Laboratory model test results for the ultimate uplift capacity of square and circular foundations in saturated clay (ø=0) have been presented. The results of the present model tests for square foundations have been compared with the previously published laboratory model tests results on circular foundations. Based on the comparison, it appears that the critical embedment ratio of square and circular foundations increases from about 3 for soft clays to about 7 for medium to stiff clays. By using the experimental results, an empirical procedure has been suggested for determination of the ultimate uplift capacity of belled pier foundations in saturated clay.

This report presents a description of the Prototype Demonstration Vehicle developed under U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. JO 366003, "Improving Man Transit Safety". This vehicle was constructed to assess the feasibility of a set of equipment related guidelines which were drafted in Phase I of the same contract. State-of-the-Art improvements were embodied in such areas as collision survivability, occupant comfort, and multiple mode (on and off rail) operation. The electric battery-powered vehicle carries a twelve man section crew at speeds up to 12 mph. The description of the demonstration vehicle is presented in Volume I. Safety Guidelines are presented in Volume II.

THIS has been a much-neglected branch of engineering. With the majority of industries labour is the chief item of trouble and expense. Anything that will reduce trouble and increase efficiency is well worth considering. It is only of recent years that any attempt has been made on a scientific basis to improve conditions sporadic attempts having been made from time to time, privately and by law. Some have been successful, others unsuccessful not necessarily the fault of those who initiated the ideas, though naturally mistakes were made in some cases for want of experience, but those whom it was desired to benefit were not always prepared for the change, and by their distrust hampered schemes instead of assisting them.Man power is generally more expensive than machinery, though there are exceptions, such as when a small amount of work has to be done in a place where machinery does not exist, and it would not pay to instal any or where labour is cheap, and skilled workmen are scarce as in some tropical countries. When machinery is first introduced it generally causes the suspicion that it will deprive men of their work. It may cause men to vary the conditions of their work, and in some individual cases, when men are unable to conform to changed circumstances it may result in a certain amount of hardship; but, after all, the less competent must not hold back progress for the general good. Besides, changes as a rule do not take place suddenly, so old hands can generally find work at their particular calling 'till nature requires them to retire. Coking time was investigated as a function of coal properties, carbonization parameters, and the interactions between these variables. The results indicate that coal properties and carbonization conditions interact to influence the coking time, and these interactions may be determined quantitatively. Prediction equations were developed and used to simulate the effects of bulk density, flue temperature, and oven width on coking times for coals having a wide range of properties. The data presented provide additional information on the carbonization process to permit the coke oven operator to maintain closer control of coke production and coke uniformity.

In contrast to pyrometallurgy's 6000year history in metals production, hydrometallurgy is of relatively recent origin. The earliest reference to it was in the 16th century, with the first applications to copper in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the 19th century, increased demands for pure metal resulted in the development of electrolytic refining, and early in this century electrowinning. The rapid growth in copper production in the 20th century, particularly in the United States and Chile, stimulated the development of new technology for leaching and for the recovery of copper from leach solutions. In the past 25 years, solvent extraction has become a major factor by permitting novel leaching technology that produces dilute or complex solutions. In addition, solvents other than sulfuric acid, and chemical methods for precipitating copper metal are now of increasing interest. These are trends that should grow in importance with the need to process lower grade and more complex materials. The evolution of copper hydrometallurgy is reviewed. Key factors in recent major developments are presented with details of specific operations and with trends for the future indicated. The relative importance of copper hydrometallurgy is compared with that of pyrometallurgy in the light of probable changes in ore supplies and character.

INTRODUCTION "On many projects, the tendency is to drop interest and support of the geological service as soon as it seems safe. That . . . is a short-sighted policy . . . It would be of further service perhaps to learn whether predictions were reasonably true to life." --C.P. Berkey, 1938 (3) This paper quantitatively compares predicted and encountered shear zone size and location and rock type for tunnels in the Colorado Mineral Belt. The Colarado Mineral Belt is composed of igneous formations with associated metamorphic rocks and faulting. As such, it represents the most complex of provinces for at-grade predictions (27). Shear zone and rock type data are assumed to be statistically homogeneous because of the common geology of the seven tunnels. It is often felt by geologists and engineers that the amount of information from which a geological model is created is so low that any statistical inferences are unstable. In other words, the addition of new data may drastically alter the means and variances suggested by the model. Therefore, predictions are rarely couched in quantitative statistical terms but modified with "probably," "most likely" or "possibly." Comparison of predicted and encountered data from past geological models will permit the "probably's" to be quantified and distilled from the art of geological prediction. To date, two other studies of the validity of predictions have been made (26 and 16). Together, these two studies indicate that

Thank you for the invitation to address The AusIMM Young LeadersÆ Conference here today. When I first saw the conference theme û æadvancing technologies and their future applications in the mining industryÆ û my interest was sparked because there is little doubt that technology and technological advances will determine the relevance of this industry in the future. And the people seated here today are major players in determining the minerals industryÆs destiny.During my 20-year association with the mining industry, I have observed a number of significant changes that have been delivered as a result of the vision of technical specialists. These changes have built a more competitive industry, a more socially acceptable industry and most importantly an industry with ever-improving safety performance. The purpose of my address is to attempt to provide a context and foundation for other presenters over the following two days. Today, I wish to try to answer the question, æWhy do we invest in new technology in the mining industry?Æ, via: a brief history lesson, a review of the needs of the business, a look at the process for improvement, and finally an example from WMC ResourcesÆ current technology portfolio. I would like to take a very brief walk back in time. During the iron and bronze ages, whilst our ancestors IÆm sure never spoke the phrase ænecessity is the mother of inventionÆ, I am sure they lived by it. Undoubtedly more so than we do today. The roots of geology, mining and extractive metallurgy grew out of the need for better tools in order to get access to the basic necessities of life. It was their superior ability to generate and deliver these ætechnologyÆ improvements that underpinned great civilisations such as the Egyptians, Romans and Incas. The application of mineral technology improvements by these civilisations was crucial to their success, it was their competitive advantage at the time. Many historical texts include detailed descriptions of both mining and processing fundamentals that formed the basis of many of todayÆs operations and processes. However, it is technological improvements to these fundamentals, as well as the development of new technologies, that have preserved the fundamentals as viable options for the industry today. Even in my time in the industry, there have been substantial improvements in the way business processes operate. When I first started working in a gold mine in WA in the late 1980s, the office had one PC (a 286 processor). All data was managed by paper and then often re-typed into other databases. Electronic mine design and process control was in its infancy. Today, massive amounts of data are recorded, analysed and acted upon almost without any human interaction. Our industry today has far different challenges than those described by Argricola. These are many and diverse, but new technologies are required to address three distinct classes of need: 1. Societal needs: physical needs for food, shelter, recreation and leisure; community and political needs for less waste, less emissions, better safety and working conditions, less energy consumption and sustainability. 2. Individual needs: intellectual needs to create innovative technical and organisational ideas. 3. Wealth generation needs: investor needs for maximising operating efficiency and value growth. Each new technology, to varying degrees, fulfils one or all of these needs. In many cases, the driver of a technological development was to fulfill only one of these needs, but after it was implemented, the development actually fulfilled each need. The amount of airborne respirable dust generated from break- age of different coals varies widely. This research was conducted to identify the facets of airborne respirable dust liberation from the coal product. Laboratory crushing experiments were conducted on a range of low to high volatile bituminous coals to investigate the various factors influencing airborne respirable dust generation. Bituminous coal samples from 8 mines (5 U.S. and 3 Polish) were uniformly prepared and processed through a double roll crusher located in a low air velocity wind tunnel. Experimental factors studied included inherent coal seam constituents, specific energy of crushing, product size characteristics, dust cloud electrostatic field, and specific quantity of airborne respirable dust generated. The results of this investigation build upon previously published results, which indicated that a combination of several factors are associated with the generation of airborne respirable dust. One factor involved is the effect of coal rank, described by the inherent moist fuel ratio, on the product size characteristics, defined by Schuhmann size function parameters. However, since coals of high moist fuel ratio (high rank) are generally more extensively cleated, it is suggested in the present work that the degree of cleating is directly responsible for the quantity of respirable-sized particles produced in the crushed product material for eastern U.S. coals. This is implied by the relationship of ash content and at least one mineral constituent (pyrite, determined from pyritic sulfur analysis) to the percentage of airborne respirable dust. To validate this hypothesis, a description is offered that is based on known coal petrography. Another key factor is the effect of air dry loss moisture in the coal seam on the breakage-induced electrostatic field of airborne dust. The air dry loss moisture factor appears to control the amount of airborne respirable dust that is liberated from the product. The resultant effect of these factors is that different percentages of coal particles smaller than 10 µm are dispersed as airborne respirable dust with a well-defined peak in the normalized airborne respirable dust for a narrow range of air dry loss moisture - ash ratios. A clear delineation of coals, based on well-known proximate analysis characteristics, that generate the most respirable dust appears to be possible. Since Reserve Mining Co. began commercial operations at Silver Bay, MN, some 25 years ago, major improvements in taconite processing technology have become available. In addition, significant new government standards have been imposed on industrial operations. By implementing a $370-million modernization program, Reserve was able to accomplish two major company objectives: the quality of concentrates produced from the Peter Mitchell mine has improved, and the operation meets both present and foreseeable environmental standards. Process modifications at Reserve were designed to: •Reduce the pellet silica content from 9% to 5%; •Increase the pellet iron content from 62.5% to 65.8%; •Implement a tailings disposal system utilizing "best available technology" water quality controls; and •Reduce air emissions by installing "best available technology" air emission controls. By adding dry cobbing, fine screening, and flotation to the concentrating process, pellet silica content has been reduced; the process reclaims and reuses all process waters; all tailings are stored in a zero discharge tailings basin; and all air emission standards are being met. Initial Beneficiation at Silver Bay Reserve's Peter Mitchell mine at Babbitt, MN, is on the eastern end of the Biwabik iron formation. The open-pit mine is approximately 16 km long, 0.8 km wide, and presently has a maximum depth of about 50 m. Principal constituents of the ore body are magnetite, quartz, and iron-magnesium silicates. The company's large commercial plant began operating at Silver Bay, 75 rail km from the mine, in 1955. Facilities have historically had the capacity to process 31.5 Mt/a of taconite, containing an average 24% magnetic iron, into 11 Mt/a of iron ore pellets. Reserve's initial beneficiation process-which existed up to early 1979-consisted of two crushing stages at the Babbitt mine site, two additional crushing and screening stages at Silver Bay, grinding in a conventional rod-ball¬regrind mill circuit, size classification with cyclones, and concentration with magnetic and hydraulic separators. Concentrate produced by that circuit assayed 65% iron and 8.5% silica, with a screen analysis of 94% -44 µm, and a surface area of 9300 cm2/cm3. Pellets produced from this concentrate assayed 62.5% iron and 9% silica (dry basis). Construction began in 1977 to modify Reserve's operation. Process modifications were designed from pilot scale operations that had been operated and researched by Reserve for more than 10 years. There were two design restraints imposed on the process: economic constraints that Reserve continue to use much of the existing processes and structures in the new operation; and a substantial number of government-imposed permit constraints. In effect, the tailings process was designed first and then a concentrating process was developed that would "fit" the tailings disposal system. Operation of the modified process began in June 1980. Crushing Remains Unchanged No changes in process flow were made at either the Babbitt mine and crushing plant or at the Silver Bay fine crusher. Gyratory crushers reduce run-of-mine taconite to -90 mm-diam at the mine. Taconite is then transported to Silver Bay by intra-plant railroad. There are 10 fine crushing lines. Each consists of a double deck screen, followed by a heavy duty short head crusher, a second double deck screen, and second short head crusher. All screen undersize material bypasses the crushing lines, resulting in an open circuit crushing process. Fine crusher product is approximately 98% - 20 mm, 80% -12 mm, and 50% -10 mm in diameter. Each fine crusher line processes about 400 t/h of crude taconite. Cobbing Provides Aggregate for Tailings Dams The first major process change was the addition of dry cobbing, a dry magnetic separation step between the fine crusher and concentrator. Dry cobbing serves two major purposes in the new process. Its principal function is to provide large volumes of dry coarse aggregate for use in construction of tailings dams. This process rejects about 20% of the fine crusher product as tailings with a size analysis of 98% -20 mm and 50% - 10 mm. These tailings are free draining and have high frictional shear strengths-two key requirements for dam building aggregates. Fine crusher product is conveyed to a new dry cobbing building. Here crushed ore is discharged into one of two 30-minute capacity surge bins. Crushed ore is withdrawn by 12 constant speed conveyor belts; each discharges 500 t of crushed taconite into a dry cobbing machine. Each machine consists of a 3-m-long riffle splitter and two vari-

International regulations exist to manage the concentrations of mycotoxins such as Ochratoxin A (OTA) and deoxynivalenol (DON) in grains and prevent health risks from excessive exposure to OTA and DON. Since the permitted levels of these mycotoxins are very low (existing maximum levels are in the range of 5 ppb for OTA and 1–2 ppm for DON), sampling for these mycotoxins is potentially challenging. Given that the distribution of infected kernels in a consignment of wheat can be highly heterogeneous, detection by current sampling methods is subject to a high variance. Furthermore, the concentrations of mycotoxins in individual kernels vary over orders of magnitude, intensifying the heterogeneity of the bulk grain.In these circumstances, there is much interest in developing sampling plans that inform regulatory agencies, and mitigate the risk of misclassifying grain shipments as compliant or non-compliant within the global grain trade, when correctly implemented.Experimental data from laboratory and field studies describing individual wheat kernel concentrations of OTA and DON were combined with experimental data describing the variance due to the analytical methods used for OTA and DON to calculate the sampling distribution for wheat having various levels of contamination. This work has focused on quantifying the heterogeneity of samples at the point of submission for analysis and within subsequent sample preparation to arrive at total sampling distributions that include uncertainties due to the intrinsic heterogeneity and the analytical uncertainties. In 1986, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines Studied 25,340 acres of the 28,960-acre Twelve Mile Creek Wilderness Study Area (OR-003-162) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Malheur County, OR, about 30 miles northwest of McDermitt, NV. The area is underlain by thick sequences of rhyolite to with lesser amounts of andesite and basalt flows. Bureau of Mines personnel reviewed pertinent literature, mining records, and examined the study area for possible mineral resources in geologically favorable sites. There are no organized mining districts and no record of past or current mining activity. Based on sample results, published literature and field observations, there are no identified mineral resources.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, KCM Nkana, Zambia The Nkana smelter was initially commissioned in 1931, with two reverberatory furnaces, two Peirce-Smith converters, and blister copper casting facilities. Reverberatory furnaces were the mainstay of production up until 1994, when an El Teniente Converter (CT) was installed to upgrade reverberatory furnace matte to white metal, prior to converting in conventional Peirce-Smith (PS) converters. In 2000, a decision was taken to increase the proportion of concentrate smelted in the CT by introduction of bone-dry concentrate injection through the tuyeres. A flash dryer with a nominal capacity of 1 200 metric tons per day of dry product, and associated tuyere injection system was commissioned in March 2004. Based on the projected concentrate arisings from the KCM mines into the future, as seen in 2004, it was decided to develop the CT to be the primary smelting vessel at Nkana, to handle a minimum of 1 250 tons per day of concentrate, and to operate only one reverberatory furnace in slag-cleaning mode pending a full evaluation of alternative slag-cleaning technologies. The anticipated cathode production from Nkana was to be in the range 140 to 150 000 tons per annum. This paper details the outcomes from trials that were carried out in August and September 2004, using two reverberatory furnaces for slag cleaning. The results of these trials, plus further work in October and November, provided confidence to move to one reverberatory furnace for slag cleaning in December 2004. With the advent of Vedanta as the majority shareholder in KCM at the end of 2004, the approach has been to maximize the available smelting capacity. Currently, two reverberatory furnaces and the CT are on-line, with the higher silica concentrates going to the reverberatory furnaces with an appropriate amount of pyrite, and the cleaner concentrates going to the CT. Expansion of the smelter is currently under investigation.

The GPM Gold Project is located in Armenia, and consists of an open cut mine at Zod, near the Azerbaijan border, and a CIL processing plant at Ararat near the Turkish border. Mining at Zod commenced in 1976, and focused on near surface oxide ores, which overlay deeper refractory sulphides. Historical mining has now almost depleted the oxide ores, and the sulphide content of ore delivered to the processing plant at Ararat is increasing. Gold and silver recoveries through the Ararat plant were declining steadily.GeoProMining, the owners of the project, have expanded the Ararat facility to deal with the increasing sulphide content in the ore. In 2014, GeoProMining refurbished an existing concentrator on site to recover a sulphide concentrate from the ore, and have constructed an Albion ProcessTM plant to oxidize the refractory concentrate. Glencore Technology (GT) provided the Albion ProcessTM plant as a technology package.In July 2014, the progress of the GPM Gold Project Albion ProcessTM Plant was reported (Hourn, Voigt and Turner, 2014). At the time of writing, the construction of the plant was nearly complete. This paper presents an update of project progress, covering commissioning and ramp up of the GPM Gold Project.The commissioning phase occurred over June to August 2014, which included an M3,000 IsaMillTM fine grinding plant, a 6 tph limestone milling plant, a 60 tpd vacuum pressure swing adsorption oxygen plant, a 10 m residue thickener and a 12 tph Albion ProcessTM oxidative leach plant. The smelting plant and equipment at Mount Isa, as originally designed and built, was described by J. M. Callow (1) *.F. A. Forward (2) described alterations and additions to the plant and discussed the metallurgy of mixed carbonate-sulphide concentrates at Mount Isa, prior to 1933, in the Proceedings of this Institute.In 1933, A. F. McAskill (3) gave full mechanical details of the plant in a paper presented to the Institution of Engineers, Aust.FLOW SHEETSFig. No. 1 represents the present general flow sheet. Forward's (2) flow sheet is reproduced here as Fig. lA, and will serve for comparison in depicting subsequent deletions from, and alterations and additions to, the plant.Fig. No. 2 presents the daily tonnage flow sheet of 1939 practice.ALTERATIONS SINCE 1933General. Many changes in metallurgy and operation have taken place, particularly subsequent to March, 1935, when the treatment of a mixture of carbonate and sulphide ores was discontinued and the mill commenced operating on all-sulphide ore. This alteration brought about the elimination of gravity concentration-Jigs and Tables and resulted in the production of all-floatation concentrates of a very fine sizing. Refer Table No. 2, page?) Underground coal mining can cause seismic events. There is currently no way to predict such phenomena reliably, in particular stronger events. That is why, according to the current state of the art, empirical methods are employed in this field. Some assessment criteria, which relate to the geological and mining situation and either stimulate or rather help to avoid seismic events, are presented in this paper. These criteria are examined for a practical mining situation in Germany, with a view to estimate possible seismic events.

Studies have been carried out on the dead roasting of a copper-iron and a copper-nickel-iron sulfide concentrate, followed by segregation roasting with coal and leaching with either curpric sulfate in aqueous acetonitrile or cupric chloride in brine solution to preferentially solubilize copper. The effect of dead roasting and segregation roasting conditions on the overall leaching of copper and the separation of copper from iron and iron and nickel is reported. An excellent separation of copper from iron and a good separation of copper from iron and nickel can be obtained provided sulfur is removed to 0.5 per cent or less during the dead roast and provided the coal addition and temperature of the segregation roast are near the minima required for the segregation of copper.

Paper presented at conference and first published in preprint volume of: Risk assessment in the extractive industries, held in University of Exeter, 23-24 March 1994. London: IMM, 1994. Large, unpredicted ground movements resulting from open cast or underground mining present risks to the safety and economy of extractive industries. As large, sudden failures are usually preceded by small displacements at a much slower rate, the detection and monitoring of these minor changes to the ground surface provides a means of assessing the risks. It is recommended that a visual approach is often preferable to surveying or fixed instrumental measurements. An optical system has been devised, incorporating a 35 mm camera, which allows an immediate comparison on site between a colour transparency taken on a previous inspection and the scene it represents. The observer fuses the transparency stereoscopically with the directly viewed scene. The impression is close to that of normal vision except that differences in detail which have occurred since the transparency was taken are immediately obvious, enabling a qualitative assessment of changes to be made on site. If repeat photography is required it can be taken with exactly the same alignment and coverage. The two images are then available for office analysis using simple micro-photogrammetry
