Blast-induced ground vibrations from surface coal mine, quarry, and construction blasting were measured and analyzed for frequency content and duration characteristics. Eighteen commercially available ground vibration measurement systems were evaluated in the field and laboratory for linearity, accuracy, and crosstalk. Buried, surface, and sandbagged transducer placement methods were compared, along with peak and vector-sum measurements. The recommended minimum frequency ranges for ground vibration instrumentation are 2 to 150 Hz for coal mine and quarry blasting, and 5 to 200 Hz for construction and excavation blasting. When higher or lower frequency vibrations are possible, as in construction blasting or for a quarry shot close to a residence, care should be taken to insure proper choices of instrumentation and vibration criteria. Several instruments operating in these ranges are available, and all but one of the seismographs tested fell within ±3-dB accuracy limits (+41 pct, -29 pct). Waveform recordings of all three ground vibration components are recommended as the peak amplitude and frequency may vary among the three. Peak or vector-sum readings are adequate if only amplitude levels are desired. The soil density matched box should be anchored or buried, particularly for high-frequency, high-amplitude construction blasting.

An effective and efficient speed control of AC motors requires the control of AC voltage and frequency. In the federal state of North Rhine Westphalia (Germany) small and medium sized companies are beginning to extract the related gas via old shafts or boreholes and to use it as a source for the production of electricity and heat. More than 100 applications for the separate mining right on mine gas had already been filed by beginning of 2002, since mine gas is treated as a mineral resource under the Federal Mining Law. Meanwhile more than 40 mine gas concessions have been granted and first projects are being developed with encouraging results so far. To enhance the applied techniques and their efficiency Aachen University has formed a research team in this discipline. Scope and goals of this research activities are being presented in this paper. High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) technology has been evaluated to replace tertiary cone crushing at Coeur Rochester operations (Coeur Rochester, Inc.) as an opportunity to improve silver recovery. In 2016 and 2017, onsite and third-party pilot programs were initiated to evaluate the impact of metallurgical recovery and heap leach performance of crushed product generated by an HPGR. In 2018, Forte Dynamics evaluated the HPGR laboratory metallurgical data from Coeur Rochester and all third parties to develop field-scale leach curves based on new crushing scenarios. The laboratory recovery test work data was consolidated and scaled to field conditions to determine projected heap leach performance. Based on the metallurgical testing conducted, the replacement of current tertiary cone crushers with HPGR technology has the potential to increase Coeur Rochester’s silver recovery rate by 8%, from 61% to 69%, and shorten the overall timing of silver recoveries from 20 years to just over two years. INTRODUCTION The Rochester mine, and associated valley fill heap leach facilities is an open-pit silver and gold mine located in Pershing County, Nevada, approximately 26 miles northeast of the city of Lovelock. In 2017, Rochester produced approximately 4.7M troy oz silver (Ag) and 51k troy oz gold (Au). Ore mined at Rochester is either fed directly to the primary X-Pit crusher, crushed at an in-pit crusher system, or placed directly onto a heap leach pad as run-of-mine (ROM). Both crushing circuits are comprised of three stages of crushing to produce a nominal 3/8” ore. Primary crushing consists of jaw crushing while secondary and tertiary crushing are composed of varying cone crushers. Historical recovery rates of crushed Rochester ore average 61.4% Ag and 95.9% Au over a period of 20 years [1]. These rates were derived from third party verification of in-house metallurgical test results, crusher production and heap leach production results from 1986 through 2004 in a private report for Rochester produced by KD Engineering Co., Inc. Recovery rates are regularly verified by compositing daily samples of ore delivered to each leach pad from the X-pit crusher, in-pit crusher, and/or ROM. A proportionate split of each sample is used to generate monthly composites for metallurgical analysis utilizing column leaching and bottle roll leaching. These tests are run in a manner analogous with production conditions and deliver test results that provide expected heap leach performance. As the Rochester oxide deposit has been mineralogically and metallurgically consistent, the gold and silver recovery trends have also been consistent over the life of the project. In 2016 and 2017, onsite and third-party pilot programs were initiated to evaluate the impact of HPGR technology to metallurgical recovery and heap leach performance of crushed product in an open circuit configuration, as a potential replacement for the currently in place tertiary cone crushers. During these years, HPGR was evaluated in three phases of test work.

This bulletin covers all mines in the United States that were operated in 1936 to produce metallic ores and all mines that were operated to produce nonmetallic minerals other than coal, stone, sand, gravel, or their products. Reports from mine operators revealed a better safety record for fatal accidents in 1936 than in any other year except 1934 during the 26 years for which annual surveys of accidents in the mineral industries of the United States have been conducted by the Bureau of Mines. On the other hand, the record for nonfatal injuries, although better in 1936 than in any year prior to 1930, was not as good as it was from 1930 to 1935, inclusive.

The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) is a practical rock mass classification system for use in design of mine openings. Data can be obtained for this purpose from exploration drill cores if simple geotechnical logging and rock mechanics testing is conducted. The CMRR is an excellent method to quantify rock characteristics for engineering purposes. It bridges the gap between geologic description and engineering design. The CMRR was utilized in the design of a 10,000 fl. long coal belt conveyor tunnel connecting an Eastern Associated Coal Corp. mine and preparation plant in Boone County, West Virginia. Data gathering and analysis techniques are discussed involving the calculation of the CMRR and its application in the design of the tunnel, which was driven through a thin coal bed zone. The preliminary findings have correlated well with actual roof and mining conditions encountered during driving the tunnel and it is concluded the CMRR is an effective method to utilize geologic data from exploration core holes for engineering analysis and design.

The development of a laboratory and pilot-scale high-tension electrostatic flowsheet for the production of iron-ore super concentrates having silica contents in the range of 0.1% is presented, A variety of hematite and magnetite ores were tested with this flowsheet, and the pertinent metallurgical data are given. The applications and limitations of this process are brought out in terms of both practical and theoretical considerations. There have been many new developments in the past few years that have required mineral beneficiation engineers to consider new techniques for iron-ore concentration. Developments in iron powder metallurgy, and particularly the making of sheet metal directly from high-purity iron-ore concentrates, and the concept of using metallized pellets as a substitute for scrap in electric-furnace steelmaking have created demands for what is commonly referred to as iron-ore superconcen-trates. In most cases, specifications for superconcentrates are that they contain less than 0.1% total gangue, with some applications requiring less than 0.05% gangue. To produce these concentrates, new and modified processes are being developed, and the three methods receiving attention as the primary concentrating methods are: 1) Magnetic separation in which dry rotor-type equipment is used for magnetite and the high-intensity magnets are used for hematite. 2) Amine flotation. 3) "High-tension" electrostatic separation (or, elec-trodynamic concentration). This paper examines the high-tension electrostatic process in terms of its limitations and abilities for the production of iron-ore superconcentrates. A technically effective and simple flowsheet was developed through laboratory and 5 and 100-ton pilot-plant studies for the production of concentrates containing from 0.02 to 0.20% SiO, with iron recoveries between 85 and 90%. The process is also shown to be economically feasible. Laboratory Test Program Separation Characteristics: The suitability of the electrostatic high-tension method for iron-ore supercon-centration stems from the fundamental mechanism governing the process, i.e., particles are separated on the basis of differences in electrical conductivities. This conductivity is a characteristic property of minerals, and if the difference between the conductivities of two min- erals is great enough, then their separation can be performed by a high-tension machine. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the critical factor is the time necessary for the particle charge density, which is established by a corona discharge field, to decay to a level such that the centrifugal force acting on the particle exceeds its electrostatic, or image, force. At this point, the particle can leave the rotor at some trajectory and fall into an appropriate product receptacle. This decay time is directly proportional to electrical conductivity, and the process variables, such as feed rate, rotor speed, electrode configuration, and rotor composition, are selected to optimize the ability of the separator to resolve different conductivities. Table 1 lists the measured conductivities for some of the iron and gangue minerals used in developing the flowsheet. These results were obtained by using the conductivity cell described by Lawver and Wright.' In exploiting the ultra-deep, narrow reef ore bodies of the Witwatersrand, the ventilation and cooling systems within the stopes play a critical role because of high concentrations of active workers. This paper examines the heat, ventilation and cooling effects of a number of different stoping layouts for narrow reef mining in ultra-deep operations in very hot rock. The stope ventilation and cooling needs are driven primarily by the difference between the air temperature and that of the rock front being excavated. These needs depend on the face utilization, geometry, face advance (rate and direction), layout, backfill, use of water and machinery1,2,3. Detailed studies of different stoping configurations have been undertaken for mining operations extending to depths of 5000m below surface, where virgin rock temperatures approach 70°C. Extensive work has been completed with regard to evaluating ventilation and cooling requirements to maintain air reject temperatures of 28°C wet-bulb and better. This knowledge is being used to determine overall cooling requirements, reduce operational costs and maximize the efficiency of cooling systems. These issues are important when considering both the local and regional air conditioning systems and the most effective application of in-stope chilled water.

Focusing on relationships between severity measure versus productivity and other factors, this paper presents a comprehensive study of injuries for U.S. underground coal mines in 1996 by mine size. Based on analyses of data, generally the larger the mine, the more productive it is (in tons per employee-hour), but the more severe is its injury experience (r = 0.65). Within very large, large, and medium mine sizes, however, the more productive the mine, the less severe is its injury experience (r =-0.43, -0.36, and -0.26, respectively). For small and very small mines, a more deeply nested analysis is required to understand relationships. Other interesting relationships and comparisons are presented.

Titanium (ilmenite) concentrate was extracted from a New Zealandilmeno-magnetite deposit. Tailings from the existing processing line at the Waikato North Head ironsand concentration plant were used as a raw material feed. The titanium bearing mineral extracted was defined as intergrowths of ilmenite and hematite in the size range below 150 um. The Owen-Honda equation was used to determine the conditions forilmenite/hematite magnetic separation. Three distinct regions of magnetic field strength for the mineral separation have been defined. Theoretical estimates from this calculation have been confirmed experimentally. Ilmenite concentrate was obtained using medium field magnetic andelectrostatic separation. The final material contains 40.6 - 42 per cent TiO2 and 39.1 - 39.8 per cent Fe (total). The actual yield from extraction was about seven per cent of the Zircon, leucoxene and monazite were found as byproducts of thetitanium concentration process. Preliminary experiments have shown the viability of industrial zircon benefication.

An epithermal gold-silver deposit is presently being developed at the Golden Cross Mine in the Waitekauri Valley, 8 km northwest of Waihi, New Zealand. Highest grade mineralisation underground is mainly confined to an elongate zone of strongly banded quartz veining on the hangingwall. Footwall veining is irregular, flatter lying, and of lower grade. Hydrothermal breccias in the ore zone may have economic grades where clasts of vein quartz are present. Jigsaw breccias, shingle breccias, and layered breccias with sedimentary type structures such as layering, crossbedding, and graded bedding have been identified proximal to, and within, quartz veins. Mineralisation in the open pit occurs in and adjacent to stockwork quartz veining.   Three alteration zones are recognised: a central silicic zone enclosing Au-Ag bearing quartz veins, an argillic zone above the stockwork zone and in the footwall of the underground ore zone, and a propylitic zone which is gradational with argillic zone. Intense shearing is confined to the less competent argillic zone.   Precious metal mineralogy consists of electrum (65% Au; 35% Ag) and argentiferous tetrahedrite, polybasite, pyrargyrite, argentite, and native silver. Pyrite is the dominant sulphide mineral. Marcasite, arsenopyrite, and rare chalcopyrite and sphalerite also occur. Oxidation ranges from a few metres in the argillic western stockwork zone to 100 m in fractured rock in the footwall of the stockwork.   The open pit contains a proved and probable reserve of 2.1 million tonne grading 3.5 g/t Au and 17 g/t Ag. The underground mine will produce 2.7 million tonne grading 7.8g/t Au and 27g/t Ag.

No minerals have been produced from the McGraw Creek RARE II area. During the 1982 U.S. Bureau of Mines study, there were no active mines in the area. Limestone occurrences (fig. 1, no. 2), four copper prospects (fig. 1, no. 1, 4, 5, 6), and a prospect with no significant mineral values (fig. 1, no. 3) were examined. A moderate potential for high-calcium limestone resources was estimated between ocurrences within the study area near McGraw and Spring Creeks (fig. 1, no. 2). There is low potential for copper resources at the Argenta Prospect (fig. 1., no. 1) in the study area, and the McDougall Prospect adjacent to the area.

WHEN I was asked to prepare, for presentation at the 1938 Annual Meeting of the Institute, some data concerning low-discharge grinding at the Sylvanite mill, it seemed entirely reasonable to expect to have at my disposal the results of at least four full months' operation after the last unit, as then proposed, was installed. Delays in delivery of equipment, nevertheless, shortened the interval, as will be shown herein. In submitting the data contained in this discussion, I wish distinctly to state that the intention is not to claim that final conclusions can be reached at this time concerning our operation. Test periods, in certain instances at least, have been too short for this purpose, although some, where so stated, have been extended through March and April. It is hoped, however, that an advantageous trend in practice can be shown and that the experience related may be of interest to others who are now operating, or who are considering the operation of, low-discharge grinding mills. In the plant under review, four mills are in use: one primary and three secondary. Present mill capacity (grinding, as shown by screen test, about 99 per cent through-200-mesh and approximately 88 to 89 per cent minus-325-mesh with infrasizer giving about 90 per cent of the latter) averages about 525 tons per day. A brief description of each unit will be given and comments will also be made relating to operation. This will be followed by certain test data from which, in conclusion, operating results are summarized.

THE INVESTIGATION of barrier pillars in the Southern field is part of the comprehensive study of the mine water problem in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania by the Federal Bureau of Mines (1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18).4 Tim Southern field is in Carbon, Schuylkill, Dauphin, and Lebanon Counties, in eastern Pennsylvania; has an area of 200 square miles; is 70 miles long from Mauch Chunk on the east to the Susquehanna River on the west; and is 1 to 6 miles wide. In the Southern field are 37 underground water pools containing 37312 billion gallons of water (5). Most of these pools overflow to the surface because the barrier pillars controlling them are effective under existent, conditions. Abandonment of mines in the Southern field has resulted in the hooding of 34 percent of the field. The largest tonnage of reserves of anthracite lies in this field, where mining conditions are most difficult. Large reserves of anthra¬cite underlie the abandoned mine workings, and before a great part of these reserves can be developed and extracted, the abandoned workings must be unwatered and kept drained (5).

Ti(C,N)-based cermets offer good high temperature strength, perfect chemical stability, excellent wear resistance, and relativly better machinability. In the present work, the tribological behaviors of Ti(C,N)/SiC sliding pairs lubricated in water and seawater were evaluated using a ball-on-disk tribometer. The experimental results show that a relatively low friction coefficient (about 0.025) can be obtained when lubricated with artificial seawater at the sliding speed of 200 mm/s, while the date is about 0.2 in purified water. The wear surface profiles and the lubricants collected after running-in process for the high/low friction conditions were compared. In addition, the effect of salt molar concentration of the lubricant on the Ti(C,N)/SiC friction properties was investigated. It was found that the smooth and flat surface is the premise to gain the low friction. At the same time, the proper concentration of silica colloid, which is affected by the salt ions, is also an essential one. Moreover, the high sliding speed (200 mm/s) is beneficial to achieve low friction.

Lump ore is one of the key ferrous materials used in the blast furnace ironmaking process, typically accounting for 5–25 per cent of the blast furnace ferrous burden. Like other ferrous materials, the characteristics of lump ore have an important impact on stable operation and productivity of a blast furnace. As the cold burden lands on the top of the hot burden in the furnace and descends, it is inevitably subjected to thermal shock, which will likely lead to breakdown of the lump particles, or decrepitation and affect the gas permeability inside the blast furnace adversely. An ISO decrepitation test has therefore been developed to assess this behaviour of lump ore. However, the results obtained according to the existing standard decrepitation test method vary considerably between laboratories even for the same lump ore. To improve the test procedure of the existing decrepitation test, this paper first discusses the mechanisms leading to decrepitation and then studies the factors affecting lump ore decrepitation. Understanding the key factors affecting lump ore decrepitation is particularly important to improve the existing test procedure that enables researchers to achieve a higher degree of precision when conducting the decrepitation test.CITATION:Lu, L, Adam, M, Hapugoda, S and Kilburn. The Asia and the Pacific region has large mineral resources of antimony, barite, bauxite, bismuth, copper, fluorspar, gold, graphite, iron ore, magnesite, mica, rare earths, salt, talc and pyrophyllite, titanium, zinc, and zirconium. The region overall lacks large resources of oil and natural gas, but it has large resources of anthracite and bituminous coal. In terms of exploitation, many minerals, metals, and fuel are produced in significant quantities in the Asia and the Pacific region as shown in table 1. Collectively, the area accounts for a substantial amount of the world production of antimony, barite, bauxite, fluorspar, gold, graphite, ilmenite and rutile, iodine, iron ore, lead, magnesite, manganese, nickel, salt, tin, tungsten, and zinc. Total coal production of the region exceeds 1.6 billion metric tons. The production of bituminous coal accounts for more than 80 % of the total output. China is the region's largest coal producer, with an output of almost 1.1 billion tons. Other major producers are Australia and India. The combined production by Australia, China, and India is more than 1.5 billion tons or 93 % of the area's output. The remainder of the coal output in the region comes from Afghanistan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, the Korean peninsula, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Taiwan. The production of crude oil throughout the Asia and Pacific region is close to 2.4 billion barrels. China and Indonesia together account for 67 % of the total output. The remainder of the output is primarily from Australia, Brunei, India, and Malaysia. Indonesia is the largest producer of natural gas in the region with an output of close to 58 billion cubic meters, followed by Malaysia and Australia with 23 and 22 billion cubic meters, respectively. Other producers in the region of lesser stature by output include Brunei, China, India, and Pakistan.
