For handling rough rock, the shovel-train system is unexcelled. The ideal application is a physically large, but not excessively deep, open-pit mine from which the coarsely blasted ore and waste must be transported distances in excess of three miles. If, in addition, a high production rate is to be maintained, railroad haulage will probably afford a lower cost per ton transportation than will any other haulage method. Relatively gentle grades must be employed- usually 3% for uphill hauls and 4% for downhill hauls. The greater the differences in elevation the greater are the railroad track grade space requirements. By way of illustration, a 3% ramp out of a pit only 300 ft deep must be almost two miles long. Mainline track locations should be selected carefully so that the frequency of movements during the life of the mining operation is minimized. This applies both to ore and to waste haulageways. Such moves are not only expensive but difficult to execute without adversely affecting production rates. The large mine affords greater opportunities for judicious location of semi-permanent trackage.

A Nere record of Emmons's professional career would very inadequately represent the man. That he was eminent mc know, and our successors will realize in due time; but they must depend upon us for knowledge of a singularly ~vholesome, modest, unselfish personality, and of a character that did honor to a profession in which trustworthiness is indispensable. Those members of the Institute who met Emmons are his friends, and I never knew .one of these who was not the better for that friendship. Emmons was born in Boston, Mar. 29, 1841, the son of Xathaniel H. and Elizabeth (Wales) Emmons, and was named Samuel Frankliri after an ancestor who was of the sarne family as Benjamin Franklin. He took the degrcc of Bachelor of Arts at Harvard in 1861, and soon afterwards went abroad to complete his education. From 1862 to 1864 he attended the courses at the fieole Impkriale des Mines at Paris, Elie de Beaumont arid Daubrke being among his professors. The year 1864-1865 he spent at Freiberg under Cotta and other famous teachers; after which he spent another year in traveling through Europe. Like many other renowned geologists, he approached his ultimate profession from its economic side, and was thus from the first imbued with a sense of high responsibility in the promulgation of scientific opinions or conclusions. With hypotheses which were interesting merely because they were ingenious or even plausible, he would have nothing to do. In 1867 he joined the Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel at its organization under Clarence King, serving at first as a volunteer, but soon receiving a regular appointment. This expedition was the first one of purely geological character sent out by the United States government. WHEN operations were first started at Climax in 1917 by the Climax Molybdenum Co., they were pioneering in the molybdenum industry for little was known relative to the uses of molybdenum or the metallurgy of molybdenite concentration. Concentration of molybdenite is relatively simple today but in 1916, when the Climax deposit first attracted attention, it presented serious difficulties. Little was known, in fact, even about the assaying of such low-grade molybdenum ores. Mine samples were sent to at least a dozen of the best laboratories in the United States and average values reported varied from 0.4 per cent to 1.0 per cent MOS2. Owing to the wide variations in MoS2 content obtained from reliable chemists, the actual value of the ore was most uncertain. This variation occurred repeat¬edly over a period of six months in 1917. It was finally decided, as a last resort, to cut several tons of sample from the tunnel and have a mill test made, using the recovered MoS2 per ton as the grade of the ore, for a small error in the assaying of the concentrate would not materially affect the results. These mill tests were made by the General Engineering Co. (Callow) at Salt Lake City. The results proved an ore of commercial grade and indicated the flotation process for the best metallurgy. The rich deposits of magnetic iron-ore in the Highlands of northern New Jersey attracted the attention of iron-workers at the time of the earliest settlements in that region. The outcrops of the oreshoots at the Dickerson mine, at Mount Hope, and at Hibernia, in Morris county, and at Ringwood, in Passaic count,y, which were doubtless such as would lead to discovery, location and development of nearly all the large iron-mines in that part of the State, appear to have had their beginnings where the ore cropped out on the surface or where it was scarcely concealed by a thin mantle of earth. Analysis and example applications have been performed to compare the accuracy and computing speed of alternating-direction explicit and implicit procedures (ADEP and ADIP) in numerical solution of reservoir fluid flow problems. ADIP yields significantly greater accuracy and requires about 60 per cent more computing time than ADEP, not 300 or 500 per cent more as reported elsewhere. l,2 INTRODUCTION Several recent papers 1-3 discuss an alternating-direction explicit difference approximation (ADEP) to the diffusion equation. Example applications of ADEP and ADIP4 were reported to support conclusions that ADEP is comparable in accuracy to ADIP and requires one-fifth to one-third the computing time of ADIP. Applications of ADEP in calculation of two-phase flow in reservoirs was also proposed. 3 This study was performed to compare further the relative merits of ADEP and ADIP in simulation of two-dimensional flow of one and two fluid phases in reservoirs. Since two-phase flow equations are often essentially elliptic rather than parabolic, the efficiency of ADEP in solving the elliptic equation was also examined.

This paper .reviews some of the key developments which have been made in the synthesis of the III-V compound semiconductors and the associated progress in obtaining high-quality material for device development. The history of the investigation of the semi-conducting properties of these materials has indicated the need for synthesis techniques capable of producing rnaterial of high chemical purity and physical perfection. The progress in the area is described, and the present status of quality of several compounds is discussed. In addition, recent studies of localized epitaxial deposition of GaAs into semi-insulating GaAs substvates for the development of arrays of devices ave reviewed. In conclusion, some important areas for future research and developrnent are discussed. INTEREST in III-V compounds as semiconductors dates back to the period 1950 to 1952, when Goryunova, Ioffe, and, in particular, Welker determined that 111-V compounds were structural analogs of the group IV elements carbon, silicon, germanium, and tin and that they were also semiconductors.'-3 Since that time interest in the properties of these materials has ex- panded rapidly. During 1953 and 1954, the first reports of rectification, photoconductivity, and optical absorption in these materials came from several investigators. In 1955, recombination radiation from samples of GaAs, InP, and GaSb was reported by ~raunstein .' This radiation was produced by injected minority carriers from point and large-area contacts. From 1955 to 1960, efforts increased on preparing large, pure specimens of these materials for the study of basic physical phenomena and device exploration. By 1960, materials preparation and the understanding of the physics of some of the materials had advanced to where some very interesting and potentially useful phenomena came under study. The first observation of electric-field-induced changes in the optical absorption edge (Franz -Keldysh effect) of 111-V compounds was reported for GaAs by Moss in 1961.' In 1962 the study of recombination radiation advanced rapidly. Keyes and Quist6 and Pankove and Berkey-heiser7 reported high radiative efficientices obtained from recombination, and then the first injection electroluminescent lasers in GaAs were announced by Hall ef al.,' by Nathan et al.,O and by Quist ef al.,'O and in Ga(As, P) alloys by Holonyak and Bevacqua." (Wilkes-Barre Meeting, June, 1911.) AT a number of mines in eastern Nicaragua, 3.5- and 5-ft. Huntington mills are used for grinding gold-ore after a preliminary breaking in jaw-crushers. The smaller mills are made sectional to facilitate transportation to the more difficultly accessible mines. The capacity of the smaller mills is about 20 or 25 per cent. that of the larger, but in proportion to the quantity of ore ground they require more power and are subject to greater wear. The notes herein given are from records of the performance of the larger mills, but, in general, apply to the smaller also. THE NATURE OF THE ORE. The ore occurred as a series of flat veins in a highly-decomposed rock, probably alaskite. The primary mineralization comprised pyrite, pyrrhotite, marcasite, chalcopyrite, and quartz; the oxidation-products of which were chiefly hydrated iron oxide or limonite, chrysocolla, azurite, and malachite. The kaolinization of the feldspar of the country resulted in the admixture of a great quantity of clay with the oxidized ore. The quartz was sandy, imbedded in the clay; and probably the greater part represented the residue from the crushed rock in the fissures after leaching, and kaolinization of the feldspar. There was little vein-quartz in the unaltered primary sulphide ore. Only the oxidized ore was mined for the gold that it contained in amounts that averaged $4 per ton. No specks of gold were ever seen in the ore, and the gold obtained by panning was always exceedingly fine. The amalgamation-bullion was about 800 fine in gold and 60 to 80 in silver. The ore delivered at the mill contained from 5 to 15 per cent. of moisture; during the rainy season the quantity was much greater. The structural stability of any mine or under- ground opening in rock is dependent on the stress field, that is, the state of stress in rock before mining, the stress distribution in the rock created by the opening, and the in situ strength of the rock. In the past mine design problems have been considered by assuming that the stress field is due only to the weight of the overlying rock, the stress around the opening can be calculated from elastic theory using laboratory-determined elastic constants, and the in situ strength of the rock can be determined from laboratory tests on small specimens. Solutions to hypothetical problems using this procedure are given in a report by Obert, Duvall, and Merrill.' Because of the uncertainties of these assumptions, this method can give only a rough approximation to the solution of actual structural problems. Obviously, this approach to determining the stability of underground openings would be greatly improved if the rock stress could be measured in situ, and it is undoubtedly for this reason that in recent years many investigators have spent considerable effort on the development of procedures for measuring rock stress. In this report a method is described for determining in situ the absolute stress in rock. The method requires the measurement of the deformation of a borehole before and after the rock is stress-relieved. The magnitude and direction of the applied stresses are calculated from the borehole deformation and modulus of elasticity of the rock. Also, the results of absolute stress determination made in the walls and pillars of underground openings in five rock types are presented. From these results a number of conclusions are drawn regarding the accuracy and limitations of this method and the problem of stress measurements in general.

This paper reports on the results of a fundamental investigation of the behavior of rock under impact of a chisel-shaped bit. Drop-tester studies were conducted with strain gauges attached to the rock and striking bit-edge. It was established that rock behaves viscoelastically. Little correlation was found to exist between the strain waveforms detected on the rock surface and in the bit; thus, strain-time curves obtained with transducers mounted on the bit cannot be used to explain the sequence of events in rock breakage. It is estimated that nearly 1 per cent of the total energy of the blow is expended in permanent deformation of the rock. The strain- energy distribution on a rock surface as a result of chisel impact, which follows a simple law, is presented graphically. Experiments also were conducted with gauges embedded in the rock vertically below the line of impact and at an angle of approximately 45' to the vertical. No essential difference was observed in the type of wave obtained with embedded gauges and with gauges on the surface, as may have been anticipated from theory. INTRODUCTION Through the ages great strides have been taken towards improvement of the various techniques applied in the breakage of rock. Indeed, numerous applications of the rock-failure process are an integral part of present-day industry, including oil well drilling. Yet, astonishingly, little is known regarding the behavior of rock under dynamic loading or the mechanism of rock failure. The value of impact loading studies from the point of view of drilling is evident, however, and requires little elaboration because impact of a chisel edge on rock forms the basic action constituting most common methods of drilling. RELATED STUDIES Impact studies of communition and fragmentation conducted by Fahrenwald, et a1,8 Poncelet,l7 Axelson, et a1,2 Piret,16 Hartman and pfleider,ll Charles and deBruyn,5 and others have been of considerable help in understanding rock-breakage phenomena. Further insight into the basic action of drilling and penetration has been obtained by the work of Irving,13 Cherkasov and Shlyapin,6 BOrcherdt,3 Shepherd,19 Shreiner and Pavlova,20 Drilling Research Inc.7 Hartman,10 Appl and Gatley1 and several other investigators. However, knowledge concerning the stresses and strains induced in the rock and bit during impact remains scant. Recent photoelastic studies by Tandanand and Hartman (1961. 1962)22, 23 have shed light on stress distributions and Fracturing produced in plastics by chisel-shaped bits. In the field of transient strain Pulses and their role in rock drilling, the only extensive work has been performed by Drilling Research Inc. (DRI). They attached strain gauges to the shank of a bit and conducted drop-tester studies, using a die-shaped bit to obtain force-time diagrams. Their work led to the conclusion that, for a given rock type, the first peak of force occurs at a fixed level regardless of the total energy in the system, provided it exceeds a certain minimum threshold level. Further, on this basis an explanation was offered for the sequence of events in crater formation as the result of a single blow on rock. PURPOSE OF PRESENT STUDY The investigations reported in this paper were conducted in a manner similar to the DRI approach, but with the objective of determining the strain distribution in the rock around the area of bit impact and, to a limited extent, the strain in the chisel-shaped bit itself. The creep mechanism and kinetics of fine-grained magnesium have been studied over the temperature range 200&apos; to 600°F. As a result of a photographic study of microstructural changes, transient and steady-state creep components have been correlated with slip, subgrain formation, and cyclic deformation at the grain boundaries. THE approach of this research has been the blend of a quantitative study of the creep strain of polycrystalline magnesium as a function of time, stress, and temperature with direct microstructural observations of the operative deformation processes. The validity of the conclusions is dependent on the condition that the microstructural changes seen on the polished surface qualitatively represent those occurring in the bulk of the metal. The work was intended as much to lay a background to a study of highly creep-resistant magnesium alloys as to provide a description of the behavior of the base metal itself. The spectroscopic analysis of the electrolytic magnesium used in this study is as follows: Al, 0.009 pct; Ca, <0.01; Cu, 0.0011; Fe, 0.021; Mn, 0.012; Ni, 0.0004; Pb, 0.0012; Si, <0.001; Sn, <0.001; and Zn, <0.01. The impurity level is approximately that of commercial magnesium alloys. The original ingot was melted under Dow type 310 flux and cast as a 3 in. diam billet. It was extruded into 1 in. flat stock under the conditions: billet preheat 800°F (1 hr), container and die temperature 800°F, speed 3 ft per min, and area reduction ratio 45:1. The extrusion process was chosen in preference to rolling and recrystallization because it allowed easier grain size control from specimen to specimen. The grains of the extruded metal were fairly equi-axial and uniform in the size range of 4 to 6 thousandths of an inch. The preferred orientation of basal planes about the transverse direction was determined by an X-ray diffraction surface reflection method. A beam of filtered copper radiation was directed at an angle of 17" to both the transverse direction and the surface yet perpendicular to the extrusion axis. Analysis of the (002) diffraction arcs in the resulting photographic patterns gave an approximate intensity distribution along the great circle which extends through the center of the basal plane pole figure and to the extrusion axis poles. Successive layers of metal were removed by macro-etching between exposures. The extruded texture is relatively sharp, but the most significant point is the position of the maximum basal plane pole density and its variation with depth below the surface. Fig. 1 shows that this maximum is rotated 15" from the normal at the surface toward the extrusion direction. Such an inclination has been reported for extruded 1 pct Mn and 8 pct A1-0.5 pct Zn alloys.&apos; The inclination decreases until the maximum splits at about 0.025 in. depth into two elements of equal and opposite rotations from the ideal. The double texture persists to as great a depth as was experimentally convenient to examine. It probably continues to the very center of the extrusion. There is no great change in the sharpness of the individual elements of the texture with depth. A plate of metal about 0.015 in. thick at the surface of the extruded stock was produced by etching. A transmission diffraction pattern was made for the purpose of determining any preferred orientation of a direction in the basal planes. Relatively uniform {loo) and {101) rings were produced. There is little tendency for parallelism of a given direction in the plane with the projection of the extrusion axis on it. The creep specimens were machined from 6¼ in. lengths of the extruded stock. Creep was measured on the reduced section, ½x1/8X2¼ in. long. This section was electropolished on one side for the studies of microstructural changes during creep. An orthophosphoric acid-ethyl alcohol electrolyte was used under the conditions recommended by Jacquet.² Hand polishing was used for previous mechanical preparation. Electropolishing was continued until all mechanical twins had been removed. The electro-polished surface was protected from oxidation during creep testing by a thin layer of silicone oil. All micrographs were taken at room temperature on conventional metallographic equipment and after removal of the oil film. The creep tests were performed with machines which have been described in detail by Moore and McDonald." Five testing temperatures, 200°, 300°, 400°, 500°, and 600° ±3°F were used. Difference in temperature between the two ends of the specimen reduced section was 2°F or less. The testing was done at constant load. THE Spanish mine is in Nevada County, California, 21 miles northeast of Nevada City by road, and 3 miles north of the town of Washington. The mill and surface buildings are on Poorman&apos;s Creek at an ele¬vation of 3,000 ft. About 35 men are employed at the property, which is producing 50 tons of ore per day. Electric power, purchased from the Pacific Gas and Electric Co., is brought in from Alleghany, seven miles away. In the early days the mine was operated by F. W. and P. R. Bradley. Between 1883 and 1899 the production was approximately $900,0)0 in gold. The ore treated during; that time yielded an average of 60 cents per ton and was mined and milled at a profit. The surface, oxidized, ore deposit was 30 to 100 ft. wide and was mined by the glory-hole method. The milling-plant at first consisted of a Blake crusher an-1 a small Huntington mill; later three large Huntington mills were added to the plant. In 1893 a new mill was built at a lower adit- It consisted of 10 stamps and four Huntington mills. The gold was secured by amalgamation, the recovery being about 50 per rent.

NUMEROUS brands of virgin pig lead are used in the manufacture of lead and lead-alloy cable sheath for commercial cables. In changing from one brand of pig lead to another a readjustment of press operating conditions is nearly always necessary. This is due largely to different flow characteristics, and some brands extrude at a much lower pressure than others; for example, copper-bearing lead requires much more pressure than a low-bismuth lead under the same operating conditions. With the modern type of lead press the extrusion practice in general differs very little. Molten lead at a temperature of 375° to 400° C. (710° to 750° F.) is cast in a water-cooled cylinder and allowed to cool or solidify into a slug for six to nine minutes. . This slug is forced into the die block and around the core tube through which the cable runs. The die block is held at an optimum temperature by means of gas flames, usually 175° to 225° C. (350° to 4.35° F.). Measurements of the tem¬perature of the cable sheath taken at the time of extrusion have covered a range of 190° to 225° C. (375° to 435° F.). According to Tammann, the rate of extrusion for a metal under constant pressure through a simple orifice is almost doubled for each 10° C. rise in temperature. Because of the irregularity of die-block construction, such a great increase is not obtained in lead-cable extrusion practice. To obtain more" definite information about the effect of small per¬centages of metals usually present as impurities in virgin pig lead, a series of compression tests were made covering several different brands of lead and various alloys. Since the usual temperature of the sheath is approxi¬mately 200.° C. as it emerges from the die block, these compression tests were all performed at 200° C. Five different brands of virgin pig lead were selected, as follows: Brand A: A desilverized western lead of very high purity. This lead contains neither copper nor bismuth. Brand B: A bismuth-free southeastern Missouri lead, usually con¬taining 0.05 to 0.08 per cent copper. Brand C: A copper-free mid-western desilverized lead of very good grade, usually containing around 0.06 to 0.10 per cent bismuth.

The results of stress-corrosion tests upon several non-ferrous sheet metals are presented in this paper. The metals include tough pitch copper, five binary brasses, two leaded brasses, one copper-silicon alloy, two tin bronzes, and two nickel-silver alloys. The tests indicate that for most of these sheet metals, externally applied bending stresses below the yield point (0.01 per cent offset) do not result in stress-corrosion cracking as determined by the A.S.T.M. Tentative Method of Mercurous Nitrate Test for Copper and Copper Alloys (B 154-41T).~ Only in the cases of low brass, high brass and medium leaded brass, all cold-worked 4 B & S numbers hard, was any corrosion cracking observed below the yield strength, and in all cases such failures occurred at stresses above the proportional limit for these materials. However, when some of the same materials which showed no evidence of stress-corrosion cracking at stresses below the yield strength, are stressed beyond the yield point, stress- corrosion cracking is quite apt to occur. Since experience has shown that some of these materials, particularly the brasses, are susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking under service conditions, these tests would indicate that, besides externally applied stress and corrosion, plastic deformation in addition to that resulting from the original cold working of the material is also required to produce conditions conducive to stress- corrosion cracking.

With the greatly expanding use of magnesium during the war, it appeared necessary to the War Metallurgy Committee that the notch sensitivity of magnesium alloy extrusions be further investigated and the influence of various factors upon notch sensitivity be noted. Accordingly, the National Defense Research Committee of the Office of Scientific Research and Development placed a research contract with the University of California, supervised by the War Metallurgy Committee. The work discussed herein was done under "Restricted" Project NRC-21, reported in Dec. 1943~; it has been released for publica-tion by the O.S.R.D. Scope of the Investigation The notch sensitivity of various magnesium alloy extrusions was determined under axial tension, and also under several conditions of nonaxial tension. Hardness, grain size and other metallographic features were observed; stress-strain data were obtained, and the chemical compositions of the alloys were determined, in order to correlate these quantities with thc notch sensitivity. Notch sensitivity under axial tensile load was determined for a few specimens which had been cold worked to various degrees by tensile prestraining. Magnesium alloy extrusions studied included Dowmetal 0, X, J, and A(. For comparison, extrusions of aluminum alloy 24s-T, cast bars of aluminum alloy 122-T2, and cast bars of magnesium alloy C were also tested. The specified chemical composition of these alloys is given in Table I. All bars tested were within specification limits of composition. Investigation of thc tensile notch sensitivity of various magnesium alloy extrusions, under conditions of axial and eccentric load, showed little or no correlation with stress-strain or other conventional data. Since the many uncontrolled variables present might mask significant relationships, one alloy was selected for intensive study. Magnesium 0 alloy extrusions were subjected to experimental heat treatments, and the ,Changing hardness, tensile strength, microstructure, and notch sensitivity observed. Experimental Techniques and Procedures Tensile Testing Bars used for axial loading were machined with % in.- and with 34-in. minimum diam1 and included specimens with 60" V notches (Fig I and 2). Each V-notched specimen was roughed out carefully and then finished with a honed tool. INTRODUCTION IN a series of papers, the authors and their associates have shown that the technical cohesion limit is affected by the same four factors that affect the flow stress, namely, the stress system, plastic deformation, temperature, and the strain rate.16-28 Moreover, each of these factors affects the technical cohesion limit in the same way that it affects the flow stress.‡ The influence of any one of these factors may be represented by a curve of cohesion limits, although only one point on the curve may represent actual fracture. As the term "fracture stress" has come into use with the same significance as "technical cohesion limit," the authors are here using the shorter term with the understanding that it does not always refer to actual fracture. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the flow of notched and unnotched specimens between yield and fracture. A study has thus been made of the flow and fracture of metals as affected by the stress system, and of the ductility of metals as affected by the stress system throughout plastic deformation. Since two of the principal stresses were equal (S2 = S3), the stress systems can be represented in terms of the radial stress ratio, the ratio of the transverse radial stress S3 to the longitudinal stress Sl.* The results of the experiments are represented by a series of complete flow-stress curves for each of the metals investigated, and these diagrams have been used for the development of other diagrams of various types. Ludwik was the first to suggest that fracture occurs when the flow stress becomes equal to a technical cohesion limit. Although Ludwik was incorrect in his view that the technical cohesion limit depends only on the amount of plastic deformation and not on the stress system, he was correct in his view that the flow-stress curve for any stress system terminates at a point representing a technical cohesion limit. The authors have seen some recent references to assertions by other investigators that a point representing the fracture stress need not be on the flow-stress curve. The Ludwik principle, however, would seem to be axiomatic, provided that the flow stress and fracture stress are properly defined and that the fracture stress is properly determined. Disregard of this principle has led to some untenable theories of criteria for fracture. When a metal is very ductile, the conventional method of determining the ductility and fracture stress by dividing the breaking load by the sectional area after fracture, generally gives values that are much too high. The mechanism of materials transport was studied in a model experiment in which a silver sphere was sintered to a silver plate under an applied external stress near 800° C. For this purpose the rate of growth of the neck between the sphere and the plate which is proportional to the strain rate of the creep process involved in a neck growth was determined by measuring the change in electrical resistance of the away. This rate of neck growth will depend upon the magnitude of the applied external stress. By measuring the rate just before and just after a change in the external load and therefore the applied stress, the relationship between strain rate and stress can be derived. For material transport by slip in a pure metal it is expected that the strain rate should be proportional to the 4.5th power of the stress, while for transport by diffusional flow the strain rate should be proportional to the first power of the stress. It was found that for stresses above 5 X 10&apos; dynes per sq cm (70 psi) the exponent in the stvain rate-stress relationship was near 4.5 while for a stress of 0.7 x 108 dynes per sq cm (10 psi) an exponent of 1.8 was determined indicating that under the conditions of the experiment the transport mechanism for creep in silver shifts from diffusional flow to slip in the region of 0.7 x 106 dynes per sq cm (10 psi). The importance of these findings for an understanding of the mechanism of material transport in conventional sintering (without an external load) is pointed out. In a paper by Early et al.,&apos; the mechanism of material transport during sintering was treated as a creep process. It was pointed out that two possible types of creep processes could operate during sintering. In one of these material transport takes place by vacancy diffusion due to a gradient in chemical potential. The vacancy sinks in this diffusion process may be either grain boundaries, as in Herring-Nabarro microcreep, or regions beneath a surface of small radius of curvature. The diffusive transport may be by volume, grain boundary, or surface diffusion. In the other mechanism, creep takes place by slip, i.e., dislocation motion with its rate generally controlled by dislocation climb. One method of distinguishing between these two modes of materials transport is to investigate the creep rate, i.e., the rate of material transport as a function of stress. For material transport by vacancy diffusion, the creep rate is proportional to the stress.&apos; For creep by slip, controlled by dislocation climb, the creep rate is proportional to a power of the stress. For pure metals this power is 4.5;374 for dispersion-strengthened material a fourth power relationship can be derived.5 This difference in the stress dependence of the strain rate is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1, in which the logarithm of strain rate is plotted vs the logarithm of the stress for material transport in a pure metal by vacancy flux and by dislocation climb. The stress range in which the two types of material transport overlap would be expected to be relatively small. In the experiments described by Early and coworkers compacts pressed from spherical copper powder were sintered isothermally under an applied axial external load in a dilatometer. During sintering the magnitude of the applied external load was changed and the rate of axial shrinkage of the compact before and after the load change determined. In order to find the stress dependence of the strain rate the magnitude of the stress acting on the neck area between the spherical particles before and after the load change had to be calculated. This stress is the resultant of the stresses due both to the externally applied load and to surface tension. The stress due to surface tension is a function of the geometry of the powder compacts. It can be determined, at least for simple geometrical arrays,&apos;76 but it is difficult to obtain exact values of the stresses for actual powder compacts when only average values of particle diameters and of neck diameters between particles are available. The calculation of stress and the strain rate-stress relationship is therefore only very approximate.

The stepped-up pace of US open-pit and surface mining during the 1970&apos;s is a direct response by mining firms and equipment manufacturers to rising costs and declining ore grades. In the race for bigger and more efficient machines, rotary drills have emerged as the foremost leader in primary drilling at major US surface operations. At least 12 different manufacturers now offer rotary rigs in the 102- mm-diam. (4-in.) or greater blasthole size range. With capital investment for the larger units quickly approaching $1 million, the question is asked, "What&apos;s been the performance record to date of rotary drill rigs operating in North America?" To answer that question, a comprehensive study of rotary blasthole drills was conducted which qualitatively reveals various problem areas inherent in the rotary drill market and indicates some new directions for improvement.
