"Paste backfill has replaced cemented rock fill as one of the components to improve ground · control and mine safety at the Macassa Operation of Kinross Gold Corporation in Kirkland Lake, Ontario. It is the first operation to utilize "" flash thickening ""of very fine gold tailings to a paste consistency in the ""Paste Production and Storage Mechanism"", a joint technical development of Inco and GL&V. The tailings paste is mixed with alluvial sand to produce an engineered quality paste backfill. The development leading up to the decision to proceed with this novel technology is discussed, as well as commissioning of the backfill operation.IntroductionThe occurrence of a major rockburst on November 23, 1993 prompted a review of mining and backfill procedures at the Macassa No 3 shaft . This shaft is some 7238 ft deep and lies in a mining belt that is prone to seismic events. The recommendations were to change the mining from underhand cut and fill to mechanized long hole stopping and to look at alternatives to the rockfill backfill system in place. The Macassa cemented rock backfill operation, while producing the desired fill stiffness had drawbacks as compared to paste fill. With paste fill, placement rates are faster, more openings can be filled, it is less expensive and less prone to the occurrences of compensable incidents.Macassa mining personnel visited the Sudbury operations of Inco in 1993, where development on paste backfill was in progress. As some of the R&D was taking place with funding from the Premier's Council Technology Fund of the Ministry of Trade and Technology of the Province of Ontario , Inco personnel at that time did some feasibility and conceptual consulting on the use of paste fill for the industry. Inco had developed the use of alluvial sand paste fill, an engineered blend of alluvial sand and tailings fines and was doing development work to eliminate the ""conventional"" way of producing paste from mill tailing by thickening and filtration. This latter development work was taking place with GL&V Ontario. That work led to the filing of a joint Inca/ GL&V patent application for the PPSM, the Paste Production and Storage Mechanism with all marketing rights being held by GL&V."

This research project had two main objectives: (1) To identify the smoke limits of gaseous fuel-air mixtures and (2) to obtain and evaluate basic chemical information on the formation of smoke in very rich flames near the smoke limit. Such information would do much to establish the circumstances for car-bon deposition in gas appliances and in other types of combustors. Based on tests with ethylene and propane, these studies showed the following: 1. Smoke limits are related to the yellow-tip limits of the fuel. Previous research established sufficient data to permit prediction of yellow-tip limits on gas burners using a wide variety of fuels. The present study of smoke limits deals only with ethylene-air flames, but the concept that was developed is probably applicable to other fuels.

When we apply the Au nanoparticle superlattices to the future nanooptical and nanoelectronic devices, the control of not only the particle size but also the interparticle spacing and symmetry of superlattice are the essential problems to be overcome. First, we developed a novel synthetic procedure to precisely control the particle size of alkanethiol-protected Au nanoparticles in the range from 1.5 to 9.7 nm by the heat-treatment of the small Au nanoparticles in the solid state. Absorption and nonlinear optical properties of alkanethiol-protected Au nanoparticle superlattices were then elucidated. On the other hand, the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) 2D superlattices of small Au nanoparticles with the interparticle spacings from 1.9 to 3.6 nm were successfully prepared by using newly-synthesized ligand for single electron tunneling devices. Finally, various symmetric superlattices, such as chain (2-fold), quasi-honeycomb (3-fold), square (4-fold), etc., of Au nanoparticles could be produced by making use of interligand interactions or some templates.

"Modern train load out stations are becoming faster and have the ability to load a 100 wagon train in less than three hours. At 70 metric tonnes per wagon, that is an average fill rate of 2333 t/h and considering the train is continuously moving, the instantaneous feed rate into the wagon is in the region of 4200 t/h.The main feed conveyor that maintains the level in the surge hopper, above the final weigh hopper, operates in excess of 5000 t/h to ensure uninterrupted charging of the weigh hopper to not disrupt the train loading operation.To avoid demurrage costs (a charge by the Rail Operating Company for exceeding the contractually agreed loading time) the train has to be handled speedily and efficiently and spend the absolute minimum time at the loading facility. Everything else has a much lower priority, including sampling.Thermo Fisher Scientific’s brief was an engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract to provide a sampling scheme adjacent to the prepurchased and predesigned load-out facility, but which interfaced seamlessly with the loading system of the trains and provided the following: an instantaneous particle size distribution (PSD) result for each truck loaded, and a final PSD for the total train prior to the train leaving the loading facility a crushed (-3 mm) composite sample for chemical analysis for the whole train a composite physical analysis sample for the whole train.The design presented some interesting challenges to our team, but the end result is a system that not only ‘stands alone’ but interfaces seamlessly with the loading system. Crystalline silica (quartz, cristobalite, and tridyrnite) is regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) because of its potential for causing debilitating but nonmalignant lung diseases. In 1987, the International Agency for Research Against Cancer (IARC) conducted a review of the health literature and concluded that crystalline silica was a probable human carcinogen. As a result of this finding, OSHA was required to regulate crystalline silica under its Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). The standard requires that all materials handled by OSHA-regulated facilities be labeled according to the requirements of RCS and that workers receive proper training on the handling of the material if the crystalline silica content equals or exceeds 0.1 weight percent (0.1 %). MSHA currently is considering enacting its own RCS. This will be similar to OSHA's RCS. If the standard is enacted, most mineral producers will have to determine the respirable monitor filter and bulk crystalline silica contents of their ores and products so that workers and/or customers will know whether they are in compliance with the 0.1% HCS and/or the OSHA permissible exposure level (PEL) of 50 µg for an 8-hour workday for respirable crystalline silica as determined from monitor samples. Two major concerns with the RCS are the widespread occurrence of crystalline silica in nature and the suitability of current technology for routinely determining crystalline silica concentrations at the 0.1 % RCS level. Most ores are extracted from silica-bearing deposits and it is a common constituent of rocks and soils. OSHA's RCS will have the greatest impact on the producers of crushed stone, diatomite, dimension stone, gravel, industrial sand, perlite, pumice, pyrophyllite, sand, and talc because these materials frequently are shipped directly from the mill to the customer. MSHA's RCS would affect nearly all mineral producers. Those producers that have crystalline silica present in concentrations near the 0.1 % cutoff point will have the most difficulty with the analysis. Crystalline silica can be quantified at the 0.1 % level by X-ray diffractometry in simple systems containing one, two, and possibly three minerals if (1) none of the accessory minerals has X-ray diffraction reflections that coincide or overlap with those of crystalline silica and (2) the standard has a particle size distribution and crystallinity similar to those of the sample. In some instances, it may not be possible to determine the crystalline silica content of a sample with any degree of certainty using the recommended regulatory protocol. In all cases, it is recommended that a qualified mineralogist identify the minerals in a sample prior to any regulatory analysis. Additionally, the uncertainty as to whether some silica polymorphs should be classified as crystalline or noncrystalline and the suitability of metastable high-temperature standards, such as cristobalite and tridyrnite, for regulatory analysis at ambient temperatures should be addressed further. This overview is written both to highlight these problems and to serve as a guide for analysts, regulators, and industry personnel who are involved in the crystalline silica issue. It also covers some of the difficulties and/or shortcomings in quantifying crystalline silica, such as the ubiquitous mineral quartz, in the workplace.

The work described in this report was directed toward identifying and devising methods to minimize the previously observed variability between working level hour exposures and the alpha particle track densities resulting on Track Etch films exposed to mine atmospheres containing radon and radon daughters. The disequilibrium between radon and its daughters was shown to directly affect this Track Etch film calibration factor. The wide range of disequilibrium states possible in mine situations amply explains the variability in the previous tests. A file of published mine atmosphere composition data was compiled and was used, along with atmospheric compositions derived from several theoretical models ref the atmospheric behavior, to evaluate the variability of several dosimeter configurations and concepts. A nonlinear, iterative regression analyse; was formulated that successfully predicted working levels to within 8 to 10% from only the alpha particle activities (Rn, RA, and RaC') data such as are obtainable from Track Etch films over a wide range of disequrlibrium conditions. A model expressing atmospheric concentrations as a function of radon source strength, plate out rate factor, ventilation rate and the fractional re-entry by recoil of previously platted-out daughters was derived and used in the regression program in addition to preparing a set of reference tables and graphs showing the disequilibrium behavior of the atmosphere. Other factors that can affect the Track Etch Film response writ considered and shown to he less crutial than the disequilibrium state. The results of a series of exposures of a dosimeter concept fixture in the Denver Mining Research Center radon chamber air presented and discussed.

With the production increase of Oil Sand in Fort McMurray Alberta, more efficient tailings disposal has become a priority for Syncrude Canada Ltd. A lot of work on tailings research and development has been compiled to determine the most effective deposition to increase reclamation options, water re-use and thermal energy recovery. Efficient flocculation of fine oil sand tailings is the key technology for thickening. It was identified that flocculation of fine transition/marine ore tailings using a single flocculant was not effective. The thickener overflow contains 1-4% solids content compared with the target solids content of <0.5% obtained with Estuarine ore. As a result, novel processes for treatment of fine transition/marine ore tailings have been developed at Syncrude Bitumen Production Development since June 2004. While the conventional processes using a single flocculant, a single coagulation, or a coagulant-flocculant combination was ineffective for transition and marine ore tailings, the new processes including Coagulation-Flocculation-Coagulation (CFC), Flocculation-Coagulation (FC) and Flocculation-Coagulation-Flocculation (FCF) were acceptable options. The key components of these technologies consist of the recipe of chemicals and their adding sequence. With these technologies, almost all sub-micron clay minerals are aggregated together and settle as a whole, resulting in a clear supernatant of less than 0.1% solids.

According to OSHA 29 CFR Part 1910.119 (Process safety management of highly hazardous chemicals), Canadian Provincial Safety Standard Acts or Federal laws, the owner of stationary equipment (Boilers, stacks, piping, pressure vessel, etc.) should follow a complete inspection plan and follow an Integrity Operating Windows (IOW’s) adapted for each of them. Some important variables shall be included in the inspection plan such as specific damage mechanisms versus alloy used in the original design, process conditions, etc. Some North American’s standards exist, like the one listed in ASME PTB-2-2009, to help owner to create such inspection program. The new API RP 584, Integrity Operating Windows (IOW’s) can guide Mining & Metals owners to find out their specific IOW’s. Inspection frequencies are often described in the Jurisdiction Safety Acts such as the British Columbia B.C. Reg. 104/2004, etc. but often left in the owner representative responsibility (Bill C-21, federal Act to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act). Every deficiency should be repaired according to recognized Codes such as ASME PCC-2, etc.. If flaws not conforming to the original Code of construction are found, this article will introduce the Fitness-For- Service assessment principles to be able to accept it without any repairs.

"INTRODUCTION Project Background The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)/Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ), as part of their New York and New Jersey Harbor Deepening Project, will dredge this shipping channel to a depth of 16.5 m below mean low water (MLW). By deepening the channel, the new generation of larger, “post-panamax” container ships coming to U.S. waters as a result of the expansion of Panama Canal can be accommodated in local marine terminals, helping to retain the nearly 300,000 jobs and $12 billion in annual wages the PANYNJ provides to the region. The existing siphons are situated at a depth that could be compromised by the planned dredging of the channel (nycedc.com). The purpose of this project is to build a new 1.83 m diameter water main inside a 3.66m diameter tunnel replacing the two existing siphons in order to provide the necessary backup water supply to Staten Island across the Anchorage Channel within the Upper New York Bay from Brooklyn. The proposed tunnel is approximately 2.9 km long and at a depth of at least 26 m below MLW. The project is funded jointly by New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) and PANYNJ and is managed by New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC). The contractor of the project is Tully/OHL JV, the designer is CDM/HMM JV, and the CM is LiRo/PB JV. History of New York City’s Soft Ground Tunneling The New York City area has a relatively long history of soft ground tunneling, commencing in the late 19th century. Construction of the first Hudson River tunnel crossings was begun (but not completed) in 1874 for the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad using compressed air supplying a shield. The work continued intermittently until the project finally opened for service in 1907. These 1.72km long tunnels (maximum depths of 29 m) are still in operation and now operated as the PATH Tunnels. They are approximately 5.5m diameter utilizing cast iron segments. The river bed consisted of primarily silt with shallow rock near the New York side. Air “leaks” occurred during the compressed air excavations resulting in some serious “blows” with water and soil entering the tunnel, including one incident with 20 deaths."

Facts obtained by the Bureau of Mines on the dust-explosion hazard in air of materials used in the plastics industry are presented for 313 samples studied in the laboratory. Information is given on ignition temperature of dust clouds and layers, minimum explosive concentration, minimum energy required for ignition, explosion pressure and rates of pressure rise, amount of inert dust required to prevent ignition and flame propagation, and, in some instances, on the limiting oxygen concentration in an atmosphere to prevent ignition by spark and by heated surface. The effects of particle shape, additives, and resin structure on explosibility are discussed. Relative explosibility of the materials is related to the ignition sensitivity and explosion severity and is denoted by an empirical index. Recognition of the degree of hazard will facilitate adoption of adequate measures for preventing ignition and explosion during manufacturing or processing.

THE purpose of this paper is a comparison, based on genesis, of the ore deposits associated with the igneous rocks of the central Montana Rockies. Considered separately, without attention to their origin, the orebodies appear to be distributed haphazard, with no fundamental laws controlling their position and character. It is believed, however, that if all the factors be weighed, this apparent confusion will to a large degree disappear. The, first essential to such a comparison is detailed knowledge of the individual mines, as to their geographic position (see Fig. 1), their mineralogical character, and in particular the derivation of their ores.1 The authors of this paper have pursued such an investigation for the past 6 years, and have accumulated a mass of evidence that enables a preliminary correlation to be attempted. The performance of an adiabatic calorimeter for measuring heats of oxidation of coal is assessed and suggestions made for its improvement and calibration. The use of magnetic analysers for measuring small oxygen deficiencies in air is described and three different methods of measuring the output for such a meter are characterised. The occurrence of spontaneous heating in an 800 tonne heap of Wyoming coal is briefly described. The major part of the report deals with the oxidation of Pittsburgh seam and Wyoming subbituminous coal and describes an experiment in which 1 tonne of Wyoming coal is stored in a 5 metre long insulated container whilst air was passed through. Temperature rises, rates of oxygen absorption and gas compositions of the air stream were measured. The report relates the results of these-experiments to a theory of spontaneous heating developed by Stott and Quan which stresses the importance of the moisture content of the coal and the relationship between the heat necessary to evaporate this water to the heat available from coal oxidation. The work was carried out over a five month period and the emphasis is on demonstrating the effects of moisture transfer and confirming the theory of Stott and Quan.

INTRODUCTION The level of analysis for the selection of extraction practices and equipment for surface mining differs significantly from that found in underground mining. In underground mines, manufacturers establish the operating ranges of the equipment, such as continuous miners, loaders, and boring machines, based upon required clearances. Even in conventional mining, the drilling and blasting operation is usually based upon experience. The selection of extraction methods and equipment for surface mining is more complex. Since the equipment is not as confined as in deep mining, and the topography tends to be highly variable over the limits of the mining property, primary extraction equipment must be sized according to reach and capacity. Further, due to the depositional characteristics of the over- burden, drilling and blasting patterns must be well- designed to provide proper fragmentation. The following sections provide a general outline for the selection of surface excavation practices and equipment. The topics covered include drilling and blasting and the selection of both primary extraction equipment (draglines and stripping shovels) and secondary extraction equipment (bulldozers, scrapers, and front-end loaders). EXCAVATION FUNDAMENTALS Before discussing surface excavation, a few concepts need to be defined. A bank cubic yard of material is equal to one cubic yard as it lies in its natural or undisturbed state. A loose cubic yard is that portion of a bank yard that after being disturbed has expanded to measure one cubic yard. Swell is the volume increase of a material when it is removed from the natural state. Finally, load factor is the percentage decrease in the density of a material from its natural state to a loose state. Table 1 summarizes these concepts for various materials. When the amount of overburden to be removed to meet a predetermined production rate is established, a suitable bucket size for the primary stripping equipment must be calculated. The following equation can be used: NBSIZE = TBC/[(OF) (BF)] (1) where NBSIZE is the actual bucket capacity after considering the swell percentage, the bucket fill factor, and the operating efficiency; TBC is the theoretical bucket capacity (TBC = COB/NTCPM); OF is the operating efficiency; BF is the bucket fill factor; COB is the cubic yards of overburden to be removed; NTCPM is the number of theoretical cycles per month [NTCPM = (SMH) (3600)/(CT)]; SMH is the scheduled monthly hours; and CT is the cycle time in seconds. FRAGMENTATION PROCEDURES Drilling Where the strength of overburden material is such that blasting is required prior to excavation, drilling is conducted before using explosives. Two methods of drilling are found in mining-percussion and rotary. Penetration of overburden by percussion drilling is carried out by successive impacts of the bit into the rock. Emphasis in this section will be placed on rotary drilling, because for surface mining it is the most versatile form of overburden penetration. Rotary drilling is conducted by rotating a rigid string of tubular rods to which a rock-cutting bit is attached. The drilling energy is supplied by rotation as well as thrust and the cutting action consists of abrasion, scraping, spalling, or chipping. The size range for rotary-drilled blastholes is from 4 in. to 15 in., with 9 in. and 12 in. being common sizes. There are two types of bits used for rotary drilling-drag and rolling cutter. Drag bits are applicable in soft to medium-soft shales or their equivalents. Since their effectiveness is dependent upon a successful scraping action, drilling thrust is lower for drag bits than for rolling cutter bits; the opposite is true for torque requirements. The bits are usually fitted with replace- able tungsten-carbide cutters. Rolling cutter bits, though available in a two-cone configuration, are usually of the three-cone style (Table 2). The rolling cones have either large steel teeth for drilling through soft formations or small tungsten-car- bide inserts for drilling through hard formations. Table 3 relates bit size and weight to the strength of the rock. The major advantage of rotary drilling is its rapid drilling rate. This is due to the fact that, unlike percussion drilling, rock penetration is uniform with depth. In spite of the many contributions that have been made to our knowledge of the creep properties of polycrystalline lead, the precise influence of various factors on these properties is not yet fully understood. Indeed, the position is such that several important points in connection with the creep of lead are a matter of controversy. This has been brought about largely by the fact that, in the case of lead, the changes that are produced in the creep behaviour by slight variations of such factors as the purity, grain sizeand previous treatment are out of all proportion to the magnitude of these variations.In order to study the fundamental properties of lead as related to creep, and so gain a more enlightened perspective with which to consider the creep of lead in general, the work that is described in a series of papers, of which the present paper is the third part, has been carried out. It deals with lead in the form of single crystals.It has been shown (1) - (3) that the grain boundaries as well as the actual grains play a part in the creep of polycrystalline lead. The present work, by eliminating grain boundaries, enables the. contribution of the grains themselves to the process of creep, in other words, crystalline creep, to be studied effectively.This object was, possibly, the major one in this work.

This paper will discuss the design, construction, and performance of the support of excavation on the San Diego State University LRT Station. The vertical elements of the system include drilled secant piles and drilled soldier piles. We will discuss the geo-technical characteristics, design and construction considerations, loading criteria, construction techniques, schedule constraints, and performance of the pile and support of excavation systems. In consideration of the conference theme, there will be a discussion of the successful accomplishment of meeting the interim milestone dates of the Contract. The project team cooperatively worked to design and install approximately 1,100 drilled secant and soldier piles as well as excavate and install the balance of the support of excavation elements in such a manner as to minimize the disruption to campus students and operations.

Over and above legal requirements, indiscriminate destructionof fish and other aquatic resources is not in a company’s best interests because of concerns relatingto public image, as well as the need to secure future contracts."

Bwana Mkubwa is a 50 000 tons per annum copper cathode producer, owned by First Quantum Minerals and located in Ndola, on the Zambian Copperbelt. The Bwana Mkubwa solvent-extraction circuit was started up in 1997. In 2002, the plant began treating ore from First Quantum?s Lonshi mine located in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Lonshi ore is exceptionally fine and the amount of solids in the feed solution reporting to the solvent-extraction feed solution increased dramatically. Initially, crud was filtered in a filter press, but this rapidly blinded and seldom produced anything better than a wet sludge containing large quantities of organic. In December 2003 the decision was made to install a Flottweg Z4E-3/441 Tricanter® centrifuge to recover organic from the crud. The installation was completed in June 2004 and has since led to significant improvements in plant operability and savings in organic consumption.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating vanadium recovery from various domestic resources. A low-grade carnotite ore sample containing 0.34 pct V20S and 0.04 pct U30S was leached, and the results were compared with those of similar leach tests using a mill-grade sample containing 1.26 pct V205 and 0.19 pct U308. Experiments on the two ore samples included agitation leaching, pugging, salt-roast leaching, and autoclave leaching. None of the leaching methods investigated showed any significant advantage over another except autoclaving, which reduced the leach time but at the expense of greater acid consumption. Typical of the experimental results attained are the data gathered from the agitation leaching tests. Agitation leaching of the mill-grade ore with 100 lb/ton H2S04 resulted in extractions of 94 pct U308 and 33 pct V205. To increase the vanadium extraction from 33 to 91 pct required concentrations of 300 lb/ton H2S04 and 10 lb/ton NaC103. Complementary agitation leach tests on the low-grade ore required 200 lb/ton H2S04 to extract 94 pct U308, and 300 lb/ton H2S04 and 10 lb/ton NaC103 to extract 90 pct V205.
