"A major thrust in industrial automation over the past few years has been the exploration and incorporation of higher level (supervisory and optimizing) control strategies aimed at more fully exploiting the existing control system infrastructure. There is little doubt that this is worthwhile pursuit, however, one must not lose sight of the maintenance and development requirements of the basic control system. Statistics on loop performance indicate that this too is an area of considerable potential. In this paper the authors look at some of the less elegant, but arguably equally important issues in mineral processing plant control. The focus is on controller structures, loop tuning, sampling, filtering, and some of the other principal components of the regulatory control foundations. In many cases significant improvements in control performance can be achieved by getting back to the basics.IntroductionEvery modem concentrator has a state-of-the-art computer control system in place. Several of these are contemplating installing, or have installed, advanced control systems, such as expert systems, but the foundation of their control system remains the PI controller. Although the authors are not aware of any survey or published information for the mineral processing industry, it is reasonable to assume that it would be similar to the pulp and paper industry. ""The average [pulp] mill has some 2000 control loops of which 97% use PI control. This means that PID, dead time compensation, adaptive controllers, specialized algorithms, ... , constitute only 3% of the installed base."" (Bialkowski [1992]).Bialkowski [1992] also stated that ""If you have been keeping score, only 20% of the loops surveyed actually decrease variability in automatic over manual mode of operation, in the short term."" He attributed the problems to: poor tuning (30% of all loops), control valve problems (30% of all loops) and process problems (20% of all loops). There appear to be a serious need to go back to basics and review the existing control system."

"Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V. – Mining Division, has initiated in the last ten years, six Mining Operations (Bismark, Tizapa, Ciénega, La Herradura, Rey de Plata, and Francisco I. "Potash processing has much in common in terms of unit operations and plant operating strategy with other mineral processing plants. As it is a rather large topic the processes will be broad brushed to give you some background and then I will go into a little detail on the things we do in the Cominco plant that may be of interest to the group as a whole. In particular the centrallized computer control system and associated instrumentation and the operator training programs will be covered as well as the mill fire, something that could happen in any plant. THE ORE AND PRODUCTSThere are differences in potash ores as you would expect. It is my intention to deal with the ores processed in the Saskatoon area. These are mined from the beds in the Patience Lake Member and have a mineralogical description as follows:Sylvite (Potassium Chloride) 40%Halite (Sodium Chloride) 55%Insolubles (Slimes) 5%A number of products are made from this ore. It is characteristic of a potash plant that you put as much effort into grading and converting the sylvite to meet market requirements as you do in recovering it."

The Freeport McMoRan El Paso Refinery uses co-generation to produce some of its electricity and all of its steam. This paper will cover the operation of the co-generation plant natural gas turbine at a fixed RPM for blade longevity and energy output. The by-product heat from the turbine passes through boilers with additional heat from a duct burner to produce steam for the Tank House and auxiliary operations. The steam demand varies dramatically throughout the day based on unloading activities in the Tank House. The use of an automated steam control system within the El Paso Refinery will help stabilize line pressure by incrementally controlling steam consumption based on electrolyte temperature. This will minimize steam line pressure fluctuations. INTRODUCTION In the mid 1920’s the Nichols Copper Company of Laurel Hill, New York recognized the need for a modern copper refining facility in the southwest. Due to the many railroad heads, affordable power and abundant labor supply, and the close proximity to regional copper smelters in Mexico, Arizona, and New Mexico, El Paso became the logical location. In December 1928, ground was broken for the joint venture refinery between the Nichols Copper Company, Phelps Dodge, and the Calumet and Arizona Mining Company. In September 1930, Nichols Copper Company became a part of Phelps Dodge Corporation after a stock exchange. In July 1938, Nichols Division officially became Phelps Dodge Refining Corporation. In March 2007, Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold acquired Phelps Dodge. Energy costs (electrical and thermal) are critically important in the viability of modern copper electrorefineries. The El Paso Refinery produces electricity and steam through its cogeneration system. The El Paso cogeneration facility is a natural gas, 15-megawatt facility containing five turbine generators and associated waste heat recovery boilers. The facility is divided into two phases. Phase I consists of two Allison 2.2-megawatt turbine generators. Phase II consists of three Solar Taurus 3.5-megawatt turbine generators. Presently three units in Phase II are operated. The Phase I units were purchased and installed in 1986 and the Phase II units in 1992 (Solar 1991). The facility operated at full capacity until 2003 when steam demand was significantly reduced due to decrease in cathode production and closure of the copper sulfate and precious metal operations. Phase I units were taken out of service and put on care and maintenance status.

"The Iron Ore Company Of Canada's Carol Project is located in Labrador City, Newfoundland. Labrador City is some 912 air kilometers northeast of Montreal, and 417 ratl kilometers north of Sept-Iles, Quebec.Over 2,800 employees work at the Carol Project to produce some 20.0 million tonnes of concentrate and 10.5 million tonnes of pellets annually.In 1979 our Training Department started to develop the DACUM System of training for our Concentrator Operations Department.DACUM is an individualized, self-learning, training program. It is both a curriculum plan and an evaluation instrument.To date, the DACUM System has been completed for all occupations in the concentrator and work will commence shortly to develop DACUM for our Pellet Plant and Mine Operations Departments."

This has led to the integration of corporate social responsibility (CSR) philosophy in corporate governance, policy, and programming. The paper will identify the basis of CSR practise in Canada?s mining industry and provide a Canadian example of CSR implementation. Biography Dara Hrytzak-Lieffers is the manager, corporate social responsibility at Cameco Corporation. She oversees corporate CSR initiatives including the Sustainable Development report and public engagement programs. Dara received her BA in International Studies from the University of Saskatchewan and an MA in International Conflict Analysis from the Brussels School of International Studies. She is a recent graduate of the World Nuclear University summer institute.

"In the flotation of fine particles, there are two difficulties in general: low recovery of valuable minerals and high recovery of gangue minerals. The low recovery of fine valuable minerals is attributed to low bubble-particle collision and attachment efficiencies, while high recovery of fine gangue minerals is attributed to mechanical entrainment through water films between gas bubbles. Over the last five years COREM has been actively developing fine particle flotation techniques with the objective of improving fine particle flotation separation efficiencies.The fine particle flotation techniques with both generation of micro bubbles and enlargement of sizes of fine particles have been developed to increase bubble-particle collision efficiency. For oxidized fine sulphide minerals, both physical and chemical techniques have been developed to modify the hydrophilic surfaces and therefore increase bubble-particle attachment efficiency. To reduce mechanical entrainment of fine gangue minerals, a new approach, polymeric depression and flocculation, has been developed. By selecting the high molecular weight polymeric depressants to make fine gangue minerals hydrophilic and also enlarge their sizes, entrainment can be minimized. By combining these techniques, we are able to improve both flotation recovery and selectivity in some fine ore flotation systems.INTRODUCTIONWith depleting mineral resources and their declining grades, ores leaving grinding circuit for froth flotation are becoming increasingly finer to achieve mineral liberation. Together with the increasing demand for minerals, ever-increasing tonnages of fines are being produced. Therefore, flotation of fine particles is an immense challenge to be tackled by researchers all over the world today."

Simulation tools are preferred for evaluating complex systems due to its ability to mimic reality and quickly evaluate many different what-if scenarios and find global solutions. A simulation model is capable of representing variable and dynamic disturbances that are typically encountered in day-to-day operations; this is where spreadsheet models or linear programs fall short because they cannot account for the dynamic behavior and relationships. The simulation model used for this work was developed by Xstrata-Nickel (previously Falconbridge). The simulation tool is very flexible and can be used to simulate different mining and development methods. The scope of the modeling included production mining, geology, equipment fleets, equipment maintenance and random failures, manpower, shift schedules, and cycle activity times. A case overview of the 170 Orebody will be presented along with the challenges associated with data collection for the model inputs. Results and lessons learned will also be discussed.

Two comprehensive surveys, which focus upon backfill practices and the economics of backfilling in underground mines in Canada, have been conducted. The two surveys were designed to assess operational practices and costs associated with the wide scope of filling operations that must be met by individual mines, ranging from raw material feed to the preparation plant, through underground backfill transportation, to in-stope product placement. This paper presents the current state of backfill usage in Canada, identifies trends in minefill practices and provides mine operators with an updated database of information upon which they might compare their own practices and costs with present trends throughout the industry.

"A laboratory study was carried out to determine the potential role and effect of ultrasonic irradiation in the flotation of a Sudbury copper-nickel sulphide ore. The use of ultrasound was tested separately at the pulp preconditioning, collector conditioning and flotation stages. While no significant benefits were evident in the latter two cases, ultrasonic preconditioning of pulp improved the grade-recovery performance and had the prospect of reducing reagent consumption rates. Tests were conducted on both the normal and oxidized ore samples, and several variables were investigated, including ultrasound frequency (25 kHz and 45 kHz), ultrasonic power (up to 1.6 W/cm2), duration of ultrasonic treatment (up to 60 minutes), and the intensity of pulp agitation employed during the application of ultrasound. Ultrasound frequency of 25 kHz and duration of 15 minutes yielded satisfactory results. Changes were found to occur in the temperature, pH and Eh of the pulp during ultrasonic processing. The favorable effects of ultrasound observed in this study were attributed primarily to its surface cleaning capability.INTRODUCTIONThe use of ultrasound for the surface cleaning of objects is well known. Ore flotation is based essentially on the surface properties of minerals, and hence stands to benefit from ultrasonic treatment which may help restore mineral surface characteristics that might have been lost or modified through oxidation, etc. Expected outcomes of this method of treatment include improved flotation kinetics, higher recovery, better selectivity, and savings in reagent consumption, as has been demonstrated by various researchers (Aldrich and Feng 1999, Celik 1989, Ozkan 2002, Letmathe et al. 2002, Nicol et al. 1986)."

"The Porgera orebody is located in mountainous terrain in Enga Province, Papua New Guinea. An underground mine has been developed which produces up to 2000 t/d of ore grading over 2 ozs Au/t. Some 79% of the gold in the ore is free, with the balance in a highly refractory form as sub-microscopic gold evenly disseminated within a pyrite matrix.This paper describes the metallurgical plant that uses flotation and cyanidation circuits to effectively recover the free gold in the ore feed, allowing for wide variation in the gold head grade. The refractory gold component in the ore is stored as leached pyrite flotation concentrate and this concentrate will be later treated by autoclaving techniques to recover the contained gold.The ProiectThe property is located in the Porgera Valley 600 Km North West of Port Moresby. The remote location is 2500 m above sea level. The mine area has 3600 mm of annual rainfall and a temperate climate with temperatures ranging from 10° c to 22° c throughout the year.Alluvial gold was reported in the Porgera area in 1938 and has been an important source of revenue for the area for many years. Intermittent exploration was carried out until the 1960 1 s when Placer (PNG) Pty. Ltd. with Mt. Isa Mines commenced an extensive exploration program. The property was brought to production in 1990 by the Porgera Joint Venture group consisting of Mount Isa Mines Ltd, Rennison Goldfield Consolidated Ltd. and Placer Dome Inc, each with a 30% ownership and the Government of Papua New Guinea with a 10% share. Placer Dome Inc. is the manager of the property with construction under the direction of the Placer Dome Technical Services group."

"A study of the various components contributing to energy costs and their relationships to generally trended operating data, such as tonnage, operating costs, etc. over progressively shorter time periods provides information for an energy audit. A study of annual data gives some insight into the importance of various energy components. As the time frame of the study 11rogresses through monthly, daily and finally, into quarter hourly data, the variations become more evident and most important, strategies develop to minimize energy costs. The results of an audit conducted during the summer of 1978 at Wesfrob Mines are reported to illustrate this important phase, prerequisite to a meaningful energy cost avoidance program.The balance of the paper deals with the energy conservation program at Falconbridge Nickel Mines Sudbury Operations, the material and control equipment, the commitment, the new energy accounting practices and lastly, the policies. Examples of successful energy conservation endeavors include automatic peal electrical load control, waste heat recovery from mine air and compressor cooling water, energy reductions resulting from lower building temperatures and curtailmen: of idling loads. The use of pulse meters to measure the flow of gas, steam, compressed air and electrical energy, with their signals interfaced to process computers, allows monthly, daily and if necessary, immediate reporting of energy and energy per unit of production information. The program so reported at Falconbridge’s Sudbury Operations is credited with an annual cost avoidance of .9 million dollars in a 14.0 million dollar annual energy account."

THE Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company's underground mine at Flin Flon, Manitoba, has in the past been serviced by two working shafts-the North Main shaft, and the No. 3 shaft. The North Main shaft is used to hoist the total production from under-ground, and handles the greater part of the mine supplies and crews. The shaft is five-compartment design, rectangular in cross-section, and is equipped entirely with steel shaft sets from the surface to the finished depth of 2,210 feet. Hoisting equipment in the surface plant will not permit the North Main shaft to be extended below its present finished depth. The No. 3 shaft, located approximately 2,300 feet from the North Main shaft, is used primarily as a ventilation shaft, and for hoisting lower-level development waste to the 390 level, where this material is used as mine fill. The No. 3 shaft is of standard rectangular design, timbered with 8-in. by 8-in. creosoted fir sets, hung on 6-foot centres. From the surface to the 1,430 level, the No. 3 shaft consists of three 5 ft. by 5 ft. compartments, and below this level to the completed depth of 2,300 feet, the shaft is increased to four compartments. To service the mine and to expedite development below the 2,210 level, a one and one-half compartment winze was sunk from the 2,210 level to a depth of 766 feet, or approxima tel y the 3,000 level.

For lead, it is 1% free and 25 cents per unit above that. Lead is a much more harmful impurity than zinc because it tends to recycle more in the smelter circuit and creates a greater health hazard in the plant.E. Fluorides are present in exhaust gases in the aluminum and phosphate industries. Why would this be?G.G. McKerrow - 1 can't see why indium would be a serious impurity. It does tend to concentrate in flu dusts and if you get enough of it you can recover it and sell it but I have never heard of anyone putting a penalty on it.Question - I once ran into a small copper mine in Peru that had cadmium in the copper concentrate but no zinc. The copper smelter charged a penalty for the cadmium. Why would this be?"

"The Star Lake Mill was commissioned by Cameco (formerly Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation) in 1986 to process a small high grade gold deposit in a remote location of Northern Saskatchewan. The lean approach to the 200 t. p. d. CIP mill to minimize capital and operating costs employs a number of unique features which are described along with highlights from the initial two years of operation.1.0 INTRODUCTIONThe Star Lake Mine is located 520 kilometers north of the City of Saskatoon (Fig. l) with the nearest population centre in La Ronge 130 km to the south. Gold showings were first discovered in the area in the 1940's with the Star Lake ""21 Zone"" ore body discovered in 1983. The Star Lake Mine started operations in 1986 becoming the first primary gold producer in Saskatchewan in over 40 years. The mine is operated by Cameco (formerly SMOC) with 50\ ownership in a joint venture with starrex Mining Corporation (35\) and Uranerz Exploration and Mining (15%).The limited reserves coupled with the remote location and the price of gold ($300-$350 u.s./oz) at the time the project feasibility was being assessed required a lean approach to make the short term operation successful. This paper describes the approach taken in the design and construction of the Star Lake Mill and describes the mill operation with highlights of the initial two years of operation."

PART I.-GASES IN INDUSTRY INTRODUCTION THE part played by gases in industry can be considered from at least four distinct viewpoints, viz: (1) As air to support combustion and life and do various kinds of work (2) As fuel, or as essential to certain chemical processes (3) As sources of danger from explosion or fire ( 4) As hazards to man's health The present paper deals with gases only insofar as they are sources of danger, or are hazards to health. It may be noted, however, that, in point of tonnage, air is one of the most important materials handled in any industrial plant. In the operations of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, for example, 138,000 tons of air are handled daily, the only material exceeding this figure being water. The United States Bureau of Mines has listed no fewer than seventy-four gases and vapours that, under certain conditions, may be considered as ex-plosive or dangerous (poisonous). The Mildred Lake Settling Basin (MLSB) is the largest disposal site for mature fine tailings (MFT) at the Syncrude Canada Ltd. oil sands plant. Over the past years (since 1996), there has been a marked change in the densification behaviour of MFT in the MLSB. Methane-producing microorganisms, known as methanogens, have become very active, and large amounts of biogas (mainly methane) have been produced. Continued field monitoring of the MLSB has provided convincing evidence of the rapid densification process (rapid water drainage from the tailings) at the area with intense microbial activity. This rapid densification has caused pumping challenges in the transfer of fine tailings from the Mildred Lake Settling Basin for the creation of composite tailings. It may also have potential positive effects in accelerating the reclamation of the oil sands fine tailings. A field and laboratory research program was carried out to study the mechanism leading to the rapid densification phenomenon. A review and discussion of the research program is given and some results from the field investigations and small-scale column tests are presented in this paper.

"Access to the outside world is supplied by the Alaska Highway to continental Canada and the United States, the Haines Highway, and by the White Pass & Yukon Route to Skagway and Vancouver. Communities and mining developments located along the Alaska Highway are supplied daily by truck transport with commodities originating in Whitehorse, Edmonton, and Vancouver.The average payload on the Alaska and Mayo Highway is in the order of 16 to 25 tons and is subject to government regulations. Highway haulage distances to railhead at Whitehorse vary as does the direction. The Clinton Creek asbestos development is located 395 road miles north-west of Whitehorse whereas the United Keno Hill operation is 287 miles to the north. Cassiar Asbestos is located in Northern British Columbia at a distance of 357 miles south-east of railhead at Whitehorse. In order to service these various mines multipurpose highway vehicles have been designed to allow maximum backhaul of petroleum products. The White Pass & Yukon Route was established as an integrated transportation system from 1955 when it became apparent that three non-integrated systems (ship, rail and truck), with the various paper work and rising costs, could not continue to serve the needs of Yukon. Integration became the company policy and a system was developed. A special container ship (Clifford J. Rogers) was designed and built. This was the first specially built container ship in the world.
