Electrochemical processing using molten electrolytes is undergoing a considerable renaissance due to several innovative ideas being explored both in the laboratory and also at the pilot scale. Several of these new ideas are related to developments in energy generation and storage and involve solid electrolytes. Sodium has been prepared by the electrolysis of sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide with the transfer of sodium ions through a sodium beta" alumina membrane and magnesium oxide dissociated by the removal of the oxygen through a stabilized zirconiaelectrolyte incorporating a fuel cell electrode. By using halides with highly electropositive cations, such as molten calcium chloride, it has been found that the favoured cathodic reaction, when oxygen is present, is the ionization of oxygen and not the deposition of calcium. This approach has been applied to the reduction of many metal oxides including titanium, zirconium, niobium and rare earth oxides and, by using a mixture of oxides as the cathode, homogeneous alloys are produced. This concept can also be applied to deoxidation of solid and liquid metals. Refining of metals is possible using intercalation compounds and, in a completely different application, it has-been found that, by intercalating alkali metals by electrolysis of alkali halides into graphite, it is possible to produce carbon nanotubes and nanoparticles. The technological opportunities of these various concepts will be discussed.

Due to high concentration of NaOH in the digested slurry after scheelite digestion, it is diluted to about 4N before filtration to separate sodium tungstate solution from the sludge (residue). However, in practice there may be deviations in the normality of NaOH present in the slurry. There may also be variations in the temperature of the slurry and filtration time. Slight variations in these parameters could cause tungsten losses in the sludge via the back reaction: Ca(OH)2 + Na2WO4? CaWO4 + 2NaOH This paper pertains to the effect of normality, temperature and time on the tungsten losses in the sludge that is separated from ?diluted-scheelite-slurry-in-NaOH? via filtration. Results indicated that tungsten losses in the filtered residue (sludge) were quite significant when the slurry temperature was kept at 70°C or higher. The effect of high temperature was less significant at the slurry normality of 3.6 or higher. Combination of low slurry normality (<3.6) and high temperature (>60°C) resulted into large W-losses in the sludge.

"SynopsisThe need to reduce weight while maintaining good mechanical properties in materials used in the automotive industry has over the years seen an increased exploitation of various steels to meet this new demand. In line with this development, the ferritic stainless steel family has seen a wide application in this industry, with the AISI 436 type increasingly being used for automotive trims and mufflers for exhaust systems, as well as a significant part of this steel’s application being for the manufacture of wheel nuts and wheel nut caps in trucks, mainly through the deep drawing process. However, there have been reports of some poor surface roughening of this material during deep drawing, with tearing and/or cracking also reported in some instances. This has been suspected to possibly be associated with some local differences in localized mechanical properties between grains and grain clusters of the rolled and annealed material.In order to investigate the poor surface roughness exhibited by AISI 436 ferritic stainless steel (FSS) during deep-drawing, Lankford values (R-mean and ?r), grain size, and microtextures of various sheet samples from this steel were studied. The chemical composition range for the samples was 0.013–0.017% C, 17–17.4% Cr, 0.9–1% Mo, and 0.4–0.5% Nb. The steels were subjected to various hot and cold rolling processing routes i.e. involving industrial direct rolling (DR) or intermediate annealing rolling (IR), and the drawability and final surface qualities of the steels were compared. It was found that the DR route gave an average R-mean and ?r value of 1.9 and -1.4 respectively, while the IR route yielded an average Rmean and ?r value of 1.6 and 0.52 respectively. The high ?r value for the DR processing route had a substantial adverse effect on the drawability. IR samples exhibited a smoother surface finish on visual inspection, while clear flow lines were visible on the DR samples, despite the fact that DR is the preferred industrial processing route due to the reduced production costs it offers. This observation was also confirmed through SEM examinations. The difference in the surface quality was attributed to microtexture. However, the mechanism responsible for this difference still needs to be identified."

A hydrogeologic characterization and impact analysis was performed for a proposed quarry at the Hitch Rack Ranch located in the Little Turkey Creek watershed southwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Continuous multiple channel tubing, nested piezometers, stream flow measurements, and mapping of known seeps were used to define the three-dimensional potentiometric distribution and areas of groundwater recharge and discharge. Water balance considerations, mass balance calculations, and potentiometric response to earth tides and barometric fluctuations confirmed that the granite fracture system in the ridge area of the proposed quarry has an extremely low bulk hydraulic conductivity resulting in minimal groundwater discharge to sustain the baseflow of Little Turkey Creek. The Little Turkey Creek valley forms the major conduit for groundwater flow exiting from the upper part of watershed underlain by granite. This conclusion has significant implications with respect to mine planning to minimize projected impacts to the hydrologic system and preserve this recharge component to downgradient Denver Basin sedimentary deposits.

Mine planning and scheduling is based on using a geological model for the deposit. Blocks are used to discretize the deposit into mineable volumes where grade values are assigned. Traditional estimation techniques such as kriging or inverse distance weighting are frequently used for this task where an interpolated value is calculated within a discrete volume. This group of block grades is the input for sequence optimizers, which base their decision on the economical value of a given block. Ultimately, the economical value of a block depends on its grade, making mine sequencing sensitive to all estimated values. If one looks to a block not as a single grade but as a set of equally possible grades, its economical value will change as different grades can be assigned to it. Stochastic simulation is known to provide the tools to assess grade variability, which makes it possible to generate equally probable values in a block. Different grade block models can thus be built and multiple sequencing alternatives are observed by running the optimizer for these distinct inputs. The results demonstrate that the methodology is adequate for risk assessment and proves to be useful for mining project sensitivity analyses. Differences in the project net present value showed that there is little difference between the two simulation methodologies (sequential Gaussian simulation and sequential indicator simulation) applied. Concern exists about the potential release of metals from the proposed mining operation at Martha Hill to the Ohinemuri River. Speculation on possible impacts is fuelled by the dearth of published data on existing metal levels not only for this river system but for streams throughout the Coromandel. At first sight this lack of data is surprising given the apparent interest in this subject and the fact that future mining activity in this region has been a possibility since at least 1979. That such a situation has arisen is not altogether unexpected given the difficulties faced by various organisations, including the mining industry, in determining metal levels which are generally acknowledged to be low. This paper presents data for a number of stations in the vicinity of the proposed operation; it explains the analytical procedures which were adopted and the rationale for them and relates the information which has been obtained to water quality criteria.

The electrowinning (EW) circuit involves using DC current in the electro-deposition of metal ions dissolved in an electrolyte solution. This paper reviews a method to generate an electrical model of an EW circuit and the resulting DC current flow and voltage distribution within the circuit. Topics include: calculations of electrolyte conductivity and the equivalent electrical resistance of the electrolyte within the electrolyte pipelines connected to the EW circuit; the breakdown and classification of the EW cell voltage into thermodynamic and ohmic potentials; methods to calculate current flow and voltage distribution throughout the EW circuit; and the development of an interactive visual computer model to simulate an actual EW circuit. Stray current can pose an electrical shock hazard to employees in electrolytic tankhouses. Increased awareness and understanding of the voltage distribution and potential stray current in an EW circuit can help mitigate the risk of tankhouse workers becoming exposed to electrical shock hazards. INTRODUCTION Copper electrowinning tankhouses include rectifiers that deliver large amount of DC current to a series of electrolytic cells consisting of electrolyte solution and electrode pairs. The design also includes metallic conductors in the circuit which include the rectifier’s positive and negative busbar, inter-cell busbar, and the anode and cathode frames. The electrolyte acts as an electrical conductor that transfers current via ions between the anodic and cathodic electrodes within the cell. Electrolyte, as a conductor, is also capable of conducting DC current outside the main EW circuit through the connected electrolyte feed and return pipe systems. DC current that follows a path other than the intended path through the series of electrolytic cells is referred to as “stray current”. Developing an electrical model enhances understanding of voltage distribution and current flow in an EW circuit. This paper discusses the derivation of the various representative components of the model as well as the output from the model. An interactive visual computer simulation incorporates the model output in order to aid in the understanding of voltage distribution and current flow throughout the EW circuit.

The objective of this paper is to study the effect of annulus thickness on the quality of resin mixture for fully grouted resin bolt. Pullout and mixture tests were made in underground coal mines for the following arrangements: (a) borehole diameter 1.14 in. (29 mm), and roof bolt diameter 0.75 in. (19 mm) with steel wire around the roof bolt; (b) borehole diameter 1.14 in. (29 mm), and roof bolt diameter 0.75 in. (19 mm) with no wire around the roof bolt; and (c) borehole diameter 0.95 in. (24 mm) and a roof bolt diameter 0.75 in. (19 mm) with no wire around the roof bolt. The mixture test in steel pipe showed that the best resin mixture is for borehole with 0.95 in. (24 mm). The arrangement (b) produced big voids around the bolt. But for the 0.95 in. (24 mm) hole, arrangement c, the mixture was the best. It was corroborated with the pullout tests results where there is a difference in grout stiffness: the 0.95 in. (24 mm) borehole is about 10 times higher than a borehole with diameter 1.14 in. (29 mm). On the other hand, for the cohesive strength the difference is not significant. Numerical models were built to simulate the pullout tests, and also to simulate the roof support at an intersection. Convergence at two underground intersections, consisting of an immediate roof with laminated sandstone, was monitored to evaluate the performance of the roof supports, using the 1.14 and 0.95 in. (29 and 24 mm) diameter boreholes (i.e. arrangements ?a? and ?b?). The convergence readings showed that the 0.95 in. (24 mm) borehole diameter resulted in a smaller, although it was not significantly different.

Currently in Canada there are 15 major mining companies with a minimum of $1 billion in market capitalization or net private value. This group forms the core of an important sector for Canada. The mining sector had gross revenues of about $35 billion in 1988. This compares to a Canadian GDP of $410 billion in 1988. There are at least three different sub-groups within the mining group, each facing the future with very different prospects for the coming years.

Two of the most important issues mines have to deal with are tracking the ore mined from pit to plant and to test the efficiency of beneficiation equipment. Kumba Resources and Saco Systems are working together at moment to develop a RFID tracer system to help address these issues. This paper will focus on the tracking of ore from pit to plant. The main advantages for ore tracking is to ensure plant feed blending and dilution according to plan. The RFID tracer system works on the basis of a tracer that physically simulates the ore properties and radio frequency technology that facilitates communication with the tracer and allowing information to be stored on the tracer. This paper tends to indicate the progress on the application of RFID tracer technology in the minerals processing environment as tested at Kumba Resources so far. Effective control of respirable dust is one of the most serious problems associated with longwall mining in the United States. This report describes the development and the underground evaluation of ventilated cutting drums, on a double ended ranging drum shearer. The ventilated drum uses high pressure (1,500 psi) water sprays to draw air (3,500 cfm) through 12 airmoving tubes mounted in the drum hub. The sprays draw dusty air from the face side of the drum, scrub the air, and discharge the clean air on the gob side of the drum against a deflector plate. During a three week underground evaluation, the cutting drums reduced shearer generated dust levels at the shearer operators position by 40%, at the shield operators downwind of the shearer by 55%, and at the tailgate by 55%. Cutting and loading performance of the drums were superior to the mine?s conventional drums. After the evaluation, the mine continued to use the ventilated drums to finish mining the panel. During this 3 month period, there were no mechanical or seal failures demonstrating excellent system reliability.

JW Aluminum use lean and Six Sigma techniques to continuously improve their target of reliable, repeatable and reproducible (3R) manufacturing. Six Sigma’s second stage gate, known as "Measure" involves identification and qualifying appropriate measuring systems. Metal quality (inclusions) are known in the industry to be an important element in 3R casting. The measurement of inclusions at JW Aluminum historically depended on outside vendors. In order to establish real time inclusion measurement ability within JW Aluminum, inclusion measurement systems in the marketplace were investigated. The qualification of a MetalVision MV20/20 ultrasonic inclusion analyzer are discussed as well as the subsequent application of the system in melting and casting improvement projects.

Keywords: Laminate Composites; Mechanical Behavior; Damage Evolution The mechanical performance of Ti-6-4-Al3Ti metal-intermetallic laminate (MIL) composites synthesized by a reactive foil sintering technique was evaluated. Crack morphology of untested Ti-6-4-Al3Ti MIL composites has been characterized by optical microscopy. Mechanical tests were performed on Ti-Al3Ti metal-intermetallic laminate (MIL) composites and pure Al3Ti, and the principal mechanisms of damage initiation and accumulation were identified experimentally. The elastic properties and anisotropy of the laminates were calculated and successfully compared with Resonant Ultrasonic Spectroscopy (RUS) measurements. The effect of residual stress on the fracture toughness of the Ti-6-4-Al3Ti MIL composites was analyzed.

IT HAS been known for centuries that iron and steel could be hardened by cold hammering and that the metal could be restored to the normal condition by heating to a red heat and cooling either rapidly or slowly with nearly pure iron and slowly with steels containing considerable carbon. The art of tempering steels is also very old. When a medium- or high-carbon steel is quenched from a cherry-red heat, the hardness is increased; this hardness can be reduced by heating to various temperatures below the lower thermal critical point, which is near 700° C. The present paper will not consider these old and well-known changes in iron and steel below the thermal critical range but will confine itself to the more unusual changes, some of which have been studied recently. Stromeyer,1 for example, in 1886, reports that both working steel and heat treatment of steel in the blue-heat range are highly injurious. Recently, however, some metallurgists believe that the straightening of warped steel forgings at a blue heat produces a beneficial effect on the metal.2 The Engineering Division of the National Research Council has constituted a committee on Physical Changes -in Iron and Steel Below the Thermal Critical Range, which has the following personnel: R. Particles of a complex nickel sulphide concentrate (containing pyrite, pyrrhotite, pentIandite, and violarite as the major mineralogical constituents) were entrained in a stream of hot gas the temperature of which was varied from 500 to -1000&#176;C. Chemical analysis of the particulates collected from the furnace was used to detect the rapid change in sulphur content which accompanied the ignition temperature jump. X-ray diffraction analysis was used to characterize the oxidized material.These techniques showed that ignition was dependent on the mineralogical composition and occurred over the temperature range 500-900&#176;C. Pyrite ignited first in the range 500-600&#176;C; pyrrhotite was the least reactivemineral and required temperatures in excess of 800&#176;C for ignition. The nickel minerals &lt;pentIandite and violarite decomposed before ignition and ignited at temperatures intermediate to those required for the pyrite and pyrrhotite. The ignition temperature for the pyrite was found to be independent of particle size and concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere.Ignition temperatures determined by the simulated flash smelting method were compared with the results of differential thermal analysis (DTA) measurements performed on the same concentrate. Temperaturesdetermined in the DTA test as corresponding to the start of exothermic activity were shown to be at least 100&#176;C below those determined by the simulation test.

A 24,300 tonnes per year state of the art Silicon smelter is being constructed for Barrack Silicon Pty Ltd at Kemerton, 20 kilometres north of the City of Bunbury in Western Australia. The plant is designed for the reduction of high purity quartzite lump to metallic silicon in two 27MVa Demag submerged arc electric furnaces. The primary reductant, a high purity charcoal, will be manufactured at the plant from locally sourced jarrah wood waste (Eucalyptus Marginata). A series of 15, stations beginning with Potsdam and Budapest and ending with Budapest and Potsdam were occupied inn the period August, 1908, to January, 1909. The intermediate stations were all at points which had been connected by Baron Eötvös with torsion-balance traverses. The observations were made with an invariable pendulum of the standard four-pendulum type of instrument of the Geodetic Institute, made by Stückrath at Berlin-Friedenau. The observations at each of the field stations lasted-one to three days with one exception; two or three time determinations were made; four to eight series of pendulum observations were made; the error of determination of the elevation of the instrument above mean sea level ranged from 0.30 meter to 1.10 meters, with the exception of the Arad and Baja stations, where the elevation was known more accurately and averaged about ± 0.8 m, which would cause an error of ± 0.25 x 10-3 dynes. No topographic correction was applied. The values for ?g were taken from Eötvös: Report on Geodetic Observations in Hungary, especially Observations with the Torsion Balance, Budapest, 1910. The differences in ?g as determined, by the torsion balance and by the unvariable pendulum were: Kuvin-Hidegkut 1.2 km. 0.001, Livada-Kuvin 9 km. 0.001, Pankota-Livada 13 km. 0.004, Kuvin-Arad 20 km. 0.000, Pankota-Arad via Kuvin 42 42 km.0.005, Pankota- Arad via Kurtics 50 km.0.000 dynes. Oltay concludes that if the stations are close enough together and if the terrane is rather flat, the measurement of ?g with the Eötvös torsion balance is as accurate as with the invariable pendulum. -- Donald C. As the popularity of precast concrete segmental linings for tunnels is growing in North America, some problems related to grouting of, and near, these linings are starting to appear. The installation of a segmental lining behind a TBM requires that the annular space around the lining be quickly filled with grout to prevent collapse of the ground. In practice, the filling of the annulus is frequently delayed and takes place a distance behind the machine typically via grout ports centrally located in the segments. If partial collapse of the annulus has occurred, it may become necessary to use higher grouting pressures in an attempt to distribute the grout. There have been several occasions where these increased pressures have caused damage to the tunnel linings. Similarly, compaction grouting adjacent to a tunnel lining can cause damage. This paper quantifies the effects of such grouting on a typical precast lining.

Campbell, D. J. Couperthwaite, R. Cross, A. H. Edwards, C. G. J. Vermeulen and G. J. C. Young. Two Graduates: Messrs. J. McLuskie and M. H. Smith. Six Associates: Messrs. J. Dean, W. F. de Lange, J. S. Freer, A. Hooper, A. Paschalides and L. Vorster. One Student: Mr D. J. Hammond and nine visitors, a total attendance of thirty-two. Minutes As the minutes of the General Meeting held on the 17th November, 1970 had not yet been published in the Journal, the Chairman moved that the adoption and discussion thereof be deferred to the next General Meeting. This motion was adopted unanimously. Office-bearers The Chairman informed the meeting that this branch had received the resignation of Mr J. N. Saunders. The presentation of this talk, illustrated by sketches, proved very interesting and entertaining and was received with applause from all present. Mr I. Thomas proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Freer on behalf of all members of the O.F.S. Branch. After thanking Mr Freer for his talk and all present for their attendance, the Chairman declared the meeting closed at 9.30 p.m.
