Driefontein Consolidated Limited has a proud history in the South African gold mining industry dating back to March 1945 with the formation of the West Driefontein Gold Mining Company. The reclamation gold plant at West Driefontein was originally built as a uranium recovery plant in 1970. With the collapse of the uranium oxide yellow cake market, the uranium plant was closed in 1988and successfully converted into a gold plant, recovering gold from repulped tailings dams1. The West Driefontein Reclaim plant utilized milling, leaching, conventional rotary vacuum filtration and cementation to recover the gold at a rate of 200,000 dry tons per month. The No. 1 tailings dam (at a head grade of 0.8 Au g/t) began to near the end of its life during 1996, and the next slimes dams to be treated, the No. 2tailings dam (at a lower head grade of 0.56 Au g/t) was found too marginal for reprocessing using the filtration technology. Alternate technologies were investigated, particularly the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant based on the Anglo-American Corporation (AAC) pump-cell technology at the Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company?s East gold plant which was operating profitably at lower head grades2. The AAC pump-cell technology is based on the carousel mode of operation2. The suitability of CIP technology for the West Driefontein Reclaim plant was investigated using a pilot plant pump-cell supplied by Kemix The data gathered were utilized in sizing a full scale AAC pump-cell plant. This plant was motivated, built and commissioned on the 22nd of November 1996. Incorporating 6 eighty cubic metre AAC pump-cells. The West Driefontein Reclaim plant initially treated repulped slimes dam material. A subsequent change of feed material to current arisings (from the main gold plant) occurred in1997 in order to convert mills for waste rock treatment. Currently the reclaim plant treats a combination of current arisings and waste rock (milled at the reclaim site). The new CIP plant replaced twenty-seven rotary vacuum filters. A comparison between the filters and CIP in terms of operating costs was undertaken, as well as a performance analysis of the CIP plant to determine its flexibility in terms of variation of the throughput, pulp density, gold input, leaching efficiency prior to CIP, and the rate of carbon movement.

West Virginia's basic coal mining regulatory programs are not unique when compared to Federally approved programs implemented by other coal producing states. In fact, the language in The West Virginia Energy Act governing subsidence mirrors that written in the Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act as well as other states' statutes. Certain legal and administrative issues, how¬ever, combine to make West Virginia's regulation of surface subsidence a singular approach.

The discovery of this asphaltum was made by S. H. Gilson, of Salt Lake, and since then the material has borne the local name of Gilsonite. So far as I have been able to ascertain, however, the first published notice of this discovery was made by Prof. W. P. Blake in the Engineering arid Mining Journal, of December 26, 1885, where he names the new mineral Uintahite, from the place of its discovery, the Uintah Mountains in eastern Utah. The priority of publication and the geographical fitness of the name will probably secure its acceptance by mineralogists.* The following is Prof. Blake's article. In the month of September last, a sample of peculiar asphalt was received for examination, and recently when in Provo, Utah, I had the opportunity of seeing a considerable quantity brought in from the Uintah Mountains. It is obtained in masses several inches in diameter, and apparently free from mechanically disseminated impurities. It breaks with a conchoidal fracture, is very brittle, and is readily reduced to powder in a mortar. Hardness, 2 to 25. Gravity, 1.065 to 1.070. Color, black, brilliant, and lustrous; streak and powder, a rich brown. It is a non-conductor of electricity, and is electrically excited by friction.

Cost evaluation models constructed specifically to evaluate the economic potential of an individually motorized railcar system of ore and waste transport demonstrate that the approach may be considerably more cost effective than traditional rubber-tired haulage methods. The system design places a motorized drive unit on each railcar, as opposed to the more common configuration in which a series of un-motorized cars trail behind a single locomotive. These motorized railcars are directed to various load and dump points by a computerized dispatch system, and as such have the advantage of operating unmanned. In addition, the tractive effort of the rail-type drive system is noticeably more efficient than that of the rubber-tired mode of transport. The savings are realized primarily through comparative reductions in the requirements for labor and, to a lesser degree, energy.

Shoshonite suite (absarokite-shoshonite-banakite) and adakite-hosted epithermal Au deposits are a feature of circum-Pacific magmatism. Fijian examples include Tavua (Emperor) and Tuvatu on Viti Levu. New discoveries of shoshonite suite and adakite-hosted epithermal Au mineralisation have been made in the southern Yasawa Islands and in central-northern and central-western Viti Levu. The Fijian shoshonites define four NE–SW trending suites. The oldest is the northern 7.9–5.0 Ma Yasawa suite, followed by the 4.7–3.5 Ma Sabeto–Tavua–Rakiraki suite in northern Viti Levu, the 4.7–4.2 Ma Yanuca–Vatulele suite approximately 20 km south of Viti Levu and the 3.4 Ma Astrolabe suite approximately 75 km further south. Shoshonite suite lithologies with 3.8–3.0 Ma ages also occur in the Lomaiviti islands between Vatu-Cake and Moala, to the east of Viti Levu, defining a trend oblique to the NE–SW shoshonite belts. Seatura, a 3.3–2.8 Ma ocean island basalt (OIB) volcano, sits at the northern end of the Lomaiviti trend shoshonites. Trace element/isotopic chemistries indicate that shoshonite arc magma genesis involved the melting of a hydrated supra-subduction zone mantle wedge and also a lower mantle-derived plume (OIB) component. The upwelling plume provided heat for melting and possibly Au enrichment. Accessing the melt generation zone associated with the plume required a slab conduit or window. Such slab windows form by tearing during subduction or occur at slab edges. Adakites form by plume-induced slab melting. The four NE–SW Fijian shoshonite suites are interpreted to occur in back-arc extensional zones above a slab window (tear) that migrated southward during rollback of the New Hebrides–Vanuatu subduction zone. The plume (Seatura OIB) that is interpreted to have caused mantle wedge melting and formation of the Lomaviti trend shoshonites was focused along the interface between the north-dipping Vanuatu–New Hebrides subduction zone and the west-dipping Tonga subduction zone, which we have seismically imaged at approximately 400 km depth. Deep tunnels have been used for decades for the temporary storage of large volumes of urban runoff, both storm water and combined sewer overflow (CSO). Tunnels are attractive because they reduce surface disruption and do double duty as storage and conveyance systems, collecting overflows from multiple locations and transporting them for treatment to various facilities. Like any hydraulic system, however, there are dynamic effects that must be fully understood during the design phase so that the final constructed product does not have unintended negative consequences. Preliminary sizing of storage tunnels is typically based on the total volume required. For example, if studies have determined that a volume of 56.8 ML (15 million gal) will provide the intended level of control, then that figure can be used, along with a preliminary idea of the desired tunnel length, to compute the required diameter. Of course, filling a long tube with water from various points along the way is not at all the same as pouring water into a bucket, and these dynamic effects require additional attention from design engineers. The rapid filling of storage tunnels can lead to the formation of bores, which are essentially moving walls of water. An open channel bore can build in height until it reaches the crown of the tunnel, at which point it becomes a pipe-filling bore. Figure 1 depicts both kinds of bores moving upwards in a rapidly filling tunnel. Bores can strike the ends of tun-nels with tremendous force, driving water and entrained air upwards into dropshafts and creating strong pressure surges in portions of the tunnel that are already filled. If the hydraulic surges are high enough to reach grade, they can cause overflows and/or damage structures at the surface. Trapped air pockets can occur through several phenomena, including the reflection of bores off dropshaft structures and the occurrence of ?premature pressurization.? The latter refers to the situation where the inflow to a tunnel is increasing more rapidly than the tunnel can convey it, such that the pipe becomes surcharged at an upstream point while points downstream are still flowing as an open channel. These air pockets are a great nuisance as they migrate toward points in the tunnel where they can rise to the surface, which are often shafts that are already filled with water (Fig. 2). The ?geyersing? that results can be hazardous and costly.

Following the introduction of roof shields to the U.S. longwall mining scene in 1975, the number of shield faces (faces supported by shields) has increased steadily, and the occurrence of accidents associated with ground control inadequacies at longwall operations has shown a downward trend. However, ground control problems in longwall mining still exist. New mining systems, however efficient, have run afoul of roof control. Shield faces have suffered extended stoppages because of roof cavities. In this report, the Bureau of Mines addresses the problem of longwall roof control. The report presents a review of foreign remedial and strata replacement techniques for longwall faces and evaluates their potential for domestic application. The technology reviewed includes meshing, chemical rock stabilization, cribbing, strain-absorbent modules, inflatables, synthetic foam, and monolithic fills.

The performance of ten anemometers of several types has been measured at low air speeds. Multiple calibration runs provided sufficient data for measuring random error about the mean calibration curve in addition to the difference between indicated and true speeds. Measurements were also performed of the minimum operating speeds of the anemometers.

The Central Subway will extend the recently completed 8.2-km long Third Street Light Rail line another 2.7 km north through the Union Square shopping district to Chinatown with a concourse-to-concourse connection to the Powell Street BART Station. One mined and two cut-and-cover subway stations are planned. Particular challenges include: tunneling under existing tunnels; variable ground conditions ranging from saturated alluvium to fractured bedrock; a congested urban setting and large-span caverns. This paper gives an overview of the project as it stands midway through the preliminary engineering stage along with a discussion of the rationale and design approaches that are being used to address the construction challenges of restoring light rail service in the most densely developed areas of San Francisco.

The paper describes some problems encountered with the foundation of a deep drainage caisson constructed on the Nile Bank in Cairo. The use of suction dredging while sinking the caisson led to a piping failure of the sandy soil in the base which was loosened during the process of pumping. A study was carried out to investigate the problem and a procedure was adopted to retain the stability of the caisson.

This report details a microcomputer-based control and monitoring network that was developed in-house by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and installed on a continuous mining machine. The network consists of microcomputers that are connected together via a single twisted-pair cable. Each microcomputer was developed to provide a particular function in the control process. Machine-mounted microcomputers, in conjunction with the appropriate sensors, provide closed-loop control of the machine, navigation, and environmental monitoring. Off-the-machine microcomputers provide remote control of the machine, sensor status, and a connection to the network so that external computers can access network data and control the continuous mining machine. Because of the network's generic structure, it can be installed on most mining machines.

The world mineral industry has over the years experienced growth in the production of nickel (Ni) due to its use not only in the catalytic industry but mainly also to its demand in the stainless steel production industry. Hence there is a need to produce more pure and marketable grades of Ni through the use of efficient purification routes such as solvent extraction. The V10-LIX®84-IC system resulted in nickel (Ni) extraction isotherm shifting to lower pH levels. The pH window of opportunity for the extraction of Ni subsequently increased in solution containing magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) even though the system also resulted in slight shifts to less positive pH values for Mg and Ca curves. Results showed a synergistic effect of LIX®84-IC when added to V10 for all elements, Ni, Mg and Ca. The pH50 values for elements Ni, Mg and Ca in the V10-LIX®84-IC system were 2.95, 8.10 and 7.70 respectively. Comparing results obtained when using V10 alone produced ?pH50 for Ni, Mg and Ca being 3.35, 0.15 and 0.70 respectively, which was a confirmation of the synergistic shifts for all the elements. The ?pH50 (Mg-Ni)value was 1.95 with no synergism and 5.15 with synergism and that for ?pH50 (Ca-Ni)was 2.10 with no synergism and 4.75 with synergism. This showed that the Ni-Mg separation factor was relatively larger than the Ni-Ca. Improved loading and stripping kinetics were also observed. On July 1, 1969, the Explosives Research Center merged with the Health and Safety Research and Testing Center to form the Safety Research Center, with facilities at Pittsburgh and Bruceton, Pa. Subsequently, passage in December of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (Public Law 91-173) had a major influence on the activities of the new center. These activities were conducted under two main programs, Coal Mine Safety Research and Explosives Research. The Coal Mine Safety Research program was concerned primarily with two categories of hazards: health-related hazards associated with the mine environment, due to such factors as respirable dust, toxic gases and vapors, and excessive noise; and accidents due to mine fires, explosions, and roof falls.

"SynopsisGoing beyond transformation claims contained in employment equity scorecards and industry compliance reports, this article provides qualitative insight into the initiatives employed and challenges experienced by mining companies in a quest to transform the mining industry. Perceptions expressed during in-depth interviews with 10 senior executives showed that the assumption that mining companies are reluctant to transform is erroneous. Results from this study suggest buy-in and commitment to transformation. This article describes specific initiatives undertaken by mining companies to transform. The most notable initiatives include staff recruitment efforts to appoint historically disadvantaged South Africans (HDSAs), staff development initiatives, as well as community development. The findings furthermore contextualize the challenges experienced by industry participants in their quest to transform. Despite accusations that industry participants are not taking responsibility for the implementation of the transformation agenda, government needs to recognize that they too have a role to play and need to appreciate and assist in the current challenges experienced by the industry.IntroductionWe need a mining sector that works. Mining employs over half a million people. It is the biggest earner of foreign exchange in our country. It also contributes about 20 billion rand directly to tax revenue. Mining also makes a far larger contribution as a buyer of goods and services, and a supplier of inputs to other sectors of our economy and other economies around the globe’ said President Jacob Zuma during the 2014 State of the Nation Address (Zuma, 2014). However, despite apparent commitment from government, enforced compliance with social and labour plans, regulations and Mining Charter targets, the South African mining industry is slow to gain local and international investor trust (Deloitte & Touche, 2013; Mashego, 2013).Industry players acknowledge that their context has changed – creating various challenges (Davis, 2014). In the past few years, such challenges included subdued commodity prices, increased working costs, constrained infrastructure, and high labour costs, coupled with poor levels of productivity, strained labour-management relations, an uncertain regulatory environment, and the inevitable maturation of the industry (Deloitte & Touche, 2013; Davenport, 2014). Mining affected communities also became more cognisant of their rights, and politicians more vocal in their expectations from their relationships with the mining giants (Davis, 2014). One of the main issues that contributed to the difficult operating conditions was claims from organized labour and Minister Shabangu that this industry is too slow to transform. Specific claims were made in terms of employment equity, fair salaries and wages for mineworkers, housing and living conditions, health and safety issues, and general working conditions (Limpitlaw et al., 2005; Miningmx, 2013; Shabangu, 2010). These claims were followed by what Gill Marcus, Reserve Bank Governor, explained as ‘unprotected strike action [that] has escalated into an uncontrolled, violent and unlawful landscape, led by a mob mentality in the absence of formal and recognised leaders’ (Mavuso,2013)."

William F. Hosford, Jr. (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)—Dr. Hauser has used a very interesting method to study the interaction of dislocations on different slip systems, but it should be pointed out that the analysis of the experiments is subject to a serious criticism. He states that "the effect of the compression can be adequately described by one slip system." The effect of frictional constraint during the compression makes this quite unlikely. When a block of metal is compressed its lateral expansion requires a sliding of the metal over the compression platens. The role of friction in the interface between the deforming metal and the platens is to increase the normal force required for the compression. Analyses1213 have shown that, in general, the additional force, p, required for the compression is a function of l/h where is the coefficient of friction, I is the length of the speci- men in contact with the platens. For a constant COefficient of friction, isho' shows that P should increase exponentially with pl/h for both plane strain and axially symmetric compression. For a compression specimen, Fig. 7, whose cross section perpendicular to the compression axis is a rectangle whith one dimension L, much larger than the other W, a much larger force would be required for appreciable flow parallel to L than for flow parallel to U7. Therefore lateral strain in the W direction, EW, should be much greater than the lateral strain in the L direction EL. Since L/H = 14.5 for Dr. Hauser's crystals, and since no lubrication was used, it seems questionable that appreciable lengthening of the crystals could occur. Because the theories of frictional constraint have been derived for isotropic polycrystalline materials, it was decided to make experimental measurements on a single crystal. A section 3.590 in. long was sawed from an aluminum single crystal with a square section of 0.249 in., so that L/W= 14.4. This crystal was tested in compression between dry ground steel platens. Fig. 8 shows the orientation of the crystal and the axis of compression. The face for compression was chosen so that the operation of the single-slip system which would be predicted in the absence of friction would lead to a larger strain in the length direction than in the width direction. The dimensional changes of the width and length as well as the height were measured frequently during the compression with micrometers. Width strains were calculated from the average of readings near each end and at the center. A plot of the length strain, EL, against the width strain E w is given in Fig. 9. The slope indicates that the EL amounted to only 2.5 pct of cw. Other compression tests on similar crystals with shorter lengths also showed severely limited elongation. Even for a crystal with L/W = A.0, EL was only about 26 pct of cw. Because of the frequent interruptions of the tests for dimensional measurements should have decreased the frictional constraint by allowing a reseating of the platens, even smaller elongations under continuous testing seem probable. These tests on long narrow crystals show that essentially plane strain conditions prevailed. We may assume that Dr. Hauser's crystals deformed similarly. That the compression can be described by the

Stoppings are required to resist lateral forces on the face of the structure to control pressure differentials created by ventilating air. The design criteria in other parts of the world, including Australia, exceed this requirement by specifying over pressurization control to as much as 14 kPa (2 psi) in the active sections and 35 kPa (5 psi) in the main ventilating control areas. This is done to provide protection to the mine workers from explosive or air blast events within the mine that can create this over pressurization. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research to develop a new testing protocol for rating mine ventilation stoppings. The premise of this work is that arch-loading conditions more accurately reflects the transverse load capabilities of stoppings in underground coal mines than the freestanding flexural strength test specified in the current Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). This work clearly shows that the transverse load capabilities of dry-stacked, mine ventilation stoppings are dependent upon the material strength of the block and the height and thickness of the wall, none of which are part of the current CFR criteria based on ASTM E-72 specifications. This paper compares the transverse load capabilities of several block materials and wall dimensions commonly used in stopping constructions based upon simulated three-hinge, rigid-arch loading tests of half-wall constructions in the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator. The results indicate a wide-range of transverse load capacities, ranging from as low as 21 kPa (0.3 psi) to as much as 117 kPa (17 psi) for the conditions evaluated in this study. The current CFR criteria do not distinguish between applications of these stopping designs despite their wide variance in transverse load capabilities, which is not conducive to employing ventilation control strategies that isolate certain sections of the mine to prevent injury to mine workers.

Historically, coal miners have known that roof shales can deteriorate in contact with humid mine air, causing massive roof falls and injuries from falling rock. It is critical to recognize rocks prone to weathering and to adequately support these rocks in order to ensure the long-term stability of the openings. In a recent study, NIOSH has used a wet/dry cycling test to determine the moisture sensitivity of over 800 specimens of roof rock from 25 U.S. coal mines. Fireclays and some gray shales are the most moisture-sensitive. Rocks with disturbed bedding, in contrast to flat-bedded rocks, are also more sensitive to water. Black shales are relatively un-reactive to moisture and serve to protect more reactive gray shales above. Mines that have roof rocks with moisture-sensitivity indexes above 40% can experience slaking roof conditions, and many require high coverage surface controls. Three case studies are presented in which the moisture-sensitivity index is correlated to roof conditions underground, and can be used to indicate long term deterioration. Engineering measures are described to control moisture-sensitive roof. In one case, roof screen not only reduces injuries from rock fall but also is shown to reduce roof falls. The International Seabed Authority and a number of countries have or are in the process of developing environmental impact assessment guidelines and legislation for seafloor mineral development. The formal decision to grant a project an environmental permit is based on an environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA), culminating in an environmental impact statement (EIS). The EIS needs to be supported by sufficient data upon which an assessment of impacts can be made and mitigation measures developed. Given the remote locations of many seafloor prospects, collection of sufficient environmental data to inform an EIS is often a difficult, expensive and lengthy process.
