The safe use of a refrigerant or any substance depends on knowledge of its pertinent properties and conditions of use; therefore some of the properties of refrigerants that are related to life, fire, and explosion hazards are discussed herein. These data serve as a basis for suggested control measures in the use· of refrigerants. The properties of refrigerants may be broadly classified into three main groups: (1) Those important for refrigeration, (2) those significant from the standpoint of confining the refrigerant, and (3) those that become important if the refrigerant escapes from the :machine or container. The first group of properties, such as latent heat of vaporization, specific heat of vapor, specific heat of liquid, etc., is not considered to be directly related to safety and is not discussed here. The second group, those properties important in confining the refrigerants, has particular significance because· it relates to "built-in" safety. This group is emphasized because it is believed the soundest procedure in designing equipment is to give due consideration .to both the health and safety hazards likely to be associated with the equipment. Furthermore, the toxicity, fire, and explosion hazards are controlled as long as the refrigerant is confined. Some properties of this group are (1) stability, (2) corrosiveness, (3) boiling point, (4) pressure developed in the system, (5) warning odor or irritation, and (6) ease of detection. The third group includes such properties as toxicity (of compound and decomposition products), irritating action, and explosibility.

The Bureau of Mines has under development on a technical scale an electrolytic process for treating oxidized ores of zinc , using caustic soda as an electrolyte . Whereas the Bureau process can alternately make either solid zinc or zinc dust , the following paper , from the Ludwigshafen research laboratory of the well -known I. G. Farbenindustrie , A. G. , of Germany, deals only with production of zinc dust from sodium zincate solutions and may well serve as introduction to the subject for American metallurgists . The Bureau of Mines pioneered in the idea ; a study on laboratory scale by H. J. Morgan and 0. C. Ralston was made early in the First World War, and published in Transactions of the American Electrochemical Society . The Eckardt paper , translation of which follows , goes more thoroughly into the preparation of electrolytic zinc dust , and later publications of the Bureau of Mines will deal with broader details and application of the idea to treatment of lowgrade ores and metallurgical intermediates , which is the point where Eckardt left off . 4 The Eckardt report became available through operations of Field Information Agency , Technical ( FIAT ) of the Office of Military Government for Germany (US ) , which made bibliofilm copies of the files of internal technical reports of many of the German industrial establishments , Eckardt's report is dated April 1939 and was taken on FIAT Microfilm Reel MM 106 , frames 82-101 , which is on file as Publication Board Document 41411 in Office of Technical Services of the U. S. Department of Commerce , Washington , D, C , Eckardt points out that the normal source of zinc dust is the blue powder of the zinc retorts , which decreases in volume every year owing to technologic improvements in zinc smelting. Water has been commonly used as a collecting medium in many instruments employed in the sampling of dusty atmospheres in mines** add industrial plants, and for this purpose has much to recommend it, particularly the following factors:1.,Water is a very efficient dust collector.2.,Distilled water of great purity may be readily obtained at slight expense. The analytical error introduced by the extremely small amount of foreign matter in carefully distilled water is very small,3.,Water is a very convenient medium with which to work as all the analytical operations of diluting, aliquoting, and filtering are readily and speedily carried out. Water has therefore been used extensively in such instruments as the Palmer apparatus, the Greenburg-Smith impinger, and the dust collector recently described by Drinker, Thompson, and Fitchet. The Bureau of Mines has conducted investigations in many metal-mining districts of the country, determining of dust the nature and amount of dust present in working places, its effect the health of workers, and what precautions may be taken to decrease the hazard of exposure to dangerous dusts. The Bureau is therefore interested in any factor that affects the accuracy of dust sampling.

Etchants containing hexavalent chromium and sulfuric acid are used in a variety of surface-finishing operations. When the resultant spent solutions are discarded, substantial quantities of chromium are lost and pollution prob¬lems are created. To minimize the undesirable environmental effects while improving metal and minerals recycling technology, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research on a method for the economic inplant recycling of these waste etchants. Trivalent chromium, produced when the etchant reacts with a sub¬strate, is oxidized in the anode chamber of a diaphragm cell; other metals, dissolved during the etching operation, are transferred to the catholyte. When waste brass etchants are treated in this manner, all of the trivalent chromium is oxidized and more than 40 percent of the copper and zinc is removed. Similar copper removal and chromium oxidation are achieved with waste printed circuit board etchants and rinse waters from plastic etching operations. The electrical energy needed to regenerate 1 kg sodium dichromate is less than 9 kwhr. Regenerated brass etchants evaluated by two companies equaled or exceeded the performance of fresh etchants.

The present article is one of a series which is being prepared by the Southwest Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Department of Mining and Metallurgy, University of Arizona, Tucson, Ariz., of papers dealing with factors involved in the leaching of copper ores. A knowledge of the time required to dissolve the various copper minerals present in ores, as well as of the consumption of leaching reagents is very desirable, because with the decrease of the Nation's total tonnage of sulphide ores increasing attention is being given to the recovery of copper by leaching methods from low-grade disseminated ore containing both oxidized and sulphide minerals. As leaching has already been applied with success and profit, this study was undertaken to determine certain fundamental characteristics that are applicable to all ores suitable for leaching.

"INTRODUCTION The Farmer prospect was examined by W. R. Green, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in June 1944. As a result, studies of this property were included in a general preliminary investigation of the Etevens County lead-zinc deposits by the Bureau in 1945. The exploratory work was designed chiefly to supplement the surface examination by determining the nature of the mineralization below the zone of oxidization. The results of the small-scale diamond-drilling program undertaken at the property are presented in the following report.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization our resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work and prepares the filial report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. In the course of a series of investigations on vanadium deposits of the western United States, the Bureau of Mines collected many hundreds of samples for chemical analysis. As uranium is often associated with these vanadium minerals, they were also analyzed for uranium, which was pound to be absent in a large percentage of the samples. Since the usual methods for determining uranium are laborious and time-consuming it is very desirable to have some simple qualitative test that can be applied prior to a quantitative analysis to determine whether uranium is present or absent and thus save the time and expense of applying the quantitative analysis to the large proportion of samples containing no uranium. To be acceptable, the test should be specific for cranium, sensitive enough to detect small amounts of uranium, and. simple enough to make it worthwhile to apply. The available methods for detecting uranium lacked one or more of the desired characteristics. Eventually, however, a method was worked out that satisfied all the requirements. This method is probably more specific and sensitive than the usual qualitative methods for uranium, and its simplicity and speed of application make it ideal for testing samples prior to quantitative analysis.

The wettability of petroleum reservoir materials by water and crude oil has been recognized as an important factor in determining waterflood behavior. The problem of simulating and studying reservoir conditions and characteristics, to produce laboratory results congruous with field experience, has been examined by many methods. (1, 2, 3, 4).4/ The most generally accepted approach to this problem is determining wettability of the porous medium by imbibition methods; or, after solvent extraction, predetermining the wettability of the samples by coating the surface of the medium to render it preferentially oil-or water-wet (3, 5). The emphasis of wettability studies has been placed on the characteristics of the reservoir materials with little consideration being given to the fluids themselves. Therefore, the wetting tendencies of crude oils have been investigated by a recently developed method (6). Imbibition and the more general phenomena of capillary pressure are the most direct ways to measure wettability. The simplest type of capillary pressure observations involves the use of an interfacial-tension capillarimeter, which does not produce as separate values either interfacial tension or contact angle. Actually, these quantities do not have independent significance in reservoir engineering, and the property of wettability they are intended to evaluate is given, immediately by capillarimetric measurements.

Vehicles traveling on untreated dirt and gravel roads at open-pit mines disseminate high concentrations of dust (fig. 1). Excessive dust creates safety hazards by reducing visibility and may endanger the health of the men who breathe it. If the dust contains free silica, it can cause silicosis. In addition, maintenance costs of mechanical equipment are increased if equipment is operated in extremely dusty places. Dust on haulage roads in hot, arid country can be controlled if the surface of the road is sprinkled frequently and adequately with water. Often, when roads are sprinkled with water to control the dust, hazards are caused through reduced traction and skidding because of the mud that is formed on the surface of the road. Reducing the amount of water used will help to reduce the hazard of skidding.

The purpose of this circular is to show that, under the conditions prevailing in the Stony Point mine, wooden bolts were just as satisfactory as steel bolts or conventional timbering, with a reduction of approximately 80 percent in cost of material. This one fact alone is enough to justify an experiment with wood. This circular will show that production records have remained constant with both wooden and steel roof bolts. INTRODUCTION The successful use of steel roof bolts is now an accomplished fact in the coal industry, but the use of wooden bolts in place of steel is a rarity. The first experiment with wooden roof bolts was mane in 1949 in the Rio Verde mine, Norton Coal Corp., Nortonville, Ky.2/ This experiment was successful; the company obtained excellent results, but operations in the mine were suspended before enough time had elapsed to prove the value of wooden roof bolts conclusively. It is obvious that, if wooden roof bolts could be used in place of steel bolts or conventional timbering-methods, every mine operator would use word, as the cost is only a fraction of the other two methods. The Stony Point experience has proved conclusively that, under certain conditions and with a certain type of roof, wooden roof bolts can be used successfully.

Diamond -drilling blast holes at Eastern Magnetite Mine C is proving economical in boundary shrinks , in removing pillars not readily accessible for percussion drilling , and in driving scraper drifts . The cost per foot drilled is greater than for percussion drilling , but savings in associated factors outweigh this handicap . The rocks drilled include trap rock and magnetite ore . The mining method is the panel , block- caving system utilizing scraper sublevel drifts instead of branch raises to convey the ore to the haulage level . Diamond -drilling blast holes was begun early in 1945. Three rigs equipped with noncoring bits are now in active operation two shifts per day . They are owned by the company , and the drill operators are paid by the day . In shrinkage stopes the drill is mounted on a horizontal bar set against opposite walls of the stope . Stoping holes are horizontal , which gives better results in blasting and requires fewer set ups . In scraper drifts the drill is mounted on a horizontal bar clamped to two columns about feet apart . Trim holes around the periphery of the drift and reliever holes are drilled 50 to 80 feet in length . A 10 - foot wedge cut drilled with a stoper is blasted in conjunction with a corresponding length of the trim holes to effect a 10 -foot advance of the full- sized drift . Recent drilling averages 97 feet per machine shift , excluding time utilized in setting up and moving the machine , hand mucking , and barring down . The feet drilled per bit at present is 417. These data represent the average for drilling in both rock (waste) and ore . Percussion drilling utilizes three types of wet drills . Detachable bits are standard . Gage changes for new bits is 1/8 inch and for reconditioned bits 1/16 inch . The life of a bit is five uses . Resharpening is on contract . A drill carriage is used in haulage headings .

A mineral survey by Bureau of Mines personnel identified no mineral resources or mineral occurrences with development potential at prospects in the Mecca Hills Wilderness Study Area (WSA). Bentonite occurrences are in Skeleton Canyon and Surprise Canyon. Sand and gravel occurrences are numerous in and near the WSA. Much of the Mecca Hills WSA was leased for oil and gas exploration in 1983. No current mining claims or other leases were found in the study area. The Skeleton Canyon Clay Mine yielded clay to seal irrigation canals, Clay to seal ponds was also mined from the Red Top Clay Mine west of the USA. A sand and gravel pit south of the study area (near Box Canyon Wash) supplied material for local construction projects. A commercial sand and gravel pit was operating in 1983 near the mouth of Thermal Canyon 4 miles west of the WSA.

The Bureau of Nines has received many inquiries on the subject of assaying oil-shales, both from individuals who desire to wake their own assay while in the field, and also from Commercial assayers and investigators. The present paper describes the assay retort used by the Bureau of Mines. in the research work on oil-shales now in progress at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the Bureau at Salt Lake City, Utah, and at the Colorado cooperative oil-shale laboratory, Boulder, Colorado. This retort, which was developed through experimentation in the bureau's laboratories, has been found to be convenient in use and. capable of yielding reproducible results. M. J. Gavin, Oil-Shale Technologist, gave valuable assistance in preparing the subject matter for publication and made many helpful suggestions during the experiments made by the writer in the course of the development of the assay retort. L. A. Anderson, research "fellow" University of Utah, assisted in the preliminary development of the assay retort.

"Properties and Uses.Iceland spar is a name given to a pure crystallized form of calcite (CaCo3) which is sufficiently transparent and free of defects to be used in the manufacture of optical instruments. While the actual requirements are small, the degree of purity and physical perfection demanded renders it somewhat difficult to obtain suitable material.The properties of value in Iceland spar are its transparency combined with double refraction. It is used in the manufacture of polarizing microscopes, saccharimeters, colorimeters and photometers. Its most important use is in the manufacture of Nicol prisms, which constitute an essential part of every polarizing microscope. The principle governing the construction of the Nicol prism is as follows:Ordinary light in passing through a crystal of calcite is resolved into two rays of plane polarized light vibrating in planes at right angles to each other and having different indices of refraction. Thus the two rays follow different paths through the crystal. The prism of Iceland spar is cut diagonally and cemented together again with a transparent cement having an index of refraction intermediate between the two rays passing through the prism. Canada balsam is employed for this purpose. The prism is cut at such an angle that the ray having the greatest index of refraction meets the surface of the balsam at an angle greater than the angle of total reflection, and it is thus deflected to the side of the prism, while the second ray passes through. Thus one of the rays is eliminated and polarized light vibrating in a single plane is obtained."

Many mines are opened into the coal beds by shafts; and, at some of these operations, the same cages or skips that are used for hoisting coal also are used for transporting men into and out of the mines. At some mines, separate man-and-material shafts are maintained, and the cages in these are utilized for transporting men and supplies only. In most instances, these cages are operated either singly or in pairs by a hoisting engine installed in a building near the shaft. Single ropes from the tops of the cages pass over bull wheels on the head frame to either electrically or steam-driven hoisting engines that require engineers to operate them. There are records of several instances where hoisting engineers have become incapacitated suddenly while hoisting men, and the passengers on the cages were killed or injured. Where the same cages are used for hoisting cars of coal and for lowering and hoisting men, especially where self-dumping cages or skips are used, safety pre¬cautions must be taken, such as providing steel bonnets for the cage deck, enclosed sides, adequate handholds, gates for closing the end openings, safety catches, and locking devices to prevent accidental dumping. Some of the newer hoisting installations are of the elevator type; where an operator rides in the cage in the same manner as an elevator operator in a building. These cages have single or multiple decks and are primarily for transporting men; but, in some instances, supplies also are transported. They are a great improvement over the installations where the same cages are used for hoisting cars of coal and transporting men.

Since its beginning, the occupation of coal mining has been considered hazardous. It is true that there are hazards inherent in mining, but it is believed that most of them, at least, can be guarded against. Moreover, many man-made hazards can be eliminated by officials and workers adopting safer practices. Notwithstanding the hazards in coal mining, the fatal accident rate in the United States has improved. During the, period from 1911, to 1941, inclusive, the fatal accident rate varied from 5.35 to 2.22 per million tons of coal. With many handicaps during the war period, 1942-45, such as the lack of experienced manpower. and the, employment of untrained men, the increased average age of workers, and the shortage of equipment and supplies, the industry s ill further reduced its accident rate, so that it ranged from 2.30 to 1.724/ deaths per millon tons of coal. During 1944, 684,000,000 tons of coal was produced with a rate of 1.91, and during 1945, 631,000,000 tons was produced with a rate of 1.724/ deaths per millon tons of coal. The accident rate for 1945 was the lowest for the industry since records have been compiled.

The Bureau of Mines determined the composition of the vapors liberated during thermal decomposition of aluminium nitrate nonahydrate. Small samples were heated from room temperature to 5500 C with initial heating rates from 500 to 2000 C/min. Gases were rapidly swept away from the heated chamber with Ar and subjected to immediate analysis in order to minimize reaction between the components. In addition to H20, four N-containing compounds were identified: HN03, N02, NO, and N20. Nz could not be determined in the presence of the nitrogen oxides, and at-tempted separation from the oxides led to the formation of more nitrogen. Relative amounts of each component were found to vary over a period of time; however, total amounts measured with different heating rates were reasonably constant and were typically as follows: 84.2 pct HN03, 7.1 pct N02, 4.3 pct NO, and 4.2 pct N20. HN03 and NO were determined from chemical reactions with a permanganate solution, N20 was measured with a mass spectrometer, and NO2 was measured with a spectro-photometer. Details of the methods used are described. Since NO2 and NO can readily be converted to HN03, about 96 pct of the N from the decomposition can be recovered as HN03

The Bureau of Mines applied automatic computational methods to analyze the degree of correlation between sound transmission and atmospheric conditions. Statistical analysis of data collected over a 5-month period indicated that the following weather variables, listed in order of decreasing importance) have a significant effect on the transmission of sound in the atmosphere: 1. Wind velocity and wind direction. Winds in the direction of travel of the sound wave increase the sound intensity and duration. 2. Barometric pressure. High pressures are related to low sound intensities and durations. 3. Atmospheric temperature. High temperatures are related to low sound intensities and durations. Inversion of the atmospheric temperature did not appear to affect sound transmission under the conditions of this study.
