The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the effect of ground water control on the dewatering of phosphatic clay wastes. Two storage impoundments were constructed. One impoundment was surrounded on three sides with a series of well points (shallow vertical wells) to lower the ambient water table and the second impoundment served as a control. Ground water was pumped from the area surrounding the test impoundment for a period of 490 days. A constant pumping rate of 60 gal/min resulted in a water table drawdown of 13 ft, approximating the bottom of the impoundment. At the end of the test period percent solids in the test impoundment was 35 pct, while in the control impoundment percent solids was only 26.8 pct. Percent solids of greater than 30 pct is required for capping and final reclamation using fertile overburden.

Epithermal gold is hosted by late Middle Miocene Okiduse Volcanics on Woodlark Island. Dating of associated alteration minerals indicate mineralisation to be broadly contemporaneous with volcanism (12.2 - 12.5 m.y.) and is probably related to subduction of the Solomon Sea plate along the Trobriand Trench. Mineralisation is polymetallic and structurally controlled. Pyrite, sphalerite, galena and minor chalcopyrite occur in steeply dipping fracture zones and/or hydrothermal breccia bodies associated with mixed clay-pyrite alteration envelopes. These envelopes occur within a terrane of regionally propylitised high-K, calc-alkaline andesites and related epizonal subvolcanics. Gangue minerals include quartz, calcite, dolomite and minor anhydrite. High level advanced argillic alteration and siliceous cap rocks are not present but may have been eroded off the top of the system. Fluid inclusion and stable isotope data suggest that the carbonates and paragenetically associated auriferous base metal sulphides probably deposited from an isotopically evolved (+8%. 180) reduced hydrothermal fluid sourced from underlying sedimentary rocks. The fluid was predominantly of low salinity (0-4 wt % NaCl equivalent) and had a temperature of about 270¦C at the time of boiling and mineral deposition.

Although auriferous beach and fore-dune sands at Five Mile Beach south of Okarito township had been intensively mined by hand and primative mechanical methods drilling of the sandspit by the Gold Development Corporation in 1929 indicated that the grade and quantity of undisturbed black and grey sand below the water table was sufficient to support a mining operation. Worked sand above the water table also contained fair prospects. The Okarito Five Mile Beach Gold Dredging Co Ltd, was formed and an hydraulically powered, bucket ladder, sluice box dredge built. In 13 years of operation (1931 - 1943) the dredge returned 556.39 kg (17 890 oz) of gold at a recovered grade of 225.4 mg/m3. A total of ú42 000 was distributed as dividends on the ú30 000 capital investment. Recent drill and bulk sampling at the northern end of the beach has confirmed that reworking of the historic tailings by a modern gravity recovery plant would not be economic.

A novel triple action load cell assembly (LCA) was developed to determine three index parameters reflecting compressive, tensile and shear characteristics of mudcakes. The results indicate that the tensile, compressive and torsional behaviour of mudcakes are strongly influenced by the physics and chemistry of the mud additives. The Mount Angelo prospect outcrops as two copper rich gossans, the larger of which is 250 ft long and 70 ftwide. The mineralization is epigenetic and replaces part of a brecciated and disturbed lime tone and calcareou sediment sequence.Magnetic and self potential survey indicated a substantial body of sulphide mineralization, the top of which was approximately 100 ft below the surface.Diamond drilling confirmed this and established the presence of a mineral body of at least 500,000 tons, extending to a depth of 300 ft. Of the 500,000 tons, 200,000 ton are primary copper ore which a ays 2 per cent copper.This mineral body is not economic at present, but could become economic if copper mining is established elsewhere in the district...

When Enron rocked the United States with its Titanic-sized financial accounting scandal, miners and metallurgists were probably too busy on the mine sites in remote locations to wonder about its ripple effect. But then Enron sank, Arthur Andersen tanked and the list of scandals, costing billions of dollars, continued to ripple. Followed by the Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act of 2002 (Sarbanes-Oxley), the recent credit crunch and weak economy, the currents from Enron?s collapse eventually washed right into the mine and the mill. These events placed intense scrutiny on metals production accounting processes as traditional semi-qualitative metal accounting practices provided insufficient credibility and transparency. ?There is growing intolerance of organizations that are unsure about the location of thousands of tonnes of ore, which will typically lose 10 to 15% of their notional value on the way to the concentrator,? Rob Morrison wrote in the opening chapter to An Introduction to Metal Accounting and Balancing. ?If the measurement and forecasts also contain qualitative (fudge) factors, a very real suspicion might emerge about just how much metal might disappear (by theft or misplacement) before detection becomes likely.? Metallurgical accounting, put simply, is the tracking and reporting of the quantity and quality (tonnage and grade, usually) of materials entering or leaving each stage from source to product for a specified accounting period. Lacking an accounting standard, metals accounting in precious metal operations has been performed in an ad-hoc, informal manner, leading to numerous errors and unidentified potentially significant inefficiencies and financial losses. As a result, mining companies are beginning to examine the quality of their metals accounting systems since they form the basis of mining company?s financial accounts and reports. As part of an effort to create that accounting standard in the mineral industry, University of Queensland?s Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre published the textbook An Introduction to Metal Accounting and Balancing in 2009. While development of a textbook and standard are significant steps forward, the challenge in the precious metals industry is in the application of some of these suggested practices. Though improving process transparency and precious metals accounting reporting accuracy is a key driver for change from the financial side, perhaps even more important is the potential benefit to operational performance that comes with better measurement, accounting and reconciliation systems. Loss of precious metals, processing of waste and inefficient mining and processing systems are all problems that are faced in an operation on a daily basis that can help be resolved through improvements in metal accounting and reconciliation. The financial consequences of such operational inefficiencies and bad decisions based on poor information are arguably greater than consequences of fraudulent accounting. Large discrepancies between mine and mill measurement systems that measure the quantity and quality of valuable material currently exist. Some of these are expected because of statistical variation, but inherent random measurement variation is sometimes an insufficient explanation. Though the mill can usually make much better production estimates through their measurement systems (that is, less variation), this knowledge rarely benefits the mine. 3 Moreover, even if the mine does a reasonably good job of estimating expected production at the grade control level (in situ), issues such as blast movement, poor mining practice and inefficient ore/waste classification make for a disconnect between the in situ estimates of the mine and the estimates from the concentrator. This inhibits effective evaluation of the reserve and grade control models using concentrator estimates. Linking the two ends, mining and concentration, is a neglected area sorely in need of an overhaul. Hence the need for improved mine to mill reconciliation ? the area of comparing, balancing and adjusting production estimates between mine and mill for consistency in reporting.

I. INTRODUCTION. SINCE the discovery of silver at Cobalt, Ontario, in 1903 more than 100,000,000 oz. of silver have been produced b: the mines in the Nipissing district, and there is reason to believe that at least as much more will be produced in the next five years. The estimated value of the aggregate output o ore to the end of 1910 is $48,327,280. The ore yielded 93,977,833, oz. of silver and was mined at a net profit of about $26,000,000. For 1910 the production was 30,558,825 oz. valued at $15,436,894, and yielding a profit of about $9,000',000 The details of the production of the Cobalt district for the years 1904 to 1909, inclusive, are given in Table I. APPROXIMATELY 26 percent of the total ore production to date from the largest single deposit of copper-bearing material in the world was mined during the war years, 1942 to 1945, at Chile Exporation Company's great open-pit mine at Chuquicamata, Chile. About 18 percent of the total waste removed during the life of the mine was handled in the same period. The total of ore and waste represents approximately 24 percent of the total material that has been excavated from the pit. This is more than was removed in the first fourteen years of operation from 1914 through 1927. At Creighton Mine, magnitude events are a regular occurrence due to depth and major seismically-active structures. Over the last ten years, major advances have been made in research and development to develop strategies for the management of these major events. Today, the number of rockbursts has been drastically reduced at the mine and damage due to seismic events, when they occur, is often minimal. This paper describes the evolution and implementation of appropriate geomechanics strategies, designs, and practical ground control measures undertaken for the management of seismicity at Vale Inco?s Creighton Mine. A description of the research and development approach, implementation, and ground control strategy is provided for placement of enhanced support systems to manage the consequences of magnitude events at Creighton

In 1943, the Federal Bureau of Mines began a program of thermodynamic investigations of petroleum constituents and related compounds. These systematic, long-range studies, which were conducted in the thermodynamics laboratory of the Bartlesville Petroleum Research Center and are still continuing, have resulted in a substantial quantity of data valuable to the petroleum industry and science in general. As separate phases of these studies were completed, the findings were promptly reported in the scientific press. During the past 16 years, 89 journal articles, giving the results obtained for individual compounds and small groups of related compounds, were published, mainly in the Journal of the American Chemical Society and the Journal of Physical Chemistry. In addition, members of the Bureau staff have contributed six chapters to specialized reference books. This circular, prepared in response to many requests, lists these 95 published papers, giving an abstract of the contents of each, as well as titles, authors, and literature citations. The journal articles are listed in the order of their preparation, which closely approximates the chronological order of their publication; hence, the item number to the left of each citation corresponds to the assigned contribution number. For the convenience of the reader, the abstract section is followed by a condensed bibliography, arranged alphabetically by senior author and keyed to the abstracts by appropriate contribution numbers in parentheses after the entry.

As part of the Demand Evaluation Program of the Bureau of Mines to determine future needs for minerals, a study was instituted to develop and describe a methodology for approaching the problem of substitution between mineral commodities and between mineral commodities and other materials. The report comprises three sections: A review of general factors relative to substitution, a case study of the effect of substitution on zinc die-casting markets in recent years, and a general methodology for reviewing materials substitution with specific emphasis derived from reviewing substitution in the domestic zinc die-casting markets.

Measurements from an old survey are being machine processed as a pilot project in the development of a computer-assisted method of structural mapping in shield areas. The key element in the system is a field data sheet which requires the geologist to determine a textural hierarchy in each exposure. The pilot system is limited to orientation analysis and utilizes a prior textural analysis, but this would not usually be a problem in utilizing the system ab initio for exploration. A data processing system of this general type offers promise of considerably increased productivity of field geologists by reducing compilation time and improved technical supervision through centralization of processing, and would make structural analysis an economically viable tool in mining exploration and development.

One of the most energy-intensive processes for producing submicron range calcite is stirred media mill. In the present work, numerous operating parameters such as solid mass fraction, grinding media size, media filling ratio, and grinding time have been investigated using a vertical type stirred media mill. The results are evaluated on the basis of mean particle size, specific surface area, and specific energy consumption. After conducting this study, optimum experimental conditions found to be as 70% media filling ratio, 25% solid mass fraction, 1 mm grinding media size, and 120 min grinding time. Besides, energy savings up to 22% were achieved with the choice of proper media size.

The method of Substance Flow Analysis (SFA) provides a helpful tool for the study of the industrial metabolism of a certain metal within a regional level, such as copper, lead etc. In this paper the flows and inventory of cobalt in China, 2008, were traced with the STAF model, and the situations of production, fabrication and manufacturing, use and waste management in China were introduced. The result revealed that the resource of cobalt in China was so poor that a large amount of cobalt material or cobalt products needed to be imported, and there was lack of recycling of cobalt resources.0

During recent years there has been a marked increase in the use of explosives in Queensland coal mines. Delay detonators have been introduced and their use has extended with the wider application of mechanised methods of mining.The need for careful study of the characteristics of delay detonators is stressed so that the advantages of simultaneous firing, from the points of view of safety and efficiency, may be obtained. With their use new potential hazards are introduced. These hazardsare considered and means whereby the overall safety may be improved are discussed.The increase in the number of misfires since the introduction of delay detonators is shown and the examination of misfired detonators is described. Lessons to be learned! from these misfires are noted and details are given of the essential requirements for safe and efficient blasting using delay detonators.INTRonUCTIONOne of the aims of mechanization in coal mines is to reduce the physical effort applied to the winning of coal. Explosives play an important part in achieving this and, following the introduction of power borers for the drilling of shot-holes in Queensland coal mines, much of the arduous work associated with coal getting has been eased. Underground stone mines are vulnerable to karst void formations due to the erosion of carbonate rocks by groundwater flow. The voids or cavities may lead to hazards including ground collapse and sudden outflow of clay-rock sediments during the development of the mine. This study evaluates the effect of karst voids on the strength of pillars in an underground room-and-pillar limestone mine. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys were interpreted to map the void boundaries inside a karst-affected pillar. A combination of LiDAR scanning and virtual discontinuity mapping is used to formulate the discrete fracture network (DFN). Discrete element modeling (DEM) helps simulate the effect of karsts and discontinuities in the pillar models with varying stress. It is observed that the cavities may lead to a significant reduction in pillar strength. Apart from posing a hazard to miners and machinery, any advance into these cavities may disrupt mine operations. This research serves as an initial step toward understanding the importance of pillar design in underground stone mines affected by karst voids to prevent local instability or pillar failures.

The viscosity of TiO2-containing blast furnace slags may increase rapidly (commonly referred to as thickening) under strong reducing conditions in the blast furnace. To elucidate the mechanisms for slag thickening, measurements have been made of changes in the composition and rheological properties of TiO2-CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO slags during the reduction process. The slag composition covered the range of 17–33 wt% TiO2, 9–19% Al2O3, 8–16% MgO and theCaO/SiO2from 0.8 to 1.4. The viscosities were measured using the rotating cylinder method at temperatures up to 1550ºC and the fusibility temperatures were determined from ‘breaks’ in the viscosity-temperature curves. The reduction of the slag was carried out in graphite crucibles at1500ºC for 2–6 hours The rheological properties of the slags during reduction were predominantly influenced by the slag basicity (CaO/SiO2), and the effect of other components depended largely on basic or acidic behaviour of the oxide. The reduction of TiO2in the slag by carbon was initially fast to formTi2O3, followed by further reduction to TiO and TiC. Correspondingly, the viscosity showed initially a slight decrease, followed by a gradual and then rapid increase. The thickening was found to be accelerated by an increase in TiO2content and a decrease in the CaO/SiO2in the slag. In addition to the existence of 1~3 wt% TiC, the thickened slags also had a significant amount of TiO (3~7 wt%), suggesting that TiO may play an important role in the ‘thickening phenomena’ ,possibly by forming solid solutions with TiC to significantly increase the number of solid particles in the heterogeneous slag. Thorium and cerium are two of the group of elements known as "rare earth metals," and are obtained from the mineral monazite. Previous to the employment of thorium and cerium in incandescent gas mantles these elements were nothing more than laboratory curiosities, as the rest of the rare-earth metals are to-day. The most important salts of these rare earths are the nitrates. In the manufacture of gas mantles, thorium nitrate is the principal ingredient and forms prom 92 to 99 per cent of the impregnating material; the other 1 or 2 per cent is largely cerium nitrate and is quite as necessary, for without it there would be little luminosity to the mantle when in use. When the mantle is "burned off," the nitrates are changed to oxides. The monazite used as a source of thoria contains from 6 to 9 per cent of thorium oxide (Th02) and 24 to 32 per cent of cerium oxide (Ce203). As only the thoria and a very small hart of the ceria from the monazite could be used in gas-mantle manufacture, for a time the residues consisting mostly of ceria with somewhat smaller quantities of other rare earths found no commercial application. Later, however, they came to be utilized in several ways, the most important being: (1) the manufacture of cored flaming arc carbons, a great, irmprovement over the plain arc carbons used in electric lighting; (2) cerium metal used in the manufacture of pyrophoric or sparking alloys or "flints" for automatic pocket lighters and miners' lamps; and (3) the production of special kinds of optical and art glass.
