The mechanized mining cycle using loaders and shuttle cars had its peak in terms of usage in the mining industry during 1950 through 1960. In Brazil, this system is still used at underground coal mines in southern Santa Catarina coal basin. With the aim of investigating the benefits of a new mining scheme using the room and pillar method for these local mines, a computational simulator model was developed in order to investigate the mining cycle. This paper presents the methodology used to develop the simulator and the results that the simulation shows regarding impact of the proposed new scheme on mining productivity.

"Pressure exerted on gold producers by regulators, project financiers, and civil society in the wake of the Baia Mare tailings spill in Romania during 2000 prompted most responsible gold companies to sign up to the International Cyanide Management Code for the Manufacture, Transport, and Use of Cyanide in the Production of Gold (the Code). The Code stipulates a ‘cradle to grave’ approach more comprehensive than that applied to any other mining reagent and poses particular challenges for operators who use cyanide-bearing tailings for backfill. This paper examine some of the challenges for Code compliance facing deep underground gold mines that employ backfill technology, most particularly the requirement to demonstrate that the potential migration of cyanide (and its degradation products) from emplaced backfill will not have an unacceptable impact on worker health and safety or on the receiving environment, either during mine life or after closure.Although the Code only contains a single reference to backfill, more careful consideration confirms that most sections of the Code that deal with tailings management are potentially applicable to mines where tailings material is used for backfill. Certain principles of the Code also pertain to aspects of operations, worker safety, emergency response, training, and dialogue with stakeholders relating to backfilling practice.For gold mines of the Far West Rand, the most significant cyanide-related risks associated with backfill operations relate to worker exposure to cyanide-bearing seepage and HCN gas. There is potential for seepage of cyanide-bearing water from backfill to compromise the beneficial use of surface and groundwater, and thus impact on downstream users and ecosystems. However, the extreme depth of mining and the specific geological and hydrological controls on the Far West Rand suggest that the potential environmental risks associated with backfill are likely to be considerably less significant than the cyanide-related risks to the workforce."

I. INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESULTS. The field-work upon which this paper is based was done in the summer of 1910, and was made possible by the courtesy of the Imperial Copper Co., which gave me access to its property. For their kindness in this respect I wish to express my thanks to W. F. Staunton and Meade Goodloe. Moreover,. B. F. Smith and G. B. Gentry, mining engineers in the employ of the company, gave invaluable assistance by placing maps,. etc., at my disposal, and by discussing with me the problems of the district; and it is a great pleasure to acknowledge this indebtedness to them. In order that the significance of some of the details that follow may be better appreciated at first reading, a general outline of the conclusions reached is given here. In the Silverbell mining-district a series of Palaeozoic limestone blocks is completely surrounded by post-Palaeozoic igneous rocks, intruded in the following order: alaskite, alaskite-porphyry, biotite-granite, andesite, and quartz-porphyry. The biotite-granite is believed to represent a differentiation of the. magma from which the alaskite-porphyry came ; and this conclusion-has an important hearing on the origin of the ores. The intrusion of both alaskite-porphyry and biotite-granite was followed by the emission of magmatic waters, which sericitized and silicified the alaskite-porphyry and granite, and produced in the limestone, by the addition to it of silica, iron, and alumina, great masses of garnet, quartz, and wollastonite. Following close upon these solutions came metal-bearing magmatic waters, which impregnated porphyry, granite, and alas kite with cupriferous pyrite, and deposited in the garnet zones chalcopyrite and copper-bearing pyrite that make important bodies of contact-metamorphic ores. Secondary enrichment has taken place in the disseminated ores in the igneous rocks,. raising their copper-content to 2 per cent. in some cases,. and extensive drilling has been undertaken to block out these deposits. East of the contact-metamorphic deposits there is a fissure-vein of lead-silver ore in the quartz-porphyry. This rock is distinctly younger than the alaskite-porphyry and the granite; and the lead-silver ores belong, therefore, to a period of mineralization distinctly later than the copper-deposition.

"The operation of mineral processing equipments is intimately related to the mineral composition of the ore. However unit performances are usually characterized in terms of metal contents or recoveries as this data is easier to obtain than the mineral contents. This paper describes a method that combines the operations of material balancing and estimation of the mineral contents of the ore. The estimated mineral contents can be used for process analysis and diagnosis of operating problems.IntroductionThe ore that is feeding a concentrator is made of minerals that condition the energy requirements for the ore comminution and the performances of the subsequent separation circuit. Indeed a change in the mineral composition of the ore may lead to lower grinding mill throughput as well as lower recovery or grade of the economical products. Despite this relationship is recognized the mineral composition of the ore is seldom measured or estimated to provide regular information for the diagnosis of operating problems. Some methods such as the QEM-SCAN (Whiten, 2008; Lamberg and Vianna, 2006) are available to measure the concentration of the minerals in ore samples but the method is time demanding and plant operators usually base their evaluation of the plant performances on chemical assays of metals or elements since this data is easier to obtain from ore samples.Usually samples of the streams of mineral processing plants are collected on a daily basis to be assayed for strategic elements. The obtained concentrations are balanced to produce coherent data with the material conservation constraint and then used to characterize the day to day operation of the plant in terms of recovery of valuable metals and grades of the marketable concentrates. The behavior of contaminant elements can also be monitored from this data allowing the operators to explain for instance a lower zinc concentrate grade by a more important contamination of iron. However such diagnosis is only partial as the contaminant element can be transported by different minerals. Indeed the iron contamination of a zinc sulfide concentrate may be caused by an inadequate depression of pyrite or due to another iron carrying mineral. A possible way to answer the question is to determine the concentrations of the various minerals in the ore and produced sealable concentrates. Since measuring the mineral contents of the ore could be a demanding task one should consider to estimate this data from the daily chemical assays of the sample collected on the main streams of the circuit. Some authors have already investigated the problem. Whiten(2008) described a method to estimate the mineral contents of an ore sample. Lamberg and Vianna(2006) proposed a method to do a sequential mineral reconstruction followed by a material balance. Few of these methods account for the mass conservation of the reconstructed mineral contents."

Removal of As(III) and As(V) in Aqueous Solution There are toxic arsenical species such as As(III) and As(V), and arsenious species have specially strong toxicity. The strong toxicity causes contamination of groundwater and water pollution for the semiconductor production process. This study is concerned with the removal of As(III) and As(V) with various kinds of Mg/Al layered double hydroxides (LDH) containing CO32-, SO42-, Cl- and NO3- as interlayer anionic species. The anion exchange property is different from the kind of layered double hydroxides and the Mg-Al-NO3-LDH is superior in the anion exchange property of As(III) and As(V) due to the nature of nitrate ion existing in the interlayer. The pH condition suitable for As(V) removal is 7.1 or more. If the initial conditions such as 10mg/dm3 of As(V) concentration, 7.1 of pH, 1 m3 of amount of solution and 99 per cent of removal are fixed, the required amount of Mg-Al-NO3-LDH is 0.27kg for two step-batch operations. The As(III) is suitable to oxidize to As(V) before the removal processing.

Two magnetic parameters are proposed as a basis for the assessment of ironsands beneficiation. The parameters are determined for raw sand prior to dredging and for magnetic separator head feed over a production period of five months. The relationships between these parameters and the performance of the magnetic separators are examined to establish the value of magnetic assessment compared with the traditional soluble iron assay method. The results illustrate that the first parameter, true magnetic fraction (TMF). Has a value superior to that of soluble iron when relating raw sand grade calculated by triangulation to magnet performance. In terms of the relationship between magnet head feed grade and magnet performance, TMF and soluble iron perform equally as assessment parameters. For the ironsands mined during the five month period, the second magnetic assessment parameter, composite fraction (CF), is shown to merely reflect TMF and offers no additional information for assessment. Conclusions are that true magnetic fraction has many advantages over soluble iron in terms of time and cost of determination and that it is a meaningful and reliable parameter upon which to base all calculations relating to the mining and beneficiation of ironsands.

Once the draw process has begun in a block cave, it is very difficult to identify which regions of the cave have successfully propagated, where the caved material is flowing from and where it is flowing to. The uncertainty around cave flow increases as the cave is drawn and can be further compounded by poor draw control practices. These uncertainties make it difficult to plan effective draw strategies to control dilution, as flow model predictions tend to gradually diverge from the actual state of the cave. There have been documented occasions where observed caving phenomena, such as muck pile surface rilling, could not be reproduced with the cave flow models of the time. The ultimate consequence of cave flow uncertainty is generally manifest as higher dilution and lower grades.In order to measure the real-time flow of caved material within an active block cave, CRC Mining and Elexon have developed, together with Rio Tinto, a cave flow monitoring system called Cave Tracker, which is being trialled at Argyle Diamond Mine (ADM) in Western Australia. The Cave Tracker system at ADM comprises electronic ‘beacons’ that have been installed down long HQ diameter drill holes located above the extraction level. As the cave-back propagates and the rock mass fragments, beacons are released into the muck pile and flow along with the caved material to the drawpoints below. At Argyle, the beacons are configured to emit a signal every three days. These signals are picked up by detectors installed on the extraction and undercut levels, allowing the positions of the beacons to be determined.By examining the real-time material flow in different regions of the cave, flow mechanisms can be better defined. Draw control strategies can then be actively tailored to manage the current state of the cave. Thus, previously undetectable indications of excessive rilling, rapid cave propagation, cave stall, air gaps and dilution entry can now be identified early and assessed continuously as the cave progresses. Keywords: Solvent extraction, dispersion, phase separation, CFD The liquid-liquid dispersion phases are separated by gravity in a solvent extraction settler. This separation step is made more effective by picket fences. The picket fence geometry and its physical placement have a significant effect on the separation process, because the purpose of a fence is to smoothen and control organic-aqueous dispersion flow in the first part of the settler and achieve a deep and dense dispersion layer in the front end of the settler resulting in a clean phase separation. In this study, physical phenomena in the solvent extraction process and phase separation in a solvent extraction settler with and without picket fences have been examined using a commercial CFX software package. It can be concluded that the used CFD-approach proved to be a complementary tool for optimizing and designing the solvent extraction settler.

Two samples of the Lower Hartshorne (Spadra) bed were collected: A sample of the raw coal with the machine cuttings excluded, and a sample of the machine cuttings exclusively. Analysis of the 5-inch by 200-mesh size fraction of the raw coal, excluding machine cuttings, showed that a product meeting minimum quality specifications could be produced by washing at 1.60 specific gravity, yielding a theoretical 93.7 percent of clean coal. A negligible amount of near-gravity material at the separation gravity indicated an easy washing problem. The sample of machine cuttings had a maximum size of 2 inches and contained about 50 percent ash. Washability tests of the 2-inch by 200-mesh size fraction indicated that a theoretical yield of 30.0 percent of specification-grade coal could be achieved by washing at 1.49 specific gravity. As the machine cuttings represent an estimated 10 percent of the total coal mined, their inclusion in the mine output would increase the theoretical net yield of salable coal by only 3.7 percent. Because the machine cuttings contained a high percentage of sink 1.80 specific-gravity material, they had neither an effect on the separating gravity required to clean the raw coal nor on the difficulty of separation. Gabbing underground versus transporting the cut-tings to the surface for disposal or washing either separately or combined with the raw coal involves a number of practical, economic; and intangible factors; hence, no specific recommendations could be made. A discussion of some of the factors involved in dealing with a similar problem is given by Gandrud and Riley.4

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the separation of aluminum from copper dump leaching liquors using a supported liquid membrane. Aluminum was selectively transported through porous polypropylene impregnated with di (2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid in an aliphatic diluent. The effects of variables, such as solution composition, temperature, and extractant concentration, were measured with a three-level fractional factorial experimental design. Experimental results were used to derive equations for predicting transport rates for aluminum, iron, and copper. The major variables influencing aluminum transport were solution temperature, feed solution pH, aluminum concentration in the feed solution, and extractant concentration. Copper and iron transport rates were almost zero when aluminum transport rates were high. Measured aluminum transport rates under the best conditions of 55° C, pH 3.0, 16 g/L A13+, and 65 pct extractant solution confIrmed the predicted value of 210 f.'g/(cm2.h). Transport rates for iron and copper were less than 5 ug/(cm2.h) under these conditions. Aluminum was recovered from the stripping solutions by sparging with gaseous hydrogen chloride to crystallize aluminum chloride hexahydrate, which was calcined to alumina. Sparging crystallization regenerated the stripping acid for recycle.

Introduction The Corbin coalfield is one of the smallest, and at the same time one of the principal, producing bituminous-coal areas in southeastern British Columbia, and is unique on account of the great original thickness of one of its coal seams and the remarkable concentration of coal in a small area that has occurred through intense folding and faulting of the measures. These are such that the deposit has been referred to at times as "the world's thickest coal seam" and as" a mountain of coal." The determination of the number, thickness, and character of the seams present, and the structure, extent, and geological relationship of the several deposits, are of vital interest both to the operating company in its endeavour to evolve the most efficient method of mining these exceptionally thick deposits and to the Government in estimating the coal resources of the different fields. With the object of ascertaining these data the writer was assigned in 1930 to geologically map and study the Corbin coal deposit. A topographic map covering Coal mountain and the immediate vicinity on a scale of 1 inch =800 feet, with a contour interval of 25 feet, made by the Topographic Division of the Geological Survey, served as the base for the geological mapping.

Most previous studies of coal flotation utilized chemically pure reagents. Since such reagents are not available in quantity, a study of various wmmercially available reagents as frothers was undertaken. Flotation procedures similar to those used in a large number of commercial coal flotation plants were employed. The reagents used were compared on yield-selectivity-wst basis. The selectivity was found to be relatively constant with yields above 70% but the reagent cost varied greatly. The types of reagents available were compared. In the past, a number of papers have been written on the use of various reagents as coal flotation frothers. For the most part, these have been an attempt to correlate the intrinsic chemical and physical proper- ties of the reagents or reagent groups to the floata-bility of various fine coals. Because of the type or nature of evaluations made, chemically pure reagents were normally used. Generally, these reagents are unavailable in commercial quantities. Therefore, the results obtained with these reagents were usually limited in usefulness to the plant operator or metallurgist. This paper presents the results of a study in which commercially available forms of various reagents were used as flotation frothers. Flotation procedures which would conform in general to those employed in a large number of commercial coal flotation plants were utilized. The objective of the test was to compare these reagents on yield-selectivity-cost basis, that is, 1) the yields obtained, 2) the ash levels obtained and 3) the reagent cost relating to these results. The effect of SiO2addition on the decomposition of Li2CO3was investigated at temperatures up to 1000ºC. It was found that addition of SiO2greatly enhanced the decomposition of Li2CO3. The main decomposition reaction started at around 600ºC, and completed just above the melting point of Li2CO3. The major decomposition product was Li2O?SiO2irrespective of the Li2CO3to SiO2mixing ratio while both reactants were available. It was ascertained that a liquid layer betweenLi2CO3and SiO2particles formed and facilitated the decomposition reaction. The governing reaction of the decomposition was the one between the dissolved Li2CO3and SiO2in the liquid layer to form Li2O?SiO2. The decomposition rate was independent of the Li2CO3/SiO2mixingratio until either one had been completely exhausted. When excess Li2CO3existed, it further reacted with the initial product of Li2O?SiO2to form 2Li2O?SiO2. When SiO2was found in excess, on the other hand, no further reaction took place. This is attributed to the fact that uponLi2CO3exhaustion there is no liquid phase available to facilitate further reaction. The apparent activation energy of the decomposition of Li2CO3in existence with SiO2is 198 kJ mol-1.

The introductory paper1 of this series described the potential behavior of tin in sodium carbonate and bicarbonate solutions whose pH ranged from 8.4 to 11.2 and demonstrated that significant and reproducible results could be obtained by proper attention to experimental technique. In examining the corrosion of tin under such conditions, it is desirable to know the effects of anions, aside from carbonate, that are likely to be present in commercial materials packaged in tin. Therefore, in this paper the potential behavior of tin in carbonate solutions to which sodium fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, sulphate, nitrate, monobasic phos-phate, dichromate, perborate and acetate have been added will be dcscribed. For most of the additions, solutions containing 0.001 and 0.01 moles of the added material were studied. The experimental procedure was exactly the same as that described in the first paper; the pH of the electrolyte was controlled by adjusting the ratio of carbonate to bicar-l,ol~ate as follows: pH 0.1 M NaHC0............................................ 8.4 2 parts 0.1 M XaHCOr, 1 pa.rt 0.1 M NaZCO?................. 9.5 1 part 0.1 M NaHCOs, 2 parts 0.1 M iVa.,C03. ................ 10.0 0.1 M Na2C0............................................. 11.2 The reagents used were all of C.P. grade.
