This investigation was made to study new methods to prepare high-purity yttrium metal, Various methods were used to prepare pure intermediate compounds, primarily chlorides, bromides, and iodides, which were subsequently reduced to metal. The process found most suitable for the preparation of pure anhydrous yttrium chloride involved thermal dehydration of a mixture of hydrated yttrium chloride and ammonium chloride while under vacuum. Yttrium bromide and iodide were prepared most effectively by the direct halogenation of yttrim carbide. Yttrim carbide was obtained by reacting and melting yttrium oxide-carbon mixtures in a carbon-arc furnace. Yttrium halides were purified by vacuum distillation and reduced by alkali or alkaline-earth metals. Lithium and sodium proved to be the best reductants from the standpoint of yield (>95 pct) and purity (>99.8 pct) of the yttrium. The product of the reduction step was sponge metal, which was consolidated readily by conventional cold-mold, arc-melting procedure. The purest yttrium obtained in laboratory scale work was prepared by sodium reduction of yttrium chloride and contained only 125 pp oxygen; other impurities did not exceed 1,000 ppm. In larger scale tests yttrium containing only 800 to 1,000 ppm total impurities was obtained by lithium reduction of yttrium chloride. The tensile properties of high-purity yttrium were determined. Mechanical tests showed that yttrium can be forged, extruded, rolled, spot welded, and deep drawn.

Of the three chemical elements most vitally essential for plant growth the United States, before World War I, had developed ample domestic supplies of but one-phosphorus. During and shortly after the war period, the fixation of nitrogen was greatly expanded in this country, as in many others, insuring a supply adequate for agriculture as well as for munitions. However, in spite of a search for sources of the third element, potassium, which began years before the war, attained almost frantic intensity between 1914 and 1919, and continued for 10 years thereafter, it was not until 1921 that the American Trona Corporation put its Searles Lake operations into continuous production. This company in 1926 became The American Potash & Chemical Co. but has never supplied much more than 15 percent of the potash consumed in the American market. Likewise, though discovered in 1921 in drill cuttings from oil wells, it was not until 1926 that domestic deposits of potassium salts adequate to render the United States independent of foreign sources of supply were proved to occur in the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico.

Use of nuclear reactors to furnish high-temperature heat is a field that has not received as much attention as propulsion and electric power production. Investigations are being conducted under a joint Atomic Energy Commission (AEC)--Bureau of Mines research program to determine the feasibility of using nuclear heat for chemical processing. A part of this process-heat-reactor program is the study of a system in [hich] helium transfers heat from 8 nuclear reactor to a chemical processing [essel]. This requires construction of (1) a nuclear reactor to operate with helium exit temperature of 2,500° F. and with pressures in the range of 250 to 500 p.s.i.g. and (2) a processing vessel (heat exchanger) to convert the enthalpy of the helium into chemical process reaction heat. Neither component exists at present, and development of each promises to be a formidable task. To aid in the study of such a system, the Bureau of Mines has designed and constructed a vessel heated by electrical induction to simulate a source of nuclear fission heat. This vessel is undergoing preliminary testing. Gasification of coal and reforming of hydrocarbons are promising uses for nuclear heat. It appears that a higher price per unit of nuclear heat can be tolerated for chemical processing than that allowable for power generation.

The headquarters of the Bureau of Mines is located in Washington, D.C. The Bureau's research and development program, however, is conducted at 19 research centers and laboratories located throughout the United States.

It is outstanding because the producing formation is very thick; ever modern technique of drilling' and development has been applied; complete records of all operations,, including detailed subsurface information have been kept; the field has ,been developed systematically; and every effort has been made to utilize the reservoir energy efficiently. Data and information pertaining to the development anal operation were collected, compiled, and studied by the writers as if the field were under single ownership. The chief aim of the study was to increase the accuracy of the existing methods of estimating reserves by applying all the data collected during the modern development of an oil field, These scientific aids include coring; electric logging; micropaleontology determinations of porosity, permeability of oil-bearing sands, and their connate water content; subsurface sampling of the reservoir oil; and depth-pressure measurements. In its unending search for the raw materials that the affluent society of today requires the mining industry has found it necessary to go to great depths, in many cases, to produce these materials. Inherent with this problem is the insufficient technology relating to improving extreme environments that the mine personnel are exposed to. In this dissertation, the sources of heat flow into a mine along with the various effects that this heat has on the mine personnel are investigated. The object of dissertation is to compile all the available published information pertaining to these underground heat and their effects into one paper. This will provide the mining industry with an available easy-to-use to aid in the determination of mine ventilation requirements as the mines are in the phases of original planning or being extended to depth. Areas of significant, deficiencies it knowledge have been disclosed during this overall appraisal. Recommendations on important basic research needs are out lined for future consideration by Federal or industries sponsorship. This thesis should serve as a stimulus lo, future well-organized research efforts in the area of underground heat sources and their control.

The Bureau of Mines developed a method to extrude low-density tungsten powder billets into rods and sheet bar with high-energy-rate forming equipment. Billets were compacted and sintered in an atmosphere of hydrogen to obtain a density of approximately 60 percent. Extrusion was conducted at reduction ratios of 6.25 to 1 and 9 to 1 at 1,800° C to prod e high-density, sound material. Yield strengths obtained were higher than those of material produced by conventional powder-metallurgy techniques, but ductility was lower at high temperatures.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been concerned for many years with the general problems of underground coal mining and the particular problems due to the methane content of the coal. The Bureau and others have worked diligently to improve the health and safety conditions for underground coal miners. It has been recognized for many years that the methane in coal would have some value if it could he recovered and used, Also its removal before coal mining began or during the mining cycle itself would make mining safer and more economic due to a potential saving in ventilation costs. The work covered in this report was carried out to review methods of removing methane from active and inactive regions of operating coal mines and to determine how the methane could be concentrated and utilized economically.

This summary of State laws or explosives was compiled primarily to ascertain what subjects relating to their control have been acted upon by each State legislature and, in general, how they have been treated. It does not include any legislation passed after 1942, or any proclamations, regulations, or administrative orders. It does not purport or attempt to be authoritative. If any problem arises involving interpretation of the statutes of any particular State, the original source must be consulted for the exact words used by the legislature. This summary, however, will be useful In determining whether relevant statutes exist, and In locating them quickly,-with a minimum of effort. It will be of value also in comparing statutes in one State with similar statutes in other States to determine what construction has been placed upon them by the courts of those jurisdictions or to contrast the varying provisions of many States upon a similar subject. To make these comparisons easier, the statutory provisions for each State have been grouped under several major topics in outline form. Although this sometimes has resulted in disruption of the continuity of individual acts, the increased general clarity and availability of comparable sections have more than justified the procedure followed.

A literature search and survey were prepared on the technology of surface hydraulic mining, with particular reference to its possible use in the United States forstripping overburden from surface coal mines. Extensive use was made of Russian references which were translated into English. The advantages and disadvantages of hydraulic mining and hydrotransport are identified as well as criteria for selecting potential applications. At present, the major U.S. application is in the phosphate industry of Florida and North Carolina. Potential locations for hydraulic stripping of overburden from coal seams are identified in the states of Alaska, Illinois, Montana, Washington and Wyoming. Other potential applications include the hydraulic mining of peat in Minnesota, and the stripping of overburden from lignite in Texas, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota. Further research is recommended, particularly on the subject of dewatering of fine clay slimes to avoid water pollution and to permit rapid reclamation of mined areas.

Pertinent data on both classes of substances are difficult to obtain experimentally and consequently are extremely rare; it is therefore necessary in many cases, if equations are to be derived, to introduce certain approximations and assumptions. Lack of adequate means of checking results by utilizing data of different types, such as was done frequently in the bulletins dealing with carbonates and sulphates, are readily apparent to anyone who has made even a cursory examination of the available information. Consequently, some of the relationships derived undoubtedly will be found to be inaccurate when more or better data become available. An important activity of the Safety Division of the Bureau of Mines , in its efforts to reduce accidents , is the safety inspection of mines . Inspections are made at the request of the operators and are not connected with the inspections by the various State departments of mines . The operating management is furnished with a confidential report of the results of the Bureau's inspections , with recommendations for elimination of the hazards found . These mine - safety inspections include a study of mining practices , conditions , and equipment and in some cases the sampling and analysis of mine air and coal dust . The Bureau of Mines has no regulatory powers , therefore the recommendations made in these reports are merely suggestions , and operators are not required to adopt them . Mine inspections are a check on safety standards , methods , and practices and are essential to any accident -prevention program . A foreman or superintendent may be sincere in his efforts to operate a mine safely and believe that he has done everything possible to attain this end . However , experience has shown that because of his familiarity with the mine and the consequent " nearness " of its various features many unsafe conditions may be , and in most cases are , overlooked ; an inspector , particularly an outsider who is trained to look for hazards , can point out the unsafe conditions overlooked by the foreman or superintendent . Some companies employ safety engineers who make regular inspections of their mines , report substandard conditions and hazards found , and make recommendations for correcting them . Unless these recommendations are carried out the inspections have little value . In making recommendations , due consideration should be given to the feasibility of carrying them out ; the management may and very often does consider a recommendation impracticable because of the

The work was done to develop a relatively efficient muffler for quieting the exhaust of a rock drill . The exhaust of a pneumatic rock drill is the source of the major part of the noise generated by the drill . The exhaust noise can be reduced in a number of different ways , but this study involved only reactive mufflers . The reactive muffler can be simulated by an electrical circuit . Information obtained from analogous electrical circuits was used to design an efficient exhaust muffler for pneumatic rock drills . Electrical analogies proved to be a valuable tool in the design of mufflers .

This field guide is designed for use in planning pollution control and reclamation activities on small sand and gravel operations. Its purpose is to assist operators in selecting environmentally desirable pollution control and reclamation procedures based upon their particular mining situation. The guide includes information on interpreting physical and cultural factors that must be considered in planning and implementing a mining and reclamation program, achieving environmental protection objectives, and improving community/industry cooperation. Included as appendices are a summary of state laws and a list of additional readings on the subject.

This report discusses research being done by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Branch und the Applied Physics Branch of the Bureau of Mines to deter-mine the most effective uses of explosives in shooting oil and gas wells, as measured in terms of rates of production from the wells. An experimental investigation of the effects of detonating explosives in shallow holes drilled in rocks, chosen to be similar to those forming oil and gas reservoirs, forms the basis of this study. Records obtained from strain gages placed in the rock around the experimental shots permit determination of the generation and propagation characteristics of the strain wave. Water-injection tests made on the test holes before and after shooting allow the increase in fluid conductivity resulting from the shot to be determined. By rotating these data to the physical properties of the rock, and by conducting shooting experiments over the range of rock types common to oil and gas reservoirs, it is expected that relationships between the fluid conductivity and the properties of the explosive and rock can be developed and used for designing efficient shots for oil and gas wells. Four series of experiment.al tests were completed during the summer of 1949 and are described herein. The results of these tests confirmed the feasibility of the experimental approach and permitted outlining the plans for future research discussed in this report. This report is presented to acquaint industry with this research program and the progress to date, so that the Bureau may have the benefit of suggestions from interested readers.
