It is well known that clays affect the flotation performance, and many of the refractory gold ores around the world contain clay minerals. Therefore, an ore sample from the Carlin Trend was selected for this study as these ores contain large quantities of clays. The presence of clay minerals in an ore makes it susceptible to a range of variables, such as the solution chemistry determined by pH and the chemistry of the rheology modifiers. The viscosity of the ore slurry was measured as a function of solid concentration and particle size distribution, in addition to using different rheology modifiers and pH regulators. The results were correlated with the ore flotation performance. It was found that various reagents known commonly as dispersants or rheology modifiers have different effects on the ore slurry viscosity. Using iron- and sulfur-oxidising bacteria to catalyse the breakdown of sulfides that host the gold is an important biological method for the pretreatment of refractory gold ores. Following this biological treatment a combination of chemical and physical methods are used for leaching (such as the cyanide process) and concentration (such as carbon-in-pulp or electrowinning) of gold. Although these methods are well accepted by industry, they harbour limitations in the processing of low-grade refractory ores, and regulatory agency/public acceptance of cyanide use. Thus, it is beneficial to industry to develop environmentally friendly, cost-efficient leaching and concentration techniques that are based on micro-organisms. This may soon be possible by adapting the results of recent regolith geoscience research, which has shown that micro- organisms are capable of driving a biogeochemical cycle of gold dispersion, transport and reconcentration in the supergene environment. The indigenous microbiota in biologically active soil microcosms from a number of Australian sites are capable of solubilising up to 80 wt per cent of the gold contained in these materials during 50 days of incubation. Studies using molecular microbial techniques have shown that a metallophilic bacterium, Ralstonia metallidurans, is present in biofilms on gold grains from a number of Australian sites. R metallidurans is capable of actively accumulating gold from solution, suggesting that the bacterium may contribute to the formation of secondary gold grains and nuggets. Identifying the biochemical and physiological pathways that lead to the dispersion and accumulation of gold in regolith, and quantifying the reaction kinetics of these processes may thus lead to the development of industrial bio-processing capacities for gold-containing ores.

Froth flotation is applied to mineral sand concentrates in order to produce commercially viable xenotime concentrates. Experiments indicate that a xenotime product containing 38% Y2O3 at 47% recovery or 34% Y2O3 at 83% recovery can be obtained from a 27% Y2O3 feed. The process involves a primary stage of reverse flotation at which oxide and silicate gangue is floated, and secondary stage of direct flotation at which xenotime is floated. Of the various collectors screened an amphoteric compound was found to be effective at both stages. This was made possible by the addition of sodium silicate at the second stage, which acted as depressant for the remainder of the gangue. Similar studies on a low grade feed material were somewhat unsatisfactory as the grade achieved fell short of what was targeted.

Tougher physical mining and processing conditions as well as economic circumstances are causing many mining companies to re-evaluate the effectiveness of their mine planning. The recent wave of inexpensive computing power provides the engineer an opportunity to go beyond the simple one-off manual mine design and production schedule. The basis of a good mine plan is a good reserves model. Concepts of mine model development are explored. The only advanced computer methods that have found consistent success in optimising mine planning functions are economic pit limits determination and material scheduling. Three pit 'optimisation' methods are examined; the moving cone, the Lerchs-Grossman 3-D graph algorithm, and the new network flow algorithm. A comparison between the methods in terms of total profits generated and computer time involved are made. The results show that both algorithms produced a higher profitability than the simple moving cone, but at much higher execution times. However, the profit increase never exceeded much more than 1 % of the base moving cone case. Finally, a method for the development of long range material production schedules with forward waste planning is presented.

The modern Golden Cross mine entered the production phase in January 1992. The project is designed to produce over 100 000 oz/yr of gold and over 300 000 oz/yr of silver during a mine life of eight years. An open pit and an underground mine are operated producing around 850 000 t/yr of ore, to feed a conventional carbon-in-leach processing plant. Golden Cross is owned in joint venture by Coeur Gold New Zealand Limited (80%) and Viking Mining Company Limited (20 %).   Since the start of production several major aspects of the design have altered. The underground mine began as a mechanised cut and fill operation. The cut and fill stoping progresses in 3.3 m flatback lifts with maximum stoping width of 6 m. Where the ore zone is wider than 6 m a post pillar cut and fill method is used. In 1993 a new bench mining plan was introduced between the 270 and 260 levels. Flatbacking continued in the footwall drives in anticipation of variability of the ore width and orientation. The development of levels below the main service 200 level has indicated a possibility of bulk mining the ore block rather than flatbacks. This could lower mining costs but also introduce higher dilution rates. Development is in the advanced stages for trialing this method.

The case study has identified and characterised additional subsidence arising from longwall mining above or under existing longwall goaf. It suggests that the magnitude, mechanisms and prediction methods for such additional subsidence are different between the two mining configurations. This paper presents a proposed method to predict maximum vertical subsidence due to longwall mining under existing longwall goaf. It suggests that, unless different results from further new cases become available, the findings presented in this article, including the aforementioned prediction method, be applicable to the majority of sites in New South Wales, where multi-seam longwall mining is to take place. This article also presents an important concept of 'overburden modification' due to multi-seam mining. A causal relationship between the above-mentioned additional subsidence and 'overburden modification' has been identified as a result of the case studies. Further investigations into the physical processes that cause such overburden modification will be fundamental to the understanding and management of multi-seam subsidence.

The quartz-cassiterite-wolfram veins at the Aberfoyle Tin Mine, north-eastern Tasmania, form a sheeted zone about 200 ft. wide and 1,600 ft. long in slightly contact metamorphosed shales, slates and greywackes, and are associated with a cupola of aplitic granite whose top is about 1,050 ft. below the present surface. Economic mineralization persists from the surface down to a vertical depth of 1,050 ft. to 1,100 ft., dying away in the vicinity of the cupola. Down to the 9-level there is a progressive increase in wolfram content of the veins, and a decline in cassiterite content, with increasing depth.The veins are banded or zoned, with a seivedge of muscovite on the wall. Cassiterite, wolfram and sphalerite occur inside the selvedges, projecting into a core of quartz of varying width. Other sulphides form the central part of some narrow veins, or occur as clots in the quartz. The general sequence of deposition of the ore minerals was: (1) cassiterite, wolfram; (2) arsenopyrite, pyrite, molybdenite; (3) pyrrhotite (in part); (4) blende-group minerals-chalcopyrite, sphalerite, stannite, pyrrhotite (in part)-as solid solutions; (5) galena, tetrahedrite, matildite, native bismuth, scheelite; (6) marcasite and secondary pyrite, magnetite and hematite. The sequence of deposition of the gangue minerals was: (1) fluorine-bearing minerals-muscovite topaz, apatite, triplite, fluorite-more or less contemporaneous with the cassiterite and wolfram;' (2) quartz-contemporaneous with the earlier sulphides; (3) carbonates--contemporaneous with the later sulphides. The stages overlapped somewhat.The composition of the sphalerite and heat treatment experiments with the solid solutions indicate that the blende-group sulphides were deposited at about 6000 C., and cooled rapidly, so that unmixing of the solid solutions was arrested. This accords with the likelihood that the country rock temperature was not above 2000 C. Annealing experiments at between 3500 C. and 6000 C. led to further precipitation from solid solution at the lower temperatures, and to significant segregation by solid diffusion within, a week, indicating that both deposition and cooling of the ore were rapid processes-completed in a matter of days. The economic success of cave mining projects is significantly influenced by the secondary fragmentation size distribution of the caved orebody and making the fragmented ore available for extraction. If the cave does not propagate as predicted, it may lead to stalled cave growth and/or localised preferential caving. This can cause significant ore loss and the inclusion of excessive waste in draw columns, both of which damage the economic value of the project. Uncontrolled caving can have severe consequences for the safety and economics of mines. Such safety risks include air blasts due to the formation of excessive air gaps and damage to infrastructure due to surface subsidence. Monitoring the cave-back delivers critical feedback that is required to exert control over its propagation and reduce the likelihood of adverse consequences. Current methods for monitoring cave propagation include access through open holes, microseismic monitoring systems, time domain reflectometers and extensometers. All of these monitoring systems rely on stable holes for installation and ongoing data collection. However, cables in holes often get sheared due to ground movement in the seismogenic zone well ahead of the cave front, rendering the systems useless. To resolve this issue, Elexon Mining, with the support of Rio Tinto, developed the Networked Smart Marker system, which is based on Elexon’s Smart Marker technology. This system provides a more robust and versatile alternative to other cave monitoring systems as the data is transmitted wirelessly through rock, and thus is not vulnerable to hole shearing/dislocation experienced with current cave monitoring systems. Installations at the Argyle block cave have proven that the Networked Smart Maker system can continue to provide information on the cave-back’s location long after all conventional monitoring systems have failed. A pilot plant was constructed for the low temperature carbonization of Wallarah (N.S.W.) coal at the rate of 300 lb/hr. The design was based on an entrained state carbonizer developed by Parry and D.S. Bureau of Mines co-workers. Prior to delivery to the client, the plant was successfully operated over periods of several days duration.INTRODUCTIONIn September 1961, the Australian Mineral Development Laboratories (A.M.D.L.) was engaged by the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. (B.H.P.) to design, construct and test an entrained state coal carbonizer with a capacity of 300 lb/hr of Wallarah (N.S.W.) coal. Char product was required within the specification 15·5 -I- 1 per cent volatile matter. The design was to be based on a pilot plant developed by Parry and others in the D.S. Bureau of Mines Coal Research Laboratory at Denver, D.S.A. The method involved the carbonization of fine coal by entrainment with air in an externally heated reactor. The heat required for the carbonization of the coal was to be supplied to the bed both through the reactor walls, and also by internal combustion of products in the bed. Several D.S. Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations weFe used as the main guide to the physical layout and proportions of the plant. However, the individual units required detailed designing, before engineering drawings could be prepared and fabrication begun.A 10 ton sample of crushed Wallarah coal was used for preliminary testing of the plant. The first test run on the pilot plant was carried out in February, 1962. After some modification a second test of longer duration was conducted in August, 1962. The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) is a rock (roof) mass classification (RMC) system/index that was originally developed by the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) for aspects of underground coalmine geotechnical design and was first introduced to Australia as a part of the original Analysis of Longwall Tailgate Serviceability (ALTS) project conducted in 1997/1998. In subsequent years further refinement to its calculation was undertaken, such that the CMRR is now an industry standard for quantifying the structural competence of the primary bolted roadway roof interval and has been routinely/widely used by Australian collieries over the last 25 years with great success for roof support/chain pillar design. There have been many publications discussing the use and calculation of RMC systems and this paper also provides an important update and recommendations in how best to calculate the CMRR. However, it is rare to find an explanation as to why and how a RMC system/index satisfactorily takes account of the mechanics and rock mass behavioural issues associated with ground reinforcement. This paper provides such an explanation and insight with respect to the CMRR so it is: 1) better understood, 2) to allay any concerns, and therefore 3) will continue to be confidently used by and for the collieries’ benefit.

Except for uranium search, conventional oil well logging techniques are relatively little-used in mining exploration. The main reasons for this are cost and an apparent lack of awareness of the potential use of the methods in the search for ore. However, relatively inexpensive portable units are currently available for performing the simpler electrical and radiometric logs in diamond drill holes.The emphasis in oil exploration logging programmes is largely on the estimation of porosity. In most mineral work, however, porosity is not very significant, and factors such as mineral conductivity and radioactivity assume an important role.The Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) during a programme to explore for uranium and associated base metals in the area east of Rum Jungle, N.T., carried out electrical and radiometric logging of diamond drill holes as a routine part of their investigations. Case histories are described in which the logs were used to aid in defining stratigraphic sequences and transgressive structures in base-metal prospects. Some surface geophysicalanomalies were explained by the logging: induced polarization and electromagnetic anomalies were related to black slate; and self-potential anomalies were related to oxidation of pyrite black slate, or apparent electrokineticeffects in the black slate. The logs provided an objective appraisal of the rock units penetrated and thereby helped to differentiate lithologies.Borehole logging, including newer techniques such as downhole analysis, could be done in geological and geophysical investigations in other areas for a relatively small cost with a considerable potential gain of information.

The feasibility of increasing the deportment of titanium species and the stability of the pseudobrookite solid solution (M3O5) in a titaniferous slag was investigated, to facilitate the valourisation of titaniferous slags. Thermochemical simulations using FactSage™ software, ver 8.3 (by Thermofact/CRTC and GTT-Technologies), and equilibration-quench experiments were conducted using an appropriate synthetic titaniferous slag composition in an oxygen partial pressure (pO2) ranging from air to 10-16 atm under non-isothermal conditions. The temperature-pressure phase stability diagram for the synthetic slag containing 37.19 per cent TiO2, 19.69 per cent SiO2, 13.12 per cent Al2O3, 16.00 per cent CaO and 14.00 per cent MgO showed that the spinel solid solution (M3O4) was the primary phase until a pO2 of 10-10.5 atm, thereafter M3O5 was the primary phase until a pO2 10-13.2 atm. M3O4 again was the primary phase between a pO2 10-13.2 and 10-16 atm. The changeover of the primary phase coincided with an increase in the liquidus surface. When cooling the slag in a pO2 of 10-16 atm, M3O5 crystallised as a ternary phase that showed a rapid increase in mass while that of the primary M3O4 phase decreased and that of the secondary perovskite (CaTiO3) phase increased at a slower rate. At 1300°C under sub-liquidus conditions, the contents of M3O5, M3O4 and CaTiO3 were about 20 per cent, 15 per cent, and 11 per cent, respectively. Experimental results showed that the Ti3+/Ti4+ mass ratio in the M3O5 phase, ie a measure of the reduction of titanium species, is not considerably sensitive to equilibration temperature in the reviewed range. Slow cooling and minimum/no oxidation during cooling of titaniferous slag would increase the deportment of titanium species to, and the growth and stability of the M3O5 phase.

Barrick Gold Granny Smith Mine is currently undergoing conversion from an open cut operation to an underground mine at the Wallaby deposit. The underground project commenced in 2005 with the development of the reserves immediately below the pit and is now currently entering a production ramp-up phase for mining of these two initial surfaces below the pit. With increasing gold prices the owner has been forced to re-evaluate the underground project and has decided to investigate the potential of a deep level mine. This deep level underground mine presents a collection of challenges with the most notable being exploitation of a series of well separated near horizontal lodes ranging in thickness from less than 1 to 20 m. A variety of room and pillar mining methods are employed for extraction with careful consideration to resource recovery and pillar design for long-term stability. Compounding these deep level challenges is a need to accelerate mine level development to maintain the production profile of the mine. This paper describes the challenges, key learnings and outcomes of the studies undertaken to date associated with this project.

Mining faces many environmental, social and regulatory liabilities of which water management is just one. Others include site rehabilitation, carbon emissions, biodiversity offsets, strategic cropping land, subsidence, and noise and dust generation. Management of these liabilities is commonly seen as a cost of doing business and each is often independently addressed, bypassing the opportunity to reduce costs through integrated approaches. Furthermore, approaches to dealing with these liabilities tend to be constrained by a prevailing culture of engineered solutions and lack of appreciation of risk associated with alternative and hybrid alternative-engineered solutions. Suboptimal outcomes can also be reinforced by rigid regulatory constraints. While the cost of addressing operational liabilities may be a small proportion of overall mine management costs, failure to do so effectively may influence social licence to operate and, as recently demonstrated by the decision of the NSW Land and Environment Court to block expansion of the Warkworth Mine near Singleton, absolute licence to operate.Integration of environmental, social and regulatory liabilities with value-creating and risk-reduction opportunities such as beneficial water use, carbon bio-sequestration, habitat connectivity, keyline farming, improved grazing design and management systems, windbreaks and visual screens, presents opportunities to reduce risk and create value. This potential may achieve overall improved outcomes in both economic and non-economic mine performance criteria.Two case studies in beneficial use of waste water from the mining and coal seam gas (CSG) sectors (which operate under different legislation) will be used to illustrate the potential to address mine development, operational and closure liabilities by understanding opportunities to reduce risk and create value through a holistic water management framework. The technical requirements and alternative approaches to beneficial use of mine water are addressed, along with the direct economic benefits for mine operational costs and opportunities to positively engage communities and build resilience into social licence to operate. Zircon producers are often required to lower impurity levels to meet customer specifications as most of these impurities adversely effect the end use. For example, zircon sand in foundry applications needs to be free of any surface impurities (eg clay, gibbsite and goethite) which otherwise could cause sintering or fusion between cast metal and the zircon mould. Light coloured ceramic grade zircon, typically low in iron oxides and titania, is preferred in ceramics applications. The presence of impurities in zircon sands is a problem in the magnetic and electrostatic separation stages of their concentration. Previous work (Aral et al, 1997) showed that impurities in zircon sand concentrates occurred in the form of stains on grain surfaces, discrete gangue minerals and in the mineral grains. The gangue minerals such as rutile, garnet, xenotime, monazite, spinels, ilmenite, and aluminium silicates in the concentrate in some cases (Aral et al, 1997) contribute significantly to the impurity content of the concentrate. A careful hand picking of the impurity grains from a Western Australian zircon sand showed that the impurity content of the concentrate could be lowered significantly as a result of the removal of the surface stained grains and gangue minerals. The hand-picked ædirtyÆ fraction, comprised about eight per cent by weight of the concentrate, and consisted mostly of iron-oxide/hydroxide-stained zircon, silica grains and rutile, and occasionally ilmenite, monazite, gahnite and other (unidentified) coloured grains. The chemical analysis of the remaining æcleanÆ fraction showed that the major impurities (Fe and Ti) were reduced significantly (Table 1). The reduction in the uranium content was about 30 per cent. The other measured impurities, P, Mg, Al, Th, and Ca remained mostly unchanged as shown in Table 1. The contribution of ilmenite to the overall iron content of æcleanÆ zircon was insignificant as it comprised about 0.1 per cent weight of the æcleanÆ zircon. Rutile was the major source of titanium contamination (about one per cent by weight). Recent work (Aral and Calle, 1999) on zircon sand concentrates from the Murray Basin showed that, under the electron microprobe, the bulk of the impurities occurred in the dark back scattered electron (BSE) regions of the zoned zircon grains. The impurity contents of the light BSE regions and unblemished (unzoned) grains were low. The impurity content in zoned zircons has been investigated on single, relatively large, crystals (McLaren, Gerald and Williams, 1994; Smith et al, 1991; Romans, Brown and White, 1975). These studies generally aimed to investigate the incorporation of U in zircon as zircon is used extensively for U-Pb geochronology owing to its relatively high content of uranium. Smith et al (1991) identified a striking difference in composition between the areas of lower (dark BSE) and higher (light BSE) average atomic number in the zoned zircon. Their work showed in particular that the zones of lower atomic numbers contained very significant amounts of trace metals such as Y, REE, Nb, U, Al, Fe, Ca, Ba and, by difference H2O. In this paper the impurity distribution in zoned zircon grains was investigated on statistically significant number of grains before and after a leach treatment. The distribution of impurities was also measured in unblemished areas to compare the results.

The external urfaces and interiors (as polished sections) of particles of coconut hell and extruded peat activated carbons taken from everal Australian carbon-in-pulp operations were examined with an optical micro cope, a scanning electron microscope, and an electron microprobe.Calcium carbonate (calcite) precipitated from the pulp was the major inorganic material on the external surfaces of the carbon particle, but several ore minerals, including quartz, hematite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, and clay minerals were also identified, along with trona, gypsum, a nickel cyanide, and a magnesium salt. Sections of carbon particles showed that calcite was virtually the only introduced inorganic material inside the carbons.It was distributed in the pores and cracks throughout the coconut shell carbon particles but tended to be concentrated in the outer layers of the extruded peat carbon particles. The mechanism of calcite formation and deposition is uncertain. Gold X-ray dot maps showed that gold was distributed through to the centre of coconut shell carbons and to a depth of at least 500 µm in extruded peat carbons. The distribution of gold within the carbon particles was similar to that of calcite.

Co-disposal of partly-dewatered mixed-plant rejects (MPR) from coal processing into spoil dumps is gaining favour amongst Australian coalmine operators in preference to conventional tailings disposal methods which require a tailings dam. Owing to their often low permeabilities and high degrees of saturation, MPR materials may be prone to the development of excess pore pressures when covered by spoil during routine dump advancement. The likelihood of dump failure will increase if these pore pressure regimes and the associated delay of shear strength development are not accounted for during waste dump design. To date however, little is known about these pore pressure regimes due to the complexities associated with their in situ measurement.This paper describes the in situ measurement of pore pressures in a cell of MPR placed within a coalmine spoil dump. Four vibrating wire piezometers (VWPs) were placed within a cell that was then filled with MPR and allowed to consolidate under self-weight before advancing an adjacent tiphead across the cell. The VWPs recorded the transient pore pressures during MPR placement and dump construction, and their interpretations are described within the context of laboratory measured parameters. Resource rent taxes are taxes which only become effective at such a time as a pre-determined rate of return has been achieved by an operation. Resource Rent Taxes have from time to time been considered for implementation in bothAustralia and New Zealand. The offshore petroleum industry in Australia is already subject to RRT as is the Roxby Downs (Olympic Dam) Mine in South Australia. Both the mining and petroleum taxation regimes in Papua New Guinea include a resource rent tax component called Additional Profits Tax.   The implications of the current form of additional profits tax for shareholder cash returns are that the tax burden on the operation may suddenly increase at some stage in the life of the mine if and when the threshold level of profitability for the tax to be triggered is exceeded. From that point in time onwards the cash return to the shareholders on the capital invested is greatly diminished. For mining companies in Papua New Guinea, the effective tax rate increases from 35% to 57.75% as a result of the onset of additional profits tax. This tax rate penalty is so severe that there appears to be merit in considering the concept of managing profitability through time rather than purely maximising annual pre-tax profits as is currently the case in most mining operations. This would have the benefit of deferring or perhaps preventing altogether the onset of the tax. One possible method for the effective management of profitability is through the control of average mining grade by cutoff grade manipulation.   Traditional cutoff grade theory has usually considered taxation as a direct cost at a fixed or variable percentage of annual profits. As a result of this most analyses are conducted on a pre-tax basis. If tax is included in analyses it is usually present as a time independent function of gross profit. Additional profits tax is both time, and rate of return dependent and therefore not adequately accommodated by currently accepted cutoff grade theory.   A review has been made of the effects of resource rent taxes on both the investment decision-making process as well as possible development and mining strategies which may be employed by mining companies faced with resource rent taxes. The review includes examples based on the structure of additional profits tax which is levied in Papua New Guinea.

The breakage and flow characteristics of quartz, ground as a minor constituent with calcite in a continuous wet ball mill, have been determined by carefully controlled grinding tests.A mathematical model, combining the simple functions which describe these characteristics, has been used to predict both steady state and non steady state results.The calculated results are compared with experimental data.
