Twin bore running tunnels driven approximately 4,500 route feet by a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) EPB Tunnel Boring Machine link the West Portal and East Portal on this complex Light Rail Project. One third along the way, the TBM arrives at the Beacon Hill Station which is the deepest underground “binocular” station of its kind in North America and then “walks-across” the station to be re-launched on the other side to complete the drive. This paper discusses briefly the layout and design considerations but then focuses more deeply on the approach by the Contractor to drive and supply the tunnel. The paper addresses the approach used to launch, re-launch and recover the TBM and touches briefly on muck volume control and monitoring plus settlement monitoring and the performance achieved. Also of interest is a unique solution to a difficult launch situation involving a secant pile tieback wall designed with several rows of double I-beam steel walers spanning the eye at the West Portal under the I-5 freeway.

THE exact nature of the changes that take place in the iron-nickel alloys, giving rise to the interesting and useful expansion alloys in the Invar range, has yet to be fully understood. Similarly, the ternary iron-nickel-cobalt alloys, which also possess such commercially useful expansion characteristics, 1,2 are concerned with transformations that appear to be identical with those found in the parent iron-nickel alloys. The investigations on iron-nickel alloys in the range 26 to 29 per cent Ni have been reported by several authors" wherein it is shown that there are factors other than temperature, such as stress and grain size, which play an important part in determining the temperature at which the low-temperature transformation takes place. It will be shown in this paper that the ternary iron-nickel-cobalt alloys having nickel contents comparable to the alloys mentioned above behave in a parallel manner. The alloys in the range of 26 to 31 per cent Ni and 16 to 21 per cent Co have a coefficient of expansion of about 4.0 X 10-1 per degree Centi-grade, and the alloys in this range of composition find considerable application in making glass-to-metal seals, because these expansion properties so well match commercial glasses. The behavior of these alloys is not a simple matter, for it has been observed in alloys of 28.5 per cent Ni and 18.5 Co that severe working can cause the appearance of a second phase having a needlelike structure similar to the martensite structure in carbon steels. Fig. 1 shows the change brought about in an alloy of this composition when a strip of this material was cut with tin shears. This second phase has been identified as the body-centered cubic alpha phase, and it is the purpose of this paper to describe the results of some of the preliminary investigations in the study of the changes involved in these alloys.

The Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration held the 12th MPD Student Poster Contest on March 2, 2022, during the MINEXCHANGE 2022 SME Annual Conference & Expo. The event showcased the work of 32 graduate and undergraduate students from U.S. and international institutions. The contest began in January when the students submitted one‐page abstracts for judging. In February, they prepared and presented posters that explained their research, and each student had five minutes to explain their research to a panel of judges during the conference. Recognizing the students’ efforts in working hard on their research topics and setting aside time to complete the necessary steps to enter the poster contest, the MPD provides monetary rewards to all participants. For graduate students, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, and third through seventh places $200 each, and for undergraduate students, first place receives $1,000 and second place $500. The main authors of nonplacing entries receive $125 each. Participation in the contest includes a free ticket to the MPD Luncheon, where the winners are announced.

The Bureau of Mines, as part of its mission to effect pollution abatement, conducted research to study various means of dewatering Florida phosphatic clay wastes and reclaiming mined lands. The work was done in cooperation with 10 Florida phosphate companies. During this work, a novel technique to effectively dewater phosphatic clay wastes was developed. The solids contained in the clay waste slurry are slowly compressed by moving wire mesh screens through the system. In a typical application, the screens were moved downward, compressing solids ahead of the screens. The rate of movement of the screens is an important variable in the process. It is believed that the moving screens distort the gel structure of the phosphatic clay system and cause the release of water. Samples of 18 clay wastes, including a high-grade attapulgite from beneficiation plants of the Florida phosphate field, were studied using the method. Typical samples were concentrated from initial solids of 4.7 and 11.9 percent to 16.8 and 25.2 percent, respectively, in 3-1/2 days. The high-grade attapulgite sample was dewatered from 2.7 percent solids to 13 percent solids in the same period.

A simulated rockburst experiment was conducted underground at a deep level gold mine. This was done by means of a large explosion detonated in solid rock close to a tunnel sidewall. The resultant shake-out damage is typical of that associated with a small seismic event in close proximity to a tunnel that is subjected to the estimated field stress, as in this case, of 50 MPa. The experiment involved: ?the design of a blast to mimic a seismic source ?seismic monitoring using a dense seismic array ?high speed video filming ?a study of rock mass conditions (fractures, joints, rock strength etc.) before and after the simulation using mapping and ground penetrating radar ?special investigations to evaluate the mechanism and the magnitude of the damage ?a study of support behaviour under excessive dynamic loading.

Shott, following which President Shott made his opening address. On motion of H. C. Marchant, duly seconded, voted and carried, the reading of the minutes of the thirty-eighth regular meeting was dispensed with. On motion of Ronald C. Oliver, duly seconded, voted and carried, the President was authorized to appoint auditing, new members, resolutions and nominating committees, which appointments he then announced would be made at the afternoon session. An interesting talkie entitled "Coal Mine Explosions" was shown by Mr. William Forbes for the U. S. Bureau of Mines.

The latter half of the 20th century has seen the proliferation of a series of codes to address commodity needs which were brought about by rapidly advancing technologies and the globalization of markets and consumerism. This paper addresses the specific needs and the origin of this surge and presents these codes in the context in which they were developed. It also compares the main codes or groups of codes and elaborates upon their strengths and weaknesses. Three main categories of codes are identified, namely codes for reporting to international agencies, codes addressing government needs and, finally, codes for the investors and the stock market. Codes governed by international agencies usually relate to strategic commodities which have highly specialized fields of usage such as nuclear power generation where international cooperationis eventually the only viable approach for both the development of technologies and their applications. Codes for reporting to governments address the necessity of each state to exploit its mineral potential profitably and to secure the preservation of wealth for future generations. Reporting to investors is experiencing a considerable popularity as of late because of globalization in mining and the growing need for outside financing of mining projects, whose capital requirements are getting out of reach for the average mid-cap mining company. All these codes have advantages and shortcomings dictated by the specific circumstances under which they were developed, therefore necessitating the definition and implementation of some kind of international standard whereby investments and the spread of information across political boundaries would be facilitated. Though none of these codes might ever become international in the true sense of the word because of significantly different legislations at national level, a step that would greatly contribute to the cross-border disclosure of information would be the reciprocal recognition of competent persons by the major mining countries, including China and Russia. It is also becoming essential that financial institutions and investors be properly advised on mining projects by reporting reserves and resources in a transparent and responsible way with the relevant public disclosures being compiled by professionals who take full responsibility for their submissions. Major problems associated predicting soil-structure interaction behavior are based on the fact that soil is neither homogeneous nor elastic and soil properties are spatially variable. There also exist significant coupling problems between the behavior of the structure and geologic media. When designing foundation or other geotechnical structures, the load transfer between the soil and structure takes place at the contact surface. This surface is called the interface. The behaviors of interface play an important role in the load-deformation response of soil-structure interaction systems. The purpose of this study is to develop improved model for simulation of saturated sand-steel pile interface behavior based on a general concept, called the disturbed state concept (DSC), which can characterize the behavior of saturated soils under dynamic loads. In this study, the Disturbed State Concept (DSC) constitutive model is calibrated and modified for steel pile-saturated sand interface and interaction by using the continuous hardening model for relative intact (Rl) state and the critical state model for the fully adjusted (FA) part in the saturated sand material. The general formulation for implementation has been developed. Then, the DSC model with modification for interface and saturated sand is implemented in finite element program based on the generalized Biot's theory. The interface tests under one-way monotonic and two-way cyclic loading and cyclic triaxial tests are executed for defining the parameters for interface and surrounding soils. Based on these parameters, steel pile-saturated sand interface and interaction are numerically simulated using the finite element program modified in this study. The DSC predictions show improved agreement with the observed results from laboratory test.

For purposes of coal classification it is desirable to know the composition and calorific value of the pure coal substance; that is, of the coal free from its ash-forming minerals. Two methods suggest themselves: (1) To free the coal from most of the ash-forming material previous to the analysis; and (2) to analyze the coal as received and calculate the analysis, with certain more or less arbitrary corrections, to the pure-coal basis. Calculation methods are obviously more apt to give correct results with low-ash than high-ash coals. With coals of unusually high ash it would appear preferable to remove, previous to the analysis, as much of the inorganic matter as possible, by float-and-sink or acid-treating methods. Effect of Ignition on Inorganic Constituents of Coal The need of corrections in calculating analysis to the pure-coal basis is due to the fact that the ash, as determined by ignition, is not the same, in either weight or composition, as the inorganic mineral matter in the coal. On ignition a number of changes occur in the coal such as loss of water of hydration of the shaly material, conversion of pyrite (FeS2) to ferric oxide (Fe203) with evolution of the sulfur as sulfur dioxide or possible fixation of more or less of the sulfur in the ash as calcium sulfate (CaSO4), and decomposition of calcite (CaC03) to calcium oxide (CaO). The amount of sulfur from pyrite which remains in the ash as calcium sulfate depends on the amount of calcite and pyrite in the coal. Certain coals high in both calcite and pyrite show relatively large amounts of sulfate sulfur in the coal ash. The determination of total carbon and hydrogen in coal includes, besides the organic carbon and hydrogen, the carbon of inorganic carbonates such as calcite, and the hydrogen of the water of composition of some of the ash-forming minerals. In May 1973, the Bureau of Mines asked Arthur D. Little, Inc. (A DL) to investigate existing industrial communication standards that may be applicable to the problem of developing standards for mine communication, considering that the standards that may ultimately be developed will require simple field procedures for the industry and the inspectorate to determine that communication systems are properly functioning. The emphasis on this study is on telephone communications as related to coal mine applications. B. TASKS The tasks agreed upon for this program were as follows: 1. "Investigate the current practices and existing standards of other industries under government regulation. 2. Determine applicable methods for industry personnel and inspectors to ascertain conformance on-site with minimal test hardware. 3. Review the Bureau's approval, testing and inspection procedure as it may impact the development of such standards. 4. From the above studies investigate the development of installation and performance standards for mine communications, including voice and telemetry. 5. Prepare a written report specifying what standards and field inspection techniques are applicable with recommendations for development of subsequent data and ultimately standards and field inspection techniques. 6. Prepare a written summary of the findings of various investigations with an appendix covering the detailed findings of each investigation. 7. Prepare a list of suggestions of additional assistance the Bureau might require in subsequent phases of developing communication standards and means of ascertaining performance."

A mathematical model of plastic deformation occurring in cold plug drawing of mother tubes with initial cross-sectional wall thickness variations (CSWTV) has been developed. The main provision of the model is that eccentricity em is of such value that projection of all forces acting upon the plug in the deformation zone along the axis perpendicular to the drawing axis equals to zero. Calculations have proven that with other conditions being equal increase in the die cone angle and the deformation cycle number reduces CSWTV. Up to 1914 almost all of the world's supply of potash came from Germany and Alsace. With the cessation of shipments from Germany during the World War the importance of a domestic suppler was evident. During the past 15 years the United States has been working toward the establishment of a domestic potash industry which would end foreign dominance in this commodity. The Federal government has taken an active part in this program. As its share in the work, the Bureau of Lines has ascertained the potash resources in certain district's through core drilling and has engaged in a comprehensive program of research on the extraction of potash from its various minerals. Until the passage of the Winter bill (H. R. 496) by Congress in 1928 the Bureau of Mines had not been able to give any consideration to the western ores, wyomingite (leucite) and alunite. With the massage of this bill, however, the ray was opened for the extension of the potash studies to cover these materials.

"In early 1988 the decision was made by Noranda Minerals Inc. to install pressure filters at the GECO mill to replace the vacuum disk filters and bunker-C fired rotary kiln dryers. Two filters were installed, one for copper concentrate and one for zinc concentrate. Completion of the project was scheduled for the third quarter of 1989. The filters were made operational in October 1989. Some work remains to be done yet on loadout conveyors for total project completion. Capital expenditures for the project have been approximately $2,700,000 to date. The paper describes the selection criteria for the filter, the installation, startup and associated problems.1. INTRODUCTIONThe filter model chosen for the project was the Verti-Press model VP-50-6(7) (Figures1 ,2 and 3) by Filtra Systems of Farmington Michigan, USA. The decision to purchase the Filtra Systems filter was based on gaining familiarity with a different, mechanically simpler pressure filter than the Larox design and to a lesser extent a necessity for repairs to the the disc filter, rotary kiln dryer system used at the GECO operation for its' copper and zinc concentrates. The fact that it is manufactured in North America was an important consideration. The same basic principles of pressure filtration as the Larox machine are used but the implementation is quite different and somewhat simplified with some interesting innovations. 2 filters were installed to allow direct and immediate comparison of the same machine on both fine and coarse materials. Copper concentrate is reground for cleaning on the flotation circuit while zinc is not. Screen analysis of composited samples of concentrates for 1988 indicated that expected copper concentrate would be approximately 66% minus 400 mesh and zinc 50% minus 400 mesh (Tables 1 & 2).The filter is composed of six horizontal chamber module layered vertically and held together in a frame by 1 O large bolts; torqued down to 4000 ft-lbs. 6 individual belts are used; each with its own drive system. The belts themselves are of a 3 piece design with a filter cloth portion, a support belt and a rubberized intermediate portion. They are held together with steel clipper lacings. A basic description (1) of the filter operation is as follows. ""The horizontal filler chamber is closed by hydraulically pressurizing seals across each end of the filter chamber to 200 psi. The feed pump then pumps slurry into the filter chamber. Suspended solids are retained on the filter belt and the filtered solution drains into a lower drip tray and flows from the filter by gravity. At the end of the filtration or feed cycle, a rubber diaphragm in the filter chamber is pressurized hydraulically to 100 psi pressure. This removes all free liquid from the filter chamber and the filter cake. After the diaphragms are retracted the filter cake is blown with compressed air to remove any residual cake moisture. The seals are then retracted and the belt is advanced to discharge the filter cakes. During the cake discharge the belts are washed with a spray header located at the drive end of the filter. The belt assemblies move one (1) complete revolution during the cake discharge cycle. The cycle automatically repeats until the filter is shut down by the operator."

In November 1940, the Bureau of Mines started exploration of the Three Blacks manganese properties - Black Diablo. in Pershing County and Black Eagle and Black .Rook in Lander County. The purpose was to determine possible reserves of manganese in the deposits. It is reported that a small amount of manganese was mined from the Black Diablo during World. War 1. No mining except that necessary for assessment work had been done on the Black Eagle. Shipments were being made from the Black Rock deposit to a concentrator at Vain, Nev., while the Bureau's development work was progressing. The Black Diablo deposit consists of one patented claim owned by the Charleston. Hill National Manes Co. Mary L. Clough of Winnemicca, Nev., president. The deposit is about 20 miles by a gravel and dirt road southwest of Golconda, a town on U. S. Highway 40 and the Southern Pacific Railway, Pershing County, Nev. The deposit lies at an elevation of about 5,600 feet on the east flank of the north-south trending Sonoma Range. The property was leased by Messrs. Hollis Chatwin, T. E. Chatwin, and R. H. Richards of Salt Lake City and Mammoth, Utah. The lessees installed a crusher and erected an ore bin below the open cut on the deposit and mined and, shipped about 5,000 tons of about 30 to 52 percent manganese ore to the Columbia Steel Co., Provo, Utah.

Two versions of a VF transceiver to aid in location of trapped miners has been developed and tested. The belt worn model was produced in both transmitter and transceiver configurations. In addition, a quantity of the belt worn models were fabricated using aluminum wire instead of copper in order to reduce unit weight. Ten prototypes of a battery cap model VF transceiver were also fabricated demonstrating further unit size and weight reduction while maintaining electrical performance. Samples of- both versions were tested environmentally and the test data is included in this report. While both versions of the VF transceiver are similar electrically, and are constructed using convential manufacturing techniques, the battery cap model realizes a lower total weight, smaller volume and production cost than the belt worn version. Operationally, the battery cap model assures that the VF transceiver will always be with the miner.

The basis of this paper is a compilation of work in the design and construction of copper heap leach facilities, and interviews with various heap leach operations personnel in Chile and Peru. The purpose is not to highlight specific mines and their performance, but rather to discuss geotechnical/civil features of copper heap leach facilities that function well, as well as features that do not. During the 1990s several copper heap leach facilities were brought on-line in South America. Many of these facilities have now been operational for a number of years during which time the operators have been able to monitor the performance of their heaps. This paper serves as a compilation of operators? experiences, and provides a discussion of the lessons learnt over the past decade. Several key geotechnical issues are examined, focusing upon the integrity of the ore, drainage material and pipe network, along with the success of inter-lift liners. This conference provides a timely update of the original paper (Burkhalter et al, 2002).

Primary cementing is the process of placing cement in the annulus between the casing and the formations exposed to the wellbore. Portland cement was first used in 1903 in the Lopoc Field in California for well cementing. Since then, the major objective of primary cementing has always been to provide zonal isolation in oil, gas and water wells, i.e. to exclude fluid(s) in one zone from another zone in the well. To achieve this objective a hydraulic seal must be created between the casing and cement and between the cement and the formations, while at the same time preventing fluid channels in the cement sheath. This requirement makes primary cementing the most important operation performed on a well. Without complete isolation in the wellbore, the well may never reach its full producing potential. The industry knowledge on cements relies heavily on empirical data, but the chemistry, physics and structure of cement are not fully understood yet. The strength of concrete can be increased essentially by reducing its porosity through optimizing the size distribution of its components and filling the residual porosity of the hydrated cement phase with inorganic fillers. This approach has successfully utilized in different ways and several technologies for placing high performance oil and gas well cements have been developed over the last few decades. There are reasons to believe that the next source of improvement will lie in the fine-tuning of the hydrates themselves and of the different parameters that drive short (ionic?covalent bonding) and long (ionic correlation) interactions.
