A full-scale Deister column was operated in parallel with the conventional cleaning bank of cells and a pilot Jameson cell in parallel with the conventional rougher cells. Flotation column performance was appreciably enhanced by use of an improved washing system and an internal launder. The performance of the rougher bank of cells, Jameson cells, cleaner cell bank and column were described by simple linear functions. These allowed calculation of overall circuit recoveries and evaluation of alternative circuits. An evaluation procedure based on a financial criterion is demonstrated with a simplified example, illustrating how revenues and operating margins are often of more concern than concentrate grade and recovery

This paper outlines the the methods currently being used in the West Wales Area for preventing the occurrence of any outbreak of spontaneous combustion. Stress is placed on the importance of correlating the position of a Rider Seam which is prone to spontaneous combustion. The recent introduction of the UNOR Recorder has contributed to the ability to monitor the CO content of the general body of the air during any incident. The use of modern sealants and improved methods of applying them have enabled the few instances of spontaneous combustion in South Wales to be treated promptly and efficiently. The authors describe the current spontaneous combustion problems at two collieries.

In this method the state of an open-pit mine is represented by the number of benches that are mined in each predesigned mining phase (or pushback). Consequently, a specific mining schedule can be represented by a sequence of states which starts with the topography of the mine site and ends with the ultimate pit. For a given set of mining phases all feasible states are first generated and sequences of states are then evaluated for technical and economical feasibility. The best sequence, which gives the maximum net present value (NPV), is found by applying a dynamic programming optimisation algorithm. The algorithm also optimises the cut-off grade which satisfies the mill feed requirement for each planning period. It was found that the algorithm can be used not only for scheduling but also as an effective tool for analysing the effects of mining and milling capacities and cut-off constraints on the mining schedule and the total NPV. The algorithm, which was programmed in C, was successfully applied to a large Au-Cu deposit

Mechanical data from a rockbolt drilling machine, such as torque, thrust, revolution and stroke, are useful for understanding the geological and geomechanical conditions around roadways and hence selecting the optimum bolt type and density. Laboratory experiments showed that the level of torque or thrust reflects differences in rock type, with separation of strata and cracks appearing as a specific pattern. Algorithms of neural networks based on adaptive resonance theory and back-propagation were used to extract the pattern and estimate the location of discontinuities. For field testing in an underground coal mine, a prototype data acquisition system was attached to a portable drilling machine. Several sets of logging data from one locality were combined to construct a two-dimensional model of the strata, from which the slope angles of discontinuity faces could be estimated

Gold mineralisation in the gabbro sills is mainly stratabound to quartz- and Fe-rich, granophyric-textured units and is sited in undeformed, brittle quartz vein sets, which form pipe-like orebodies. Hydrothermal wallrock alteration consists of hornblende-plagioclase-calcite-quartz with minor biotite, garnet and chlorite and with arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite as the dominant sulphides. Geothermobarometric data suggest that gold was deposited at around 520 degrees C at 2.8-3.8 bar. Mineralisation is thought to have occurred during amphibolite-facies metamorphism. Fluid inclusion and isotope data indicate that gold mineralisation was the result of deposition from a low-salinity H2O-CO2-CH4 fluid of either metamorphic or magmatic origin. Although the Three Mile Hill deposit differs from others in the area in its wallrock-alteration assemblages, peak-metamorphic timing of gold deposition and distinct geochemical associations it forms a brittle stratabound ore body which suggests structural and gold-depositional mechanisms in common with those of the other gabbro-hosted gold deposits

Large, unpredicted ground movements resulting from open cast or underground mining present risks to the safety and economy of extractive industries. As large, sudden failures are usually preceded by small displacements at a much slower rate, the detection and monitoring of these minor changes to the ground surface provides a means of assessing the risks. It is recommended that a visual approach is often preferable to surveying or fixed instrumental measurements. An optical system has been devised, incorporating a 35 mm camera, which allows an immediate comparison on site between a colour transparency taken on a previous inspection and the scene it represents. The observer fuses the transparency stereoscopically with the directly viewed scene. The impression is close to that of normal vision except that differences in detail which have occurred since the transparency was taken are immediately obvious, enabling a qualitative assessment of changes to be made on site. If repeat photography is required it can be taken with exactly the same alignment and coverage. The two images are then available for office analysis using simple micro-photogrammetry

A study was carried out which aimed to: determine the effects of blasting on excavation perimeters and nearby slopes; establish a low-cost blast monitoring and field observation programme to determine peak particle velocities and blast damage; and to develop criteria for observable blast damage that are based on the peak particle velocity. Full-scale production blasts in a large open pit copper mine were monitored and studied to develop damage criteria for various rock types. Better blast designs can be achieved by correlating the results of blast monitoring with field observations of damage at the pit walls and on benches. Back-break and damage are related to blast-induced ground vibration. Peak particle velocity is accepted as a reliable measure for the prediction of ground vibration levels. Empirical models for the estimation of rock damage can be developed and used for blast design. The models are used to determine the zones of damage within the rock face. Rock damage models can also be used to design trim shots to achieve further reduction of back-break in more critical areas

Geomechanical factors at the mine are important and will become even more relevant as the pit expands and deepens. To address these demands a team was assembled to collect geomechanical information and perform numerical analysis. The west wall is the largest and flattest of all the design sectors in the pit and rigorous studies were carried out on this wall. The wall behaviour is controlled mainly by a set of steeply dipping joints within the slope in the Fortuna Granodiorite and a weak zone, the Zona Plastica, that extends vertically near the pit bottom. These features lead to large toppling displacements in the upper portions of the wall. Two numerical models were used to reproduce the general features of failure observed in the wall. The modelling indicated that a toppling mode of failure results from shear on the steeply dipping joints. The toppling leads to slumping or landslides whereby the west wall flows slowly downslope as the Zona Plastica compresses

The nature of fracture and factors that control the extent of fracture in the tumble-drum and drop-tower tests have been identified. The product-size distribution, on which the standard strength indices for these tests are based, and the breakage rate constants depend on a number of factors other than the strength of the lumps. The standard indices and rate constants are meaningful only in a comparative context and for events whose loading mechanism is similar. The results of experiments on three Australian ores, from Yandi, Koolan and Mount Whaleback, are used in combination with fracture mechanics theory to explain why different tumble-drum standards have been found to be fully consistent. A more meaningful measure of strength could be the parameters of the Weibull function, scatter and average strength

Paper presented at a meeting on: Artificial intelligence in the minerals sector, held in Nottingham, UK, 20 April 1993. The design and scheduling of open pit operations are consistent problems encountered by the surface mining industry. Numerous techniques and algorithms have been developed to assist the mining engineer in the creation of optimum development strategies. Virtually all the practical techniques that have been produced have concentrated on one of the aspects (limit definition or scheduling) at the expense of the other. It has long been recognised, however, that the two activities are intrinsically linked and thus solving either problem independently of the other can only ever produce sub-optimal results as a whole. This has been termed the "circular reasoning problem". It has also been recognised that, for all practical-sized situations, solving both problems simultaneously is virtually impossible using conventional techniques due to the massive size of the search space involved. A technique is presented which is based on a self-learning genetic algorithm, which provides a combined pit limit and extraction schedule simultaneously in order to maximise the NPV (net present value) of the extraction. The theory is developed in two-dimensions and a number of examples of its application are presented. It is proposed that this approach is a highly efficient, heuristic technique offering the potential to transcend the circular reasoning difficulties of separate pit limit and extraction scheduling systems. Extension of the technique into three-dimensions and its application to realistic problem sizes are discussed

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralisation related to mafic and ultramafic rocks, held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. The Zinca area was chosen as a suitable location for an investigation of the weathering and secondary dispersion of platinum group metals from the Zone. It was concluded that platinum is immobile while within weathered rock, its mineral phases tending to alter from primary sulphides and tellurides to secondary Pt-Fe alloys. Palladium is variably mobile in weathered rock. In stream sediments Pt occurs mainly as small, dense, discrete particles, giving rise to a nugget effect, whereas Pd probably occurs as much finer particles or chemically adsorbed on to a suitable substrate. Pt shows a rapid decrease in sediments downstream from mineralisation, whereas Pd has a much slower downstream decay

Studies have been made of interfacial turbulence occurring in reactions in which indium, zinc and cadmium, dissolved in amalgams, are oxidised into aqueous phases by ferric or mercurous ions. It has been found that this turbulence occurs when the concentrations of oxidising ions in the aqueous phase become sufficiently great. These concentrations are the same as those at which the mass-transfer coefficients in the aqueous phase increase sharply when both phases are stirred by gas bubbles rising through them. The effects of gas flow rate on the mass-transfer coefficients for zinc in mercury have been established, and the oxidation of pure mercury has been investigated. The relevance of the work to processes involving liquid metals is discussed

Fine tungsten was used to mimic gold and fine and coarse silica and magnetite to mimic gangue. The optimum flow rate of fluidisation water varied from 1.7 l/min for fine silica to 5.6 l/min for coarse magnetite. Overloading at optimum flow rate was then investigated. With fine silica gangue no overload occurred under any of the conditions studied, and there was very little overload with fine magnetite. Coarse silica caused appreciable overload, but only after a significant bed of tungsten had been formed; with fine magnetite gangue the onset of overloading occurred earlier. Finally, with coarse magnetite severe overloading occurred almost immediately. Overloading was modelled using a first-order kinetic rate constant for erosion of the concentrate bed and a critical mass of constant above which it takes place. The results clearly demonstrate the importance of removing oversize to maximise recovery, particularly with a high-density gangue

Mineral exploration carried out in Ireland since the mid-1950s has resulted in the discovery of ore deposits that are now in production atTynagh (Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag), Silvermines (Zn-Pb) and nearby Ballynoe (barite), and Gortdrum (Cu-Ag-Hg); a major Zn-Pb deposit at Navan that is now being drilled prior to development; potentially productive deposits at Keel (Zn-Cd-Pb), Ballinalack (Zn-Pb) and Aherlow (Cu-Ag); and a number of interesting prospects, including one of spodumene. Underground exploration of a formerly extensively mined copper deposit at Allihies has outlined new, albeit currently uneconomic, reserves at depth. The copper and pyrite deposits at Avoca have in recent years been re-explored and are now again being worked. Most Irish ore deposits are in the lower half of the Lower Carboniferous succession of limestones and subordinate shales and sandstones, and this stratigraphic zone is being most intensively explored at present. Other geological units under active exploration are Ordovician sediments-volcanics belts, Caledonian granites, and parts of the Old Red Sandstone and Dalradian series. Surface prospecting is made difficult in many places by glacial and other superficial deposits, including peat and alluvium. Geochemical prospecting methods have been outstandingly successful and primarily responsible for most new discoveries. Boulder hunting and outcrop prospecting have proved effective in detailed investigations of geochemically anomalous areas. Some parts of the country have been covered by three separate airborne geophysical surveys, albeit without success so far. The induced polarisation technique, the most widely used ground geophysical method, has contributed to several discoveries. The scope of application of electromagnetic surveys is more restricted than that of induced polarisation, but the method has been effective in a few cases and has contributed to the Tynagh discovery. To date, the resistivity and self-potential methods have found little application. Magnetic surveys are not applicable directly in the search for ore deposits of the various known types, but can be helpful in outlining geological structures in some areas. The gravity method has been used successfully in a survey over the Zn—Pb deposit at Navan ; it has also proved effective in trials over a blind sulphide deposit at Tynagh that cannot be detected with geoelectrical methods. Adsorption, electrokinetic and flotation studies were carried out. The maximum density of adsorption of guar gum was obtained at pH 7.5 on sphalerite and at pH 11.5 on galena. Flotation recovery of sphalerite was reduced only marginally by the presence of guar gum in the pH range investigated, whereas recovery of galena was reduced to about 20% at pH 12. Differential flotation tests on binary mixtures indicated that 10 ppm of guar gum can depress galena and separate it from sphalerite at around pH 12.1. Co-precipitation tests confirmed the formation of a metal ion-guar gum complex in the bulk solution, suggesting that this is the precursor to adsorption. The adsorption isotherms for both minerals followed Langmuirian behaviour, but adsorption of guar gum on galena was significantly higher than on sphalerite and dissolution tests indicated that the concentration of Pb ions released from galena was an order of magnitude greater than that of Zn ions dissolved from sphalerite

DETA exhibits a highly selective depressant action on pyrrhotite without adversely affecting the collectorless flotability of pentlandite and chalcopyrite in nickel-copper ores of the Sudbury region. A simplified Eh-pH diagram has been constructed to illustrate the extended stability of elemental sulphur and to explain the collectorless flotation of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Cu and Ni ions, which are known to exist on the surface of pyrrhotite, promote the flotation of this mineral whether a collector is present or not. Thermodynamic calculations indicate that the action of DETA involves the sequestration of Cu and Ni ions from surfaces under a wide range of redox conditions; analysis of flotation test filtrate indicates as much as a 20-fold increase in the concentration of Ni and Cu ions. It appears that DETA may enhance the self-hydrophobicity of chalcopyrite and pentlandite by exposing more of the sulphur-rich surface sites for bubble contact in flotation. The following procedure was used to determine cut-off grades: define the orebody profile; plan the stope layout and quantify the work involved; formulate equipment-performance norms; calculate unit costs; input process recoveries and metal prices; and calculate the cut-off grade. Use of the method is illustrated using data from a copper mining complex in India. Results from the study led to the following conclusions for underground mines in general. Cut-off dependent costs vary significantly with the stoping method employed, orebody thickness, the degree of mechanisation and the working efficiencies of the workforce and equipment. This applies even within the same deposit. Sub-level stoping and its variants can be operated at a lower cut-off grade than cut-and-fill and its variants. Thinner orebodies affect cut-off grades adversely, but with thinner orebodies very little further reduction in cut-off grade can be achieved once a certain minimum width has been exceeded. For the same stoping method and in the same mine the cut-off grade varies with the degree of mechanisation. Labour-intensive methods require higher cut-off grades. An allowance for working efficiency should be made when calculating cut-off grades. Higher process recoveries allow a significant lowering of cut-off grades

In the Box-Wilson method, the correlation between dependent and independent variables is represented by a polynomial response function, whose constant and coefficients are determined by applying regression analysis to the experimental data collected. The five levels used for each variable consist of a minimum, a maximum and three intermediate values. A study was carried out using Ni-Cu ore from Sudbury, Ontario, in which 15 experiments designed according to the Box-Wilson method were carried out in random order and in duplicate. The two sets of replicate data showed close similarity, with an overall variance of 0.311 for the five parameters studied. The response functions were used to optimise frother dosage, collector concentration and air flow rate and an experiment was then carried out under the optimised conditions; the results agreed closely with those predicted by the response functions

The deposit lies in amphibolite-facies biotite granite-gneisses of Proterozoic age, 4 km east of a major crustal break known as the Ifewara-Zungeru fault. Gold mineralisation is contained in a zone of quartz-carbonate (mainly calcite) veins and hydrothermally altered gneisses with associated small-scale intrusions along a steeply dipping second-order fault zone that roughly parallels the main fault. Gold is present mainly at grain boundaries between quartz and carbonate as discrete particles up to 100 micrometres in size, in general association with sparse, scattered pyrite, pyrrhotite and some base metal sulphides. Adjacent to the gold-bearing zone the granite-gneisses have been hydrothermally altered with minor volume increase, most notable enrichment being in K2O, S, Pb and Cu (and Au). High concentrations of Th, Y, Ce and Zr in the granite-gneisses imply derivation from S-type granites. It is likely that their high heat production capacity maintained the high temperatures needed to transport gold in the hydrothermal systems. It is most probable that the mineralisation dates from the Pan-African orogeny (650-450 Ma)
