Recovery of rare earth elements (REE) from coal-related resources has recently received significant interest due to supply concerns and their key roles in critical industries and defense-related technologies. An integrated flowsheet consisting of sorting, crushing/grinding, physical separation, acid leaching, solvent extraction, and selective precipitation was designed to achieve continuous production of rare earth products from various coal-related resources such as coarse refuse and acid mine drainage. A pilot plant was constructed that enabled continuous testing of the circuitry on a range of different coal-based feedstocks. Despite achieving significant success in producing high-grade rare earth oxide products, low REE recovery values and high operational costs necessitated a re-evaluation of the process flowsheet. This article describes the circuitry improvements that were based on both laboratory and pilot plant test results. Roasting as a pre-leach treatment was found to significantly improve the leaching rate and overall REE recovery values. After roasting West Kentucky No. 13 and Fire Clay coal refuse materials at 600 °C, REE recovery increased by 60 and 40 absolute percentage points, respectively. Rare earth concentration in the pregnant leachate solution (PLS) was increased to around 700 ppm prior to solvent extraction using a staged precipitation method. REEs in the precipitate were re-dissolved, purified, and extracted from the PLS using solvent extraction and selective precipitation to values of around 80%. As a result of the improvements, chemical consumption in the acid leaching and solvent extraction processes was significantly reduced. A techno-economical assessment of the improved flowsheet indicated significant commercialization potential.

Prolonged laboratory and limited pilot plant tests have shown that the Bureau of Mines buffered S02 -H2S process is capable of removing 95 to 99 percent of the S02 from industrial waste gases. Most of the S02 is converted to elemental sulfur; only about I percent converted to sulfate The process comprises (1) washing the flue gas to remove particulates and S03, (2) absorption of the S02 in citric acid or other carboxylate solution, (3) reaction of the loaded solution with H2S in a closed vessel to precipitate the absorbed S02 as elemental sulfur, and (4) separation of the sulfur from the regenerated solution by oil flotation and melting. Two-thirds of the molten sulfur is converted to H2S for use in the sulfur precipitation step by reacting sulfur vapor with natural gas and steam in the presence of an alumina catalyst. The chemistry and mechanism of the process are described, initial laboratory and pilot plant data are summarized, and second-generation laboratory operation and pilot plant design are reviewed. Preliminary cost estimates are presented for recovering sulfur from copper smelter gas, powerplant flue gas, and Claus plant tail gas.

Slag-metal and slag-metal-gas heterogeneous equilibria involving MnO-containing slags have been simulated using recently developed Mn-based alloy and IRSID oxide thermochemical databases. A large number of experimental equilibrium data have been used to verify the calculation results. The experimental slag-metal and slag-metal-gas equilibria in MnO-SiO2binary, MnO-SiO2-CaO and MnO-SiO2-Al2O3ternary, MnO-SiO2-CaO-Al2O3quaternary andMnO-SiO2-CaO-Al2O3-MgO higher-order system can be reproduced within experimental uncertainties. The influence of temperature, CO partial pressure and slag chemistry on the Mn-and Si-distribution equilibria have been quantitatively evaluated. "Commercial development of the United States Oil Shale reserve will require substantial amounts of mining. In fact, even a modest 500,000 barrels per day industry requires a mining effort equivalent to nearly half of the current U.S. coal mining industry. Obviously, mining efforts on this scale will benefit from technological advances. There are a number of areas where advanced technology could impact mining. These include continuous miners, shale transport systems, and blasting. This paperexamines recent developments in computer modeling of blasting and assesses the likelihood of these advances being applied to practical oil shale mining problems."

Currently, the Bear Canyon Mine is facing the challenge of excessively high coal and rock temperatures in one of its headings. In Mine No.3, the air temperature at the 6th Right panel reached 36.4ºC and the coal 83.9 ºC. Due to these severe work conditions, the mining plan has been altered by changing the mine direction to avoid the high temperatures. To investigate the problem, drill holes were developed from the entries and the rock temperatures monitored using K-type thermocouples. The measurements confirmed the existence of localized “hot spots” in the mine. This paper presents a summary of ventilation surveys that were conducted in this mine. It includes the results of coal and rock temperature measurements from drill holes, interpretation of results using a heat flow simulator and the identification of hot spot areas. It also includes a summary of methods that were developed to reduce the hazard and control the problem.

In many cases, however, the shaft is linked to an underground mining plan and the shaft may have to pass through poor ground conditions. Determining the optimal position at which tunnelling can commence i.e. the portal, is critical and requires a thorough geotechnical investigation. Methods used to acquire information for the assessment of the ground conditions are discussed in this paper. Selection of the appropriate methods is dependent on the anticipated ground conditions, the phase of investigation and restrictions due to site access and budget. Non-invasive techniques are often used during preliminary phases and invasive techniques for the detailed investigation. The methods used during each phase of investigation are discussed. Two case studies are then presented to provide examples of the investigative methods used in two different environments. The first being a flat featureless site with thick soils and deeply weathered bedrock, while the second is a mountainous site with differentially weathered rocky outcrops. Based on these cases, it is clear that an understanding of the geology and geomorphology of the site is vital to the final geotechnical assessment. The Fort Knox Mine is located in Alaska?s interior, where the average ambient air temperatures range from -24°C (-11°F) in January to 16°C (61°F) in July. The mill processes a free-milling gold ore utilizing both a gravity recovery circuit and conventional cyanide leach/carbon-in-pulp circuits. Mathematical models have been developed to accurately predict the impact of leach circuit slurry temperature on gold leaching, carbon adsorption and cyanide destruction kinetics. Additionally, an energy-balance approach has been used to model the seasonal variations in slurry temperatures throughout the Fort Knox mill. The energy-balance model, combined with the kinetics models previously developed to predict plant performance, was used to justify a tailing thickener installation at the Fort Knox Mine. This paper describes the development of the energy-balance model and its prediction of plant performance assuming a tailings wash thickener to reduce heat loss from the mill. Also presented is an analysis of the post-project plant performance that validates the model and shows that the mine produced an additional 596 kg (19,155 oz) of gold while reducing mill reagent costs by $6,302,000 during the first 38 months of operation.

Measurements and analyses were conducted of whole-body vibration aboard seven commercially available passenger and/or recreational vehicles: sedan; sport-utility vehicle (SUV); pickup truck; moving truck; motorcycle; all-terrain vehicle (ATV); and boat. The purpose of the testing was to measure and assess whole-body vibration exposure in a range of typical vehicle environments in order to gain understanding of typical exposure levels characteristic of activities of daily living. Vehicle models tested (and model year) were: Ford Taurus (1995); Jeep Cherokee Sport (2000); Toyota Tundra SR5 (2002); Ford F-350 (1997); Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Classic (2004); Yamaha Kodiak 400 4x4; and Steiger Craft Model 21 Montauk. All vehicles were tested with their standard factory-installed seats and were operated under a range of normal operating conditions and speeds typical of intended vehicle use. Methods The measurement, processing, analysis, and exposure assessment methods follow the guidance of generally accepted, national and international consensus standards relevant to the evaluation of whole-body vibration, including ISO 2631-1 [1] and ANSI S3.18 [2]. Seats were instrumented with low-mass triaxial accelerometers mounted in seat pads. Accelerometers used in the test are specified to have flat frequency response over the frequency range of 0.5 to 80 Hz, and all accelerometers were recently calibrated traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Seat pads were installed following guidance in the relevant standards [1, 2], with sensitive axes of the accelerometers following the standard coordinate system with respect to the seated occupant. (The x-axis represents fore-aft motion; the y-axis represents side-to-side motion; and the z-axis represents vertical motion with respect to the occupant.) Vibration data processing and analysis, including filtering, sampling, frequency-weighting, averaging, summation, and determination of basic and additional metrics followed procedures in the relevant standards [1, 2]. Digitized time series data were acquired and stored using a PC-based data acquisition system. Whole-body vibration exposure analyses were conducted via post-processing. During data processing, recorded periods of seat acceleration that were identified and verified as resulting from occupant-induced motion rather than vehicle motion were excluded prior to exposure analysis. "Comparative surface analysis of floated and rejected free gold grains from a number of full scale benefication plants and from pilot plant testwork, has shown silver (the most common impurity in gold) and sulphur invariably in greater concentration on floated gold grains, implying that they assisted gold flotation (gold activators). Collector loading measurements on individual gold grains from concentrates of staged rougher flotation tests on a cyclone U/F product of a pyritic gold ore, revealed first progressively lower concentrations of the collector monomer on gold from each follow-up concentrate and secondly a direct proportionality between the surface concentration of silver and the collector monomer. These two observations leave no doubt that silver activates gold and that collector monomers play a significant, previously not fully recognized role in gold flotation.INTRODUCTIONGold to some degree is naturally floatable in industrial systems, which means that it can be recovered without collector addition (Marsden and House, 1992). This is due to the adsorption of hydrocarbons and deposition of sulphur, which are dependent on the metallic properties of gold, particularly its high electrical conductivity, which allows surface electrochemical reactions to occur catalytically and selectively. Cyclic voltammetry has shown that gold can be rendered hydrophobic by deposition of a surface layer of sulphur (Sº) from S2- and HS- solutions (Walker et al., 1984). Twenty monolayers of sulphur were required to produce a hydrophobic gold surface.However, no sulphide flotation plant relies solely on the natural floatability of gold for its recovery. Gold hydrophobicity is enhanced by the addition of flotation collectors such as xanthates (X), dithiophosphates (DTP), dithiophosphinates (DTPI), mercaptobenzothiolates (MBC) etc., as used in sulphide mineral flotation (Dekok, 1973: Adams et al., 1986). The mechanism invoked in enhancing the hydrophobicity of pure gold with the aforementioned four groups of collectors is similar to that of pyrite, whereby collector anions are oxidized at the gold surface to form dimers (Groot, 1987; Marsden and House, 1992; Basilio et al., 1992) As an example, xanthate ions are oxidized at the gold surface to form the neutral dimer dixanthogen (X2):"

"A Demag CC1800 crawler crane was partially erected on crane mats adjacent to a seawall when settlements near a corner of the crane mat area were observed to be slightly larger than previously assessed. A ground improvement program including installation of dry soil cement mix (DSM) piers was implemented to improve soil bearing capacity. Due to near-surface obstructions, only 75 percent of the DSM piers were installed to the design depth. Because of the partial installation of the DSM piers, an evaluation of the crane pad stability and the effect of the crane loading on the stability of an adjacent 10-ft high concrete seawall, which was believed to have limited (if any) reserve capacity, was required. A two-dimensional finite element model was developed to evaluate the responses of the partially improved ground and the sea wall to the loads imposed by the crane. Geotechnical site investigation and laboratory testing programs were performed to better define the subsurface conditions near the area where settlements occurred and to provide the required mechanical parameters for the soil constitutive model. Analysis results indicate that total and differential settlements of the crane pad and the increase in load on the seawall were tolerable provided limited excavation and replacement of weak dredged soils outside the DSM area would be implemented.INTRODUCTION & BACKGROUNDA Demag CC1800 was erected on 8 ft × 16 ft crane lattice mats at about 12 ft from an existing seawall. Approximately 3.5 in. of subsidence was observed at one corner of the crane mats, while the crane was partially erected and stationary. The approximate location of the crane mats with respect to the existing seawall when the subsidence occurred is shown on Fig. 1.The seawall consists of a reinforced concrete wall connected by reinforced concrete bents to a composite section of sheet pile wall; the total depth of the seawall is about 29 ft. The bents are spaced at about 20’4” and supported by five piles at each bent location. The composite sheet pile consists of concrete and a sheet pile section with a reinforced concrete wale section. The retaining wall is about 10 ft in height and is supported at three levels. The first support level comprises a 2-½” diameter steel rod near the top of the wall spaced at 40’8” the second and third level supports comprise 1-½” diameter steel rods spaced at about 5’6”. The second level support is inclined at about 10 degrees below horizontal and the third level support is oriented horizontally through the wall footing. A schematic of the seawall section is shown on Fig. 2.A geotechnical site investigation was implemented soon after the subsidence was observed. The program included advancing four borings to a depth ranging from 16 ft below ground surface (bgs) to about 30 ft bgs. In general, the investigation showed sandy material (likely fill that was used behind the retaining wall) from the ground surface in two borings located immediately behind the retaining wall. The other two borings furthest from the retaining wall showed very soft to soft clay (possibly dredged material) from the ground surface to a depth of about 10 ft bgs. Based on this information, the ultimate bearing capacity of the subsoils was estimated to range from 1,200 to 2,000 pounds per square feet (psf). From the anticipated crane loading (weight of the crane and loading lifts), a minimum allowable bearing capacity of about 1,500 psf would be required for safe operation. To achieve the required bearing capacity a ground improvement program was selected and implemented."

The application of similarity analysis derived from regional geochemical mapping data to the location of Ni-bearing intrusions was tested in southwest Finland, where a well-known nickel belt is situated. Samples of till from the vicinity of the Vammala and Kylmakoski Ni-Cu deposits, which were collected independently of the Geological Survey of Finland's regional geochemical mapping programme, were used to provide geochemical modelling data. The data consist of the aqua regia-leachable concentrations of 20 elements from the less than 0.06-mm fraction of glacial till. The variables used in the similarity analysis were selected on the basis of a factor analysis in which the method of oblique rotation was used. A hierarchical clustering of the modelling samples produced two main groups. The first group was described as the "nickel deposit environment model" and the second as the "nickel deposit location model". The data for the standardised variables were compared sample by sample with the model data by similarity analysis using the Simana program with a cos theta measure of pattern similarity. The nickel deposit environment model delineated the known Ni belt and indicated an extension to the east. The nickel deposit location model identified target areas of reasonable size with the greatest potential for Ni ores within the nickel belt

"Impala Platinum Limited is the world’s second largest platinum producer, producing more than 1.7 million ounces of the precious metal last year, much of this from the UG-2 reef located in the Bushveld Complex, South Africa. As part of Impala’s ongoing expansion programme, tonnage through their principal UG-2 processing facility, near Rustenburg, was increased 40% in 2001.To accommodate the increased throughput, the role of the existing primary mills was converted from conventional semi-autogenous grinding units, to attrition and selective grinding units, operating in fully autogenous mode. The finer chromite and coarser silicate components in the mill discharge are then separated by screening and processed in dedicated circuits downstream. This way, the need to spend considerable capital to increase primary grinding capacity was averted.In the last year, considerable work has been conducted to evaluate and optimise the two downstream circuits. This has involved an optimisation programme of sampling and diagnostic flotation testing, supported with QemSCAN analysis. This paper will describe the operation of the new circuit. It will also describe some of the more novel aspects and interesting findings from the optimisation programme.INTRODUCTIONThe South African platinum industry is the world’s largest producer of platinum and the world’s second largest producer of palladium. Located in a wide area north of Johannesburg, the industry mines ores from the Bushveld Complex, one of the world’s great mineral treasure chests, containing over 70 percent of the world’s platinum, as well as extensive reserves of the other PGE (platinum group elements), chrome, manganese and vanadium. The industry employs about 180,000 people in, predominantly, underground mines, which together form an almost unbroken circle of mining operations 200 km in diameter."

This Workshop was held at the Doubletree Inn, Seattle, Washington from September 26 to 28, 1997. Run under the auspices of the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI), it was co-funded by the newly formed Japanese Association of Micropiles (JAMP), and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The Workshop was jointly organized and facilitated by Fujita Research Corporation and ECO Geosystems, Inc., with close support by Donald B. Murphy Contractors, Inc. DFI kindly consented to publish these Proceedings. As is clear from the list of attendees, 42 specially invited engineers from all aspects of micropile technology were present, representing Japanese, European and American practice. This proved to be a most friendly and interactive group of people, who freely exchanged ideas, views and close comradeship, not only during the technical sessions, but (and especially!) during the numerous social events. Perhaps the best illustration of this came in Day 2 when the attendees were divided into five competing teams, each comprising representatives from the different geographic groupings. These teams had to quickly devise solutions to two technical problems (using standard data previously provided. A team of "referees" (who also acted as "coaches") later determined the most apposite response, based on constructability design concept, cost, schedule and so on. Not only were the winning team very liberal in distributing the prize (vintage California champagne) among themselves, but the whole Workshop soon benefited from their generous division of the spoils of victory.

This report is one of a series published by the Bureau of Mines describing methods and practices at various mines throughout the United States. A previous program, conducted from 1928 to 1939, was well received by the mining industry and technical institutions and provided much source material for engineering textbooks and technical handbooks. The stringent wartime demands on the mining industry, the rapidly changing postwar economic situation, and greatly accelerated technologic growth have combined to render many of the previous data obsolete. The objective of the present program is to assemble reliable technical information on mining methods and practices throughout the country and present it for the use of the mining industry, technical schools, textbook authors, and other interested persons. This report deals with the design and development of the Berkeley open- pit mine at Butte, Mont., owned and operated by The Anaconda Company. The Berkeley pit is but one facet of a well-organized and integrated copper-mining operation involving the entire Butte district. Vein-type mining, important for 75 years, is still in progress at depths from 600 feet to nearly 1 mile; on intermediate levels, low-grade ore left untouched by earlier vein-type mines is being extracted by block caving entire ore zones,3/ and secondarily enriched but lower grade near-surface portions of the same ore zones are being mined by open-pit operations (fig. 1). The Berkeley pit itself is named for the Berkeley mine, one of the old mines that extracted copper ore from high-grade veins in the area that now will be mined by open-pit methods.

Tiedback walls are now recognized and accepted as a good solution for a variety of structural problems: ? Retaining Walls and Bridge Abutments in cut situations ? Landslide stabilization ? Repair/support of existing walls Acceptable techniques have been developed for anchoring in cohesive and granular soils and in any kind of rock. Methods have been developed for adequately protecting tieback tendons against corrosion and for testing every tieback to verify its long-term load-carrying capacity. However, the major problem that the industry faces today is how do we get constructable and economical tiedback walls contracted for and built with minimal claims. This paper will explore the issue of "constructability" through a look at specific problems from actual projects. From a research report from the Construction Industry Institute, Austin, Texas (1986), constructability is defined "as the optimum use of construction knowledge and experience in planning, design, procurement and field/operations to achieve overall project objectives." Maximum benefits occur when people with construction knowledge and experience become involved at the very beginning of the project." The design and installation of tiebacks has been developed primarily by specialty contractors; each contractor has evolved its own methods of performing the work, and consequently, many of the techniques are patented and proprietary. The real question is, how do we make effective use of this knowledge and experience during the design phase of the project?

Cable bolts have been very effective in mine ground control. Non-tensioned and tensioned cable bolts are now used for both primary and supplemental bolting (Suder, 2001; Mirabile, 2010). In the United States, cable bolts are typically installed in either 1 or 1-3/8 in. (25 or 35 mm) diameter drill holes and, if point anchored only, are utilized with 4 - 5 equivalent feet (1.2 - 1.5 m) of resin. Cable bolts can be tensioned by various methods such as using an expansion shell mounted on the cable or post-tensioned with a hydraulic cable tensioning unit. In recent years there has been a desire to completely encapsulate the cable bolt for corrosion protection. Fully encapsulating a cable bolt with traditional resins can be very difficult. Keystone Mining Services, LLC (KMS) and Jennmar Corporation have developed a new cable bolt that can be fully encapsulated during installation or post-installation with polyurethane (PUR). The Fully-Grouted Cable Bolt (FGCB)* is equipped with a special head that allows the injection of PUR up through the cable bolt head and cable strands, completely encapsulating the cable and filling the drill hole. Although the FGCB was initially developed to fully encapsulate the cable for corrosion protection, it was also found that by modifying the cable bolt head and injection pressure, PUR could be injected into cracks and fissures of the strata to stabilize the roof. This paper details the development of this system and three underground applications under different ground conditions.

"Two analysis tools which have been applied to problems in industrial flotation processes are the application of kinetics and detailed mineralogical or liberation data, both on a size-by-size basis. This paper describes practical examples of the application of kineticsto examination of the entrainment recovery mechanism, the retardation of valuable minerals at the commencement of flotation sections and the resolution of problems related to valuable species with reduced rate constants at the end of sections. Examples of the usefulness of size-by-size liberation data for monthly composite samples of products from a concentrator are also described.IntroductionMuch of the published industrial flotation data on the behaviour of minerals in various size fractions have been obtained from specially conducted surveys with a duration of several hours. Such data are very valuable and provide a record of the behaviour of the entire flotation plant or sections during the interval of the survey. Some examples from the literature can be cited Cameron et al. (1971), Lynch et al. (1981), Frew (1982). Less attention has been given to the value of complementary sized data derived from compositing shift or daily inventory samples over an interval of one or several weeks with repetition of the procedure at the completion of each interval. Mineralogical point count data of the size fractions of such samples and data interpretation are rare in the literature.Kinetic data on the behaviour of valuable and gangue minerals in various size fractions have been reported often for flotation banks. In the experience 0 f the writer, there has been a tendency among operating metallurgists to ascribe problems in the flotation process to rate constant values for gangue minerals which were believed to be unsatisfactorily high. Less attention has been paid to the value for the rate constant for the valuable mineral over the length of a particular bank.Examples of the types of data which were mentioned previously have been obtained from the lead-zinc concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited. The various types of data have been collected to evaluate their worth in order to provide relevant information for both research and operational aspects of the plant."

Most innovations in the mining and processing industries have come from the need to produce more for less. Extracting minerals from the ground is expensive. And it is a constant struggle for mine operators to maintain the line between profitability and loss. The same holds for equipment suppliers. To maintain competitiveness, mining equipment manufacturers are building their machines with an eye to what the customer needs. Equipment makers know that if they do not supply machines that are productive and cost efficient, their competitors will. The result has been that the mining industry can now produce more ore with fewer people and more productive equipment. But, for all of the advances made in equipment, mine operators still demand machines that produce even more, are safer for workers and the environment, require less maintenance and can do the job at lower costs. And equipment manufacturers keep responding with larger, smarter and more technologically advanced machines.

Scattered north and south along a 161-km (100-mile) stretch of Interstate 80, Newmont Min¬ing Corp. owns four active mining properties in Nevada?s northern high desert ? Carlin Trend Operations, Midas, Twin Creeks and Phoenix. Among the four, there are nine openpits, five underground mines and 14 processing facilities. While gold is the predominant ore, silver and copper are also produced. And in a move to hold down energy costs, Newmont built and owns the 200-MW (net), coal-fired TS power plant. This plant provides about 65 percent of the power used for Newmont?s own operations, while the rest is sold to NV Energy, which services Nevada and northeastern California. Bringing the Phoenix Mine ? Newmont?s newest in Nevada ? on-line presented many developmental and operational challenges. Located about 19 km (12 miles) southwest of the town of Battle Mountain, the general area had been home to prospectors and other mining companies since the 1860s. But any profitability in developing the lower grade gold, copper and silver deposit at Phoenix proved elusive, with Battle Mountain Gold being the last company to make an attempt. When Newmont acquired Battle Mountain Gold and its Phoenix reserves in 2001, the lower grade of ore was not a deterrent. Newmont found Nevada-wide cost savings synergies for maximizing profit during the depressed gold market of the late 1990s. The new property was aptly renamed the Phoenix Mine, a nod to its rising from the ashes of the dreams and efforts of previous mine owners.
