Ventilation modelling is used to evaluate ventilation system performance. This paper describes modelling to assess potential changes to a single entry longwall ventilation circuit to improve ventilation and gas management. The longwall panel is extracting a 215 metre face in a 1.5 metre coal seam at a depth of 900 to 1000 metres below surface. The 1.5 metre B seam is located approximately 25 metres below the main 3.0 metre A seam and the gas content of both coal seams is approximately 20 to 25 m3/t. The B seam is extracted prior to the A seam and the mine relies on fracturing of the overlying strata to induce gas emission from the A seam to reduce the gas content prior to mining. Longwall operations in the B seam are constrained by limited ventilation and high gas emissions. Due in part to statutory limits on gas concentration and air velocity, the average longwall production rate is approximately 700 t per day.Gate roads in the B seam are single entry, developed using road headers and supported with steel arches. Additional timber cog support is installed to reduce roadway closure from abutment loading. Due to the slow advance of gate road development, mine management were reluctant to consider significant mine design changes, such as two heading gate roads; therefore, the investigation focused on determining the extent to which ventilation and gas emission impacted on longwall production performance, while recommending short-term, low-cost actions to improve ventilation and gas management to support increased longwall production.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. So many emergencies that crop up in mining necessitate a departure from ordinary methods that the writer has been led to illustrate a few of the examples that have come under his notice during a somewhat lengthy career; and as most of the methods illustrated are certainly outside the ordinary, it may be hoped that while to many they may convey little that is new, to the larger number some acceptable information may be gleaned whenever the occasion calls for it. Experience has shown that there can be no hard and fast rule in mine timbering that will fit the varying- necessities of different localities, and the engineer must divest his mind of all prejudices that his practice of any particular system or systems may have induced, and must direct his attention to the character of the local timber and its fitness or otherwise for the purpose he has in view. Fortunate indeed are the man and mine that can claim an abundance of good and cheap mining timber it simplifies, oftentimes, what would be, under unfavourable timber conditions, a difficult problem. In many parts of the States there is either none or at best a scrub if the latter, he has to either pigstye, balk, or bulkhead, if his ground will permit; if, not, and the necessary timber has to be imported, then some system of recovering his timber and using it over and over again may be possible. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Yaojialing zinc-gold polymetallic deposit is a newly discovered, large skarn deposit in the Middle-Lower Yangtze metallogenic belt, East China. It is located in the transitional zone between the Tongling uplift block and the Fanchang faulted basin. It is mainly hosted in the contact zone between early Cretaceous granodiorite porphyry and Carboniferous-Triassic limestone, or occurs in limestone xenoliths within the intrusion. Skarn and stratabound massive sulfide orebodies are the primary ore styles. Sulfide ?34SV-CDT values indicate a magmatic sulfur source, in common with most deposits in the Tongling block. Calcite d13CV-PDB and d18OV-SMOW ratios reveal that marine carbonates were the major source of carbon in late-stage hydrothermal fluids. Addressing community concerns in relation to an economic activity, particularly when it causes significant community impacts, is especially important for the development of extractive industry projects. Pipelines comprise an integral part of many hydrocarbon developments, which may cause different effects on local economic development, communities and the environment compared with open cast mines. This paper explores community impacts associated with a case study of the oil pipeline æEastern Siberia-Pacific OceanÆ in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia. Based on semi-structured interviews, conducted in 2006 - 2008 in Russia, the paper investigates claims of local communities about potential impacts of the pipeline development of their environments and economic activities as well as community claims for greater involvement in sharing the benefits from this major infrastructure project. A community of Indigenous people, Evenk, is likely to be most profoundly affected by the development due to impacts on their traditional activities such as hunting and reindeer herding. The paper examines in detail the regional economic, social, environmental and Indigenous peoples concerns over the construction of the oil pipeline and investigates actions and methods adopted by community organisations to voice their concerns about the pipeline development. Finally, the paper assesses the process of interaction between the pipeline developers and regional stakeholders.

Total mechanisation in the Western district of New South Wales is quite a recent addition to productive methods in that State, for it was only in 1940 that the first colliery was equipped for this method of winning coal. Now almost all mines either are totally mechanised or are planning to get their coal by these means.This marked change in recent years is explained by the salient features of the industry's history. Collieries in New South Wales had generally been subjected to low selling prices forced on them by over-production and severe competition. Little money was available out of profits to purchase machinery, and returns on capital were so poor that inducement to invest money in the industry was nonexistent.The second world war brought price fixing at the already low prices. It was not until the post-war period that there has been any inducement to mechanise.Much credit for mechanisation can be given to the Joint Coal Board, a government body formed in 1948. Pursuing a broad plan for the rejuvenation of the industry, this Board, purchased large quantities of machinery for use in, mines under hire-purchase agreement. These agreements encouraged machine mining, and this fact, together with the ensuing production economies, has improved the financial position of the industry.The Board has also been instrumental in the granting of increases in the fixed price of coal, so that the industry has been given an even greater boost in the direction of mechanisation.

This paper describes the new legislative regime that will apply to the regulation of the minerals industry in New Zealand. The reform of New ZealandÆs minerals legislation was initiated in January 1988 when the Minister for the Environment, Rt Hon Geoffrey Palmer, announced the Governments intention to review all the major laws governing New ZealandÆs resources. The Resource Management Bill is scheduled for introduction to the House in December 1989 and its date of enactment is scheduled for June 1990. With some matters still to be determined (at the time of writing), this paper cannot be a definitive review and description of the new legislation, it is instead an attempt to outline the major features of the Bill, to date, that are seen as important to the mining industry.

At its most basic level, minerals project management may be broken down into a series of logical chronological phases, described in this paper as: exploration, discovery; scoping and pre-feasibility; feasibility and approval; project financing and commissioning; operation; expansion and closure. Each phase has its own peculiarities and challenges, any one of which can potentially upset the forward progress of a minerals project.Reference is made to each of these project phases based on the authorÆs many years of first-hand experience, in an attempt to identify issues within the project management spectrum where additional caution may be warranted. Left un-addressed, these issues can cause undue delays in the project timeline, ultimately delaying approval at significant project cost.Finally, reference is made to the Mine ManagerÆs Handbook recently published by the AusIMM which is an excellent project management resource, considered to be very relevant for minerals treatment plant managers, whether the context be constructing, operating, expanding or shutting down.CITATION:Dunlop, J S, 2013. With the increased focus on the need for more uranium mines, this paper presents the design process currently underway for the development of the Millennium deposit in northern Saskatchewan, Canada. This deposit, located 630 - 750 m below surface, will be accessed by two shafts and will be mined by blasthole stoping methods at less than 500 t/d. Mining grade will approximate two per cent U3O8 and mine life is expected to be six to seven years. The project is a joint venture between Cameco, AREVA and JCU. This paper discusses in detail methods used to predict worker radiation exposures, the methods used to monitor the work environment and procedures unique to the uranium industry necessary to minimise worker radiation exposures.

This paper provides an update to a paper by the author on an overseas explorer's perception of New Zealand, presented at the 1997 New Zealand Minerals & Mining Conference. New Zealand has one of the most open and internationally competitive economies in the world. The petroleum exploration industry in New Zealand is booming with a record number of wells planned for 2000. New Zealand is keen to encourage investment in mineral exploration to develop its natural resources. A study of the geological potential of New Zealand estimated the value of known and potential resources of metals at $86 billion. Gold has the greatest potential, with a total resource estimated at $33.5 billion. The price of gold has averaged NZ$554 since the beginning of 1998, and NZ$593 in the last year, which is very competitive with other countries. An assessment of country risk compared New Zealand with twenty other countries in ten risk categories: sovereign risk, land access, environmental issues, land claims, mining legislation, social risk, infrastructure, civil unrest, natural disasters and workforce. New Zealand ranked fifth, showing it has low country risk. This provides a high degree of certainty for investment, which is important for the perception of New Zealand as an exploration destination. Corruption was considered separately, and New Zealand ranked third out of ninety countries, showing it is one of the least corrupt countries in the world. New Zealand has a favourable business environment, good geological potential, low country risk and no corruption. Despite this, New Zealand has not registered on the radar screens of overseas mineral explorers, and the positive factors appear to have been overlooked. New Zealand has considerable undeveloped mineral potential, and with the current rise in commodity prices, it is hoped New Zealand can participate in a resurgence in mineral exploration.

THE object of the air-tight stopping is either to prevent a current of fresh air from getting into the fire area, or to prevent an escape of fumes and gases from the fire area into the workings of the mine. In the former case all is "plain sailing," but in the latter case there are certain difficulties to be overcome.In the Broken Hill Proprietary mine there were two styles of stopping used during the last fire-brick and bag and the following were the chief points that determined the use of one in preference to the other:-If the required stopping were to be more or less permanent, bricks were used, also if the area to be blocked were large-bricks being so much lighter and easier to handle than bags filled with -skimps. If, however, the air contained much gas, a bag stopping was put up. Great difficulty was experienced in getting essentially surface men, such as bricklayers, to work where there was the; slightest trace of gas; miners, however, would willingly do the work, and a bag stopping could be built without skilled labour.In old drives and gangways, where there was the liability of settlement, the bag stoppings were preferable to brick. The slightest movement around the sides or foundations of the latter would cause cracks, thus rendering the brick stopping useless;whereas, in the former, there was a certain amount of elasticity.

"The demand for fine and ultra-fine grinding associated with the processing of more challenging, finer grained orebodies and the global driver of minimising energy consumption has been an increased focus in our industry. Outotec’s stirred milling technology, the high intensity grinding mill (HIGmill™), was launched in 2012 in response to this industry need. First Quantum Minerals Ltd selected HIGmill™ technology for its Kevitsa mine in Northern Finland. The 700 kW mill is grinding copper rougher concentrate to improve copper/nickel separation and copper recovery. Selection of the HIGmill™ followed mineralogy analysis and laboratory and pilot testing for HIG milling in parallel with flotation tests to determine optimum grind size and energy input.The paper discusses the challenges and successes of the test work, manufacture, installation, commissioning and subsequent operation of the mill. Grinding performance is presented and a comparison between predicted and operating energy efficiency is made. Beach sands on the Morobe coast of New Guinea contain significant amounts of chromite. This chromite, together with the more abundant associated minerals such as olivine, enstatite, tremolite, antigorite and feldspar has been de- rived from rocks of the Papuan Ultramafic Belt and transported to the beaches by three rivers, the Paiawa, the Saia and the Sesimbai. Of the hundreds of samples taken, 26 have been analysed mineralogically and chemically in some detail. On this basis, five groups of samples, four on- shore and one offshore, representing character- istic mineral assemblages, have been recognized. The chromite grains themselves have been exam- ined to determine variations in amount and in the Cr/Fe ratio, since this is of economic importance. Much of the chromite fails to reach a high Cr/Fe ratio as a result of magnetite rims around chromite grains. The precious metal content of the sands is negligible.

For more than 15 years after the Northparkes orebodies were first discovered in 1976, the project was delayed by the need to find an economic way of mining the low-grade E26 deposit. The decision to use a low-cost block caving method to mine the orebody was made in the early-1990s; but the project's future did not solidify until 1993 when a radical new approach was adopted which sought to integrate business imperatives with technology and organisation strategies. The approach led to the establishment of a strategic vision which tied together all the components that could have a major impact on the project, to provide a framework for guiding strategic choices. The strategic vision strived to break away from the old rules of how mines are organised and operated; and involved finding imaginative new ways to radically redesign mining processes to achieve quantum leaps in performance.

Trueman: I am not aware of any definite evidence of the temperature of formation of these minerals, but am of the opinion that high temperatures would not be present during crystallization.No evidence from the qUl'trtz, magnetite and hematite of formation temperatures is indicated and, as the carbonate is later than the other minerals it does not supply any data either.According to Miyashiro and other workers who have studied the composition and stability of the glaucophaneriebeckite series, minerals of riebeckite composition are stable over a wide range of P, T conditions. Recent work by W. G. Ernst, of the University of California, indicate that, in the presence of an Fe203/Fe304 buffer, riebeckite and crocidolite are more likely to form at low temperatures. The occurrence of riebeckite-crocidolite as authigenic minerals has been reported from several localities.Dr. MacLeod (Geol. Surv. of W. A.): Recent regional mapping by the Geological Survey of Western Australia has revealed a total thickness of at least 30,000 ft for the Proterozoic sediments in the Hamersley Basin. In this succession the asbestos-bearing beds of the Brockman Iron Formation at Wittenoom are overlain by some 20,000 ft of younger sediments and volcanics. When conducting gold leach tests on free milling gold ores which method is the best, bottle rolls or the stirred beaker test? Recently, a client requested that gold leach tests be conducted using the stirred beaker methodology. When asked why, because the laboratory was set up to conduct tests using the bottle rolls technique the reply was that the stirred beaker leach test would replicate the plant more closely. Not wishing to upset the client, the instructions were followed. However, the opportunity was taken to complete additional tests so that the two leach procedures could be compared. Further, this comparison was completed on two different gold ores as well as a number of different grinding media types.This paper provides a description of the two laboratory techniques employed, and presents the results of these parallel tests. Interestingly, the assertion that the stirred beaker methodology more closely replicated plant performance was not validated. In fact, the results obtained using this procedure were noticeably different from those observed in the plant, with lower recoveries and significantly higher cyanide consumptions. The bottle rolls test however more adequately replicated plant performance in terms of recovery and cyanide consumption. The placement of chemically reactive mine wastes in mined out pits (æpit backfillingÆ) is increasingly seen by industry as best practice to manage long-term environmental risks. This is primarily because leaving wastes at the surface, or allowing pit lakes to develop, can result in unacceptable environmental risks. The costs and practicality of mitigation options such as installation of covers and community expectations of landform re-construction to achieve a post-mining, beneficial land use are also important drivers for pit backfilling.Pit backfilling can significantly reduce the post-closure risks to receiving environments, by minimising seepage due to tailings, acid/solute generating waste rock and/or salts derived from mine water treatment. Environmental risks are often highest where wastes are located close to the ground surface, due to relatively high rates of groundwater movement in near-surface aquifers and/or failure of engineered structures due to rainfall/erosion processes. Placement of these wastes at significant depth in pits, subject to mine planning and environmental assessment, can address these risks by increasing the path length and resistance from contaminant source to receptor, thus enhancing encapsulation of the wastes.Pit backfilling can also be cost-effective for mining companies. This is because existing pits are developed on the basis of an economic return and thus provide an opportunity to store tailings in an existing æengineered structureÆ at little or no incremental cost when compared with building and operating a new tailings or waste rock storage facility, often encompassing complex cover/drainage management systems. Key issues for consideration are mine planning, the long-term geotechnical behaviour of the wastes (eg consolidation of tailings which leads to release of acid/solutes in tailings porewaters), seepage rates to downstream receptors/agreed end point criteria and potential resource sterilisation. Internationally, mine closure guidelines are also showing a greater recognition of pit backfilling in the context of allowing mining companies to meet agreed post-closure land use objectives.In summary, pit backfilling can enhance the encapsulation of chemically reactive mine wastes and environment protection, and with agreement on post-closure beneficial land use, can also help to deliver post-closure benefits to communities.CITATION:Puhalovich, A A, 2012. Development and Validation of Ore Characterisation Test and its Use in Variability Campaigns of Comminution Circuits Impact testing was developed by assessing the fragmentation characteristics of ore samples after controlled impact. Standard methods are, however, limited to relatively large and coarse samples, which thus precludes their use in early stages of projects, as well as where only drill cores are available. The method described in this paper is based on the same concepts of controlled ore breakage, but using relatively smaller samples. It is particularly useful in assessing the variability of ore characteristics in early stages of greenfield projects, as well as in predicting the performance of existing grinding circuits. A validation program was carried out in which a good adherence to the original test results was obtained. The results were used for (a) simulation of a copper comminution circuit as a function of the ore characteristics, and (b) evaluation of sampling protocols used for assessing fragmentation characteristics.

A quantitative chemical model of the rocks of the Broken Hill lode environment is presented to illustrate a stratiform orebody in a meaningful form to scientists interested in environmental control on the chemicalcomposition of sediments.Even though this study was restricted by the narrow range of rock analyses available it is obvious that significant chemical differences exist between the various rock units and also that some association of metallic sulphides with Ca, Mn, Fe, and P is indicated.Correlation of this evidence with that from other mining fields may point out more definite chemical relationships and elucidate the puzzle of the mode of formation of many stratiform orebodies.

In the plumbing of vertical shafts the methods employed and equipment used, are generally made to best suit existing conditions. Undoubtedly, there is no method that can be called standard or that can be used with equal ease and success on all shafts. At the Mount Isa Mines Limited property in Northern Queensland, Australia, local conditions have presented no major difficulties to be overcome in shaft plumbing work. In fact, compared to those at many shafts, the problem has been rather simple. There are three vertical shafts connecting main mine workings, with the greatest plumbing depth for any single lift, 350 ft.Other conditions pertaining to plumbing work have been generally normal.The method we have employed is, in principle, similar to the Weisbach orientation method with a variation that does not necessitate damping of the wires to bring them to rest. Although conditions encountered have not been such that damping the wires would have been inconvenient, we feel we have saved much time and eliminated unnecessary...

The Australian Gas Light. Company was established in 1837, the first gas being sent out from the Kent Street Works, then the headquarters, in 1841. Mortlake Works were opened in 1886, and has since grown to the vast undertaking inspected by members of the Institute.The Kent Street Works were closed in 1921.
