"To improve the economic and environmental performance of underground mining operations, it is common practice to return the metallurgical waste material underground as backfill. This is called hydraulic backfill and is used to fill the mined-out areas not exposed to further mining. To provide mechanical support for underground mining a cemented backfill is normally used. Since its introduction, cemented backfill has allowed mining companies to increase their ore extraction and improve working and environmental conditions. However, cemented backfill represents up to 50% to 85% of the mine’s operating cost compared with 5% to 10% for hydraulic backfill.These economic pressures have led mining companies to carry out research into the partial or total replacement of cement using a variety of alternative materials. The materials are generally site-specific materials, readily available, and cost-effective relative to cement. Such investigations have led to reduced cost of many backfill mixes while maintaining, and in some cases improving, the physical properties of cemented backfill. However, in most cases, cement still remains an integral part of any binder combination. This can be attributed to the alternative binders investigated being either non-binding materials or capable of generating only low-strength backfills, except when used in conjunction with cement.This paper provides a historical review of backfilling binder materials and their characteristics. In particular, it reviews the many alternative materials that have been proposed to either partially or fully replace Portland cement as the main binder."

"Hydraulic transport of solids has long been an important technique in mining and beneficiation. More recently, slurry pipelines have proved to be economic for longdistance overland transport of many commoditieis, including iron ore concentrates and coal. Now, the Marconaflo system brings the many advantages of hydraulic transport to bulk storage, loading, transportation and unloading of ships and other carrying equipment, thus providing important new means for delivering mineral commodities to market. In this paper, the authors describe the Marconaflo system and the potential economies which can be realized when applying it for loading, transporting, storing, reclaiming and blending a variety of mineral commodities, using several commercial installations as examples."

"A novel methodology was developed to obtain a 3D porous layer with a high aspect ratio of porosity on a titanium electrode. The porous structure allowed more active material such as hydrous ruthenium oxide to be accommodated during the fabrication of the supercapacitor, resulting in an exceptionally high capacitance per surface area. The electrode demonstrated a remarkably high capacitance of 4,800 mF/cm2. The porous layer was composed of functionalized nanoparticles of TiO2 organized in a perfect 3D hexagonal close-packed array that resulted in a highly porous 3D structure. The layer was used as a template to electrolessly deposit a thin layer of silver prior to the electrodeposition of active material. The manufacturing of compact energy storage elements needs to be compatible with the electronic circuit microfabrication processes. Recently, interest in integrating miniaturized supercapacitors into electronic circuits has increased due to their high charge–discharge rate and long operating life; however, ultra-high power miniaturized supercapacitors suffer from low energy density, hence requiring significant enhancement in their energy density for various applications (Deng et al., 2011; Beidaghi & Wang, 2012; Chen et al., 2014)."

"In January of 1964, a group known as the Canadian Gold Metallurgists was formed with the backing of the managers of most Canadian gold mining operations. This organization is composed of about thirty mill superintendents of Canadian gold milling operations where the cyanidation process is in use, and one member from the staff of the Mines Branch, Department of Energy, Mines and Re-sources, Ottawa. The aim of this group is to bring together gold mill operators, and research and development people from both industry and government for the purpose of discus-sing common metallurgical problems, and deciding on what operational R and D efforts can be made to help solve these problems. Since the conception of this organization, this approach taken by the gold industry to the study of metallurgical problems has resulted in benefits to all operators, both by assisting them with problems peculiar to their own individual operations and by providing developments of general interest to the industry.This paper describes events leading up to the formation of the Canadian Gold Metallurgists, and how the group has operated since its formation. Examples of progress made toward the group's objectives are given, and possible future programs are discussed."

The selected mining method for the Rodeo lower Zone is slot and slash. Initial design indicated that the stope height should be limited to a maximum of 18 m, thus six levels were needed to extract the ore. Higher stope height in the Rodeo Lower Zone means less development thus less capital required to extract the available reserves. It was proposed to eliminate one level by establishing 30 m and 24 m level intervals. To ensure that no stability problems will be encountered by eliminating one level, a Matthew analysis, based on diamond drill core information, was performed for the Lower Rodeo Ore Body. In addition, comparisons between the rock mass quality of Meikle Main Zone below 1825 L and Meikle East Zone between 1600 L and 1750 L with the rock mass quality of the Lower Rodeo were made

The Doyon Mine?s Zone 1 (Altered Zone), found along the southern boundary of the mine, encompasses approximately 20% of the mining reserves. The mineralisation is found in a series of steeply dipping narrow veinlets, which are contained in an extremely weak host rock: a sericitic schist with RQD values ranging from 0 to 20. Longhole mining methods are used, with either longitudinal or transverse approaches, depending on the width of the ore zone. Dilution is of critical importance in the mining of this zone, particularly in longitudinal stopes, where dilution levels have averaged 55% since 2000. Major factors influencing dilution in this zone include the stope geometry and standup time. A two-phase approach has been developed to mine and backfill longitudinal stopes: the top of the stope is pastefilled after approximately half of the broken ore has been extracted; the remainder of the ore is extracted once the plug has cured; and the remaining void is filled. This method has been used in six stopes to date, resulting in an average dilution of 17%. This paper details the application of this technique and its effect on dilution.

As a consequence, technology providers tend to focus on automating repetition and complexity, resulting in software that improves individual productivity while failing to address the interdependency of mining functions. For this reason, technology vendors like Gemcom are following partnership approaches with their clients, engaging corporate and operational stakeholders to better understand mining business objectives. This presentation examines some of the approaches that help foster the development of solutions that leverage the information produced during mine operations to improve downstream process control and tactical decision support.

"The Montcalm concentrator operation was successfully commissioned in fall of 2004 at the Xstrata Copper’s Kidd Creek Metallurgical Site, Timmins. The start-up met or exceeded the Type 1 profile as defined by McNulty. Since the life-of-mine was estimated at seven years, concentrator optimisation endeavours had to be fast-tracked. These joint endeavours between the Kidd Creek Metallurgical Site staff and Xstrata Process Support were focussed on increasing ore treatment capacity and metallurgical performance. This paper reviews these endeavours. A flotation circuit survey, together with appropriate Process Mineralogy measurements, identified recovery opportunities in both locked and overground pentlandite in final tailings. The bypassing of first rougher concentrate directly to final concentrate was also recommended, given the composition of that stream. A subsequent grinding circuit survey identified a low circulating load due to poor classification performance. Modelling of these data suggested a change to the cyclone nest and pumping arrangements in the grinding circuit. Implementation of these recommendations has led to a 25% gain in milling circuit capacity as well as improved flotation circuit performance. These improvements amount to nickel and copper recovery gains of 2.57 and 1.83% respectively.INTRODUCTIONHistoryThe Montcalm Ni/Cu Ore is processed in a spare division of the Xstrata Copper’s Kidd Creek concentrator, located near Timmins in Northern Ontario. The flowsheet had been specified by earlier work, and the project fast-tracked so as to commission production operations into a time of rising nickel and copper prices. The Montcalm flow sheet starts with on-site ore crushing to - 19 mm. The crushed ore is trucked to the concentrator. This off-site crushing minimizes contamination with the Kidd Creek Cu/Zn ore. In the concentrator, rod and ball mill grinding to a target p80 of 39 µm produces the Rougher Flotation Feed. Flotation to Bulk Concentrate follows as Cu/Ni roughing and two stages of cleaning. Bulk concentrate is subjected to Cu/Ni separation using conventional column cells. Xanthate is the collector and MIBC is used as frother. Depramin C, a CMC (Carboxy Methyl Cellulose) is added to depress ferromagnesian silicates in the flotation process."

"Dorbyl Heavy Engineering has been manufacturing winders since 1949 mostly for the South African mining industry.Table 1 shows that the vast majority of winders have been double drum winders. At the greater depths with larger ropes being employed, it became apparent that multi-rope winders would be needed. The high stress variation in Koepe winder ropes at great depths especially beyond 2000 m, ruled out this possibility. Thus the original concept was borne for the Blair multi-rope winder where the stress level variations in the rope would be as per the well known, tried and tested double drum winder. The Blair multi-rope was also devised to increase payload by using multiple ropes.With the increasing costs of transporting men and material coupled with fact that orebodies are getting deeper, various feasibility studies have been carried out by South African mining houses. For this reason Dorbyl Heavy Engineering has done conceptual design work of both double drum and Blair multi-rope winders with diameters up to 8.5 m dia (still well within our manufacturing capabilities). These feasibility studies have looked at depths approaching 4000 m*.This paper covers the typical duties leading to the choice of single drum, double drum, Koepe and Blair multi-rope hoists on South African gold mines. A brief synopsis of Dorbyl hoists in use in the South African mining industry, with some indications of future trends, will be discussed.With current installed depths of wind approaching 2500 m, the Blair multi-rope hoist has been used extensively for the heavier payloads.Some of the main considerations pertinent to the design of the Blair multi-rope hoist are illustrated together with the implications of using this type of hoist to winding depths of3000 m to 4000 m in the foreseeable future."

"Aluminium rolling processing from ingots to cold rolled coils comes with a lot of challenges especially in controlling defective products in casting, hot mill and cold mill operations. Hence this study focused on reducing defects at mills and cast-house using six sigma approaches. The use of six sigma approach will help the production experts to determine the gap between its operation and world class process. Practical data from First Aluminium Rolling mills were presented and analysed and mini improvement projects were proposed based on organisation need to achieve excellence. This study encourages aluminium alloy industries to pursue process improvement projects on the basis of analysis on data obtained from their shop floor, hence ensuring that through this, recovery is improved and cost of poor quality is reduced.INTRODUCTION Engineer Bill Smith while working at Motorola in 1986 introduced a new concept in which a set of techniques and tools are used for process improvement by controlling variations (defects). These tools and techniques are explained by an acronym DMAIC. The technology of percussion drilling is well mastered. The lower cost of percussion drilling allows more holes to be drilled for the same budget. However significant differences are often observed between percussion and diamond drill assay data. This is due to the increased level of contamination associated with the percussion drilling process. Statistical studies on twinned drillholes show that diamond and percussion assays cannot simply be merged in a traditional kriging approach. The question then arises on how to use both types of data to produce reliable resource estimates. To take into account the lower reliability of the percussion assays, a noise characterized by a variance is added to these data. The methodology consists of two steps: 1. Cokriging of the equivalent diamond value at the percussion assay locations. 2. Block kriging using diamond assays and equivalent diamond values, calculated previously, adding to these data a noise, whose variance is the cokriging variance of step 1. This particular way of achieving kriging is called kriging with variance of measurement error. The paper illustrates this innovative methodology with an application on an iron deposit. The results of this method is compared to block kriging using only diamond assays and the gain in precision is quantified. An extension of that approach to multi-element cokriging is also presented.

"As we move into 1983, Canada is not only in a deep recession, there are major changes taking place.International competition is growing fiercer.Major core industries such as automobile, steel, mining, oil, agriculture, forestry, fishing, major manufacturing and others are just not expanding.If and when recovery comes starting in mid-1983, as many predict, don't expect industries to suddenly resume former growth patterns. It's just not possible.Companies, by necessity, are becoming lean and mean, and they are still in the process of reducing staff to meet changing times and conditions. Many of the staff now being released may never return to fulltime work with a single employer, particularly if they cannot measure up to more exacting performance standards and management expectations.There are clear cut instances of people who lose a job for reasons beyond their control. A merger, the loss of function, or a major reorganization sometimes creates casualties of people who were excellent performers. Such people can survive well, based on the tongue of good report and with some help from associates or others. However, even good performers often have difficulty in adjusting to the rigors of finding a new job and to become their own personal salesman."

"High demand for metals is driving the exploitation of lower grade and more complex orebodies. These projects are often the initiatives of junior mining companies with limited financial resources. In addition, existing operations seek to enhance revenue from their existing metal recovery operations, through the production of value-added by-product metals and chemicals. Typically, hydrometallurgical circuits, often with novel chemistry, are required to exploit these new ores, to produce the multiplicity of products that will make a marginal project economical, or to increase the product range of an existing operation. Often, the mineral processing engineer is given the task of coordinating the development of a back-end hydrometallurgical flowsheet for their mineral processing project. This paper discusses the objectives that companies have when they commission the operation of a hydrometallurgical pilot plant. The paper goes on to enumerate some of the principal differences between mineral processing and hydrometallurgical pilot plants and the effect these have on the design, operability and potential pilot plant outcomes. Important factors include working with chemically reactive solutions and pulps, elevated temperatures operation, changing rheological properties of slurries, the complexity of integrated circuit flowsheets with long hold-up times and multiple recycle streams, and the need in some cases for extreme attention to purity and cleanliness. Examples will be drawn from the extensive experience base of SGS Minerals Services at the Lakefield site, in piloting both mineral processing and hydrometallurgical process flowsheets.INTRODUCTIONWe are currently experiencing a period of strong growth in the demand for metals. This in turn is turning the spotlight on a great many smaller mining companies and mining promotion ventures trying to tap into the rising metal demand. Some of these companies want to develop their properties and recover metals while others want to develop to the point that a major company will take an interest, or in some cases buy them out completely.With the heightened interest in metals, many orebodies that have been known about for years are being reconsidered for exploitation. Often, the reason they have not been developed to date is because of difficult metallurgy and marginal grades leading to marginal economic viability. In both cases the key that unlocks the resources is often the application of a novel metallurgical flowsheet, often a hydrometallurgical flowsheet."

These changes are required in order to meet today?s challenging business environment. Mining professionals are focusing on the development of safe and achievable mine plans to maximize mining value while reducing the potential of project delays and production shortfalls. This paper explores how new design tools, techniques and system designs in mine planning are being developed to optimize the value of every ton of ore mined and processed. To differentiate from other papers on long-term planning, this paper focuses on the concept of business planning at the mines. Business planning is the understanding and optimization of the relationship between mine plans and the value it adds in the overall process. The management and key stakeholders of Vale Inco have recognized that the development of a robust mine planning system and programs are essential for the long-term sustainability of the operations.

"In early 2000, CANMET-MMSL was engaged by the Ontario Ministry of Labour (OMOL) to conduct an international study of the practices, in several key mining jurisdictions, of determining the criteria that are used to decide when the wire ropes used in mine hoisting are to be retired from service. Subsequently, the author visited key officials and institutions in Canada, the United States, the Republic of South Africa, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Poland. Material from the Australian province of New South Wales and Hungary was also included.The report that resulted included, among other sections: (1) the history of wire ropes and trends in manufacturing technology; (2) a review of mine hoisting practices; (3) the requirements regarding safety factors; (4) a review of the various operations and their potential future development; (5) the criteria for rope replacement; (6) potential future developments that could take place in both hoisting and rope inspection practices in Canada; and (7) recommendations.Subsequently, the report was issued by OMOL, and as a CD-ROM by CANMETMMSL. In this paper the author presents the key findings and the recommendations made in the study."

"The use of hydraulically delivered classified tailings sands to provide ground support in large mining operations is still widespread despite recent developments of alternate backfilling methods and materials. The major disadvantages of the use of hydraulic fill are the costs and risks associated with slurry delivery. The main risk is that of bulkhead failure resulting from sand liquefaction due to insufficient operational control or due to dynamic loading from earthquake or rockburst. That risk may be eliminated by the pouring of a stiff cemented sand plug in the base of each stope prior to continuous fill pouring in that stope. An additional advantage of cemented plugs is that massive bulkheads are not needed. Instead, a temporary (removable and reusable) bulkhead can be used for plug forming.Physical model studies of fill pressures on a temporary bulkhead were carried out in a 3 m radius centrifuge facility. Fill pouring in-flight was carried out in order to model prototype stress paths. The results indicate that the average bulkhead pressure is likely to be less than 10 kPa under normal operating conditions and less than 20 kPa under the poorest anticipated operating conditions which include smooth walls, high slimes content and high water-content slurries. A portable bulkhead consisting of a central core and a surrounding sealing bladder was modelled and found to be effective. The use of different sizes of cores allowed the stress distribution adjacent to these bulkheads to be evaluated."

"Autoclaves have been in commercial use in the mining industry since the early 1950's the initial applications included tin, uranium, cobalt, nickel and copper extraction under both acidic and alkaline conditions. These circuits varied in batch or continuous operation. The geometry has been spherical, vertical, and horizontal type with up to six agitators, with throughput as high as 1000 stpd.Presently autoclaves are a good process selection for many refractory sulphide gold bearing ores. The first application of pressure oxidation in the gold industry was at the Homestake Mcglaughlin's Mine which was commissioned in 1985. This was an acidic pressure oxidation process treating 3000 stpd in three four compartment horizontal autoclaves 14' diameter and 53' long. Since the initiation of autoclaves for the treatment of gold bearing sulphides, there are presently 16 gold autoclaves operating worldwide varying in size up to 18'4"" inside diameter. There are seven autoclaves for the treatment of refractory sulphide gold bearing ores to be commissioned in 1997 and 1998.Autoclave technology has progressed extensively since the mid-eighties. Operational experience has made rapid progress and the result is much smoother and safer autoclave operation. There have been many advances in autoclave technology design. For example, the use of exotic materials for corrosion resistance to reduce down time for maintenance. The instrumentation involved in autoclave operation is very sophisticated which allows for many safety features. The advanced design has allowed for greater availability and as a result operating costs and maintenance costs have decreased. These technological advancements have made autoclave technology more safe and this has resulted in a greater acceptance of this type of operation. Many of the gold autoclave facilities operate up to 9 months continuously without shutdowns. The advancement of autoclave technology has inspired many new applications.Because of the outstanding operation of autoclaves in the gold industry, many other applications for autoclave technology are being considered. I HAVE considerable hesitation in preparing and presenting this paper. These machines have been such an intimate part of my own experiences and predilections for such a long time that J would find it difficult to tell the story in an impersonal way. They have had several attractions for me. They were needed for the study of the fundamental features of modern milling, size analysis and accurate batch concentration of the very fine particles. I had been a millman once, a real operating millman, and, when I became academic". I always had the craving to link the academic laboratory with the field, as Rittinger and Richards had done. My first milling experience was with a small concentrator at a tin mine in Bohemia, forty-seven years ago. There was no assay office and the testing of our tailings was by means of a "Vanning Shovel", introduced from Cornwall by Captain Josiah Thomas, the great Josiah of Dolcoath, some fifteen years previously. This was a most effective instrument and it has always been a puzzle to me that it has not been more universally used by millmen. Later, at Freiberg, on the other side of the Erz Gebirge from the tin mine, I was introduced to the "Sichertrog", made out of wood shaped something like a very shallow boat or an elongated saucer, a most effective piece of apparatus when. the difficult technique of handling it was once achieved. Later, in the Slocan in British Columbia, my partner, the late Maurice Bucke, used a short length of flat trough or launder suspended by four wires, with which he got very satisfactory results as a small batch concentrator. In the University laboratory we had frequent need for something of this kind, and many efforts were made to solve the problem. With W. E. Johnston, we were working on the problem of gold-bearing telluride ores, which called insistently for a separation of the very fine telluride particles which existed only in minute quantities in the Kirkland Lake ores. Under this spur there finally developed the Superpanner, which is a mechanized combination of the Vanning Shovel, the Sichertrog, and the Maurice Bucke suspended launder.
