This study focuses on the amosite mining region in South Africa and associated health effects, compared to other mined asbestos fiber types. Historically, dust and fiber levels were high in the amosite mills and mines, and many miners and members of the surrounding communities were exposed to the fibers. Research has shown that amosite produces both benign and malignant disease. Nevertheless, the mesotheliomagenic potential of amosite is several fold lower than crocidolite. The risk of disease associated with amosite exposure is difficult to quantify. Reasons for this include the scarcity of available information, including fiber measurements, and case ascertainment, as well as the juxtaposition of the amosite and crocidolite asbestos seams in South Africa. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Planning for the Macraes Extension project highlighted the need for additional tailings storage availability. The possible solution of developing new tailings impoundments in Northern Gully, in tum, led to concerns being expressed by the regUlatory authority over the assimilative capacity of Deepdell Creek. Philosophical differences over the appropriateness of applying a seepage model used to set standards in consents for the original project resulted in the company re-evaluating the whole monitoring system associated with tailings disposal and seepage control. Re-evaluation indicated problems arising from the existing in-stream water quality monitoring in respect of protection of the aquatic ecological system and verifiability of results. A new monitoring system was designed relocating the compliance monitoring point out of the stream and into the gully containing the tailings impoundments giving greater certainty of monitoring results to all parties and providing improved protection for the aquatic ecology of Deepdell Creek.

Tailings embankments can develop a high phreatic surface if the original design for the embankment does not include drainage facilities or if existing drainage facilities become ineffective. Subsequent raises can develop a seepage surface due to a high phreatic surface that can lead to stability problems. The U. S. Bureau of Mines amended contract J0100013 to initiate this study of horizontal drains in tailings embankments. This study developed a technique for determining the length of and spacing between parallel drains through the use of the finite element model UNSAT2. The analysis is based on the combined output of a vertical planar mesh and a horizontal planar mesh. The slot opening in the drain pipe and the length of the perforated section are determined from an analogy to water well design. The pipe diameter and gradient can be determined from Manning's equation. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first attempt at horizontal drain design using a finite element model. Additional research is recommended in this area.

Recent times have been extremely difficult for the resource sector, but it is crucial for our industry to maintain personal connections through good and bad times. These interactions include technical exchanges, and this is at the heart of MetSoc’s service to its members. The theme of this 53rd Conference of Metallurgists is Prosperity Through Process Advancements. There are thirteen symposia at this year’s conference mainly focused on processing from extractive fields, to materials and the environment. Supporting these topics are the plenary, poster session, and trade show plus opportunities for socializing at functions like the opening reception and the awards banquet.Many people have contributed to this conference, from the authors and presenters to the organizers and the generous sponsors. They are all gratefully acknowledged for their quality work over the last two years. A particular thank you to our student volunteers whom we hope will take advantage of their time at COM to network and to learn about this exciting industry.Again, thank you for being a part of this exciting conference of metallurgists. A variety of carbonaceous reducing materials are being used for the production of ferroalloys. Reductant materials include not just carbons such as coke, coal, char but also bio-carbons in form of charcoal produced from different types of wood. This paper discusses critical properties and reactions of carbonaceous materials and their significance in dictating reductant performance. Main considerations include among others, gasification of reductant, dissolution of carbon into molten metal, and direct reduction of slag by solid carbon. These are discussed in relation to material properties such as structural order, mineral matter content, composition, physical characteristics etc. A brief review of both conventional and novel approaches towards characterisation of carbonaceous materials has been included. Due to complexity and heterogeneity of carbonaceous reducing materials and a wide range of process requirements, the selection of the most appropriate reducing agent will depend on a number of considerations such as the availability of raw material and associated costs, product and process requirements and environmental aspects of waste gas emissions.

This report summarizes completed research pertaining to the reaction of human subjects exposed to Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) stressors during escape conditions (viz., resistance breathing, C02 breathing, hot air breathing, and static positive facepiece positive pressure breathing) and the development of an automated breathing and metabolic simulator (ABMS). Volume I contains summarizes of the studies performed under this contract. Volume II is an appendix which contains more detailed descriptions of these studies.

Cleaning and handling of fine coal are generally conceded to be more difficult problems than preparation of the coarser sizes. Increased mechanization in the coal-mining industry has, in general, resulted in an increased percentage of the fine sizes in the total coal mined. If the coal fines are cleaned by wet methods, the minus-1/16-inch square-mesh particles cause most of the sludge and slurry problems encountered in preparing wet coal. Equipment that separates coal from refuse on the basis of specific gravity is not efficient on sizes that, because of their fineness, do not follow the same laws of hindered settling as the larger particles. Probably the best solution of fine-coal cleaning problems is to use other methods, such as flotation, that utilize other physical characteristics than those determining hindered-settling ratios. Regarding the type of flotation known as the Elmore vacuum-flotation process there has been a scarcity of data and information available in this country. An investigation has therefore been made to obtain additional date and information on this process under laboratory conditions. During this investigation an effort has been made to evaluate the relative efficiencies of vacuum and mechanical laboratory froth flotation cells. The investigation included float-and-sink, screen-sizing, and flotation tests on 2 different samples of 14-mesh to 0 raw coal and an a sample of slurry from the settling-tank overflow of a typical washer. One raw-coal sample was obtained from the American bed and represented a type of coal that is relatively easy to clean. The other raw-coal sample was from the Mary lee bed and represented a type considered difficult to clean.

Automation technologies are increasingly envisaged to improve underground mining productivity. However, the technologies need to be used and adopted gradually in order to get the best benefits. This paper presents the technical and operational aspects of autoguided production vehicles at Brunswick Mine. During 2001 Noranda?s Brunswick Mine has successfully commissioned an automated haulage zone where two optically guided trucks transport ore from a remotely operated chute to two orepasses. Operational advantages include increased system capacity and enhanced safety and comfort for the operator. A novel impedance probe has been commissioned specifically for capturing fast dynamic information about filtration processes. It provides an attractive alternative to more complex measurement techniques in situations where the slurry system is primarily one-dimensional. The probe can monitor mud-line, slurry densification and drainage. Dynamic variations in cake permeability are obtained by combining dynamic mud-line information obtained with the probe and filtrate rate data derived from a leaf test apparatus. The measurements are re-viewed in relation to micro structural measurements obtained on iron ore filter cakes. The practical significance of these measurements for optimization of the filtration process is discussed.

In the summer of 1937 the authors began a series of time studies of the various processes employed in the production of crushed stone. These studies, made at quarries scattered over the eastern and southeastern parts of the United States, have not been completed, but to make results available to thee industry as early as possible it was decided to publish summaries of the studies made to January 1, 1939, as a series of progress reports. The first of these reports dealt with power-shovel loading and was issued as Report of Investigations 3461 in September 1939. The present circular discusses analyses of the time Studies of the haulage systems at the same quarries. OBJECT OF STUDY The pressure of business problems frequently requires the entire attention of quarry management and in consequence internal plant economies often are neglected, Also, operating officials absorbed in their local problems are prone to overlook possible economies that would attract attention immediately were they critically examining another plant. The authors felt that similar studies of many plants by impartial engineers -would disclose possibilities for cost reduction or greater efficiency in internal plant processes.

History and performance data of 17 water-injection projects in Cooke and Grayson Counties in north Texas are presented for the purpose of studying and comparing operating practices and oil-recovery techniques. Water is injected into Strawn and Canyon sands of Pennsylvanian age. The principal formation flooded is the Strawn, which ranges in depth from 725 to 6,900 ft in the projects covered. Estimated ultimate recoveries range as follows: Primary, 22 to 494 bbl per acre ft; and secondary; 63 to 296 bbl per acre ft. These figures represent the following percentages of original oil in place: Primary, 10 to 46 pct; and secondary, 8 to 23 pct. Shallower projects; 725 to 1,500 ft in depth, had higher average primary and secondary recoveries than did deeper projects. Crude-oil gravity, which ranges from 20° to 45° API, was not relatable to yield of secondary recovery oil. Analysis of the data indicates that five-spot injection patterns will yield the highest percentage of oil remaining at start of flooding; that is, 28.8 pct for five-spot injection patterns, compared with 20.8 pct for line-drive patterns and 11.6 pct for random patterns. Waterflooding in this area appears to be very successful. Secondary recoveries of most projects are expected to nearly equal primary recoveries.

In its largest product launch in company history, Cummins Engines welcomed more than 200 customers, vendors and media to witness the unveiling of its new QSK95 engine at its Seymour Engine Plant in Seymour, IN on Nov. 1. It took the efforts of 150 engineers to design the QSK95 and more than $100 million in investments to establish a new production line and test facility at Cummins? Seymour Engine plant. The result of these efforts is a new platform of engines that Cummins says will provide as much as 2,983 kW (4,000 hp) and will be the most powerful, high-speed diesel engine ever built.

Deep-sea mineral SMS deposits present some of the world’s most challenging conditions for drilling equipment. As robotic seabed drilling services mature so too the ways that clients engage with service providers to maximise their data requirements. This presentation reviews key considerations for planning and executing a successful seabeddrilling program in variable mineralised deposits. Some of the means of collaboration between robotic seabed drilling contractors and those hiring their services are explored; where improved efficiencies and recoveries over the period of a drilling programme could be achieved. Potentially new technology or methodology can be looked at to further improve these approaches.

The Washington, DC Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) has implemented facility planning for the Anacostia River Projects portion of a program to bring its Combined Sewer System (CSO) into compliance with federal water quality regulations by 2025. The program includes approximately 19 kilometers (12 miles) of deep CSO storage/conveyance and flood relief soft ground tunnels, construction, vortex drop, overflow, maintenance and air release shafts, as well as near surface diversion structures and conveyances. The Project encompasses major technical and non-technical challenges including completion under a federal consent decree schedule, construction within the confines of heavily developed urban areas, difficult ground conditions, major infrastructure crossings, and close coordination with several major public agencies. This paper discusses the planning stage considerations related to the geotechnical investigation program, discusses obstructions that influenced alignment selection, and provides two examples of preliminary estimates of settlement induced ground movement due to the tunnel and shaft construction.

Data analysis of pentane and hexane adsorption from natural gas in a fixed bed of silica gel shows that constant length mass transfer zones form, the curvature of the adsorption isotherm controls the growth of the mass transfer zone and surface diffusion of molecules inside the silica gel particle controls the mass transfer rate. Curvature of the hexane isothem is more than the curvature of the pentane isotherm. Because of this curvature the hexane adsorption zones reached a constant length. In contrast, the pentane adsorption zones were always increasing in length during each run. A procedure was developed to obtain correct mass transfer coefficients using effluent curve slopes. These transfer roefficients increase with the amount of hydrocarbon adsorbed on the silica gel particle. The characteristic shape of the hexane effluent curves also show that molecular diffusion inside the silica gel particle controls the adsorption rate of pentane and hexane. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to determine the mechanisms that control the dynamic adsorption of hydrocarbons from a natural gas onto silica gel. Before one can deal effectively with multicomponent adsorption, the transfer mechanisms by which a single hydrocarbon component is adsorbed from the gas stream must be defined. Two principal investigations of this system have been published ' and indicate that diffusion through the gas around the particle controls the adsorption rate. Some of the experimental observations in each study either do not support this transfer mechanism or are inconsistent with the mathematical model used in analysis. In this study surface diffusion of molecules inside the particle controls the mass transfer rate of pentane and hexane. This mechanism is indicated by the effluent curve shape for a constant length transfer zone and by the variation of the mass transfer coefficient with concentration of the adsorbed hydrocarbon. THEORY AND DEFINITIONS — MATHEMATICAL MODELS Mathematical solutions for the isothermal adsorption of a trace component from a carrier gas are derived from three relationships: the mass balance or continuity equation, the equilibrium relationship between the gas and solid phases, and a mass transfer rate equation. The transfer rate is proportional to the adsorbate concentration gradient within either the gas or solid phase. Mathematical solutions of these equations usually give the adsorbate concentration as a function of time and distance from the bed inlet. That part of the bed in which the adsorbate concentration changes from a maximum to a minimum value is called the transfer zone. This transfer zone is directly related to a plot of the effluent concentration vs time which has a characteristic S-shape. This general shape is determined by the continuity equation and occurs in many processes of diffusional transfer.

This report describes the design, development, manufacture and incorporation of noise control features on a jumbo drill and the results of successful tests of this drill in surface and underground mines. The noise-reducing features developed under this program are applicable to future designs of jumbo mounted drills that can be cost effectively manufactured and have the potential to reduce noise levels at the operator's position from 115-120 dBA to 95 dBA or less without a reduction of currently attainable drilling rates.

In a review of so 40 papers on damage to residential structures resulting from blasting, only 3 were found that present data on the observed amplitude and frequency of the vibration levels produced by blasting together with an observed degree of damage to a residential structure. The data from these three reports have been analyzed statistically to determine if one of the quantities, displacement, velocity, or acceleration, is more reliable than the others for estimating the degree of damage to a residential structure. From this analysis the conclusion is drawn that a given degree of damage to a structure is most closely related to the magnitude of the particle velocity of the wave motion passing thru the earth at the structure location. On the average, only minor damage it observed for peak particle velocities of 5.4 inches per second, and major damage is observed for peak particle velocities of 7.6 inches per second. When the spread of the data is taken into consideration, the following statement can be made: Wave motions that have a peak particle velocity in excess of 2 inches per second have a fair probability of producing some damage to structures, whereas wave motions that have a peak velocity less than 2 inches per second have a very low probability of causing any damage. Therefore, the recommendation is made that vibration levels in the vicinity of residential structures should be maintained below a peat particle velocity of 2 inches per second. The above criterion for safe blasting is considered to hold over a wide variety of soil and rock conditions because the original data were obtained for a wide range of soil and rock conditions and on various types of residential structures. Viscosities of slags constitute an important physical property needed for an understanding of the mass transfer phenomena in metallurgical processes. Viscosity is also the key that leads to a better understanding of the structure of slags. It is well known that the viscosities of silicate slags decrease with the addition of basic oxides due to the breaking of the silicate network. The measurements of slag viscosities often pose experimental challenges, especially to the choice of materials. The keynote lecture takes up the experimental problems and the various techniques adopted. Dynamic viscosity measurement, as a powerful tool towards an understanding of the kinetics of some high temperature reactions, is brought out. A number of semi-empirical models have been developed to estimate the slag viscosities in the case of multi component slags. A critical survey of these models is presented in the lecture. Earlier models by Riboud et al., Urbain et al. and Mills et al. have been developed further into a new generation of models. Some of the current important models are (1) Model by Iida et al. (2)CSIRO model (3) Pyro research Model (4) Model by Tanaka et al. (5) Model approach by Reddy et al. and (6) KTH-model. The predictions and capabilities of the various models are compared. Estimations of viscosities from thermodynamic data and prediction of liquidus temperatures from viscosities are presented. The concept of surface viscosities with reference to slags and viscosities of two-phase mixtures are also taken up in the presentation.

The formation of the gas emission zone in longwall mining and the potential amount of gas in this zone are factors of local geology and spatial variability within this geology. Therefore, geostatistical methods can be used for modeling and prediction of gas amounts and for assessing its uncertainty in the gas emission zone of longwall mines. This study used core data obtained from 64 exploration boreholes drilled from the surface to the bottom of the Pittsburgh coal seam in a mining district in the Northern Appalachian basin. After identifying important coal layers for the gas emission zone, semivariogram modeling was conducted for different coal seams to define the distribution and continuity of various attributes. Sequential simulations were performed for stochastic assessment of these attributes to calculate gas-in-place (GIP) in each coal seam. GIP calculations for coals of various gas emissions zones were combined and ranked for their cumulative distribution function to find GIP in the caved zone and in the fractured zone at the 5%, 50%, and 95% quantiles. Fifty percent quantile results were later used to isolate a panel from the whole area and create a mosaic representation corresponding to the daily advance rate of the longwall face. This approach helped to estimate the daily emissions of this panel from the caved zone and from the fractured zone. Results showed that gas-in-place in the Pittsburgh coal seam, in the caved zone, and in the fractured zone showed spatial correlations that could be modeled and estimated using geostatistical methods. This study showed that gas-in- place volumes in the study area may be as high as 12.3 Bscf and as much as 3.5 MMscf per acre of mining.
