"In 2000-2009, Highland Valley Copper (HVC) tested new generation 660 mm cyclones supplied by various manufacturers in an aim to replace existing first generation 762 mm cyclones without success. Due to plant infrastructure limitations, new generation larger (838 and 800 mm) cyclones were not feasible. In 2010, an approach of testing hybrid 800 mm diameter cyclones was initiated by HVC. The hybrid cyclone consists of an 800 mm cyclone upper head section and the use of existing 762 mm cyclone conical sections. Three hybrid 800 mm cyclones were engineered and fabricated, targeting a throughput of 850-950 mtph and were installed in the E line cyclone cluster. Since starting operation on September 20, 2011, three hybrid 800 mm cyclones have been running at combined throughput ranges of 750 to 1050 mtph. Based on plant Daily Met Reports, the test hybrid cyclones demonstrated a decrease in misplacement of coarse copper bearing material to the cyclone overflow and better cyclone efficiency when compared to the existing 762 mm cyclones at the same throughput. The hybrid 800 mm cyclones also demonstrated significantly higher capacity per unit when compared to the existing cyclones. Based on the improvement demonstrated in the full plant trials, HVC decided to install the new hybrid 800 mm cyclones in all five grinding lines starting in July, 2012. A more detailed discussion of the full plant trials and initial results of the first complete retrofit of E line will be presented. INTRODUCTIONHighland Valley Copper Partnership (HVC) is Canada’s largest base metals mine and one of the world’s largest producers of Cu-in-concentrate. The mine, located in the central interior of British Columbia, is owned (97.5% interest) and operated by Teck Resources Ltd. In 2011, HVC produced about 210 million lbs. of Cu and 8 million lbs. of Mo. HVC’s Mill Modernization Project (MOP), which was budgeted for $475 M, is currently under intensive construction and is scheduled for commissioning in Q1 2014. The following description was valid at the time of writing this paper.The operation has been expanded a number of times since the startup of the original Lornex mill in 1972. The plant started up with two 9.75 m (32 foot) diameter primary SAG mills. It was expanded in 1981 with the addition of a 10.36 m (34 foot) diameter SAG mill. In 1988, the Highmont concentrator grinding mills and flotation section were moved and attached to the Lornex mill site. This added two10.36 m (34 foot) diameter AG primary mills to the Highland mill. This brought the total number of primary mills to five referred to as Line A, B, C, D and E: three SAG mills (A, B and C) each with two ball mills in parallel and two AG mills (D and E) each with one ball mill. Each AG mill line is equipped with one short head pebble crusher. Ball mill circuits are classified using 8 clusters of ten Linatex 762 mm cyclones to reach a target P80 330 micron (equivalent 43% +100 mesh), before the cyclone overflow product advances to the bulk flotation circuit."

"The Detour Lake gold deposit is located within the northwestern limit of the Archean Abitibi Subprovince of the Superior Province. Mineralized zones are hosted by a sequence of pillowed and massive flows, hyaloclastite units, and altered ultramafic rocks, and are commonly oriented parallel to a series of high-strain zones that are co-planar to the regional-scale Sunday Lake Deformation Zone. Early in its kinematic history, the Sunday Lake Deformation Zone placed older (2.72 Ga) volcanic rocks of the Detour Lake Formation over younger (2.70 Ga) sedimentary rocks of the Caopatina assemblage. Gold mineralization is also parallel to the position of a laterally persistent siliceous rock unit, the 2.725 Ga ‘Chert Marker Horizon.’ The Chert Marker Horizon coincides with the boundary between the mafic-dominated upper Detour Lake Formation and the ultramafic-dominated lower Detour Lake Formation. Stratigraphic and geochronological data suggest that the Chert Marker Horizon is a deformed felsic volcaniclastic unit. At a cut-off of 0.6 g/t Au, the Detour Lake deposit contains 17.26 million ounces of Au within 445.9 million tonnes of rock grading 1.20 g/t Au. Gold occurs in shear-hosted and extensional vein arrays within rocks of the upper and lower Detour Lake Formation and within the Chert Marker Horizon. The Detour Lake deposit has many of the characteristics of a greenstone-hosted, quartz-carbonate vein deposit; its very large size may be attributed to large-scale rheological controls resulting in the formation of dilatant sites in permissive rock units."

A general approach to mine backfill design, including laboratory testing procedures, is outlined in this paper. Relationships between certain design parameters are developed and the effect of other factors is discussed. It is concluded that the inclusion of backfill design calculations at an early stage of mine design can often produce over-all design economies. Not only are the data needed for backfill plant and tailings disposal area design, but also the pillar recovery method and over-all mine stability are dependent on the attainable fill properties.

HPGRs have since introduced in the 1980s (Kellerwessel, 1993; Schönert, 1988), now become integral comminution units at several minerals processing plants around the world. Even though a lot of the initial issues concerning performance, availability and wear have been addressed and solved there are still phenomena and aspects which can be improved and understood further. Schönert and Sander (2002) presented experimental results and a mechanistic model including the internal force dynamics between the rollers and the compacted bed. They derived expressions for the pressure distribution involving most of the influencing terms and effects. However, in order to solve the differential equations several of the terms vanish by assumptions. The Schönert and Sander model reflects the experimental data in many aspects but the predicted shear force distinctly deviates from the experimental results at the angular position of the peak pressure level. This finding suggests that the particle to particle interaction and breakage process in the different zones seen in Figure 1 are complex and difficult to model using analytical models. A numerical modelling approach using DEM does not require the same amount of assumptions and simplifications of boundary conditions. Hence such modelling may provide further knowledge and vital understanding. In this paper the breakage process is simulated in order to investigate the shear slip behaviour and how it relates to different operating variables. A laboratory scale HPGR corresponding to the experimental setup used by Schönert (2002) have been modelled in EDEM (DEM-Solutions). The bonded particle model (BPM) is used for modelling quartz particles (Potyondy, 2004). The breakage model strength parameters are calibrated against interparticle breakage experiments in an Instron 400RD compression device. The contact model parameters are calibrated using calibration methods developed by Quist (2015). The floating roller dynamics are modelled using a spring-damper system. Results present insights regarding the interparticle slip behaviour as well as the frictional tangential force distribution on the rollers. The simulated roller pressure distribution shows good correspondence with previously reported findings in the literature.

"In order to improve ball milling efficiency in pellet plants, Companhia Vale de Rio Doce (CVRD), experiments new technologies in Santa Luzia (M.G. – Brazil) research center facility. Pilot grinding tests have been conducted with small grinding media, size distributed from 5 to 12 mm (millpebs). Tests have been conducted on an ore from CVRD’s Usina 5 Nibrasco, in Vitória, Brazil. A sample of the regrind circuit feed was obtained and used in comparative grinding tests with two types of grinding charges: 100% balls and a blend of 70% balls and 30% millpebs by weight. According to the balls charge, the grinding media mixture has showed the following benefits: reduction of the power draw, increase of the mill capacity, reduction of the circulating load and a slight increase of the ore blaine. Following the results obtained, CVRD is going to further explore the regrinding potential of millpebs.INTRODUCTIONCompanhnia Vale de Rio Doce (CVRD) is the largest mining company in Brazil. CVRD is involved in iron, base metals, gold and bauxite industries. Moreover, CVRD operates several pelletizing plants in Brazil and in other countries.CVRD’s Center for Mineral Development (CDM) is equipped with a comminution laboratory where studies are carried out that are aimed at the optimization of existing plants at several mining sites as well as the technical and economical feasibility of new projects. The laboratory is equipped with a complete pilot plant with several mills and classifiers, enabling continuous grinding tests in grinding circuits of almost any capacity and characteristics.In January 2004, CVRD undertook to conduct pilot tests at CDM for evaluating the effect of small grinding media on ball milling efficiency. Generally speaking, it is not unusual for operators to add oversize grinding media in a conventional regrind mill. This fact originates mainly from prohibitive prices of grinding media below 25 mm due to a production capacity decrease of grinding media producers. The size of the grinding media is an important variable affecting ball milling efficiency. Use of oversize balls decreases the number of contact surface between which particles can be caught and broken."

Raising capital by issuing debt or equity is necessary in almost every corporation. In the field of corporate finance, the raising of capital is a heavily-studied topic. However, some of what is studied on this topic in corporate finance is not applicable in the mining industry. There are also many financing options that were created for the mining industry such as flow-through shares, prepaid forwards, and royalty sales. The cyclical nature of the industry makes the risk-return profile of financings more difficult to estimate than in other industries. Additionally, the methods used to assess firm value are different than other industries, as the values of orebodies are not included on balance sheets. For precious metals companies, which are a hedge against most other securities, there are additional complications with determining investor expectations and cost of equity. This thesis puts forth a decision-making framework to explain mine financing choices from the perspective of mining companies. The approach is threefold. First, all of the major equity and debt financing instruments available to mining companies are presented and analyzed. Each financing method is assessed on a wide range of criteria. Next, these concepts are applied in case studies of four companies: BHP Billiton, Barrick Gold, Teck Resources, and Noront Resources. For each company, the overall choice of financing methods is shown and analyzed. The effect of financing choices on the weighted average cost of capital (WACC) is calculated. The final section deals with case studies of individual mine finance decisions during the past two years.

"Newmont’s Phoenix mine began gold production in 2006 and has since experienced difficulties in reaching design throughput due to variability in ore hardness. In 2010, a debottlenecking study was conducted, generating multiple options to increase throughput of the existing Phoenix Mill through a series of phased expansions. An option was selected in early 2011 to increase the current concentrator capacity by approximately 25% through two phases. The first phase of the project was the installation of a secondary crushing and screening circuit in order to reduce SAG feed size from a P80 of 6 inches to 2 inches. The second phase focuses on downstream unit operations in the concentrator aiming to relieve existing bottlenecks such as flotation. This paper analyzes the design, commissioning, and operation of a recently installed SAG Pre-crush circuit (Phase 1). The design discussion will focus on concept development, flowsheet design, design criteria, process models, design limitations, and control philosophy. Discussion on the integration of operating data and flowsheet into design during engineering will be presented. Actual operating data of major equipment is gathered from the commissioning and operation of the circuit and compared to the initial design models. Conclusions will be drawn on equipment design factors used during engineering, and the success of model integration into operation. The paper concludes on the successes of the project and where improvements can be made during design.INTRODUCTIONThe Phoenix mine is located within 25 miles of the town of Battle Mountain, Nevada. The mill processes copper, silver, and gold ore. Production started in 2006 and has since struggled to reach the designed tonnage of 33,600 stpd due to the variability in ore hardness. In production year 2010-2011, the Phoenix mill average daily throughput of 33,000 stpd. In 2008, a larger primary crusher (FLS 60/89 gyratory crusher) was installed to operate in parallel with the originally supplied primary crusher (Metso 50/65 gyratory crusher), in order to provide additional capacity upfront in the circuit so that the primary crushing circuit could keep up with the mill.In 2010, a mill debottlenecking study was completed to assess the various options that could be implemented to increase the current mill capacity. The study was completed in late 2010 and contained four tonnages that Phoenix could achieve through various expansion scenarios. A single option was selected in early 2011 to increase the mill capacity from 33,000 stpd to 48,000 stpd. Assessments of the stability performance of open pit highwalls have traditionally been based on consideration of surface movement rates. Although generally accepted in industry, this approach presents challenges for establishing appropriate threshold values to allow for safe mining operations and does not address the issue of total strain. Surface movement monitoring data from a limited number of open pit mining operations in North and South America has been evaluated in terms of highwall strain, rock mass quality and inferred mechanism of instability. Threshold strain levels for key stages of highwall stability proposed from previous work have been reviewed and are generally endorsed based on evaluation of additional data. An empirical highwall strain criteria for the assessment of highwall stability performance is postulated based on the observed trends in highwall strain data from the case histories presented.

Introduction As practised during the last two years at the Vipond Consolidated gold mine, mining geology has meant the application of geology to the problem of finding, developing, and mining ore. This article reviews the results attained in Vipond mining geology as thus defined. Most effort was directed toward clarifying and interpreting the tangible physical causes of vein and ore localizations, and in the following pages these questions are dealt with in considerable detail. Discernment of the influence of rock folding and deformation on the localization of veins, and of the influence of certain structures and rocks in or near carbonaceous zones on the localization of ore-bodies, have been the main practical results of the studies. Consideration of some of the geological features of the Porcupine area, and of the geology and mining experience of the principal producing mines, has helped toward a perspective of Vipond's ore-finding problems. These features are first discussed. The background and procedure for Vipond mining geology, and the major results of the geological mapping, are then summarized. Then follows a résumé of tangible factors that influenced vein, ore-body, and gold localizations; and, next, explanations of the facts ascertained. Because they were found of little utility, many fascinating problems, such as the origin and mode of emplacement of the veins and lodes(l), the ultimate source of the ore, and the physico-chemical and mechanical agencies affecting vein and ore formation, are treated cursorily or are neglected in these notes.

"The Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited, a government of India enterprise, has constructed iron ore mining, crushing, handling and concentrator facilities at Kudremukh, in southwest India. Concentrate produced is pumped 65 km to dewatering, storage and ship-loading facilities which were built at the same time at the sea port of Mangalore.A computer-based distributed process control system was implemented for all operations at Kudremukh and to interface with and monitor the Mangalore plant.The control system is examined from various standpoints, beginning with a description of its architecture, method of process input/output connection, and major hardware items.Software considerations and process applications are then looked at, with a review of the integration of the computer vendor's system software with user-developed applications programming. A control example of crusher operations is provided.Following the descriptive segment is a discussion of the design considerations and decision factors involved in the implementation of such a system considering the type of process and the remote nature of the installation site. It ends with a review of actual operating experience and conclusions regarding both this system and future similar applications.ScopeThe following is a discussion of the computer-based process control system applied for the Kudremukh Iron are Company Limited's ore handling, concentrating and shipping facilities located in South India.A general description of the process and plant equipment will be followed by an examination of the control system from the points of view of hardware and signal flow, software requirements, design considerations, implementation logistics and operating experience. While effective in treating refractory sulfide ores, pressure oxidation leaves carbonaceous matter unscathed and able to adsorb gold from cyanide solutions. Barrick Goldstrike's strategy to mitigate this problem is to minimize contact between dissolved gold and native carbon in advance of the carbon-in-leach (CIL) process. Measures currently in use include limiting carbonaceous matter in the plant feed by meticulous blending of ore, controlling the degree of oxidation in the autoclaves and blinding native carbon surfaces with lauryl sulfate. The presence of residual cyanide and thiocyanate in the process water remains to be a cause of premature gold dissolution and loss of gold by adsorption on carbonaceous matter. This cyanide is introduced by water that is recycled from the tailing pond. Of several treatment options considered, oxidation by peroxymonosulfuric acid, also known as Caro's acid, is deemed to be the most effective. Laboratory and pilot plant tests show that Caro's acid can oxidize free cyanide, weak¬acid-dissociable (WAD) cyanide and thiocyanate, resulting in significant improvements in gold recovery downstream. The process requires Caro's acid at 125 % of the stoichiometric requirement and pH in the range of 9.5 to 10 to accomplish the desired destruction in about twenty minutes. A cyanide destruction plant is currently being designed and construction should be completed by the end of 2005.

The Darrehzar porphyry Cu deposit is situated in the Urumieh-Dokhtar magmatic suite of Central Iran. The REE and trace element data suggest that the deposit lies within a continental margin setting. Phyllic and propylitic alteration are pervasive in the area but potassic and argillicalteration are not readily recognized on the surface. This is possibly the result of super gene weathering of the surface rocks or because of an intense phyllic overprint. Poor soil development and abundant outcrop make the area suitable for a case study of lithogeochemical exploration technique for Cu deposits. A total of 262 rock samples was collected over the area and analyzed for 15 elements. The geochemical data cor-relate with the mineralogical composition of the rocks with the phyllic zone being marked by high-er concentrations of Si, Al, K, and by a high sericitization index while Ca, Mg, Sr, total Fe and Mn are more abundant in the propylitic zone. The lithogeochemical study indicates a metal zonation from a Cu + Mo-rich core to a Zn + Pb ± Ag-rich outer zone. Principal component analysis is useful for separating element associations, which in turn reflect the alteration halos. Principal components 1 and 2 depict alteration zoning, where-as 3 shows an association of Cu and Mo, that roughly defines the mineralized area.

"The gas dispersion measurement sensors and methodology developed by the mineral processing group at McGill University have to-date been employed at a number of plants in Canada, Australia, the U.S., South Africa and South America. In some cases the measurements have been directly linked with metallurgical performance while in others the gas dispersion surveys on their own have proved very useful in understanding the behaviour of the flotation cells. In addition to reviewing the current state of the gas dispersion measurement technology, the paper will present a series of case studies from the various plants and will show how this technology brings a remarkable new level of understanding to flotation behaviour. The influence of the bubble size distribution on recovery and grade are emphasized in the paper.INTRODUCTIONBackgroundThe advent of new sensors to characterize gas dispersion parameters in flotation cells is a development that is long overdue. While the chemistry of flotation has been studied since the early 1900’s, it is only now that the significance of bubble size distribution, gas rate and gas holdup can be meaningfully measured in-plant with robust and precise sensors. Early researchers, like T.A. Rickard (1916) recognized the importance of understanding the role of air and bubbles in flotation when he wrote in 1916 “we know that the key to the flotation process is to be found not in the oil, the acid, or the apparatus, but in the bubbles. The man who understands the mystery of a soap bubble has mastered the chief mystery of flotation”. In his 1999 review paper on The Froth Flotation Century D.W. Fuerstenau laments the fact that due to their “inert nature”, bubbles have never received their due attention from researchers who tended to focus on the chemical, physical, surface and colloidal aspects, rather than the physics of the process. It is perhaps fitting that now, 100 years after the inception of industrial flotation practice at Broken Hill, Australia, researchers and industry have turned their attention toward the importance of truly understanding the role of bubbles in flotation."

"The development of low-cost, rapid multielement analytical techniques has generated large geochemical databases in many exploration programs. When a sampling program consists of several thousand samples, the resulting data matrix is enormous and effective interpretation using all of the elements individually becomes burdensome. However, the application of multivariate statistical techniques can extract geochemical patterns related to the underlying geology, weathering, alteration and mineralization. Imaging the results over topography enhances the interpretation of these patterns. Examples of this approach are shown from mineral exploration programs in Canada and Mexico. IntroductionThere has been a dramatic change in the effectiveness of using geochemical survey data in the past ten years. This is mostly due to:• lower cost of geochemical analysis;• lower detection limits;• new methods of multi-element analysis;• a marked decrease in the turnaround time;and• the intelligent use of computers in presenting geochemical data.Geochemical surveys commonly have two objectives: locating abnormal concentrations of ore-forming or pathfinder elements and characterizing the underlying host lithologies. Geochemical surveys often employ a wide range of sample media that may typically include whole rock lithogeochemistry, various soil horizons, till and basal till sampling, stream sediments, lake sediments, and various forms of weathered regolith. Each of these sample media will exhibit a unique element distribution that must be factored in the interpretation phase of a geochemical survey study. This can become a cumbersome process if univariate data handling methods are employed."

The single six-in-line furnace of the Polokwane Smelter is the largest installed high-intensity furnace for platinum group metals (PGM) base metals sulphide smelting in the world. "This paper reviews the Falconbridge- SMRQ’s Raglan project in northern Quebec and the process that was used in developing its current long-term mine plan. Challenges were many and not only limited to the longevity of the project, numerous ore deposits (both underground and open pit), and a 40 km property strike length. As a result of its remote northern location, other factors such as progressive reclamation, leachable mine waste, water treatment, and waste management were also part of the plan. A combination of modern planning tools were used to formulate the plan including DataMine, Mine 2-4D, AutoMod Simulation, and an Excel-based financial spreadsheet to bring the total plan together. The focus of the paper is to show the complexity of modern mine planning and associated economic modelling of mine processes. IntroductionThe Raglan project is located 1660 km directly north of Quebec at the northern tip of the Quebec Peninsula in Nunavik. The main property is 40 km in length stretching from the Donaldson airport area at the eastern edge of the property to East Lake at the western edge. The Deception Bay port is 90 km north of the main complex/mill situated at Katinniq which lies approximately in the middle of the property (Fig. 1). The mine processes 1 000 000 tpy of ore from both open pit and underground sources. The mill is forecasted this year to produce more than 150 000 t of concentrate grading more than 18% nickel. All personnel and critical cargo are transported to the site via a company-leased 737 jet from Rouyn-Noranda where the main administration office is located. The majority of cargo is shipped to the site via Deception Bay from Quebec and on the return trip, nickel concentrate is shipped back. From Quebec, the nickel concentrate is sent by rail to the Falconbridge smelter in Sudbury and on the reverse rail haul, nickel matte from the smelter is sent to Norway via Quebec."

The responsibility and scope of the Industrial Engineering Department, as organized at the Jeffrey mine, has been broadened to include any study, project or report that could result in more effective use of men, materials and equipment. Although still emphasizing wage incentives and co t reduction, much more varied work is now done, consistent with the in-.creased complexity of industry. Additional activities now include production, maintenance and inventory control improved job evaluation, packaging, labour utilization studies, technical sales liaison, mining, milling and service department n1ethods, plant layout, and specialized project analysis. Additional techniques include the extensive use of work .sampling and standard data. A recent trend has been toward increased emphasis on industrial relations, both in introducing change to the men and in providing requested explanations to Union stewards and officers. These new responsibilities have resulted in the development of specialists in some rather narrow industrial engineering fields, as well as the necessity for industrial engineering assistance in supervisory and job training.

"The molybdenite associated with copper porphyry ores is generally treated in a flotation circuit consisting of a separation and a cleaning section. In the last few years column flotation cells have replaced the numerous counter-current stages that were previously used in the cleaning section. Despite this, little has been published regarding the number of column cleaning stages required. Therefore a Moly flotation database is assembled with the objective of verifying the existence of a common upgrading profile. This can then be used as a guide in the prediction of the number of stages required to achieve a given concentrate grade.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the first use of Column Flotation was on copper flotation products, the popularity and understanding of their operation was not really achieved until they were widely implemented in Moly circuits in early 1983. The use of columns in Moly plants has since left a legacy of information, both published and unpublished. The data collected since that time has been used primarily used to establish column operating parameters and to determine upgrading potential within the circuit.Byproduct Moly generally occurs with porphyritic copper ores in concentrations less than 0.1% MoS2. As such, piloting a new moly ore to produce, say 5 Kg/Hr MoS2, in a slurry approximately 1 Lt/min (at 10% solids), requires a moly plant feed of about 570 Kg/Hr, which translates to a mill feed rate of 200 to 800 Tonnes per day (depending whether you deal with Chilean or Canadian ores). Piloting Moly for any lower tonnage would reduce the accuracy of the testwork.Thus a need exists to collect operating data in order to establish the existence of process relationships that could be used for feasibility and design purposes.The object of this paper is to expose a preliminary relationship that could be used for the purposes described above and to apply the findings to a preliminary design of a moly cleaning circuit flowsheet."

The effects of grain refinement, mold temperature and chemical composition on the hot tearing resistance of aluminum alloys 535.0 and 206.0 has been studied by pouring constrained rod castings in metal molds. In addition, two prototype components that could be used in automotive applications were also poured from both alloys by gravity tilt-pour and low pressure permanent mold casting processes. This paper summarizes the results and issues encountered during the casting trials. It was shown that grain refinement and mold temperature ::::: 400°C reduced, and sometimes eliminated hot tear cracks in both alloys. The two prototype engineering components could be cast successfully from both alloys in metal molds. The metallurgical issues related to molten metal treatment and processing temperatures were well controlled. However, issues related to the control of hot tearing, casting and mold design must be addressed in future studies to guarantee the production of defect free castings.
