THE Buchans ore bodies are located in central Newfoundland, three miles north of Red Indian lake. The townsite of Buchans was named after a Royal Navy Captain who, while attempting to make contact with the Beothuck Indians, camped in the area in 1820. Ore was first found at Buchans by a Mic Mac Indian, Matty Mitchell, who discovered one of the three small orebodies in the bed of the Buchans river. The Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company, which holds mineral rights in the area, developed the orebody, but was forced to give up the venture because of difficulties encountered in separating the various sulphides. The American Smelting and Re-fining Company developed a flotation process which was capable of economically separating and concentrating the various sulphides, and, in 1926, they took a long-term lease on the property.

"The iron ores of the Kiruna Mine in Sweden are of exceptional quality but for the phosphorus content in certain zones of the orebody. The prevention of mixing ores high in phosphorus with those low in phosphorus has always been of significant economic importance. The ongoing introduction of tele-mining and automatic haulage by LHDs requires new means in the field of quality control underground, as the experienced miner as well as the underground laboratory assistant no longer are involved in the process. As of 1998 LKAB has been testing prototypes of LIF Analysers for non-contact and real-time measurement of the phosphorus content of ore being transported by LHDs from the stopes to the respective ore pass assigned to a certain ore quality. The principles of the analysis of laser-induced fluorescence, the different test phases and results are described and conclusions made. With bulk sorting of ore underground the mining engineer supports the efforts of the metallurgist in the processing plant.INTRODUCTIONThe Kiruna Mine of LKAB, Sweden is the largest underground iron ore mine in the world. In the early nineties LKAB decided to develop the Kiruna orebody further down from the 775m main level to a new main level at 1045m. This development programme was realised while in the mineral processing section and in the pellet plant further capacity was added (Wyllie 1996).In addition to deepening of the mine, which opened up 330 million tonnes of ore, the exploitation of the so-called lake ore was included in the future planning, adding another 1 15 million tonnes of mineable ore. At an annual production of approximately 20 million tonnes of ore the Kiruna Mine today looks at a developed ore reserve sufficient for the next 20 years.All of the competitors’ ores traded in the world market are from open pit operations. LKAB compensates for the obvious disadvantages by continuous efforts to make the best possible use of her high quality magnetite ore deposit. This objective is realised by combined efforts in the pellet plant, the mineral processing plant and the mine. Propriety processes, latest big scale equipment and high tech solutions for automation lead to high quality sales products at a reasonable cost."

"Serrana’s concentrator, in Araxii, has capacity of producing approximately 800,000 tomes of phosphate rock per year, with a P205 grade of 36%, from ores grading between 13% and 14% P205. The annual mining rate is around 3.5 Mt and the apatite is concentrated according to the following sequence: crushing, grinding, desliming, flotation and low and high intensity magnetic separations.Two industrial flotation columns (3.0 m x 4.5 m x 14.5 m) were commissioned in 1993 as a replacement for circuits of barite and apatite fines flotation. In 1994, four additional flotation columns of the same dimensions were put into operation, replacing 42 Wemco mechanical cells (300 ft3 each), in the barite pre-flotation, coarse apatite (two columns) and tailings regrind flotation Circuits. Overall, 66 mechanical cells (300 ft3 each) were replaced by only six flotation columns, designed by Cominco Engineering Services Ltd - CESL.The present paper describes the stages of process development, pilot plant testwork and implementation of the industrial project, highlighting the most relevant aspects of each of them. The results achieved are related to improvements in flotation selectivity, gains in P205 recovery and better process control, resulting in better quality products and lower production costs. Other benefits included a decrease in flotation reagents, electrical energy and maintenance materials consumption. These factors contributed to a significant decrease in the cost of phosphate rock production at Serrana, in Araxa - M G."

Red Dog mine is the world's largest Zn producer. The deposit consists of sulphide ore zones in sedimentary exhalative (sedex) deposits, and is characterized by the presence of multiple metals and multiple ore types. The objective of the case study is to characterize seven different minerals, Zn, Pb, Fe, Ba, sPb, Ag and TOC, within eight different rock types. Geostatistical models were constructed for each variable within the eight rock types, and subsequently assembled to give 40 realizations for six 25ft benches. The stepwise conditional transformation was used to account for the complex multivariate relations. In addition to reproducing the input data, histogram and variogram, the resulting models also respect multivariate relations locally and globally. This paper documents the methodology to construct these models. A thorough validation procedure was implemented. Comparisons with blasthole data show that the conditional simulations and the long-term models agree in expected value. The main advantages of the conditional simulations are (1) the explicit accounting of multivariate relations between the data in model construction, and (2) the ability to quantify variability and uncertainty at any scale. A small exercise comparing the profit from a kriged and a simulated model is also examined. Results show that the simulation approach showed a 3% increase in profit, relative to the conventional estimation approach.

IT can be truly stated that no branch of the engineering industry has progressed more rapidly in the last few years than that of welding. In spite of depressed economic conditions, this industry has continued to advance along scientific lines, replacing the old hit-and-miss method of welding. The development work is intensive, and increased activity is recorded in every sphere of the industry, new applications of existing methods, together with new processes, being added to those already proved in practice. The general acceptance of the welding processes can be measured by their utilization as a manufacturing tool in the metal-working industries. Many manufacturers have partially or wholly adopted welding. These concerns have on their staffs welding specialists, design engineers, and metallurgists, who are qualified to design and supervise the manufacture of welded parts, at a considerable saving to the purchaser. The steady, consistent, and sound growth of welding is based upon investigation of the fundamentals of the various processes, together with their proper application. The classification of welding processes varies in different countries. In Europe, they are divided into two main classes, namely, heterogenous and autogenous. In the former, the parts are joined, as a ruler without melting the edges, and by using as filler a metal different from that of the object welded. Such welding differs from soldering and brazing in that higher temperatures are required to effect the union of the parts. In autogenous welding, the parts are joined by melting of the edges, with or without the addition of a material similar to the parts being joined.

"This paper reviews the history of Wabana Mines from 1892 to 1966, inclusive, in order to clarify the essential factors involved in the achievement of maximum mining efficiency and in the search for an acceptable product to satisfy changing market requirements. It outlines the progressive steps taken to mechanize both surface and underground operations, and forecasts anticipated performance, assuming certain major plans could have been implemented. Results of extensive research in the treatment of the complex ore are discussed. "Melt quality is crucial for both continuous and shape casting of light alloys and in order to improve it, removal of excessive inclusions, accumulated impurities and unwanted gases becomes necessary. To address this problem, a new multi-purpose high shear liquid metal treatment technology, based on intensive melt shearing by a rotor/stator unit, has been developed. The device ensures achieving uniform temperature and chemical composition and an efficient dispersion of gas and solid phases in the melt with minimal disturbance of melt surface, and can be used, among other things, for de-gassing and de-ironing of Al-alloy melts. Efficient degassing is achieved by dispersing each argon bubble into many small ones, which significantly increases the overall surface area of the bubbles and the time they remain in the melt capturing hydrogen before reaching the surface. This allows using much lower inert gas flow and mixing times than conventional rotary degassing. When applied to Al-alloy scrap, with accumulated iron, the high shear melt treatment speeds up the nucleation and growth of primary Fe-rich intermetallic particles, allowing a faster removal rate. Therefore it reduces processing times, increasing recycling productivity, and facilitates full metal circulation of secondary Al-alloys.INTRODUCTION Aluminium and magnesium alloys are widely considered in various industrial sectors for the purpose of weight saving (Polmear, 1995). In particular, they are used in the automotive sector, where components are mostly manufactured by high pressure die casting (HPDC) because of its simplicity and relatively low cost, but efficiency and mechanical properties are quite low compared with other processes. To date, the main focus to overcome this problem has been for improving the HPDC machinery (Dahle, 2001) but little attention has been paid to the opportunities of controlling the nature and quality of the molten metal supplied to the die. In this way, liquid metal treatment, which involves a variety of physical and/or chemical processing methods to improve melt quality prior casting, is crucial for both continuous and shape casting products."

"A series of new, grease-based, solvent free open gear lubricants were developed to meet the demanding service requirements of mining equipment. The use of these products has resulted in better performance under conditions of temperature extremes and in terms of longer component lives. They have gained widespread acceptance within the mining communities for such applications as the lubrication of mining shovels, draglines and ball mills.These products are WHMIS non-controlled and are environmentally acceptable. The benefits and advantages of using this type of product to lubricate mining equipment as well as the field evaluation and experience will be discussed."

"The purpose of this report is to present a generalized preliminary design and cost estimates for a typical heap leach operation such as might be undertaken in Northern Ontario. This report should be of value to anyone in the mining industry planning, or contemplating, a heap leaching operation in Ontario, either on a large or small scale. While more detailed costing and design work will obviously be required for each specific project being contemplated, the data provided in this report should enable parties to make preliminary estimates of the costs of proposed projects and should identify most of the planning and design parameters that will need to be considered.Although heap leaching has been used extensively as a low cost gold recovery method in other parts of the world for many years, it has only recently become of interest to the Canadian mining industry.In order to investigate and demonstrate the feasibility of using heap leaching in Ontario, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources in 1982, undertook to locate a private sector proponent willing to undertake a 10,000 ton demonstration project. This project was to have been carried out at a production scale under normal northern Ontario field conditions. The Ministry was to have provided technical management and design for the designated project."

In order to improve the utilization rate of blasthole and blasting effect in vertical shafts, 5 kinds of millisecond blasting model tests with three circle vertical blastholes have been conducted in various delay times with concrete as model material. The blasting effects of millisecond blasting model tests are investigated from cutting volume, cutting depth, and blasting fragmentation, then a reasonable delay time is obtained. In the middle of concrete model, there are 4 blastholes uniformly distributed in the first circle, 6 blastholes uniformly distributed in the second circle, and 10 blastholes uniformly distributed in the third circle. Each blasthole is charged with one millisecond delay electric detonator, and the rest is blocked with stemming. The depth of blastholes in the first and second circle is 180mm, which is 20mm deeper than those in the third circle. After initiation, the blasting cavity is cleaned up, then the cutting volume and cutting depth are measured. Meanwhile, the blasting fragments are gathered and have analysed by function Rosin-Rammler. The test results show that when the inner two circle blastholes initiated simultaneously and the third circle blastholes initiated with millisecond delay, the reasonable delay time is 50 ms. At this time, the cutting volume and cutting depth of blasting model are 3920 cm3 and 68 mm respectively. The fragmentation indexes of blasting fragments, X50 and X80, are 53.2 mm and 74.6 mm respectively. While when all three circle blastholes initiated with millisecond delay, the reasonable delay time is also 50 ms. At this time, the cutting volume and cutting depth of blasting model are 10705 cm3 and 118 mm respectively. The fragmentation indexes of blasting fragments, X50 and X80, are 51.0 mm and 81.7 mm respectively. The researches indicate that for millisecond blasting with multiturn blastholes, the reasonable blasting scheme is multiturn blastholes initiated in millisecond delay and the reasonable delay time is 50 ms.

Cu-0.8Cr-0.1Zr alloy were prepared by atmospheric melting. the microstructure and properties of the CuCrZr alloy after first cold rolled, solid solution, second cold rolled and aging treatment were analyzed by using optical microscope, electrical conductivity analysis and Vickers hardness tester. The results show that with the increase of the first cold rolled deformation, the grain breakage becomes more serious, and the cold hardening becomes more obvious and the hardness increases. The conductivity and peak hardness of the first cold rolled (reduction of 30% and 60%) alloys after solution, secondary cold rolled and aging treatment reaches 81 %IACS and 187 HV, respectively. However, the conductivity in the CuCrZr alloy with a higher rolling degree (reduction of 90%) after solution, secondary cold rolling and aging treatment is significantly higher, and the conductivity and peak hardness is 85.8 %IACS and 178 HV, respectively. INTRODUCTION CuCrZr alloy has been widely used in domestic industry for its excellent comprehensive properties such as high strength and high conductivity, especially in the contact wire and lead frame of high-speed railway (Sun, Tao, & Lu, 2015; Mishnev, Shakhova, Belyakov, & Kaibyshev, 2015; Zhang et al., 2016; Fu et al., 2017). In recent years, a lot of research has been done on how to improve the strength and conductivity of CuCrZr alloy. However, the high strength and high conductivity of copper alloys are contradictory characteristics. On the one hand, the addition of alloying elements is conducive to solution strengthening and aging strengthening; on the other hand, too much alloying elements in copper alloys cause defects in the lattice of copper matrix, resulting in a serious decline in the conductivity of copper alloys (Martienssen & Walirmont, 2005). How to obtain high strength and high conductivity at the same time is the main problem. At present, the main research methods are adding microalloying elements, thermomechanical treatment and severe plastic deformation to study the electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of CuCrZr alloys. For example, Xie et al. (2011) added trace Ag to the Cu-0.26 wt%Cr-0.08 wt%Zr alloy, and the size of precipitated phase Cr and Cu4Zr became smaller and the mechanical properties of the alloy were improved. Su, Dong, Liu, Li, & Kang (2004) found that the addition of trace Mg in CuCrZr alloy inhibits the growth of precipitated phase and reduces the internal stress around the precipitated phase. At the same time, the size of precipitated phase becomes smaller and the peak aging strength of the alloy is improved. Pang et al. (2013) found that adding trace Ni and Si to the CuCrZr alloy could improve the peak hardness, softening resistance and precipitation morphology of the alloy. Experiments shows that the grain size was significantly refined by equal channel angular extrusion combined with aging treatment, while the strength of the alloy was increased, and the electrical conductivity of the alloy did not decrease (Vinogradov, Patlan, Suzuki, Kitagawa, & Kopylov, 2002; Saray, 2016); Kermajani, Raygan, Hanayi, & Ghaffari (2013) showed that the strength of CuCrZr alloy can be improved by rolling at 500 °C. After 150 minutes of aging treatment, the strength and conductivity of the material increased to 431 MPa and 81 %IACS, respectively. Takata, Ohtake, Kita, Kitagawa, and Tsuji (2009) noted that the strain hardening, uniform elongation and tensile strength of the nano-precipitates produced by the mechanical heat treatment process can be notable enhanced. The mechanical and electrical properties of CuCrZr alloy can be improved by combining large plastic deformation with aging treatment in the test process (Gao, Huttunen-Saarivirta, Tiainen, & Hemmila, 2003; Huang et al., 2003; Xia et al., 2012; Zel’dovich et al., 2014).

Conflict over mineral development and its impacts on indigenous peoples occurs in many countries around the world. Canada, Bolivia and Peru have experienced mine development for centuries in areas where indigenous communities have been and continue to be affected by the mining industry. On a global basis the mining industry continues to face the challenge of implementing meaningful consultation programs with indigenous peoples. Many governments around the world have adopted sustainable development as a policy and one important element of sustainable development is minimizing social conflict. John Moffet and Francois Bregha (Moffet & Bregha, 1996), in their analysis of the role of law reform in promoting sustainable development, noted that stakeholder participation can reduce this type of conflict. Social conflict can result in expensive litigation and costly project delays for mine developers. Meaningful consultation with indigenous peoples in areas where mine development is proposed can be a critical factor in securing a social licence to operate. A report released by the United Nations in 2005, outlined the elements of a concept called ?free, prior informed consent? (FPIC) that promotes more sustainable development. FPIC provides that mineral exploration and mining should not proceed unless the mining company has secured the consent of the relevant indigenous group(s). This paper employs a comparative approach to evaluate the extent to which three active mining nations, Canada, Bolivia and Peru, require consultation with indigenous residents and adhere to the principle of FPIC. The comparative approach assists in the identification of those consultation elements in the legal regimes of each country that can minimize social conflict in mineral exploration and mine development and therefore contribute to more sustainable development. First, we examine the legal requirements to consult with and accommodate indigenous communities in Canada, a country with a long history of mineral development over a large geographic area that has entrenched in its Constitution the protection of indigenous peoples? rights. We then turn to an analysis of Bolivia, one of the most indigenously conscious mining jurisdictions that has followed the Canadian lead in entrenching constitutional protection for indigenous peoples. Third, the approach to consultation with indigenous peoples in Peru, a nation that has not adopted the Canadian and Bolivian approaches to constitutional protection of indigenous peoples rights, is considered.

Technical procedures and designs are illustrated.IntroductionThe development of high-performance heat-shrinkable materials slightly over 20 years ago proved to be one of the major technological breakthroughs in power cable accessories. Heat-shrinkable products were introduced initially for use as low-volt age cable accessories in the aircraft and electronics industry. A program of continuous development and product introduction now enables the manufacturer to offer a broad range of products for mining, industrial and utility electrical systems.With the advent of atomic energy, an important discovery was made-exposure of some plastic materials to high-energy electrons can cause the permanent crosslinking, or intermolecular joining, of adjacent molecules. Once the material has been crosslinked, it will not melt or flow at any temperature.The unique properties of heat-shrinkable products also result from the exposure of special thermoplastic formulations to high-energy electrons. Because of crosslinking, these products have perfect elastic memory. The heat-shrinkable products are supplied in expanded condition. When heated, they will shrink and tightly cover the object over which they have been placed. 'The functional and operating demands of mine cable accessories exceeded the classic electronic applications of heat shrinkable materials. These demands required a very sophisticated program to develop materials and adhesive systems that could endure the operational environment associated with the mining industry,Ease of assembly, low installed cost and operational reliability are among the main reasons for the acceptance of heat-shrinkable mine cable accessories in electrically powered mines. "Since Escondida began operations in fiscal 1991, a series of aggressive expansion projects have enabled market share to be increased and ever larger profits to be realized. This was possible due to the very large size of the ore body and its high grade - averaging 2.7% copper from startup through fiscal 1997. The situation has now changed: ore grade is falling rapidly and is projected to be only 1.55% by 2003. Since revenue is directly proportional to ore grade, while costs are proportional to quantity of ore processed, profits will begin to fall dramatically. The Phase IV Expansion Project is intended to forestall this drop in profits by increasing ore processing capacity by over 85%.The Phase IV concentrator is designed for a nominal capacity of 110,000 MTPD and the key to achieving this value is through the proper design of the grinding circuit. This paper presents the general design criteria for the grinding circuit, as well as a description of the facility.INTRODUCTIONThe Phase IV Expansion Project consists of a new copper concentrator located 8.5 km south of the existing operations, a new tailings disposal and water reclaim system, a new concentrate slurry pipeline to the coast, and added concentrate handling capacity at the port of Coloso. The new concentrator has a nominal capacity of 110,000 tonnes per day (MTPD), compared to the existing concentrator’s capacity of 127,500 MTPD. The Laguna Seca concentrator is based on using the largest and most efficient ore grinding mills now available.The concentrator has been designed for a 110,000 MTPD nominal capacity. The process design criteria for the Phase IV project were established from in-house operating information and from test work. Unlike a green field project, Escondida already had an operating plant and it processes ore from the same pit that feeds the Phase IV plant. It is expected that the current mineralization will be similar for the first 6 years of operation of the new project. Therefore, some of the current plant operating conditions were incorporated directly into the design criteria."

"The 1980s have proven extremely difficult years for many resource-based organizations. Mining companies have learned how to weather the negative effects of inevitable economic cycles. However, with some notable exceptions, such as gold mining companies, the mining industry has faced a broader and deeper round of cutbacks than any experienced since the 1930s. Downsizing has been a major issue for many mining companies as they have faced the need for dramatic staffing cost reductions in the recent past.The continuing current rapid rate of change in technology and the marketplace, coupled with increasing merger and acquisition activity, will provide an on-going need for some companies to face major reorganization. This inevitably will involve down-sizing activity in some instances.Given this scenario, it is worth reviewing the industry's past experiences to identify approaches and techniques that could prove of value in handling a future staff downsizing challenge. This paper is based upon a downsizing consultant's experiences with the mining industry and other sectors, and highlights what appear to be key staff reduction planning and process issues.Planning for DownsizingA review of companies' downsizing activities of the last few years reveals four key activity stages which need to be addressed to ensure a successful transition. These stages are:1. organization planning;2. developing cost reduction strategies;3. implementing downsizing; and4. building for the future.A business situation that is severe enough to require drastic staff cuts typically affects all aspects of a company's operations. Most mining companies have reviewed cost efficiencies in many operational areas. However, these reviews often have been short term in focus . As a result, some companies have experienced multiple downsizing; each event a response to an immediate economic threat. This has sometimes resulted in an unstable organizational environment, with severe stresses on staff morale and productivity.In the long term it is more efficient and less stressful to the organization to adopt a more comprehensive and longer-term strategy. Especially in capital intensive mining operations, it makes sense to review all areas of business activity, not just staffing."

"The processing behaviours of ores such as their liberation characteristics in comminution and their response in separation processes are affected by their mineralogical characteristics. Key ore characteristics which are relevant to processing, such as mineral proportions, mineral grain size, grain shape and mineral associations are routinely measured at the micro-scale in polished section using optical microscopes and SEM-based automated mineralogy systems. The application of X-ray micro-tomography to mineral processing provides the means to quantify these important micro-textural characteristics in three dimensions, removing the stereological issues encountered when measuring volumetric information in two-dimensional polished sections. In this paper we present several examples of ore textures to illustrate where X-ray micro-tomography can be applied successfully to obtain quantitative measures of ore characteristics which are useful in a variety of process modelling applications.INTRODUCTION X-ray tomography has been used as a tool in medicine for some years and is being applied in a wider range of fields including geology, palaeontology and mineralogy. In this paper we present some applications of X-ray tomography in mineral processing applications being developed at JKMRC. The availability of SEM-based automated mineralogy systems such as MLA and QEMSCAN has seen the increased use of quantitative mineralogical data measured in two dimensions in the design, operation and simulation of mineral processing plants. When the ore is amenable to measurement by X-ray tomography this technique can provide quantitative data for characteristics such as mineral grain size, shape, mineral associations and liberation in three-dimensions. The advantage of measuring these characteristics in three-dimensions is that the stereological issues which bias measurements made on polished sections are removed. X-ray tomography also quantifies the location of mineral grains relative to one another in space - a useful descriptor of ore texture. Like many measurement techniques X-ray tomography has advantages and disadvantages when compared to other techniques. One limitation is that the ability of the X-ray tomography system to discriminate between minerals is a function of the X-ray attenuation of those minerals. While the X-ray attenuation of many common minerals is sufficiently different for X-ray tomography to distinguish between them, there are some where the overlap in X-ray attenuation makes discrimination on the basis of this characteristic alone impossible. An example of this would be chalcopyrite and magnetite. However where the ore mineralogy is suitable to apply X-ray tomography, the technique provides some exciting opportunities to explore the relationship between texture and ore processability."

"The results of humus and overburden geochemical surveys over the Doyon, Bousquet and Page-Williams gold ore deposits are presented.These studies show that humus sampling for gold gives negative results over the Doyon deposit. The lack of response is probably caused by the presence of 1 m of relatively impermeable glaciolacustrine clay and silt that overlies 1 m to 2 m of till over the surface expression of the ore zone. By contrast, positive responses for gold occur in humus samples over the Page Williams A and C gold deposits. The ""A"" ore zone is covered by several metres of exotic calcareous till over 0.5 m to 1 m of older, locally derived till. Anomalous values for gold in humus range from 10 to 35 ppb over the orebody. Overburden over the ""C"" ore zones is much thinner, generally it consists of less than 2 m of sandy till. Trenching humus anomalies that range from 10 to 1360ppb Au uncovered the gold mineralization. The geochemical dispersal trains in till from the Doyon orebody and the Page-Williams ""A"" zone are relatively short (i.e. less than 200 m) because both deposits occur in the lee of bedrock highs that shielded them from extensive glacial quarrying. Dispersal trains from all three pyritic gold deposits can be defined using either the fine fraction or heavy mineral fraction of the till.The intensity of the gold in till anomalies over the ore zones is variable. Therefore, it would be misleading to attach rigid significant threshold gold values to overburden drilling results. Each case must be evaluated based on bedrock topography, sample density, overburden type, thickness of till, as well as size, type and orientation of the target exposed to glacial erosion."
