The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1993 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. For the continent as a whole, world shares of most commodities showed little change from those of 1992 although most output volumes showed a slight decline. There were no significant production increases, but there were significant decreases of cobalt and copper because of political instability in Zaire and production problems in Zambia, of chromite resulting from cutbacks in South Africa and Zimbabwe, and of phosphate rock owing to a lower output by producers in general. (See tables 1 and 2.) Among the most significant mineral commodities produced in Africa, ranked by portion of world production in 1993, were diamond, cobalt, chromite, gold, phosphate rock, manganese ore, uranium and petroleum. Others of importance in world trade were andalusite, antimony, asbestos, bauxite, coal, copper, fluorspar, lithium minerals, platinum-group metals (PGM), titanium minerals (ilmenite and rutile), vanadium, vermiculite, and zircon. Several of these-chromite cobalt, diamond, and manganese-were not produced in the United States.

This paper describes the Bureau of Mines research program on the reliability of computerized mine-monitoring systems. The basic concepts of computerized monitoring are introduced along with its advantages and limitations. Current Bureau projects covering mine-monitoring systems are described, and some of the major areas of concern that should be addressed by future projects are outlined.

Roof supports can only be understood in conjunction with the rock structure that they support. The strength of the rock depends on geology, and the loads are applied primarily by the in situ and mining-induced stresses. Other factors, such as wider spans and retreat or multiple-seam mining, can also reduce the stability of mine openings. Roof supports are used to help stabilize these openings, but their performance characteristics must be properly matched to the loading environment and ground behavior if they are to succeed. Roof supports include both intrinsic supports, such as roof bolts, and standing supports. The key characteristics of any support include its maximum load-carrying capacity, stiffness, and residual strength. Other important factors are the timing of installation, the stability of the support as it is loaded, and the capability of the support system to provide skin control. This paper explains in practical terms how supports work and the important factors in ensuring that a good support design and application strategy are developed.

Two pieces of European Union (EU) legislation together establish requirements for protection against risks from vibration at work. The vibration directive1 specifies duties of employers to protect workers from risks from exposure to vibration; the machinery directive2, specifies duties of manufacturers and suppliers regarding the safety of machinery marketed in the EU. This paper discusses both directives and the standardisation programmes that support them. It also addresses the implementation of these requirements in Great Britain. Employers’ duties: the vibration directive This directive requires employers to assess and control risks to health and safety arising from hand-arm vibration (HAV) and whole-body vibration (WBV). Member States were required to implement the directive in national legislation by 6 July 2005. Employers are required to eliminate vibration risk at source, or reduced to a minimum. The duties include: assessing risk and exposure; planning and implementing the necessary risk control measures; providing and maintaining suitable work equipment; providing workers with information and training on risks and their control; and monitoring and reviewing the effectiveness of the risk control programme. Daily exposure exceeding a specified action value triggers a requirement for a programme of technical and organisational measures to minimise vibration exposures and the resulting risk, and the provision of health surveillance. Exposures above a specified limit value are prohibited. When conducting their risk assessments, employers are required to “assess and, if necessary, measure” the vibration exposure of workers, for comparison with the action and limit values. Vibration measurement in the workplace is not expected in all cases and the use of vibration information from equipment manufacturers is specifically mentioned. This provides a link with the machinery directive (see below). Manufacturers’ and suppliers’ duties: The machinery directive The machinery directive, first introduced in 1989, is intended to remove barriers to trade. It puts duties on manufacturers and suppliers who place machinery on the European market to design their products to eliminate or reduce risks to health and safety and to warn the user of any residual risks, providing information required for safe use (for example, operator training, maintenance and selection of consumables). General statement.-The briquetting tests conducted by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey had their beginning in the testing of coals and lignites at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, St. Louis, Mo., in 1904. Briquetting tests were made at the fuel-testing plants at St. Louis, Mo., and at Norfolk, Va. Similar tests to be made at the experiment station of the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburg, Pa., form an essential part of investigations looking to the determination of the fuel value of the coals and lignites belonging to or for the use of the United States. The tests have comprised (1) the manufacture of briquets to determine the adaptability of different coals and lignites to the process and the merits of different binding materials; (2) physical tests to establish the fitness of the briquets to withstand weathering, transportation, and handling; and (3) steaming tests to prove the calorific value of the briquets in boilers of different types used by the Government, and, by comparison with the raw coals, the benefits to be derived from briquetting. Details of the tests have been issued in other publications. list of Government publications on fuel testing and briquetting is given at the close of this volume. Tests at Norfolk.-The fuel tests conducted at Norfolk included a detailed investigation of a number of Virginia and West Virginia coals that are bought by the United States Government for the Navy and for use in constructing the Panama Canal, and are extensively used by the merchant marine, manufacturing plants, and railroads. Through a cooperative arrangement with the Navy Department steaming tests of the coals were undertaken to determine the relative merits of the same coal when burned raw or as briquets in marine boilers. Preliminary arrangements were made between Joseph A. Holmes, then expert in charge of the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey and now director of the Bureau of Mines, and Rear-Admiral Charles W. Rae, Chief Engineer of the United States Navy. The tests were made on board the U. S. torpedo boat Biddle, designated for the purpose, beginning December 6, 1907, and ending January 27, 1908. The coal used in these tests came from the Sewell and Beckley beds in the New River district of West Virginia. With the particular equipment used in the tests both coal and briquets were far. from smokeless; consequently the data of this bulletin are applicable only by analogy to parallel operation with a coal more nearly smokeless, but nevertheless applicable with much reliability. The possibilities of coals of different composition are indicated by the data to be published in a bulletin of the Bureau of Mines, wherein the present authors describe a number of tests in which only a very slight amount of smoke was emitted while burning raw coal from the Pocahontas No.3 bed, West Virginia, and briquets made therefrom at rates of combustion very much higher than any rates used in the torpedo-boat boiler. At a combustion rate of 120 pounds of the Pocahontas briquets per square foot of grate surface there was scarcely any smoke. It was the original intention to make a set of preliminary steaming tests alongside a dock (which tests furnish material for this bulletin) and to finish with a set of running tests at sea; but the running tests were never made, for lack of time and men.

ANTICIPATING the eventual use of the huge tonnages of nonmagnetic taconites of the Mesabi range of the United States, the Federal Bureau of Mines is classifying and evaluating these deposits in detail. This introductory report describes work begun in 1954 as part of a long-range program to sample, classify, and evaluate important occurrences of nonmagnetic taconite on the Mesabi, range. Included in this report are brief discussions of the geology, history, and potential of the Mesabi range district and mining industry, together with a more detailed presentation of the sampling and metallurgical evaluation of these nonmagnetic taconite deposits. A total of 898 field samples was collected. Most of these were taken in the region between Grand Rapids and Chisholm, Minn., but a few came from the area between Chisholm and Buhl, Minn. Of the total samples, 865 were from open pit bank faces where the greater vertical distances presented by the cherty members facilitated the taking of a large number of samples. Conversely, the narrow face presented by the slaty members confined and limited the areas from which samples were taken. In addition, 33 of the field samples were taken from rock dumps in order to determine, in a preliminary way, the characteristics of these materials.

This report describes the methods and results of field investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines between December 1956 and December 1957 on seven deposits of nickel-cobalt-iron-bearing laterite and weathered serpentine near the west coast of Puerto Rico east and south of Mayaguez. These deposits were named, for purposes of identification, Guanajibo, Punta Guanajibo, Las Mesas, north and south deposits of the Rosario Southeast group, and the west and east deposits of the Maricao Southwest group. In addition, the lower 17 miles of the Guanajibo River Valley was tested at widely spaced intervals for possible concentrations of magnetite and chromite in the alluvial sands. The objective of the investigations was to appraise, by drilling and sampling, the two largest deposits--the Guanajibo and Las Mesas. Testing of the smaller deposits was much more restricted. Field investigations consisted of mapping, drilling with power auger, sampling drill-hole sections, and pre-paring samples for chemical analyses, mineralogical studies, and metallurgical tests. The work was financed jointly under a cooperative agreement by the Bureau of Mines and the Economic Development Administration, an agency of the Puerto Rican Commonwealth.

Manipulation of hand-held objects in 3D space is a complex task. Understanding how individual digits interact with a hand-held object provides helpful information for hand tool designers, researchers, clinicians, and occupational therapists. At the object-digit interface, the contact mechanics can be represented by three force and three torque components. Six-component force/torque transducers can register all the three forces and three torques at the digit-object interface, and therefore are advantageous in the study of manipulation mechanics. The large number of force and torque signals from multiple force/torque transducers are difficult to interpret and therefore making experimental research of manipulation a challenging task. The purpose of this study was to develop a 3D visualization tool for the investigation of the contact mechanics at the object-digit interfaces during manipulation tasks. Methods A 3D stick-figure hand model was created based on digitized 23 anatomical landmarks of the hand. Five miniature 6-component force/torque transducers (4 × Nano17 for the fingers, 1 × Mini40 for the thumb, ATI Industrial Automation, NC) were used to record force and torque data at the tips of individual digits. Thirty channels of force/torque signals from the transducers were collected by a 16-bit analogue-digital converter (PCI-6031, National Instrument, Austin, TX) installed in a computer. The transducers were mounted on a custom-made rectangular aluminum handle for object manipulation. Coordinate frames were established at each transducer, on the handle, and at the base of the MicroScribe digitizer. To visualize the force vectors at the digit-tips, the coordinates of the hand landmarks in the MicroScribe coordinate frame and the force vectors in local transducer coordinate frames were transformed to a common coordinate frame defined on the handle. One healthy right-handed, male subject participated in the experimental study. During the tests, the participant sat in a chair by a testing table. The forearm was strapped to an arm holder in neutral rotation position. The instrumented handle was fixed on the testing table by a C-clamp through an adapting plate. With the hand of the subject gripped on the instrumental handle, the landmarks of the instrumented handle and the transducers, as well as the anatomical landmarks of the hand were digitized using the MicroScribe digitizer for the purpose of coordinate frame establishment and transformation as described above. The subject performed three different maximum isometric voluntary contraction tasks: (1) grasping, (2) rotating in pronation, and (3) lifting. Results The 3D hand model and representative force vector clusters in a single trial of grasping, rotating, and lifting tasks are shown in Figure 1. "INTRODUCTION As virtually no published data are available on the sintering of fine, minus-100-mesh, ferrograde manganese ores, it is most opportune to present data on the amenability of various fine ores and mill products to the sintering process. These data cover the sintering or nodulizing of finely crushed, high-grade pyrolusite and rhodochrosite ores, sintering of manganese carbonate flotation concentrate, sintering or nodulizing the calcine from the deleading of a manganese oxide flotation concentrate, and sintering the calcines made in a Herreshoff furnace from the treatment of manganese sulfate products.If finely sized products are to be smelted in the present electric or blast ferromanganese furnaces, they must be sintered or nodulized. The only specification as to the size of the sintered or nodulized product is that it must pass a 6-inch screen and not contain over 1t-1/2 percent minus 20-mesh material. The minimum-maximum size has not been established. Undoubtedly this opti mum size will be set by the ferromanganese industry when ample quantities of manganese oxide sinters have been smelted."

The purpose of this paper is to present to the operators, in other districts a detailed description of the ruining method used and the results obtained to exploiting one of the zinc-lead deposits of the Kansas-Oklahoma-Missouri district. No. 1. mine is located in the heart of the town of Picher in the extreme northeast corner of Oklahoma. HISTORY The first prospect drilling was done at No. 1 mine late in-1914, and shaft sinking was started early in 1915. Sufficient ore was developed to start construction of the mill in April, 1016, Production begin in August, 1916, and the mine s been producing, except for short periods, to the present time. The property was originally a 40-acre tract, but additional properties have been consolidated with the original one until the mine now covers 200 acres.

While coal occurs beneath about 18 percent of Utah, only 4 percent of the state has minable reserves. Utah's coal fields are mostly bituminous. Current coal production in Utah is largely by underground mining, making Utah unique among the coal-producing states. Most coal seams are more than 8 feet thick. Utah's coal resources are about 6.3 billion tons, 1.3 percent of the national reserve. Most of Utah's coal resources are held by the Federal Government and Indian tribes and are mined under lease. The climate of the Utah coal region is characterized by hot, dry summers and cold, relatively moist winters. Normal precipition varies from 6 inches in the lower valleys to more than 40 inches on some high plateaus. The growing season ranges from 5 months in some valleys to less than 3 months in mountainous regions. These extreme climatic conditions make reclamation difficult. Utah gained primacy when its regulatory program was conditionally approved January 21, 1981. Full program approval was obtained March 7, 1983. The Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved June 3,1983. A Federal Lands Cooperative Agreement was signed in March 1987; Utah performs all enforcement activities and some permitting activities on federal lands.

Consumption of abrasive materials in the United States increased 22% in value over that of 1982 to $320 million; of which, 59% was manufactured abrasive, 35% was industrial diamond (natural and synthetic), and 6% was natural abrasive. Production value of natural abrasives, excluding industrial diamond, remained virtually unchanged. Production of crude tripol, a porous siliceous rock, decreased slightly; however, shipments of processed tripoli increased 13% in quantity and 32% in value. Production of garnet, an abundant iron-aluminum silicate, continued to increase primarily because of further increases in production from one plant that had completed an expansion program in late 1981. Production of special silica stone, both crude and finished, decreased in 1983 because of reduced demand for oilstones

Tests of mine-roof models in a centrifuge show that the suspension effect due to bolting a horizontally bedded mine roof with frictionless surfaces of contact between beds depends principally on the number of bolted beds and their relative flexural rigidities, provided that sufficient bolt tension is exerted to prevent strata separations at the bolt locations. Strata separations tend to occur in the unbolted roof mainly because the beds have unequal thicknesses. "Suspension effect" refers to the transfer of part of the weight of weaker or thinner beds to the flexurally more rigid beds by roof bolts or by any other means. The factors investigated were number of beds in the bolted unit, bed thickness, modulus of elasticity of beds, length of bolts, spacing of bolts across and along the opening, bolt load, and intensity of roof load. The general principles of behavior of the bolted roof beds are explained by an approximate theory. Model test data are used to validate the theory and to obtain an expression for the "suspension efficiency". As the suspension effect actually observed in the models is smaller than that predicted by the approximate theory, the suspension efficiency in general is less than unity. Mathematical expressions are obtained for (1) the change in roof bending stress due to the suspension effect, which is needed for design of a roof-bolting system, (2) the change of roof deflection due to the suspension effect, which may be useful for evaluating the effectiveness of a roof-bolting system, and (3) the bolt load or pre-load that is required to achieve the desired reinforcing effect.

Because backfill has occasionally collapsed into an active working area, posing a hazard to miners, engineers from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Hecla Mining Co. installed instruments in a cemented, backfilled, stope-ramp intersection at Hecla’s Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID. The purpose was to measure stress and strain changes in the backfill and reinforcing members during undercut mining. The instruments were monitored for 6 months while three successive cuts were mined below the intersection. Readings showed induced loads up to 3450 kPa (500 psi) in the backfill as stope walls converged 2.5 to 12 cm (1 to 5 in). The backfill then deformed against the top and bottom plates of the 2-m- (6-ft-) long vertical rock bolts installed as reinforcement, producing loads to 177 kN (40,000 lb)on the rock bolts. We hypothesize that a compressive zone was created in the backfill that allowed the backfill to remain stable as long as the compressive zones from adjacent rock bolts overlapped. This hypothesis is presented in graphical form. Of particular interest was the effect of loading on trusses installed to augment the vertical rock bolts and wire mesh typically installed in backfill. Data from the instruments indicate that wall closure perpendicular to the vein induced loads in truss legs parallel to the vein and in the rock bolt driven through the center of the truss, but, because they are designed to function under tension, truss legs perpendicular to the vein supplied in significant support as a result of compressional forces from wall closure. Based on this study, use of trusses was discontinued, and an alternative support system of wood beams and posts was installed as needed to ensure the safety of miners working beneath the backfill in stope-ramp intersections.

Under the terms of the act establishing the Bureau of Mines, this bureau was authorized to carryon the work of testing and analyzing fuels which had been conducted by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey. That work included in its scope an investigation of the availability and uses ofliquid as well as solid fuels, for the original outline of the fuel-testing investigations contemplated, as soon as the funds would be available, a study of the liquid-fuel resources of the country and the making of related researches to determine how these resources could be utilized with greatest efficiency. Owing to the fact that many difficulties were being encountered in the adaptation of the heavier fuel oils for convenient use in internalcombustion engines, it was deemed best to begin the investigation of liquid fuels with tests of gasoline, a fuel in more or less general use. When this investigation began, the extensive introduction, especially by foreign powers, of liquid fuels for small naval craft had awakened much interest. However, the quality of gasoline was reported to vary materially in different countries and the quantity available was said to be rapidly decreasing, with the probability of a prohibitive increase in price. At the same time the claim was made that denatured alcohol, of fairly uniform quality, could be procured in all parts of the world, that unlimited quantities could be readily produced at a low cost, and that this fuel could be used much more efficiently than gasoline in internal-combustion engines. Such statements naturally led to a widespread belief that the time was near at hand when denatured alcohol would entirely displace gasoline as engine fuel. Therefore, the first investigations of the liquid mineral fuels logically embraced a careful series of comparative tests of gasoline and denatured alcohol in engines. A series of over 2,000 such tests was conducted at the Government fuel-testing plants at St. Louis, Mo., and Norfolk, Va., details of which are given in the following pages. The report is published by the Bureau of Mines because of the transfer of the fuel-testing investigations to this bureau.

This circular, which is a revision and combination of two previous publications,3 4/ presents information on the different types of equipment that may be used to analyze mine atmospheres, with particular reference to the application and limitations of each type. Such information is frequently requested by mining companies, State mining departments, and other agencies concerned with safety in mining who wish advice regarding methods of analysis of mine atmospheres and the equipment necessary for establishing laboratories for that purpose. Since the Haldane-type apparatus is particularly applicable to the accurate determination of carbon dioxide, oxygen, and combustible gases such as methane in mine atmospheres, that apparatus and the method of operation are described in detail. The circular presents results of a critical study of the accuracy attainable with the Haldane-type apparatus in the determination of methane in concentrations of the order of 0.25 percent, by volume. Analytical procedures involved in the other methods discussed are presented in publications referenced in this circular. Information is given also on the various accessory equipment needed in a laboratory for the analysis of mine atmospheres, and suggestions on laboratory design are included.
