The United States produces about 30 percent of the world output of salt. Numerous deposits occur in widely separated areas, but the leading producing States are California, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia. Although no great amount of salt is produced at present in Pennsylvania, the potential sources in that State recently aroused a good deal of interest. The United States salt industry is highly organized; it comprises fewer companies than when small crude works with primitive methods and equipment eked out salt for local needs, but concentration of output brought about by modern inventions and methods of production has improved the quality of the produce greatly and accelerated production.

A small, annular-retort gasifier having a nominal capacity of 40 pounds of lignite per hour was designed and constructed at the Lignite Experiment Station, Grand Forks, N. Dak. The purpose of the investigation was to increase the capacity of an annular-retort gasifier by better temperature distribution in the heating chamber (adjacent to the annulus) and by supplemental internal heating with controlled amounts of air. Correct control of air admission should yield crude ammonia-synthesis gas having a (H2+CO)-N2 ratio of 3. Dakota Star stoker-size lignite was used during the exploratory experimental program. The effects of temperature level and distribution in the heating chamber and of addition of air to the reactor were investigated. Hydrogen - carbon monoxide ratios ranged from 1.9 to 2.5, and (H2+C0)-N2 ratios were as low as 2.9. Hourly gas production ranged from 970 to 2,580 cu. ft., or 62.0 to 164 cu. ft. per sq. ft. of heated surface, or 350 to 940 cu. ft. per cu. ft. of reactor volume. Data from the small gasifier could be readily correlated with those previously obtained in the commercial-scale unit under comparable experimental conditions.

Displacement and stress changes in cemented backfill and ore pillars at the Buick Mine, near Boss, MO, were monitored by engineers from the U.S. Bureau of Mines and The Doe Run Co., St Louis, MO. A test area in this room-and-pillar mine was backfilled to provide support when remnant ore pillars were mined. Objectives of this research were to evaluate the effect of backfill on mine stability, observe backfill conditions during pillar removal, and calibrate a numeric model to be used to design other areas of the mine. Relative vertical displacements in the backfill were measured with embedment strain gauges and vertical extensometers. Other types of instruments used were earth pressure cells (to identify loading trends in the backfill), borehole extensometers (to measure relative displacement changes in the mine roof and support pillars), and biaxial stressmeters (to measure stress changes in several support pillars and abutments). Two-and three-dimensional numeric codes were used to model the study area. With information from these codes and the installed instruments, two failed pillars were identified and rock mass properties were estimated.

Ductile hafnium was not obtained consistently by the conventional Kroll process. The bimetal reduction modification produced a more ductile hafnium by lowering the impurities, especially oxygen, in the sponge metal. Hafnium oxide was chlorinated in the presence of carbon to form anhydrous hafnium tetrachloride, which was reduced by sodium and magnesium in an inert atmosphere to produce sponge hafnium metal. After vacuum distillation to remove the byproducts, the sponge was arc-melted into ingot and rolled into strip. Metallic impurities were decreased by evaporating the hafnium tetrachloride from a fused salt. An excessive amount (over 1,200 parts per million (p.p.m.)) of aluminum was contained in some of the hafnium oxide, much of which remained as aluminum chloride in the hafnium tetrachloride during chlorination. Evaporation of the hafnium tetrachloride from a fused NaCI-KCI mixture during the Mg-Na reduction greatly lowered its aluminum content, as most of the aluminum and some of the other metallic impurities were retained by the fused salt.

Over the past decade, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has studied longwall gate road stability at four mines in the Book Cliffs and Wasatch Plateau Coalfields of Utah. These operations are characterized by multiple-seam mining, abruptly varying cover depths to 914 m (3;000 ft), and massive rigid, sandstone units in the main roof or floor. Such conditions encourage severe bumping, roof instability, and occasional floor heave problems.' Various gate road configurations have been employed to alleviate' these problems. Although the mines have comparable basic conditions, the lithologies and qualities of the immediate roof, floor; and seam ate different in each mine and often vary in a single mine. Gate road systems that mitigate hazards in one mine may prove inappropriate in another or for different areas of the same mine. This report relates the geology of the coalfields; describes the location, geologic setting, specific mining conditions, operating history, and the USBM field study and results or conclusions for each mine; summarizes the relative performance of the gate road systems; and emphasizes the need for site-specific geotechnical data to evaluate gate road conditions and performance.

"INTRODUCTION Froth flotation as applied to coal is a process for separating desirable carbonaceous material from undesirable inorganic matter. In general, the feed must be finer than one eighth inch in size. The principal use of the process in the preparation of coal appears to be in the treatment of the fine sizes produced by breakage during mining and preparation.The Bureau of Vines in Information Circular 6714 has published general information on coal flotation, summarized investigative studies of the process, and described operating plants throughout the world with their tonnage, reagent consumption and operating costs.4ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe present study of means for depressing pyrite and reducing ash ty froth flotation was conducted at the Northwest Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Wines in cooperation with the College of vines. On the other hand, a substance will not float if its surface attracts a liquid film more strongly than it does a gas film. All theories of depression depend upon this fact. A wetted particle of floatable size most likely will be found in the tailings after the flotation process has been completed.The crux of flotation is the selective wetting of the undesirable material that tends to float. Two general methods 5, 6, 7 of depression are in use: One combines a chemical substance with the surface to form a wettable compound, and the other employs some colloidal or ionic substance which the surface selectively adsorbs, thereby forming a wettable surface."

This program was conducted to demonstrate the unique advantages of suppressing methane ignition in underground mines by use of Energy & Minerals Research Company's thixogel fire extinguishing system, which stably suspends dry powder extinguishing agent in thixotropically gelled liquefied gas extinguishant. As anticipated, the project demonstrated thixogel system advantages of: 1) capability to disperse state-of-the-art powders in thixogelled Halons; 2) non-agglomerating stability for dependable expulsion; 3) stability in storage for long shelf life; 4) virtually in¬stantaneous dispersion; 5) expansive cloud formation; 6) reach and re-forming around obstacles; 7) at least twice the extinguishant effectiveness; and 8) compatibility of use with Fenwal bottles and MSHA canisters. Thus, it should prove a superior explosion/fire suppressant for coal face cutters and triggered barriers, as well as for motorized equipment, electrical equipment and the like.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines describing mining and milling methods and costs at cement-plant quarries throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically palled to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. Wood cribs are used extensively by the mining industry to stabilize mine openings. While the cost per crib is relatively low, their extensive use can result in annual mine costs of over $1 million. In an effort to improve the utilization of these supports and to reduce ground control hazards, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed engineering methods to assist mine operators in wood-crib design and employment. Design and employment criteria are established based on the strength, stiffness, and stability of the crib structure in relation to the load conditions imposed by the mine environment. Models have been developed based on full-scale tests in the USBM's Mine Roof Simulator that compute the capacity of wood cribs of various configurations and material constructions as a function of displacement of the crib structure due to roof-and-floor convergence. These models permit the comparison of the loading characteristics and costs of employment of different crib designs, and in conjunction with roof behavior models, provide a means to determine the optimum design and employment strategy.

Zirconium has possible use in industry where severe corrosion conditions are encountered because it resists attack from a variety of corrosive environments. However, very little experimental testing has been done to evaluate the corrosion behavior of zirconium when simultaneously subjected to high tensile stresses and exposed to corrosive environments. This investigation was initiated for an evaluation test, but was limited to environments consisting of ferric chloride solutions which were known to attack zirconium and were shown to promote stress-corrosion cracking in preliminary tests. Tests for cracking susceptibility were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to show the effect of stress, solution concentration, air aeration of solution, and the method of mechanical processing. Tensile stress was applied to the specimens by a constant-load method which proved more reliable than a constant-strain method.

A general computer program is given for the linear elastic static analysis of complex structural systems. These elements have special advantages for the analysis of massive underground structures such as mine structures and above ground structures such as arch dams. New finite elements are developed which are useful in the analysis of two and three dimensional solids. Examples are given which illustrate the accuracy of the elements. A description on the use of the program and a FORTRAN IV listing are given in the Appendices.

In 1943, the Federal Bureau of Mines began a program of thermodynamic investigations of petroleum constituents and related compounds. These systematic, long-range studies, which were conducted in the thermodynamics laboratory of the Bartlesville Petroleum Research Center and are still continuing, have resulted in a substantial quantity of data valuable to the petroleum industry and science in general. As separate phases of these studies were completed, the findings were promptly reported in the scientific press. During the past 16 years, 89 journal articles, giving the results obtained for individual compounds and small groups of related compounds, were published, mainly in the Journal of the American Chemical Society and the Journal of Physical Chemistry. In addition, members of the Bureau staff have contributed six chapters to specialized reference books. This circular, prepared in response to many requests, lists these 95 published papers, giving an abstract of the contents of each, as well as titles, authors, and literature citations. The journal articles are listed in the order of their preparation, which closely approximates the chronological order of their publication; hence, the item number to the left of each citation corresponds to the assigned contribution number. For the convenience of the reader, the abstract section is followed by a condensed bibliography, arranged alphabetically by senior author and keyed to the abstracts by appropriate contribution numbers in parentheses after the entry.

The preface of the United States Bureau of Mines Manual of First Aid Instruction contains the following paragraphs: One of the most important inquiries that Congress has authorized the Bureau of Mines to conduct relates to health condi- tions among those engaged in the mineral industries. Investigations made early with a view to bettering these conditions demonstrated the need of prompt care of injured miners, as, under the difficulties inherent to mining and other mineral industries; wounds seemingly unimportant, if not treated promptly, may become infected and possibly cause permanent crippling or even death of the porach. In the past many seriously injured persons have been treated by fellow workers ignorant of approved means of treatment and transportation and have been handled in such a manner as to cause suffering and to accentuate injuries to such a degree as to bring about permanent disablement. Accordingly, the need of general instruction in first aid became apparent. It must be recognized that the conditions in and about the mines, mills, smelters, quarries, oil fields, etc., usually present difficulties not found in large industrial centers where experienced surgeons are available and hospitals close at hand. Many mines are isolated and, when an accident occurs several miles underground, there may be a serious lapse of time before the injured person can be brought to the surface and taken to the hospital or given attention by a sur- geon who may have to come a long distance. Under such conditions it has been frequently demonstrated that, if effective first aid is not given, the injured person may die or become permanently crippled... First-aid instruction has been found to be an excellent aid3in pre- venting accidents. This publication is a revision of the first of a series of four Miners' Circulars originally prepared and issued in 19'29 for use in a course of training designed to prepare mine officials to organize men for rescue and recovery operations. These circulars were revised in 1937 and 1938 and again in 1948. This circular (Miners' Circular 33) discusses mine gases and methods for detecting them. The second of this series (Miners' Circular 34) gives instruction in Bureau of Mines methods of sampling and analysis of mine gases; the third (Miners' Circular 35) describes methods and equipment used for protection against mine gases; and the fourth (Miners' Circular 36) explains procedures used in sealing and unsealing mine fires and in recovery operations after mine fires or mine explosions.

The Bureau of Hines and industry (mining and private) have studied the placement of hydraulic sandfill in deep-vein mines to identify existing problems and to develop techniques to strengthen the support characteristics of the sandfill. The hydraulic sandfill system, physical properties of typical classified mill tailings, and properties of sandfill modified by various techniques are discussed. Computer analysis has defined the support capability of various sandfills using actual mine field data as a reference base. High-modulus sandfill can provide adequate support in deep-vein mines to alleviate rock and pillar stresses and to reduce rock-burst incidence.

This paper presents one of a series of digests of foreign mining legisla- tion and court, decisions which is being prepared in advance of a general report relative to the right of American citizens to explore for minerals and to own and operate mines in various foreign countries. This interpretation of the laws of Latin America has been prepared from the best available information in Washington, but is released subject to correction and amplification, if necessary, by the proper American diplomatic and consular officers, to whom it is being referred through the courtesy of the Department of State. Individual abstracts of the laws of each of the countries herein discussed have been prepared and published separately. This general summary is presented for the use of mining engineers and investors whose interests extend over the borders of a single country. It is also designed to bring out certain general principles of mining law and, so far as feasible, to indicate the trend of mining legislation in South and Central America. In order to gain perspective, the details of legislation are not com- pletely covered in this paper, but an effort has been made to bring out essential differences as well as points of similarity in the laws of the various countries. The course of legislation is first traced chronologically and the points discussed are then arranged in tables in somerhat greater detail. .Si. With a very few exceptions the existing mining legislation of Spanish America is a development, of the Spanish "Law Decree of Bases" (more briefly referr- ed to as the "Decree-Bases") of 1868. This in turn was influenced, particularly in its classification of minerals, by the French law of April 21, 1810.
