"Over the past two decades, declining ore body grades, increased operating costs and increased construction costs have provided an incentive for the development of progressively larger flotation machines. As a consequence, the 60 to 100 cubic foot flotation machine of the l950's and l960's is being rapidly replaced by large volume machines, with a resulting improvement in the flotation machine specific capacity (TPH processed per square foot floor space), specific power (HP per TPH processed) and process control simplicity. The recent development, and satisfactory plant evaluation, of the WEMCO 1000 cubic foot flotation machine provides the means by which further economic and operating advantages may be incorporated in high tonnage mill applications.The systematic development of the large 1000 cubic foot flotation machine, and its subsequent performance evaluation in beneficiating metalliferous ores (copper, zinc and iron) will be reviewed in this paper and recently completed plant results will also be provided."

This paper presents a correlation of acoustic emission (A.E.) with physical and mechanical properties of different types of rock and coal specimens which were tested under aegis of a consultancy project from a Columbian Mining Company. In this study, three types of rocks which are sandstone (Arneisca), siltstone (Arciolita) and claystone (Limolita) and two different types of coal were tested. The tests were carried out under constant loading rates according to ASTM Standards for determining Young?s Modulus and Poisson?s Ratio. In both cases a MTS electro-hydraulic loading system was used. Mode of failure in each material was characterized by the acoustic emission and the results were substantiated by the deformation characteristics of the materials during failure.

The Ladolam deposit lies within the altered volcanic rocks of the caldera floor, part of which now forms Luise Harbour. It was discovered in 1982 in the course of a reconnaissance drainage sediment sampling programme. This was designed to follow up indications of surface hydrothermal activity noted by Government geologists during an earlier survey of the Tabar-Feni island chain. Diamond drilling began in September 1983 and by the end of 1989 a payable and proved mineable reserve containing 19 million ounces of gold had been established. Rock types and structures are masked at the surface by intense alteration and weathering. An extensive drilling programme has enabled the identification of these features and the relationships between them necessary for an understanding of the factors controlling gold mineralisation. It has also led to the recognition of two distinct phases of alteration. The first phase of porphyry-style potassic alteration was followed by violent caldera formation, producing extensive brecciation and veining. The second alteration phase partly over- printed the first phase and was an epithermal one, evidenced by argillic, advanced argillic and phyllic assemblages. During this event, a large volume of fluids circulated under the favourable structural conditions; these fluids included a sulphur- rich, neutral chloride brine believed to have transported the gold. Boiling and mixing of circulating fluids in the open breccias is thought to have resulted in deposition of the gold. There is evidence that this process is continuing at the present day.

A prototype portable hyperspectral imager that operates in the visible and near-infrared ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum was field tested at an open-pit mine. The tests were sponsored by the Spokane Research Laboratory, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, as part of an investigation of remote sensing technologies for use in detecting and monitoring conditions in surface mines that could lead to catastrophic slope failure. The spectro-polarimetric imager, built at the Carnegie Mellon Research Institute, employs an acousto-optical tunable filter (AOTF) to control wavelength, a phase retarder to measure polarization signatures, and a digital camera and computer to capture data. The spectral range of the instrument is 450 to 1000 nm at 10-nm intervals. High-resolution hyperspectral images of highwalls, outcrops, hand samples, and drill core were collected in the field. Spectra from the images closely matched those of specific minerals present and were used to classify the images. The field tests were designed to examine the feasibility of using spectral imaging to assist in compiling objective geologic maps of mine highwalls and other hazardous slopes. Results illustrate the capability of the method to discriminate materials within the image, validating the concept of simplified spectral imaging. A contributing factor in many slope failures is the presence and distribution of mechanically incompetent, clay-rich altered rock in slope faces. Spectral features of clays and other minerals are more distinctive in the short-wave and mid-infrared part of the spectrum; the capabilities of the instrument need to be extended into this range to apply the AOTF-based technology to common geologic materials. A field-portable hyperspectral imager could find broad application in remotely identifying diverse materials from solids and coatings to gases.

According to the analysis of surface powered haulage accidents involving off-highway haul trucks in openpit mining, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), reported 1,300 fatal accidents from 1990 to 2005. Of these, 163 were considered off-highway truck haulage accidents, and at least 23 involved collisions of an off-highway truck with a neighboring vehicle or a worker on foot (Nieto and Dagdelen, 2006). In general, an average of 18 nonfatal accidents and three fatal accidents occurred in openpit mining per year when equipment backed over the edge of an embankment, stockpile or dump point (Fessak, et al., 2003). The specific problems that need to be solved can be determined by carefully studying the accidents involving haulage trucks (Marrara, et al., 2004). Solutions to haulage truck safety must consider the human factors affecting each task even when engineering solutions seem most appropriate. In surface haulage, human performance becomes a critical issue because of the unusual demand the vehicle?s places on their human operators: ? Roadways and working areas change frequently in mining operations. ? The sheer mass of mining equipment such as trucks requires control inputs (e.g., braking) far in advance of the desired action. ? Rough roads, loading and unloading impacts can subject the driver to dangerous shocks and vibration. ? Visibility is sharply curtailed by the bulk of the vehicle generating large blind spots. All of the above issues can be attributed partially to the lack of visibility (Pyles et al., 2003). Driver visibility and communications are key issues to reduce mining truck accidents. Analysis of fatalities and injuries involving mining equipment demonstrates the need to develop new intervention and control strategies to mitigate the risks associated with mining equipment operation. Ongoing development of these and other new strategies is required to achieve a reduction of injury in the mining industry

Oxidation testing of copper-clad steel strip was performed in a muffle furnace to determine whether copper in contact with steel scrap could be removed by oxidation in an airstream at high temperatures. Substantially all of the copper was oxidized before any significant iron oxidation occurred. The rate of copper oxidation was not affected by contact with iron. Copper oxide scale separated spontaneously from the underlying metal during cooling. Results indicate the possibility of removing light-gage copper coatings and components from ferrous scrap by oxidation in an incineration process.

"Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) used as catalyst which reduces toxic substances in emission gas exhausted from an automobile should extensively be recycled because they are rare metals produced only at the limited regions. The recycling process is to smelt an alumina honeycomb, in which PGM is built, in molten iron with flux such as lime and silica to separate them. PGMs are concentrated in molten iron while alumina in slag.The objective of this study is to understand the factor to concentrate PGMs in liquid iron as much as possible. Fundamental research of the distribution of the PGMs between the slag and liquid iron was carried out to recover the value metals of platinum, palladium and rhodium from the three-way auto catalyst. The distribution ratios of platinum, palladium and rhodium between the Al2O3-CaO-SiO2 slag and liquid iron are from 10-6 to 10-5, and these are concentrated in comparison with slag phase by about 1 million times to the liquid iron at 1873 K. The distribution ratios of platinum between the FexO-CaO-SiO2 slag and liquid iron decrease from 0.1 to 2?10-4 with increasing the CaO content in the slag. The CaO addition to the FexO unary slag is effective in concentrating platinum in molten iron.Based on the distribution ratios obtained in this work, recovery of PGMs was determined. The recovery of platinum, palladium and rhodium increase with increasing the mass ratio, Mmetal/Mslag. In the case of the conditions of Mmetal/Mslag = 0.04, the recoveries of PGMs showed more than 99.97%. The use of liquid iron and carbon saturated liquid iron as the collector metal is advantageous for the PGM recycling of the three-way auto catalyst. We found that PGMs are enriched to the molten iron or the carbon saturated iron and the slag loss of PGMs is negligible small."

Many important materials are derived entirely or partially as byproducts of primary copper, lead, and zinc production. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report examines the collective role of byproducts with regard to the economics of domestic mineral production, and their individual significance in terms of dollar value, end uses, and strategic considerations. The study also analyzes circumstances that have affected the competitiveness and structure of the U.S. copper, lead, and zinc industries, and factors that impact byproduct availability. These factors include production capacity at smelters and refineries, process technology, changing sources and composition of ores, regulations, foreign ownership, and byproduct demand and price. Policy considerations regarding stockpiling, regulations, and research are assessed.

The performance of a rotating fixed bed reactor in recovering copper from industrial waste solutions by cementation is studied under various conditions. The rotating fixed bed is made of stacked woven steel screens to take advantage of two features of screens: the ability to present large area per unit volume and their ability to promote high turbulence. Variables studied are initial CuSO4 concentration, bed rotation speed, mesh number of the screens and bed thickness. The presence of baffles was found to increase the rate of cementation. The data were correlated by a dimensionless mass transfer correlation suitable for the design and operation of large scale cementation reactors.

Train services through the Channel Tunnel linking Britain and France where scheduled to be fully restored in February 2009 following several months of repairs after a major fire in the tunnel on Sept. 11, 2008. A lorry caught fire on a shuttle train carrying heavy goods vehicles bound for France through the 50-km- (31-mile-) long northern tunnel. The fire, that spread to other vehicles, raged for about 16 hours. The extreme temperatures of up to 1,000º C (1,832° F) caused extensive damage to about 600 m (2,000 ft) of the 7.6-m- (25-ft-) diameter tunnel?s concrete lining, approximately 11 km (7 miles) in from the French entrance. The Channel Tunnel operator, Eurotunnel, awarded the repair con-tract, estimated to be between ?50 to 60 million, to a consortium of Freyssinet, Eurovia Travaux Ferroviaires (ETF) and Vinci Energies. Freyssinet was appointed to look after the civil engineering works, while ETF would be responsible for track and overhead wire restoration and Vinci Energies responsible for other equipment. The technique of hydrodemolition, which uses high-pressure water jets to remove concrete from various structures, was specified as the method to remove the fire damaged concrete. Freyssinet subcontracted the concrete removal to the specialist hydrodemolition and industrial cleaning contractor Philip Lasserat.

This Federal Bureau of Mines publication is a statistical analysis of all surface and underground coal mine fires reported in the United States from 1950 to 1977. Accounts of selected nonreportable fires and opinion data gathered via interviews with mine safety directors were separately analyzed. Both reported and nonreportable fires were analyzed by time trends, State, ignition source, burning substance, location in mine, equipment, detection, duration, injuries, fatalities, and successful extinguishing agents. It was found that the majority of all mine fires were electrical in origin. The equipment most frequently involved in underground fires was conveyor belts, and in surface fires, it was crushers and/or breakers. Underground fires occurred most often near the working face. Water and hand-portable extinguishers were the most common methods of extinguishment.

A systematic study of groundwater conditions at eight underground mine sites exhibiting a wide range of groundwater qualities throughout Australia has been completed at the WA School of Mines. This has resulted in a new corrosivity classification for groundwater driven corrosion processes for cement grouted cable strand used in the Australian underground mining industry. The new corrosivity classification is simple to use and corrosion rates may be predicted from readily obtained in situ measurements of groundwater dissolved oxygen.

"INTRODUCTION During the early 1920's world-wide attention was attracted to a group of oil fields (Mexia, Wortham, Currie, Richard, and Powell) later known as Mexia-Powell fault-line fields in Limestone, Freestonne, and Navarro Counties, Tex. Enormous yields of high-gravity oil from the wells in these fields resulted in drilling campaigns that quickly surpassed all previous records for rapid, intensive development of productive areas. The discovery of oil in the Mexia filed in September 1921 was followed quickly by the finding of oil in the Currie field in October. In January 1923 oil was discovered in the Powell field; in February 1924 the Richland field, midway between Currie and Powell fields, was brought in; and in November 1924 oil was discovered in the Wortham field, situated between Mexia and Currie fields. Each of the fileds was developed rapidly: wells were spaced closely and had high initial production; production peaks were reached early in the producing lives of the fields; subsequent decline was rapid, and there was early and rapid encroachment of edge water.In 1927 Bureau of Mines engineers, in their investigations a engineering conditions in oil,completed a preliminary study and published a mimeographed report 4/ on underground conditions in the Wortham field, and in 1928 they reported on production and development problems in the Powell Field. 5/ field."

Results are reported of a study of the reactions occurringin the combustion of chaIcopyrite particles underconditions simulating those in the shaft of a flashsmelter.The reactions were studied using kinetic and mineralogicaltechniques. Reactions. rates above 500°C wererapid, most of the reaction taking place in less than 50ms. Final products were copper-iron ferrites with spineltype structures. Probable reaction mechanisms are discussed.

A novel, low-pressure adaptation of Praxair?s coherent jet technology utilizing CoJet lances was developed for application at Inco&apos;s Copper Cliff Smelter where oxygen is available in large tonnage quantities but only at relatively low supply pressures (< 193 kPa header pressure). The project objectives were to evaluate the effect of coherent jet technology on controlling oxygen lance accretion (?horn?) formation and to increase oxygen efficiency in the Inco Oxygen Top-Blowing Nitrogen Bottom Stirring (TBBS) MK Reactor used for converting nickel- contaminated chalcocite to semi-blister copper. This paper describes the development and subsequent implementation and testing of two CoJet lances in this application.

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. Quantitative point analysis and microchemical mapping identified 52 different types of mineral in inclusions, usually ranging in size from 5 to less than 1 micrometre, inherited from source bedrock. A combination of grain chemistry, heterogeneity and inclusions provides a grain signature reflecting the type and history of source mineralisation. Several grains from an alluvial site are needed, to allow for bedrock variation and the presence of inclusions in only 10-20% of grains. A total of 1 530 grains obtained from 30 localities in Scotland were of ten types, two of them minor variants. Two types in the Highlands may be related to centres of Caledonian igneous activity, but the most widespread is likely to have been of deep-seated origin and structurally controlled. Gold in the Ochil Hills is probably from a source associated with Devonian andesitic activity. In the Southern Uplands, grain types reflect two separate episodes of mesothermal lode gold mineralisation and relationships with Permian red beds/mafic volcanics and with Tertiary dykes

Olympic Dam has been investigating mine design options for the South Mine Area (SMA), which will continue using the existing sublevel open stoping (SLOS) method. The SMA is an undeveloped mining area, located south of the existing underground mining areas currently in production at Olympic Dam. The SMA study reached the stage where geotechnical inputs were required for stope design, infrastructure location and ground support forecasts. A large database of geotechnical data was collected to inform open pit designs for the ODX (Olympic Dam expansion) project (resulting from 659 drill holes). This geotechnical data has since been reprocessed to align with design inputs required for the SLOS mining method. The result has been the construction of a preliminary three-dimensional mining rock mass model (MRMM) that has been incorporated into preliminary stope mine design and infrastructure layout assessments, which have taken into account the predicted prevailing ground conditions.As with any model, it is necessary to improve the confidence in its predictability; therefore the model must be calibrated. The preliminary SMA MRMM was no exception. First pass calibration was possible with results from underground geotechnical window mapping from exposed rock mass conditions in the lateral development and surface geotechnical holes for ventilation shafts.The SMA project continues to advance and has started a program of resource drilling. Selected holes have been identified that target data limited areas. This will ensure that the data gaps are infilled in order to maintain the required data density required to improve the model confidence. In addition, further underground window mapping in the SMA will provide ‘mine scale drill hole’ data that can be used to either update the MRMM or as part of planned future calibration. Stope performance data from stopes will provide further valuable data for calibration purposes.The proposed paper will present the process and findings that have been followed in order to establish a well calibrated geotechnical model that can be used with an acceptable level of confidence in the ongoing refinements of the mine design and planning process for the SMA.CITATION:Thin, I, Morizzi, L, Mungur, G and Seymour, C, 2016. "Deformation Banding ( DB ) in cold rolled mild steel has been experimentally established by microstructure investigation. Deformation banding model includes such deformation mode when it is applied to rolling texture simulation. The cause for the occurrence of deformation banding is the reduction of the total work for plastic deformation through a relaxation of the deformation constraints. In the first DB model, all grains are assumed to band from the first deformation step. Such an unrealistic assumption has been eliminated in the new model by the introduction of a banding criterion based on an energy minimizing approach. The prediction is closer to the measured texture by applying banding criterion and setting critical resolved shear stresses (CRSS) ratio for { 110 } and { 112 } slip modes to 0.85.IntroductionBased on the continuum theory of plastic flow and deformation mechanism of crystallographic dislocation slip, Taylor's FC ( Full Constrain ) theory [1] has been widely used in texture modeling. As the process of cold rolling of sheet materials produces a microstructure consisting of elongated or equiaxed flat grain or cell, the ""lath"" and ""pancake"" relaxed constraints ( RC ) models [2, 3] were introduced as the successful improvements over the classical FC model. It has been also recognized that crystals may split into different orientations during deformation and the term deformation banding is used to describe such deformation processes [4, 5]. Lee et al. [6, 7] pointed out that the success of the RC theory in predicting textures depends on the physical processes of deformation banding. They developed so called Deformation Banding ( DB ) model by considering DB in the longitudinal plane to be accounted for by the RC method and allowing DB in the rolling plane. DB model was applied to simulate the texture development in bee case [8], the predicted bee rolling textures are in reasonable agreement with the measured textures. In the first DB model, however, all grains are assumed to band right upon the first deformation step. A banding criterion was formulated [7] which states that DB will occur if the work used in DB model is less than that in RC model. Such criterion has been incorporated into the original DB model for texture simulation and is referred to as DBC ( Deformation Banding Criterion ) model."
