Arsenic sulfide [orpiment, realgar, amorphous AsS and As2S3] oxidation rates were measured in mixed flow reactors at pH~2 and temperature of 25-30oC. The measured oxidation rates for arsenic sulfide solids by dissolved oxygen are in the range of 10-11 to 10-10 mole m-2 s-1 after being normalized to final surface area. The order of arsenic sulfide oxidation rates decreases at pH~2 from amorphous AsS > realgar > orpiment > amorphous As2S3. In comparison to pyrite, arsenic sulfide oxidation rates are approximately 1.5 to 15 times slower than pyrite oxidation rates at pH~2.

Equipment was constructed which permitted the hot compression of 99.8 pct Armco iron and 2.8 pct Si steel at constant true strain rates of 0.05 to 1 per sec over the temperature range 600" to 1000°C. A maximum true strain of 1.9 could be attained, followed by immediate quenching or by isothermal annealing. True stress-true strain curves were obtained, and the steady-state flout stress, a, strain rate, i, and temperature, T, were found to fit the following expression: The constants A, a, n', and AH were determined for the two ,materials. The activation energies obtained for Arrnco iron and silicon steel are 66 and 80 kcal per mole, respectively, and approximate those for seu- diffusion and for creep. This indicates that hot compression is a diffusion-controlled thermally activated process. THE hot compression of iron and steel is usually carried out in the austenite temperature range,1"7 as this is the one of greatest interest with respect to industrial hot working. However, a disadvantage of testing in the austenite range is that the hot-worked structure is destroyed by the phase transformations taking place during cooling. The present study was therefore carried out in the ferritic temperature range, and the hot-worked substructures were preserved by rapid quenching after deformation. The substructural results will be described in a separate paper, and the present communication is restricted to the strain rate/stress/temperature relationship observed during hot working. The results of hot-compression testing are usually given in the form of true stress/true strain curves, with a different curve for each temperature/strain rate ~ornbination.',~,~ Sometimes simple algebraic equations are fitted to the curves, so that certain extrapolations or interpolations can be performed.1'2'5 These equations are, however, devoid of mechanistic interpretations. The present study was undertaken to show that hot compression can be described by an equation of the type used in creep studies. That is, it will be shown that the temperature dependence of the strain rate in hot working is well-represented by an Arrhenius term, with an activation energy similar to that for creep. Also it will be seen that the stress dependence of the strain rate is similar to that for creep EXPERIMENTAL METHOD AND MATERIALS The investigation was carried out with the following three ferrous materials: 1) Armco iron; 2) Armco iron with 0.26 pct Mn; 3) 2.8 pct Si steel. The first two materials were utilized for investigations performed in the temperature range 600" to 800°C; the last one was used for tests at temperatures from 600" to 1000°C. The materials were of commercial purity,* as shown in Table I. Cylinders of five different sizes were prepared by strain annealing. The resulting mean grain diameter was 3 mm in the 1-in. Armco iron and 2 mm in the other sizes and grades. Different ratios of diameter/height were used to enable the determination of the coefficient of friction. The specimen faces were provided with concentric grooves, which acted as lubricant holders during compression, as recommended by English and ~ackofen' and others.2'9 Powdered glass lubricants were applied to the samples before hot compression to decrease friction and barreling, following the practice of previous investigator~.~~~~~~~~ Different mixtures of glass powder were used for each temperature, after the determination of suitable compositions by experiment.'' Equipment for Hot Compression. Hot-compression tests were carried out on an adapted 150-ton vertical hydraulic extrusion press and also on a modified high-temperature creep machine. The modified extrusion press was used for temperatures up to 800°C. The following items were added to the press: a) a high-temperature furnace with built-in upper and lower platens; and b) a transmission assembly, which permitted the attainment of logarithmically decreasing crosshead speeds. Certain roof shales in coal mines deteriorate upon exposure to the atmosphere, causing difficulties in the mining operations and adding to the cost. This report presents the results of both field investigations, in a West Virginia mine, and laboratory studies on the effects of atmospheric moisture on roof shales. Based on these observations a conceptual procedure is presented on how shale deterioration might be predicted during exploration, and guidelines are given as to how air tempering or conditioning chambers may be designed to reduce moisture effects. Recommendations for further studies are included. An annotated bibliography of the literature constitutes the second volume.

This paper presents the experience gained and the lessons learned over the last decade within the numerous offshore foundation projects undertaken in the offshore waters of Denmark and Belgium by COWI A/S of Denmark. This experience derives from the close collaboration with, and interaction between the owners, contractors, and engineers in the various stages of project development. In turn, the experience draws on COWI's experience within foundation of large bridges world wide over half a century. Focus is on two pioneering gravity base foundation projects: ? Nysted in Denmark, currently the largest offshore windfarm worldwide with 72 Nos Bonus 2.3 MW turbines in water depths up to 10 m in the relatively benign inner Danish waters ? Thornton Bank in Belgium, where the first phase - comprising 6 Nos REpower 5MW-turbines of a total of 60 - are planned to be built in the rough North Sea in water depths exceeding 25 m.

Friction stir welding (FSW) generates complex microstructures in the nugget and thermomechamically affected zones (TMAZ) that have led to diverse explanations. However, consideration as an extension of microstructure development in piercing/extrusion can lead to a better understanding of flow patterns and microstructures during FSW. Furthermore, the intense strains in the nugget/TMAZ can be interpreted by comparison with ultra-high strains in torsion that exhibit dynamic recovery as extending into regions with high angle boundaries strongly serrated with spacing near the subgrain size defined by the high temperature. The subgrain diameter and extrusion pressure have been shown to be dependent on the Zener-Hollomon parameter Z (=t exp(Q/RT), Q activation energy, R gas constant) combining temperature T and strain rate E in the same mariner as for torsion and compression. Moreover, such tests exhibited steady state stress os above a certain strain Es (rising as Z increases) in which T, , subgrain diameter and dislocation spacing remain constant. Due to the subgrain boundaries (SGB, low angle <5°, i.e.,LAB), continually rearranging by migration, decomposition and reformation, the subgrains remain equiaxed in elongating grains, whose boundaries (GB) become serrated as they migrate to absorb SGB. As confirmed by straining in torsion at constant T and Z. , more subgrains bordering the greater GB area have several high-angle facets (HAB) ; these small cellular regions with a mixture of HAB and LAB facets are designated HAB-subgrains. As serrations in neighboring grain boundaries impinge, the grains pinch off becoming shorter; this occurs at higher strains as subgrain size decreases with rising Z. The pinching-off makes the neighbors thicker so the grains never become thinner than about two subgrain diameters. In conjunction with such geometric dynamic recrystallization (gDRX), GB&apos;s undergo a net migration into grains with denser substructure, enlarging those with larger subgrains. Consequently a better name has been proposed: grain dimensioning dynamic recovery (gDRV).

The Bureau of Mines has developed an improved earth resistivity field system which employs a novel technique for obtaining null measurements. The instrument is designed to operate reliably in high-noise environments such as those found in the vicinity of operating mines. The system consists of a low-frequency transmitter, a sensitive receiver and an external battery pack, each in its own case to provide protection from the elements. The receiver and transmitter units have self-contained recharge-able batteries to supply power to the circuitry and separate built-in battery chargers that operate on standard 115 Vac power. The system is portable and simple to operate. Measurement accuracy, reliability, and dynamic range are superior to most commercially available equipment even though less time and effort is required to make null readings. Unlike some commercial systems, long integration times are not required to enhance signal-to-noise ratio in areas of high background noise.

The results of a pile load test on a 1200 mm dia and 25 m long bored Cast-in-situ pile in soft rock is reported. The subsoil has a high N value of above 60 from 7 m to 21 m. The soft rock was observed below 21 m and N value exceeded 100. The theoretical calculations showed that the safe carrying capacity will be about 410 t. But the actual load test on the pile indicated that the allowable load is only about 140 t. This is attributed to the fact that the soil is cemented and loses strength due to remoulding caused by pile installation. It is concluded that great care should be exercised in determining the carrying capacity of piles in cemented soils and soft rocks and that &apos;N&apos; value alone should not be used.

The development of commercial natural-gas reserves in the Michigan stray sandstone horizon of central Michigan during the past few years has resulted in expansion of the natural-gas industry in that State. The location of the natural- gas reserves of Michigan in the general vicinity of domestic and industrial markets is of economic importance, and in supplying these markets with natural gas a reasonable knowledge of the extent and availability of the reserves is needed in formulating regulations for drilling gas wells and producing natural gas, in analyzing the feasibility of projects to construct natural-gas transmission lines, in promoting and developing markets for the domestic and industrial consumption of natural gas, and In solving many engineering and economic problems common to the natural-gas industry. The development of the natural-gas industry in Michigan has been related closely to the development of oil production. The potential oil production of Michigan is comparable with that in most of the eastern oil-producing States. The development of oil production probably will continue, especially in the central Michigan Basin area; and as wells are drilled to deep horizons in the search for oil, more knowledge will be obtained of the gas reserves in formations above the oil- bearing horizons.

Energy efficiency has become significant due to cost and environmental considerations. Comminution and material handling have been identified as the two most energy intensive processes in mining. The objective of this work was to evaluate truck-shovel energy efficiency strategies using discrete event modeling. Energy audits and time and motion studies were conducted at a surface coal mine to acquire data. A discrete event simulation model of truck-shovel operations was built in Arena® and validated with the field data. The model was used to evaluate the effect of using a larger shovel, and optimizing truck-shovel matching on fuel efficiency. The results indicate that using a larger excavator increases the fuel efficiency of the operation while optimizing truck-shovel matching does not. However, using a larger shovel will lead to under-utilization of the shovel. This work shows the potential benefits of using discrete event simulation to model energy efficiency of mining operations.

In most cases, slope movement monitoring data are collected on a temporal basis and displacement or velocity is plotted against time in order to assist the engineer to make judgements about slope behaviour. Once an unusual behaviour pattern has been established, the data are then analysed to estimate when the key inflection points occur in the data, when the slope movements start to accelerate and, ultimately, when the slope is expected to collapse. The identification of these inflection points is sometimes difficult to achieve with the naked eye. This paper presents the application of a trend analysis technique, known as cusums, to assist in this process. The authors have presented a range of data from various real life examples which highlight the effectiveness of the cusums technique. A key aspect of the cusums technique is the use of a constant (K) against which data trends are assessed. This constant is best derived from slope performance data at each site, as each rock mass will behave in its own unique way. The authors have experienced slopes that have had threshold values ranging from 0.1mm/day through to 10mm/day, and therefore a conservative approach should be adopted when assessing the performance of slopes.

[The Sectional Committee on Classification of Coals, functioning under the sponsorship of the American Society for Testing Materials and the rules of the American Standards Association, in its 1934 report recommended to the American Society for Testing-Materials that Specifications for Classification of Coals by Rank be adopted as tentative. These specifications, slightly modified as recommended by the Sectional Committee, in its 1935 report,6 wore approved as tentative standards by the society in 1935. The specifications rover the classification of coals according; to their degree of metamorphism, or progressive alteration, in the natural eerie s from lignite to anthracite. The basic scheme of classification is according to fired carbon and calorific value (expressed in B.t.u.) calculated to the mineral-matter-free basis. The higher-rank coals are classified according to fixed carbon on the dry basis, and the lower-rank coals according to B.t.u. on the moist basis, that is, containing its natural bed moisture but free of visible surface moisture. Agglutinating and weathering indices arc used to differentiate between certain adjacent groups.]

A Mark IV surface force apparatus (SF A) was used to conduct direct force measurements in dodecylamine hydrogenchloride collector solution between mica surfaces at varying pHs. It has been found that the long-range hydrophobic forces reach a maximum at pH 9.5, which also corresponds to the maxima attained by the contact angle and flotation recovery of quartz. The charge densities are comparable on both mica and quartz surfaces (0.40-0.48 run2), making it possible to draw conclusions on the flotation of quartz from the direct force measurements conducted on mica. Therefore, it may be suggested that the maximum flotation recovery of quartz m the range of pH 8.0-10.3 may be attributed to the appearance of long-range hydrophobic force, which in turn can be related to the formation of a close-packed monolayer (or hemimicelle) in the presence of neutral amines formed as a result of hydrolysis.

In a certain sense, the explosives industry began in the 13th century with the invention of black powder, which is an intimate mixture of sulfur, carbon black or charcoal, and potassium or sodium nitrate. For several centuries thereafter, black powder was the sole general purpose energetic material, serving as an igniter, propelling charge, bursting charge, and blasting agent. By today’s standards, black powder is totally inadequate for the latter three functions, but its use continues as an igniter for propellant charges because of its unique ability to ignite and burn under ambient conditions. The history of the development of black powder was reviewed by Rose (1980).

Pilot Hole ?X? was drilled to test the formations through which the ventilation shaft for the proposed U.S.B.M. demonstration oil shale mine will be drilled. Five permeability tests were performed at various stratigraphic levels within this hole. The test method used was that of pumping fluids out of the hole for three hours, using the air lift method, followed by a three-hour period where the recharge was observed. Transmissivity and permeability results were determined from these test data. The test procedure used is described and supporting data for the hydrologic tests are provided.

Six examples of the peritectoid transformation were selected from the literature and studied by the method of isothermal transformation. The kinetics and mechanisms of five of the examples are presented as TTT diagrams and photomicrographs. The exist-enc- of a peritectoid in the sixth case is doubtful. ALTHOUGH the peritectoid transformation per se has been known for many years, no precise published data exist concerning the kinetics or mechanisms involved in transformations of this type, except for the brief treatment by Rhines, et al. 1,10 Bearing in mind the fact that investigations of recent years are uncovering more and more peritectoids and suspected peritectoids, a thorough study of the well-established peritectoids appeared to be in order. It was for this reason that a study of the kinetics and morphological mechanisms of six binary peritectoids was undertaken. The six peritectoids selected from the literature for study were those reported at 7.02 wt pct Al-Ag, 26.0 wt pct Sb-Cu, 30.5 wt pct Sb-Cu, 32.3 wt pct Sn-Cu, 8.35 wt pct Si-Cu, and 21.2 wt pct Al-Cu. These selections were based on availability and purity of components, ease of preparation and heat-treatment, and estimated reliability of the available equilibrium diagrams in the regions of interest. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys used in this investigation were induction melted in electrode-grade graphite and chill-cast in cast-iron split molds. In all cases, the alloys were so brittle that they could easily be broken into samples weighing 1 or 2 g. Chemical analyses showed that the alloys used were close to the respective peritectoid compositions reported in the literature and that the impurity levels were low in all cases. Metallographic examination showed uniform distributions of phases in all samples, indicating uniformity of composition in the samples studied. Isothermal transformation studies were carried out in fused-salt media, using the familiar inter-rupted-quench method. Uniformity of temperature in the salt baths was maintained by continuous stirring with a stainless-steel agitator. On the basis of actual observations of the temperature fluctuations, the estimated temperature control was + 10C for the Ag-Al and Cu-Sb alloys and ±30C for the Cu-Sn, Cu-Si, and Cu-Al alloys. The accuracy of all temperature measurements was estimated to be ±1°C. It was found necessary to mount metallographic specimens of the Ag-Al alloy in cold-curing methyl methacrylate, since the temperatures encountered in mounting in bakelite or lucite caused an appreciable degree of transformation to the ß phase. For the other alloys, wood-flour-filled bakelite mounts were used to avoid extraneous X-ray diffraction lines during the later examination of the metallographic specimens on a Norelco Geiger-counter d if f r ac tomete r. In the X-ray diffraction procedure, agreement between the published diffraction patterns and those obtained in this study was good. This was particularly important for phase identification, since the literature contained little in the way of micrograph description in some cases. Etching of the silver-aluminum alloy for metallographic examination was done by swabbing with either of the following reagents: 1) 10 g CrO3, 1 g (NH4), SO2, 0.5 g NH4NO3, 100 ml H2O, or 2) 10 ml NH4OH, 1 ml 20 pct KOH, 4 ml 3 pct H2O2, 5 ml H2O. The other alloys were etched with the usual bichromate etchant: 2 g K2Cr2O7, 1.5 g NaC1, 8 ml conc. H2SO4, 100 ml H20 (swabbed vigorously). EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A) The Ag-Al peritectoid at 7.02 wt pct Al— The phase equilibrium involved in this peritectoid is shown in Fig. I.2 The phase boundaries in the vicinity of the peritectoid were most comprehensively established by Hume-Rothery, et al,3 who placed the equilibrium temperature at 448 °C and the equilibrium compositions of the a ß&apos; and y phases at 6.11, 7.02, and 7.24 wt pct Al, respective The alloy used in this study analyzed4 6.95 wt pct A making it slightly hypoperitectoid according to the accepted equilibrium diagram. "An approach slab is the roadway segment that immediately follows a bridge intended to provide a smooth transition between the two elements. Some approach slabs have developed rough rideability with time due to differential settlement between the roadway embankment and the bridge. Soils in south Louisiana are generally poor and highly compressible and, therefore, pile-supported approach slabs were occasionally used. Timber piles of variable lengths are driven into the soft soils where no appreciable toe support exists. This resulted in the soils both supporting loads through shaft resistance and yet experiencing long-term consolidation settlement. Field testing and review of the records of over 120 approach slabs constructed in south Louisiana yielded the conclusion that their performance is primarily governed by negative skin friction (downdrag) imposed on the relatively short timber piles. A software (TU-DRAG) was developed to evaluate the deflection profile of a pile-supported approach slab based on its geometry and conditions of the underlying soils. It evaluates the effect of dragload considering the number and spacing of the piles at each transverse row and their variable lengths along the approach slab. TU-DRAG was utilized in the design of two transportation related projects which have been in service for more than 10 years.INTRODUCTIONThe problem of differential settlement at bridge approaches or “the bump at the bridge” has been recognized for many years. Research studies (1986, 1989, 1997, 2009 and 2013) by the Transportation Research Board (TRB) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) provided comprehensive evaluations of the performance of bridge approach slabs by assessing their field conditions and construction and maintenance records. Various states have also performed their own studies to investigate the performance of bridge approach slabs. The studies considered various types of structures including soil- and pile-supported approach slabs, integral bridge abutments and open-end abutments. Recommendations were provided for the design of new structures and for maintaining and repairing existing structures. Guidelines were offered regarding tolerable movements of bridges and their foundations based on measurements of vertical and horizontal movements of 580 bridges Moulton (1986). Vertical and horizontal movements greater than 102 mm (4 inches) and 51 mm (2 inches), respectively, were considered intolerable. Tolerable limits for angular distortion (differential settlement to span length) were suggested to be 1/250 and 1/200 for continuous and simple spans, respectively. It was reported that a differential settlement greater than 13 mm (0.5 inch) at the bridge interface would be sufficient to constitute a “bump” requiring mitigation."

Nitrogenase activity (C2H2 reduction) was found to be associated with the following grasses in the field: Agropyron dasystachyum, Agropyron smithii, Aristida purpurea, Oryzopsis hymenoides and Stipa comata. Uptake of fixed nitrogen was also demonstrated for these grasses. Two unidentified nitrogen fixing bacteria were isolated, one from Stipa comata and one from Aristida purpurea. Cynodon dactylon and Agropyron cristatum were successfully inoculated with the unknown isolate obtained from Stipa comata. The inoculated plants exhibited nitrogenase activity (C2 H2 reduction) whereas uninoculated controls gave negative results.

"A Ti- Ni intermetallic compound could be formed rapidly from Ti and Ni powder compact with SHS process. Microgravity experiments using a drop shaft are carried out, This report shows the effect of microgravity or high gravity on formability of an intermetallic compound. It is concluded that the specimen forms a porous and nearly amorphous alloy by rapid cooling under microgravity but with rapid cooling under high gravity after microgravity, the specimen forms a uniform and dense structure with better crystallinity.IntroductionTi - Ni inter1etallic co1pounds have been produced and have beco1e si1ilar to the a1orphous and porous structure as a result of the SHS (Self Propagating High-te1perature Synthesis) process under 1icrogravity. SHS process is being applied to the synthesis of cera1ics and inter1etallic co1pounds (1). The technique is characterized by a large a1ount of heat being emitted within a very short ti1e interval as regards the sistering reaction. One SHS process, acco1panying 1elting by a reaction was observed, and that was due to the quick heating of a Ni-Ti co1pact containing 50 ato1ic percent of Ti under a low pressure (2-4). In this report, we have researched the use a drop shaft which is 1ore effective during a short ti1e under 1icrogravity and high-gravity, so as to obtain high dense speci1ens with the exception of porous specimens (5). Mechanical properties of each specimen were esti1ated from these 1icro-structures with a discussion about the effect of changing gravity regarding 1elting and solidification of the Ti-Ni intermetallic comounds."
