A paper presenting an overview of legislative and best practice approaches to the management of OHS&E and business risk for Australian tunnelling operations. Best practice can be achieved in Australian tunnelling through ærisk awarenessÆ by decision-makers and line personnel. This will identify problems before they occur and lead to implementing controls appropriate to avoiding loss throughout the life cycle of the underground opening. The author draws on legislative approaches from all Australian states together with practical experience from risk management and risk engineering work from six recent tunnelling projects. This describes a process that:commences with concept risk assessment,involves quantification of major hazards,conducts assessments of operating risks, andleads to implementation of an integrated management system that keeps construction activities connected with the controls identified in the design and planning phases and minimises the losses sustained as a result. Key points addressed include:where the industry is going with respect to risk û methods and considerations,how tunnelling risks are perceived by the industry and legislation,how tunnel constructors and owners can minimise exposure by using proper risk engineering ætoolsÆ, andreflections on best practice methods for transferring knowledge from designers to contractors/operators.

This work was done to develop methods for increasing the yields and purity of vanadium prepared by bomb reduction of vanadium compounds . Compounds reduced were V₂ 05 , V203 , VC , and VC13 . Sodium , calcium , and magnesium were used as reductants . Variables considered included reductant form , bomb size , pressure during reaction , method of ignition , and the use of slag fluidizing additives . It was concluded that yields of 85 to 90 percent can be effected by the calcium reduction of V205 in reactors measuring as much as 14 inches in diameter and 60 inches in height . Optimum charge composition included V₂05 , 65 percent excess calcium , and 0.4 moles sulfur per mole vanadium . Purity of the vanadium produced in large reactors varied from 99.5 to 99.8 percent . The higher purity metal , depending upon the amounts of interstitial impurities present , was usually cold ductile . Although high yields of up to 99.5 percent can be effected by bomb reduction of VC1 , the high pressures developed in the bombs and attack of the reactor walls by the byproduct chloride slags discourages this method of preparing vanadium . It was found that significant purification of impure regulus metal occurred when it was hydrided , crushed , acid leached , and vacuum dehydrided . Metal so treated can readily be converted to ductile sheet . A cost estimate based on the production of 100 tons of vanadium per year was prepared . It was concluded that pure ductile vanadium could be produced for approximately $ 20.00 per pound .

During the summer of 1946, the Division of Geophysical Exploration of the U.S. Bureau of Mines established several primary magnetic base stations near important iron-producing districts in Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Stations were located in groups of four to six in six separate base-station areas, and each position was marked with a concrete monument. Differences in magnetic intensity between stations in these areas, as well as the difference between each area and a magnetic datum at the magnetic observatory of the Coast and Geologic Survey at Cheltenham, Md., were measured with a modified Askania magnetometer. Measurements also were made with a Hotchkiss superdip to study the usefulness of the stations for the calibration of instruments of this type. The work was planned and supervised by F. W. Lee, chief of the Division of Geophysical Exploration, and Edward F. Fitzhugh, Jr., chief of the Minneapolis Division of the Bureau of Mines. Special mention is due Harold B. Ewoldt, Bureau of Mines engineer, for his assistance in the field work, especially in locating and establishing monuments. Special mention also is due Clyde L. Holmberg, of the Bureau of Mines, for the magnetic measurements made with the Hotchkiss superdip. Helpful suggestions were received in the field from H. L. James, of the U. S. Geological Survey. The variation of the spectral emissivity of osmium and ruthenium with temperature can be expressed by the following relations: DURING a study of the sintering characteristics of osmium and ruthenium, discrepancies in the previously accepted melting points of the metals were noted. The melting temperatures had not been measured at the time of the work, but were estimated in the literature as 2700°C for osmium and 2450°C for ruthenium.' A recent investigation by Baird2 has shown the melting temperatures of osmium and ruthenium are 3000" and 2250° C, respectively. In the present work, osmium bars sintered at temperatures as high as 2900° C showed no evidence of melting, whereas ruthenium showed definite evidence of melting at temperatures as low as 2250°C. In view of the apparent discrepancies, the melting temperatures of both metals were determined. The spectral emissivities of both metals were determined as an aid to studies of the sintering characteristics of these metals. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES The materials used in these studies were metal powders supplied by Englehard Industries, Inc., through the courtesy of The International Nickel Co. Analytical data from three laboratories, although not in complete agreement as to the purity of the material or the major impurity elements, indicated that the maximum impurity levels were 0.5 and 1.0 wt pct in osmium and ruthenium, respectively. The metal powders were pressed to 1/4 by 1/4 by 6-in. bars at 20Tsi using carbon tetrachloride as a lubricant. The pressed bars were presintered 1 hr at 1200°C after heating 1 hr at 400°C. The presintered densities of the several bars of the metals ranged from 65 to 80 pct of ideal density. Specimens were self-resistance heated in a vacuum sintering bell. Temperatures were measured with an L&N, disappearing filament optical pyrometer. True temperatures were read at the base of an 0.30-in.-diam, 0.150-in. deep hole drilled into the center of a presintered bar. Apparent temperatures were read from the surface of the bar adjacent to the hole. MELTING POINT DETERMINATION The melting temperature of the metals was determined as the temperature at which a slight additional increase in current through the specimen resulted in a reduced temperature at the base of the hole. MORE and more attention is being paid to the bonding of metals in their solid states. For a better understanding of this technique for joining metals and how it is affected by changes in temperature, pressure, and time at temperature and pressure, a detailed report concerning nickel to aluminum bonding has been published.' In order to broaden the knowledge accrued, some additional work concerning solid state joining of aluminum to copper and aluminum to zirconium was performed. The investigation of the Al-Cu system was considerably more extensive than the investigation of the Al-Zr system. For the A1-Cu system, not only were tensile sudies made but intermetallic penetration rate investigations also were carried out. The effect of temperature on intermetallic penetration rate for the A1-Cu system was determined at 11 tsi pressure, held 2 min. Procedure Apparatus: The hot pressing technique was the means of solid state reaction used and required the equipment depicted in Fig. 1. The following procedure was involved: The two metals to be reacted were placed in an aquadag-lubricated 18-4-1 tool steel die, 16 in. high by 1.440 in. ID, between punches of 1.366 in. diam made of the same material. A thermocouple well was located in the die body 3½ in. down from the top of the die, while another well was located centrally in the bottom punch 8½ in. from the bottom of the die. This die assembly was located in three cylindrical ceramic heating furnaces placed in tandem. Each furnace was controlled individually by a Variac power transformer. In turn, the die and furnaces were placed in a water-cooled stainless steel pot which could be evacuated. A cover, which contained a centrally located Wilson seal with an 18-4-1 1 in. diam ram running through it, was bolted on the pot. After sealing, the pot was evacuated by a roughing pump to 200 microns pressure, after which a diffusion pump was used to bring the pressure down to 5 to 15 u. At this pressure, the furnaces were turned on. As soon as they started to heat, out-gassing of the entire unit raised the pressure to 30 to 400 p. By the time the specimens were at temperature ready to be pressed, approximately 4/2 hr, the vacuum pumps had re-established the 5 to 15 u pressure. Once the desired temperature was reached, the required pressure was applied for a predetermined length of time to the 1 in. ram, through to the top punch, and to the specimen. When the time for keeping the specimen under pressure had elapsed, the pressure was released, the energizing coil current turned off, and the assembly allowed to cool. After cooling, the die was removed from the pot and the specimen was ejected. Specimen Preparation: Two different types of specimens were made for this investigation. One was for subsequent tensile testing, while the other was for determination of intermetallic alloy zone penetration into the parent metals. Tensile Bars—Commercially rolled copper pieces in. thick or zirconium sheet pieces 1/32 in. thick and 1.366 in. diam were placed between commercial 2-S aluminum rod 1 in. thick and 1.366 in. diam. This sandwich in turn was slipped into a 2-S aluminum sleeve 1.438 in. OD and 1.370 in. ID. This sleeve lined the couple up and prevented the aquadag lubricant from getting in between either the A1-Cu or Al-Zr interfaces. Immediately prior to the specimen assembly, the copper or zirconium was abraded on the flat surfaces with 320 grit silicon carbide paper, producing clean smooth surfaces. The aluminum was chemically cleaned just before assembly by: l—degrease in acetone, 2—distilled water rinse, 3—immersion for 3 min in 5 pct NaOH at 70" to 80°C, 4—distilled water rinse, 5—immersion for 2 min in 50 pct HNO3 solution at room temperature, 6—distilled water rinse, and 7—drying in a blast of gas. After the A1-Cu sandwiches were hot pressed and ejected, the specimens were machined such that the aluminum sleeve was removed, and the remaining aluminum was then threaded; the bar so produced was tested later for tensile strength. In all the instances where Al-Cu couples were tested, the specimens broke during the test at the Cu-A1 interface and never within the aluminum or copper. The ultimate tensile strength values at times showed considerable scatter for a set of given reaction conditions. Because of this, as many as three to five specimens were made for a particular set of conditions. The trend of the average tensile strengths obtained was not as conclusive as was the trend of the maximum tensile strengths, the latter values being obtained under optimum reaction conditions. Therefore, the values of ultimate tensile strength given herein are maximums.

At its Port Kembla Plant, Australian Fertilizers Ltd. manufactures Superphosphate and other Phosphatic Fertilizers.Phosphate Rock is received from Nauru and Ocean Island. It contains water insoluble tri-calcium phosphate, Ca3(PO4), to an average of about 86%.It is crushed to pass a 20-mesh x 26-gauge woven wire screen, and is then treated with Sulphuric Acid to give the product Superphosphate with a water solubie prosphate content of 20.5%, estimated as P205. Sulphuric Acid is made by the chamber process. Three sets of chambers are installed, on,e five-chamber set of timber frame work construction and the other two of more recent date, each with four chambers of steel frame work construction. A fourth chamber set is now being built.Sulphuric Acid is delivered for use. at about 70% H2S04, the strength depending upon the rock used.Mixing - The crushed rock and sulphuric acid are mixed in weighed and measured proportions respectiyely in one-ton batches in revolving cast fron pans, mechanically stirred. The mixture, while still slurry, is run into a closed horizontal concrete cylinder (den) where, with the completion of the chemical reaction, it rapidly sets as Superphosphate.Approximately fifty batches are required to fill a den. When full, the den is opened ana the mass cut out by a revolving cutter. The product is elevated and conveyed to any required position in the Superphosphate storage shed, where it dries and matures.Despatch - As required, the Superphosphate is excavated by a two ton grab and conveyed from the matured "dump" to bagging units where it is disintegrated, screened and bagged at twelve bags to the ton. The filled !Jags are closed by machine and delivered to railway trucks immediately.Mixed Fertilizers - Sulphate of Ammonia, Sulphate and Muriate, of Potash, and Blood and Bone are mixed with Superphosphate and thoroughly incorporated to give different mixtures to meet special plant requirements.

"Red Dog is one of the largest zinc mines in the world both in terms of reserves and annual production. In 2013, Red Dog produced 551,300 mt of contained zinc and 96,700 mt of contained lead. The mine, which is located in Northwest Alaska, is a partnership between Teck Alaska Incorporated, the operator of the mine and NANA Regional Corporation Inc, the local land owner. The Aqqaluk deposit, which is the current source of ore, has an average grade of 15.8% Zn, 4.1% Pb and 73 g/t Ag with the main minerals being sphalerite, galena, pyrite, barite and quartz. Surveys of the zinc flotation circuit at Red Dog identified that a substantial amount of fully liberated, sub 20 micron sphalerite particles were being lost to final tailings. As a means of improving fine sphalerite recovery, a four month plant trial of magnetic conditioning was conducted in the zinc retreat circuit. Magnetic conditioning technology has already been commissioned in several concentrators around the world to agglomerate fine paramagnetic minerals, increasing their probability of bubble collision and recovery in a flotation cell. The results of the four month plant trial at Red Dog showed that at a high level of confidence, a 1% increase in zinc recovery or zinc recovery and zinc concentrate grade combined was achieved with magnetic conditioning. The resulting economic benefit, which is also at a high level of confidence, is significant to Red Dog and therefore, magnetic conditioning has been permanently incorporated into the Red Dog zinc flotation circuit.IntroductionRed Dog is the largest zinc mine in North America and represents approximately 29% of North American zinc concentrate production. The mine is located in northwest Alaska, approximately 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle and 50 miles inland from the Chukchi Sea. The remote location makes the mine accessible only by air or seasonally by ocean-going barges. With the passing of Dr William Bleloch on 20th June 1991, we lost not only a colleague and a good friend but a man who made a very significant contribution to the industrial development of South Africa. He can rightly be called the father of the ekctrochemical and electro-metallurgical industries in this country, since his ideas and dedicated work were directly responsible for the development of these large industries as we know them today.

More than 11 Moz of Au and 50 Moz of Ag have been produced from epithermal deposits in New Zealand, almost entirely from 50 deposits in the Hauraki goldfield. Since the 1980s, new deposits have been discovered at Waihi (Favona, Trio, Correnso) and nearby at Golden Cross. Feasibility studies into reopening the Talisman mine at Karangahake are continuing, and advanced projects with preliminary inferred resource estimates are reported at Wharekirauponga, Neavesville and Muirs. In the Taupo Volcanic Zone, 11 prospects have been drilled, resulting in the definition of large but low-grade Au-Ag resources at Ohakuri. In Northland, several Au, Ag and/or Hg prospects are known, and small quantities of Ag and Hg have been mined. Six prospects have had some drilling, with the most advanced exploration at Puhipuhi. The application of Taupo Volcanic Zone geothermal systems research to the modelling of former hydrothermal mineralising processes in some epithermal prospects has enabled better targeting of exploration.CITATION:Christie, A B and Barker, R G, 2015. This investigation (in five parts) extends the theory of sample reliability from a sample consisting of a fixed number of items to a sample consisting of a fixed amount of items. Examples of a fixed amount of items per sample are samples consisting of a fixed weight or a fixed volume of unequal size particles. The extension of the theory is confirmed by experimental laboratory sampling using standard procedures. The probability distribution functions (the binomial, hypergeometric, multinomial, generalized hypergeometric, and those here called the compound binomial and compound multimomial functions) are developed from fundamentals. Their distributions are generalized to include some measured characteristic of the items. Infinite population moments are derived from moment-generating functions, and finite population moments are developed from corresponding infinite population moments using a newly defined mathematical operation. The first three experimental moments in laboratory sampling to given weights of particles are compared with the theoretical moments of their corresponding compound mult.inomial distributions. The agreement is striking. The study is divided into five parts. Part 1 deals with probability or random sampling to n items and with all sampling to n items per sample from some one probability distribution. This is the area of sampling covered by well-known theory. Accordingly, the procedures may be different but many of the results are well known.

Although grouted piles have been used for several decades since the idea was proposed in the 1970s, their design is mostly based on experience and unpublished proprietary methods. There is little research on grouting drilled shaft tips and even less on grouting shaft sides. This paper presents the analysis of 4 instrumented pile loads tests on base and shaft grouted piles from different sites in Egypt; with emphasis on one of the tests, to demonstrate the analysis process. The data from the tests are analyzed to model the development of unit side friction (USF) with relative displacement. A numerical model using the finite element software PLAXIS is used to investigate the effect of grouting on the surrounding soil stress state. The paper combines the observations from full scale pile load tests and results from the numerical model to suggest an idealized behavior of side friction development with relative displacement of the grouted part of the shaft. The suggested model considers an envelope of Unit Side Friction (USF) with relative displacement, initially dominated by the grout resistance then at higher relative displacements, the friction with radially pressured soil takes over. The grout provides very high USF values up to a relative displacement of 2mm. Then, the USF drops to a typical pile soil side friction behavior; however, this friction is affected by the contact stress between pile and soil, which significantly increases due to compaction grouting. INTRODUCTION Base and shaft pile grouting has been significantly developing in recent years to accommodate the unfavorable conditions in major projects such as the high loads in high rise building and founding on problematic soil formations. Grouting aims to decrease settlements and increase the capacity of the pile under axial load. The technique is first introduced by Kraft (1974) but gained popularity in the 1980s. Typically there are two types of grouting; compaction, and permeation. Compaction grouting is more common in pile foundations practice, and many researchers have provided case histories of pile load tests on base grouted piles and base and shaft grouted piles (Gouvenot and Gabaix,1975; Stocker, 1983; Ghazali et al., 1988; Fleming, 1993; Kusakabe et al., 1994; Robson and Wahby,1994; Joer and Randolph, 1998; Hamza and Leoni, 1998; Mullins et al. 2000; Littlechild et al., 2000; Suckling and Eager, 2001; Dapp and Mullins, 2002; Ho, 2003; Fu and Zhou, 2003; Brettmann and NeSmith, 2005; Ruiz, 2005; Mullins, 2006; Dapp and Brown, 2010; Beadman et al., 2012; Nguyen et al., 2013; Miller et al., 2013; Sinnreich and Simpson, 2015; Hui and Lin, 2015). Compaction grouting is meant to densify the soil around the pile and below the base rather than permeate this soil and increase its cohesion. Research showed that grouting increases the capacity of the piles by a factor of 2~5. The variation in capacity increase depends on pile type, grouting process, and especially grouting pressure. Although there are many case histories of pile load tests on grouted piles but there is no well-defined agreed-upon method to predict grouted pile capacity as typically done in ungrouted piles. Few lab experiments discussed the shaft grouting effects on the soil especially the compaction grouting. The experiments concluded that the compaction grouting forms a homogeneous layer between the pile and the soil, and a residual effective stress is achieved simultaneously with a significant densification of the soil around the pile with noticeable decreasing in void ratio. (Fattahpour et al., 2015; Wang et al., 2015). Recently, studies used numerical analysis to investigate the behavior of the grouted piles and the changes in the surrounding soil (Chiang et al., 2013). The features and benefits of the equipment, along with the use of Dyno Nobel Inc. patented gassed emulsion technology, is summarized in the application of a stope blast with very difficult and complex ground conditions. The paper describes methods used to optimize the amount of energy required to break the ore while protecting the integrity of the surrounding backfilled pillar.

Construction of the new JFK International Airport Light Rail System (LRS) began in 1998 with a pre-construction load test program. This $1.2 billion design-build project consists of approximately 13 kilometers of elevated twin rail. The elevated rail system is supported on nearly 500 piers requiring deep foundations. The presence of underlying compressible and liquefiable soils as well as space constraints precluded the use of large spread footings. In the 1980's the Port Authority undertook extensive testing to evaluate various piles and drilled shafts types. The LRS piling sub-contractor and the Geotechnical Engineer conducted additional tests for this project to identify the most cost effective deep foundation type. Candidate piles types included: Monotube®, Tapertube®, and closed ended pipe piles. The tapered pile types were found to be the most cost effective and the project utilized both the Monotube® and Tapertube® piles. This paper presents the results of the load test program and the issues related to pile driving induced vibrations and ground movement.

"The kaolin deposits of Aiken County, South Carolina (fig. 1), have been worked continuously since 1852. It has been long known that the deposits contain a high percentage of alumina and that large reserves exist. These facts led to the early selection of this area for examination in the search by the Bureau of Mines for high-alumina clays. An exploratory program was started by the Bureau, and drilling was carried on from June 27, 1942, to October 31, 1942.The kaolin-bearing district occupies an area approximately 25 miles long and 11 miles wide, running northeast, with its center at Aiken, S. C. (fig. 1). Within this district, a triangular area bounded by Horse Creek, Silver Bluff Road, and Hamburg Road was roughly prospected by boring 43 machine and 12 hand holes. As a result of the data obtained, a final smaller area was chosen for more systematic prospecting. This area is bounded by Pine Log, Tewkesbury, Silver Bluff, and Craig Sawmill Roads and covers about 4,000 acres.Mineral exploration agreements covering 11,272 acres were signed by 35 property owners, and 11,956 feet was drilled in 200 holes on these properties.The Bureau of Mines exploration work in the district has indicated 19,514,000 short tons of kaolin, of which approximately 10,000,000 tons would average over 35 percent alumina.The tonnages and grades of kaolin developed by this exploration are tabulated below.All grades of this kaolin average approximately 2 percent Fe203 and 1.5 percent Ti02.This project was under the general supervision of J. R. Thoenen, supervising engineer, Non-Metals Mining Section of the Mining Division, Bureau of Mines, until July 1942. The -project was then under the general supervision of E. J. El presente texto señala la aplicación del sistema de gestión de demanda y consumo de energía eléctrica en la fundición de Southern Perú. El sistema está compuesto por un módulo predictor de demanda eléctrica y un módulo de simulación del sistema eléctrico de la planta. El primero, se construyó utilizando redes neuronales con algoritmos de aprendizaje backpropagation, capaz de pronosticar la evolución horaria de la demanda eléctrica con un porcentaje de error cercano. Mientras que el segundo está basado en técnicas de estimación paramétrica, redes neuronales y ecuaciones matemáticas obtenidas por regresión estadística, que simula el comportamiento del sistema de energía eléctrica de la fundición. En ese sentido, los módulos facilitan una adecuada planificación, ya que permiten conocer el comportamiento de la demanda horaria y los patrones de consumo de la planta, incluyendo los componentes de la facturación. Así como las deficiencias energéticas y oportunidades de mejora, sobre la base del análisis de la información acerca de los equipos, procesos y planes de producción, así como programas de mantenimiento.

"The feed ore to Agh-Darreh gold processing plant (Takab City, Iran) contains 2 ppm Au, 7 ppm Ag, and 120 ppm Hg. After cyanide leaching of the feed at pH 10.4, 80% of the total mercury (in the form of cinnabar and metacinnabar) goes to the tailings dam. In this research, separation of mercury from the tailings by flotation was investigated. The effects of collector type and dosage, pH, and the number of cleaner stages were studied. The results showed that after two stages of cleaning a 40–62% recovery of Hg at a grade of 14.3% Hg is attainable. Recycle water from a test in which 50 g/t amyl xanthate and 30 g/t pine oil was used in the flotation stage showed no adverse effect on the leaching and adsorption of gold onto activated carbon.IntroductionMercury, most commonly found in the nature as the mineral cinnabar (HgS), is a hazardous substance because of its mobility and toxicity (Kyle et al., 2012). Roasting is the wellestablished treatment method for mercury ores, in which the sulphur is burned and volatilized and mercury recovered subsequently by cooling and condensation. However, for low-grade ores, flotation is mainly applied for primary concentration due to its comparatively low costs, low environmental hazards, and flexibility regarding feed variations (Bulatovic, 2007). Particularly, cinnabar can be easily recovered by flotation using pine oil and a collector such as xanthate (Bulatovic, 2007; Crozier, 1991). Floatability of cinnabar is reduced due to surface oxidation when it is exposed to the atmosphere after crushing. This problem can be eliminated by adding copper sulphate and lead nitrate or acetate. The best pH for cinnabar flotation is in the range of 6.5 to 8.5 according to Erspamer and Wells, (1954), who reported that cinnabar and stibnite can be floated with long-chain xanthate collectors and an alcohol frother, with cumulative recoveries of 97.8% and 94.7%, respectively. Lead acetate was used as an activator."

"Blast furnace performance depends strongly on the coke reactivity index(CRI) and coke strength after reaction (CSR) properties. An innovative and cost-effective method, known as the Salem Box Test, has been developed to prevent the mass production of inferior coke unsuitable for blast furnace use. This method consists of coal carbonization on a micro-scale and involves charging approximately 18 kg of coal blend in a stainless steel box, carbonizing it together with coal cake in the plant coke ovens, and testing the coke produced for CRI and CSR to determine its suitability for blast furnace use. Only coal blends that yield coke with CRI <25% and CSR >64% are permitted for mass production, and other coal blends are either rejected or the blending ratios adjusted in an attempt to upgrade them. The experimental results reveal that, for a given coal blend, the quality of coke produced by the Salem Box Test is comparable with that produced by bulk production, indicating that the test is acceptable as a screening tool for regular use. The present paper describes the methodology and application of Salem Box Test to predict the suitability of coke for blast furnace use at JSW Steel Limited, Salem Works (JSWSL), and illustrates its advantages in adjusting the coal blending ratio to produce superior coke, in detecting coal contamination, and in preventing bulk production of inferior coke."
