Final mine sealing of BMA’s Crinum North mine, near Emerald, Queensland was undertaken in December 2015. Due to the benign atmospheric environment at Crinum North, the Queensland Mines Rescue Service (QMRS) Górniczy Agregat Gasniczy (GAG) unit was utilised to reduce oxygen levels throughout the underground atmosphere as part of the final sealing process.The GAG was utilised by way of a vertical borehole from the surface to seam to successfully reduce oxygen levels throughout the underground mine workings. Application of the GAG unit enabled the underground mine to be classified as stable and inert within days of the GAG operation, and subsequently cease gas monitoring at Crinum North. The data and information obtained from this activity provides valuable information to the underground coal mining industry on successful application of the GAG in realistic situations.This paper discusses the strategy used for sealing, the assisted inertisation and the results obtained from the application of the GAG unit. It discusses both the overall results and gives a detailed review of the gas monitoring data obtained via the tube bundle and real-time system, both during and following the use of the GAG unit.Gas monitoring results obtained and the strategy used are critical to share with the industry to obtain a better understanding of how the GAG unit works, and how it can be applied for emergency preparedness, emergency response or planned inertisation.CITATION:Westthorp, E, 2017. Coal mining in New Zealand is principally a State-owned and controlled operation where the State produces 70 per cent of the coal in New Zealand and 65 per cent of coal mined in the Waikato. The State's flexibility in production quality and price makes them tough competition. Coal in the Waikato varies in quality considerably throughout the region making the high quality coal deposits as in the Huntly district a highly sought after commodity. The high quality of coal is often offset against transport costs as, for example, Maramarua coals can compete effectively in the Auckland market and dollar per calorific value basis.

This report describes a study of the factors which affect medium voltage (661 - 1000 volts) and high voltage (1001 - 7500 volts) trailing cable couplers for use in underground coal mines to connect trailing rabies. Improvements in quality, dependability, and safety of medium and high voltage couplers are presented in the form of requirements for couplers. The results of an investigation of high voltage trailing cable coupler design and of whether trailing cable couplers must have a metallic shell as required by CFR 30 part 75.805 are presented. Conclusions and recommended research programs are included that describe the present situation and future development approaches.

The competitive position of producers of industrial minerals depends upon the delivered price of their product. Freight charges are a major factor in the sales to consumers. A comparison of freight rates on movements of limestone and silica rock in the Pacific Northwest shows a wide variance in mills per ton mile for like hauls, thereby favoring some localities over others. Introduction: Sooner or later the potential miner of industrial minerals reaches the conclusion that of the various factors he must consider, the marketing of his product is. the most important. The sooner he realizes this the better, as successful industrial mineral producers .will confirm. Herein lies a difference between i.ndustria1 mineral mining and metal mining. Often in the latter, technical problems of mining or concentrating are equal to or even surpass those of marketing. This is not meant to imply that there are no problems in mining and beneficiation of industrial minerals, but these usually are outweighed by the problem of marketing. Recentlv. an official of a nationally known corporation :i the elecl.ro-metallurgical industry made an industrial mineral survey in the Pacific Northwest. In the course of his investigation he interviewed producers and potential producers of the various industrial minerals scheduled for use in the plant now being constructed in this area. He stated that he was interested in only three factors: namely, (1) Can your product meet our specifications? (2) Are you able to supply our tonnage requirements? and (3) What will be the delivered price? If there are several sources of supply of sufficient grade and tonnage, as is often the case in the Northwest, then the third factor becomes the important and deciding one. While industrial minerals are usually sold f.0.b. cars with the freight being paid by the buyer, it is the delivered and riot the f.0.b. price that determines the competitive position of the producer and his industrial mineral product. Unfortunately for both the consumers and producers of industrial minerals in the Northwest, the sources are generally a considerable distance from the markets. This necessitates long rail hauls, for which transportation charges make up the largest share of the delivered cost and the delivered price of the product. Is it any wonder then, that rail rates play such an important part in the marketing of industrial minerals? In order to sell his product, the producer must be able to deliver to the market at a competitive price. It must be remembered that his largest cost factor is rail transportation, and that he is limited to markets that he can reach competitively. Since the cost of rail transportation is so important, let us compare various freight rates in the Northwest and attempt to determine their influence on marketing. A study of all rates on all industrial minerals transported in this area, is beyond the scope of this paper. For the purposes of comparison, let us consider limestone (broken, crushed, or ground), and silica rock. These are widely used industrial minerals, and are carried by several different rail routes from.the sources of supply to the centers of consumption in the Pacific Northwest. Only recently has the term Induced Polarization found its way into geophysical literature. Schlumberger first mentioned the possible use of the induced polarization effect in one of his early papers. Later, induced polarization was the subject of several university theses, such as Seigel's at the University of Toronto and Bliel's at the Michigan School of Technology. In addition, a group at the New Mexico School of Mining and Technobgy has done work on induced polarization. There is very little to be found in print on the subject of induced polarization. Several papers have been presented at meetings, the 1958 AIME and SEG* conventions, for instance, on laboratory measurements of the effect and theoretical considerations useful in the interpretation of field results. This paper is the first attempt to present actual field results which show the usefulness of induced polarization as a prospecting technique. There are several phenomena that can cause polarization when electrical current is passed through the ground. In a paper presented at the 1958 SEG* meetings Professor T. R. Madden of M. I. T. demonstrated that only two of these gave rise to appreciable effects. The first is a result of the membrane and diffusion effects in a sandstone that contains appre- ciable amounts of clay minerals. The unbonded charges associated with the clay mineral forma material that passes positive and negative ions with different mobilities. When current is passed through such a system for some period of time, polarization results. The second phenomenon, which gives rise to very much larger polarization effects, is the one used in the new prospecting technique. These effects are a result of the blocking action or polarization of metallic or electronic conductors in a medium of ionic solution conduction. This electrochemical polarization, called "the over-voltage effect" by electro-chemists, occurs whenever electrical current is passed through a volume of rock which contains metallic minerals such as base metal sulphides. This polarization at metallic interfaces in ionic solutions depends upon the chemical energies necessary to allow the ions to continue the flow of current by giving up or receiving an electron from the metallic surfaces. The energy stored in this reaction isanalogous to that stored when a condenser is charged. If a d. c. current flowing through such a system is interrupted, the polarization can be detected as a small, decaying current that flows after the applied current is discontinued. The decaying potential measured is a result of the current flow caused by charges returning to their equilibrium positions from the positions they assumed under the applied potential field. Queensland?s underground coal industry, as a whole, has arguably the best gas monitoring systems in the world. Each mine utilizes real time, tube bundle and onsite ultra fast gas chromatograph systems. Queensland?s mining legislation has specific requirements for mine gas monitoring but there is no requirement for all three techniques. Industry has however identified the need for all three and adopted this as a standard, resulting in over sixty thousand gas results collected each day. Automated monitoring systems are programmed to alarm for gas concentrations, gas ratios and explosibility. These alarms are then used to initiate predetermined actions to take control of the situation and prevent the compromise of safety to workers and the loss of resources. Dedicated software packages have been developed to assist in the interpretation of the large volume of results generated. The real time systems are used for real time warning, essential for incidents such as belt fires. Tube bundle systems suit long term trending used for identification of the onset of spontaneous combustion or for the determination of explosibility during the routine sealing of worked areas. Gas chromatograph analysis is used to provide a complete analysis and provides results for hydrogen and ethylene, key gases used in the assessment of spontaneous combustion. It is also crucial during significant spontaneous combustion events and coal fires to use gas chromatography to determine the explosibility status of the underground atmosphere otherwise the severity of the situation is likely to be under estimated. This paper outlines the need for all three techniques for assessing the underground status and outlines advantages and disadvantages of each.

Gold mining require high levels of dilution control due the high value of ore. These types of operations employ short benches, which are suitable for ore control, lower displacement and more representative block models. However, shorter benches makes fragmentation by blasting difficult because blast designs tend to be stiff in regards to burden/bench height ratio. This is especially relevant in hard, massive ore bodies where usual drilling diameters lead to poor energy distribution. In regards to control ore loss and dilution, there are different techniques to minimize both, which include: panel blasting, buffer blasting to muck piles and differential loading of areas of the blast bench. All of them should be sequenced with appropriate displacement along the ore/waste contacts. This paper describes extensive engineering approaches to achieve both dilution control while not hurting fragmentation in the very hard, massive ore sections of a mine case study. Ore Tracker microchips are used to correlate performance of these designs at the SAG mill (bottleneck of this specific operation). Another gold mine uses the same technology to detect when and where operational dilution is happening. The system tells where flagging of the different ore bodies has been followed in order to detect which operators pass the excavation limits beyond ore control flagging.

The epithermal gold-silver deposits wall poster is one in a series of posters on different mineral deposit types being produced by GNS Science to raise awareness of the characteristics of New Zealand mineral deposits and their prospectivity. Epithermal deposits consist of quartz veins, quartz vein stockworks and hydrothermal breccias that are mainly hosted in subaerial andesitic or rhyolitic rocks of Tertiary age. The deposits were formed at depths of typically less than 1 km and at temperatures between 180¦ and 320¦C, although ore grade mineralisation was generally deposited at less than 270¦C.   In New Zealand, epithermal deposits occur in association with late Cenozoic volcanic rocks in the Northland, Coromandel and Taupo volcanic regions. All of the past and present gold production, estimated at greater than 380 t (along with 1300 t Ag) comes from the Miocene-Pliocene Coromandel Volcanic Zone, where about 50 epithermal gold-silver deposits occur over a 200 km long belt. In Northland, silver and mercury have been produced from hot spring type epithermal deposits, and several gold-silver prospects have been identified. Ore grade gold-silver mineralisation is currently being deposited in several active geothermal fields of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, and extinct geothermal systems occur on the western side of the zone. The active systems have provided natural laboratories to help understand the processes of epithermal mineralisation.

When Oryx Mine down-scaled in 1994, focus was placed on development, with the primary aim being the exposure and proving of ore reserves. In order to achieve this aim, development ends had to be advanced to reef at the maximum possible rate. This in turn called for support methods which could keep up with the advancing faces, taking up minimum space and time for installation, while providing on the face a real coverage and effective long-term support. In the majority of the development ends which were located in fairly competent ground, the grouted rod development support proved to be adequate until such time as secondary support in the form of meshing and lacing could be installed. The ends developing towards the eastern boundary of the mine, especially in the ?C? block, encountered extremely adverse ground conditions due to the presence of smectite zones within the footwall quartzites. Smectites are a group of montmorillonite clay materials, mainly composed of hydrous aluminosilicates. They occur as minute platy crystals in the rock mass and are especially notable for their ability to absorb liquids. Generally, the zones are found in between the bedding planes of the host rock, and may vary considerably in thickness over short distances. Wherever the smectites were exposed by the development blasting, the rockwalls weathered as the smectites absorbed water and the condition of the tunnel rockwalls deteriorated rapidly. When the smectites were left exposed and allowed to weather, it became almost impossible to install secondary permanent support such as meshing and lacing at a later stage. To minimise the exposure time and subsequent deterioration of the smectite zones, it was recommended that all development ends encountering smectites be shotcreted as soon as possible after blasting. In developing a shotcreting support methodology, both a drycreting and wetcreting system were investigated. The situation at the time ruled out the use of a wetcreting system on the basis of the extensive and costly infrastructure required, as well as its limited manoeuverability. Instead, it was decided to opt for as maller scale but more manoeuverable drycreting system. The system utilized a number of portable drycrete machines with pre-bagged cement, which could support several development ends in close proximity. Initial trials using normal 30 MPa shotcrete on 19level proved successful and the system was implemented.

The high incidence of accidents and fatalities in the South African mining industry, in particular those associated with falls of ground, is often attributed to ineffective and/or inappropriate training methods and material. Recently introduced mine health and safety legislation in South Africa also requires that all mine workers receive appropriate and effective training to enable them to operate safely in their given mining environment. There can, therefore, be no doubt that methods to provide effective training, in particular safety related training, are urgently required in the South African mining industry. In the search for alternative and improved training approaches, attention has fallen on virtual reality (VR) technology as a possible solution. VR has found acceptance in a number of industries as an effective method of training for a variety of work place activities, including those of a safety related nature. VR has successfully been applied in a number of industries to improve the effectiveness of safety and hazard awareness training. The CSIR: Division of Mining Technology (CSIR Miningtek), in conjunction with the Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC), therefore evaluated the potential of VR to be used as a training medium in the South African gold and platinum mining industry. Aspects of the evaluation included an assessment of the technical capability of VR to represent a typical underground mining environment with sufficient realism and the relevance of the VR training concept for a largely illiterate workforce. For these purposes, a prototype PC-based VR hazard awareness training simulator has been developed by CSIR Miningtek, and a series of evaluation sessions conducted at a typical deep level gold mine. The conclusion from this evaluation work is that virtual reality technology has the potential to provide effective training systems that are relevant to the South African mining industry. Sintered fly ash was shown to have promise as a modifier for poorly drained soils. Turf grown in mixtures of sintered fly ash and soil benefited from increased water-infiltration rates, greater total pore space, and higher moisture availability, The result was an improved turf stand with increased grass yield and root density.

Laboratory testing examined the effect of a variety of intrinsic rock properties and environment conditions that influence the adhesive bond between rock and thin spray-on liners. The liner materials used for these tests were Tekflex, provided by Fosroc, Castonite, provided by Rohms and Haas Co., Rockweb provided by Spray-on Plastics, and CS 1251 2K, provided by Master Builders. Some of the variables examined include: rock strength (tensile/compressive strength) rock mineralogy, rock surface roughness (grain size, fracture/joint roughness), and surface contamination (oil, water or dust). Under optimal conditions, adhesive strengths reaching at least 3 MPa can be achieved. Where the rock surface is contaminated with dust or the rock is weak in tension, it may be difficult to reach adhesion strengths of 1 to 1.5 MPa.

In 1961, West Australian Petroleum's Eneabba No. 1 bore encountered 22 seams of coal totalling 40 ft in thickness between the depths of 6373 ft and 6441 ft. On analysis, this coal had a similar calorific value (8000-HOOO B.T.U./lb, assuming 20 per cent water) to the coal from the Collie Coalfield, Western Australia's only known area of commercially exploitable coal. Being buried to depths in excess of 6000 ft, the coal at Eneabba had developed weakly-coking properties, and thus, although much younger than the Permian coals of Collie, gave promise of being a major potential source of power for Western Australia.West Australian Petroleum undertook a programme of stratigraphic drilling and shallow test drilling to determine whether this coalhorizon persisted into the outcrop of the Lower Jurassic sediments in the Hill River district, 140 miles NNW. of Perth, and, if it was present, if the quality and quantity of the coal would warrant development of the deposits by open cutting. The coal horizon was identified in the near surface, but the poor quality of the coal and the complexity of the structure made development (in the area examined) uneconomic at the time.A strong seismic reflection in the Eneabba area occurs at the same depth as the Jurassic coals. This event originates within the upper beds of the Lower Jurassic and it is probable that the velocity contrast between the higher velocity siltstones and the very low velocity coals enhances this very strong, distinctive seismic reflection.This event can be followed on continuous seismic data over a large area of the northern Perth Basin, from 13 miles SE. of Dongara to 20 miles SW. of Coorow. It can be followed from a depth of 4000 ftnear Dongara to over 17,000 ft to the SE., so development of thisvast potential source of power will depend on the economics ofprocesses being developed for the production of power from theburning of coal seams in situ.INTRODUCTIONThe discovery of 22 seams of economically useable coaltotalling 40 ft in thickness in the Lower J urassic sedimentsof the Eneabba No. 1 bore (Fig. 1) led to the search forthese seams at economically workable depths. This is the ninth annual tabulation of royalty information. Again this year, some of the older information has been deleted to make room for more than 30 new entries. Several articles and publications crossed the author's desk this past year that relate to mineral valuation and mineral royalty. Tom Loucks presented a paper, "The Valuation of Hard Rock Mineral Property," at the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation in Santa Fe, NM in July, 1990. His paper gives an indepth explanation of the definitions and concepts related to mineral valuation. It includes descriptions of numerous legal cases that have dealt with mineral valuation and proper reference is given for each case. Loucks works for the Denver Mining Finance Co. Gold royalties generally range from 5% to 7%, net smelter return. However, Severn Brown sent information that shows a much wider variation. Echo Bay Mines reported in its 1989 annual report royalties that range from 1.5 % to 30% for gold from various gold properties. Brown also sent a copy of an article that appeared in the Dec. 27, 1982, issue of Fortune magazine. This issue carried an article by Walter Guzzardi, Jr. "The Huge Find in Roy Ash's Backyard." The article gives the history of Newmont's leasing in Nevada on property that became the Carlin, Bootstrap and Blue Star Mines. The article states that the initial royalty was 10% that escalated to more than 16%. Another property, the site of Gold Quarry, provides an 18% royalty to the same own¬ers. The article makes interesting reading for those interested in mining history.

"While the design of a control strategy depends on the available process knowledge, its implementation depends on the available process information. On-line chemical analyzers are today widely spread in the mineral processing industry. A real-time concentration measurement of chemical components is valuable information that could bring control strategies to whole new levels. However, the use of these measures rarely reaches anything more than process monitoring. The reason is simple: the on-line chemical measurements quality is most of the time insufficient to be directly included in control strategies. The choice is then made to let the critical eye of the engineer or the operator appreciates the measurements before making any decision based on it.Data reconciliation through mass balance is a technique today widely used in the mineral processing industry to increase the accuracy and the reliability of plant data, mainly for accounting and survey analysis purposes. Real-time data reconciliation of on-line measurements appears as a natural coupling of technologies that could bring new process optimization trends. Once overcome the technical difficulties, full valorization of the instrumentation investment could be reached.This paper presents the application of real-time data reconciliation for process control and performance monitoring. It proposes a general approach, discusses challenges and illustrates concepts with industry experiences."

The Indian Standards code of practice for design and construction of underreamed piles contains provision for installing such piles in expasive soils. In recent years, a large amount of research work has been carried out in the analysis, design, construction and performance of underreamed piles in expansive soils. This paper suggests that the results of this research field tests should be included in the code. Various additions and modifications as well as deletions that should be incorporated in the code are discussed.

THE numerous theories of hardening which have been advanced in recent years are all satisfactory in accounting for some of the phenomena observed in hardening metals, but none so far presented account for all of the facts observed. Some years ago one of the authors, R. S. Dean,' presented a theory to account for some of the properties accompanying work hardening. The present paper develops this theory further in the light of recent experimental work and extends it to other forms of hardening. Many of the ideas included have come from the writings and personally communicated thoughts of others. We have attempted to give proper credit in every case, but it is possible that we have not always done so. As an historical basis it is desirable here to review very briefly the hardening theories which have been current. The first comprehensive theory of work-hardening phenomena was due to Sir George Beilby.2 He contributed the idea that with cold work part of the structure of the metal was rendered amorphous and that-it was to this amorphous material that the cold-worked metal owed its difference in properties. According to Beilby's theory this amorphous material was a supercooled liquid and, therefore, had the characteristics of a vitreous material. That such a theory is not capable of explaining the property changes in metals has been repeatedly pointed out. This theory also allowed a slip to take place only once on a given plane, which, as has been pointed out by Jeffries and Archer13 is not consistent with the observed length of an, individual slip and the amount of elongation which can be obtained by wire drawing. The modifications, which have been proposed to this hypothesis to make it coincide with the experimental facts, have to a considerable extent robbed the theory of its clean-cut characteristics.
