INTRODUCTION FOR THE purpose of this paper, western bituminous coal is defined as steam coal produced in Alberta and southeastern British Columbia for sale primarily to railways and industries. Before examining present and future markets of this industry, it is proper to review briefly financial and operating conditions within the industry. The report of the Royal Commission on Coal, 1946, supplies financial data from which some conclusions may be drawn. In 1944, the industry as defined above had share capital of $24,886,696. In the fifteen years 1930 to 1944, inclusive, the industry produced: 44,364,211 tons of coal. The profit on this tonnage amounted to $4,678,382.58, which represented 10.6 cents per ton of production. Miscellaneous earnings increased the amount available for dividends to shareholders to a total of $8,487,952.41, which is equal to, 19.1 cents per ton of production. Dividends actually paid in this fifteen-year period amounted to $12,332,040.64, which represented an annual average rate of 3.40 per cent on share capital. It is worthy of note that, in 1944, the net current position of the industry, including investments, was $8,753,874.51. The writer believes that the financial position of the industry with respect to capital, current financial position, and net earnings, has not significantly changed from the fifteen-year period out-lined above. The figures quoted indicate the following situation: (1) The western bituminous coal industry is adequately financed. (2) The industry has followed a conservative dividend policy and has accrued funds for contingencies. (3) The industry has sold its production at very reasonable prices as evidenced by its moderate earnings per ton of production.

"IntroductionShot-saws are used for sawing rock throughout the dimension stone industry especially in granite quarry mills. Shot-saws, as currently designed, have an inherent wear problem which leads to slow cutting rates and repetitive blade changes which consumes much time. Because the saw blades are made from steel the abrasive shot used with them is limited to a certain hardness which effects the over-all efficiency of the sawing operation. Suggestions are made toward optimization of blade design and the sawing process. Blade DesignA common steel blade design is shown in Figure I. Note the perforations in the blade. These perforations or holes in the blade serve two or three purposes. The most obvious reason is to allow the abrasive shot a pocket in which to collect at the bottom of the blade, so that it can be distributed from these pockets into the cutting zone underneath the blade. The abrasive is fed to the saw in a slurry and usually comes in from the top. The blade must then cut a kerf wider than itself in order that the abrasive grains have a path leading from the top of the blade, down along its sides, and finally reaching the pockets and cutting zones. This circuitous path followed by the abrasive leads to side wear on the blades and high friction which can lead to blade buckling in severe cases. However, the fluidized path of the abrasives down the sides of the blade serves another purpose which is a positive gain if conditions are properly controlled. The abrasive slurry interacts with the perforations of the blade, the blade itself and the rock. This gap and the perforations in the blade, which are fluid filled, are sites of constant shearing motion. Eddy currents form in these gaps and pockets which tend to stabilize the blade by setting up balanced hydrodynamic forces which otherwise might not form in a non-perforated blade. A stable blade produces a more uniform cut in the rock. The third and final reason for the perforations are to allow the blade to wear in such a fashion that new pockets are always being formed and, consequently, new cutting surfaces between these pockets are also formed."

"The subject of Grinding Media is perhaps still quite controversial. Many people will state today that the spherical ball is the only way, and also will state that this was settled long ago others are not so sure, and I am in this second category. Over the years there have been many changes in grinding and in our evaluation of grinding media we should always be ready to review the overall situation at regular intervals. There is quite a lot of inertia in all branches of Hineral Dressing and this is particularly true of grinding or, more correctly, comminution.In order to understand some of the things which are done today, and to understand some of the thinking on grinding, it is desirable to go back some sixty years and trace the developments in comminution. In doing this we should consider perhaps three general categories with respect to daily tonnage. An arbitrary division would be under 500 T.P.D., 500-5000 T.P.D., and large operations which might have several parallel units, each with a capacity of about 5000 T.P.D. For the future, in the broad picture, this last category will be the important one because we will be more and more dependent on large-tonnage low-grade operations for most of the metals of the future. Some such division is necessary because the daily tonnage will have a very great effect on what we can and cannot do. It is also necessary to consider the entire flowsheet, and to remember in particular that grinding is not merely to make small particles but is also a conditioning process, to prepare the materi.al for the process which follows. The relationship of crushing to grinding must also be considered. It is logical to include the liners as part of the grinding media and we should try to distinguish between the wear of grinding media and the consumption of media by corrosion. Finally, the whole question of grinding media should be examined in relation to the possibilities of using some form of autogenous grinding."

The corrosion properties of the skin and the bulk of semi-solid processed and high pressure die cast AZ91 alloy were studied in 5% NaCI solution by (a) analysing the corrosion morphology, (b) measuring electrochemical polarization curves, (c) performing electrochemical impedance spectroscopic measurements, and (d) immersion tests at constant pH-values. Using XRD, LM, SEM and EDX to evaluate the microstructure of skin and bulk specimens, the corrosion results were related to the microstructures of the particular alloys. However, microstructure and corrosion performance were found to be similar for both production processes, and only slight but distinct differences were found. Generally, the skin corrosion properties are inferior to those of the bulk, with the exception of the high pressure die cast AZ91 alloy, where the finer microstructure of the skin layer exhibits a better performance as showed by impedance studies and confirmed in long term immersion tests.

Over 330 million accidents at work happen world wide every year, only counting those leading to more than four days absence. More than 350,000 end fatal. Two million people more die every year due to work-related diseases. To sum this up: around 2.4 million people die every year because of work conditions. Among many risky industries, mining stands out. While mining represents just 1% of employees globally, it unfortunately represents 8% of all occupational fatalities. Mining operations go along with a variety of hazards. Not only in large operations, as they first come to mind, but also in the manifold small scale mines, with an estimated 13 million labourers worldwide exposed to substances such as dust, mercury and other chemicals, while also dealing with poor ventilation, inadequate space and overexertion. But is the number of severe accidents and diseases inevitable or can we change this situation? We can make mining sustainably safer, but we need a successful strategy to do so. A high potential lies in Vision Zero. Vision Zero is a prevention strategy for a safe future without fatal or serious occupational diseases, work accidents and traffic accidents. First defined as early as in the 19th century by Eleuthère Irénée du Pont, its very successful elements were adopted by many European countries first aiming at road safety, then extended to safety and health at work. Vision Zero?s holistic elements cover technology, workplaces, rules, and people as fields of action. By focussing on severe and fatal accidents, its application increases the level of safety and health overall.

"Underground operation ventilation energy requirements constitute a significant portion of mine energy consumption (40–50%) and total energy costs (25–40%). In general, mine ventilation systems are energy inefficient; the author has found several systems that operate at efficiencies below 65%. This paper presents how engineering design principles can improve the performance and efficiency of ventilation appliances, resulting in reduced power consumption and operating costs. Case studies demonstrate that, by retrofitting ventilation appliances using proper engineering concepts, systems will operate at efficiencies well above common operating efficiencies, resulting in a drastic reduction in costs and base electrical and energy loads.RÉSUMÉ Les besoins énergétiques nécessaires à l’aérage d’une exploitation souterraine représentent une part considérable de la consommation d’énergie d’une mine (de 40 à 50 %) ainsi que des coûts totaux liés à l’énergie (de 25 à 40 %). De manière générale, les systèmes d’aérage d’une mine sont loin d’être écoénergétiques ; l’auteur a trouvé plusieurs systèmes fonctionnant à des rendements inférieurs à 65 %. Cet article présente les principes de conception technique qui peuvent améliorer la performance et l’efficacité des systèmes d’aérage, entraînant une réduction de la consommation d’électricité et des coûts d’exploitation. Des études de cas montrent qu’en les rénovant à l’aide de concepts techniques adéquats, les systèmes d’aérage fonctionneront à des rendements bien supérieurs aux rendements habituels d’une exploitation. "Rock failure process is generally recorded or measured using conventional sensors like strain gauges, seismic, micro-seismic, acoustic, electromagnetic and other techniques. The above sensors are either to be pasted on the surface of the rock sample or placed very near to it to capture the response of the sample with the increment of load. This requires precise tools to cut or polish the locations where sensors are to be placed. Moreover, deformation or acoustic or micro-seismic activities are recorded only at the locations where sensors are pasted.Recent development in Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique has shown promise to measure deformation / strain at every location of the surface of a sample. In DIC, two images (reference and deformed) are taken within a small time interval of the same object are compared to estimate the change in reflectance as a function of displacement, velocity or rate of strain at each pixel while the object is undergoing through a loading process. In this study, extended digital image correlation (X-DIC) technique has been implemented using 4-noded quadrilateral elements with a discontinuity surface in the deformed image. The continuous and enriched displacements are estimated at each node.The X-DIC method is verified using numerically generated images. The study has been further extended to evaluate the performance of X-DIC method on deformation analysis of experimental samples under uni-axial loading condition. The results of this study show that X-DIC method is an effective tool for determination of displacements of the entire surface of a rock sample having a discrete crack or discontinuity in a non-contact manner. This method demonstrates the applicability to investigate rock failure mechanism for the entire sample in a laboratory set up as well as monitoring of pillar failure mechanism in underground mines."

"INTRODUCTION On February 1, 1962, after five years of exploration and research, Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation announced that they would develop the Adams Mine. Plant construction began immediately and in December of 1964 the first shipment of pellets arrived at J & L's blast furnaces in Pittsburgh. J & L continued to operate the property through its wholly owned subsidiary, Jones & Laughlin Mining Company, Ltd., until August of 1971 when it was sold to Dominion Foundries and Steel, Limited of Hamilton. Dofasco engaged Cliffs of Canada, a subsidiary of Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company, to manage the operation of the property.SUMMARY:The Adams Mine is a one million tons per year iron ore pellet operation located in the Boston Township Iron Range, approximately seven miles southeast of Kirkland Lake, Ontario. The property includes 5,300 acres in which eight areas suitable for open pit mining have been outlined. It was estimated that the reserves in these out lined areas are sufficient to produce 30 million tons of high grade iron ore pellets.The ore 'consists of fine grained magnetite with alternating layers of chert and is mined by conventional open pit methods. This extremely hard and abrasive ore averages about 20 percent magnetic iron, and has a ratio of concentration of 3. 9 /1. Presently, mining operations are confined to two pits with a third one being developed for operations to begin in 1973.The run-of-mine ore is crushed and ground and then concentrated by magnetic separation and flotation to a concentrate grade of 68 percent magnetic iron. The concentrate is agglomerated by a grate-kiln pelletizing process and shipped by rail to Dofasco's blast furnaces in Hamilton and to Jones & Laughlin's furnaces in Pittsburgh."

FOR the past seven years, all flotation at the Britannia mill has been done in Forrester Air-Lift cells. Prior to 1931, the roughing and part of the cleaning operation had been performed in four 21-cell and two 14-cell M.S. machines. The resulting economies in reagent, power, maintenance, and general operating costs, and the increased recovery, more than justified the exclusive use of the Forrester machine. About three years ago, the possibility of still further improving the efficiency of the flotation section was the subject of considerable discussion and experiment. Arising from these experiments, tests were made of the practicability of using a cell of greater depth than that of any pneumatic or mechanically-agitated machine in common use. Cells were constructed with depths of 7 .5 feet, 10 feet, and 15 feet, and, in all cases, a very definite improvement in operation was indicated. The cell now being used in the mill treats from 5,500 to 6,200 tons of dry feed per day. It is 100 ft. long by 5 ft. wide by 8 ft. deep, and has replaced a total length of over 500 feet of standard Forrester machine. The choice of a depth of 8 feet was governed by the type of blower which was available-in this case, a Roots-Connersville blower, driven by a synchronous motor and delivering 6,000 c.f.m. of free air at 4.0 pounds per square inch. At the Chelan Division of the Howe Sound Company, where a new mill was recently built, all flotation is carried on in cells 10 feet deep, with good results.

"Traditional comminution tests are a vital component in every mine plant design. Comminution behavior governs both the cost of equipment and its operating efficiency. Most comminution tests are conducted off site on a limited number of samples, owing to the high costs and long lead times involved. Therefore a strong incentive exists to find alternative means for efficiently characterizing comminution behavior for a truly representative suite of samples. The potential for inferring comminution behavior from drill core is investigated in this paper. Our approach involves development of small scale comminution tests on the one hand, and measurement of a wide range of core attributes on the other. Our focus is the relationship between petrophysical properties and comminution behavior.Petrophysical properties of archival diamond drill core from the Ernest Henry Mine (Queensland, Australia) have been measured using a Geotek multi-sensor petrophysical core logger. We have investigated the relationship between the petrophysical properties and the corresponding small scale A*b and estimated Bond mill work index test results for 2m composites of the core. Core samples were petrophysically classified by means of cluster analysis. Comminution behaviour was then modeled for each cluster via multiple regression. The results suggest that prediction of the comminution behavior on the basis of petrophysics is viable at Ernest Henry.INTRODUCTIONMineral processing is the most important downstream operation for mining engineers and metallurgists since most mined materials are subjected to some type of comminution or beneficiation operation (SME, 1992). Comminution or size reduction is typically the first stage of processing. Size reduction steps (crushing and grinding) in any plant consume large amounts of energy, normally more than 50% of total energy (Weiss, 1985). Therefore, it is desirable to obtain laboratory results to design the size reduction equipment appropriately. One of the main factors that control the selection of hard-rock crushing equipment and the design of a crushing circuit is the mechanical character of the ore(s). Work index, density, abrasivity, compressive strength and clay content are essential parameters for ore characterisation (SME, 1992)."

In a radio frequency and optoelectoronic device packaging, Gold-Tin (Au-20 wt% Sn eutectic) solder is used widely due to the excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, high strength, and negligible creep characteristic under repetitive thermal cycling. With the recent lead-free movement, Gold-Tin solder is recognized as an alternative material for high temperature Lead-Tin solder. Generally, Gold-Tin solder is supplied in the forms such as ribbons, pellets, and ring frames. However, these forms must be set-up accurately on the joint area to press chips in bonding, therefore, it is difficult for these forms to satisfy the recent requirements for the down sizing in the connection areas. On the other hand, Au-20 wt% Sn solder paste can be applied flexibly to various supplying methods, such as printing, dispensing system and pin transcript. These methods also make it possible to reduce the production cost. However, in the case of using the solder paste, the void issue is one of the most undesirable problems. The void causes the degradation of the characteristics such as the bond strength, electrical characteristic and thermal conductivity. We have been intensifying the development of the void free paste, and have achieved void reduction by optimizing the powder size, the flux composition and the reflow condition.

Underground mine developments, such as haulage drifts and cross cuts, play a vital role in providing access to ore extraction areas for mine production. The stability of mine developments is thus of crucial importance during the life of a mine plan. Many Canadian mines use longhole mining methods or one of its variants. These methods require access to the orebody through mine developments such as haulage drifts and cross cuts on multiple levels. This paper examines the stability of mine development access intersections with respect to the planned mining sequence. A case study, the #1 Shear East orebody at Vale?s Garson Mine in Sudbury, Ontario, is presented. A three-dimensional, elastoplastic, finite difference model (FLAC 3D) was created for a development intersection situated 1.5 km below ground surface. The stability, or performance of the intersection, is evaluated in terms of the strength-to-stress ratio. The ratio threshold is set at 1.4 for temporary openings. Unsatisfactory performance is defined as a strength-to-stress ratio less than this threshold value. The performance of the intersection stability is evaluated at various modelled mining stages and the probabilistic method of analysis is then invoked to study the probability of unsatisfactory performance of the intersection. The results are presented and categorized with respect to probability, instability, and mining stage.

"AEROPHINE@ 3418A is a unique sulfide mineral promoter produced by Cyanamid, based on phosphine (PH3) chemistry. It has proven effective as a collector for the sulfide minerals of copper and particularly lead (galena), as well as for secondary gold and silver values. AEROPHINE 3418A has widest application as a Cu and/or Pb collector for complex ores of Cu-Zn and Pb-Zn, which frequently have significant quantities of associated precious metal values. Advantages shown in the use of AEROPHINE 3418A are improved selectivities against Zn- and Fe-sulfides, increased precious metals recoveries, reduced total collector consumptions for Cu and/or Pb flotation, and increased flotation kinetics leading to higher recoveries of these values. Operating plant, pilot plant and laboratory test data from treating different ores are presented, demonstrating the advantages in use and preferred application of AEROPHINE 3418A.INTRODUCTIONCyanamid operates the only phosphine and phosphine derivatives plant in North America, located in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Specialty chemicals manufactured at this facility are used in many diverse applications, including solvent extraction reagents and textile flame retardants. A unique phosphine-based sulfide mineral promoter, AEROPHINE 3418A, is also produced. The origins of AEROPHINE 3418A promoter date back to the 1960's, when it was established that sulfide mineral collectors based on phosphine chemistry demonstrated efficacy. This new collector chemistry was found to provide flotation performance differing significantly from those of more traditional thiol collector chemistries such as xanthates, dithiophosphates, mercaptobenzothiazoles, thionocarbamates and those with xanthogen groups. This paper deals with the prediction of locked cycle flotation results from data developed from individual batch tests. A postulate is made that the distribution of material in a separation stage is determined by the chemical conditions and the flotation time and that this distribution can be characterized by split factors which are constants for a fixed set of conditions. With this premise, it is demonstrated that a steady-state balance can be calculated for a circuit. Although the necessary equations can be solved algebraically, a computer program was written that uses an iterative technique to arrive at the steady-state balance. The program is written so that a variety of circuits can readily be simulated. A number of examples are examined to demonstrate the validity of this simulation procedure. The sensitivity of the material balance to changes in the split factors was examined. Data developed from different flowsheets are presented on sulphide ores, on copper-nickel separation and on silver flotation.

Following initial discovery in 1991, BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc opened Canada?s first diamond mine, the Ekati Diamond Mine TM (Ekati) in the Northwest Territories on October 14th, 1998. Four short years later on November 29th, 2002, saw the opening of North America?s first underground diamond mine - the Koala North mine. Nestled between the original Panda open pit and the new Koala pit which is in the early stages of production, Koala North represents the only underground kimberlite mining venture in arctic conditions outside the new underground mines being developed by ALROSA in the Yakutsk region of eastern Russia. Extensive underground kimberlite mining has been practiced in the Republic of South Africa for much of the 20th century and continues today. Underground mining represents a key component of the long term business plan for the Ekati. As various open pits reach their economic limit, continued recovery of high value ore at depth is dependent upon the ability to productively mine the kimberlite pipes by underground methods. As a function of its location, size, and value, the Koala North pipe is ideally positioned to host the first underground mine at Ekati . In addition to being a production source for the operation, Koala North is designed as a learning mine, from which to gain valuable experience in preparation for the potential mining of other larger, higher value pipes by underground methods in the future. Fortuitously Koala North was available for development so the learnings could be integrated into the Panda mine design prior to completion of the Panda pit. Establishing our first underground diamond mine, and applying the open benching mining method in arctic conditions brings a unique combination of mining challenges together in a harsh climate and remote environment. This paper examines the design and establishment of the Koala North mine. Discussion includes experiences gained from the first year of development, production start-up, and provides a brief overview of our potential underground future at Ekati .

Requirements to produce a higher bulk concentrate grade have necessitated extensive use of on-stream analyser data and computer programming to obtain the targets set for Frood Stobie Mill as required by overall milling considerations.A brief history of milling process changes associated with the changes from a low grade (3% Ni) bulk concentrate in the sixties to a high (6 to 8.5%). Nil bulk concentrate currently will be presented.The heart of the presentation will be the computer control schemes for ""self optimisation"" of the distinct flotation sections in the plant within certain restraints to achieve targets set by the mill metallurgist.

At the same time, it is the world?s largest or second largest producer and exporter of tin, lead, zinc, magnesium and a host of minor metals and industrial minerals, as well as a fast-growing exporter of coal.

This paper reviews the history, developments and 10 milestones of the oxygen steelmaking processes, with a special focus on conventional autothermic converters, high-speed converters with a blowing rate up to 5 m3n/t min and allothermic converters with coal addition, post combustion and the possibility to increase the scrap rate up to 50%. Related operating results are introduced. A new process route, which is based on hot metal and chromium ore, is outlined. The cost advantage for the production of 304 stainless steel grade is higher than 100 USS/t. The synthesis of EAF and oxygen converter steelmaking, a comparison of decarburization rates, refining combustion burners for optimized oxygen-management in EAF and an example for a large advanced EAF are outlined. Possibilities of flexible steelmaking and the growth and outlook of worldwide oxygen steelmaking are described.

Reference to the original use of the terms Laurentian and Huronian (and its extension), shows that the former was applied to granitized sedimentary and metamorphic pre-Cambrian rocks, and the gneissoid igneous rocks associated therewith, and the latter to non-fossiliferous rocks supposed to be later. But it appears from the work of Collins, Quirke and others that there is more or less of an overlap, and that of the original Laurentian the Grenville limestone, and some of the granites, may be later than the lowest part of the original Huronian. Before we can decide whether to abandon one or the other of the two terms, or how to delimit them, it is important to know the extent of this overlap. The Pb :U ratio, though not to be depended upon too minutely, does give a real idea of the age of a mineral as it increases with the decay of uranium, and so is greater the longer the time since the uranium was separated: and there are reasonable prospects of help there from in getting a knowledge of the relative age of different granites to assist in solving the problem, as facts already collected show. 1.
