His papers on dust will be remembered and, at the time of his untimely death, he was one of our assistant editors. As a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased and in sympathy with the bereaved, I would ask you to rise and observe a few moments' silence.' ANNUAL REPORTOFTHE COUNCILAND ACCOUNTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30th JUNE, 1970 The President: 'I now have pleasure in presenting to you, the Annual Report and Statement of Accounts for the year ended June, 1970. These have been handed to you this afternoon and, as is customary, I propose they be taken as read. Before moving their adoption, however, I would like to refer to some of the salient features, leaving as is usual, the task of dealing with the finances, to our Honorary Treasurer. It is encouraging that membership has continued to grow, and now stands at 1,613, an increase of 61 over last year's total. Your Council, however, is aware that there are still people in our mining and metallurgical industries, who could qualify for membership, but who have not yet joined the Institute. A drive to increase membership was accordingly organised, and members of Council were given the responsibility for campaigning in sections of industry, and for publicising the objectives and advantages of belonging to the Institute. Up to now there has not been much reaction to this campaign, but I hope we will see results in the coming year. At the same time, Council has recognised the need for change in the conduct of the Institute's affairs in order to meet the changing needs of our membership. Our members, both mining and metallurgical, are in the first place, geographically more widely dispersed than they used to be, and secondly, with the growth of the metallurgical industry, their technical interests are now more diversified. The Institute must cope with these changing needs if we are to continue to perform a useful function. The
