The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has been studying actively for the past-several years the flow of natural bas through high--pressure pipe lines.4 This report deals with that part of the study involving the design of pipe-line, systems consisting of lines laid parallel to each other. The lines are deferred to as the original line and the parallel line. The paralleling line may or may not extend the entire length of the original line; however, the parallel line is, connected at its two ends to the original line. As a result of the large expansion of the natural-gas industry almost all markets within economic distance from the developed gas fields have at least one pipe line supplying them with natural gas. Small increases in the consumers' demand for natural gas can be met usually by increasing operating pressures, but any marked increase in demand necessitates paralleling sections of the existing systems. In order to address the difficulty of accurate segmentation of froth images of different sizes, a method of froth image segmentation based on highlight correction and parameter adaptation is proposed. First, a machine vision system on a single-cell flotation machine is built to collect froth images. Homomorphic filtering is used to improve the uneven brightness and shadow of the images. Fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering is then utilized to classify similar highlights that belong to the same froth. After Otsu threshold segmentation, a parameter-adaptive morphological operation is used to extract the marker points and edge bands and correct the froth edges in the original image. Finally, the modified image is filtered by morphological reconstruction, and the highlight mark is used as the local minimum point for watershed segmentation. Three sizes of froth images are segmented in comparative experiments. The results show that the proposed method is suitable for the segmentation of froth images of different sizes. The position of the extracted segmentation line is close to reality, with average over-segmentation and under-segmentation rates for froth images of 2.6% and 6.8%, respectively. The froth image segmentation performance is stronger than that of the other methods examined.

This report describes Bureau of Mines laboratory test results in electrokinetic dewatering and consolidation of metal-mine tailings. Tailings were placed in 0.3-cubic-foot Plexiglass models, and dc potential was applied until dewatering ceased. Time-oriented measurements of water removal, changes in resistivity, and power consumption were recorded during the dewatering process. Dewatered material was tested for moisture content and density. Equipment and procedures were developed to optimize the method for unclassified mill tailings from a particular mine in the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, district. Results indicate the method to be highly effective in dewatering and consolidating this material.

Caesium, rubidium, and lithium are sometimes described as the minor or rarer alkali metals. They generally occur together in nature, although, lithium is distributed more widely and is far more abundant than either of the other two. The chemical, and even the physical, properties of these three elements can best be considered In conjunction with the more familiar members of the alkali group, sodium and potassium. The five elements lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, and caesium show an interesting gradation properties from member to member with the increase in atomic weights. All are silvery white and soft enough to be cut with a knife. They tarnish rapidly in air and decompose water at ordinary temperatures. The lowest temperature at which the action of the several metals on water can be de¬tected is -98°C. for sodium, -105°C, for potassium, 108°C. for rubidium, and -116°C. for caesium. A fundamental study of fragment size distribution and characteristics of fracture pattern is presented for the dynamic penetration of a conical bit into coal block. In this paper, damaged zones during crater formation and fragment size distribution were studied. Bit with a sharper tip angle and a smooth body configuration performed better penetration. Results suggest that in coal cutting the trend should be toward the face cleat direction using a sharper angled tip bits which consumes less energy for an optimum range of penetration depths, thus attaining maximum cutting efficiency and reducing fine fragments.

As low-temperature heat-capacity and entropy data were available for only one sesquisulfide (cerium sesquisulfide), it appeared desirable to augment the information for this class of compounds by measuring the sulfides of antimony and indium. In addition a pressing need existed for data on indium sulfide to supplement vaporization studies in progress in the Department of Mineral Technology, University of California. This Bureau of Mines paper reports low-temperature heat-capacity measurements and entropy evaluations at 298.15° R. of antimony sesquisulfide of stoiehiometric composition (Sb2S3) and of indium sesquisulfide which was somewhat deficient in sulfur (In2S2.93). The data for the latter substance were adjusted to correspond to the stoichiome tric composition (In2S3 ) . Indium sesquisulfide has a lower entropy at 298.15' K, than either antimony sesquisulfide or cerium sesquisulfide, in line with the higher atomic density of the indium compound.

This paper purposes to outline briefly results of seismic measurements made in the vicinity of blasts in a mine and in open-quarry operations. It endeavors to examine the amplitude and frequency of such vibrations as influenced by the loading, geology, and distance from the source and includes comments on factors that may index the destructiveness of a vibration and a method for measuring the stresses produced. There seems to be no simple mathematical analysis of the transmission of seismic energy through the ground, and experimental observations are at present most feasible. SEISMOLOGIC INSTRUMENTS Instruments developed by the Bureau of Mines for recording ground vibrations from quarry blasting comprise a new type of seismometer, oscillators, and a recording oscillograph. The seismometers respond to vibrations reaching them through the earth and transmit their characteristics by electric current to the oscillograph, where they are recorded by a beam of light on a moving strip of sensitized photographic paper. The seismometers are so constructed that their sensitivity to earth vibration can be controlled, thus keeping the amplitude of the recorded wave within bounds on the paper. Each instrument has been calibrated against vibrations of known intensity and frequency so that correction factors are known for the idiosyncracies of each unit. Moreover, each seismometer is calibrated in the field for its particular sensitivity setting at each blast. By these controls the actual movement of the earth due to vibrations of one ten-thousandth of an inch can be accurately measured.

Uncertain, because the zone of caving may or may not be known, risky because the loss of a shaft is disastrous, and costly because the Contractor, who faces these risks, must include large sums of money in his bid for shaft wall stabilization techniques. This case study will discuss the stabilization techniques that are typically used within the United States, and then present new technologies, born in Europe, that are being utilized in the States by Malcolm Drilling Company today.

Oil shale, a potential source of products presently obtained from petroleum, is found in many countries. The most extensive known deposits from the standpoint of potential shale oil in place are those in Brazil and the United States of America. Mining methods used for oil shale range from open-pit operations for shallow deposits to room-and-pillar and longwall techniques for deposits with thick overburdens. Oil shales from different sources vary greatly in the amounts and types of organic and inorganic constituents. By retorting, the organic material is converted to oil, gas, and coke. The largest percentages of oil are obtained from materials having the highest hydrogen content. Over 2,000 retorting systems have been patented, but only a few have been used industrially, and no single process seems best for all types of shales or economic conditions. Shale oils have different characteristics, depending on the source rock and method of retorting. They contain large quantities of olefinic hydrocarbons and more oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur derivatives of hydrocarbons than most petroleums. Consequently, petroleum refining methods usually must be modified for shale oil. This is particularly true in catalytic processing. Hydrogenation, even under mild conditions, improves shale-oil refinability. Several byproducts may be obtained from both the retorting and refining steps.

Paper presented at a meeting on: Artificial intelligence in the minerals sector, held in Nottingham, UK, 20 April 1993 (original title: Knowledge-based condition monitoring of cone crushers). A large proportion of the electricity used by the quarrying industry is consumed in the comminution and sizing process. In most cases aggregate processing plants operate with minimum control features resulting in limited operational efficiency. Improved control is required to increase operational efficiency with concomitant savings associated with reduction in re-circulating load and improved resource utilisation. Development work has suggested that a combination of adaptive control and process condition monitoring could improve control of comminution plants. Many commercial process control and condition monitoring systems are available, but none were deemed suitable due to the domain specific characteristics of the application. An assessment of the particular characteristics of cone crushing concluded that the application was best suited to the use of small domain specific process control combined with bespoke condition monitoring. The processing power of the control system for the project is a function not of the academic requirement, but rather the economic and practical constraints imposed by the application. As a result of the constraints a high-end PC system has been designed in preference to a workstation. Within the research project work packages are sub-divided into novel wear sensor development, knowledge based control/condition monitoring and the investigation and mathematical modelling of the wear mechanisms inherent in cone crushing. Numerous strategies were considered to implement the control system outlined. The flotation response of a Pb-Zn sulphide ore from the Rosh Pinah Mine (Namibia) was studied in the presence of inorganic depressants such as sodium cyanide and zinc sulphate. Poor flotation selective was observed in the rougher concentrate of the galena circuit despite the use of excessive amount of sodium cyanide. Batch flotation tests have shown that the use of cyanide alone is not efficient for the depression of sphalerite from the Rosh Pinah ore when milling is carried out according to the current plant particle size distribution. The use of both cyanide and zinc sulphate improved the selectivity between galena and sphalerite much better than cyanide alone. Flotation selectivity is limited by the mineralogical texture of the Rosh Pinah ore sample. Microscopic analysis has shown that the presence of sphalerite in the galena concentrate is also due to poor liberation between galena and sphalerite, especially in the middlings. Hence selectivity could be improved by regrinding the rougher concentrate prior to the cleaning stage. Keywords- Sulphide ores, Flotation, Flotation depressant, Mineralogy.

In washability, the objective is to establish the set of maximum possible separation performance criteria for a given mineral feed. The method of choice for this has been the conventional sink–?float analysis. Using traditional sink–float method it is not possible to sample and automatically measure. This fact, as well as time, cost and safety aspects, as well as required and manageable sample size of the sink–float method have prompted the search for a new approach for establishing separation performance criteria. This is especially important as performance levels of separator plants can be maximised if reliable information based on an analysis of washability in conjunction with particle size distribution, elemental constituency becomes available in time. The new method to establish washability and associated performance information utilises at least two measurement technologies concurrently: single energy X-ray transmission and image processing. For porous or very inhomogeneous materials the results can be refined further by using dual energy X-ray transmission and image processing.If used as a standard laboratory device the continuous build-up of the washability curve allows to evaluate the statistical significance of the sample size during measurement.The measuring method can even be improved if it is combined with an automatic sampling system that feeds a continuous and representative particle stream to the analyser. Then the value of the collected data increases considerably since the washability data are additionally available in time to be considered in the control of the process plant. The washability curve can be derived and is continuously updated based on the particles measured during the past time interval. Older curves and results are stored in a database and can be retrieved for later reference. This technology now enables automated sampling and integrated automated measurement, which was previously not possible.This incorporation of an automated washability monitor at a representative sample gives near real-time data that would impinge positively on the profitability of the plant operation. A previous report of the Bureau of Mines dealt with the toxicity of dichlorodifluoromethane5, a new refrigerant that has a remarkably low toxicity. Continued research by the Prigidaire Corporation6 and toxicological experiments performed in the Laboratory of Applied Physiology of the University of Cincinnati7 revealed another organic fluoride, dichlorotetrafluoroethane, whose toxicity also appeared to be of a very low order and whose physical-and chemical properties make it suitable for refrigeration purposes. In addition to low toxicity, safety in its use is further enhanced by its physical properties, which permit the design of equipment that operates at comparatively low pressures and hence mitigates the dangers and problems of leakage. The investigation described in this report was performed by the Bureau of Mines at the request and with the cooperation of the Frigidaire Corporation.

"New or improved mathematical models of mineral processing machines are published almost on a monthly basis. Often, these models can be calibrated from bench-scale test results and programmed using spreadsheet software to simulate different designs and operating conditions in open-circuit configuration. However, since mineral processing plants frequently operate comminution, separation and/or extraction machines in closed-circuit configurations, open-circuit simulations often have limited applicability.The simulation of closed-circuit configurations necessitates the programming of an iterative loop to bring the circuit to equilibrium. This can be done by using spreadsheet software but often requires advanced programming skills. As an alternative, LIMN® software, which simplifies the programming of closed-circuit configurations within spreadsheets can be used. This software was specifically designed to turn a Microsoft EXCEL® spreadsheet into a closed-circuit modeling and simulation platform with minimal programming.During the past few years, the Mineral Processing Group at the Noranda Technology Centre, has used this software for numerous projects which include the simulation of multi-stage cyclone circuits, closed-circuit regrinding and locked-cycle flotation tests. Using these projects as examples, the flexibility and the easy to use nature of the LIMN® software is demonstrated.INTRODUCTIONMineral processing engineers routinely have to make predictions regarding comminution and separation processes. Predicting the appropriate dimensions of equipment and the process response to changes in operating mode are probably the most common situations that they face. In all cases these predictions are expected to be rapid and accurate.Predictions made by engineers are frequently based on mathematical models. Many first principles, empirical, semi-empirical, steady state and dynamic models of mineral processes can be found in the literature. In fact, new or improved mineral processing models are continuously being proposed and in spite of this variety, process engineers often have to either develop their own or tailor existing models to suit their particular needs."

Several shear failures were observed in Shaft #1 at the Mountain Coal Company, LLC, West Elk Mine, after mining longwall Panel 23, 1,100 ft to the east of Shaft #1. It was speculated that this shear damage could be related to differential ground movement caused by in situ stress relief from the ?stress shadow? of the caved zone above longwall Panel 23. A numerical study was conducted to assess the possibility of the shaft shear damage being caused by in situ stress relief and the potential for additional damage to Shaft #1 and two other nearby shafts, due to mining nearby longwall Panel 24. Three-dimensional (3D) models were built in FLAC3D to simulate past and future mining near shafts, the estimated local anisotropic and directional horizontal stresses, and the overlying variable surface topography. The numerical analyses indicated that stress relief due to mining Panel 23 caused the shear damage to Shaft #1and that additional damage to Shaft #1 and the other two shafts, would likely result from mining longwall Panel 24. Additional shear damage was documented in Shaft #1 when longwall Panel 24 was mined, confirming the results of the numerical analyses.

The purpose of this research contract was to develop and test a Saran latex modified portland cement concrete lagging to be used as a replacement for wood lagging. The scope of work performed was divided into four phases: Phase I - Engineering Criteria; Phase-! I1 - Design Study; Phase III - Fabrication of Lagging; and Phase IV - Prototype Demonstration Project. Each phase of work was completed and is described in detail in this report. The prototype latex modified concrete lagging developed in this program weighed 52 pounds. When tested in flexure, it supported center point loading of 4500 pounds and under 1/4 point loading it supported loadings of 7000 pounds. Deflections at maximum loading ranged from 1/2 to 1 inch. Maximum deflections exceed 2 inches. The lagging does not exhibit catastrophic failure. Two hundred and twenty of the LMC lagging were produced and shipped to the Bunker Hill Company in Kellogg, Idaho for installation in their mine at the 17 level. The lagging are performing satisfactory after 22 months exposure in the mine.

One of the manifestations of the dynamically induced failures in deep coal mines is the violent ejection of coal from the ribs. A possible protection against such failures is the use of a specifically designed dynamic support system with reinforcement units having the sufficient capacity to absorb the kinetic energy of the dynamic failure and a skin support that can adequately contain the disintegrated coal. With this method of mitigation in mind, a recently introduced yielding rock bolt, trade name Roofex, has been identified (Harvey and Ozbay, 2009) as a possible energy absorbing component of a dynamic support system. According to the manufacturer?s specification, the Roofex bolts can yield 300 mm (or more) displacement while holding 80 kN pull load. In order to assess the performance of this support unit in coal ribs, a series of in situ pull tests performed in two coal mines in Colorado. The results show that, under conventional pull test loading conditions, Roofex yielding bolts perform very close to their claimed specifications, thus showing a potential for their use as the main energy absorbing component of a dynamic support system. Further studies are required to confirm the in situ performance of these bolts under dynamic loading conditions and also to develop a containment component for a dynamic support system for the mitigation of dynamic coal rib failures.

Virtually from the date of its discovery in December 1928 the Oklahoma City oil and gas field, Oklahoma County, Okla., has attracted national and international attention. The history of the field has been associated closely with rules and regulations pertaining to production control and proration practices. Early development was rapid, and Oklahoma City soon attained the distinction of being the first major field in which the producing wells were over a mile in depth. Before the structural features of the reservoir had been disclosed every outpost well was considered a "wildcat", so complex appeared the underground geology. The wells not only were deep and the reservoir pressures high, but the production from the early wells was a high A.P.I. gravity oil, accompanied by large volumes of gas. Several "blow-outs" and fired occurred during the early development, and the close proximity of these now unusual events to a large city gave the field much publicity, both local and national. Later, when its production threatened to demoralize the market for oil and its products, the Oklahoma. City field again attracted wide publicity. The then little understood geology of the underground reservoir and the diversity of ownership of the land overlying the producing structure made orderly development and production difficult to enforce. Proration was enforced with difficulty, and the rate of production from the field continued to increase until, on August 4, 1931, martial law was declared in all prorated fields of the State, and most of the wells in the Oklahoma City field wore shut in. On October 9, 1931, permission was granted to reopen and produce the wells in the Oklahoma City field. The order permitting production of the wells provided that during the period beginning October 10 and extending to October 20, 1931, all wells in the field that had not produced more oil than specified under the earlier proration orders and that had been shut in for the required 65-day period were permitted to produce 5 percent of their last potential during that 10-day period.

"This paper describes the recent pilot-plant work carried out on two alternative processes capable of producing an effluent containing less than 10 pCi/L total radium-226 activity and very close to 3 pCi/L dissolved radium-226. The processes incorporate coprecipitation of radium with barium sulphate by the addition of barium chloride in continuously stirred tank reactors followed by either chemical coagulation with ferric chloride, flocculation and clarification, or polymer-aided dual-media filtration. IntroductionUranium mines in Canada have practiced radium removal from tailings basin effluents since 1965. Treatment consists of addition of barium chloride to precipitate radium as barium- radium sulphate and provision of natural or constructed settling ponds for sedimentation. This process, however, has been identified as being deficient in that it allows particulate or suspended radium-226 releases which are higher than the regulated dissolved values». Also, the large size of some of the settling ponds is believed to represent a real limitation of the present technology because of inferred difficulty in recovery of barium-radium sulphate precipitates.The Federal Government Mining Task Force established a Radioactivity Sub-Group in 1974 to assist in the development of effluent regulations and guidelines for the uranium mining industry. Among the recommendations of the Sub-Group was the need to seek more effective methods of radium removal, including development of physical/chemical treatment systems as an alternative to settling ponds. In response to the SubGroup recommendations, a bench-scale study began in March 1976at the Wastewater Technology Centre (WTC) of Environment Canada . The results of this study indicated that coagulation and flocculation of the precipitate from barium chloride addition is a viable alternative to sedimentation in settling ponds(3). The bench work was expanded and accelerated in 1977, with financial assistance provided by the Atomic Energy Control Board. Subsequently, a research program with a larger scope was developed; this program is jointly managed and funded by government and industry, as shown in Table I.One of the goals of the joint program is to develop, at pilot scale, a physicalI chemical process to reduce the radium-226 content of uranium mining and milling effluents. Target radium-226 activities for treated tailings basin effluents were set: namely, 10 pCil L total and 3 pCil L dissolved radium 226. Extensive bench-scale and pilot-scale work was conducted through 1978 and 1979 and has culminated in the development of two physical/chemical processes. This paper describes work carried out at a pilot plant which led to the selection of the two physical I chemical processes for demonstration. In short-term tests, the processes produced effluents meeting the radium-226 target activities."
