Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texasgulf Incorporated, operates the Kidd Creek mine, a 10,000- tpd base metal producer, near Timmins, Ontario. Two different ore types are mined and milled copper-zinc and silver-lead-zinc. At the highly automated Ecstall concentrator, the ores are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits. One of the most important metallurgical tools for process control is a sample system incorporating continuous onstream X-ray analysis. Recently this system was further automated by adding computer control of reagents for two copper-zinc flotation circuits. The computer programs, utilizing optimum seeking methods and smelter contract terms, have increased copper recovery 0.8% and zinc recovery 1.6%, and reduced reagent costs by 12%. Although not anticipated, copper and zinc concentrate grades were improved modestly as well.

Over the past eight years, Phelps Dodge (a division of Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold, Inc.) has developed a suite of proprietary hydrometallurgical processes for the treatment of copper concentrates as an alternative to conventional smelting and refining technology. The technical viability of two processes has been commercially demonstrated in a large scale plant at Bagdad, Arizona, designed to process approximately 52,500 metric tons per year of concentrate containing 30.5% copper. The first process utilizes high temperature (225°C) pressure leaching, followed by countercurrent solid-liquid separation, and then blending of the copper-bearing solution with low grade stockpile leach solution for subsequent treatment by SXlEW for copper recovery. The second process uses super-fine grinding, medium temperature (l60°C) pressure leaching, followed by solid-liquid separation, and treatment of high grade copper-bearing solution by direct electrowinning to recover the bulk of the copper values. The latter process will be utilized at Morenci in a commercial facility designed to treat mixed chalcopyrite-chalcocite-covellite concentrates. This facility is scheduled to start up in 2007. Other flowsheet options have been developed by Phelps Dodge for application to a variety of concentrate materials in specific situations. Examples of various flow sheet options are presented in this paper, and the advantages and disadvantages associated with each are discussed in detail.

"A laboratory and field research program was conducted to investigate the major factors influencing bond capacity of grouted cable bolts. The results indicate that cable bolt capacity most critically depends on the grout uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), the radial confinement, and the embedment length.In the laboratory &apos;split-pipe&apos; tests were conducted using P VC, aluminum and steel pipes to provide radial confinement, and field test sites were chosen in granite, limestone and shale rock masses. For both datasets higher capacities were obtained under conditions of higher radial confinement. A correlation between the two was obtained through a comparison of the radial wall stiffness of the laboratory pipes with that of the field boreholes as measured using a high pressure dilatometer. Cable bolt capacity was found to increase with embedment length though not in direct proportionality.The use of low water cement ratio grouts (<0.40) can increase cable bolt capacities by 50% to 75%. This effect is maximized under conditions of high radial confinement. However, the use of super thick grout paste (0.30 and less) may be both impractical and undesirable, first because of their limited pumpability and second because of their inconsistency in strength. Grouts with a water cement ratio of between 0.35 and 0.40 are recommended for practical cable bolt applications."

Sossego Mine was the first Vale SAG mill operation to process copper-gold ore. It is located in the state of Para, in the south-eastern Amazon region of Brazil. In the first six years of continuous operation, Vale investigated different alternatives for improving circuit performance by investigating operating conditions, mainly focusing on the SAG mill. Today, after a steady increase over five years the annual production rate seems to have stabilized. It is hoped this work will show how the SAG operating practice have been perfected with time and as new data are collected. Historical data of mill grind-outs and crash stops helped create operation curves depending on the ball charge volume and total charge volume. Also noted were impacts on throughput due to the effect of reducing liner weight and the ore type characteristics.

"THE OBSERVATIONS that follow are confined to simple wet cyclones such as the cylindro-conical unit developed by the Dutch States Mines and marketed in America under the trademark 'Dorr-Clone'. Energy to do the work comes from the inlet velocity of the feed slurry, which is usually pumped' to the unit by a centrifugal pump.Such cyclones are simply classifiers of enormous capacity and depend for their separating effect on differences in rates of particle settlement. These particle settling rates, of course, vary with particle size, particle density, particle shape, pulp viscosity, and pulp density.The dilution of the overflow product affects both pulp viscosity and pulp density. In most operations, the temperature and the composition of the liquid -hence its viscosity --are fixed, but both pulp viscosity and pulp density can be changed by changing pulp dilution.Since the separating effect depends on differences in rates of particle setting, a perfect split with 100 per cent of the particles coarser than a given size in the underflow and 100 per cent of the finer sizes in the overflow is not possible. Just how far the separation departs from this perfection can be calculated rather exactly from the following principles, which also apply to mechanical classifiers. In removing or settling out of the overflow product all particles up to a specified size, some of the finer particles must settle out simultaneously."

SHERRITT GORDON Mines Limited annually produce 300,-000 pounds of pure cobalt by processing a nickel-cobalt-copper-iron sulphide ore which is mined at Lynn Lake, Manitoba. The ore (containing 0.04 per cent Co) is •concentrated to give a concentrate containing l 1-12 per cent nickel, about 2.0 per cent .copper, and 0.25-0.35 per cent cobalt, which is treated at the Refinery in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The concentrate is leached in an ammoniacal solution of ammonium sulphate using compressed air as the oxidant. After filtration the leach solution contains, besides nickel and cobalt, copper ammines, sulpharnates and salts of various thionic acids. The copper is removed by precipitation as sulphide and the sulphur compounds converted to ammonium sulphate by a combined oxidation and hydrolysis treatment. The purified solution •Containing about 45 gpl of nickel and 1 gpl of cobalt is treated with gaseous hydrogen under pressure at 350°F to precipitate metallic nickel powder, the precipitation 'being terminated when the nickel content of the solution is about 0.8-1 gpl. "The Marvast monazite deposit is located 35 kilometres south - southwest of Marvast in Yazd province of Iran. A representative sample weighing approximately 10 tons was prepared to study the amenability of the ore to physical beneficiation. The size fraction of +1000 µm was removed due to low monazite content and the –1000 µm size fraction was concentrated by the gravity-classification-magnetic methods. According to the results of sample characterization, the representative sample contains 220 ppm REO that is contained in monazite. It was concentrated to 41.5% REO by the above mentioned methods. The recovery of REO in the monazite concentrate was 41.5%.INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements are critical metals in many countries (Gupta, 2005; UK Geological Survey, 2011). Increasing application of these metals in hi-tech industries and price fluctuation caused by Chinese production policy has led other countries to focus on their local resources (UK Geological Survey, 2011). In this case, Iran is not an exception.REE mineralization in Iran is mainly located in the central zone. Regarding the exploration data, these deposits are divided into two categories. The first group is iron ore deposits in which the REE are carried by phosphate minerals. The other group is placer deposits where monazite is the major mineral of the deposit. The Marvast placer deposit is one of these types of deposit (Daliran, 1990; Mokhtari, 2008; Torab, &Lehmann, 2007; Alipour, 2014)."

"While the uniaxial compressive strength of rock has been extensively investigated, the relation between the saturation and natural compressive strength is relatively unexplored. This paper studies on 1865 statistical data of Chongqing Rail Transit Line 1 and Line 6, which located in the Middle Jurassic of Shaximiao formation. The research focuses on the relation between the saturation and natural compressive strength. The statistical data are categorized and quantified in order to ascertain the softening properties of sandstone and sandy mudstone. The findings suggest that the saturation compressive strength is significant effected by its natural compressive strength, and an empirical formula is introduced to explain the relation. These findings have implications for researchers and engineer who concerned with Chongqing rail transit construction.INTRODUCTIONIn the engineering construction and surrounding rock classification, the uniaxial compressive strength index (Ministry of Water Conservancy, 1995; Ministry of Railways, 1999) is one of the essential parameters of rock mass. Usually, there are two types of the uniaxial compressive strength index, natural and saturation compressive strength, and the ratio of them is the softening coefficient. Most of the previous studies on rock strength had focused on the influence factors (Liu et al., 2008; Liu et al., 1998; Liu et al., 2013; Wang, 2013; Zhang et al., 2008; Zhang et al., 2010; Zeng & Lin, 2003) with experiment and in-situ tests. But few publications that reports a long and formal research project on the relationship between natural and saturation compressive strength. In order to figure out this issue, this study investigated the distribution of Solidity Classification of Rock Mass and softening coefficient based on the statistical data of Chongqing Rail Transit Line 1 and Line 6. "At Craigmont Mines Limited, Merritt, B.C., tests were begun in March, 1965 to evaluate the use of shotcrete as a method of ground support m development headings; previously, ail drifts had. required support, which was accomplished mainly by timber and occasionally by the use of rockbolts. The tests demonstrated conclusively the effectiveness of shotcrete for supporting Craigmont's ground. Gradually, the use of timber for ground support was virtually eliminated in favour of shotcrete. This paper describes the equipment used, the operation of the equipment, pertinent cast data and opera ting details. Also discussed are other uses developed for the shot-creting equipment, the use of reinforcing bar rockbolts, and a method used at Craigmont for lining long vertical ore passes with steel plate and concrete as part of the raising cycle."

ZEBALLOS is a relatively new mining camp. It is on the west coast of Vancouver island, approximately 195 nautical miles northwestward from Victoria. Previous to 1934, a small amount of placer gold had been recovered from the Zeballos river and tributary creeks. However, it was not until the winter of 1934-35, when shipments of high-grade gold ore were made from the property of the White Star Gold Mines, Limited, that lode gold mining really began. Since then, several new mines and many promising prospects have been found. Milling in standard sized mills only commenced late in 1938, when the 75-ton mill of Privateer Mines, Limited, and the 50-ton mill of Spud Valley Gold Mines, limited, were first turned over. The most striking feature of the camp is the high-grade quality of the ore as usually mined. At one property, the ore along a drift 650 feet long has ranged from 5.8 ounces per ton to 17.5 ounces, over average vein-widths ranging from 8.3 inches to 14.5 inches in selected blocks along the drift. One . high-grade shipment of 196.6 pounds of ore from the same property contained 142.877 ounces of gold. The present paper deals only with that part of the area in which mining operations are most active, namely the main Zeballos River valley and its tributaries, Spud and Goldvalley creeks. During the summer of 1938, prospecting was carried on beyond this circumscribed area. The geology and early developments in the area have been described in the following reports: (1) CLOTHIER, G. Introduction It is only fitting on this occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the incorporation of the Institute that we should indulge in a bit of retrospection and review the progress that has been made within this period in the various branches of the mining industry- progress that is so closely associated with the members of this Institute. Such a moment of retrospection will enable us better to appreciate the present status of the industry and to perceive more clearly the trends that should guide us in making sound plans for the future. The past half century has been a period of amazing industrial progress in Canada. In this period, the economy of our country has changed from one based chiefly on agriculture and the export of raw materials, to an economy based largely on a well integrated manufacturing industry. In all&apos; o( these major developments, industrial minerals have played an important part and will play an increasingly, important part in the future. By ?industrial minerals? we mean the various non-metallic minerals (exclusive of fuels) as well as the rocks, sands, and clays used for industrial purposes. They are now used so widely and in such large quantities that modern industry could not function without them, and their continued availability at low cost is vital to the industrial future of Canada. The key position occupied by industrial minerals in modern Canadian industry was well illustrated two years ago when a strike occurred in the only Canadian plant producing soda-ash and calcium chloride at a time when those materials were already in short supply and unavailable from other sources. Within a short time of the shutdown of this plant, in which the two principal raw materials are limestone and salt, the great aluminium reduction plants on the Saguenay river were forced to curtail operations because of the lack of soda-ash, essential to the process of extracting aluminium from its ore. Automobile production, already harassed by a shortage of steel, was further hampered when glass for windshields and windows could not be supplied because the glass industry was slowed down almost to a standstill for want of soda-ash. Soap became almost unobtainable both to the housewife and to industrial users, because soda-ash is required in its manufacture. As a consequence of the soap shortage, the production o synthetic rubber at Sarnia was threatened because soap in large quantities is essential to the polymerization process. Motorists on gravelled highways all over Eastern Canada drove through clouds of dust because calcium chloride, used for dust laying, was not to be had. There were other cases of dislocation of industry related to the shutdown of this particular plant, but the above illustrates the wide ramifications of industrial minerals in modern industry. However, it is extremely doubtful if many Canadian citizens realized that these apparently unrelated happenings were connected in any way with limestone and salt.

"The magnesite flotation operation of Magnesita Refractories, in Brumado – Brazil, has four parallel ball mills working in closed circuit with hydrocyclones to grind the ore for the reverse flotation of silicates in mechanical cells. The modification proposed here opens the circuit for three of the ball mills so that their products are collected together to feed a high frequency screen. The oversize of the screen feeds the fourth ball mill in closed circuit for secondary comminution. The product reports to dewatering and flotation. The undersize undergoes desliming and subsequent flotation operation. According to pilot tests performed, the modification on the magnesite flotation operation will promote a 20% increase in the productivity, 8.5% increase in mass recovery and a 26% reduction in water consumption. The gains are due to the fact that the silicates in the feed are concentrated in the smaller particles (<100µm) with over grinding in the existing closed comminution circuit, making it impossible to take advantage of this natural selectivity. The combination of open circuit, more selective milling, and the high frequency screen, ensures high efficiency particle size classification. This renders the process more effective, both to the screen undersize with its high contents of silicates and fines, and to the screen oversize, which is almost without fines and has a higher magnesite grade. This situation allows for the setting of specific parameters for the flotation of both the primary milling undersize and the secondary milling product.INTRODUCTIONMagnesita Refractories, with its operations site in Brumado, is the largest producer of high purity dead burned magnesia (DBM) in Latin America. The magnesite ore is extracted from an open pit mine, named Pomba, after which it is crushed and handpicked. Due to the presence of disseminated silicate the ore has to be ground and concentrated by means of reverse flotation, before feeding the high temperature kilns for sintering and conversion to DBM.The magnesite flotation unit has an impact crusher to reduce the size of the feeding ore, which is transported to the mills by conveyor belts. The milling operation is composed of four ball mills in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. The closed circuit generates a high circulating load with excess fines, which is detrimental to the selectivity of the desliming and flotation operations, reducing both mass andmetallurgical recovery.In the current scenario, the capacity of the flotation plant is insufficient to meet the demand of the DBM kilns, forcing the operation to work with high purity ores in order to attain the highest possible mass recovery in the concentration process. This is not an ideal situation as it requires the mining site to work with higher stripping ratios.The objective of this work was to improve the magnesite flotation unity to increase its productivity. After a detailed analysis, the milling was identified as the limiting process, which made the authors to focus on this operation."

"IntroductionOver the past twenty-five years of improvements to scooptrams In the Ontario Division of Inco Ltd., records indicate that on average, an 8 yard capacity machine at 80% availability will load, haul and dump about 100TPH from an average stoping area. This, essentially, means that Inco mines are limited to 2000 TPD as an approximate maximum production cap per minute. Some of the improvements made to scooptrams over this period have been:• dry disc and oil immersed brakes on larger loaders;• to replace air over hydraulic systems;• modulated shift transmissions;• greater breakout and tramming capacities by using larger engines and buckets;• operators&apos; compartments have been enlarged and better seats,• joystick controls and air-conditioned cabs have been utilized&apos;• major cost savings have been realized through tire maintenance improvements; and• major savings, safety improvements and increased ore recovery by using remote controls.After reciting the improvements listed above, and the list is by no means exhaustive, it is quite obvious that scooptrams are a mature product and that major design or performance improvements will not occur in the futre. Any futher improvements will be incremental in nature. Loading, hauling, and dumping with scooptrams is a batch process and as such is limited in its total output.Continuous Load/Crush/Convey Systems:In order to improve productivity, a radical new system was required. The target was 2000 tons per shift. In 1984, to meet the goal, Inco acquired the rights to a contiunous loader from Canadian Mine Services. Inco made modifications to the original prototype machine, such as: (I) conversion from rail mounted to crawlers for increased mobility; (2) a hydraulic cooling system was added; (3) flight bars were changed from cast to forged; (4) motor horsepower increased to 200 hp from 150 hp. Emerging from these modifications came a machine known as the CL-looo Oscilloader (Fig. 1).The CL-looo Oscilloader is an electric hydraulic 35-ton machine which is crawler mounted and has a drawbar pull of 30 tons. It has an adjustable frequency, oscillating lip which simulates the digging action of a manual .shovel. This action agitates and lifts the muckpile enough to allow it to settle by gravity onto the chain and flight conveyor table which then removes the ore to the tail end for discharge into either a crusher, a conveyor, a truck, or a combination of these.Late in 1985, six oscilloaders were fabricated and put into Inco mines for field trials. At Creighton Mine some early field trials were conducted with a rail mounted continuous loader loading directly into 140 cu.ft. Granby cars. Much of the field testing was in VRM drawpoints with the Oscilloader loading into 20-ton trucks or into Teletrams . At Levack Mine, by puttmg the truck on remote control, it was possible to have the operator run the Oscilloader and load his own truck (Fig. 2). At McCreedy West Mine, Copper Cliff North Mine, and Copper Cliff South Mine, the Oscilloaders discharged directly into 26-ton trucks."

As an occupational culture, mining comes with its own set of rules, agendas and values. Yet mines often also operate in the traditional territories of indigenous communities, with whom specific agreements are negotiated that commit to respect culture, economy and environment. Mines in these locations employ extremely diverse workforces whose value systems often come into conflict in on-the-job relationships. Adaptation of individual worker attitudes and industrial operating culture thus both need to occur if there is to be the negotiation of a workable relationship. This paper will discuss ways that NWT diamond mines have adapted to their workforce, to ensure that rights and cultures of their diverse workforce can be respected. Historically, the concept of culture has been dealt with solely through the forum of ?cross-cultural? workshops. Gibson presents a model of a new type of ?cultural-engagement? workshop based on the top ten cross-cultural conflicts that actually arise at a remote mine-site. This model helps managers, team leaders, and workers to tackle in-mine conflicts that arise based on differing value systems of aboriginal and non-aboriginal workers and management. In addition, Gibson suggests that the concept of culture must be more rigorously applied throughout the mine structure and not discussed only in the forum of the cross-cultural workshop.

"Grinding tests were conducted on an oxidized copper-cobalt ore using a pear-shaped ball mill. Twelve mono-sized ore fractions were prepared and wet ground batchwise. The mill was run for 0.5 to 30 min intervals. The shortest interval provided data more closely related to the breakage function (B) because less secondary breakage was hypothesized. Some selection function (S) and B parameters were determined. Remaining parameters were estimated using a population balance model simulator. To evaluate the kinetics model, an unsized ore sample was also milled. Predicted and measured particle size distributions (PSDs) agreed well, suggesting that S and B parameters can be used for continuous operation mass balances.RÉSUMÉ Des essais de broyage ont été menés sur un minerai oxydé de cuivre-cobalt à l’aide d’un broyeur à boulets piriforme. Douze fractions de minerai de dimension unique ont été préparés et broyés en voie humide en lots. Le broyeur était mis en route à des intervalles de 0,5 à 30 minutes. L’intervalle le plus court fournissait des données plus étroitement liées à la fonction d’abattage (B) car d’après l’hypothèse avancée, le besoin d’abattage secondaire était moindre. Certains paramètres de la fonction de sélection (S) et de B ont été déterminés ; les paramètres restants ont été estimés à l’aide d’un simulateur de modèle d’équilibre de population. INTRODUCTIONSize reduction of solids is a very energy intensive and highly inefficient process. It consumes approximately 5% of the electricity produced worldwide (Rhodes, 1998), and more than 50% of the total energy used in mineral processing plants (Walkiewicz, Lindroth, & Clark, 1996). An increase in grinding efficiency can therefore result in significant reductions in operating costs. This often amounts to determining the optimal design configurations for milling an ore sample in a laboratory mill under standard conditions. Prior to optimizing the milling stage, the requirements for downstream processing in terms of particle size distribution (PSD) need to be understood because low liberation and overgrinding will lead to future problems. Once this is done, it is also important to clearly understand the breakage properties of the ore. The kinetics of size reduction in tumbling mills are often determined using two probabilistic functions: selection and breakage (Austin & Luckie, 1972). Knowledge of the selection and breakage functions also enables the prediction of the PSD for a given ore sample."

The results of complex processing sulphide copper ore and advantages of recovery of copper by vat and heap leaching, sorption, cementation and electrolytic solutions processing and utilization of waste material after heap leaching of copper for production of building materials were investigated. The combined chemical solvents with the additives of oxidizing agents are developed at the KazNTU. The solvents are inorganic or organic chemical reagents, which form complexes of Cu, Au, Ag, Pt, Ni, Sr, Co etc. Recovery of non-ferrous metals from solutions and purification of industrial waste waters is carried out on the base of using new synthetic and natural sorbents (from local raw materials) which are able to bind ions in both cationic and anionic forms depending on type of ligands and external conditions. Optimum parameters of copper sorption were determined. The developed wasteless technologies of copper extraction from sulphide ores with usage of new non-toxic solvents and accessible sorbents with full recycling of water are tested in pilot scale heap leaching, and are recommended as the ecological, economical and practical alternative to traditional methods.

A comparison of the amount of minus-28-mesh product produced by a standard grinding test procedure is provided for 45 non-metallic materials. The percentage of product, the weight of product per unit of energy used and the weight of product per mill revolution are shown. The results exhibited excellent reproducibility and demonstrated an accurate comparison of grindability for non-metallic materials.

"The desirable shovel speed-torque curves are described, along with the characteristics of the more important electrical components used to approximate these curves. A particular shovel regulator system combining these components is discussed in detail and some of the advantages and disadvantages of the system are given.INTRODUCTIONIN 1959, STATIC CONTROL was for the first time successfully applied, installed and operated on a mining machine in North America. Since that time, a great deal has been learned about this control by the people maintaining these machines as well as by the de-signers.In 1961, the first SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) or thyristor control system was installed on an excavator. This control differed from the earlier static control in that thyristor excitors supplied the generator fields directly. The development of thyristors of a sufficient rating to supply amounts of phase-controlled power to the generator fields eliminated the bulky Mag. Amp. -Rectifier combination previously used."

He is, however, constantly striving to squeeze more and more efficiency from each mode of transport. Man&apos;s first method of transporting himself and his goods was, obviously, himself; then he acquired his first beast of burden - woman. Most other two-legged female animals carried their young around clinging to their fur. Human mothers were, generally speaking, furless and their offspring less &apos;Prehensile, and so slings and other trappings were invented to carry young children. Man&apos;s inventive genius soon adopted these devices for carrying other burdens, and for countless centuries woman carried all in order that man could walk unencumbered except by his weapons. Later other ?beasts of burden were trained and used, including dogs, horses, oxen, camels, etc. Man also discovered quite early that he could drag along the ground more than he could carry on his back.

"Aerial surveys of the open pits have been conducted regularly at Lake Asbestos of Quebec, Ltd. -a subsidiary of American Smelting and Re-fining Company -since 1958. Ground controls are supplied by Lake Asbestos, and a topographic map of the pits at a scale of 1 in. to 50 ft., with 2-foot contour intervals, is obtained by aerial photography. The information from the topographic map is then transferred by the Lake Asbestos engineering staff to sections from which the volumes removed are calculated. Considering the size and complexity of the operation, this system has proved to be the cheapest, fastest and most accurate way of determining the quantities of rock and overburden removed. More than 11,000,000 tons of ore and waste are mined each year in three different pits. Further-more, the nature, shape and extent of the orebodies make it necessary to mine on many (up to eight) benches of a pit during a single year. In addition, there are sections of the pits where it is impossible or un-safe to survey the crest of some benches by standard ground methods. For these reasons, the tonnages obtained by truck count are checked and adjusted by aerial survey. These surveys are now taking place every six months. With this system, it is possible for a two-man surveying crew to look after all field work in the mine area."
