In the Unfederated Malay States, with the exception of Johore, the rights of suzerainty, protection, and administration were transferred by giam to the British Government in 1909. In the States of Kelantan, Trengganu, Kedah, and Perlis, the rulers are assisted by State Councils and by British advisers appointed by the British Government.3 With respect to Johore, the largest, richest, and most highly organized of the Malay States not in the Federation, the treaty of December 11, 1885, with Great Britain, defined the relations of the State to the British Govern- ment and allowed the Maharaja to assume the title of "Sultan"; an amendment to this treaty (May 12, 1914) provided that the Sultan should be advised by a British officer, the General Adviser. ...... The political organization of the States is reflected in the mining legis- lation, Johore being the only one having a comprehensive code. When an underground excavation is made, the rock surrounding the sides and top of the opening is deprived of its natural support and tends to fall. Whenever caving takes place, the time and extent of the caving depend on the character and condition of the rock. In strong homogenous rock, such as solid granite, even a large chamber may stand indefinitely, whereas a soft material, such as clay or a loose material like unconsolidated sand, falls immediately if not supported. Weaknesses in the rocks induced by structural features, such as joints, :fissures, bedding and cleavage planes, and fractures produced by blasting, will cause the falling of insecure blocks or slabs unless means are provided to support these in place. In an unsupported mine opening, as a tunnel, the first slight settling or adjusting movement of the rocks (the "initial creep" or "set") is caused by the great weight of overlying material pressing down the rock masses above and around the roof and sides of the opening until they key together in roughly the form of an arch. The rock, after it has adjusted itself to this shape, becomes. selfsupporting. Timbering is necessa.ry in all mining only to support, therefore, those comparatively small blocks or pieces of rock which tend to loosen from the top and sides of the opening during or after the formation 'of the natural rock arch, and which lie between this natural rock arch and the opening. This statement, of course, has its limitations. For example; a layer of strong rock, like limestone, may act as a beam; then only the material under the limestone will need support. Timbering is not, as is commonly supposed by the layman, used to supp!ort the huge mass of rock between the back (roof) of an underground opening and the surface. It would be impossible to place enough timbers in a:ny underground opening to support such a mass. This fact is not'·perceived by all miners.

Dolomite, heretofore regarded merely as a variety of commonplace limestone, has suddenly attained headline prominence, partly because of the increase in demand for dolomite refractories to line metallurgical furnaces now working at an unprecedented rate of activity, but chiefly because it has become an ore of the light-weight metal, magnesium, needed in vast quantities for the manufacture of war machines. A multitude of inquiries, chiefly from war agencies and prespective operators, for data not only on locations of dolomite deposits but on their size and quality, has made it necessary for the Bureau of Mines to assemble all information available on this important subject. From the Bureau's own records, published information, and correspondence, date on locutions, extent, thickness, accessibility, workability, and chemical composition of high-grade dolomite deposits throughout the United states were accumulated for presentation herein. The report includes about 1,000 tabulations of analyses and a map showing locations of the deposits. The uses of dolomite are discussed in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7192, "Occurrences and Uses of Dolomite in the United-States," published in 1941. The cordial corporation of many State ecological surveys and various individuals who have contributed information is gratefully acknowledged.

Longwall mining in lower seam heights may necessitate the use of single-drum shearers to overcome size constraints associated with standard double-drum shearers. To avoid the operational problem of clearance in the tailgate entry with one single-drum shearer, two single-drum machines can be operated on the same face, with each shearer responsible for mining a predefined portion of the face. However, utilization of two shearers on the same face necessitates the positioning of one shearer operator and a jacksetter in the return air of the upwind shearer, thus complicating respirable dust control on the longwall. In an effort to evaluate the unique dust control problems associated with this type of mining, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted dust surveys on two multiple-machine longwall operations. Sampling was done to quantify major sources of respirable dust and to identify potential solutions to problem areas. Sampling results indicate that the cutting sequences utilized on multiple-machine faces may have to be designed to minimize dust exposure, as opposed to optimizing productivity or facilitating operational requirements. Also, state-of-the-art dust control techniques typically found on double-drum shearer longwalls must be employed to help minimize the exposure of all face personnel to traditional dust sources.

This paper describing the concentrator practice of the Cananea Consolidated Copper Co. at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, is one of a series of articles on milling methods and costs being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The Cananea concentrator treats 2,400 tons of copper ore per day by preferential flotation, whereby the copper sulphides are floated and the iron pyrite depressed. During the first half of the year 1929 the heads to the concentrator averaged 3.29 per cent of copper, the recovery was 95.74 per cent of the total copper, and the concentrates produced contained 21.44 per cent of copper.

The productive capacity of natural-gasoline and cycle plants in the United States as of January 1, 1952 was 811,596 barrels per day, an increase of 163,691 barrels per day since the last survey on January 1, 1950. The rate of growth during these 2 years has been 12 percent per year s only slightly below the maximum rate, recorded from 1948-50. This survey, for the first time, presents capacity data on a barrel rather than a gallon basis. Also, for the first time, a break-down of capacity by products has been obtained. The combined LP-gas producing capacity of plants and fractionators equaled 382,790 barrels per day, 47 percent of the total industry capacity tor all products. During January 1952, LP-gas and natural gasoline and other products were each produced at the rate of 76 percent of the January 1 capacity.

This paper gives the results of a reconnaissance of the mining districts of Mineral County, Nev., made during the month of June and the first 10 days in October 1936.3/ During the field work virtually all the mining districts in the county were visited and many data were obtained relative to active and inactive properties. The report covers the location of the various mining districts, nature of deposits, ownership, information on past and current activity, data on economic conditions, and general information likely to be useful to operators and investors and others interested in mining. The geology of the deposits is discussed only in a general way. For nearly three-quarters of a century mining tin Mineral County has been the principal if not the only industry of importance. At times it has reached a very low ebb, and at other times it has been attended by the wild excitement that usually accompanies valuable discoveries of precious metals.

Up to 1914 almost all of the world's supply of potash came from Germany and Alsace. With the cessation of shipments from Germany during the World War the importance of a domestic supply was evident, During the past 15 years the United States has been working toward the establishment of a domestic potash industry which would end foreign dominance in this commodity. The Federal government has taken an active part in this program. As its share in the work, the Bureau of Mines has ascertained the potash resources in certain districts through core drilling and has engaged in a comprehensive program of research on the extraction of potash from its various minerals. Until the passage of the Winter bill (H. R. 496) by Congress in 1928 the Bureau of Mines had not been able to give any consideration to the western ores, wyomingite (leucite) and alunite. With the Passage of this bill, however, the ray was opened for the extension of the potash studies to cover these materials.

This report on the physical and chemical properties of typical crude oils of Oklahoma is the sixth in a series of preliminary chapters of a bulletin covering the producing districts of the United. States. Preceding reports* may be obtained on request. The details of the methods used in this survey in collecting samples, making laboratory tests, and interpreting results are discussed in the first three papers. If any errors or omissions are noted by readers, it is hoped they will be brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines for correction before the appearance of the permanent report. Samples of Oklahoma crudes analyzed in this report were taken from those fields representing the major production of the State. The Oklahoma Geological Survey designates 172 different oil and gas fields in the State, S1 being in Osage County, 14 in Tulsa County, 14 in Okmulgee County, 9 in Washington County. The list of samples collected by the Bureau of Mines represents only 5 fields in Osage County - Bigheart, Burbank, Hominy, Osage Junction, and Pershing - yet these samples, together with those from adjoining fields, are representative of nearly all crude produced in the county. Systematic flooding was introduced into Nowata County, Okla., in May 1931. The results of this means of stimulating the nearly depleted Bartlesville reservoir in the county has been the subject of four Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations.2-5/ This report presents a discussion of four full-scale water-flooding projects in the Delaware-Childers field and 1 pilot project in the Curl Creek field (fig. 1). All five plants have been in operation for only a few months. Although substantial increases in the rates of oil production have been obtained 1 by the injection of water, the projects are of particular interest at this time because of the novel methods of operation and new equipment that are being employed. One project utilizes a portable "package" plant designed for a pilot operation. All of the controls for this project are centrally located. The design makes it possible to remove the test plant to another location if the project is unsuccessful or if the unit is to be replaced by a larger plant. This project also utilizes diatomaceous-earth filters successfully for the first time and makes use of plastic pipe. Another novel feature of the operation is the aeration of Arbuckle limestone water through an airlift in the supply well.

Flotation tests are described on samples of two lowgrade nickeliferous ores of Oregon and Washington. The sample from the Congress mine, Ferry County, Wash., contained 1.2 percent Ni, occurring chiefly as millerite. The sample from the Shamrock mine, Jackson County, Oreg., contained 2.20 percent Ni and 0.78 percent Cu occurring chiefly as pentlandite, nickeliferous pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite. The millerite in the Congress ore was concentrated by flotatioin with aulfydric collectors in a series of locked tests to recover 73 percent of the nickel as a 7 percent bulk concentrate. By successively regrinding and floating the bulk concentrate, it was further concentrated to 12.4 percent Ni at a recovery of 59 percent and 21.8 percent Ni at a recovery of 50 percent. Attempts at selective concentration of the copper-nickel Shamrock ore were only partly successful because of the intimate association of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. The nickel concentrate, which contained 86 percent of the nickel, had an analysis of 4.42 percent Ni and 1.03 percent Cu. The copper concentrate had an analysis of 18.8 percent Cu and 1.96 percent Ni and contained 48.5 percent of the copper. A bulk sulfide concentrate contained 92 percent of the copper and 01 per¬cent of the nickel and had an analysis of 4.17 percent Ni and 1.63 percent Cu.

The Explosives Division of the United States Bureau of Mines makes certain laboratory and field investigations that deal with explosions, explosives, ignition, and combustion, together with many related problems, such as the cause and prevention of fires, and certain fundamental scientific questions bearing upon the determination of the chemical and physical mechanisms underlying some of the important phenomena encountered. Its work on explosives has been particularly directed toward determination of the chemical and physical characteristics of explosives designed for use in coal mines and in a more limited way to those used in metal mines, tunnels, quarries, and other engineering operations. This testing is handled by two units of the Explosives Division, as follows:

"Accidents at coal mines in the United States in September 1926 resulted in the loss of 170 lives, according to information furnished to the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, by State mine inspectors. Of this number 125 occurred at bituminous mines and 45 in the anthracite field. As the bituminous output of coal for September was 48,976,000 tons, and the production of anthracite was 8,444,000 tons, the fatalities reported represented a death rate of 2.55 per million tons for bituminous mines and 5.33 for anthracite mines. The industry as a whole showed a fatality rate of 2.6 per million tons of coal produced in September 1925 the rate for bituminous coal mines was 3.29; the anthracite mines were idle in September last year due to a strike.During the first nine months of the present year 1,759 men have been killed by accidents at the coal mines throughout the United States, resulting in a death rate, per million tons of coal produced, of 3.76 as compared with 3.95 for the same period in 1925. Reports for bituminous mines alone showed a nine-month fatality rate of 3.53 which was about the same as the corresponding rate from January to September in 1925. The anthracite rate for the present year, however, shows a decrease of about 17 per cent; that is, the rate has declined from 6.36 to 5.28.Records covering the first nine months of 1926 show that 12 ""major"" disasters, that is, disasters in which five or more men were killed at one time, have resulted in the loss of 271 lives as against 10 disasters and 199 deaths in the corresponding months in 1925. The fatality rates for these disaster: alone were 0.579 and 0.465, respectively. One major explosion occurred at Tahona, Oklahoma, on September 3, 1926, in which 16 men lost their lives.An analysis of the principal causes of the 1,759 fatalities for the first nine months of the present year shows a reduction in the death rate as a whole and for falls of roof and coal and for explosives, but an increase in haulage, gas and dust explosions, and electricity. The Bureau of Mines studied the potential availability of primary antimony (Sb) from demonstrated resources in 21 mines and deposits in market economy countries (MEC's). Twelve of these properties were evaluated as producers and nine as non- producers. The 21 studied properties contain 499,600 mt Sb as demonstrated resources, of which 304,000 mt is recoverable as antimony metal; another 973,500 mt Sb is contained in inferred resources. Recoverable antimony from demonstrated U.S. deposits is only 10,700 mt, just 3.5 pct of the MEC total. Domestic production of primary antimony from operating mines has averaged only 561 mt/yr over the 10-yr period 1975-84. This represents just over 5 pct of total U.S. consumption of primary antimony, which averaged 11,081 mt/yr during the same period. The United States will thus continue to rely on imported ores andlor concentrates, antimony oxides, and metal to satisfy domestic industrial requirements. At production costs up to $1.15/lb Sb, 110,000 mt of refined antimony is potentially available from 10 of the 21 studied properties. At $2/lb, 294,000 mt Sb is available, and at $3/lb, the total rises to 304,000 mt Sb available from all evaluated producers of refined antimony.

EARLY in 1949, the Economic Cooperation Administration requested the Bureau of Mines to assign a coal-mining engineer to study milling conditions in Greek lignite mines; to make recommendations for the introduction of methods and practices that should increase production and decrease the cost of mining; and, from the results of a geological reconnaissance by geologists of the United States Geological Survey, to suggest plans for the development of mines to supply fuel for a thermal power plant, Albert L. Toenges was assigned to this investigation and arrived in Athens, Greece, March 15, 1949. The study of mining operations and the geological reconnaissance (which was made by W. G. Pierce and X. M. Denson, geologists, United States Geological Survey) Were conducted concurrently. The Geological Survey will publish the results of its investigation separately. Washability studies of lignites from Aliveri and Kimi were made at the Central Experiment Station of the Bureau of -Mines, Pittsburgh, Pa. The lignite fields mentioned in this bulletin are shown in figure 1.

Study and development of sensing techniques and sensors were performed to aid shuttle car drivers in detecting obstacles and in guiding the car along the face haulage route. Microwave, acoustic, and optical sensing techniques were considered as part of the feasibility study for obstacle detection. Various guidance techniques, including wire-following and rib-ranging were investigated. Active optical sensing was selected for obstacle detection to obtain the beam coverage and sharp angular cutoff characteristics required within the packaging limitations defined by the shuttle car configuration. Rib-ranging guidance was selected to achieve a completely self-contained shuttle car system which responds to the existing mine geometry without need for wires, stripes, or other path defining devices. Extensive hybrid computer simulation runs were performed to evaluate various guidance techniques during the feasibility study. Subsequent simulation runs were performed to establish parameter values for the rib-ranging guidance system. The obstacle detection and guidance system was designed, fabricated and installed on a standard shuttle car. The system satisfied all applicable permissibility requirements of Schedule 2G. An experimental permit was issued to Bendix for operation in an underground coal mine. System evaluation tests were performed first above ground at the Bendix Research Laboratories. The simulation model was validated by these runs. Final testing was performed underground in an operating mine with an experienced shuttle car driver. All sensors successfully demonstrated the predicted performance capability during underground face haulage tests. Dust did not impair system performance and lens cleaning was not required during working shifts. Further development is required to achieve the desired obstacle detection performance. Closed loop steering control with manual override is recommended for the lateral guidance system. The guidance system should be an invaluable aid to low-coal shuttle car drivers where continuous mining machines are utilized.

This paper summarizes precent knowledge of the ignition qualities of pure hydrocarbons likely to be present in modern Diesel engine fuels, as shown by an extensive search of the technical literature. The report also discusses the possible significance of cetane number and hydrocarbon struc- ture. Cetane or cetene numbers, and other physical properties, are tabu- lated for about 100 hydrocarbons, and a bibliography is appended. In recent years the Diesel engine has enjoyed increasing popularity due to its dependability, inherent characteristics of fuel economy, and the fact that it operates on a fuel that hitherto has been available in comparatively large quantities at a low price. These qualities have en- abled the compression-ignition engine to compete very favorably with other types of prime movers in many fields and have led to predictions of fur- ther rapid expansion in the application of Diesel power. In a survey of the field of all petroleum fuels for combustion engines, Holaday et al (9) have predicted that by 1948 railroads will be using 10 times as much Diesel fuel as was used in 1939 and that over-all consumption will have doubled that of 1939. Other estimates of the yearly demand for Diesel fuels five years hence vary from 2,6 to 5 times the amount used in 1944. Into this picture has come the question of whether the greatly in- creased production to meet this estimated demand is compatible with the maintenance and possible improvement in quality of fuels necessary to satisfy future engines. Unfortunately perhaps for the Diesel engine, factors other than those of simple arithmetical multiplication must be considered. For example, the consumption of oil in central heating plants doubled from 1935 to 1943, and a further increase of 57 percent of the 1943 demand is expected by 1950. Jet propulsion has been developed to the stage where it is entirely practical for military aircraft. Catalytic cracking plants, many of which were constructed to meet the war- time accelerated demand for high-octane gasoline, are taking their place in the refining industry. All these developments, as well as the Diesel engine, require material of approximately the same boiling range. Virgin gas oils make excellent burner fuels, perform most satisfactorily in the gas-turbine units for aircraft according to present information, and are at a premium as catalytic cracking stock.
