In view of the large number of wells directionally drilled from offshore platforms and urban drillsites, greater interest is being focused on the directional survey and on the uncertainty inherent in calculating the position of the bottom of the hole, or other benchmarks in the wellbore. Of the two methods presented here for evaluating this uncertainty, the first is analytical and uses the principles of probability and statistics. The second method uses Monte Carlo simulation to generate a pattern of the scatter of possible bottom-hole locations. Both methods are based on a model for which the usual assumption is made that the curvilinear axis of the wellbore is adequately represented by a large number, M, of linear segments joined end to end from the top to the bottom of the hole and closely following the course of the hole. The errors due to this approximation are assumed to be negligible and are not studied here. One form of the model is to consider that for a given hole there exists a perfect set of data describing it, of the above form. Each linear segment has an angle of inclination with the vertical 7, in radians, an azimuthal angle from true north xi in radians, and a length Si, in feet. The subscript variable, i, extends from 1 to M. Each of the M linear segments representing the axis of the wellbore has three components in the X, Y, and Z directions. These components are calculated from the equations: The bottom-hole coordinates as determined from the reference set of data for the wellbore are given by the following for i = 1 to M: X=SX, Y = Sy, Z=SZ; . (2) A directional survey instrument, lowered into the wellbore to the M segments, or stations, measures the values of the 7; and the 3,. In general, because of errors from various sources, the resulting angular measurements will not be precisely equal to the 7" and xi. Random variables l, and Ai are therefore considered with associated probability density functions fi(li) and gi(Ai), respectively, which represent the distributions of potential survey measurements for this hole. Since it is assumed that the values Si are accurately measured they are treated deterministically. MANY methods for the determination of gold or silver, or both, in cyanide solutions have been published, which with care in manipulation, and modification in some cases, will give results that are satisfactory. It is possible to classify or group these methods as follows: 1. Evaporating the solution in a porcelain or agate-ware dish containing litharge,1 or in a "boat" made of lead foil. 2. Forming a lead sponge containing the precious metals by means of zinc shavings,2 zinc dust,3 or a piece of aluminum.4 3. Decomposing the cyanide solution with an acid and precipitating the precious metals by the use of one or a combination of some of the following: Copper sulphate,5 sodium sulphite,6 hydrogen sulphide,7 cement copper.8 4. Precipitating the silver by zinc dust held in a Hooch crucible and determination with a standard solution of sulphocyanate.9 5. Electrolysis.10 6. Colorimetry.11

A series of flotation experiments were carried out in a 2.25-dm3 laboratory-scale Rushton turbine cell using hydrophobic quartz particles. Flotation was performed at a constant mean bubble diameter over a range of superficial gas velocities and impeller rotational speeds. The overall flotation rate constant increased linearly with increasing superficial gas velocity (and hence bubble surface area flux). The rate constant also increased linearly with increasing energy dissipation, until a maximum value was reached. A further increase in energy dissipation had little effect on the rate constant. The dependency of the rate constant on energy dissipation is a reflection of the size range and hydrophobicity of the particles used in this study. The flotation rate constant increased with increasing particle size, except at the highest energy dissipation value examined, for which the flotation rate of the larger particles reached a plateau and, in some cases, decreased. Good agreement was obtained between the experimental results and those predicted by a fundamental flotation model using experimentally measured values for mean energy dissipation and the Sauter mean bubble diameter. The bubble velocity was adjusted to obtain the best fit to the experimental data. The inferred bubble velocity, based on the flotation model, was found to increase with increasing superficial gas velocity (and bubble surface area flux) and was found to decrease with increasing impeller rotational speed. While the inferred bubble velocities were significantly lower than experimentally measured bubble velocities, and, except at low superficial gas velocity values, significantly higher than the bubble swarm velocity calculated from gas holdup measurements, similar trends with impeller rotational speed and superficial gas velocity were observed in all cases.

SUMMARY A review is presented of the state of development of high pressure water jet equipment and of large impact hammers for rock tunneling. Information from the U.S.S.R. is based on published literature and three personal visits. Applicable papers which were presented at the International Symposium on Jet Cutting Technology in Coventry, England in April 1972 are reviewed. Data are presented on continuous jet systems, pulsed water cannons, and hydraulic-powered impact hammers with respect to the specific energy of rock breakage and potential application in tunneling machines. INTRODUCTION It has been estimated that the cost of underground excavation during the period 1970-1979 in 15 countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development will be over $54 billion, an increase of 104% over the period 1960-1969. It is expected that 55% of the tunneling construction will occur in hard rock (Ref. 1). Present tunneling machines are generally limited to soft and medium-hard rock. When used in hard rock, the cost of replacing mechanical cutter bits is high. "This paper documents the characteristics of the different quartz veins, and their relation to gold, in the turbiditic Meguma domain of eastern Nova Scotia. Eleven different types have been distinguished in the greenschist facies on the basis of form, internal structure, mineralogy, wallrock alteration and crosscutting relationships to each other and to regional structures. Gold is present as rare visible disseminations in host rock slates and in ore-grade, early-formed veins, that pre-date the formation of upright Acadian folds and intrusions of Devonian granitoids. Four vein types pre-date Acadian folding. Five gold-deficient vein types are associated with Acadian folding (syndeformation); whereas two gold-deficient vein types clearly post-date this deformational event: Previously unreported, wall rock alteration is associated with early crosscutting and semiconcordant auriferous veins. In contrast, early stratiform veins are devoid of wallrock alteration. It is suggested that the auriferous vein arrays formed as submarine exhalitive systems over synsedimentary tensional faults and that the Meguma domain may represent the opening of a basin similar to the modernGuaymas rift .IntroductionThe term ""turbidite-hosted gold deposits"" is introduced to distinguish gold deposits contained within a turbiditic sequence of wackes and shales (or their metamorphosed equivalents) from gold deposits in other types of sediments. Usage and justification for the term is similar to ""carbonate-hosted lead-zinc deposits"" or ""volcanogenic massive sulphides"". A range of different characteristics can be present in individual deposits, some of which may be indicative of specific deposit types in the same manner that volcanogenic massive sulphides can be subdivided into ""Cyprus type"", ""Kuroko type"", ""Besshi type"", etc. Historically, gold deposits hosted by turbiditic flysch were an important class of quartz-vein gold mines in the 19th century. They included the goldfields of Victoria, Australia, Otago, New Zealand and Nova Scotia, Canada. Production from most of these fields had ceased by World War II and interest in this type of deposit waned. However, the recent exploration interest in gold has resulted in both re-assessment of the classical mining camps and the discovery that ""turbidite-hosted"" gold deposits are present in many parts of the world.Mapping of the regional geology and gold deposits of the Megumadomain of Nova Scotia was carried out by E.R. Faribault of the Geological Survey of Canada between 1886 and 1939. Faribault produced a comprehensive series of maps and reports for each gold district, a compendium of which was published by Malcolm (1929)."

DEFORMATION lines, also called etch markings or strain markings, are noneffaceable lines developed in individual grains by etching a metal specimen which has been cold worked sufficiently to cause atomic non-conformity or slight orientation differences within the grains. Etching occurs more rapidly at these lines of high chemical reactivity to produce a result similar to that revealing grain boundaries.1 Wider etching effects forming bands have been found. They are believed to be bands of deformation lines which form areas of measurably different orientation from the crystal matrix. The crystallite rotations causing these bands have been shown by Barrette to contribute to deformation textures. Although deformation lines have been observed in many metals, the amount of deformation required for their appearance has been established only in general terms. Mathewson and Phillips3 observed the first appearance of deformation lines in cold-rolled alpha brass at about 20 pct reduction in thickness using the standard ammonium hydroxide hydrogen peroxide etchant. Price and Davidson4 noted deformation lines in common high brass after 26.5 pct reduction by cold rolling using the same etchant. Johnson' observed dark thick forklike lines in 99.99 pct pure copper reduced 31.8 pct. Adcock6 observed deformation lines in 80-20 copper-nickel alloy rolled 50 pct. Samans7 found no deformation lines in alpha brass single crystals cold rolled 9.5 pct but they did appear after 25 pct reduction using ammonium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide etchant. Barrett and Levenson8 observed deformation bands in drawn polycrystalline iron at very small reductions in area and noted that their initial appearance perhaps depends on grain size and other conditions. They reported deformation bands in a single crystal of iron reduced 6 pct by drawing. Brick9 noted that deformation lines in 70-30 brass apparently associated with {111} planes appeared after reductions of from 20-50 pct by cold rolling. Brick and Williamson10 noted that in single crystals of 70-30 alpha brass "as in polycrystalline brass, no deformation markings appeared until reductions exceeded 20 pct." Cook and Richards11 reported that in copper cold rolled less than about 50 pct few strain markings were apparent but for higher. reductions many strain markings appeared transverse to the rolled direction. The gold that is not recovered by a particular process is refractory to that process. A study to determine how the refractory gold is associated in the ore constituents usually indicates the needed improvement in the process or additional methods for bettering recovery. In preliminary work, segregation of the various minerals, gangue or impurities, and data showing the reactions of each in the recovery method readily confines the refractory gold to a certain part on which extensive research can be directed. In this dissecting plan, the microscope is an important aid in locating the refractory gold but should be supplemented by chemical tests.

Water use and wastewater management is becoming a focus for many industries around Australia and the rest of the world. Good quality water is increasingly being recognised as a precious resource, and regulations on the bulk storage and discharge of waste streams is becoming more stringent in order to protect the environment, existing water reserves and the communities that use these resources. Components such as heavy metals, arsenic, cyanide, and sulfate from acid mine drainage are some that occur at mining and metallurgical processing sites. Removal of such components can allow safe re-use of these streams, reducing the new water requirements of the process, or else allowing acceptable discharge to the environment. Re-use or discharge of treated water eliminates or reduces the risk associated with storage of large volumes of contaminated water on site.Technologies where a contaminant is selectively precipitated and removed as a sludge are used for many of these treatments. Selection of the best treatment option for wastewater must depend on what is suitable to each site, and consider not only the nature of the contaminant, but also other aspects, including the location and situation of the site, local regulations, cost of reagents, the sensitivity of the local environment and waste sludge disposal options. To outline how an effective and economical solution can be designed and delivered, this paper will present a case study for the removal of arsenic from a site wastewater, from assessment of the problem, selection of suitable technology, design and implementation, to the benefits delivered to the site.CITATION:Salokannel, A, Nevatalo, L M, Martikainen, M, van der Meer, T and McCulloch, J, 2013. This bibliography is the first report of a Bureau of Mines research project on thermoelectric materials. Interest in such research has increased because of recent success in the design of commercial products, including generators and refrigerators, using the principles of thermoelectricity. This success made possible by the discovery of semiconductors that have much higher [effincies] than the metals and alloys formerly studied. Thermoelectricity is a term that includes a large number of phenomena relating heat to electrical energy. However, the moat important applications arise from two effects discovered by Seebeck in 1822 and by Peltier in 1834. When pieces of two unlike materials are joined at their two ends to form a continuous circuit, both of these effects may be observed. If the two junctions are maintained at different temperatures, an electromotive force known as the Seebeck voltage is generated. If, on the other hand, a current is made to flow through the circuit, the junctions of the materials will be found to differ in temperature. This phenomenon is called the Peltier effect.

This report describes Koppelman's work to develop the K-Fuel® Series C Process used to dry and stabilize Powder River Basin coal. It also contains summaries of the results of bench-scale and pilot plant tests conducted to prove the Series C Process. The process is being used by the KFx-Thermo Ecotek partnership for a 500,000 ton per year commercial plant that has been constructed near Gillette, Wyoming. The plant is presently undergoing shakedown.

The Bureau of Mines, as part of its designated duty of investigating the causes of mine accidents, is conducting at its experiment station in Pittsburgh, Pa., a study of mine gases. Some of the work already done in connection with this study is outlined below. A large number of mine-gas samples have been collected under normal conditions in returns and in splits, and at other points in the ventilating current, also at the face, in the goave or gob, in unventilated places, and wherever the air was still. Samples have also been obtained under abnormal conditions, as after explosions and while mine fires were in progress, or from sealed areas behind stoppings and darns where the air had been stagnant for some time. Chemical changes in the composition of mine atmospheres during mine fires have been studied," and conditions peculiar to certain mines have been investigated. The question of the effect of a change in atmospheric pressure on the escape of gas (methane) in coal mines has been studied. Explosives have been fired in both coal and metal mines, and samples of resulting gases have been collected to ascertain the degree to which these gases vitiate the air. A series of samples in mines where gasoline locomotives were being used have been examined in order to ascertain the degree to which the exhaust gases from such locomotives foul the mine air. Experiments have also been performed in regard to the relative effect of carbon monoxide b upon men and small animals. A preliminary report relating to the inflammable gases in mine air has been published. Full reports of the results of the investigations outlined above will be published as soon as all the necessary data have been gathered. The first part of this report deals with the methods used by the bureau in the collection and examination of the various mine gases; the latter part discusses the bureau's methods of sampling and examining natural gas.

At the beginning of the 20th century, barite was a mineral of minor importance in the United States. Its primary use was to extend lead oxide in white paint. Barite also added the special qualities of hiding power and flatness to paint. Because white lead sometimes turns black or yellow and barite does not, ground barite became a pigment on its own merit. Barium chloride was added to bricks before fi ring to stop efflorescence when exposed to weather. Barium carbonate or nitrate added luster and brilliance to glass. Barium chemicals were added to refining sugar, enameling iron, making oilcloths and paper collars, and in the manufacture of paper, artificial ivory, rubber and lithopone. Lithopone became a major paint ingredient in the 1920s; its use lasted until the 1950s, peaking at 150 kt (165,000 st) of barite in 1937 and 1947 for the manufacture of lithopone. Later in the 20th century, titanium dioxide replaced lead oxide, barite and zinc oxide in the coatings industry. In the 21st century, barite is used as a filler, extender or weighting agent in products such as paints, plastics and rubber. Some specific uses include its use in brake and clutch pads for automobiles, automobile paint primer for metal protection and gloss, to add weight to rubber mud flaps on trucks and to add weight to the cement jacket around petroleum pipelines under water. In the metals casting industry, barite is part of mold release compounds. Because barite significantly blocks X-ray and gamma ray emissions, it is used as aggregate in high density concrete for radiation shielding around X-ray units in hospitals, nuclear power plants and university nuclear research facilities. Ultra-pure barite consumed as liquid is used as a contrast medium in medical X-ray examinations. Barite is the raw material for barium chemicals, such as barium carbonate, which is an ingredient in faceplate glass in the cathode-ray tubes of televisions and computer monitors. In the 21st century, barite industrial uses accounts for an estimated 78 kt/a (86,000 stpy) in the United States.

In this work the formation and environmental stabilization potential of arsenate-containing fluoroapatites is considered. In particular in this research various compounds were precipitated from synthetic solutions containing fluoride, arsenate/phosphate and calcium by varying different parameters-temperature, Ca:As ratio, pH, and P:As ratio, and aging time. The results obtained helped determine the operating window that should be used for the formation of highly crystalline fluoroapatites, in particular svabite (Ca5(AsO4)3F). It was found that svabite has a specific pH range of precipitation, with lower pH yielding CaF2 and calcium arsenate compounds such as CaHAsO4•H2O. At higher pH, a mixture of svabite and johnbaumite (Ca5(AsO4)3OH) precipitated, yielding a less stable material. This range of precipitation varied with the concentration of arsenic in the starting solution, and widened with higher initial concentrations of Ca2+, AsO4 3- and F-. Furthermore, svabite/fluoroapatite solid solutions were formed by using the same procedure as svabite but replacing some of the arsenate in solution by phosphate. The increase in phosphate content yielded a gradual change in morphology and crystallinity. Work on stability evaluation is currently under way.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) has been classified as a carcinogen to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. As a result of its potential carcinogenic nature, DPM exposure is regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Currently, diesel emissions in the workplace are monitored by collecting the aerosol onto filters, which are then sent to a laboratory for thermal-optical analysis using the NIOSH method 5040. This process can take days or even weeks, and workers can potentially be exposed to excessive levels of DPM before the problem is identified. Moreover, the delay involved in getting the loaded filter to the lab inevitably means the loss of some of the more volatile organic carbon. To remedy this delay, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are seeking to develop a field-portable, real-time method for measuring elemental and organic carbons in DPM aerosols. In the current study, the use of mid-infrared spectrometry was investigated. It is believed that mid-infrared spectroscopy is more suitable for use in a real-time field-portable device than thermo-optical analysis methods. This article presents a method for measuring organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in DPM for a broad range of OC/EC ratios. The method has been successfully applied to laboratory-generated and mine samples.

The design methodology of the planned Second Avenue Subway Project (SAS) led to development of the initial support design to estimate cost and quantities in the Preliminary Engineering (PE) stage. Careful selection of the cavern design rules that recognized the impact of rock quality, rock cover, excavation geometry, and excavation sequence helped to overcome the design challenges of large, shallow caverns for the initial ground support. In the course of the design verification process prescribed by the design methodology, the design team was continuously reviewing and updating the support quantities. The design procedure includes methods using different approaches of empirical, continuum, and discontinuum analyses, which are currently advanced in the Final Engineering (FE) stage. The paper is a continuation of the RETC 2005 “Trials and Tribulations” and focuses on the procedures that led to the changes in the initial support as a result of the ongoing design development.

Roof falls in coal mines typically occur in or around intersections and this has not changed in the last two decades. This research develops an improved scientific understanding of stress distribution and associated failure behavior around 4-way and 3-way coal mine intersections. Three-dimensional numerical analyses were performed to determine factors that influence intersection stability. The analyses used Hoek-Brown failure criterion. Failure zones around 3-way and 4-way intersections were developed. Intersection span and horizontal stress have a major influence on intersection stability. For the 4-way intersection, pillar corners across the intersection fail first and lead to progressive failure of immediate roof and floor layers. The mechanism of failure is similar for the 3-way entry but the shape and extension of failed zones differ. Coal ribs mostly fail due to tensile stress, while roof and floor strata fail due to shear stresses. Rib corners fail due to a combination of shear and tensile stresses. In addition to stress distribution; safety factor contours analysis was performed to assess stability of intersections.

The investigation of mine shafts and underground workings at Leadville, Colo., was started in May 1946 and recessed in November 3, 1946. Thirty-eight shafts and connecting accessible underground workings, comprising about a third of the accessible shafts in the district, were investigated. The Leadville district, a former important producer of lead and zinc, was considered by the Bureau of Mines to be capable of bolstering 'the waning domestic output of .these important metal. Accordingly, the investigation was initiated for the purpose of. .obtaining more definite data on sulfide and oxide reserves, evidence to justify completion of the Leadville drainage tunnel, representative large samples of the complex oxidized and mixed ores for testing to determine methods, beneficiation factual data to be supplied to property owners in order to stimulate production, and to determine the more favorable areas for development by the Bureau.

To provide technology that can help decrease the dependence of the U.S. aluminum industry on imported bauxite, the main ore of aluminum, the Bureau of Mines is investigating the extraction of aluminum from abundant domestic reserves of kaolinitic clay. Miniplant studies of the continuous leaching of calcined kaolin with boiling 25-pct HC1 acid resulted in a 93- to 99-pct extraction of the acid-soluble alumina in the calcined kaolin feed. Data are presented for an acid leaching study carried out in three or four continuously stirred tank reactors (CSTR) in series, feed rates of 100 to 250 lb/hr of calcined kaolin, and total nominal residence times of 0.7 to 2.3 hr. A material balance for a 176-lb/hr calcined kaolin feed rate in a circuit consisting of three reactors, four classifiers, and five thickeners is given. Data provide detailed compositional and physical information for calcined kaolin, process liquors, and acid-leached residue solids.

The U.S. mining industry has made progress in reducing accidents and injuries, but interpreting safety data remains difficult due to changes in workforce size and productivity. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) uses tools like the pattern of violation (POV) and significant & substantial (S&S) calculator to monitor safety, though these have limitations. To address this, we developed an information entropybased risk (IER) index that combines various safety metrics, including citations, penalties and injuries. Using data from 2011 to 2020, the IER index was validated with statistical methods and clustering algorithms to ensure it accurately reflects risk levels. The analysis showed clear differences in risk across mining sites, proving the index’s usefulness. The IER index was then applied to a coal mine to demonstrate its effectiveness. This new tool can help mining companies better assess their safety risks and take action to improve workplace safety.
