It is really an honor and pleasure to be here at the 231d International Conference on Ground Control in Mining. My name is Lew Wade. Until recently I served as the Associate Director of Mining for NIOSH. That's a position that I recently moved out of and that position is now filled by Dr. Jeffery Kohler. I now serve as the Sr. Science Advisor to the NIOSH Director. The topic of my talk today will be coal mine ground control, a look back at the last 30 years, and then a brief look forward. I will start by talking about coal mine ground control statistics and with just a brief look, those statistics clearly show that you people are making a difference and there have been tremendous improvements. I'll then look at reasons for those improvements and those will include people working together (this conference being a prefect example of that), as well as technology development. In the area of technology development, I will give you my top-ten list of technology developments in the area of coal mine ground control. Then I'll end with a look towards the future and point to some possible future developments. Then, I will be so bold as to issue some challenges to the participants of this conference. Again, if you take the broad look back at underground coal mine roof falls and ground fatalities, you see this tremendous improvement that we have all come to appreciate. We have all been a part of improving the safety conditions for our underground miners and the number of fatalities is orders of magnitude less than what it was at the turn of the previous century. We have every reason to be pleased and proud of what we have been able to accomplish. Now, the question is why. What are the reasons for those improvements? Just look around this room. You see evidence of what I think are one of the principle reasons: miners, mine operators, government workers and researchers, equipment suppliers, people in research and academia working together. Coming together and sharing at a Conference like this over the last 23 years.

THE grades of commercial steel produced in large quantities can be divided into two general types from the standpoint of ingot structure-killed and rimmed. Killed steel covers a wide variety with carbon contents throughout the range of the steel portion of the iron-carbon diagram, and is the kind usually used in the production of alloy steels. Rimmed steel is normally associated with carbon ranges under 0.30 per cent, and is not yet used to a large extent in alloy practice, except for copper-bearing steels. The fundamental differences in the ingots made from these two types of steel can be seen most easily in Figs. 1 to 7. In the rimmed ingot shown in Figs. 5 to 7 there are two lines of blowholes approximately parallel to the sides and coming together at the top and at the bottom of the ingot. In the killed ingots shown in Figs. 1 to 4 these blowholes are not present. Also, the rimmed ingot has no well defined pipe, as com-pared to the deep pipe on the killed ingots, and there are numerous pri-mary blowholes in the lower portion of the rimmed ingot perpendicular to the surface and close to it, while on the killed ingot there are no blowholes of this type in the ingot shown in Fig. 1 and very small ones close to the surface in the lower part of the ingot shown in Figs. 2 to 4. With respect to the presence of pipe and the primary blowholes, the structure may vary considerably in both rimmed and killed ingots, therefore these cannot be considered as fundamental structural characteristics differ-entiating the two types of steel. The primary blowholes in rimmed ingots may be much less pronounced than those in the ingot shown in Figs. 5 to 7-as, for example, in "ingot iron," which is entirely free from them. An example of a cross section of an ingot-iron ingot is shown on page 16 of "Research and Methods of Analysis of Iron and Steel," published by the American Rolling Mill Co. (1920). A certain amount of pipe may also occur in rimmed ingots, though it is normally porous and not as well defined or deep as in the killed ingot of Fig. 1. The Tui mine site is situated on the NW flank of Mt. Te Aroha, at approximately 400 m altitude. During underground mining operations two lead-copper-zinc ore bodies were exploited and processed on site. The legacy of the mining operation is a barren dam containing over 100 000 mm of sulphide-rich tailings. The Tui mine site is arguably the worst case of environmental degradation resulting from past mining activity inNew Zealand. Although the impacted area (approximately 4 ha) is extremely small by international standards, acid mine drainage (AMD) emanating from the abandoned tailings dam and mine adits has severely contaminated local streams and prevented natural plant recolonisation of the site for more than 20 years.   The suitability of the tailings as a potential plant growth medium was assessed with the end view of revegetating the tailings dam and alleviating AMD. This paper outlines characterisation work conducted on the tailings and summarises preliminary results from plant growth trials. The tailings contain up to 5% Fe, 1.15 % Pb, and 0.45% Cu in the form of sulphide minerals. The distribution of heavy metals, sulphate and total sulphur with depth indicates that the top 200 - 300 mm of the tailings have been extensively weathered since their deposition. The oxidation of sulphide minerals, particularly pyrite (FeS2 ) has reduced the pH of the tailings to nearly 2 in places. Below 300 mm the sulphide minerals are largely unweathered and the theoretical acid generating potential of the tailings exceeds 170 Mg CaCO3/1000 Mg tailings at certain depths. Plant growth trials were conducted to study the effects of lime and organic matter addition on the establishment of vegetation on the Tui mine tailings. Several plant species were assessed including some cultivars bred for their tolerance of heavy metals.

Optimized Operator Compartment layouts based on previous Bureau of Mines activities in standardization and optimization of controls were designed and installed in three operating vehicles. Two National Mine Service 48A-36 TorKars were modified in production prior to delivery to the Quarto Mining Company. An Elkhorn AR-4 scoop owned by Adanac Coal Company was modified in a local rebuild shop. The modified vehicles were then evaluated underground under normal production conditions for a 60 day period. Vehicle operators and management appear well satisfied with the compartment modifications.

The Galatia Mine is a dual-seam underground coal mine located in Saline County, IL. In 1984, it became the first coal mine to be permitted by the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals to operate diesel equipment underground. And it is one of the larger underground coal mines in the nation to use diesel equipment. From the beginning, Kerr-McGee determined that diesel equipment offered the best approach to the safe and productive development and operation of the Galatia Mine. The flexibility of this equipment and its ability to promptly respond to changing conditions and mining locations made its use desirable for building this large dual-seam coal mine. The mine had a planned nominal annual capacity of 3.6 Mt/a (4 million stpy) and would employ more than 500 people. Galatia's current reserves are estimated at 231 Mt (255 million st) of recoverable coal from two seams of high-quality, high-volatile bituminous coal. The Harrisburg No. 5 seam is shipped primarily as a low-sulfur steam coal or as a metallurgical blend stock. It is also used in the pulverized coal injection (PCI) process for steel making. The Herrin No. 6 seam is a medium-sulfur coal. Annual production is shown in Fig. 1. A good indicator of a mine's success is employee productivity improvement. For many reasons - the proper use of diesel equipment, the introduction of longwalls and increased employee ex¬perience - Galatia employees have achieved a steady growth in annual productivity (Fig. 1) while maintaining an exceptional safety record.

Between the early 20th Century and the present, the production of mined copper ore has increased from tens of millions of tonnes per annum to several billion tonnes per annum, an unprecedented increase. Contemporaneously, the average grade of mined copper ore has declined from over 2% to approximately 0.5%. Again, in parallel, the price of copper has increased dramatically to reflect the increasing cost of extracting and beneficiating such large amounts of low-grade ore. Within the period the copper price however exhibited several periods of intense volatility, driven by interrelationships between demand and supply, themselves strongly driven by periodic industry developments in the fields of exploration, ore extraction, mineral processing and extractive metallurgy. It is notable that these periods of intense innovation exhibit a strong correlation to preceding periods of price, demand or production volatility. This paper examines key trends in each theme between 1900 and 2018 and draws strong conclusions as to the interrelationship between them. INTRODUCTION The production of copper metal has increased from around half a million tonnes per annum to over fifteen million tonnes per annum over the course of the 20th Century. Contemporaneously, the average grade of copper ore mined has declined from over 2% to approximately 0.5% copper by weight. As a result, the volume of Run-of-Mine (ROM) copper ore required has increased from around ten million tonnes per annum to over a five billion tonnes per annum over the period, an unprecedented increase. The adage is that demand drives supply, that prices rise in times of high demand and/or short supply, and that prices fall when supply catches up with demand. The market sellers in biblical times knew this well; mediaeval market sellers equally. Dutch tulip sellers in the 1600’s experienced both in extremis — much to their dismay — and the great industrialists and early capitalists of the industrial revolution knew this also. Mining recently went through a cycle where investors and producers both believed that the “old” rules did not apply any more and that the industry was in a “supercycle” where prices would continue to rise on the back of increasing demand. However, as the GFC of 2008–2011 showed, this was not to be. Another adage says that we constantly innovate to lower costs of production. Is this true? Do we only innovate to lower cost? Has the true cost of producing copper actually gone down over the century? Or are there other balancing forces at play? Herb Kellogg, in his Centenary address to the American Institute of Mining Engineers (now SME), categorized two types of innovation: ‘Bigger and Better’, and ‘New Process’ (Kellogg, 1970). ‘Bigger and Better’ allows increased production at presumably lower cost; ‘New Process’ supports the same result at presumably the same scale, but at significantly enhanced efficiencies and (therefore) lower cost. It is suggested that both types of innovation are constantly and interchangeably required to achieve the kind of scale-up, at achievable operating and capital cost that the industry has achieved over the period. What can be shown, over this last Century and a bit, is that supply and demand are indeed inextricably linked, price and demand are linked, but so are price and cost of production. And the innovation required to sustain that weaves in between them all, cost-effectively increasing production capacity or lowering the cost of production at the same throughput, and sometimes both.

Dissociation and vaporization of gold chlorides and bromides were investigated by a static pressure method and by Knudsen cell mass spectrometer. Two distinct chlorine and three distinct bromine pressure-temperature relation-ships were observed for the respective salts. The chlorine pressures are attributed to the dissociation of Au2Cl6 and Au2C12, and the bromine pressures to the dissociation of Au2Br6, Au2Br4, and AU2Br2, These pressure-temperature relationships were used to calculate dissociation pressure equations, enthalpies, and entropies of dissociation for each salt. Mass analysis of the vapors over AU2Cls between 83° and 152° C confirmed the existence of gaseous AU2C16. Ionization potential of this molecule is 11.0±0.1 ev and enthalpy of vaporization is 28.l±2.0 kcal/mole. Mass analysis of the vapors over the gold bromides detected only Bra in the temperature range 15°-150° C.

TWO intermediate phases enter into equilibrium with the primary solid solutions of titanium.' The TiMn2 phase was identified by Wallbaum2 as of the C14 type isomorphous with MgZn2. Contrary to Maykuth, et al.,¹ the phase occuring at about the 50-50 atomic proportion has been shown to derive from a peritectoid reaction.:' A 30 day anneal at 900°C of an alloy containing 52 wt pct Mn developed sufficient of the new phase to give a clear and predominant diffraction pattern. The powder pattern was taken in a 14 cm diameter powder camera using filtered Cu Ka radiation. In all, 75 lines were recognized and measured. Interplanar spacing and observed intensities for the first 26 of these are given in Table I.

Building the Unified Comminution Model The Unified Comminution Model (UCM) was formulated with the vision of bringing all comminution models onto a common base. The structure of the model relies on knowledge of the mechanical environment in the comminution devices to predict the modes and rates of collision in a device. A detailed understanding of the breakage modes and an ability to correctly test these modes for the ores in question is then required to feed into the UCM. A model structure has been developed that has the capability of dealing with multiple modes of breakage, such as low energy impact surface damage, chipping, sliding abrasion, cumulative impact body breakage and the transition of rock between modes. A critical review is presented on the shortcomings and limitations of utilising the discrete element method (DEM) to provide the mechanical environments. The assumptions and applicability of utilising DEM in milling models are presented and proposed routes to building a realistic mechanistic model are proposed. Based on this more realistic measures of collision energy have been derived from the DEM simulations, which better mimic the real breakage tests. Generic forms of the collision energy distributions have been observed and developed into functional forms for use in the simulation environment. The method of application of this model to a pilot SAG mill is presented.

Itabirito é um minério de fero encontrado no Brasil. As reservas futuras de Itabirito requerem moagem para atingir o grau de liberação necessário para concentração. Os circuitos convencionais de cominuição adotados em projetos de Itabirito consistem de três estágios de britagem seguido de moinhos de bolas. Estes circuitos demandam uma alta frequência de manutenção e uma grande área de construção. Por esta razão um estudo de bancada e piloto foi conduzido para entender a rota de cominuição de Itabirito utilizando moinhos autógenos (AG ou FAG) e semi-autógeno (SAG). Os testes piloto demonstraram que moinhos SAG e AG são apropriados para a cominuição de Itabirito.

The solubility of cementite in austenite is computed by thermodynamic methods from the observed solubility of graphite. It is found that the solubility of cementite is greater than that of graphite in the entire austenite temperature range. Thus the prior discrepancy between this portion of the phase diagram and the observed metastability of cementite is partially resolved. FOR several years it has been apparent that a serious discrepancy exists in certain observations pertaining to the Fe-C system. Direct experimental data indicate: 1-That the curve representing the solubility of graphite in austenite'" crosses that for cementite4 at about 945°C as shown in Fig. 1. 2— That graphite and austenite saturated therewith are stable1 relative to cementite at all temperatures between the eutectoid, about 723°C, and the eutectic, about 1153°C. These observations are mutually incompatible in view of a well-known consequence of the second law of thermodynamics, namely, that the stable phase (presumably graphite at all temperatures) has a lower solubility than the metastable phase (presumably cementite). Hence either 1 or 2 above must be in error; either the measured solubility of graphite or of cementite, or the observation as to the stability of graphite, is in error. Our present purposes are: 1—To collate the available data on cementite and prepare a table of HO — HO° and of (Fa— HO°)/T. This tabular method seems the best and most convenient way to represent the heat and free energy of formation. 2—To determine whether the measured solubilities of cementite and graphite in austenite are in accord with the above table and the measured thermodynamic properties of austenite, in order to resolve, if possible, the existing paradox of these two solubilities. Enthalpy of Cementite The enthalpy of cementite at 273 °K, H279 — HOcem, was computed by integration of the low temperature heat capacity as measured by Seltz, McDonald, and Wells" 68" to 298 °K) and as given by the Debye functions recommended by them (0" to 68°K); the result is included in Table I. At higher temperature HCem — H,,"" is given by Kelley who used the data of Naeser7 (298" to 1037°K) and of Umino8,9 (273° to 1923°K). We have recalculated Hcem — H273 cem from the data of UminoO in the following way. If you believe that the goal of the space program should be a permanent, manned presence in space, then you believe in space mining. Historically, mining has been an integral part of the frontier. For the space frontier, mining is absolutely necessary. Any large-scale space facility must be built from materials mined in space. The reason is simple: the cost of getting material off the earth overwhelms all other costs. The cost of launching a pound of material from earth into low earth orbit ranges from $5000 to $10,000. Multiply this number by three to get to geostationary orbit. With the added expense of landing on the moon, an object is worth more than its weight in gold. Most space projects are impossible if materials must be hauled out of earth's enormous gravity well. For example, habitats (large structures in free-fall that simulate earth's gravity) and massive solar power satellites will take millions of tons of material to construct. Transportation economics alone dictate space as the source for oxygen, construction materials, and metals, among others. Space mining is not concerned with introducing materials for terrestrial use. The need for materials in space is infinite. The challenge for the mining industry is enormous.

The Macraes Mining Company Limited was listed on the New Zealand and Australian stock exchanges in January 1990, and the proceeds of the float were used to purchase a 70 per cent interest in the Macraes Gold Project, previously owned by BHP Gold Mines (NZ) Limited. Macraes Mining has had a 30 per cent interest in the project since May 1984, when it was incorporated. Project financing in the way of a gold loan was secured in February 1990 and construction commenced shortly afterwards. The mine construction activities were completed within nine months and the mine commenced operations in October 1990.

Current practice for monitoring static pile load tests commonly consists of measuring load and displacement at the top of a pile. This is typically accomplished by monitoring dial gauge movements, line pressure of a hydraulic jacking system, and electronic load cells on occasion. While this testing approach provides useful information for one boundary condition (the top of the pile), a system that measures movement and/or strain along the entire length of the pile can provide additional useful data that can be used to refine pile design. Automated data acquisition systems provide the essential ingredient that can integrate these types of sophisticated instrumentation devices into a standard pile load test program in a cost effective way. This paper provides a general overview of pile testing instrumentation and describes a newly developed chain of instrumentation modules that can be embedded in a pile to gather additional testing information. The new system can measure forces and movements within the test pile synchronously with measurements at the pile top, and the direct application of this system to axial and lateral pile testing is illustrated. This is particularly relevant to the design of ACIP and drilled displacement piles since determination of the reinforcement cage length is important from the standpoint of both seismic design and foundation cost.

Mini-piles have been found to be a practical, technically correct remedial underpinning method. They can be constructed in limited access areas with very little disruption. Experience indicated that mini-piles installed using a down-the-hole soil displacement hammer would be particularly effective in the "bottomless" Beaumont Clay formations in the Houston, Texas, U.S.A. area. The University of Houston Foundation Testing Facility was ideally suited to perform tests on mini-piles. The availability of extensive geotechnical data and previous pile test results was invaluable in evaluating the mini-pile test data. As expected, the mini-pile test results were consistant with test results from large sized driven piles in the same soil formation.

"Abstract: BAW and BAM have performed a large scale comparison and calibration test on static and dynamic load capacity evaluation of bored piles in glacial sandy soil. The test was performed using eight piles at the BAM test site for technical safety at Horstwalde 50 km south of Berlin. The test area has been prepared and investigated in great detail using boreholes, cone penetration tests, pore pressure sensors and geophysical methods to assure controlled conditions for all piles and tests. The piles (10 m length, 0.9 m diameter) are mainly friction piles (low toe resistance) and have been checked by integrity testing. Five piles have been tested by five contractors using the dynamic method in a blind experiment, the other ones piles by static load and/or later on by the dynamic method. Some piles have been equipped with additional fibre optic instrumentation which proved to be robust and helpful in interpreting the results of static, dynamic and integrity tests. We have experienced a deviation of the dynamic load test results gathered in the blind experiment from the static values of up to 20% in most cases, sometimes even up to 30%. This can be related to the known soil inhomogeneities, interpretation and modelling in CAPWAP and method inherent uncertainties. In cases where the static values were known by the testers for calibration, the deviations were significantly smaller. It has to be taken into account, that the two static load tests showed different results as well. Due to the low toe resistance, use of a big drop weight (11 tons) and large drop heights most piles suffered from cracking, which was clearly seen in follow up integrity tests and confirmed by excavation. The piles are available for further research.IntroductionBored piles are used in many construction projects of the German waterways authorities, e. g. bridges, piers or locks. Their load carrying capacity varies with pile type and geometry as well as soil type, parameters and structure and is thus not easy to calculate in advance. Dynamic pile testing as a cost effective addition or replacement for expensive load tests is accepted in many places (Beim and Likins 2008) but still doubted in others. Inspired by the international prediction event for piles in residual soil carried out in the frame of ISC’2 (Viana de Fonseca and Santos 2008), governmental research institutes have designed an experiment in a geological setting typical for glacial and post-glacial areas in northern Germany. Some results have already been presented by Niederleithinger et al. (2012), Herten et al. (2013) and Baeßler et al. (2013). It was intended to perform a blind test for load capacity estimation using dynamic pile testing on six drilled shafts involving five test crews. Two other piles would have to be tested thereafter using static and dynamic methods."

The uphole bench extraction strategy at EKJV Management Pty Ltd?s Raleigh Mine, requires simultaneous horizontal and vertical exposure of paste filled stopes. In order to prevent excessive ore dilution, the paste fill must be of sufficient strength to prevent failure during exposure. A numerical modelling methodology has been developed to accurately simulate the initial stress distribution within paste filled stopes, together with the strain-softening loading response of paste fill material. Due to the narrow orebody width and high deformation behaviour of the host rock mass, high closure strains are likely to cause a stiff, brittle fill material to undergo crushing failure upon exposure. The stability of paste fill exposures at the Raleigh Mine was determined by conducting a series of three-dimensional numerical models that incorporate the extraction, filling and exposure sequence of paste filled stopes. Stability charts for 2.5 m and 3.5 m wide simultaneous horizontal and vertical exposures have been derived based upon the numerical modelling results. Implementation of the stability charts has proved successful in limiting the amount of ore dilution from paste fill and provides a basis to optimize paste fill cementation and stability throughout the life of the mine.

The aim is to determine the conditions which indicate the triggering and evolution of the deformation phenomena. Les études montrent la correlation entre la minéralogie et les paramètres physiques et mecaniques. Le but est déterminer les conditions qui indiquent l’amorçage et l’evolutions des phénomènes de déformation. Diese Arbeit gibt eine Beschreibung der experimentalen Untersuchungen und der Analysen über die Marmorplatten von Carrara. Daraus resultiert, dass die Charakterisierung der Mineralogie und die Porosität der Gesteinsmaterialien die physikalische mechanische Degradation beurteilen und die Krümmungen bestimmen.

This paper summarizes explosives transportation incident and accident data collected by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) from 1993 to 1998. The paper briefly describes the legislation and regulations that cover hazardous materials transportation. The multimodal incident data collected by the Research and Special Programs Administration (RSPA) contained 86 incidents involving Class 1 materials during transit. Thirty-two occurred on public highways. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) data showed there were 8 1 motor-vehicle accidents involving explosives. The FHWA Crash datafile extract contained 649 records categorized as involving Class 1 materials although closer analysis revealed that nearly 90% of these did not involve explosives. In both databases, there were no fatalities caused by the explosive materials although 7 fatalities were the result of injuries suffered during the motorvehicle accident. There were also no serious explosions during any of these incidents or accidents. The paper concludes with an analysis of the risk involved with transportation of commercial Class 1 materials on the highway.
