The design of a longwall entry system is discussed in this Bureau of Mines paper. This is done primarily through the results of an in-mine case study made of two sets of longwall entries utilizing the stiff- yield pillar design concept. The rock mechanics instrumentation plan used in this case study is shown, including a description of the instrumentation layout and the types of instruments used. The analysis of the stress changes in the abutment and yield pillars is presented in detail as the longwall panels were mined. Conclusions concerning when the pillar first started to experience significant stress, pillar stress history as the longwall face approached and moved past the pillars, stress distribution within the pillars and relative stress changes between yield and abutment pillars are discussed. The paper concludes with a discussion of the redistribution of stress in the vicinity of the long- wall panel.

The production of lightweight aggregates in Oregon is a new industry, and, like all new enterprises, it is suffering from growing pains characterized by numerous, small operations some of which flourish for a short time and then cease altogether. Norinally all industrial mineral products are produced in a highly competitive atmosphere. At the present time this condition does not exist to a very marked degree in the state because as yet producers have not saturated the constantly expanding market. This paper has been prepared with the intention of outlining very briefly the current status of the various products now heing used as lightweight aggregates in Oregon. The present piche will surely change, perhaps quite radically within even a short space of time. Lightweight Aggregates Used in the Northwest PUMICE Interest in Oregon pumice is not new. Deposits are abundant. Successful development, however, dates only from 1946. During 1948 a total of nine operations was engaged in full or part-time production of aggregate. The postwar building boom and increased public consciousness regarding the value of insulation are the immediate reasons behind the current development. Just how firmly this production of pumice aggregate may be established is something which cannot be foretold at the present time. Much will depend upon how successfully the pumice aggregate construction already installed stands the test of time. Some fine pumice aggregate products have been made and it seems probable that because of its unique properties a certain demand for pumice aggregate will continue in the future. Fire-proof, rodent-proof, decay-resistant properties supplement the lightness in weight and insulation properties of pumice aggregate products in rendering them particularly ideal for many types of construction. In addition there has been fabrication in the form of reinforced fence posts, street markers, and similar products of a specialized-product nature and these are not to be overlooked in terms of future production. Also pertinent to how soundlj pumice aggregate production is established will be possible future competition with other lightweight aggregates. However, this situation will be governed largely by competitive costs of production and marketing. For its present use, which is almost exclusively limited to the manufacturing of building blocks, the market for Oregon pumice aggregate has been extended from the mining area around Rend and Chemult to points as far distant as San Francisco and Seattle. Naturally enough the bulk of the production goes to the Portland and eastern Oregon consumers. Shipments are made by both rail and truck. Early in 1947 the State Department of Geology and Mineral Industries made a canvass of all pumice producers in the state. The production for 1956 amounted to 26,614 cu yd and was valued at $13,649 at the plants. The United States Bureau of Mines estimates the production for 1947 as 33,240 short tons valued at $111,380. This is roughly 65,000 cu yd. No data are available for the 1948 production but it is understood to exceed that for 1947. The Oregon pumice occurrences originated largely from the eruption of Mount Mazama, the name of the formerly active volcano and the location of Crater Lake. Other lesser volcanoes throughout the area contributed to the present occurrences, however, and it has been estimated by Moore' that the pumice deposits cover an area of some 3500 square miles. This area lies east of Crater Lake between Bend and Klamath Falls and embraces the southern portion of Deschutes County, the northern part of Klamath County, and the northwest corner of Lake County. Thickness of the pumice ranges from thin skims to local thicknesses of as much as 30 to 40 ft. Fragment size also varies greatly. Any attempt to describe the situation by giving screen analyses would be confusing because of the wide variations to be found in all area of this size. The picture can best be summed up by stating that places showing great variations in fragment size can be found if a search for extremes is made. For mining purposes in connection with aggregate production, it call be stated that miles and miles of pumice exist in which the fragrnent sizes range from an inch or so downward. The usual color of the pumice is a light gray to off-white. A typical pumice analysis shows a silica content of about 69 pct, alumina 15 pct, and sodium oxide about 5 pct. Potash, lime, and water are the next three most abundant constituents, running just a little over 2 pct each. Iron oxides are fairly constant at 2.75 pct. Titanium, manganese, magnesium, and phosphorus occur in amounts of less than 1 pct. All of the foregoing substances are combined as a glass exhibiting cellular structure. The weight of crushed but otherwise pit-run (undried) pumice runs around 1100 Ib per cu yd according to figures furnished by various producers. Introduction. OF the treatment of the slime-pulp of gold- and silver-ores by cyanidation, agitation is an essential part. When prepared for treatment, this pulp, consisting of ore reduced to such fineness that approximately 80 per cent. of it will pass through a 200-mesh screen, is mixed with a certain proportion of water, carrying in solution the quantity of cyanide (KCN) and other chemicals required. The water-constituent of the pulp thus prepared usually ranges from 1 to 2 parts by weight to 1 of the dry ore. Thus constituted', the pulp is charged into treatment-tanks, the shape and capacity of which vary, according to the quantity of pulp to be treated daily and the method of agitation to be employed. Tanks have no other function in a cyanide-plant than that of being economical and convenient containers or receptacles for holding the pulp, solution, or water used in the operations. It is by agitation that the solids in the pulp charged into the tanks are kept in suspension in, and mixed with, the solution in the proper proportions required for the treatment. If the proper mixture of solution to solids be determined to be 2 to 1 by weight (which is, approximately, 5 to 1 by volume), this proportion should be maintained in every part of the charge ; -that is, each solid particle of the pulp, whether it be of 180- or 400-mesh size, should, be surrounded by five times its own volume of solution throughout the whole period of treatment. The reason is, that the amount of chemicals ascertained to be necessary for dissolving the gold and silver contained in the solids, is held in uniform solution in the water-constituent of the pulp, and, therefore, the determined proportions of solution and solids must be maintained at all times during treat-

INFORMATION is available on the effect of stress on permeability, coercive force, and hysteresis for a variety of materials' but for the technically important grain-oriented 3 pct Si-Fe' the stress effects are not adequately covered in the literature; in addition, most of the stress data do not permit estimation of what would happen to the 60 cycle watt losses of the material under stress. Direct measurement of these effects therefore has been made and appears to be of considerable theoretical as well as practical interest. Losses were measured on the central 25 cm portion of 40~3~0.035 cm samples which could be stressed in a small tensile machine built for this purpose. Under tension the following effects, illustrated in the figures by a particular example, were observed: 1—"Unstrained" material of commercially acceptable loss level shows no change or a small increase in loss at low elastic stresses. For the sample shown in the figures, this is illustrated during the initial run, where a 7 pct increase is observed (Fig. 1). 2—There is no additional change in loss when the sample is further strained up to the elastic limit (Fig. 1). Within that limit the loss-stress curve is reversible. This is not illustrated in Fig. 1. 3—Even in the plastic range only small increases in loss are observed as long as the sample is kept under stress (Fig. 2, point N); often no increase can be observed (Fig. 1). 4—A large increase in watt losses is observed after removal of the stress subsequent to plastic deformation (Figs. 1 and 2). 5—All, or nearly all, of the foregoing increase in loss due to plastic deformation can be eliminated by a reapplication of tensile stress but returns upon removal of this stress. This is illustrated in the third run (Fig. 3). This run remains within the elastic limit and shows the reversibility of the stress-loss curve under this condition. These findings have been confirmed on large Samples (approximately 200~10~0.035 cm and larger) except that under 1 no initial increase in loss was ever observed on these. The accuracy of the watt loss measurements is of the order of 1 pct. Neither bending of the sample in the tensioning device nor a redistribution of flux along the width of the sample accounts for these results. They therefore must be explained on the basis of either a change in the domain configuration due to stress or a change in the domain wall mobility. Acknowledgment The assistance of Mr. Robert L. T HE Mysore iron works, at Bhadravati, about 2000 ft. above sea level in the Shimoga district of Mysore, British India, is served by a meter gage branch line of the Mysore State Railways. The works which were designed and erected by Perin & Marshall, who still act as consulting engineers, are surrounded by a thickly wooded country which sup- plies about 400 tons per day of wood for fuel. The ore deposits lie 20 miles to the south, and limestone quarries are close by the works. The Bhadra river sup- plies the works and the town with the necessary quantity of water. Introduction This surprisingly little-known group of minerals, the nonmetallics, so-called for their lack of metallic luster, is the largest group of the mineral kingdom, and cinstitutes perhaps 75 percent of all mineral species. For the most part, these minerals are compounds of the common acids, oxides, hydroxides, and two elements, carbon and sulfur. The list of the non- metallic minerals, therefore, is very long. It includes the borates, carbonates, chlorides, fluorides, nitrates, phosphates, silicates, sulfates, and less commonly, arsenates, chromates, molybdates, suliides, tungstates, and vanadates, the latter groups, and many of the oxides, being sought principally for their metal content. Those nonmetallics used commercially are generally called the industrial minerals, although in addition this term also includes a considerable group of rocks. The list of industrial minerals and rocks is continually growing as new uses are found, and it now numbers over 300 commodities. The industrial minerals industry has developed since about 1920. There- fore, the development has been fast, and it has been more or less parallel with the development of the art of minerals beneficiation. General Discussion of the Group This group is so heterogeneous that it has defied logical, or widely accepted, classification, whether by origin, composition, or end use, and perhaps for this reason the industrial minerals generally have received short shrift in both teaching and research. Except for those involved with asbestos, cement, fertilizers, gypsum, salt, sand and gravel, few large companies have deigned to enter the field, and consequently most industrial minerals have been developed for the most part by the small operators or entrepreneurs. Yet surprisingly, except for one war year, the nonmetallics have always surpassed the metals in value and tonnage (Fig. 1). One main characteristic that most of the nonmetallics have in common is direct sensitivity to labor and transportation. In other words they are characterized by large bulk and low-unit value, and hence have what might be termed a "place value".

The steady-state creep behaviov of zirconium and zivcaloy-2 was examined in the temperature vatlge 520° to 620°C A1 low stresses the creep rates were cimracterized by a linear stress dependence; at highev stresses the stress dependence was much more pronounced. Temnperature-cycling tests yielded values for the aclivation enevgy for creep. Various tlzeories were examined in the ligltt of- the experimental re-sults and it mas concluded that the low-stress creep behavior is the result of the stress-direcled diffusion of vacancies along gain boundaries. It has been observed,"&apos; usually under conditions of high temperature and low stress, that creep deformation can occur for which the steady-state creep rate is linearly dependent on the applied stress. For magnesium and certain magnesium alloys, Harris and ones&apos; and ones&apos; have argued that this type of creep occurs by mass transfer as a result of the stress-induced generation and migration of vacancies, along a gradient defined by the stress direction. Jones&apos; demonstrated that the rate-controlling diffusion path is sensitive to grain size and temperature, and that by suitable control of these variables creep could occur by vacancy diffusion either predominately along grain boundaries or through the lattice. Recently, Jones3 suggested from an examination of limited high-stress data for zircaloy-2, composition in Table I, that significant diffusion creep could occur at low stresses, at least between 375" and 500°C, controlled by grain boundary vacancy diffusion. This process could have an important implication in assessing the role of zirconium alloys as a structural or cladding material in certain classes of nuclear reactors, since it predicts creep deformation far in excess of any estimates based on extrapolating slip creep data from higher stress levels. If the diffusion creep process occurs it should be possible to describe the total steady-state creep rate of zirconium and its alloys as the sum of two terms, Eq. [I]; the first term relates to a slip creep process important at high stresses and which is manifested by a much more pronounced dependence of creep rate on stress4 than diffusion creep and the second to a process controlled by mass transfer,5&apos;6 dominant at low stresses: where A and BI are parameters which can depend on structure, Ql and Q2 are the activation energies for the particular creep process occurring, and n describes the sensitivity of the creep rate on stress. It is the purpose of this paper to present some direct experimental evidence in support of this view. It is recognized that other analytical approaches have been proposed to explain data of this kind and these will also be discussed. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Flat creep specimens (gage length 1 by 0.25 by 0.02 in. approx) were prepared from cold-rolled, argon-remelted, crystal bar zirconium and cold-rolled commercial-grade zircaloy-2, the analyses of which are given in Table I. The specimens were annealed at a pressure of < 10-5 Torr at temperatures from 625" to 675°C for 2 hr and slow-cooled. This treatment produced stable grains of average size (defined here by the average linear intercept) of for zirconium and -4xin. (-10 p) for zircaloy-2. The specimens were tested in a dead load tensile creep rig. The stress was maintained constant by adjusting the applied load after approximately each 1 pct of strain. The specimen temperature was controlled to better than +1°C. This system had a small thermal lag, so that rapid temperature changes were possible. Empirical relationships between fracture stress, orientation angle, and diameter of crystal have been determined at 77°K. Orientation ranges of markedly different behavior were found—a law of constant normal stress&apos; of value a (diameter)-1/2 for the fracture of ductile crystals, and a condition of shear stress (or strain) for more brittle crystals. The observations are not consistent with current theories. An interpretation is advanced which is also applicable to observations on the effect of prestrain at room temperature on the subsequent fracture stress at 77°K and to the effect of cyclic stressing on the cleavage strength.&apos;&apos; The law of constunt normal stress&apos; and the brittle ductile transition are also explained. The interpretation is more consistent with the initiation of cracks by intersecting dislocations than with theories based on stress -concentration by dislocation arrays. ZINC single crystals are particularly suited to the study of cleavage because fracture occurs on the basal plane over a wide range of crystal orientations. Analysis of the conditions of stress and strain at fracture in crystals of different orientations should indicate which parameters control the cleavage process. Unfortunately, controversy has arisen over the correct empirical relationship between tensile fracture stress and orientation. Schmid&apos;s observations1,2 favored a &apos;law of constant normal stress&apos;, as observed in other materials.2 For zinc, however, the observed values are far below the theoretical strength and cannot represent the true limit of cohesion between neighboring atomic planes. Hence, the interpretation of such a &apos;law&apos; is not straightforward. Deruyttere and Greenough3,4 found a complex variation between tensile fracture stress and orientation; this variation did not agree with a &apos;law of constant normal stress&apos;. Two theories have been advanced to account for their observations: a) the propagation of cracks from low-angle boundaries,5 and b) the release of energy from piled-up dislocations during crack-propagation.4 The present work resolves the apparent discrepancy between the observations and shows that neither of the above theories are applicable to the tensile fracture of zinc single crystals. A phenomenological explanation, along the lines suggested by Gilman,&apos; is advanced and successfully applied to previously unexplained effects. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS &apos;Crown Special&apos; redistilled zinc was used, except for one comparison series op tests using &apos;Tadanac&apos; electrolytic zinc. Crystals of 1 mm diam, subsequently called &apos;1 mm crystals&apos;, were grown from the melt in vacuo in precision-bore Pyrex tubes internally coated with graphite. Several specimens 1 in. long were cut from each crystal and chemically polished. Jigs were used to minimize handling strains, and crystals were mounted in the Polanyi machine the day prior to testing to allow recovery from any such strains. One-mm crystals were chemically polished for long periods to obtain 0.1 mm (approx) crystals. One-mm crystals were cemented into miniature gimbals by &apos;Araldite&apos; casting resin. The Appendix gives the reasons for using gimbals and the results obtained by other methods. More complete details of all techniques are given elsewhere.7 The symbols and terminology used are as follows: X = orientation angle (angle between tensile axis and line of greatest slope in the basal plane). T = tensile stress (on true cross-section) S,N = shear and normal stress (components of T with respect to the basal plane) ? = shear strain D = crystal diameter. The subscript &apos;f&apos; will be used to denote values at fracture. PART I-ANNEALED CRYSTALS EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATIONS One-mm crystals were used to establish the variation of fracture stress at 77°K with orientation at fracture (Xf), Fig. 1. For 18 deg = Xf = 55 deg, a &apos;law of constant normal stress&apos; was observed. For Xf > 55 deg, the fracture condition approximated to a constant shear stress. At Xf< 18 deg, twinning occurred before fracture so that the results were not typical of homogeneous single crystals,4,8— such specimens will not be considered herein. The dependences of fracture stress upon Xf were of similar type for 6 mm,* 1 mm, and 0.1 mm crystals,

FOR years the expression "except rubber, tin, and manganese" has appeared in practically every discussion of the natural resources of the United States. Knowledge that natural rubber is not produced in the United States has now spread from the relatively few who have reason to be interested in the country&apos;s basic raw material supplies to all those who ride in automobiles, which means everybody. This "everybody" reads in the daily papers that we have a stock pile of natural rubber and that plenty of synthetic rubber is just around the corner. Statistics as to the United States&apos; rubber requirements and sources of supply are of interest to him only to arrive at an answer to the question : "After taking care of rubber requirements for military purposes, will there be rubber for my automobile and the many other rubber articles I want?" More than 30,000 different rubber articles are manufactured in addition to the tires and tubes which use up about 70 per cent of the rubber supply.

AS applied to coal, the term processing is subject to many interpretations. To some it means preparation of coal for the market by mechanical means such as crushing, sizing, washing, or treating with oil or chemicals to eliminate dust or improve combustion quality. To others it means conversion of the coal to other commodities as in carbonization to produce coke and by- products, or to liquids by application of the hydrogenation process. I prefer to classify the various forms of mechanical treatment under the heading of beneficiation and apply the term processing to those methods of treatment that destroy the coal sub- stance through distillation or hydrogenation.

FOR the first time other than on occasion of war the people of the United States are experiencing full-scale participation in world affairs. Public concern has seldom been so involved with conditions and events beyond our own continental limits. Our interest is not wholly of recent origin. Over the years the activity of the United States as a world power and an important trading nation brought about the widening of our political interests and the progressive interrelation of our economy with that of the rest of the world. Some may see in our present phase of world-wide activity the natural consequence of our continued growth. Such observers must also be aware that within recent years our importance in world affairs has been considerably increased. For within the space of an extremely short period events have occurred that have literally jet-propelled the United States into the role of a leading participant in the conduct of world affairs. Little of the choice of this role was left to us. The decline of power in western Europe, the ascendancy between the Elbe and the Pacific shore of an obviously antagonistic force, our earnest endeavor to secure international control of atomic energy, the necessity of providing relief and rehabilitation to war-ravaged areas, and the police work that must be done in occupied territories are problems which have risen in great measure without our help-but they cannot be solved without it.

In many civil or mining engineering works, the stresses and deformations of natural or excavated slopes due to the combined effect of self-weight and initial stresses are of interest. Because of the mathematical complexities of this problem, however, no complete exact solution exists for the simplest case, that of assuming the stress-strain relation of the rock to be perfectly elastic. Efforts have therefore been directed toward numerical and experimental technique. The stresses within an elastic slope have been obtained by LaRochelle,1 using the photoelastic and finite difference method to determine the difference and sum of principal stresses. Subsequently, Finn,2 Hoyaux and Ladanyi,3 and Duncan and Dunlop4 attempted to solve the same problem by using the finite element method. The problem was also investigated by Brown and Goodman5 and Brown and King6 who emphasize the importance of the effect of loading or unloading procedure on the stress distribution within the slope. Although the geometry of the slope and the boundary conditions involved are identical or similar, the results obtained by these various authors by no means agree. It is therefore necessary to review briefly the results of elastic analysis in order to lend credence to the methods used in the solution. Although the stress-strain behavior of some rocks may be reasonably approximated by the elastic modrl, other rocks generally exhibit an elasto-plastic behavior with strain hardening or strain softening as shown in Fig. 1. Experiments show that for most rocks, the stress-strain relationship is approximately linear from the origin to the point P (neglecting the small concave region under low stresses). THE oil-producing industry may logically be &apos;divided into four independent branches: (1) Acquisition of possible productive lands by lease, fee purchase, concession, or otherwise and the perfection of titles thereto. (2) Studies of the geology of the properties, leading to the location of exploratory wells. These involve reconnaissance and detailed surveys and the use of geophysical instruments, where conditions do not permit surface determination. (3) Drilling of exploratory or test holes and, later, exploitation wells. (4) Actual recovery of the oil from the wells by flowing, pumping, or other methods. These four divisions of the industry are unrelated in detail of accomplishment, but they are entirely complementary, one to the other, and must, in any efficient&apos; organization, harmonize in their respective efforts toward the desired ultimate end. The relative order for the first two branches is not necessarily the proper one; in fact one should have knowledge of the favorable possibilities of a given property before it is acquired, and preferably, also, final opinions as to then proper location for an exploratory well, if such is justified in the light of

TAYLOR: I would like to ask Mr. Veasey whether the control of oil in pools includes royalties, and, if so, in case of a new pool how are you going to control, or rather how are you going to describe the limits of that pool?
