The extractive industry has been faced with a situation where there has been no systematic and formalised training and education structure available. Previous structures which were available, e.g. the quarrying diploma and the mining papers as a part of an engineering degree, have suffered the same fate as the Dodo. They are now extinct.   In providing for a training strategy, the past strategies need to be examined and reasons behind their demise examined. This paper examines the reasons for past failures in education and training in the extractives industry, the factors that need to be taken into account in creating an education and training culture, the strategies required, the Government regulations and trans-Tasman agreements, and the quality management which must surround the entire training programme.

Wood cribs are used extensively to stabilize openings in underground coal mines. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes the results of full-scale testing of several multitimbered wood crib configurations. Multitimbered configurations are wood cribs that are constructed with two or more timbers per layer. Nine different crib configurations were evaluated. Configuration parameters under study included the aspect ratio (height-to-width relationship) and the percentage of solid rr:aterial used in crib construction. Test results and generalized wood crib behavior are discussed and recommendations are made concerning crib constructions to maximize strength and stability. Crib performance is enhanced by reducing buckling effects by decreasing the aspect ratio and geometry considerations that increase the moment of inertia. A cost benefit analysis of multitimbered wood crib configurations is made. Generally, increasing the percentage of solid provides more resistance at less unit construction cost. A comparison of laboratory results and underground observations of several wood pack wall supports suggest in situ load capacity is less than that measured in laboratory testing. Reasons for the apparent decrease of in situ load-bearing capability include load rate effects, stiffness of reaction surfaces, and varying boundary conditions that alter the load transfer mechanics of the crib structure.

Recent hotel investment projects in China often involve very tight programmes for design and construction. An example given in this paper involves a 24-storey reinforced concrete hotel tower with 460 bedrooms and a 3-level podium commercial complex. The building is supported by relatively widely spaced columns and shear walls below which 88 number large diameter piers were excavated through fill, silty and bouldery clay on to dolerite and slate at depths between 15 to 3 0m below ground level. Whereas much experience has been accumulated in Hong Kong, hand-excavated pier foundation was only adopted for the first time in Dalian. This paper describes and discusses the various factors influencing the choice of the type and design of the foundation system. The criteria for determining appropriate founding levels are then explained. During installation, revisions to the acceptance procedure were made to cater for local conditions. Emphasis is placed on the role of the geotechnical engineer in making on-site decisions during construction. The advantage of the foundation system in accommodating on-site changes resulting from local complex ground conditions is demonstrated. The pier foundations were successfully completed ahead of programme.

The southern portion of the Swan Coastal Plain, a geomorphological element formed since late Tertiary times, contains commercially exploitable accumulations of ilmenite, zircon, rutile and monazite associated with a series of raised shorelines. The location of the deposits is controlled by a locally outcropping Archaen granite/ granulite complex and a sea current pattern determined by local geography and a prevailing wind direction. A progression from medium to high titanium ilmenite is evident parallelled by progressive leucoxenisation as the age of the deposits increases. Variations in trace element content accompany this process. Circulating groundwater has caused vertical mineralogical variations within individual deposits and by precipitation of iron has formed layers of hardpan.The Geographe Bay deposits are of important economic significance.INTRODUCTIONObservations made during the course of a brief survey of the southern portion of the Swan Coastal Plain provide an outline of the geology and mineralogy of the mineral sand deposits of the area. This preliminary study will require considerable modification in the light of more detailed work in the future.REGIONAL GEOLOGYThe Geographe Bay area is situated in the south-west corner of Western Australia between longitudes 115° O'W. and 116° O'W. and latitudes 33° 15'S. and 33° 45'S.The general geology of the area is shown in Fig. 1 where the control of the physiography exercised by the Cape Leeuwin-Cape Naturaliste basement ridge is readily apparent. Between this ridge and the Precambrian east of the Darling fault lies the southern part of the Perth basin which contains outcropping Jurassic to Recent sediments and lavas (McWhae, et al., 1958).The Leeuwin-Naturaliste ridge is the exposed portion of L Assistant Production Managcr. This paper refers to the new crushing and grinding process, which was invented by Professor Schönert (Ref.1), Clausthal, Germy (author of one of the papers presented at this meeting). The process is known as high pressure particle bed comminution or interparticle crushing. Several papers by Professor Schonert and his coworkers and by specialists of the companies producing the necessary equipment under license agreements already described fundamentals of the process, the equipment used, results of lab size and large scale tests and finally the first results of truly commercial operations (Ref .2 to 11). Therefore it should be sufficient to summarize the main facts here: - To a bed of bulk material a pressure of more than 50 MPa is applied. Comminution is achieved mainly by the pressure which one particle transfers to the other and not by squeezing single particles between the working surfaces of some crusher or grinding media.

Specific energy (SE) is defined as the amount of work required to cut a unit volume of rock and is used to estimate the performance of excavation machines. Generally, the SE value is produced from full-scale or small-scale rock cutting tests. However, these tests require expensive equipment and experienced personnel, and the testing procedure is time consuming and impractical. Therefore, for estimation of SE, this study aimed to find a solution to estimate SE using rock mechanics test results and Bond work index values (BWi), which can be produced in a more practical, less time-consuming manner and with inexpensive test equipment. Small-scale rock cutting, rock mechanics and Bond work index tests were carried out on seven rock samples, which can be grouped into two different type of rocks: marble and travertine. In addition, the instantaneous cutting rates (ICR) of a selected roadheader were calculated using SE values. Rock mechanics tests performed in this study were uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), Brazilian tensile strength (BTS), ultrasonic velocity (Vp), Schmidt rebound hardness (RL), corrected point load index (Is(50)) and density (ρ). The simple regression method was used to estimate SE from rock properties and BWi. As a result of this simple regression, a significant and highest correlation was found between SE vs. UCS and Is(50). A good correlation was found between SE vs. BTS, RL and BWi values. A moderate correlation was found between SE vs. Vp and ρ.

"The dangerous nature of explosives makes them a potential hazard wherever they are used, but they are likely to exercise their greatest harmfulness under conditions inherent in coal mining. The ease with which explosives can be detonated and the suddenness and violence with which they detonate require great care in their handling and use, if acci-dents are to be avoided. Campaigns have been waged by the manufacturers, the Federal Bureau of Mines, coal-mining companies, and other agencies to educate users of explosives in their dangers and in their proper use and care.Probably 95 percent of the explosives accidents can be attributed to poor judgment, carelessness, negligence, or chance taking. In many explosives accidents it is difficult to determine the cause definitely, as the evidence of the origin is destroyed by the blast and frequently those involved have been killed. Survivors of the accident often are of little help in determining the cause, as the accident occurs so suddenly they cannot tell what happened or prefer not to divulge the information they have because it may point to their own carelessness.A survey has indicated that about 10 percent of all fatalities in coal mines were caused by explosives accidents (excluding gas and dust explosions initiated by explosives). A list of explosives accidents by States, from 1925 to 1932, classified according to the severity of the accidents, indicated that Kentucky and Wyoming had the greatest number of fatalities resulting from explosives accidents. Records of the Bureau of Mines show that 14 coal-mine explosions occurred from January 1 to June 1, 1943. Explosives were involved in four of these explosions. Black powder caused two of the accidents and permissible explosives used in a nonpermissible manner the other two. These statistics are mentioned to show that explosives are still causing severe accidents.Elimination of the hazards associated with explosives begins on the surface. Storage magazines should have no opening, except for entrance and ventilation; ventilators should be screened effectively to prevent the admittance of sparks as well as to prevent unauthorized entrance. The interior should be kept clean and dry, and the floor should be of nonsparking material with no metal exposed. The surrounding area should be kept free of combustible material for not less than 25 feet (and preferably 50 feet) in all directions. Storage magazines should be fire-resistant and reasonably bulletproof."

This Information Circular is an abstract of a manuscript which was completed in June 1933, by Mr. Hugh M. Wolflin, formerly of the U. S. Bur eau of Mines. This abstract has been prepared by Charles Will Wright for presentation at the February meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in New York. It has been necessary to omit many of the details and most of the cost data and tables, as well as the illustrations in the original manuscript. As the use of airplanes in mining developments is making such progress and as a publication on this subject to be of greatest value should include the most recent information, it is unfortunate that, due to a lack of printing funds, it has not been possible to publish this manuscript. The purposes of Mr. Wolflin's paper are: (1) To describe briefly what has been accomplished in some outstanding examples by the use of aircraft in the mining and petroleum industries, (2) To record costs, (3) To present available information and suggestions to assist in solving future air-transportation problems in the industries under consideration.

Up to 50 percent of major infrastructure projects suffer impacts to schedule or cost due to geotechnical issues, many of which correspond to risks related directly or indirectly to the scope and quality of site characterization work. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in coordination with industry organizations seeks to address this issue through Every Day Counts (EDC), a program that identifies and deploys proven, yet underutilized innovations at the project level to save time, money and resources. The A-GaME (Advanced Geotechnical Methods in Exploration) is one of the innovations supported under EDC.

Morrison (Chairman, Dept. of Mining Engineering and Applied Geophysics, McGill University, Montreal, Que., Canada) - The discing of drill core has been a recognized pressure phenomenon for many years but only recently has an interest been taken in the mechanism involved. The work of Jaeger and Cook is referred to in the text. The authors have now advanced the study to establish, within certain loading limitations, a direct relationship between axial and radial stress at failure. This is an important contribution. In mines generally, where pressure conditions result in the spalling of openings, the faces of drifts and crosscuts, on scaling, usually show a concavity with respect to the opening very similar to the face of the drill hole after the separation of the stub. The same holds for shaft sinks. This suggests a similarity between the mechanism of the discing of core and that of the spalling of an opening, under pressure, to develop a more stable outline. This report is volume 10 of an eleven-volume final report for a Grant completed by The Pennsylvania State University for the Bureau of Mines to develop a dynamic general purpose computer simulation model for underground coal mining. The simulator developed under the Grant has a wide range of possible applications in the design and evaluation of underground coal mining systems from the standpoints of health and safety, productivity, and mine environment. The Master Design Simulator consists of nine free-standing function-oriented subsystem models linked together into an integrated, comprehensive model of an entire mining system. The subsystems comprising the Master Design Simulator include geology and reserves, methane generation, roof support, subsidence, production, rail haulage, cost, water generation, and ventilation. This volume of the final report describes the Ventilation subsystem of the Master Design Simulator. The Ventilation subsystem has the capabilities to handle: (1) branches in parallel or series, (2) fans in parallel or series, (3) multiple fans, (4) methane, compressed air, or other injections into the system, (5) leakages and fixed quantities, and (6) calculations of absolute pressure at nodes. The program uses the Kirchoff's Junction and mesh laws, and the Hardy-Cross iterative technique to converge to the desired accuracy in solving fox the head quantity. A case study is included in the report illustrating the use of the model. The appendices of the report constitute a user's manual for the Ventilation subsystem, and include a program listing.

Several grindability tests were developed over the years to design grinding circuits or optimize existing operations. Each test has its own strengths and weaknesses and it is imperative to select the proper test procedure(s) to meet project deliverables and minimize the risk of a project. Pilot plant testing of large bulk samples historically constituted the traditional approach for AG or SAG design, but was gradually replaced by small-scale tests. Nowadays, conducting grindability tests requiring only a few kilos of material on several samples is a more typical approach to grinding mill design. This paper summarises the requirements and deliverables of various bench-scale test procedures, their strengths and weaknesses, and cases where AG/SAG pilot testing should still be performed.

Jute fiber reinforced polymer composites are among the most investigated and applied natural composites. In this past decade the mechanical properties of these composites has been assessed for various types of test conditions. However, the reported results correspond mainly to short-cut jute fiber composites, which do not present the highest mechanical strength as compared to continuous fibers of the same kind. In order to complement these results, the present work evaluated the mechanical behavior, by means of flexural tests, of polyester matrix composites reinforced with continuous jute fibers. Bend tests were conducted in standard specimens with up to 40% of jute. Fracture analysis by SEM displayed the rupture mechanisms. The results showed an improvement in some flexural properties with incorporation of jute fiber. However, a low fiber/matrix interfacial stress was responsible for limitation in the values attained by some properties.

In-place leaching is being actively utilized to extract uranium, copper, and evaporites from low-grade and difficult-to-mine ores. The purpose of this report is to discuss in-place leaching technology, its advantages and disadvantages, and to give an overview of past, current, and envisioned in-place leaching operations in the U.S.A. Application of in-place leaching to uranium ores has been particularly successful because the conditions for leaching are nearly ideal. The ores are generally in highly permeable sandstone aquifers bounded above and below by impermeable shales. The uranium ore minerals are easily leached with oxidizing acid or base solution and the pregnant solutions are amenable to ion exchange concentration and purification prior to conventional solution neutralization for recovery of yellow cake. Copper is routinely recovered from sub-grade rock by dump leaching at most major copper mines. Acidified ferric sulfate is either sprayed on the surface of the dumps or is ponded on top of the dumps. The leaching solution migrates down through the rock and dissolves copper. The solution is collected from the base of the dumps and copper is recovered by solvent extraction-electrowinning or by cementation on detinned steel cans. True in-place copper leaching is being practiced in the caved stopes of an exhausted underground copper mine. Other innovative in-place copper leaching techniques have been tested commercially and laboratory- and pilot-scale experiments have been conducted to investigate proposed in-place leaching techniques for extracting copper from difficult-to-treat chalcopyrite ores. Solution mining of evaporites is being conducted commercially for the extraction of sodium chloride and potassium chloride. A large-scale experimental project for solution mining of trona has been undertaken.

MARTA, The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, is building a 53 mile heavy rail transit system to serve the City of Atlanta. Phase A of the Rail System, consisting of approximately 14 miles of at-grade, aerial and subway construction is underway. Metropolitan Atlanta lies in the Piedmont Geologic province of Georgia and is underlain by rocks of essentially granitic and gneissic nature. The soils encountered are primarily silty sands which are in-place weathering products of the parent rock and exhibit their relic structure. In general, these materials have presented no unique construction problems other than those created-by proximity of manmade structures, local availability of ground water, and top of rock elevation. The subway sections of primary interest in this paper consist of hardrock and soft ground tunnels and extensive cut-and-cover sections. The cut-and-cover construction includes excavations as deep as 80 feet. Temporary support systems in these deep excavations consist of soldier pile-timber-lagging or soldier pile-tremie concrete (SPTC) walls with internal bracing or tiebacks. In shallow cut-and-cover sections, where right-of-way economics permitted, slopes were laid back partially or fully to reduce or eliminate the need for bracing systems. The project involved design, construction, and testing of hydraulic models of culverts, decant and open channel spillways which are typical drainage structures used for protecting mine waste embankments. MSHA (The Mine Safety and Health Administration, U. S. Department of Labor) made a motion picture of the tests. Tests results and products in the forms of graphs, tables and films, demonstrate the principles and factors which govern the function and performance of the three types of drainage structures.

Active geothermal systems occur widely in Sumatra and in the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ) ofNew Zealand. There are also many occurrences of epithermal gold mineralisation in Sumatra, some of which are economic. Minor sub-economic occurrences of gold have been reported in the TVZ but none have yet been mined. There are both similarities and differences in the nature of the active geothermal systems and mineral deposits in Sumatra and New Zealand, which can be systematically related to the tectonic setting. The thicker crust and consequent predominance of silicic volcanism in New Zealand leads to hydrothermal systems which are little eroded and with limited lateral outflows. The systems in Sumatra are of mixed character, with some of the characteristics of those in andesitic island arcs such as Java or the Philippines, e.g. a higher proportion of systems with identifiable acid magmatic volatiles, a greater potential for deep erosion and lateral outflows than in New Zealand; but modified by the more oblique component of subduction and thickened crust so that some are localised in volcano-tectonic depressions and consequently have high piezometric levels of primary hydrothermal fluid. The unusual occurrence of calcic zeolites in veins associated with gold mineralisation in Sumatra is thought to be indicative of æsatelliteÆ boiling zones along de-gassed hydrothermal outflows.
