The petrology and age of mid Cretaceous to Palaeogene marine volcanics may provide important clues to the palaeogeography of the period, particularly for tectonic elements and events outboard of the Papuan Basin. This initial survey of known marine volcanics of this age reveals a paucity of reliable data on isotopic ages, geochemistry and syngenetic mineralisation on virtually all units. Existing data allows a tentative subdivision of known marine volcanics into either MORB-like early Palaeogene rifts/ marginal basins, early Palaeogene ensimatic arc rocks overlying ?Late Cretaceous and Palaeogene fore-arc/marginal basin crust, late Palaeogene ensimatic arc rocks, and mid to Late Cretaceous ensialic rift rocks. Due to lack of data, some units are difficult to classify into these categories.

The Barneys Canyon orebody is a sediment-hosted disseminated gold deposit located 8 km (5 miles) north of the Bingham Canyon porphyry copper mine. Mineable oxide reserves are 8.6 million tonnes (9.5 million short tons) grading 1.64 g/tonne (0.048 oz/ton) gold. Host lithologies are carbonates and siliciclastics of the Park City and Kirkman-Diamond Creek Formations of Lower Permian age. Gold distributions are controlled by favorable stratigraphic units and associated alteration, and structures. Dominant alteration is decalcification and bleaching of carbonates, and argillization and bleaching of sandstones. Gold to silver ratios are greater than 1:1. Anomalous trace metals include arsenic, antimony, mercury and thallium. The Melco deposit lies 2.4 km (1.5 miles) southwest of the Barneys Canyon deposit. It is spatially associated with a steeply northwest-dipping siliciclastic breccia in the Kirkman-Diamond Creek Formation at the contact with underlying orthoquartzites of the Freeman Peak Formation. Both gold-bearing oxidized and sulfide lithologies are present, often in sharp contact. Mineable oxide reserves are 2.8 million tonnes (3.1 million short tons) grading 2.40 g/tonne (0.07 oz/ton) gold. Anomolous trace metals include arsenic, antimony, mercury and thallium, which are generally present in concentrations greater than those at Barneys Canyon, particularly in sulfide-bearing material. A spatial, temporal and genetic relationship is proposed between the Melco deposit and late-stage gold mineralization at Bingham Canyon, although both the Melco and Barneys Canyon deposits have many similarities to Carlin-type gold deposits.

A variety of processing technologies exist for recovery from both primary and secondary sources of rhenium. Currently, there are no known primary rhenium deposits, thus, the method in which primary rhenium is produced is dependent on the commodity of which it is a byproduct, e.g., copper, molybdenum, uranium, etc. In addition, focus on the recovery of rhenium from secondary sources, such as alloy scraps and catalysts, is continually growing. An alum/sulfur deposit (USDA organic registered) was mined underground for alunite (K,Na) Al3 (SO4)2 (OH)6 from the early 1900s to the 1930s. It is now being mined as an open pit quarry. A larger assemblage of minerals is included with this method (Alunite, Potassium?Alum, Jarosite, Gypsum, Native Sulfur and K-feldspar). This assemblage of minerals provides the necessary requirements as a Volcanic Soil Conditioner Sulfur-Potash. Heart of Nature? Company has been marketing this product to farmers on the west coast as a (1) pH reducer, (2) soluble sulfur and potassium source for plant growth and (3) soluble calcium. Recently, a new market has been tapped. This product has been found to solve many odor, bacteria and algae problems faced in the dairy industry.

An understanding of the nature of yield zones surrounding coal mine excavations is fundamental to the design of mine support systems. Various methods have been designed for investigation of underground rock masses and an extensometric technique, the Magnetic Rod Extensometer, has been developed to overcome inherent design limitations in existing equipment of this type. This paper refers to the prototype form of the extensometer and details changes designed to overcome a variety of drawbacks indicated by routine use of the equipment. The principal change has been one of manual to computerised data acquisition and presentation in the laboratory phase of the system. This has dramatically reduced the time taken to process underground measurements and produce numerical and graphical results. The revised Magnetic Rod Extensometer represents an integrated instrumentation system that combines speed and accuracy in all areas of data handling.

A new concept was proposed for a personal warning device for use by miners who may be exposed to health hazards from inhalation of alpha-emitting radionuclides, especially radon-222 and its short-lived daughters. Two successive prototype models of the proposed instrument were designed, fabricated and tested. The Personal Alpha Alarm, in its final form, weighs less than 90 g (3 ounces), and can easily he mounted on a miner's safety cap. It is powered r, by electricity drawn from the cap-lamp battery, and consumes less than 100 n A at 4VDC. It is entirely passive and has no moving parts. Alpha-radiation originating in the air around it is detected by a 5 cm2-area semiconductor-type sensor that was developed especially for this purpose. The presence of alpharadiation in the air is communicated to the wearer by means of a small flashing light-a light-emitting diode-clipped to the brim of the safety cap. When the intensity of alpha-radiation exceeds a predetermined threshold, the flashing mode changes to a continuous illumination, thus providing an alarm signal to the wearer. Because the detector senses all alpha-emitters in the air, including 222Rn, it is not able to measure Working Levels accurately. For its intended purpose, however, which is to give a timely warning of excessive levels (several times the normal control level) of radon and/or radon daughters in an individual's air environment, the Personal Alpha Alarm is expected to be a useful instrument.

The Bureau's waste recycling and disposal program is directed toward the following four main areas of research and development: (1) extraction of mineral, metal, and energy values from urban refuse; (2) upgrading and recycling of automotive and related ferrous and nonferrous scrap; (3) recovery, utilization, and stabilization of mine and mill processing wastes, and (4) recovery and reuse of values from industrial waste products. This publication updates Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8529, which was issued August 1971.

"INTRODUCTION This report describes the results obtained from a diamond-drill exploration project performed by the Bureau of Mines on the nickel deposits of the Yakobi Island, Alaska. The Federal Geological Survey 6/ completed a detailed geologic study and mapped the area during the summer of 1940, and a Bureau of Mines examining engineer 7/ made a preliminary examination of the deposits in June 1941, at which time core drilling was suggested as the logical means of determining the extent and grade of the deposits. Equipment and supplies were unloaded on the beach at Yakobi Island on October 21, 1941. The drills were moved to Bohemia Basin, where actual drilling operations wore begun under the direction of a Bureau of Mines engineer 8/ on November 7, 1941. Two core-drill holes were completed on December 7, 1941. Upon the request of the drilling contractor, operations were recessed owing to severe winter conditions. Work on the project was resumed April 27, 1942, under the direction of another Bureau of Mines engineer 9/ and was completed August 15, 1942. During the 1942 season, 13 core-drill holes were completed, and 10 surface pits and a tunnel were sampled. A total of 5, 191 feet of core-drill hole was drilled in 15 holes during the entire project. The results of drilling and sampling form the basis of this report."

The combination of high moisture and low heating value has restricted most low-rank coal (LRC) usage worldwide to mine-mouth power generation. The objective of this study was to subject two Alaska low-rank coals to hydrothermal drying to enhance their marketability in the Pacific Rim markets and to evaluate the chemical and physical properties of the dried products as a function of process conditions. Coals from Usibelli Coal Mine and the Beluga coalfield have a heating value of approximately 18.5 MJ/kg and contain about 28% moisture. Hydrothermal treatment (at 275° to 325° C) of lump coal, from the Usibelli Coal Mine and the Beluga coalfield, enhanced the heating value of the material, on an equilibrium moisture basis, from 18.5 MJ/kg to nearly 27.8 MJ/kg. The product coal, with a high heating value and only 0.2% S, is an environmentally-acceptable premium fuel; additionally, with the Hardgrove grindability index of the coal greatly improved, its value is even further enhanced. An increase in hydrothermal drying temperature promotes vesiculation of resinite. Also, ulminite reflectance increased to 0.92%, and ulminite was subjected to widespread vesiculation; this resulted in a coke-like structure indicative that the material went through the fluid stage.

Statnamic load testing is becoming widely accepted as a method to quickly and economically determine the load-deflection behaviour and ultimate static resistance of high capacity deep foundations. Strain instrumented large diameter bored shafts were tested at four locations for the federal and state Departments of Transportation in the United States. Tests were conducted vertically (to 30 MN) and laterally on the shafts and, in some cases, testing was completed over water. Instrumented shaft test results provided shaft load distribution with depth and shaft shear transfer stress throughout the soil stratum. Shaft end bearing and ultimate end bearing stress values were provided. On two projects, Osterberg load cells provided comparative static data for skin friction and end bearing. Correlations between Statnamic derived static load-displacement results and Osterberg load-deflection results are very good. Statnamic lateral load test results were correlated with static lateral results in addition to providing useful dynamic response and damping data.

The 8 ft by 91/2 ft drive which joined No. 7 Shaft with Browne Shaft on the 1,480 ft level was extended from both ends and met at a point approximately 12,000 ft from No. 7 (2,000 ft from Browne).The surveying required for this 2 1/2 mile haulage drive called for greater accuracy than was obtainable from South Mine standard methods. Procedures and devices from published information were tried and modified as required to suit local conditions. Several new methods were applied and improved as the drive advanced. The control of angular, linear and level measurements was perhaps considerably in excess of the requirements, but this was offset by abnormally large discrepancies resulting from shaft plumbing. The accuracy of the final breakthrough, although not to the standard desired, was sufficient to complete the connection without inconvenience and added cost.INTRODUCTIONThe acquisition of the Browne Shaft leases in January 1962 presented the management of Broken Hill South Limited with the problem of transporting ore from these leases to its mill. It was eventually decided that diesel locomotivehaulage through a 2t mile drive on the 1,480 ft level between the two mines was the best solution. The drive was advanced from both ends after Browne Shaft was deepened by 80 ft to reach the 1,480 ft level horizon. Each end advancedabout 15 ft/day with the miners working three 7 hr shifts. Blasting was restricted to the end of the shift.The survey work involved five shaft plumbings and 78 theodolite stations in a traverse, underground and surface,of more than 5 miles. Because of the exceptional length of the drive, an unusually high degree of reliability was required.The aim was for a maximum error at breakthrough of 1 ft 1 in 30,000, and to secure this, precise methods of linear measurement were necessary. Shaft plumbing in particular posed special difficulties.

"A laboratory froth flotation experiment was conducted on a low-grade carbonatite copper ore sample obtained from Phalaborwa in the Limpopo province of South Africa. The sample was a homogenous hydrocyclone overflow which serves as the feed to the flotation cells at Palabora Mining Company (PMC). The sample has an average copper assay of 0.59% with predominant copper-bearing minerals being chalcopyrite, bornite and cubanite. The carbonatite nature of the ore comes from the high content of calcium (28.85%) and magnesium (6.84%) minerals. Collectors used were sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate and potassium ethyl xanthate alongside Senfroth 38 supplied by Senmin. The results showed that at 200 g/t mixture of collectors (50:50), an optimum grade of 8.03% Cu in the rougher flotation concentrate was achieved at 74% recovery, while during the second flotation, 24.65% Cu was obtained at 74.4% recovery using a Senfroth 38 dosage of 6 L/t with 100 g/t mixed (50:50) collectors. The particle size and pH value of the pulp played a significant role in that the mixed collectors performed efficiently at pH above 8.3 and at room temperature while particle sizes greater than 53 µm were well concentrated when compared with those of less than 53 µm. INTRODUCTION The need for copper ore concentration research is on the rise as a result of the depletion of deposits and the advent of low-grade copper ores. Although most copper ore deposits have other valuable minerals that support their economic extraction, the increase in technological innovations as regards copper usage and applications has increased the demand for copper. Several factors influence concentration results in a froth flotation column, of which the reagent used is most influential."

Plain carbon steels with 0.48 and 0.95 pct C were quenched and tempered at 705°C to produce carbide dispersions with spacings on the order of 1 p. The morphology of the structure consisted of a carbide-dislocation network. The strengthening due to the dispersion was found to vary linearly with M-½ where M is the mean free-ferrite path determined by the entire network. No preyield microstrain preceded the upper yield point. After prestraining, the lowest stress at which dislocation movement could be detected was 104 psi; this frictional stress was independent of the dispersion and prestrains up to 6.5 pct. The Cottrell-Petch equation for grain-size strengthening was used to discuss the dispersion strengthening in this investigation. The results support an impurity mechanism for the upper yield point rather than one based on the Johns ton- Gilman theory. IT was pointed out by Gensamerl that the mean free path in the matrix is the important variable which controls the degree of dispersion strengthening. Gensamer's data on steels showed a linear relationship between the yield point and the logarithm of the mean free-ferrite path. The first theory was by Orowan,2 who suggested the mechanism of dislocations bowing between particles, with the resulting relationship that where a is the yield point, P is the distance between particles, and G is the shear modulus. The Orowan equation applies to that range of dispersion where P is large compared to the particle size and the particles are not coherent, so that the matrix is essentially free of internal stresses. As was pointed out by Orowan, there are different degrees of dispersion which, in turn, will influence the strength-controlling mechanism. However, in this investigation, we wish to confine ourselves to the region of coarse dispersion, where the Orowan mechanism should, intuitively, be applicable. It was soon evident that the data, which existed at about the time that the Orowan theory was proposed, did not agree with the Orowan equation in that the actual strengthening was always greater than the theoretical predictions. Thus, Fisher, Hart, and pry3 modified the Orowan theory by suggesting that the Orowan process took place in the microstrain region preceding macroscopic yielding and the subsequent, rapid work hardening in the form of residual dislocation loops around the particles largely determined the observed macroscopic yield point. The F-H-P theory stated that the increment of strengthening due to the work-hardening mechanism was proportional to f3/2 where f is the volume fraction of the precipitate. F-H-P used data by Shaw, Shepard, Starr, and Dorn4 on A1 3-5 pct Cu to support their theory. Roberts, Carruthers, and Averbach5 were the first to make a microstrain study of dispersion strengthening, and they found that for steel the Gensamer relationship was obeyed. Hayman and Nutting6 suggested that in the case of tempered steel 1) the ferrite grain boundary was the primary obstacle and 2) the carbide particles simply formed part of the grain boundary obstacles. They found that the strength varied as G"" where G is the ferrite grain size. Turkalo and LOW' determined the structure of quenched and tempered plain carbon steel using a replica technique; they concluded that the carbide particles did not necessarily lie in the ferrite grain boundaries. When they defined the mean free-ferrite path as being determined by both particles and the ferrite path boundaries, their data obeyed the Gensamer relationship. Meiklejohn and skoda8 showed that the strengthening from iron particles in mercury was a function of the particle size and the distance between particles. Dew-Hughes9 explained the Meiklejohn and Skoda results by the following theory: 1) grown-in dislocations which surrounded the particles were produced by the thermal stresses during the time the material was cooled to the testing temperature, and 2) the observed strengthening was associated with the cutting of the grown-in dislocations by the glide dislocations. Ansell and Lenel10 proposed a theory in which the glide dislocations pile-up or surround the particle until the number of dislocations in the pile-up is sufficient to yield or fracture the particle. This petroleum-engineering study of the Healdton oil field in Carter County, Okla., describes the geology and production history of that field and estimates the oil reserves that could be produced by efficient secondary-recovery methods. The Healdton field, in western Carter County approximately 20 miles west of Ardmore, Okla., was discovered in 1913 and was one of the early important oil-producing areas in the State. Although the volume of oil recovered from the Healdton sands has been comparatively high, studies show that a large reserve remains in the pressure-depleted sand, which can be recovered by efficient water-flood operations. In making this study of the Healdton-sand reservoir, the writers utilized many data already available in company and Government offices. Most of the fluid samples were collected by Bureau of Mines personnel and analyzed in the Bureau's laboratories at Bartlesville, Okla.; but other data, including logs, core analyses, and production records, were obtained from outside sources. These data were examined critically but were not verified, and possible errors in the original data may be reflected in the conclusions. In this study, attempts were made to consider only those aspects of the available information that would contribute to a clear and concise engineering report on the Healdton-sand reservoir. Other phases of the data, as well as those concerning associated reservoirs, were eliminated from consideration as being irrelevant to the particular problem. Cores and drill cuttings of the Healdton sands were analyzed and studied to determine the nature of the reservoir rocks. Analyses of samples of produced oil, water, and gas were studied to fix the different types, the limits of their occurrence, and the suitability of different waters for injection into the Healdton sands. Records of oil, gas, and water produced and of gas and water injected were studied to interpret the production behavior of the field and of certain individual leases. Theoretical calculations were made to predict the probable water-flood behavior and oil recovery, at constant water-injection rates, for individual sands on two leases.

A mineral survey of a portion of the Lake Eleanor RARE II area (No. 5807), Trinity County, California, was done by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Approximately 8,650 acres (3,500 ha) of the Lake Eleanor RARE II area not examined for this report had been previously investigated by U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey personnel and published as part of USGS Bulletin 1371-B, (Hotz, 1972) Mineral Resources of the Salmon-Trinity Alps Primitive Area, California. The report showed that the section included in the rake Eleanor RARE II area contained no metallic mineral resources. Geochemical sampling indicated that the Lake Eleanor RARE II area contains no potentially important mineral resources. About 4,650 acres (1,880 ha) of the eastern part of Lake Eleanor RARE II area were examined for this report. The Bureau of Mines was responsible for detailed examination and sampling of mines, prospects, and mineralized zones; the Geological Survey conducted geological, geochemical, and geophysical studies of the area. This area is underlain mainly by granitic rock and serpentinite.

Oxides of sulphur are corrosive and are produced when sulphur-containing fuels are burned. Sulphur dioxide (SO2) is a colourless gas with a characteristic, irritating, pungent odour. Exposure routes to the human body are mainly through inhalation and skin and/or eye contact. Symptoms of exposure to SO2 may include irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat; rhinorrhea (discharge of thin nasal mucous); choking; cough; and reflex bronchoconstriction. To protect employees against the ill health effects of SO2 exposure, they are often required to make use of respiratory protection whenever entering areas were the SO2 levels exceed the statutory limits. The use of respiratory protective equipment should always be a last resort and should be considered only after other control measures have failed to reduce occupational exposure levels to below the occupational exposure limit or whilst other control measures are being investigated or implemented. Whenever the use of respiratory protection equipment is considered, it should always be used as part of a comprehensive respiratory protection plan. It is also extremely important that all potentially exposed persons are adequately and comprehensively informed and trained.

El presente texto analiza la crisis económica y su relación con el Banco Minero. Para ello, se revisa las dos últimas recesiones económicas que tuvo el Banco entre 1975 y 1982, donde la crisis se agudizó por una caída en los precios de los metales y una inflación de costos que no pudo ser transmitida al precio de venta. Como consecuencia de ello, las empresas mineras que tuvieron préstamos, acusaron pérdidas en sus ejercicios e incumplieron en el pago de sus obligaciones. Como medida anti-crisis, el Banco Minero estableció comisiones de alto nivel para evaluar las situaciones y recomendar la dación de dispositivos legales que permitieron asistir a los Pequeños y Medianos mineros en la restitución de liquidez mediante préstamos sobre liquidaciones a precios deprimidos, Asimismo, generó la consolidación, refinanciación y moratoria de los clientes que estaban en suspensión de pagos de las obligaciones contraídas con el Banco Minero y la creación de líneas de crédito especiales para la Pequeña Minería.

"Physical models for acoustic emission (AE) are introduced and expressions are derived to predict AE activity from such parameters as applied stress, strain and strain-rate. These models are then incorporated into a visco-plastic finite-element simulation program, and the acoustic emission event rate generated during metal forming operations are predicted. Simulation results are presented for upsetting operations on a typical C-Mn type steel for various friction and die geometry conditions. The AE model predictions compare well with the limited available experimental results reported in the literature and demonstrate that AE signatures can be reliably simulated. The signatures predicted for metal forging are fairly insensitive to processing parameter changes. This suggests that AE event rate monitoring may not be well suited to process monitoring for forging. However, the size of the features is conjectured to influence the frequency content of the AE signals. Thus, since current simulations include only the ability to predict the number of events for a set of processing conditions, future work is required to simulate the duration and magnitude of acoustic events. Fourier analysis techniques may then be applied to investigate correlation with microstructural features.IntroductionThe open loop control system method for deformation processing design, as described by Malas et al. [1 ], consists of several steps in series to achieve the final design. The first step uses microstructure development models to determine the optimum deformation path to achieve the desired final microstructure. The second step, the process model, calculates the processing parameters required to achieve this deformation path. In this study, coke oven tar additions over a range of 0?8 wt.% were evaluated as a possible substitute for imported coal fractions. The coke oven tar used was collected from tar decanters in the byproducts section of the coking plant. The moisture content in the tar varied depending on the residence time and water carryover from the coke oven tar separators to the storage tanks. Moisture contents of 1 wt.%, 3 wt.%, and 6 wt.% were investigated in order to evaluate the effect on coal blend, carbonization, and coke properties. At 6 wt.% moisture content with 6 wt.% coke oven tar, although the coke quality improved the yield showed a 4% decrease. On the other hand, 1 wt.% moisture content with coke oven tar of 6 wt.%, increased the yield by 1% and the coke quality improved. However, the latter process was characterized by an excessive increase in wall pressure and pushing energy, both of which are detrimental to the oven walls. The optimum moisture content in coke oven tar was found to be 3 wt.% with a coke oven tar addition of 6 wt.% in the coal blend. With these conditions, the coke properties improved and wall pressure and pushing energy were acceptable. However, a decrease in coke yield of up to 2% was observed. Despite this, coke oven tar addition is considered to be a viable option based upon economic factors of a reduction in the quantity and cost of imported coking coals that is required to achieve the same optimum final coke product.
