Foi a partir deste princípio que nosso projeto foi desenvolvido.Este trabalho tem como objetivo demonstrar a solução de Monitoramento online e preditivo implementada na ArcelorMittal Aços Planos da América do Sul, onde desde o início de sua implementação pudemos capturar benefícios operacionais, melhoria dos processos, otimização, eliminação e/ou diminuição de indisponibilidade de plantas, entre diversos outros retornos que serão apresentados.

The heat of formation of scandium sesquioxide (Sc203) has not been measured previously, and existing values for gallium sesquioxide (Ga203) are subject to large uncertainties. As a consequence, thermodynamic calculations involving these oxides hare lacked scientific exactness. This paper reports newly determined values of the heats of formation of gallium and scandium sesquioxides at 298.15° K., by combustion calorimetry. The corresponding free energies of formation are derived from heat and entropy data.

Steel is a highly versatile material due to its low cost and good mechanical properties, but typically needs some or other form of corrosion protection due to its tendency to corrode when exposed to atmospheric conditions. In the case of organic coatings, the corrosion protection and functionality of the final product is critically dependent on the adhesion of the coating to the surface of the steel. In this work the effect of contaminants and the nature of the surface layers present on industrial steel products are investigated by means of paint adhesion tests, Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and X-ray Photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that the presence of sodium species on the surface is very detrimental to paint adhesion under wet conditions, while satisfactory adhesion may be obtained even in the presence of silicon and carbon residues. It was also found that the nature of the Fe-O layer, formed under wet conditions is labile and different from that formed in dry air, and that subtle changes in process conditions, such as changing the oxygen content of the quench water, may change the adhesion of paint to the surface of the steel. Lewis acid-base interactions are discussed as a mechanism that may determine the bonding between the steel and polymer coating.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the current literature on the use of calcium chloride and ligninsulfonates as dust suppressants with respect to potential adverse effects on health or the environment. Calcium chloride poses little internal hazard to man and animals, but toxicity to vegetation in and around the area of application should be expected. The effects, however, should be considerably less than those observed from using calcium chloride as a road deicer. Except for trout, ligninsulfonates seem to pose little direct systemic toxicity problems in aquatic organisms, animals and man or any problem with local vegetation. Because of a greater volume of information on its use and effects, calcium chloride is recommended over ligninsulfonates.

Energy efficiency is currently a significant area of interest due to the Eskom power situation, which led to severe power impacts to the PGM, and indeed whole SA primary industries, in early 2008. Anglo Platinum has focused on energy efficiency for a number of years, especially in the concentrator operational area. New comminution technologies have been aggressively developed, which have shown real metallurgical efficiency gains as well as significant energy efficiency and saving potential for Anglo Platinum?s total electrical consumption as the company expands into a growing PGM demand market. This paper illustrates this programme?s activities, potential and considerable achievements to date.

General recognition of the potential benefits of utilizing advanced technology has focussed public attention on the organisation of tertiary education. This has produced a situation where opportunities exist for significant changes to be implemented. The challenges to Mining education in this environment of change are analysed with respect to the setting of education objectives, the role of centres of education, course structures and student access to courses. The scope of the analysis includes formal courses for professional education and technical training, and programmes for continuing education and postgraduate research. Previous significant advances in mining technology illustrate the importance of encouraging the establishment of an extensive involvement with mining education. Education cannot be the sole responsibility of professional academic organizations; significant industry participation is essential. Methods of achieving this interaction are discussed. Major changes in techniques available for disseminating information provide a significant incentive to assess the relevance of existing course structures and restrictions on student access to courses. Establishment of a less rigidly progressive system of education is discussed with respect to the development of the full potential of computer based learning. This will expand the availability of mining education to include remote locations. The practical feasibility of such changes and recognition of the value of education as a commercial resource could also increase overseas involvement in Australian mining education. Benefits of such changes and problems that may develop if accreditation systems are not also changed to take account of new technology are outlined.

The mining industry continues to underpin the regional economy. Australia, benefiting from a weak currency, receives 27% of the total goods export value from non-energy mining lead by aluminium, iron ore, gold and nickel. Consolidation has eliminated CRA, Comalco, North, Savage, Acacia, Ashton, Great Central, Aberfoyle, Placer Pacific, Plutonic, Normandy and RGC leaving Rio Tinto, BHP-Billiton, WMC, MIM and, increasingly, the South African companies Anglo, Gold Fields and Harmony as dominant players. Exploration stagnates with expenditure dropping 40% in Australia and 80% in PNG from peak levels. Major new regional developments include Rio’s West Angles iron ore project, Newcrest’s Ridgeway gold-copper mine and Inco’s Goro nickel-cobalt project in New Caledonia.

"Metal-coated thermoplastic parts find more and more functional and aesthetic applications in the interior and exterior of cars. The vapor-deposited or electroplated coatings are usually composed of a plurality of nickel- and chromium-containing layers, which are applied to copper-containing carrier layers on the polymers. Previously, recycling processes are mainly focussed at the recovery or thermal utilization of the plastics. Targeted and selective recycling of the metallic coatings is usually not carried out. Together with several SME, BTU developed a process, in which a complete and separate recovery of all components in high purity is possible with biotechnological methods. The bioleaching is carried out with iron and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, especially Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. The copper-containing layers are dissolved in the solution; chromium- and nickel-containing particles are precipitated as solids. After the bioleaching, a mechanical separation of the individual metal-containing components and their separate workup are carried out. End-products are metallic copper, a nickel- and chromium-containing solid and the cleaned plastics. The bioleaching ensures a high purity of the end products. Through the use of bacteria, which are also found in nature, the process is environmentally friendly. Compared to chemical leaching using inorganic acids, considerably shorter leaching times can be achieved. In addition to the optimization of the leaching process, the R/D-project also includes the development and testing of the apparatus technology.INTRODUCTION The material complexity of many end-user products has increased in recent years, especially in the fields of electrical appliances, vehicle technology and medical technology. However, the demands on functionality, safety, comfort and energy efficiency still play a greater role in product design as factors such as sustainability and usability. For example, if a car still holds more than 70% of steel in the 1980s, a vehicle nowadays includes a larger proportion of a variety of difficultly separable plastics and composite materials, as well as complex metal composites. This relates in particular to composites made from such different materials as metals and plastics. The processing and recovery of the components of those complex material mixtures is difficult for recycling companies."

The Bureau of Mines investigated methods of refining iron-contaminated zinc to marketable quality and developed a laboratory-scale process in which aluminum, added as a refining agent, reacted with the iron, forming solid Fe2Al which floated to the surface of the melt. Solids were separated by both filtration and centrifugation, using a unique type of "dipping" centrifuge devised during the work. Typical zinc recovery was 95 percent, and iron content of the metal was lowered from 0.37 to 0.02 percent.

An inert-gas fusion technique was applied by the Bureau of Mines to the oxygen analysis of mixed-fluoride electrolytes used in electrowinning uranium and the rare-earth metals. Method development included: (1) Thermodynamic and experimental evaluation of the temperature required to quantitatively remove oxygen from a fluoride melt; (2) installation of a water and an acid trap to entrain the volatilized fluorides; (3) development of a suitable sample-preparation technique for the heterogeneous fluoride baths in which both pulverizing and pelletizing were necessary to achieve reproducible results; (4) comparison of platinum flux and dry crucible techniques, which showed that the use of platinum was not necessary. The accuracy of the method was evaluated by analyzing fluoride baths containing known amounts of oxygen added as the metal oxide. In the 0.05-to 0.5-percent range, the relative error was about ±5 percent.

Tensile tests were conducted on pure magnesium and on four commercial alloys over a variety of temperatures and strain rates. The high positive slope of the ductility vs testing temperature curves that is found over a short range of testing temperatures for these materaturerials was shown to result from the fact that the microstructure was not stable at these testing temperatures. Pure magnesium did not display a transition temperature, although its sub-room temperature ductility was low. This poor ductility resulted from a grain boundary weakness. The aluminum-bearing commercial magnesium alloys had a higher ductility than the pure magnesium. ness.Thealuminum-bearingcommercialThese alloys did exhibit a transition temperature and grain boundaries that were stronger than the grain material. Both pure magnesium and the commercial alloys began initiating cracks at strains equal to one half of their fracture strain. MAGNESIUM base alloys&apos; enormous potential as structural materials lies in their high strength to weight ratios. At present, the high strength magnesium base alloys such as AZ-80, which will be discussed later, have about as high a tensile strength to specific gravity ratio as the highest strength wrought aluminum alloy, 75s-T6, and, of course, a much higher strength to weight ratio than structural steel. Further, since the magnesium base alloys develop their high strength to weight ratios with moderate strengths and extremely light weights, the ratio of load carrying capacity to the weight of many structures is relatively higher for the magnesium base alloys than their strength to weight ratios would indicate. This results because judicious increases in section size, such as increasing the depth of bending members or adding reinforcing ribs, can frequently increase the weight of a structure linearly while the strength and stiffness increase as the second or third power of the added weight. Strength and rigidity must be designed into lightweight structures by those techniques which establish multiaxial stress states. Consequently, strong, lightweight structures frequently also possess a greater propensity toward brittle failures. In order to insure against these catastrophic failures, an extra premium must be placed on ductility and toughness in light alloys. Current knowledge of the ductility and toughness behaviors—notched behaviors—of magnesium base alloys is limited.* Most of the magnesium base alloys * The state of present knowledge regarding the effect of testing temperature on mechanical properties has recently been summar-ized by Pritchard.&apos; crystallize in the hexagonal system, so that they are expected to exhibit a tough and ductile to brittle transition temperature. Actually, a transition temperature behavior has been reported for commercially pure magnesium in the literature, but the characteristics of this transition temperatureh uggest that it may not be a transition in the usual meaning, but simply the onset of some thermal softening, a performance much like that which face-centered-cubic lead might exhibit slightly below room temperature. If transition temperatures do exist, such important questions as the manner in which they are affected by internal variables such as chemical composition and grain size, or the effect of external variables such as rate of straining or notch severity have never been investigated. The investigation reported upon herein was undertaken in order to define some of the mechanical behaviors of the magnesium base alloys better, to gain a better understanding of the influence of some of the above listed variables, and particularly to understand their effect on ductility and toughness better. The hafnium-vanadium phase diagram was constructed within an estimated accuracy of ± 10° C and ± 2 wt pct composition. Alloys for investigation were melted under an atmosphere of purified helium by nonconsumable tungsten-electrode arc melting on a water-cooled copper hearth. Melting points were determined by optical pyrometer, and the remaining phase relationships were investigated by metallography, thermal analysis, and X-ray diffraction. The existence of a face-centered cubic intermetallic compound HfV2 (a = 7.38 A) was confirmed. A eutectic reaction occurred at 20 wt pct vanadium and 1,395° C to yield HfV2 and 8 solid solution. HfV2 melted incongruently by a peritectic reaction at 1,480° C, and the 3 solid solution decomposed eutectoidally at 1,165° C and 6 wt pct vanadium to yield HfV2 and a solid solution. The eutectoid, the eutectic, and the peritectic isotherms extended from 1 to 36.3 wt pct vanadium, from 8 to 36.3 wt pct vanadium, and from 26 to 89.5 wt pct vanadium, respectively. Terminal solid solubilities of hafnium in vanadium at 1,300° C and of vanadium in hafnium at 1,100° C determined to be about 3 and 1 wt pct, respectively.

"Over the last decades, many authors have shown the importance of froth in the flotation process. Mineral recovery is related to froth recovery and flotation. Selectivity is affected by froth characteristics, especially structure and loading. The characteristics of froth textures could therefore be used for diagnosing flotation.Machine imaging, especially image texture analysis, allows on-line measurement of important froth characteristics and process state classification. The measured characteristics include froth texture, loading and stability indicators. To extract information from images, texture analysis tools are used as well as a block-matching algorithm (BMA). For process state classification, images are analyzed with the same tools and clustering is done with multivariate data analysis algorithms.Two case studies, Brunswick Mine Concentrator Cu/Pb circuit and LaRonde Mine Zn circuit, are presented to show that these indicators may be used for diagnosis and control. The influence of manipulated variables on measured froth features is shown as well as the relationship between froth characteristics, mineral recovery and flotation selectivity.INTRODUCTIONImaging is a way to depict abstract characteristics of a scene or an object; it is often related to other types of scientific observations, chemical component concentrations, for example (Geladi and Grahn, 1996). "A novel on-line visualization system, previously developed at Syncrude Canada Ltd., has been modified to characterize rising bubbles, particles and particle-bubble aggregates in a flotation process. With this system, the bubble size and rise velocity in a laboratory flotation cell can be determined. The technique allows the loading of solids on bubbles to be visualized, thereby providing an in-depth understanding of sub-processes of flotation. A step-by-step data processing procedure is presented. The applicability of the developed system to mineral flotation and bitumen extraction is discussed. Under batch flotation conditions in a laboratory Denver cell, three main bubble-particle attachment patterns are observed. They are: i) single particles attached to single bubbles, ii) particle aggregates loaded on single bubbles; and iii) a group of particles aggregated with a group of bubbles. The results demonstrate that the on-line visualization system is a powerful tool for understanding and diagnosing flotation processes.INTRODUCTIONAir (Gas) bubbles are an indispensable component in a flotation system. Both industrial practice and theoretical analysis indicate (Yoon, 1993; Diaz-penafiel and Dobby, 1994) that the size and population of bubbles are two important process parameters in modeling flotation. More recent investigations (Finch, et al., 1999; Gorain, et al., 1997) suggest that for a given flotation system, bubble surface area flux, defined as the air liquid interfacial area per unit time and unit cross-sectional area of flotation cell, showed a better correlation with the flotation rate constant. As a result, the bubble surface area flux is now being considered as a key parameter to account for the combined effect of bubble size and population in evaluating the performance of flotation machines and modeling flotation processes. However, the success of using bubble surface area flux in flotation process modeling largely depends on how accurate it can be determined or estimated (Finch, et al., 1999)."

"The Lady Loretta lead-zinc deposit in Northwest Queensland, Australia contains an average of 5.9% lead, 17.1% zinc and 97 g/t silver. Ore mineralization is mostly comprised of fairly complex intergrowths of pyrite, sphalerite and galena. Starting in 1998, Noranda Inc., the major joint venture partner of the project, conducted extensive metallurgical test work, which culminated in July - August 2000 in a series of Pilot Plant tests. A common thread to all the metallurgical work has been the deportment of a large portion of silver into non-payable metallurgical products. Average silver distribution from four Pilot Plants shows a distribution of silver in lead concentrate of 28%, whereas silver in zinc concentrate was 49%, and 23% in the final tails.The consistently poor silver recovery as well as the fairly unusual silver distribution, particularly in zinc concentrate, was considered an issue to be thoroughly investigated. A mineralogical plan was devised to determine if these particular metallurgical results were somewhat related to the nature and mode of occurrence of silver carriers. Work was performed to determine discrete silver-bearing minerals and/or silver contained in solid solution in a suite of commonly occurring sulphides. Ore microscopy, SEM methods, Electron Microprobe and Ion Microprobe analyses were all used to answer these questions, and to find the silver carriers, so a metallurgical plan could be devised to improve silver recovery.INTRODUCTIONPotential economic exploitation of the Lady Loretta deposit in Queensland, Australia is driven by revenue derived from zinc and lead flotation concentrates and co-product silver recovery in lead. Following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) expedited an effort to evaluate and retrofit important state-owned toll bridges to en­hance performance of the state&apos;s transportation systems during and after major (credible) earthquake events. Imbsen and Associates, Inc. (IAI) along with their sub-consultants, were awarded a contract to conduct seismic evaluation and to develop retrofit design for Benicia-Martinez Toll structure, to meet a "Serviceable" performance requirement after the event of a "Safety Evaluation Earthquake." This paper describes the design and construction specifications for the deep foundations supporting the main spans of the Benicia-Martinez Bridge. Benicia-Martinez Toll Structure (George Miller Bridge), a high-level deck-type welded truss bridge with welded girder approach spans, carries Interstate Route I-680 over the easterly end of Carquinez Strait near San Francisco, CA. The nearly 5000 ft long main truss structure consists of ten spans, ranging from 330&apos; to 528&apos; in length, supported on cellular reinforced con­crete pier structures. Foundation systems across the waterway, consist of cellular reinforced concrete footings, supported by groups of 6&apos; diameter, concrete filled, steel caissons, resting on 5&apos; deep rock sockets, at depths of 50&apos; to 150&apos; below the water level. Seismic evaluation of the existing foundation systems accounted for spatially varying ground motion along the length of the structure, variability of foundation material strength (i.e. at bed-rock), variation and effects of scour depth on the performance of the foundations, and dy­namic soil-structure interaction. Performance of caissons beyond their elastic strength, as well as their effects on the behavior of the foundations and substructures were evaluated and considered in establishing foundation vulnerabilities. Several retrofit strategies were considered leading to a final retrofit strategy to strengthen end connections of existing caissons, as well addition of new caissons to provide adequate lateral force resistance for the foundations. Final design package includes specifications as well as construction methods and requirements for existing and new caissons, under traffic, and pile load testing procedures for design loads of up to 12500 kips per caisson.
