"The danger of autoclaves lies in the high temperatures and pressures that exist in autoclave vessels. The usage of autoclaves will continue to expand in the mining industry because of their efficiency and environmental friendliness. But increasing attention must be paid to ensuring their safety. Safety Instrumented Systems (SISs) play a critical role in autoclave plants by detecting potentially dangerous conditions, taking the plant to a safe state, informing the operator about the plant status and the cause of the trip and expediting safe plant restart. The SIS should ideally be fully integrated with but functionally independent of the Basic Process Control System (BPCS) and provide redundant logic solvers to increase safety and plant availability while reducing spurious trips.INTRODUCTIONWikipedia defines an autoclave as follows: “An autoclave is a pressurized device invented by Charles Chamberland in 1879 designed to heat aqueous solutions above their boiling point to process materials.” A typical autoclave system used in the metallurgical industry includes, besides the autoclave vessel, heat recovery (heater) vessels, high pressure positive displacement (HPPD) feed pumps, vessel lining systems, specialized internals and components, agitators, pressure letdown or flash vessels, isolation and control valves, over 2,000 I/O points and related instrumentation, and emergency relief systems."

According to the U.S Department of Energy (DOE), mineral processing activities including comminution (size reduction) uses 4% of the world electrical energy consumption. Such numbers reinforce the need to invest in energy savings initiatives in order to produce more using less. ENERGY EFFICIENCY OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES IN MINING OPERATIONS In addition, DOE, in its Mining Industry Energy Bandwidth Study, has identified huge potential for energy savings for the coal, metals and mineral industries. Even knowing the overall causes of energy waste and some potential tools for remediation, mining companies may struggle to apply such tools and get the desired results due to the following reasons: ? Limited staff ? Lack of accurate economic and investment analysis to justify energy savings projects ? Lack of knowledge to identify low or no-cost savings opportunities ? Internal competition for resources According to the workforce and talent management experts, the Talent Strategy Advisors, the demand for mining engineers is expected to exceed supply by 30% by 2013. Mining personnel are likely to be burdened with increasing and varied workloads with limited training. This will result in the need for automated and simple tools to support energy efficiency activities. Mining engineers will simply not have the time and resources to create such tools, collect and analyze the data to make decisions, and track results.

The New Britannia Mine processes a qumtz-carbonate gold ore containing 4.63 git Au at a rate of 2,200 tpd. The ore contains approximately 3 .0% arsenopyrite, 2. 7% pyrite and the rest is gangue minerals. Eight to ten percent of the gold is refractory to leaching. Two years ago, New Britannia Mine experienced cyanidation problems. Gold extraction was not stable and occasionally decreased significantly. Preliminary test work, at laboratory scale and in the plant, indicated that lead nitrate addition was beneficial. A laboratory study was initiated to evaluate the level of control of the parmneters (grinding size, dissolved oxygen, pH, free cyanide and lead nitrate) to optimize the efficiency of the process. It was found that lead nitrate addition is required to alleviate the effect of metallic sulphides. This addition causes a significant increase in the gold leaching kinetics and a reduction in the cyanide consumption. The optimum system appeared to be: leaching for 24-30 hours at pH 11.8, 50 git lead nitrate, 250 ppm NaCN and 8 ppm 02. The gold extraction was 89.8% with grinding at 89%-74Fm (leached tail at 0.48 git). Cyanide and lime consumption are 0.40 kglt NaCN and 1.9 kglt respectively. Following the incorporation of lead nitrate, overall gold extraction was increased from 89.2% to 91.1 % but no change was noticed in cyanide consumption. The gross profit is $CDN 988,000 per year.

This study examined the potential of mixing rotary kiln fines (RK fines), a waste product generated when limestone is converted to lime (CaO), with acid producing mine waste to provide 1) short-term mitigation by neutralizing acid produced by iron sulfide oxidation and 2) long-term mitigation by facilitating the passivation of iron sulfide mineral surfaces. Five loadings of RK fines were mixed with 75 g of Duluth Complex rock to produce neutralization potential (NP) added: acid potential (AP) quotients of 0,0.11,0.22,0.66 and 1.1. The mixtures were subjected to wet-dry cycling laboratory testing for 585 weeks. The rock alone produced acidic drainage, with pH decreasing below 4 after about 20 weeks of reaction and ultimately reaching the approximate range of 3.3 to 3.5; sulfate release did not decrease over time. The RK fines elevated pH and inhibited sulfate release for time periods which increased with the mass of RK fines present. The pH of drainage from the 0.11 quotient (NP added1AP) loading decreased below 6.0 after 75 weeks of dissolution and decreased to 3.6 after 117 weeks, at which time the reactor was terminated. The duplicate 0.22 quotient loadings of RK fines decreased below 6.0 after 95 and 170 weeks. The former was terminated after 117 weeks, and the latter reached a minimum pH of 2.8 after 512 weeks. Drainage pH from the 0.66 quotient decreased below 6 after 581 weeks. For the drainages which acidified, the cumulative calcium release prior to pH decreasing below 6.0 was 92 to 103 percent of that initially present as calcium carbonateloxide in the RK fines. The pH of drainage from the 1.1 quotient typically remained above 8.0 throughout the period of record. Sulfate concentrations in the drainages decreased while the neutralizing fraction of the RK fines was present, but increased after this fraction was depleted.

Rare earth metals (REMs) play a significant role in the manufacture of permanent magnets, fluorescent lamps, catalysts, medicines, super alloys etc. Recently, China, which controls 97% of world trade in REMs, imposed restriction on its export. Consequently, the global demand of REMs is escalating and is expected to exceed the supply by 40,000 tonnes annually. Present review paper reports the flow-sheets of commercial processes based on pyro-hydro and hybrid techniques as well as systematic research for process development to recover REMs from primary and secondary resources. This review paper also reports the recommendation and future prospective to fulfill its demand and supply gap keeping in view environmental prospective.

O procedimento específico mais utilizado é o Blowdown, com o abaixamento de carga até nível de ventaneiras, facilitando posterior limpeza e reparo. Para sucesso deste procedimento, é essencial um planejamento adequado das atividades. Informações técnicas e experiências operacionais permitiram o embasamento teórico e a execução do Blowdown do Alto Forno 03 da ArcelorMittal FCSA (Tubarão). Como preparação, foi efetuado o aumento do fluxo periférico (remoção de cascão) e o aumento da permeabilidade do Cadinho (maior circulação de líquidos, limpeza e drenagem). Realizou-se também a preparação de equipamentos específicos e controle dos parâmetros operacionais. O abaixamento de carga foi devidamente realizado conforme planejado, até o nível de ventaneiras e permitindo paredes internas livres de cascões.

Determine the advantages and operational limitations of water-let-assisted cutting used with mining equipment. Approach The Bureau of Mines con-ducted a research study to evaluate water-Jet-assisted cutting both in the laboratory and in underground mines. Earlier research on water-jet-assist was limited to laboratory studies where bit speeds and penetration depths were very low and large cutting force reductions were reported. For the past years, research by the Bureau of Mines and others has been concerned with the application of water-jet-assisted cutting under more realistic mining conditions. Study Results Water-jet-assisted cutting employs a mechanical cut-ting bit combined with a moderate to high-pressure water jet directed just in front of the bit tip to assist in the cutting process. Recent Bureau findings show that the addition of the water jet to the cutting bit can improve cutting in harder materials, significantly reduce respirable dust and bit wear, and increase product size. Some of these findings are presented as follows.

The tenth annual Mine Resale Evaluation was held in conjunction with the RMCMI 2001 convention at the Steamboat Springs Sheraton Resort, Steamboat Springs, Colorado June 23 through 26. The purpose of the mine rescue evaluation program is to provide an opportunity for mine rescue teams to learn new skills and improve their existing ones in a non-competitive environment. Several staged ?disaster? scenarios were held where the teams are called upon to exhibit their life saving abilities. The evaluators meanwhile are offering suggestions, both verbal and written, to help the teams better understand the situations presented them. This non-competitive environment allows the teams to work together and share their knowledge with fellow mine rescue teams providing everyone with a positive learning experience. Mine Rescue Chairman Bill Balaz, Balaz & Associates, was in charge of coordinating the events. Six teams consisting of seven to twelve members each (totaling 60 members) participated in the three-day event. Each ream was required to respond to direr different real-life scenarios plus a written general knowledge test daily. Cindy Burnham has assisted Bali, for a few years. Her responsibilities include grading all of the written tests. This year's tour professional evaluators included Art Seanz (Hazardous Ma¬terials) of Western Environmental Associates ; Guy Norton (Ropes), Guy Horton Rope Rescue; Mary Bailey (Medical), MBA Training and Morley Hense (Confined Space). Carolyn Durga, BHP Coal, also assisted in hazardous materials and medical scenarios. They each provided three different challenging mock situations per day per team. The teams had no prior knowledge of what the scenarios would be as details were provided only as they arrived. Ten volunteer victims added much drama and excitement to the event. Their realistic enactment, complete with false blood makeup and severed limbs, made for some very tense scenarios. The Mine Rescue Teams participating this year were BHP LaPlata, BHP Navjo, BHP San Juan, all from Farmington, New Mexico; Bridger Coal Co., Rock Springs, Wyoming; Sabine Mining, Longview, Texas; Solway Minerals, Green River, Wyoming and Western Energy Co., Colstrip, Montana. Many new friendships were made and much knowledge shared. A swap meet was held Saturday afternoon for the teams to exchange miscellaneous equipment, hats, shirts, etc. The trams were asked to evaluate the program and the evaluators. They responded with many positive suggestions that will help improve the upcoming events in the years to come. Culmination of the Mine Rescue program was a Tuesday morning awards breakfast where the teams were presented with trophies. Each member was also given a gold pin with the words Continuing Challenge - Ropes.' The pin was the first in a series that will be given over the next few years. The participating victims and evaluators were also commended for their outstanding efforts. Special signed "Victim" shirts were given to select volunteers. Sponsors for the Mine Rescue program were Flanders Electric Motors, Magnum Metals, Rocky Mountain Electric Motors, Sedona Consulting and Balaz & Associates. Many hours of volunteer tine and effort from various family members of participants helped make the 2001 event a huge success.

Most methods for the treatment of scrap printed circuit boards do not reclaim the components in working order as the boards are either fed to a copper smelter, to recover the valuable elements, or, simply landfilled. This work reports the dissolution of the solder in fluoroboric acid containing Ti4+ ions which was particularly selective for solder, allowing the components to be recovered. The solder was subsequently electrowon from the leachant. The boards were then shredded and the copper dissolved in ammonium sulfate and, then treated via solvent extraction to give an electrolyte suitable for electrowinning. The remainder of the metals were dissolved aqua regia, silver remained unattacked by the aqua regia, palladium precipitated as Pd(NH4)Cl6 in the presence of zinc and nickel, the gold was removed by solvent extraction and precipitated as nanoparticles. The aqua regia was then diluted and the zinc and nickel separated by solvent extraction.

Knowledge of the physical and chemical properties as well as the behaviour of the mould fluxes during melting, important in order to improve continuous casting operations. Lubrication and control of heat transfer in the mould are the more relevant functions of these materials. Values of physical properties like viscosity and surface tension at melting range temperatures are required, as much as the thermal behaviour under process conditions. The heat extraction from the liquid steel has an important effect in the final quality of products. Mould fluxes are constituted by different oxides, and may form glasses and crystal phases during cooling. The solidification rate and the chemical composition determine the proportion, type and crystalline morphology, which are responsible of the thermal transfer processes. In this paper, viscosity values are reported in the melting range temperatures calculated by means of the Riboud model and compared with fluidity results obtained by the inclined plane technique. Also the linear expansion of the mould fluxes at high temperatures was determined by dilatometry. The crystallization in two different fluxes was determined by DTA tests and correlated with the basicity index. Crystal phases were evaluated by scanning electronic microscopy on quenched samples at 1300°C. This information is relevant to increase the knowledge on the peritectic steel grades casting process in order to improve its quality. "The various districts in the United States where complex lead-zinc ores occur are too well known to require description, there being hardly a mining State with any large amount of ores of either metal that is free from this problem. This paper briefly presents developments in the volatilization process, as applied to the treatment of such ores, since the data in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 211** were published. In that bulletin, among the many types of ore treated, examples are given of the treatment of lead-zinc ores by the chloride volatilization process for the separation of lead. An outline of the general process, with views of the rotary kiln, ore feeder, firing system (these three features resemble closely those of cement-kiln practice), dust chambers, and a Cottrell precipitator to remove the fume from the gas, are also shown in that bulletin, to which the reader is referred for the results obtained, and for practical details of operation. The small initial cost of a volatilization plant, and its adaptability for use in isolated districts were emphasized.In general, it was found that when an intensely oxidizing atmosphere was maintained in the furnace, a good lead-zinc separation could be made. Therefore, a heavy sulphide ore would have to be preroasted, and enough air would have to be admitted to obtain complete combustion of whatever fuel might be used.The work done by private companies and the bureau since the data for Bulletin 211 were obtained, indicates that the ores most immediately amenable to treatment by volatilization are of two types. The first is an oxidzed lead. silrer ore whose variable lime content makes it impractical to chloridize the ore for acidulated brine leaching, and whose base metal content makes treatment by cyanidattion unfeasible, The second type is the lead-zinc ore mentioned above, and is the one on which data are available for publication at present. This article Chows what ores of this latter type are amenable to treatment by volatilization, by giving briefly some of the more important physical and chemical properties an ore should preferably possess. Several examples are given from both laboratory experimental work, and from practice in the field, showing various phases of the volatilization process."

The Bureau of Mines conducted a trenching and sampling project during 1947 on the tungsten-rich granodiorite that outcrops in Henderson Gulch, Montana. During the course of this investigation, interest was attracted to the Sunrise copper-gold mine in metamorphosed limestone in the north slope of the gulch. The mine was examined by S. H. Lorain, Chief, Mining Division, Albany Branch, in May 1948. A trenching and drilling program was recommended to develop a parallel vein indicated by outcrops to lie below the principal productive Queen vein. In the meantime, the Queen Mining Syndicate initiated a trenching program that exposed high-grade lead-copper-silver-gold ore in a nearly vertical vein that strikes N. 600 E. to east. A core-drilling program to develop this vein was initiated in September 1948. This report presents the factual data obtained from the trenching and drilling operations. The Sunrise mine was discovered about 1890. Production has been estimated to be $120,000 in gold from 40,000 tons of ore mined during the period 1892-1903. The tailing from this operation was treated by cyanidation in 1912, with a reported recovery of $3.50 to $4.00 a ton from 15,000 tons of material. Subsequent production of sulfide ore was 7,396 tons treated by smelting, with recovery of 1,569.42 ounces of gold, 10,003 ounces of silver, 352,899 pounds of copper, and 354 pounds of lead.

"Much progress has been made over the last several years in the ability to measure flotation cell hydrodynamic parameters in both the laboratory and plant. These techniques have allowed fundamental research to proceed to determine the effects that frother chemistry has on the main hydrodynamic parameters (gas hold up, bubble size) as well as on the amount of froth generation and water content of froth. A research program was begun that brought together a team consisting of private companies and a University with expertise in hydrodynamic characterization (McGill), flotation reagent applications (Flottec) and chemical synthesis (Sasol N.A.) with the purpose of characterizing frother chemistries with two goals in mind: Determine which frother chemistry can provide optimized cell hydrodynamics; and, create new frother chemistries with specific hydrodynamic properties.This paper describes the key steps that were taken that led to the development of new frother chemistry for use in flotation.The first step was the characterization of the major frother chemical families in a two phase system. The parameters measured were gas hold up, bubble size, froth height and water carrying rate at different concentrations and gas velocities.Analysis of the data indicated that definite patterns existed between frother chemistry and hydrodynamics and showed that frothers could be grouped into classes. More importantly, by modifying known frothers through chemical reaction it was shown that these frothers could be moved from one class to another. As a result of this better understanding of the interdependence of hydrodynamic and chemical properties, a new frother chemistry was proposed that was predicted to perform similarly to MIBC.The new frother was synthesized and hydrodynamic testing confirmed that the chemical performed similar to MIBC. Laboratory flotation tests were conducted on two different ore types that also confirmed the similar performance of the new chemical and MIBC. Subsequently, the new product was placed on a plant for a short period of time. The results showed that the product was an excellent frother but increased the flotation rate slightly more than MIBC at the same addition rate.Further research showed that the new frother chemistry was a family of products. By changing the reaction the resultant products could be made to be slightly weaker or stronger than MIBC but that this chemistry cannot provide hydrodynamic/froth characteristics similar to strong frothers like glycols and glycol ethers. Further work is planned to conduct longer plant trials to confirm the efficacy of this new frother family."

No mineral resources were identified during the investigation of the White Cloud-Boulder RARE II area. Only a few claims have been located in the area and only two workings were found. However, there has been considerable exploration and mining activity near the RARE II area. Sand and gravel resources are abundant but similar deposits occur closer to market areas. There are no known coal, oil, or gas deposits. Most of the RARE II area is underlain by volcanic rocks. The likeliest host rocks for metallic minerals are the metasedimentary rocks exposed in the south part of the area; there is potential for zinc and silver resources at a prospect in that part. Traces of scheelite and powellite were observed in the Kent Peak-Ryan Peak area along hair-line fractures in calcareous country rock. While no significant concentrations of the minerals were found, their presence, a northwest alignment of prospects with similar deposits, and an abundance of dikes near the deposits, suggest that the intrusive system (Summit Creek stock) exposed near the head of Little Fall Creek may extend to the northwest under the RARE II area.

The Phu Kham copper-gold operation located in Laos People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) is owned and operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited. PanAust Limited, based in Brisbane Australia, holds a 90 per cent interest in Phu Bia Mining Limited, with the remaining 10 per cent held by the Government of Laos PDR.The 12Mt/y copper-gold concentrator at Phu Kham commenced production in April 2008. Flotation copper and gold recovery from commissioning was consistently poor, due to the high levels of pyrite and problematic secondary and oxide copper species and non-sulfide gangue.The low recoveries of copper and gold from Phu Kham were recognised during the feasibility study design phase. A bulk sulfide flotation regime in roughing produced high recoveries, however a large capacity cleaning circuit was required and there was risk of not meeting saleable concentrate grade specifications. The installed design offered a capital efficient compromise to ensure that a concentrate grade of 24% copper could be achieved at acceptable recoveries.Incremental improvements in copper recovery were achieved by 2011 through conversion of conditioning cells to flotation cells in both roughing and first cleaning and increased cleaner capacity through the installation of a Jameson cell. In 2012 the Phu Kham Upgrade Project was commissioned to increase mill throughput, along with additional rougher and cleaner capacity to increase residence times at the nominal 16 Mt/y throughput. The marginal reduction in primary grind size due to the additional ball milling power also provided a small recovery improvement.This paper presents the development, design, implementation, and performance of the Increased Recovery Project commissioned in April 2013 which targeted the major causes of copper loss from the circuit. Based on fundamental and detailed test work and mineralogical analysis of concentrator streams, an optimised design was developed which has increased copper and gold recoveries by over 5% and 10% respectively. The Increased Recovery Project has positioned the concentrator to process high pyrite ores that were previously considered untreatable, and opened further opportunities for maximising flotation recovery by de-bottlenecking plant regrind and cleaning capacity.CITATION:Hoyle, A, Bennett, D and Walker, P, 2015. This document is Volume II of a two-volume report on underground and surface coal mine fires occurring between 1950 and 1977. Volume I discusses the methods of data acquisition, data analysis procedures, results and conclusions. This volume contains (1) a master list of all fire incidents obtained from MSHA reports, (2) an annotated bibliography of all MSHA reports, journal articles on selected incidents, and non-reportable fires (appendix), and (3) indexes to be used in accessing incidents in the master list and annotated bibliography. These three types of information provide the reader with a complete summary of coal mine fires during the period from 1950 through 1977 and a convenient means to locate incidents of specific interest. The body of this volume is organized around two tables and a series of indexes. The two tables are master lists of underground and surface fire incidents. They are followed by 14 indexes keyed to the master list and annotated bibliography. The appendix contains three different parts: o The annotated bibliography of MSHA fire reports (one section each for underground and surface mine fires) o The annotated bibliography of journal articles about selected fires from the MSHA bibliography o A listing of non-reportable fires (one section each for underground and surface mine fires) Descriptions of the contents and use of each of the three major components of this volume (i.e., master list, indexes, and appendix) are presented in Section 2.0.

Inauguration of the new political dispensation in South Africa in1994 initiated a dynamic shift in the ownership, management and development of the country?s affluent mineral heritage. The process of substituting the old South African regime with a new equitable system started soon after the 1994 election of the African National Congress (ANC) to parliament. The Congress?s Freedom Charter revealed the intent of the new dispensation when it called for radical transformation of mineral development. However, since then there have been important changes affecting the rules of mineral development. These are: ?A drastic change in politics ushered in by negotiation, a spirit of reconciliation and a desire to settle disputes peacefully ?The globalization of the South African mining industry in tandem with the opening of domestic mineral resources to foreign capitalists and ?The introduction of sustainable development as a holistic approach to mineral development in order to replace traditional narrow-minded environmental management. Each of these significantly shaped the new mineral investment environment of South Africa.
