RME has a vision for a new mill operational paradigm made possible by RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System. This vision can be moved forward into reality at any time with or without guidance from recent development in measurement and predictive modelling tools.Some new liner designs can degrade SAG mill performance because of mill volume loss, ball strike (rotational speed limitations) and other issues often brought about by optimising liners for life and without a backward glance at metallurgical consequences. Freshly relined mills can initially produce as little as 80 per cent of their maximum throughput, that maximum occurring toward the end of the linersÆ wear life. RMEÆs proposition is to design new liners for maximum commercial performance. This may mean more frequent changes of liners but with liners designed to yield optimum grinding, metallurgical and profitability performance. In other words, mill liner profiles and mill relining speed become key operational controls and not simply æmust doÆ maintenance functions. Taken to the extreme, liner profiles may prove capable of ætuningÆ a grinding plant for maximum profitability in any metal price environment. This paper provides an update regarding RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System technologies and outlines RMEÆs vision of a æliner profile versus profitabilityÆ model as a function of metal price, developed intuitively or by using a combination of new measurement and modelling technologies. These new measurement and modelling tools provide the opportunity to predict the optimum commercial outcome, off-line in the virtual world, before committing to an expensive liner experiment.

One of the most significant technical and practical challenges facing the tunnel construction team on the Legacy Way road tunnel project in Brisbane, Australia was how to erect the prestressed precast concrete slabs to form the smoke duct in the tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnels.An essential part of the tunnel ventilation system, the smoke duct extends the full length of the 4.6 km-long twin two-lane tunnels. The vast majority of the tunnels (approximately 4.3 km) were constructed using two 12.4 m diameter double-shield TBMs. The refurbished Herrenknecht machines broke several world records on the way to completing the tunnel excavation works in just over nine months. With the excavation complete the focus turned to solving the complex civil tunnel fit-out challenges. A key component of the civil fit-out of the tunnels was constructing the smoke duct in the TBM tunnels, which was designed as a precast solution.The slabs, which each measure 8.62 m long × 2.0 m wide × 200 mm thick and weigh close to 9?t, need to be erected above cast in situ corbels whilst other tunnel finishing works continue. The space-proofing clearance offered by the design to the support corbels below and the precast segmental lining above was in the order of only 100 mm.This paper tells the story of how the Transcity Joint Venture (JV) tunnel fit-out team comprising some of Europe and Australia’s leading tunnel construction specialists drew upon the global strengths of the existing JV member companies and the global reach of leading TBM manufacturer Herrenknecht to develop an innovative system in solving this challenging problem. When the Mining Bill came before the Victorian Legislature not so many months ago, the question arose whether mining managers required education, and to what extent. Some members of the House expressed themselves in a way which appeared to leave the impression that mining managers would be all the better if they were not brought up in a scientific school.To try and prove what we owe to science I will give a short history of colonial mining from the earlier period to the present time and compare results.I believe I am right in saying that South Australia is the pioneer colony in mining and to her belongs the credit of not dnly being the first mining colony, but also that her beginning turned out so successful, as the history of the Burra Burra copper mine will testify. At about the same time a little galena mining was carried on nearer to Adelaide, but as this did not prove a success and was only worked by tributing parties, little notice was taken of it.

Increasing demands on quality of metallurgical grade alumina and for lower production costs led to the development of a new fluid bed calcining process. The process, jointly developed in Germany by Vereinigte Aluminium Werke A. G. and Lurgi Gesellschaften m.b.H., takes advantage of modern chemical engineering methods such as counter-current flow of combustion air and solids, direct heat-exchange between combustion air and fine solids, and near stoichiometric combustion of oil in a fluid bed. Using a two-stage Venturi-type suspension preheater for heat-recovery from combustion flue-gases, the circulating fluid bed technique with internal oil combustion at 220°F for the calcining step and a five-stage fluidized bed cooler for heat-recovery from calcines, the process gives an outstanding heat-efficiency. In a first industrial plant for 560 sh. tons/day of alumina heat consumption figures of less than 1·400 B.T.U./lb Al203 g were achieved.

Longwall mining and related subsidence, and watercourse diversion for surface mining operations have the potential to impact on fluvial geomorphic processes and the health of river systems. This is evident in the Isaac River in central Queensland. The scale and likelihood of these impacts are a function of the extent of existing and proposed mining developments and of the ongoing geomorphic, hydrologic and ecological processes within the Isaac River. Understanding the objectives for the river, the past and ongoing processes at work, the cumulative impacts of longwall mining development and the options for managing those impacts is essential for the development of an effective strategy to manage the health of the river system. An assessment has been undertaken to identify and understand the cumulative impacts of mining subsidence and other mining influences on geomorphic processes and waterway health in the Isaac River over a river length of approximately 100 km near Moranbah in central Queensland. The assessment included the development of a vision and objectives for waterway health. The assessment has identified mining and landuse changes that have impacted on the hydrology, geomorphology, ecology and hence the health of the Isaac River. The assessment has then sought to identify the cumulative impact of longwall mining and related subsidence on current stream condition and the proposed vision for the system. The primary impact of longwall mining on the river was found to be associated with sediment transport. The investigation included assess- ment of total sand available for transport, the volume of sand transported annually and the fluvial process response to subsidence. Recommendations have been developed for the management of the system and for longwall mining to increase system robustness and achieve the river health objectives.

During the last 125 years, the steel industry has witnessed revolutionary changes in the process of steelmaking. The Bessemer process was the predominant steel production technology during the last two decades of the 19th century. The open hearth process accounted for the lion's share of world steel production for six decades from 1910 to 1970. With the appearance of the LD process on the industrial stage in 1952, the importance of open hearth process declined and currently the basic oxygen processes are contributing more than 60 per cent of the world steel production. The LD process also led to the development of several other oxygen blown processes such as LDAC, OLP, OBM, QBOP, EOF, Clc.

The REGCHEM (Regional Exploration Geochemistry) stream sediment geochemistry database of open file mining company data, managed by GNS Science, was recently made accessible via the internet (http://maps.gns.cri.nz/website/minmap/). REGCHEM provides coverage of selected elements in mineral rich areas of New Zealand. Analysis of REGCHEM data highlights problems with inconsistencies between different surveys in terms of sampling methods, number and types of elements analysed, analytical techniques and detection limits. New, consistent multi-element geochemical surveys with national coverage are required. To test sampling, analytical and data treatment techniques for the new surveys, a pilot stream sediment geochemical survey was carried out in the Thames area, Hauraki Goldfield. Seventy samples were collected in an area of 220 km2 representing about one sample every 3 km2. The samples were analysed for 50 elements, mostly by XRF.   Regional patterns are apparent in the concentrations of some elements. Several elements, such as As, Cd, Cu, K, Pb, Sb, Se, and Zn exhibit anomalous concentrations mainly in the western part of the study area, related to Au-Ag-Zn-Pb-Cu epithermal quartz veins and porphyry Cu occurrences in hydrothermally altered andesitic terrane.   Mercury is anomalous in southern samples, reflecting cinnabar occurrences in the Kauaeranga valley (eg Mangakirikiri), and the occurrence of cinnabar as a late stage mineral in some of the Thames epithermal veins. Ba and U are anomalous in the eastern samples, and these anomalies are probably related to the presence of rhyolitic rocks in the eastern part of the project area.

As environmental costs incurred by the mining industry become increasingly subject to critical analysis, new technology is necessary to ensure the further development of good relationships between the industry and community. Phytoremediation and phytomining are technologies that have the potential to capture the imagination and approval of the public. Phytoremediation , the in situ use of plants to extract heavy metals from a contaminated substrate, could offer an environmentally and cost-friendly alternative to traditional remediation techniques. Phytomining is the in situ removal of metals from a contaminated site or subeconomic orebody with the additional aim of recovering from the plant an economic amount of metal. Plants used in such operations, hyperaccumulators, accumulate large quantities of one or more target metals in their above-ground herbage. Upon harvesting and incineration, this plant material yields a low-volume, sulphide-free æbio-oreÆ, which can either be safely disposed of, or if the metal is of sufficient value, smelted. Investigations into the economics of phytomining nickel from ultramafic (serpentine) soils, showed that Alyssum bertolonii and Berkheya coddii could remove over 100 kg of nickel per hectare per annum from land with nickel concentrations well below the cut-off grade for conventional mining. It also appears possible to æinduceÆ the hyperaccumulation of gold into plants growing on gold tailings, or on stockpiled, low-grade gold ore. The plants used for phytoremediation and phytomining are useful colonisers as they are necessarily hardy and withstand extremes of salinity, metal toxicity and water stress that hinder the success of current revegetation procedures. As part of a rehabilitation operation, these plants may alter the geochemistry of a substrate making it more amenable to the growth of native species that should be used to restore a mining site to pre-operating conditions.

A brief review is given of the history of the Colliery to date together with the reasons for the development of an additional seam.Investigations into the quality of the coal ami its suitability for the production of metallurgical coke and determination of the economic mining limits and coal reserves are discussed. The commencement of mining operations and the inter-seamarrangements necessary for the disposal of coal won are described with the stages in the opening out of the seam itself and the reasons for the installation of a 48-in. trunk conveyor belt. Choke and manning of face equipment are considered and also the work of secondary development and pillar extraction.It is concluded that with modern face equipment and conveyor belt lines, concentrated mining followed by immediate extraction of pillars is practicable and is giving excellent results at Burwood Colliery.INTRODUCTIONBurwood Colliery, the total holding of which now comprises some 3,140 acres of land and 1,450 acres of sea leases, has mined the Borehole Seam since 1883. The early work took place from Nos. 1 and 2 shafts at Glenrock Lagoon and later on at Nos. 3 and 4 shafts at Whitebridge to which the centre of operations shifted in 1893, shaft sinking at this latter area having commenced in 1888.As all the early operations were confined to the Borehole Seam, reserves of coal on this horizon had been considerably reduced by the mid 1930's, so a cross measure drift was driven to the Victoria Tunnel Seam which is about 300 ft. above the Borehole Seam, and fully mechanized coal winning commenced from the second seam in 1938. Fine coal particles have been examined with respect to dustiness and its connection with various physical and chemical properties. It appears that a given coal will tend to be dusty ifthe moisture content is low and if the inert maceral content and overall rank are high. The hydrophobicity ofa coking coal (Young-Wallsend) and a steaming coal (Blair Athol) was examined in detail by a dynamic contact angle technique. The YoungWallsend coal had a higher contact angle, on average, than the Blair Athol sample. This result has important implications for dust suppression and associated processes.

THE following notes were accumulated during the years 1905 to 1911, when the writer was employed at Stannary Hills. The writer's duty took him over the underground workings daily. In odd moments the geology of the surrounding country was worked out. As the time for this purpose was limited, many interesting points had to be left, untouched. The faulting system in the mines was of such a puzzling character that it seemed as if the geology of the surrounding district might throw some light on it. Dr Jack, in 1907, reported on these mines for the shareholders, but came to no definite conclusions. Unfortunately, the writer has not had access to this report for many years. At the time of his visit the larger develbpments in the Ivanhoe and, Kitchenen orebodies (see Fig 1, B2) were only being opened up. Mr. H. Herman mentions Stannary Hills on p 320, Proceedings Aust Inst ME, new series, No 14, and on p 326 expresses the opinion that the pipe or joint-veins (as at Irvine bank and Stannary Hills) were more valuable to follow than lodes in the granite in that district.GEOLOGY OF DISTRICTThe main feature of the area mapped is a band of altered sedimentary rocks which carry no fossils. It is a mile wide, and consists of a hard band of greywackes 200 ·t ·300 yds. wide, flanked on both sides by contorted shales which become more micaceous as the granite-area to the east is approached. The strata have a general strike of N. 30° W., with a steep westerly dip. A large area of acid intrusive rocks occurs to the west of this band. "In 2015 operations under the ownership and/or management of all Newmont Mining Corporation subsidiaries (Newmont) produced 5.7 Moz of gold and 619 Mlb of copper from mining operations in five countries, with well over 100 Mt of ore processed by various grinding technologies. Processing methods used in the extraction of metals include flotation, oxidation, conventional cyanidation and heap leaching. The grinding technologies applied in milling operations feeding metal recovery processes include conventional wet grinding semi-autogenous grinding (SAG), rod and ball, dry grinding, concentrate regrinding and ultra-fine grinding, and ball milling of high pressure grinding roll product. SAG/ball (SAB) configurations represent the dominant comminution flow sheet within the company and the circuit configurations employed include SAB, SABC-A, SABC-B and single-stage (SS) SAG milling, with SAG mill feed ranging from run-of-mine (ROM) ore through to secondary crusher product. The collective experiences earned from designing, operating and debottlenecking these various comminution circuits provide many lessons that can be applied to the design and optimisation of future operations. "'Optimisation' has become a catchcry among many mining companies looking to tell the market how mining businesses will be improved and shareholder value increased. Consequently, the term 'optimisation' has been adopted by many service providers as they look to assist mining companies in achieving their objectives. But the explosion of services and products being offered with the label 'optimisation' has created some confusion. Mining companies ask for help in 'optimising' and service providers offer their assistance because they have a product that has the word 'optimisation' in its title. This is of course an over-simplification, but not by much! The authors' discussions in recent years with both mining companies and service providers have uncovered a number of very different definitions of optimisation.This paper provides a framework for identifying the scope and approach of different mining optimisation products and services, particularly the distinction between optimisation of components of the operation and the business as a whole. The different types of business optimisation are discussed, highlighting the failings of the mining industry's typical approach of strategy selection (as opposed to strategy optimisation). Mining business optimisation is discussed as a wicked problem, with the implication of this on how strategy optimisation models should be used and what the objectives of a business optimisation study should be.Case studies are also included to illustrate how fully flexible strategy optimisation models have been applied to assist decision-makers understand the impacts of changes in one part of the operation on the whole mining and treatment process, from geological models to the sale of product to customers.CITATION:Kahler, D B and Hall, B E, 2016. The passage of chloroform vapour in a carrier of oxygen through two nickel sulphide ores heated to 380°C converted the nickel to the water soluble chloride form. In one ore the nickel (2·75 per cent) was presentas violarite ((Ni, Fe)3S4) whereas in the second it was present as pentlandite, ((Fe, Ni)9S8) (4·9 per cent Ni).A similar technique was utilized to convert nickel in nickeliferous laterites (1·6 per cent Ni) into a soluble chloride using town gas instead of oxygen as a carrier.With both techniques greater than 90 per cent extraction was achieved.

In the Broken Hill South mine tile practice of issuing to the miner a quantity of fuse and a box of caps from which he made up the "rods" required for a particular blast, has been abandoned. Instead, capping stations have been established, and the miner can now obtain, from the magazines, fuses cut to accurate lengths with the detonators attached.Various types of fuse-cutting machines and crimping devices are available, but only those used by the Broken Hill South Mine Ltd. are described in this paper.The fuse-cutting machine, designed by the engineering staff, is an electrically driven unit fitted with a gear box for the purpose of adjusting the rate at which the fuse is fed to the cutting device, thereby enabling fuses of various lengths to be accurately severed from the main coil of fuse.The machine in question is designed to cut 4, 6, and 8-ft. fuses, but no difficulty should be experienced in designing a machine to cut fuses to any required lengths.

Properties of the soil profile fundamentally control water-limited ecosystems. Soil water availability affects vegetation dynamics of plant communities, but is also affected by these communities in return. Understanding this eco-hydrological interplay and the role of physical soil restoration is crucial for successful rehabilitation and management of post-mining landscapes in semi-arid areas. However, uncertainties exist in both the mathematical description of plant communities within ecological submodels and the predictability of future rainfall events. This study uses information gap decision theory combined with an ecohydrological system model to investigate how both uncertainties impact decision-making in the context of ecosystem rehabilitation. A range of management strategies are investigated to identify the optimal soil thickness for successful rehabilitation of native plant communities in Central Queensland. The results emphasise that thicker soils can counterbalance uncertainty in mathematical description of plant communities by increasing the simulated survival probability of plant communities. However, the influence of thicker soils on the robustness of plant communities against a change in future rainfall amount is rather marginal. By allocating an economic value for restoring a particular thickness of soil layer, these results can be used to evaluate the costs of ecosystem re-establishment with regard to two target measures - the survival probability of the plant community and their robustness against climate change.CITATION:Arnold, S, 2012. Rb-Sr measurements on total-rock samples of granitic rocks from the Mount Isa region have confirmed the existence of two periods of granite-forming activity. The Kalkadoon Granite, together with the Ewen Granite and possibly an older phase of the Sybella Granite, has been shown to belong to the earlier age-group at 1760 m.y.; the Wimberu Granite and a pegmatite associated with the Sybella Granite have been dated at 1540 m.y. The initial Sr ratio suggests that the Wimberu Granite may be new material of deep-seated origin.Further Rb-Sr measurements have confirmed previously-reported K-Ar results upon biotites from these rocks, whilst showing that, in this metamorphic terrain, biotites have lost varying amounts of radiogenic Sr and Ar, and therefore yield ages which are younger than the true age of the second event.

The mining industry is experiencing change in the governance of tailings facilities (TFs). Guidance and regulations across many jurisdictions contribute to this amorphous change. The Canadian Dam Association, Mining Association of Canada, Australian National Committee on Large Dams, and the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management, produced by the International Council on Mining and Metals, are establishing guidelines for more rigorous industry governance. Evolving guidance regarding TFs is developing concurrently with a shortage of experienced tailings engineers, which adversely affects the resource base available to support new governance. This paper presents an updated semi-quantitative estimate of the impending resource shortage of qualified tailings professionals. Updates are provided herein for the estimated number of TFs worldwide, which included available data on active and inactive TFs, as well as the estimated labor resources required to service these facilities. The tailings labor shortage is discussed in the context of academic and professional training currently available to increase the quantity of trained personnel. This paper represents a discrete moment in time as contributions to the available information and inventories accessed continue to improve, but as of today are incomplete. However, the data and information included provide insight into the resource deficiencies currently within our profession, training and education opportunities to address those resource deficiencies, and a snapshot of a recent professional training course offered on mine tailings.

Copper, zinc, lead, and silver in the discordant magmatic-hydrothermal orebody of the Conrad Mine, N.S.W., all have a relatively high mean abundance. Any single concordant sulphide orebody containing the same metals has a similar order of mean abundance of only one or two of these, particularly copper, copper and zinc, or zinc and lead.The relative abundances of the metals in the Conrad orebody vary more widely than in concordant orebodies, and the lead-zinc-silver and copper-zinc-lead relationships are significantly different.INTRODUCTIONIn previous investigations of metal abundances in sulphide ores, the basis of selection of the orebodies was their form, and to some extent their geological setting, rather than hypotheses concerning their origin. In all cases they were generally concordant with the bedding of the sedimentary or meta-sedimentary rocks enclosing them, and most occurred in volcanic-sedimentary sequences. Their mineralogies were simple, and they were copper, copper-zinc, zinc or lead-zinc rich in composition. Most were of the type ascribed by several authors to exhalative-sedimentary processes.In one of these investigations (Stanton, 1958), it was pointed out that since the metals in ores of this type showed similar abundance patterns and behaviour, it would clearly be of interest to examine, and to compare with them, orthomagmatic and vein types, unquestionably derived from their igneous rock associates.The present investigation is concerned with a single orebody, of clearly discordant type, and of indisputable hydrothermal origin. The abundance and behaviour of copper, zinc, lead, and silver have been determined and compared to similar data fOl!' the concordant type. Such a comparison tests the possibility that metal abundance patterns of base metal ores may be indicative of the mode of ore deposition.

Mining schools around the world, many unfortunately now closed, were often established to teach the techniques of narrow vein mining and associated processing to students studying part-time while working in the industry. This arrangement ensured graduates (or æassociatesÆ) had a mix of skills and knowledge invaluable to the industry.It is argued that there is still a need to educate students in these narrow vein techniques and that there will be a growing demand for such graduates with a high level appreciation of this type of mining. There is also a need for innovation in narrow vein mining and processing to develop specific technologies and allow the use of techniques applied in æbulk miningÆ to achieve improvements in productivity, safety and economic performance.This paper aims to review the situation with regard to education and innovation in narrow vein mining.CITATION:Hall, S, 2012.
